Community Pride & Give Back
It’s
Derrick Breaux Publisher
hard to flip through the pages of your 92081 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).
Order your local Zip Code shirt today at www.WearYourZip.com
All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher
P.S. Don’t forget to check out our 2016 Real Estate Issue featuring our local REALTORS® and Lenders starting on page 22. There are many elements that go into building a solid community, and our local celebrity real estate professionals and lenders certainly play a huge part. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses.

MISS VISTA 2016 PAGEANT CROWNS NEW ROYALTY
T
he Miss Vista 2016 pageant was held at the beginning of April at the Vista Innovation and Design Academy in a Mardi Gras theme, with 20-year-old Olivia Young and 16-year-old Fabiana Bommino crowned as Miss Vista and Miss Teen Vista 2016. Together Olivia, Fabiana, and their runner-up princesses will be called on to represent Vista with poise and personality in everything from community cleanups to black tie galas, with duties ranging from helping to raise funds and awareness for numerous causes to doing arts and crafts with kids, selling raffle tickets, cheering on marathon runners before sunrise, and much more. Olivia Young is the daughter of a past Miss Poway. Growing up around pageants, she admitted that she has imagined herself as Miss Vista since she was a little girl. “I watched girls transform into something I’ve always wanted to be, a role model to look up to,” she said. “I feel
honored to be the new Miss Vista.” While the steps into the pageant world felt less natural to Fabiana at first, she credits Laura Bednar, the Miss Vista Pageant Director, for encouraging her to get involved. “I admit, I was a little scared, but as I got older, I’ve learned to love myself and my body,” she shared. “During my reign as Miss Teen Vista I want to inspire little girls who want to be princesses one day. Even if only one little girl’s life is touched by me, I will know that I have truly accomplished a great task.” Princess crowns went to Bibiana Hernandez, Kelly Barnes, Cynthia Delgado, and Karla Escobedo in the Miss division and Rocio Quesada, Leslie Martinez, Mikaela Alvarado, and Keren Tobar in the Teen division. The pageant is open to young women ages 13 to 26 who live, work, or go to school in the Vista area. oe and Debby McCloskey have a combined 11 sisters. That’s plenty of female influence, according to Joe, and part of the inspiration behind their nonprofit organization, Helping Women Help Themselves. “We believe that if you help women, it makes for a stronger family, which leads to a better community and a better world,” he reflected. He and Debby met in high school in the Detroit, MI area and have been married for 38 years. Their family includes their daughter, Kate, two cocker spaniels, and five thoroughbred racehorses. Helping Women Help Themselves opened in Vista three years ago. The McCloskeys were supporting a nonprofit that managed micro-loans for lowincome women. But additional business debts caused client anxiety in some entrepreneurs. Joe and Debby realized these women needed more education about running a small

business. “So we decided to take matters into our own hands and create a nonprofit that focused entirely upon education and ongoing business support,” mentioned Joe. They first focused on women who couldn’t afford credible business advice. Men are included. “We tell everyone, it’s not for us to say if a business idea is good or bad,” shared Joe. “The marketplace will tell you.” They help make certain that their business leaders have the best possible chances for success by knowing basic business principles and understanding their personal definition of success. For some, Joe mentioned, it’s making a few extra thousand dollars annually to start a college fund, for example. For others, it might mean making six figures. “Either way, the same basic business principles apply,” he added. The organization provides one-on-one business consultation services free of charge in their Vista office. Joe McCloskey brings more than 35 years of business experience in running both Fortune 500 and private companies. Debby McCloskey is an artist and decorator, and manages the creative and administrative aspects. The organization collaborates with San Diego County Libraries as host sites for free, two-hour small business seminars. Those interested may follow up for consultations. They also present sessions at Board of Equalization conferences. All types of individuals have been guided in their successful businesses, from doctors and attorneys to inventors, manufacturers, and people who begin with little. It’s all in a day’s work for Joe and Debby to help others help themselves.

THE SHERWOOD FAMILY CREATED FIGHT ALD TO FIGHT ILLNESS THROUGH EDUCATION by LYDIA COBB | photo by Alicia Jeanne Photography

he Sherwoods moved here from Boulder, CO in 2000, where Bill began working in the brewing industry 26 years ago. Janis and Bill met working in Boulder’s first microbrewery, Walnut Brewery. Bill is a specialist in brewery engineering and expansion, and is now at Ballast Point Brewing Co. Janis was in restaurant management before their children, Amanda and Sawyer, were born. Their daughter/stepdaughter, Jennifer, lives in Erie, CO. Janis later worked for a travel agency, and obtained her real estate license here. “I believe all of these experiences contributed to my ability to start and manage my nonprofit foundation, Fight ALD,” revealed Janis Sherwood. The family has known both triumph and tragedy. When Amanda was 10 weeks old, she underwent skull surgery for craniosynostosis. At 23, she’s now working for Stone Brewing

