Fall is in the Air
I
’m typically a summer guy. I like the warm weather. I like spending time out in the boat. There are the beaches, the parks, hiking, kids are out of school – it’s all good. Summer is usually my favorite time of the year. So why have I spent the last several weeks daydreaming about the arrival of fall? Quite frankly, because it’s been HOT! I guess I’m getting old. Or perhaps I’ve simply turned into a Southern California fair-weather person. Anyone that is close to me knows that I love to wear my shorts and T-shirts. In fact, that is my work attire more days than not. But let’s face it – the August heat has been ridiculous to say the least. The idea of getting back to our 72 degree average daily forecast – along with chilly nights – is quite appealing to me. I can barely wait. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that our kids are now back in school, and our home is getting back into a more realistic schedule with predictable routines. There is a simple feeling of relief that I get knowing that our kids are hard at work in the classroom and not constantly being shuttled around between play dates, camps, and sleepovers. Oh, and the retirement (for the most part) of the repetitive “I’m bored” phrase – gone! Strange how that happens. And did I mention football? Isn’t fall synonymous with football? The temperature cools down for the players on the gridiron – having Derrick Breaux played many years of football growing up, this must be by design. Publisher Whether you are a local high school football fan, a college fan, or a professional football fan, you can’t deny the excitement of the season. Fall is almost here, I’m ready for it. We have some great things planned for the magazine over the next few issues. Be on the lookout for some additional departments and special sections within the pages of 92127 – all designed with you in mind. Thanks for your continued support. Don’t be a stranger. We always welcome feedback, photo submissions, article recommendations, and new ideas. It’s a community thing! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

rmaun Rouhi, a Del Norte High School junior, is celebrating the success of Del Norte’s Future Doctors of America club and their recent publication of The Future Doctor Medical Journal. He founded the club when he was a freshman and is pleased with its growth since that time. “We have grown into a club with outreach/mentorship programs at Oak Valley Middle School and the community at large. The Future Doctor Medical Journal is the first high school medical publication in Southern California. Our inaugural 36-page issue was released in June 2015 to acclaim from both students and teachers alike,” revealed Armaun. The inspiration behind the publication was to rouse interest in medicine and create a new generation of future doctors in 92127 and beyond.

An avid science enthusiast, Armaun’s favorite class at Del Norte so far is AP Biology, a class he calls truly interdisciplinary. He feels fortunate to attend Del Norte and be exposed to so many different subjects with a hands-on education. “I love what I like to call the ‘trial and error’ culture at Del Norte. Here, learning is synonymous with trying things out for yourself to see what works and what doesn’t work. With this approach you can step back, draw a conclusion, and leave the classroom with not only a more involved perspective on a subject matter but also a more complete understanding of the subject,” explained Armaun. “My parents came to In his free time Armaun enjoys swimming, playing soccer with friends, and America in their teens with listening to jazz. Increasing the Odds FIRST RESPONSE AGENCIES LEAD LOCAL CPR CAMPAIGN TO RAISE SURVIVAL RATE photo by SOUL OF PHOTOGRAPHY
S
udden cardiac arrest (SCA) can occur at any time without warning. Nationwide statistics indicate that an individual only has a six percent survival rate from a SCA occurrence; when first responders are involved, that percentage increases to 11 percent. The percentage could increase substantially if more bystanders were equipped with the knowledge to perform CPR right when the victim experiences SCA. Knowing this, County Service Area 17 (CSA 17) first response agencies – namely the Del Mar Fire Department, Encinitas Fire Department, Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, and Solana Beach Fire Department – have engaged in a hands-only CPR campaign that follows the American Heart Association’s campaign. “The goal is to empower the public, as immediate CPR can increase the survival chances by 25 percent,” said CSA 17 Emergency Services Coordinator Mary Murphy. “Way too often bystanders do not offer aid to a patient because they can’t remember all the steps to
traditional CPR, are afraid of doing it incorrectly, or are wary of giving mouth-to-mouth breaths to a stranger. The goal of hands-only CPR is to simplify the process and encourage more people to attempt life-saving measures in emergency situations.” CSA 17 agencies have been providing free CPR education to schools, churches, boys and girl scouts, and any group that has made a request to the departments. They also have a strong presence at local events and at the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District’s open houses. The agencies were proud to announce that in 2014 they had a survival rate of 16 percent as verified by the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES), a nationally recognized database dedicated to tracking SCA outcomes. So far this year the agencies have seen 36 percent of their CPR patients survive to be discharged home. To schedule a hands-only CPR class contact Mary Murphy at 760-685-6402.

Soothe Your Lower Back EIGHT TIPS TO AVOID BACK PAIN If you’ve been laid low by a sore back, you have plenty of company. About 80 percent of adults experience back pain at some point in their lives, making it the second most common pain condition in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health. While back pain has many causes and manifests in different ways, from a dull ache to a sharp pain, the good news is that most lower back pain gets better within a few days or weeks. Try these eight tips to strengthen your back and prevent pain. Get moving. You may think staying still and resting is the best remedy for a sore back, but regular physical activity eases inflammation and muscle tension. Low-impact exercise such as walking or swimming increases strength so
by ISABEL CHEON, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo
your back muscles function more efficiently. Include core-strengthening exercises to develop stronger abdominal muscles, which also protect your back by providing greater support. Yoga can be especially helpful because it promotes deep breathing and relaxation as well as emphasizing stretching and muscle strength. Stay away from sit-ups, leg lifts, and toe touches if you have chronic back pain.
Lift with proper form. You have probably seen pictures or graphic representations of the best way to lift items to prevent straining your back. Always bend at the knees to pick up something, with your feet shoulder-width apart, rather than bending at the waist to reach down to the object with your arms. Holding the object close to your body, slowly straighten your legs, keeping your back straight. Avoid twisting your back in any way while lifting objects.
Watch your weight. Extra pounds can make back pain worse by shifting your center of gravity and putting strain on your back.
Stay away from high heels.
Don’t smoke. Smoking increases the risk of osteoporosis, which can lead to a weaker spine and subsequent back pain. Sleeping position matters. If you can, avoid sleeping on your back or stomach, since these positions add additional strain on your lower back. If you do sleep on your back, try putting a pillow under your knees for more support, and if you have to sleep on your stomach, place a pillow under your hips. Your doctor can help advise you about the best sleeping position if you have questions.
Pay attention to posture. Standing and sitting up straight will help you avoid putting undue strain on your back. If you are sitting, make sure you have a chair with good back support and keep your knees and hips level. Never slouch or lean to the side. At work, make sure your desk and work area is ergonomically sound. Spending hours at work hunched over a desk can put undue stress on the back. Keep your feet flat on the floor and change your position regularly. If you experience back pain for more than two weeks, see your primary care doctor.
Isabel Cheon, M.D., is an internal medicine physician at Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo. Dr. Cheon provides comprehensive primary care and believes in empowering her patients to take an active role in their care. An avid traveler, she has visited six of the seven continents.

