:::: FROM THE PUBLISHER

Vol. 7, No. 1 TM

Publisher Derrick Breaux

Let’s Party!

Creative Director Tyler McElhaney

W

e created San Diego’s first “zip code-based” magazine six years ago. We now have 14 magazines spanning across most of North San Diego County. The combined direct-mailed circulation between all magazines is approximately 220,000 homes. It all started with a mission to create a hyper-local community magazine that people actually wanted to read. I like to say that whether you are four years old or 104 years old, there’s a little something inside the pages for everyone. While ZCode has some of the most passionate employees working hard to keep delivering interesting local content to your homes, the talented ZCode team is just one part of the equation that makes it all work. Although each and every magazine is mailed directly to your home for free, make no mistake, there is a significant cost to do so. I have the privilege to attend many local events. When I am out and about, people often come up to me to compliment the magazines and thank me for publishing them. While I certainly appreciate the positive feedback, I too am just one tiny part of the equation. The recognition and thanks should definitely be directed elsewhere. The people that are truly responsible (and should be thanked personally) are the advertising partners. The businesses that you see and read about throughout the pages of ZCode Magazines are the ones that make it all possible. It’s very simple. Without their participation, ZCode Magazines would not exist. They are the ones that bear the financial commitment of allowing ZCode to produce this special treat about the communities that we all live in that is delivered to your mailbox issue after issue, year after year. Last month, we held an advertiser appreciation event at our office in Rancho Bernardo. We hope that this was the first of an ongoing Derrick Breaux annual event – let’s be honest and call it a PARTY – where ZCode is able Publisher to publicly recognize some of the advertising partners that have gone the extra mile, whether they realize it or not, to assist in getting these magazines into your homes. While I personally wanted to recognize each and every business that participates in ZCode Magazines, since they all play an important role, we focused primarily on businesses that have been supporters for five or more continuous years, as well as a few category-specific businesses that we felt deserved special recognition. Be sure to be on the lookout for photos and a list of the recipients in the next issue and online (they were not yet available at time of print for this issue). I hope you enjoy this issue of 92127 Magazine. As you flip through the pages, pay close attention to the local businesses that have committed to being a part of your community and playing a role in helping to create and deliver this publication. I encourage you to take a moment to give them a nod or thumbs up the next time you see them, visit their place of business, or use their services. Acknowledgement goes a long way. I promise that they will appreciate the feedback and recognition. I want to personally thank the ZCode advertising partners, and dedicate this issue specifically to the businesses that make this all possible. Each and every one of them plays a part!

Sohan Kandadi is a Champion at Table Tennis Competitions by LINDA FRABL | photos by Spark Photography

F

or many of us, table tennis is simply a lighthearted game we play on those occasions when we stumble upon a ping pong table. For 15-year-old Sohan Kandadi, however, table tennis is his number one passion. He holds numerous championship titles in the sport. This sophomore at Del Norte High School is the California State Games Junior Boys Gold Medalist for 2014 and 2015, and he is the 2014 North American Team Division 3 Champion. He also holds the gold medal for open doubles in the state of California. Name: School: Grade: Parents: Sibling: Favorite Places in 92127:

Sohan Kandadi (15) Del Norte High School 10 Keerthi and Srinivas Kandadi Anviti (11) Anywhere hanging out with my friends

16 • 92127Magazine.com • November | December 2015

Sohan was first exposed to table tennis while living in India, where he resided from the age of 10 to 13. He recalled, “My mom introduced me to table tennis at a country club rec room in India, and I originally thought it was kind of boring. But after a while, I got better and better at it, and then I really started to like it!” Fortunately the incredible training Sohan has received in the past five years has greatly improved his skill level and approach to the game. Sohan explained, “I used to get emotional and angry during matches, but my coach has helped me to stay focused on my strategy and not on the end result. Now I am a relatively quiet player and I don’t show much emotion. Being calm enables me to think clearly and adjust my game plan as needed.” In order to maintain his level of success, Sohan trains three times a week for an hour and a half. He also follows a rigorous fitness routine, including weight lifting and running, to sustain the stamina needed for all of his tournaments. But even with all of his efforts going toward table tennis, Sohan still manages to dabble in other extracurricular activities. He professed, “I have a versatile nature, so I also do soccer, badminton, basketball, chess, taekwondo, and acoustic guitar in my spare time.” His spare time is limited, though. When he does have some breathing room, Sohan enjoys “chilling with my friends” while playing video games and dining at either Mexican or Chinese food establishments. He also loves hanging out with his family, including his younger sister and his pet Maltese poodle. Sohan proudly exclaimed, “My family always inspires and encourages me.” Spoken like a true champ. 