Fight ALD Fighting illness through education by providing information about ALD’s symptoms, treatments, and diagnostic test to medical professionals and our community. www.FightALD.org Bill and Janis Sherwood Amanda Sherwood (23); Jennifer Sherwood (35) Vista Vista Village Pub, Uncle Tony’s Italian Cuisine, Moonlight Amphitheatre, Brengle Terrace Park, the former El Callejon, and heading west to the beach
Co. Sawyer was born a year later. Janis shared, “He was a lover of anything with a ball or water, or both. He had wanted to be a professional baseball player when he grew up. He played in Vista Little League for three years while his dad and sister helped coach.” Memorable family trips included snorkeling in Mexico, Maui, and camping in the west. Eight-year old Sawyer passed away from ALD in 2003. This medical acronym, ALD, was unfamiliar to the Sherwoods before their son experienced complete adrenal failure. They pursued bone marrow transplant, but he lived only six months after diagnosis. ALD is adrenoleukodystrophy, an X-chromosome disease in boys that affects adrenal glands and the myelin sheath in the brain and/ or spinal column. “Newborn screening is the best weapon we have to save boys from this deadly disease,” stated Janis. It’s often misdiagnosed as other treatable conditions. There’s an adult onset, called AMN, which affects both genders. Janice hit the road for Fight ALD's Awareness Across America campaign. In five years, she has visited more than 3,200 hospitals and clinics to distribute information about newborn screening for ALD. “Now I can say I have been to all but one of the 50 states,” added Janis – Alaska remains. Back at home, the Sherwoods cook and entertain. Janis was recently elected to the Myelin Project’s board. Her speaking engagements included a conference in London this spring. Upcoming fundraisers, Taste of Vista (June 15) and Stone Brewing’s Anniversary Beer Festival (August 19-20), will help raise funds for Fight ALD. In the Sherwood family, Sawyer’s legacy lives on. He will always be in their hearts, and is the inspiration of Fight ALD.

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Get Ready for Red Shoe Day
San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. For more information about Red Shoe Day or to find out how you can help visit www.rmhcsd.org.

The Vista Fire Department (VFD) recently achieved reaccreditation by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), demonstrating its commitment to providing Vista residents with the highest quality of service. The step-by-step process has helped the fire department apply new technologies to reduce response times and implement long-term strategic planning for the future of the organization. The department was first accredited in 2010 and must undergo the re-accreditation process every five years. VFD Fire Chief Hahn said, “Since our initial accreditation five years ago, we have made significant improvements as a direct result of the accreditation process. The department, as a whole, has built a strong foundation for the future over the past five years and I expect that trend to continue.” The City of Vista is the only accredited city fire department in San Diego County and is one of 17 in California. Only 196 agencies out of approximately 30,000 fire agencies nationally have been accredited. Chief Hahn added, “To know that we have been evaluated against the national standards and internationally recognized best management practices, demonstrates that our fire department is among the most professional of agencies.”

Passion 4 Kids Gives Back to Local Mom
Local children’s charity, Passion 4 K.I.D.S recently surprised a Vista single mom and her teenage daughter with a car. Terri Lynn Torres, mother of 14-year-old Micah, has spent the last 18 years fighting a brain tumor that, in the last few months, has dramatically increased in size, causing debilitating headaches. When their car was stolen, Terri and Micah were left without transportation or a way to get to school and the many doctors’ appointments Terri has each week. Passion 4 K.I.D.S founders Charles and Linda Van Kessler heard of their need and stepped in to help. They shared, “We were honored to play a small part in restoring some joy to this struggling teen and her mom by providing them with a car.” Passion 4 K.I.D.S. is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit dealing with handicapped, neglected, abandoned, abused, and underprivileged children of any race, color, and creed as well as children in acute, life-threatening, emergency situations in the United States. Veterans Memorial Park
For the past five years, Mary Ann and Rico Pinamonti have been working closely with the City of Vista in an effort to create a park which honors the heroism and sacrifice of those who fought and died in the Vietnam War, including their brother Ernie Pinamonti. A bronze statue of Ernie reading a letter from home honors his memory as the centerpiece of the park. Created by Oregon sculptor Rip Caswell, the statue is surrounded by large tiles engraved with letters by Ernie and other soldiers to provide a glimpse into young soldiers’ experiences during war. Located at S. Santa Fe Ave. near E. Broadway, the one-acre site was dedicated in late April with a free community event that was open to the public. For more information visit www.cityofvista.com.
Call for Artists
The City of Vista’s Public Arts Commission recently announced a call for artists for three art walls in the Paseo Santa Fe downtown district at the Veterans Memorial Park. The commission is seeking up to three artists or artist teams to complete three installations or murals, one on each wall. Each wall should communicate a theme designated by the artist(s) and all media and materials will be considered. Each selected artist will receive a commission of $4,000 per wall for their time, materials, and installation costs. A one to two-page letter of interest describing the artist’s approach to the project along with no more than a two page relevant resume and rendering of their proposed design is also required. The deadline for proposals is May 25. The City of Vista’s Public Arts Commission will serve as the selection panel with the Vista City Council making the final decision. For more information, including more specific details on submission requirements, visit www.vistapublicart.com.