Terry Anderson and Marlene Levitt Create Vibrant Abstract Art Together by LINDA FRABL | photos by Spark Photography
I
f you’ve dined at Capri Blu in 4S Ranch recently, you probably noticed the vibrant “Canyon” series of canvases gracing its walls, credited to an artist named Temáre. What you may not have known is that Temáre is actually composed of two local Rancho Bernardo women, Terry Anderson and Marlene Levitt, both of whom are not only grandmothers but successful artistic collaborators. In 2007 the women began their Temáre enterprise, a combination of the first few letters in their first names. Specializing in abstract pieces, Temáre has already provided custom artwork for several businesses. Terry cheerfully commented, “We like to say that Temáre can transform any environment, from the board room to the bedroom.” Marlene added, “Terry and I are always experimenting with new ideas, and we plan to continue showing our abstracts within the wonderful San Diego art community.” Both women grew up about 45 minutes from each other in the Midwest (Marlene is from Detroit, MI and Terry is from Toledo, OH) but didn’t meet each other until 2005 when both were in the Rancho Bernardo Art Association. It was originally Marlene who suggested the two of them
work on canvasses together. Terry recalled, “To paint with another person on the same canvas seemed really out there! However, we managed to put our egos aside and get excited every time we hit the canvas, and the freedom of expression it brings is the biggest reward.” Elaborating on their unique free-form painting method, Marlene explained, “We paint on the same canvas together at the same time, never having anything in mind at first other than color and balance. What develops is magic to us. It allows us to explore a freer and looser type of art, and at the same time, it has enhanced our great friendship!” Marlene, a TV producer, didn’t start painting until she took an art class at the age of 50, and she prefers using acrylics and color. Terry, a former marketing/travel manager, has actually been dabbling in art since high school, and works mainly in oils and acrylics. Marlene exclaimed, “I’ve vowed to devote the rest of my life to the arts and that’s what I’ve been doing!” Terry concurred, saying, “I was always interested in art, but did very little with it for many years. I knew it was time to get serious about it and I haven't stopped since!”

Rancho BEERnardo ENJOY CRAFT TASTINGS AT SAN DIEGO’S ONLY IPA FESTIVAL ON OCT. 10 photos by SPARK PHOTOGRAPHY
T
he highly anticipated Rancho BEERnardo Festival returns to Sikes Adobe Farmstead on Saturday, Oct. 10. The event is San Diego’s only festival dedicated almost exclusively to celebrating the IPA, a favorite offering from local craft breweries. India Pale Ales are a deliciously hoppy style of beer, and West Coast IPAs are known for foregrounding the hops even more than East Coast varieties. Guests will have from 2 to 5 p.m. to enjoy 15 tastings, choosing from around 50 select craft IPAs as well as other beers and wines. Guests will also be able to vote on the People’s Choice Award for the best IPA at the festival and take home a complimentary tasting glass. Live music and food offerings will round out the celebration. Entries are $40 for 15 tastings, with pairs of tickets available for $70.
Last year’s event drew over 450 attendees, and organizers expect an even larger turnout this year. The major event sponsors are the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club and Urge American Gastropub, and proceeds will go towards organizations supported by the Rotary Club. Beneficiaries include local scout troups, Toys for Tots, Rides and Smiles, Oasis Haven, the Ed Brown Center for Active Adults, and Team Red, White, & Blue. Tours of the Sikes Adobe Farmstead will also be available – the farmstead is a State Point of Historic Interest dating back to the 1800s. It was first restored in January 2004, then burned to the ground in October 2007. The farmhouse reopened in June 26. Learn more about the event at www.ranchobeernardofestival.com.

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE
Ingredients
Salad Ingredients 1 large head of red leaf lettuce, stem cut off and washed thoroughly ½ medium red onion, very thinly sliced 2 medium tomatoes, thinly sliced
Makes: 4 se rvings 3 if very hung ; ry Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes
Stir Fry Ingredients 1 pound thinly sliced beef, approximately 1⁄8 inch thick 1 tablespoon of oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon sugar 3 tablespoons oyster sauce 1 teaspoon of fish sauce 4 ounces flour and water mixture (thickening agent) Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
About the Chef
Dressing Ingredients 5 tablespoons lime juice 1 ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon finely ground black pepper
Directions 1. 2. 3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
On a wide serving plate, arrange the salad in layers: lettuce on bottom, tomatoes in the middle, onions on top. Get into the fridge as soon as possible to maintain crispness of veggies. Prep the dressing and place in the fridge to keep cool. Limes can be finicky, and vary in juiciness and tartness. Taste your dressing and balance the salt and pepper accordingly. Prep stir fry ingredients on the counter so they’re ready to use. Remember, this is a quick stir fry on high heat so the meat can't keep cooking while you are looking for your ingredients. Make sure your wok or skillet is large enough so the meat isn’t crowded. If you have to, separate the meat into two batches to prevent the beef from steaming and becoming tough. Heat some oil in a hot wok or skillet. Add garlic and stir until fragrant (30 seconds), then add sugar. Before garlic turns brown, put in the fish sauce. Stir in the beef and toss thoroughly to get the garlic, sugar, and fish sauce in. Put the dash of salt next and finish with the oyster sauce. This all should take no more than maybe 7 to 10 minutes. Constantly stir the meat so it cooks evenly. Just before the meat is finished, add the flour water in and stir a final time to combine everything. Turn off the heat and get ready to plate quickly. You want the meat to stay soft and not chewy or tough by overcooking. The meat should still be slightly pink in some areas. Take the salad plate out of fridge. Using tongs or a spatula, place the meat on top of the greens, and be sure to get all the juices as well. That is amazing flavor just waiting for you! Finish the dish with freshly ground black pepper. It should be eaten with your hands (like a wrap), and drizzled with the dressing to each persons’ taste. Serve with white rice

Name of Chef: Rany Fischer Family Members: Daughter – Awah (22) Community: 4S Ranch Interests: Hiking, gardening, and exploring the culinary world Favorite Local Activity: Riding my beach cruiser around Balboa Park makes me happy! About the Recipe: I'd like to share this dish with the community because it's healthy and delicious! Most of the ingredients can be found at our local market here in 4S Ranch. This is one of the most popular Cambodian salads – my mom made this often because it got us to eat vegetables and is also really quick and easy to make. There are some variation of this dish (like using cube steak instead of thinly sliced beef), and some might garnish with cucumbers or even fried eggs, but this is the most common version that is served in the home. Even though this dish is simple to cook and assemble, there is a lot going on in every bite. The warm and tender beef, acidic and juicy tomatoes, the snap and bite of the onion, and the crisp lettuce wrap are all tied together when the dressing is drizzled over the top. Is it any wonder that this combination of textures and flavors makes this dish so popular? I guarantee that everyone around your table will be smiling with each bite. About the Chef: Being an insurance agent at the local 4S Ranch Lori Long State Farm agency has given me the opportunity to connect and meet a lot of great people in this community, and I’m so glad that I can share my passion for cooking with everyone. I hope my recipes inspire others to enjoy cooking for family and friends as much as I do! I love to share – please stop by the agency or visit my blog for more recipes at www.ranyskitchen.com.