:::: FACES IN THE CROWD

MR.COUGHLIN Onstage Depending on the Venue, Martin Coughlin May be Teaching High School, Coaching Soccer, or Playing Live Music

by LYDIA COBB | photo by Spark Photography

S

tudents at Westview High School know him as their social science teacher. Outside of class, Martin Coughlin is a singer-songwriter, soccer coach, and family man. He and his wife, Lauren, have three children at Westwood Elementary. His own journey – from pro soccer player to teacher to musician – is rooted in Paisley, Scotland, were he was born. Martin reflected, “I have great memories of being at my grandparents’ house as a kid and listening to all my relatives singing songs and laughing.” His family moved to Rancho Bernardo from Scotland when Martin was 11 years old. His parents still live here and his siblings live nearby. Martin left high school to play pro soccer for Glasgow Celtic in 1994. “One of my favorite memories was defeating our biggest rivals, Glasgow Rangers, on my 18th birthday, especially since I assisted the goal that won us the match,” shared Martin. He retired from pro soccer after three years and returned home for school. While in college at CSU San Marcos earning his B.A. in Social Science, he and his brothers started the band Square Go and played in notable San Diego venues. Martin took a few years off from music before writing and recording as a solo artist beginning in 2010. He’s drawn to a diversity of genres from Motown to country. “But I always seem to come back to the timeless songs from The Beatles, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac,” mentioned Martin. His publishing and production company, Laki Music, produces shows at several venues, including The Company Pub and O’Harley’s, where he also hosts weekly open mics. “I have a great relationship with Studio West and will continue to record and produce some records through the end of the year there,” added Martin. KPRI 102.1 FM plays him and has featured Martin in some of their sponsored shows. He completed his master’s degree in his first years at Westview High, and has been on staff since it opened more than a decade ago. “I absolutely love teaching at Westview High as it’s an amazing school with fantastic kids and a wonderful staff,” shared Martin. The Coughlins feel fortunate to raise their kids here. “Even though I was born in Scotland, and very proud of that heritage, home will always be Rancho Bernardo for me,” he added. :::: FROM THE DENTIST

INFANT Oral Health Care Infants Should See a Pediatric Dentist Before Their 1st Birthday by DR. CHRIS PHAM, 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

M

any parents are surprised to hear that their infant should visit the pediatric dentist before their first birthday. Our patients’ first visit begins with a tour where we introduce both the parents and the children to our friendly and inviting office designed specifically for children. They will meet the dentist and will be checked for early childhood caries, also known as baby bottle decay. This condition can be detected as early as the first exam if unhealthy dietary habits such as frequent snacking on sugary foods and prolonged bottle feeding are occurring. After seeing the dentist, an oral hygiene instructor will see the child and demonstrate proper brushing,

lending some advice to make brushing at home easier and more effective. Until the child can tie their own shoes, they do not have the dexterity to brush their own teeth effectively; therefore an adult should assist the child with both brushing and flossing if appropriate. Many other topics can be addressed at a first visit such as pacifier and thumb habits and growth and development, as well as if the patient is obtaining adequate amounts of fluoride or if there are any needs for early or preventive orthodontic care. As parents know all too well, as a child learns to walk and explore their surroundings the chance of oral trauma inevitably increases. Emergency dental care can be provided more comfortably if a relationship with a pediatric dentist has already been established. Our baby teeth play a vital role in chewing, speaking clearly, guiding the eruption of our permanent teeth, and allowing children to smile with confidence. When we see children early

we have a much better chance of preventing many dental problems. Infant oral exams are intended to get the child on the right path for a lifetime of healthy smiles. 

he Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) recently hosted its 2nd Annual Community Safety Fair at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. After the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural event, expectations were high – and the event delivered despite the heat. Twenty-five different safety and emergency preparedness organizations participated with booths and activities for a day of fun and education. Community members got to experience a taste of the chaos a massive earthquake could cause in the earthquake simulation truck. The San Diego FireRescue Department offered firetruck tours. The Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol provided children ages 12 and under with free fingerprinting. Other participating organizations included the Burn Institute, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Rancho Bernardo Emergency Radio Service, San Dieguito River Park, and Santaluz Emergency Response. ife in the Heritage neighborhood of 4S Ranch was just what Nicole and Scott Cohen were seeking 10 years ago. The family-friendly neighborhood and excellent school system prompted the short move from Carmel Valley for the Cohens, who knew they would be starting a family shortly. Today their daughters Ashleigh and Lauren are very active in the community. Students at Stone Ranch Elementary School, they spend their