On July 16, the Summer Fun Fest kicks off at Brengle Terrace Park from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with kids’ crafts and activities, and bounce houses. Stick around after the Fest to enjoy a showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Finally, the series comes to a close on Aug. 13 with Inside Out at Brengle Terrace Park. Today, Dave is a volunteer at the gardens and the event organizer behind the Meading at the Garden event. The annual event, held every April, is a social affair of beer, wine, mead, and music that benefits the Alta Vista Botanical Garden (AVBG). “This year brought both exposure and awareness to AVBG – a hidden gem in Vista,” Dave shared. “It also raised some much-needed funds for maintenance and expansion.” Organizing the event was an opportunity for Dave to combine his interests, allowing him to

honor his mother’s love for the gardens and share his love for meading and home brewing. The annual Novemberfest at AVBG, sponsored by the Amigos de Vista Lions Club, is another opportunity for Dave to support the gardens. He also volunteers for the AVBG's Earth Day festivities, and seeks to help by spreading awareness about the gardens wherever he can. Dave began making mead, a honey-based fermented drink, about 12 years ago on a friend’s recommendation. Also known as honey wine, a variety of fruits, spices, and vegetables can be added to flavor the drink. “I have a small orchard on my property and experimented with citrus and tropicals to produce my first few creations,” he said. “I enjoy the creative part of meadmaking the most. It is expressionistic, and therefore artistic, but also requires solid principles rooted in science to achieve consistent quality and results.” His use of honey for meadmaking has

The use of pesticides has been a contributing factor to the Colony Collapse Disorder, impacting the bee population. “I believe that organic and sustainable living is the best way we can help our bees, and ourselves,” Dave shared. His lifelong appreciation of the outdoors began as a boy during hiking and fishing trips with the Boy Scouts. A 92081 resident since 1970, Dave appreciates the great variety of activities of the Southern California lifestyle, including surfing, snowboarding, and gardening. “I enjoy the mix between suburban and rural settings that Vista offers,” he acknowledged. “The peaceful surroundings at the garden provide a quiet place I can escape to relax and think about whatever’s on my mind.”

Included in the four-day event was Digital Promise’s first ever TEDx conference which explored themes of innovation and connectedness in education, followed by the gathering of League members and a community of handselected educators at the 2016 ASU GSV Summit, and finally school site visits to Vista and Cajon Valley schools, where attendees were able to experience first-hand how local students are excelling in technology-support environments. “Co-hosting the League of Innovative Schools is an incredible opportunity for us to showcase our region as a leader in digital learning,” said VUSD Superintendent Devin Vodicka. “This is made possible by the strength of numerous industry partnerships, alliances with higher education, and networks with fellow educators. I am proud of our students, staff, and community for embracing possibilities and for working together to build a bright future together.” According to VUSD, their mission is to inspire students to think critically and collaboratively to solve real-world problems. Maksim, owner and lead dentist of Advanced Dentistry of San Diego has been practicing dentistry in Vista for over 20 years. “I like the small town feel and personal relationships I have formed within the community,” said Dr. Maksim, who is a Southern California native and a graduate from the University of Southern California. His career as a general dentist dates back to 1988, and today Dr. Maksim especially takes pride in providing highly aesthetic veneers and adult orthodontics. One of the tremendous benefits his office provides is the availability of inoffice treatment by board certified dental specialists. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
What’s Influencing Renters to Become Homebuyers? O
ne major factor that is influencing people who are currently renting now to become buyers is the amount renters are paying monthly. The rental market has been saturated with renters for the last couple of years. This increase in demand has driven the rental rates significantly higher than what landlords have previously asked several years ago. But this is also causing the rental supply to dwindle, which is creating a bit of a rental bidding war in some areas. What is the reason for the increase in rental demand? Many economists feel it’s the low inventory levels for purchasing a home. According to Realtor.com Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke, “This January reading is the lowest January measure of supply since January 2005. We’ve now seen 41 straight months of tight supply.” Homebuyers don’t want to over pay for their homes. The majority of buyers are staying within their parameters and would rather wait for the right home to come on the market than to compromise and purchase a home that doesn’t quite meet their needs. With the low inventory levels this may take several months. This is why you are seeing renters staying in their rental homes longer than usual, and rental rates increasing due to the demand for a rental home. Homebuyers are staying positive about
buying. “Homebuyer sentiment remains positive, with 33 percent of those surveyed indicating that they are more inclined to buy compared to last year,” according to DSNews. The patience seems to be paying off. We have had several clients find their dream homes. THE PERFECT
PICNIC
Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL
W
hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.
LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org
MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us
OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the Mission church which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org