WHAT’S YOUR STORY? We all have a story to tell. Let me briefly share mine. I grew up all over the country as the son of a U.S. Marine and pastor. After years of an angry life filled with drugs, fist fights, and craziness, God radically transformed my life and called me into full-time ministry. For the past 20 years, I have served as a pastor in several churches. I have also worked in psychiatric hospitals counseling children, youth, and adults with all types of addiction issues. My wife, Jula, is a Registered Nurse, and we have two energetic young boys, Jaxson and Jentzen. We recently moved to North County San Diego from Oregon to start a new church from scratch. The name of this new church is The Shift Church, and our mission is transforming spiritual hunger into devotion to God. This transformation will happen through our 4 C’s: Community is about building relationships.
We desire to help people discover and develop a dynamic relationship with God and each other. Calling is about serving others. We desire to help people discover and develop their spiritual gifts, passion, personality and experiences for the purpose of serving others across the street and around the world. Conversation is about sharing faith stories. We desire to help people discover and develop their lives as a witness so people from all walks of life may come to trust in Jesus Christ as their forgiver and leader. Cultivation is about growing in Jesus. We desire to help people discover and develop a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. I would love to hear your story over coffee. Email me at info@exploretheshift.com to set up a time to connect.

Football Savvy SUZANNE STONEALL TEACHES FOOTBALL NOVICES HOW TO BECOME AVID FANS
92127
resident Suzanne Stoneall is gearing up for another exciting football season. “Coach Suzanne” leads a series of workshops designed to help those unfamiliar with the sport learn more about the fundamentals and the fun of football. Her workshops have a special focus on women, who more frequently didn’t grow up immersed in football culture. “I have a great passion for football and found that many of my female friends said they didn’t like or were bored by the sport. I uncovered that it was often the case that they simply didn’t understand the sport,” explained Suzanne. “They didn’t know enough about the game to enjoy it and were embarrassed to ask in mixed company.” Helping guide her friends through the nuances of the game, team histories, and human interest stories about popular players was so successful that she was inspired to form her own company, Be Football Savvy. Suzanne grew up in Chicago and learned about football from her dad. “From a young age I remember watching NFL games with him on Sundays and learning how to throw a football at the park,” she shared. She moved to San Diego in the early ’90s and currently lives in 92127 with her husband Scott and their three-year-old daughter Amanda. They watch college football together every Saturday and NFL games every Sunday, whether from home or at Qualcomm Stadium. Suzanne added, “Scott and I play fantasy football – reigning champions of our league! – and are thrilled to see Amanda grow up loving sports and catching football fever.” Learn more about Coach Suzanne’s workshops at www.befootballsavvy.com.

YOU COULD CALL US MATCHMAKERS... Brad got a job transfer to the Bay Area. He was moved immediately, leaving Sarah & daughter Brielle in the home until it was sold. They called us and asked if we could have it on the market in 3 days. Our team worked into the night preparing the home and marketing materials, as well as implementing our renowned pre-MLS marketing blitz to get the word out. We got it done - received multiple offers and then matched one of our own buyers, a lovely family with four beautiful children, to this wonderful home. It was a match made in heaven. Our sellers were reunited quickly in the Bay Area and our family of six found just the right home!* We love helping our clients find just the right match. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know we are helping them open a new chapter in their lives. A number of local youth soccer programs recently sent teams to participate in the San Diego Kickin’ It Challenge, including 92127’s Arsenal FC. The Kickin’ It Challenge is a charity tournament raising funds for the San Diego Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure. Founded by Poway Vaqueros Board Members Pam Bickel and Beatrice Cubitt in 2011, the Kickin’ It Challenge has grown substantially in size and impact over the past few years. This year’s tournament showcased the skills of players ages seven to 18 in over 100 teams from over 30 local clubs, and sponsors included Adidas and soccerloco. In addition to the fierce competition there was an air of celebration and community, with participants and volunteers getting dressed to impress in pink. San Marcos Revolution GU10 and FC Heat B12 won the Power of Pink award for best representing the spirit of the tournament – the San Marcos Revolution girls wore matching pink boxing gloves. After a year of partnership, San Diego Charger Eric Weddle and Evolution Lighthouse co-founders Patrick Pickford and Gerly Noland are proud of the impact their collaboration has had on the lives of people affected by domestic violence. They’re also excited to unveil their new 2015 line of Chargers-themed jewelry for fans, with every purchase helping Alliance for Hope support victims and their children. The theme for the line is #WearTheSpotlight. “We love the difference we can make in the lives of children and adults,” said Eric. “Seeing their smiles and breaking them out of a horrible situation is what it’s all about. Everyone deserves a life without domestic violence.” Patrick added, “Eric has been my friend for a number of years, and when domestic violence took over the NFL headlines last year, we immediately started talking about what should be done and what could be done.” Learn more and see the collection at www.evolutionlighthouse.com.