extracurricular time involved in dance, swimming, gymnastics, art, and Girl Scouts. Nicole can often be found volunteering at their school and co-leading the Girl Scout troop. Prior to motherhood, Nicole worked in interior design, specializing in stone and tile. Scott’s career began at the age of 16 when he began working in the nursery and landscape industry. He now owns South Coast Wholesale, providing mature trees and palms across the sunbelt of the U.S. and even the Caribbean. “He has provided palms and trees to many projects including the Wynn Encore, Newport Beach Marriot, Universal Studios, and many private estates,” shared Nicole. For the past several years, the Cohen family, with the help of Scott’s business, has participated in the Arbor Day Celebration at Balboa Park. “We have provided over 1,000 small oak trees for children to plant in and around San Diego,” Scott said. Family life and the tree farm intersect more than once a year on Arbor Day. Nicole explained, “Ashleigh was named after the ashes of the 2007 wildfires. She was born three weeks after the fires that destroyed a large portion of our business.” The Cohens rebuilt with an even greater purpose in mind. “We carved out an area for children to have their own park and playground,” Scott said. Now the area is sometimes host to parties, barbecues, and family events. As 4S Ranch residents, the Cohen family enjoys the parks, the beach, and access to many activities. They appreciate all the opportunities of life in 92127 – the ability to own a local business, support the community, and be a part of a neighborhood with so much to offer. 

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE

~ Mr. Jeff ’s ~

Ingredients 1¼ ¼ ¼ 1 ½ ¼ 4 2 ¼ 1 1 1 1 2

pounds ground beef pound ground pork or ground sausage pound ground veal egg cup Italian bread crumbs cup fresh grated cheese (Parmesan, Romano, or Parmigiana-reggiano) cloves fresh chopped garlic (more if you really like garlic) tablespoons chopped onion cup fresh chopped parsley tablespoon basil teaspoon oregano teaspoon Italian seasoning Salt and pepper to taste tablespoon olive oil tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Directions 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Mix all of the ingredients together really well – it's easier if you use your hands. Start the oven at 425 degrees F. I have an olive oil sprayer, so I lightly spray the baking dish before I form the meatballs. Make the meatballs approximately 4 ounces each, or bigger if you like. I have done both. Once you have them in your baking dish, cover with tin foil and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the size of the meatball and your oven heat. After that time, take off the tin foil and leave in for 10 minutes more to brown the tops of the meatballs, then remove. We make a little spaghetti and sauce to pour all over them. Enjoy! Makes: Approximately 8 to 9 meatballs Total Time: 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes

So as I usually do, I changed and mixed them up a bit. I very seldom use a recipe exactly how it is written. I wrote down the ingredients I liked, I left out the ones I didn’t, and this is what I came up with. About the Chef: I was a Real Estate Appraiser for approximately 10 years. I am a handyman in the 4S Ranch area. I love fixing and building things. I make my own meat rub, called Mr. Jeff's Rustic Rub. I love to cook, barbecue, and change up recipes. 

Second Chance Fields NONPROFIT SLATED TO HELP RESTORE DEL NORTE HIGH SCHOOL’S SPORT FIELDS

D

el Norte High School (DNHS) has partnered with Second Chance Fields (SCF), a nonprofit organization founded and run by Josh Pratchard, to restore the lower DNHS sports fields. SCF’s mission is to help high schools whose sport fields have become unsafe or unusable due to damage and drought, and the nonprofit has agreed to completely remove and replace one of DNHS’s three fields. Upon successful completion of the project, the district will be able to replace a second field as well. “The destruction of these fields was definitely beyond anything we had seen before,” said Josh. “During the summer months this field has no green, healthy grass on it at all. Forty percent had been completely stripped of any grass and was simply dirt. To make matters worse, the areas where the dirt was completely

exposed also had green netting exposed, causing a major tripping hazard.” Using rain water with high salt content to irrigate the fields had contaminated the soil and meant that previous attempts to restore the field were unsuccessful. Meetings between Josh, Athletic Director Mike Giaime, Principal Greg Mizel, and District Maintenance Director Mike Tarantino resulted in the plan to completely replace the top four inches of soil across the entire field. The project will begin in April to take advantage of the planned grass’s growth period. A test plot of land in a corner of the school has already proven successful. The project is currently seeking donations to help restore the DNHS sports fields. Learn more at www.secondchancefields.org. 