A Lasting Legacy
4S Ranch resident and San Diego State University (SDSU) alumnus Fred Pierce and his wife Christine are leaving a legacy gift of 2.5 million dollars to the university. Fred graduated from SDSU in 1988 with degrees in finance and real estate, and has served as a board member for the SDSU Alumni Association, the Aztec Club, the College of Business Administration, and the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate. The donation will support Aztec Athletics, the College of Business Administration, Greek life, the SDSU Alumni Association, and student scholarships. He and Christine also made a five-year cash pledge to fund areas that will become endowed when the planned gift is realized. “We want our gift to demonstrate the diverse ways of giving to SDSU,” said Fred. His legacy goes beyond his financial and leadership support, though; his daughter Peyton graduated from SDSU this year, and younger daughter Riley is also looking forward to applying.
The Winning Rubber Ducky
The 4th Annual Bob Wells Commemorative Rubber Ducky Race was just as fun as previous years’ events, with over 500 rubber duckies taking the plunge into the pond at Webb Park. The ducks were blown across the pond by two large fans. This year’s race was an extremely close competition, but in the end ducky number 699 edged out the rest of the pack to bring home the win. The winning duck belonged to young community members Cash and Liam Fields, whose grandmother Trish Farrell bought them each a rubber ducky ticket. She stipulated that if either of them won, they would share their winnings of $500. Each grandchild received $125 for their bank accounts and $125 to spend as they wished. Liam shared that he and Cash planned to take their mother, grandmother, and great grandmother out to lunch with part of the winnings. The Rubber Ducky Race, sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo Business Association, is quickly becoming a beloved tradition during Rancho Bernardo’s annual Spirit of the Fourth celebrations. Community Outreach Softball Game
The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Northeastern Division teamed up with the Rancho Bernardo Community Council, Councilmember Mark Kersey, the councilman’s representative Garrett Hager, and members of the community for a community outreach softball game. The event was intended to foster engagement and camaraderie between the division and the community, and by all accounts it was a complete success. “It was all for fun – we kept score but everyone was a winner. We had citizens asking us to make this an annual event,” said Community Relations Officer Shannah Oliveras. “Officers and citizens were looking forward to the possibility of future games.” The SDPD Northeastern Division is already making plans for future events, with the goal of hosting an annual event in each of the division’s communities. “This gives everyone an opportunity to really socialize with each other, share some laughs, and have fun,” said Shannah. “There is no agenda, no structured meeting, no worry of having to rush off to handle the next radio call or report. Just two hours of having a good time.”

Red Shoe Day
Red Shoe Day 2015 was a tremendous success for Ronald McDonald House Charities San Diego. Local businesses and community members volunteered to spend the morning collecting donations. Between Red Shoe Day collections, sponsor support, and corporate and community donors, the event earned $199,000 to support the Ronald McDonald House and the families it serves. The top-earning area this year was Rancho Bernardo, collecting $8,661.75. Poway came in fifth with a total of $6,177.33. San Marcos was the 15th in the county with local groups collecting $2,783.39, and Scripps Ranch was 18th with $2,285.09. Local Kiwanis clubs were particularly successful fundraisers; Kiwanis Club of Rancho Bernardo collected the third highest total of any individual group, with $4,216.38. Kiwanis Club of Poway was right behind with $3,969.71. Members of the ZCode Magazines team, including Editor Sarabeth McElhaney, Director of Business Development Jessica Breaux, and Editorial Assistants Lainey Kral, Randi Cantrell, and Shyanne Lopez, were proud to do their part in Rancho Bernardo, and Sarabeth is a member of the event planning committee.
RB Welcome Sign
The Rancho Bernardo Community Council recently unveiled the new Rancho Bernardo welcome sign on the Rancho Bernardo Rd. median across from the entrance to the Mercardo. Local leaders, including Councilman Mark Kersey, attended the unveiling. The original sign was built in the 1960s but was destroyed in early 2010 by an automobile accident. Insurance funds were used to plan and construct the new sign under the oversight of the RBCC’s Maintenance Assessment District (MAD) Committee. After a number of community-wide conversations, the final design was approved in March 2012. There were some subsequent setbacks, but the sign was completed and revealed in time for this year’s RB Alive celebration. The MAD Committee was established in 1983 and works with City of San Diego staff members to manage landscaping in Rancho Bernardo. Learn more at www.rbcommunitycouncil.com.
Candy Collection for a Cause
Other dentists and orthodontists might dread the oncoming cavities from too many sugary treats, but Dr. Noel Moser and Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer of 92127’s Moser Orthodontics are looking forward to Halloween. To them the spooky, treat-filled holiday represents a tremendous opportunity to give back to the community through their annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back. Every year they collect extra or leftover Halloween candy from local community members. All the candy is donated to military troops and the San Diego Rescue Mission – and for every pound of candy collected, Moser Orthodontics donates one dollar to the donor’s school. Last year the buy-back resulted in over 4,000 pounds of candy collected and over $15,800 donated to local schools. This year’s buy-back will last from Monday, Nov. 2 to Wednesday, Nov. 4. Community members can drop off candy at participating local elementary schools or at the Moser Orthodontics office at 14701 Via Bettona Suite 205 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn more at www.moserortho.com.

Local Girl Scouts Earn Gold Award
Del Norte High School students Elena Crespo, Harpreet Battoo, and Revati Thatte have earned their Girl Scout Gold Awards – the organization’s highest honor – for their outstanding leadership and commitment to taking action in their community. For her Gold Award project, Elena founded a nonprofit called Let Children Learn, organizing student volunteers to provide schools in Central and South America with wheelchairs, books, computers, and other resources. Harpreet harnessed her creative talents by leading workshops to teach homeless women and children – and other community members – to make knitted hats to give to other homeless people. Revati brought an educational initiative with a 10day English lesson series to foster enthusiasm for learning in Bhatiwada, a rural Indian village where schooling opportunities can end after eighth grade. Elena, Harpreet, and Revati are among 43 girls in San Diego and Imperial Valley who earned the Gold Award this year.
Troop 2033 Helps Local Animals
The members of Brownie Troop 2033, a group of students from Monterey Ridge Elementary School, recently completed the “A World of Girls” Leadership Journey by raising awareness about local animals in need and donating toys and supplies. They used a portion of funds raised from this year’s cookie sales to benefit the Escondido Humane Society, hand-crafted toys and pet beds, and distributed informational flyers to educate the community. Troop Member Elise said, “I liked doing this project because I like crafty projects, I really love animals, and I really want a dog!” The girls also got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Humane Society facility. “I liked that we helped the animals, and I liked seeing Toby the cat jump in the cat tree we donated right away,” shared Cara. Her fellow Scout Sophia added, “I wanted to do this project because it benefited the animals and I got to meet the animals I helped.” Learn how you can help by calling the Escondido Humane Society at 760-888-2275.

THE RANCHO BERNARDO YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE GIVES LOCAL BOYS AND GIRLS THE CHANCE TO SHINE
T
he Rancho Bernardo Youth Basketball League (RBYBL) is committed to giving local youths the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, and have fun in a friendly recreational environment. The nonprofit league is open to boys and girls from third grade through
high school, and organizers ensure that everyone has their fair share of time on the court. With parents, older siblings, and other high school students lending a hand with coaching and scorekeeping, RBYBL fosters a tremendous sense of community. The board of directors, composed entirely of volunteer community members, has big plans for the upcoming season – registration opens Sept. 1, and the draft will begin in October. We learned more in our conversation with RBYBL Board Member Matt Farmer.
general
Q&A
When was the Rancho Bernardo Youth Basketball League founded?
What overall experience can basketball players expect while playing for RBYBL?
RBYBL is a nonprofit league run by community members and has been around since 1972! The current board is entering its fourth year running the show.
A fun and competitive environment to learn the great game of basketball from people right in their very own community! As I mentioned earlier, we have had numerous girls make the All Star team, so girls are encouraged to play with the boys. Some of the All Stars of the past few seasons have been current Rancho Bernardo High School star Aly Murray, Elise Jabbour, Vanessa Tredo, Jacey Farmer, Keeley Giles, Gabby Maas, Lolo Reynolds, and Bailey Gehler.
What communities does the league serve? Rancho Bernardo, Poway, 4S Ranch, and even parts of Escondido.
Who is eligible to participate in RBYBL? We have four divisions within the league: third/fourth grade, fifth/sixth grade, seventh/eighth grade, and high school. Every level has both boys and girls competing on the same teams. We usually have many girls who make the All Star teams at the end of the season!
What is RBYBL’s mission? The league promises to give kids a great environment to learn the game as well as a fair outlet to compete against their peers. Team-building and skill apprehension are major pillars of RBYBL.
What is the timeline for the season? Our draft is in October and November with practice commencing shortly thereafter. Games begin the first week January and run through mid-March.
What were some of the highlights of last year’s season? RBYBL completed its best-ever season, as 296 players found their way to the court! The season is capped off with all teams earning playoff berths, then hopefully making their way through the final game. The final Saturday of the season features our All Star Madness, with a three point contest, slam dunk contest, All Star game, and coaches versus high school players game.
Are there any success stories that really stood out for you? One of my favorite stories from last season was that of Tommy Childs, who attends Turtleback Elementary School. Tommy had never played basketball before joining the league, but through the encouragement of Coach Eddy Jabbour he shot baskets daily, worked on his game, and helped lead his team to a win in the championship game in the fifth/sixth grade division. He earned a huge trophy in his first season playing!
How are the teams formed to ensure they are balanced appropriately? The board runs the draft, evaluates each player, and helps each coach with suggestions on players during the draft. Our ideal games all end with very close scores!
September | October 2015 • 92127Magazine.com • 47
:::: COVER FEATURE
How many players and teams does the league have? The league generally draws between 200 and 300 players across the four divisions. The most teams we have fielded in one division is 10 and we try to keep a maximum of eight players on each roster to maximize playing time.
What is your role at RBYBL? What are the most rewarding and challenging parts of this position? I am in charge of the draft process, ordering and distribution of uniforms, and selecting the year-end trophies. I love the look on the kids faces when they see their uniforms for
the first time! The most challenging aspect of the uniforms is making sure everyone has a jersey that fits them just right.
Who are the other board members? What are their responsibilities? George Brashear, League President: George handles nearly all communication, is in charge of the signup process, runs the website with the help of his wife Kim, and oversees the board. Brian Kuck, Treasurer: Brian makes sure the finances of the league are running correctly. He handles and balances the
league checkbook. He also organizes the scorekeepers and payment of referees. Nick Gehler, Miramar College Coach and Head of Bronco Ball: RBYBL has its own in-house collegiate basketball coach. Nick runs the tryouts and All Star Madness, coaches various teams in the league, and lends his overall knowledge behind the scenes to make sure things run smoothly. Tim Spitser, League Protocol: Tim is our lead decision maker on changes in policy at RBYBL. He helps to implement changes to make the games as competitive and fair as possible.
“THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF COACHING AT ANY OF OUR FOUR LEVELS IS TAKING THE BEGINNING ATHLETE AND WATCHING THEM GROW THROUGHOUT THE SEASON.
Tell us about the coaching staff and the type of experience and skills that they bring to the table. We enlist the help of parents – both moms and dads – as well as older siblings to do the coaching for entire league. This brings about a great sense of community. We had three mothers work as head coaches last year, with a bunch of others lending a helping hand!
What is the most rewarding aspect about coaching? The most challenging? The most rewarding aspect of coaching at any of our four levels is taking the beginning athlete and watching them grow throughout
the season. By far for most of our coaches, the most challenging aspects is working around vacations and baseball. Rancho Bernardo is a phenomenal baseball community too so scheduling is sometimes tough to work out.
Where do the league’s referees and scorekeepers come from? RBYBL pays for top-notch officials – the same used by local high school teams in the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity games. Our scorekeeping crew is assembled by board members, their children, and other local teenagers. We substitute every five minutes so every player is guaranteed maximum court time.
Do you have any upcoming fundraisers or events you would like to share with our readers? RBYBL Board Member and Miramar College Head Coach Nick Gehler, along with his staff, has run a summer camp in conjunction with the league these past two years. Over 150 kids have attended the competitive yet fun session. Information on the 2016 camp will be on the www.rbybl.com website. We also don’t want to discourage any players if money is an issue. Please contact the board to find out about scholarships.

“TEAM-BUILDING AND SKILL APPREHENSION ARE MAJOR PILLARS OF RBYBL.” What are the registration dates for your upcoming season?
Are you associated with the Nighthawks or Broncos?
Registration is available online at www.rbybl.com from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31. Walk-up registration at tryouts is sometimes available, but it is best to register beforehand as some levels sell out.
We have had players from both programs in our league (as well as Titans and Escondido players). We have even worked out games between the 4S Ranch All Stars and ours in the past.
Where and when do games take place during the season?
Does RBYBL need volunteers? If so, how does one get involved?
All games at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park Gym and every team has one indoor practice per week at the Westwood Club. Weekly practices are scheduled starting in December and run the length of the season.
We are always looking for coaches and community members to help with the board. Anyone interested should contact League President George Brashear.
What makes RBYBL unique as compared to other recreational basketball leagues? We serve a majority of North County communities with the best bargain around at $110 for the season! We also host All Star Madness in mid-March, where the elite players in each division square off in a game. We also have a three-point shooting contest and slam dunk competition on the same day.
If you had to describe the teams in five words, what would you say? Competitive, fun, community, friendship, BASKETBALL!