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Willow Grove Elementary Events

Willow Grove Elementary School and the Willow Grove Educational Foundation have a fun calendar lined up for the next two months. First up is the 7th Annual Willow Grove Golf Tournament, which will tee off at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16 at the Santaluz Club. Participants will have a chance to win $2,500 at the helicopter ball drop – balls will be $10 each or 13 for $100. Community members, whether or not they were able to participate in the tournament, are then invited to conclude the evening with a dinner and cocktail party featuring auctions and music. Then the 6th Annual Holiday Boutique will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 in the Willow Grove Multi-Purpose Room. Admission is free, with vendors offering crafts, gourmet food gifts, clothes, and jewelry, as well as a blow dry and braid bar and a beauty bar. All proceeds from the boutique and the golf tournament will benefit the Willow Grove Education Foundation; learn more at www.willowgrovefoundation.org.

BHCC Turf Reduction Program

Local Bernardo Heights Country Club has been making an effort to save water and make a difference during the ongoing drought. A $3.97 million turf reduction and course beautification program was designed to remove over 60 acres of turf and replace it with drought-tolerant plants. Spearheaded by Superintendent Jim Alwine, the plan removed one third of the golf course’s turf with the goal of saving water without negatively impacting the play experience on the course. The course aesthetic is different but thoughtfully designed, with dark mulch, decomposed granite, and a variety of desert plants. The new plants are irrigated with the more efficient drip irrigation thanks to an $800,000 irrigation upgrade. The former ryegrass turf was completely replaced with Bermuda grass. The project is anticipated to reduce BHCC’s water consumption by at least 25 percent, meeting the water use reduction requirements recently mandated by Governor Jerry Brown.

Karina’s Ballerina

A utility box painted in honor of a young Rancho Bernardo resident was recently unveiled. Twelve-year-old Karina Fares passed away after an accident while on vacation with her family in February. Karina was an avid gymnast, swimmer, soccer player, and musician, among other interests. A local artist and fellow Westwood resident, Nina Mascardo, took a piece of original artwork by Karina and translated the image to a large painting on the utility box. Nina, representatives from the Rancho Bernardo Community Council, Councilman Mark Kersey, and the Fares family came together with friends and schoolmates to celebrate the unveiling in Karina’s memory. The box is located at the intersection of West Bernardo Dr. and Matinal Rd. – the Rancho Bernardo Community Council chose this location because Karina’s family members live nearby and pass the area daily. Her friends and family will be able to remember her whenever they pass by the box.

Fire Station Pancake Breakfast

The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, which serves 38 square miles and over 29,000 citizens in Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, and 4S Ranch via four fulltime fire stations, is gearing up to celebrate Fire Prevention Month. The annual Pancake Breakfast at RSF Fire Station 2 will be held Sunday, Nov. 8 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The station is located at 16930 Four Gee Rd. in 4S Ranch. District firefighters will serve pancakes, eggs, orange juice, and coffee for a donation of $5 for adults and $3 for kids. The event will also include an open house with station tours, photos with firefighters, and fire engine and ambulance displays. Visitors can get some hands-on experience by spraying a fire hose with a firefighter or learning hands-only CPR. Jump houses, t-shirt sales, and more fun activities will round out the day. Find out more by calling 858-756-5971 or visiting www.rsf-fire.org.

The 2nd Annual Carnival39 is coming to Design39Campus on Saturday, Nov. 7. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the school will be transformed into a family-friendly carnival with games, rides, music, food, and free admission to the entire community. Some favorite activities from last year will make a return appearance, including the 300-foot zip line. The Veterans History Project

Established in 2000 by the U.S. Congress, the Veterans History Project is a nationwide movement to record and preserve the lives and stories of U.S. veterans as a legacy for their families and future generations. Local resident Stan Smith, a World War II veteran, was one of the first to be interviewed for the project out of Congressman Scott Peters’ office, and thought so highly of his experience that he volunteered to recruit and interview other local veterans to tell their stories. “I have personally heard many exciting and emotional stories from several notable veterans, including men who were bombed on ships at Pearl Harbor in 1941. I believe the entire country could benefit by these stories before they are lost forever,” shared Stan. All local veterans are eligible to participate in this project. For those interested in participating, contact Stan directly at 858-485-5398. To learn more visit www.loc.gov/vets.