EATING GREEN Greenspot Salad Company Serves Wholesome Food for the Whole Family by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Tyler McElhaney
Y
ou won’t find any mysterious six-syllable ingredients at Greenspot Salad Company. The menu at this 4S Ranch eatery is replete with healthy and whole ingredients. Owners Micah Goldfarb and Chef Brendan McCormack are committed to natural foods and custom preparation for every single meal. Micah explained, “We have a very simple belief about our menu, it should all start as whole food. We’ve eliminated almost every ingredient that has any preservatives, or any ingredients that don’t start on a farm.” This guiding principle is evident in Greenspot’s most popular dishes. The Superfood Salad is one of the top sellers: spinach, quinoa, kale, roasted sweet potatoes, broccoli, and avocado, all dressed in a lemon juice and olive oil dressing. “Everyone goes nuts for it, it’s very filling, nutrient rich, reasonably priced, and people love saying ‘Superfood,’” Micah laughed. But the popular dishes are not defined only by salads; soups, wraps, smoothies, and potatoes round out Greenspot’s menu options.
The family-owned and operated business first opened its doors in 2011 in Sorrento Valley, and this past January, the 4S Ranch location opened. Micah explained the impetus: “I used to travel for a living. I found that the ‘Build Your Own’ salad restaurant was fairly common on the East Coast, and it’s where I always wanted to eat. When I would come home to San Diego, I couldn’t figure out why these places weren’t here, wasn’t this California? Everyone loves healthy food! So I knew there was a hole in the marketplace that my idea was perfect for.” Micah partnered with Chef Brendan McCormack, who has worked in fine dining for 25 years, and the pair haven’t looked back. As parents themselves, Micah and Brendan are committed to serving the food they feed their families. Every custom-prepared meal begins from premium, natural foods and is made from scratch. From the Roasted Potato Wedges – roasted, never fried – to the California Turkey Wrap, Greenspot Salad Company is a great option for the entire family that guarantees a delicious, convenient, and healthful dining experience.
“WE’VE ELIMINATED ALMOST EVERY INGREDIENT THAT HAS ANY PRESERVATIVES, OR ANY INGREDIENTS THAT DON’T START ON A FARM.”

im Coutts wanted to volunteer with Voices for Children ever since she heard about the organization, but it wasn’t until a change in jobs last year that she could jump in. She immediately signed up to train as a CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocate. When she learned about the need for more men to help out the boys in the system, she asked her husband Bob to join too. He readily agreed and they went through training together. CASAs are assigned to foster children navigating the court system; they spend time with the children, learn about their individual situations, and are able to advocate for the children’s best interests. “There are a lot of really dedicated social workers, lawyers, and judges that help these kids, but the number of kids they are involved with is usually so high it’s hard for them to really get to know the kids,” explained Kim. “CASAs are able to connect one-on-one with the kids and the other people in their lives.” Kim and Bob have found the experience incredibly rewarding and are honored to help guide their case children through the courts and the other complications of adolescence. “When I first met my case child she was in Juvenile Hall for a minor previous issue,” said Kim. “I have watched her transition from a scared and sad girl to a strong, resilient person with a life plan who got straight As for the first time ever last semester.” Sometimes it’s the small moments that make all the difference. Bob recently attended a dad’s day at his case child’s school, where fathers came in and built wood helicopters with the kids. Bob said, “It meant so much that he didn’t have to be different – he had someone there for him just like all the other kids and that made me feel really good.” Bob’s case child lives with his grandmother, who recently decided to adopt him permanently. Bob shared, “I honestly don’t know if she would have felt comfortable making that decision without knowing she had support in a lot of places.” In addition to volunteering, Kim and Bob spend their time enjoying the local beaches and mountains. They’re both native Southern Californians and love the community they’ve found in Camino Bernardo, where they live with their daughter Katie and their Irish Wolfhound-Wheaton Terrier mix. Voices for Children is always open to volunteers who want to make a positive impact for children in need. Sign up for an upcoming information session at www.speakupnow.org.

:::: FROM THE DENTIST
ATHLETIC MOUTHGUARDS Dental injuries are a common consequence of collision or contact sports and recreational activities. Participants of all ages, genders, and skill levels are at risk of sustaining dental injuries at organized and unorganized, recreational, and competitive levels. Obvious sports requiring mouthguards would include football, boxing, and wrestling. Dental injuries are prevalent, however, in many other sports including basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, and gymnastics to name a few. The habit of wearing a mouthguard can be established at an early age. The mouthguard should be worn during practices as well as during the game or competition. Since the size and shape of the mouth and dentition is constantly changing in the growing child, the mouthguard should be refitted at least yearly. A stable, nonchanging permanent dentition is obtained usually around 12 through 14 years of age. At this time, the mouthguard can be changed less frequently,
maybe every two years. Special modifications can be made to the mouthguard to allow children undergoing orthodontic care to continue mouthguard use. The medical and dental community supports the use of a well-fitted mouthguard as the best available device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports-related dental injuries. Mouthguards provide a resilient, protective surface to distribute and dissipate the force of impact, thereby minimizing the severity of traumatic injury to the teeth and surrounding tissue. The mouthguard must be adapted well to the individual so that it can be worn comfortably allowing for adequate retention of the appliance, as well as satisfactory oral function such as swallowing and breathing. The best mouthguard is the one worn during sport activities. Custom mouthguards are considered by many to be the most protective option due to individualized fit,
DR. CHRIS PHAM
however, other mouthguards can be effective if they fit adequately, are worn properly, and can be retained in place. Ask your dentist about mouthguards and their importance for anyone in your family involved in sports activities.

r. Steve Schneider, DDS opened the doors to his dental practice 25 years ago with a desire to help others and eliminate the fears that many people feel about visiting the dentist. “I wanted to be a dentist since the second grade. I had a fear of going to the dentist and wanted to make sure people did not experience the same anxiety I did. This fear helped build a unique philosophy that has allowed us to treat people differently in our office. We have created a practice where patients are treated as family, with empathy, sensitivity, respect and a little humor thrown in,” explained Dr. Schneider. The atmosphere of the office and use of cutting-edge technology sets it apart from other dental practices. “As patients walk into our office, they are surrounded by a rock-nroll theme. We feel that patients don’t have to be reminded they are in a dental office by the décor,” said Dr. Schneider. And his dental practice has been a research center for

Some auction highlights were a weekend wine-tasting in Santa Barbara, golf for four, a chance to attend the American Music Awards, a signed Taylor Swift CD, and autographed Dan Marino, Magic Johnson, and Tony Gwynn memorabilia. SDYS 70th Anniversary China Tour LOCAL MUSICIANS TAKE TRIP OF A LIFETIME
T
he San Diego Youth Symphony’s (SDYS) recent 70th Anniversary China Tour allowed advanced musicians from all over San Diego, including Rancho Bernardo High School, to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in concerts in three Chinese cities between the end of June and beginning of July. The jam-packed itinerary took the musicians to Beijing, Yantai, and Shanghai, and though some of their time was split between rehearsing and preparing for their performances, they were also able to see famous sights and connect with the locals. They toured locations such as the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Yu Garden and Bazaar, and of course the Great Wall. Many of the SDYS students enjoyed the cultural exchange aspect
of the trip as well. Local student Owen Cruise shared, “On our last day in Beijing we visited students at Beijing Music Conservatory High School. Some of my favorite experiences with the students was experiencing the novelty of the traditional Chinese instruments and their amazing sounds. I enjoyed bonding with the students over lunch and learning about their school life.” Another student, Amanda Chen, commented, “The Chinese people were so warm and welcoming to us during our stay! The hospitality of the Chinese people was truly touching.” The musicians performed at the Forbidden City Concert Hall, the Poly Grand Theater, and the Oriental Arts Center. SDYS last visited China in 1981 when they had the honor of touring and performing in Canton, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing. For more information visit www.sdys.org/china-2015.

:::: HOME TIPS
t e g d u B On a
BUDGET-FRIENDLY HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS TO TRICK OUT YOUR HOUSE THIS FALL
A
by RANDI CANTRELL
lthough the warm weather of the San Diego summer still lingers into September, the start of fall is quickly approaching, and with it the fun of preparing for all of the upcoming seasonal traditions and holidays. Halloween will be here before we know it – bringing festive décor and props such as spooky spiders and supernatural ghouls to your neighborhood – but all of that preparation doesn’t have to break the bank. Scare up your crafting skills and get into the spirit by using these tips to create your own one-of-a-kind Halloween decorations.
Front Door Mummy
Have some left-over white streamers from a recent birthday party or family celebration? Put these to good use by taping the paper streamers to your front door in strips, making sure to overlap the layers for a wrapped look. Next take some white and black construction paper and a pair of scissors. Cut two large white circles and two smaller black circles to make eyes for your mummy and secure them to the door by taping them to the paper streamers. Another option is to use black streamers to create a monster completely from your own imagination!
Ghost Lanterns
Recycle old gallon milk jugs and light the way to your door for trick-or-treaters with ghosty lanterns. Rinse out an empty gallon milk jug until it is completely clean, then draw on a spooky face with a black permanent marker such as a Sharpie. From there, cut a small hole in the back of the jug, drop in some white holiday
lights, and plug your new creation into an outdoor outlet to give your lantern a ghastly glow.
Glowing Eyes
Add some mystery to your front yard foliage by creating glowing eyes from used cardboard tubes such as toilet paper or paper towel rolls. Just make eye-shaped cuts out of the cardboard, place a glowstick inside the tube, and tuck it away into the bushes along your front walkway. To achieve a more haunting effect, make a bunch of different sets and scatter them throughout the bushes and trees in your yard.
Paint Your Pumpkin
Let out your inner artist and take a less-traditional approach to pumpkin decorating this year with paint or glitter. While you’re at the pumpkin patch, look for one that’s a good shape without too many bumps, cuts, or soft spots, as these will make painting more difficult. Also check to
64 • 92127Magazine.com • September | October 2015
make sure that the bottom is flat enough to allow the pumpkin to sit up straight. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it completely before you begin. Next, decide whether you’ll be painting the whole pumpkin or just a small part of it. If you’re planning to completely cover it in paint, do this in stages to allow the paint to dry in between. Acrylic paints work best, but feel free to embellish your masterpiece with glitter or props such as a hat or costume jewelry.
Window Silhouettes This classic decor idea is simple and quick, but still adds a lot of flair. Pull together some black construction paper, a pencil, some scissors, and tape, and get to work tracing your favorite Halloweeninspired shapes – think bats, black cats, spiders, or skeletons. Once you’re ready, carefully cut out your design and adhere it to your window with tape. When it’s dark outside but your lights are on, the shapes will create spooky silhouettes for your neighbors to enjoy.

Teaming Up NORTH COUNTY LOCALS WORK TOGETHER TO CURE PSORIASIS WITH THE 9th ANNUAL TEAM NPF WALK
T
he National Psoriasis Foundation’s (NPF) 9th Annual Team NPF Walk is coming to Crown Point in Mission Bay Park on Sunday, Oct. 11. This year’s chairperson is Encinitas resident Hillel Katzeff, who has had psoriatic arthritis for over 30 years. He was inspired to chair the walk at the organization’s biannual volunteer conference. “Learning that NPF exists and what they do has opened my world,” said Hillel. “I was taken aback by the love and support of the many parents who were present to actively give back to support the organization for their children who have psoriatic disease.”

TEAM NPF WALK
Three Rancho Bernardo organizers and board members also traveled to San Francisco for the conference. Stephanie Gearhart of Rancho Bernardo and Cristina Mariano and Mike Refermat of 4S Ranch have a combined 20 years of volunteerism with the foundation and are passionate about finding a cure for a disease that directly impacts each of them – along with almost 70,000 other San Diegans. Local Solana Beach resident and Canyon Crest Academy student Alyson Tharp has also been devoting her time towards helping others affected by psoriasis. She was first diagnosed at the age of 10. “When I was first diagnosed, I had no idea that psoriasis existed. It quickly began to affect my everyday life,” explained Alyson. She only recently learned about NPF and is grateful for the support she’s found in the community. “I only know one other person with psoriasis, so it was eye-opening to see the community that is trying to find a cure. I am now aware that I am not defined by psoriasis or living in its shadow, but that I wouldn’t be who I am today without it.” Alyson is a 2015 Youth Ambassador for NPF. “By sharing her story she is raising awareness about psoriatic disease and helping her peers understand and address their condition,” said Stephanie. “Alyson is an inspiration and we are lucky to have her.” The Team NPF Walk has no registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to fundraise for the cause. The day will also include fun family activities like a costume contest, carnival games, giveaways, and more. “The walk is a great opportunity for those affected by psoriasis to meet others with the disease, get support, connect with doctors and psoriasis product vendors, and participate in a fun event for a great cause,” said Mike. FALL
ON THE FARM
San Diego Pumpkin Patches Promise Plenty of Fun This Season by LAINEY KRAL
A
s the days get a little bit shorter and nights get a little bit colder – as cold as they ever get in San Diego – it’s time to enjoy the opportunities of autumn. Perhaps nothing symbolizes fall festivities as much as the pumpkin. Whether carved and lit as a jack-o-lantern, baked into a pie, or simply displayed for the holidays, this round orange squash is a critical component of the season. Throughout the month of October, local farms will open up their gates to welcome families eager to pick out their own. San Diego offers a wide variety of pumpkin patches, with something to suit any family’s idea of a perfect autumn day. There are corn mazes, bounce houses, hayrides, train rides, and tasty fall treats. Most are open to the public from late September through Oct. 31 – check out the farms’ websites for detailed hours and available activities. Those who are interested in a simpler, purely pumpkin-oriented experience might want to visit Lavender Hill Pumpkins in Fallbrook. Lavender Hill offers 35 different varieties of pumpkins, squash, and other gourds to pick straight from the vine, ranging
in size from the miniature Munchkin to the North Atlantic Giant. You can find organic pumpkins at Suzie’s Farm, where visitors can take a guided tour of the whole farm in addition to picking their own pumpkins. Farm Stand West has a produce stand with delicious seasonal offerings. If kids or parents want to get to know some four-legged farm folk, a number of pumpkin patches also have petting corrals. Try Bates Nut Farm, Mountain Valley Ranch, or Oma’s Pumpkin Patch for an up-close experience. Pumpkin Station Farms in Bonita and Rancho Bernardo let visitors learn about the farm animals, and kids can saddle up for a pony ride at Bates Nut Farm and Peltzer Farms. The latter also has pig races to cheer on.

ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently recognized local Fitness Quest 10 as the 2015 Small Business of the Year for the 77 th Assembly District. The North County business is owned by Todd Durkin, who spent his career training professional NFL, MLB, and WNBA athletes before opening his gym in 2000. The business has grown from small beginnings into a full-service gym with a staff of 38, and has been named one of the top 10 gyms in the country by Men’s Health for the past four years. “For 15 years, Todd has used his expertise working with some of the country’s top professional athletes to inspire people of all ages to take control of their lives by making healthier diet and exercise choices,” said Maienschein. “Fitness Quest 10 was founded on my belief that every single person can lead a healthy, fulfilling life if they have the discipline, have a positive attitude, and surround themselves with the right
people,” said Durkin. “It is an incredible honor to be recognized by Assemblymember Maienschein as the 2015 Small Business of the year, and I am proud to share the recognition with the hardworking Fitness Quest 10 team and all of our clients.” The Small Business of the Year for each district is nominated by that district’s legislator every year and recognized by the California Small Business Association. Legislators select businesses based on their business ethics and community services, and winning business owners travel to Sacramento to receive their award. Last year’s Small Business of the Year Award went to ZCode Magazines. Publisher and Co-Owner Derrick Breaux, Creative Director and Co-Owner Tyler McElhaney, Editor Sarabeth McElhaney, and Director of Business Development Jessica Breaux were proud to accept the award on behalf of the rest of the team.

2015 Nighthawks Fall Sports Preview
W
elcome to the 2015 fall sports season. We are kicking off the first season of the 2015-2016 school year with great momentum and excitement after finishing a very successful 2014-2015 campaign. We are so proud of our students’ hard work and accomplishments on and off the field, court, mat, and pool deck. We have logged 50 league titles in the past five seasons with seven CIF titles. Our boy’s track and field team won their third CIF title in a row. We are preparing for strong competition in the North County Conference while maintaining our high standards academically. We honored over 125 student-athletes during the Athletic Awards Night.
An impressive statistic to highlight, there were 109 juniors and seniors earning a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better. This season we expect a lot of high-powered games coming to Del Norte. We will be hosting top-ranked competitors which should be a great challenge for our student-athletes. With over 1,100 student-athletes at Del Norte, we offer 27 teams and see our programs growing into one of the San Diego section’s top competitors. Our athletic department believes we have highly motivated student-athletes, coaches, and staff who promote the success of programs through our motto, “Earned Never Given.” We

are continuing our quest for building a culture of success, establishing traditions for future Nighthawks and graduating student-athletes well prepared for post high school endeavors. We welcome and encourage the community to fill the stadium, tennis courts, pool deck, gym, and fields. We encourage our community to bring the family out for all the competitions. On behalf of DNHS athletics we encourage you to join the “Flock” in making the 2015 fall season one for the record books. ~ Mike Giaime, Athletic Director

he Maranatha athletic program is hoping to continue building on the success they had in the 2014-15 school year when nearly every sports team qualified for a CIF playoff berth. The 2014 Ocean League Champion varsity football team has new challenges ahead as they will face tougher competition with their move up to the Pacific League. Sixth-year Head Coach Michael Cole feels his squad is a legitimate contender for another league title.
He returns seven All-League players including five First Team players (Isaac Schwan, Jake Bronson, Christian Cortes, Daniel Trent, and Antonio Partida) and two Second Team players (Matt DeWildt and Trevor Sheng). Second-year head coach Mary Beiler is taking all the right steps to bring her girls volleyball program to the next level. After a solid off-season of hard work, the girls are primed to make a run for the Ocean League Title.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Real Estate Matters
You’ve Been Transferred. Do You Sell or Lease? by SCOTT VOAK
H
aving an engineering background with experience running companies, a lot of my clients are engineers or former engineers, now executives. As such, I have recently been receiving calls about what to do in the case of a job transfer out of the area (this has been driven by Qualcomm’s layoff announcement). Each person and family is different and has different goals and concerns, so there is no one right answer, but here are some things to consider if you think you may be put into this situation: Is the move permanent or is it possible you will return to San Diego? If you’re not convinced this is a permanent move, you might want to lease the house for a couple of years to see if want to stay in the new location. Are you planning to purchase or rent in your new location? Or, for those moving to the Silicon Valley, can you purchase a suitable home even if you sell your home here? If you keep your home in San Diego and purchase in your new destination, do you have too much of your money tied up in real estate? (This is where a financial advisor is helpful.) Is your home a good rental home and is your home a good long or short-term rental? The rental market is very hot right now. But for homes with extensive yards and fragile appointments (think hardwood floors versus a three-year-old throwing a temper tantrum), the potential for costly repairs when the tenant moves out may be a deterrent.
There are also issues related to the economy, interest rates, and capital gains taxes to consider. If you’re facing this decision, give me a call. We handle both sales and property management and can talk you through the opportunities of each.

The Beauty in Not Knowing
I
f I had a nickel for every time someone asked me what I want to do when I grow up, I’d have enough money to buy doughnut holes for every Nighthawk. That nickel count is only increasing as college application season falls upon us. My answer changes almost every time: at first a marine biologist, then a veterinarian, and for a brief moment an entertainment lawyer. After being asked countless times, my new answer is, “I don’t know.” That answer may frustrate adults wanting kids to know what they want their lives to look like by age 18, but I’m happy with my answer. See, the beauty in not deciding is that it leaves the world wide
open to discovery. When nothing is chosen, everything is possible. At Del Norte, every student has the opportunity to take an out-of-the-ordinary class like 3D animation or business management, allowing students to explore some of the countless possibilities the world has to offer. These classes may inspire a true calling, or discourage the wrong career choice, which is equally valuable. Our class of 2016 only has nine more months left in the Nighthawk Nest, but we plan to make the most of it. We plan to laugh, to learn, to grow, and to celebrate our last year. We plan to get those stressful college

applications done and choose our next life steps carefully. Some of us knew our calling as children, and some of us wait, hopeful that college provides unforeseen pathways and roads not yet traveled. The world is ours and will be what we make of it. That is why we must take our time finding our way. So next time someone asks what I want to be when I grow up, I’ll happily say, “I don’t know yet, but I look forward to finding out.”
Amelia Cecchetto is a senior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine.