Rancho Bernardo residents and artists Terry Anderson and Marlene Levitt were selected to showcase their art along with 29 other artists at the 1st Annual Rancho Santa Fe Art, Rhythm, & Wine event. Terry and Marlene collaborate under the name Temáre, painting abstract pieces while working simultaneously on the same canvas. Rancho Santa Fe Art, Rhythm, & Wine was hosted by FINE magazine and The Crosby at Rancho Santa Fe HOA, bringing together the best of local jewelry designers, mixed media artists, painters, photographers, sculptors, and more. The art walk was free to the public all afternoon before guests enjoyed live music, gourmet food tastings, and wine and beer tastings. Proceeds helped support The Country Friends, a charity founded in 1954 to raise funds for local human care agencies. Organizations funded this year include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Helen Woodward Animal Center, San Diego Second Chance Program, and Voices for Children. Learn more at www.thecountryfriends.com.

DNHS Makes Top 500 List

Del Norte High School (DNHS) ranked 209th out of 500 on Newsweek’s “America’s Top High Schools” list this year. The high school rankings assess schools based on a broad range of data to determine which institutions do the best job of preparing students for college. DNHS was given a college readiness score of 81.2 and has a 99.7 percent graduation rate. The average SAT score is 1709 and the average ACT score is 25.3. AP students score an average of 3.7 on their exams. The college readiness score was based on a weighted index of six indicators including college enrollment rate, graduation rate, weighted AP/IB/Dual Enrollment composite, weighted SAT or ACT composite, student retention rate, and counselor-to-student ratio. Newsweek also identified schools that do an excellent job of preparing their students for college while at an economic disadvantage, titled “Beating the Odds.” For more information on both lists visit www.newsweek.com/high-schools/americas-top-high-schools-2015.

The stretch of Interstate 15 between Scripps Poway Parkway and Camino Del Norte was recently dedicated as the Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway. Dr. Alicia Gwynn, Tony Gwynn, Jr., and Anisha Gwynn Jones joined Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, and Caltrans District Director Lori Berman for the dedication ceremony, unveiling the memorial signs. The freeway was named thanks to Assembly Concurrent Resolution 63, authored by Maienschein. “Tony Gwynn and his family left a lasting impact on San Diego through his impressive feats on the baseball field, dedication to San Diego State University, and the Gwynn family’s commitment to bettering the lives of children in the region,” said Maienschein. “The Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway is traveled by thousands of vehicles each day, and the new signs will serve as a visual reminder of the last impact Gwynn made on our community.” Find out more about Tony Gwynn’s legacy and the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation at www.gwynndustries.com.

Broadcom Toastmasters Club President

Mohan Srinivasan CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY BEHIND BROADCOM TOASTMASTERS? The Broadcom Toastmasters Club was founded on May 1, 2009. Our club was sponsored by Yan Gao and Norm Nomura. We initially had 24 charter members. As any club, our club has seen its share of members coming and going. The current club still has two charter members as active members. HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY FIRST BECOME INVOLVED WITH TOASTMASTERS? It was by curiosity. I attended the first meeting as a guest, and ever since it got on to me. Toastmasters meetings continuously enhance my communication, listening, and leadership skills. This is a stark, non-intrusive way to make constant improvements in these areas. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITHIN THE CLUB? I am president of the club. My duty involves presiding over club meetings and club executive committee meetings, sets the tone of the club, and plays a key role in setting up and meeting the goal of the club by collaborating with members.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING IN BROADCOM TOASTMASTERS? Craig also acts as our webmaster. Our current sergeant at arms is Ken Lu. This is Ken’s first term as an officer for this club. HOW DOES A TYPICAL MEETING GO? A typical meeting will have the standard club meetings format, with at least one speech, a table topic round, functionaries giving their respective reports, general, and speech evaluation reports. This is followed with the next meeting agenda points and role assignments. The president then briefly touches upon any other important points, if any. Cymer Toastmasters President

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY BEHIND CYMER TOASTMASTERS? Cymer Toastmasters was founded with the leaders of Cymer more than 10 years ago. It was recognized that Cymer employees exhibited an opportunity for improvement on communication skills, meeting facilitation, and presentations. Since Cymer Toastmasters was founded, the people have changed but the meeting format remains the same. HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY FIRST BECOME INVOLVED WITH TOASTMASTERS? I personally became involved with Toastmasters with the goal of improving my presentation skills. I decided to find a local club and am fortunate to work at a company that supports leadership development and our club by

providing us a meeting room for our weekly meetings and financial support to cover membership dues. Our club is open to the public and anyone can attend. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITHIN THE CLUB? I am currently the president of Toastmasters at Cymer. My duties include fulfilling the mission of Toastmasters club, presiding at weekly meetings, attending monthly officer meetings, encouraging participation of current members, and recognizing member achievements. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING IN CYMER TOASTMASTERS? The most rewarding part of Toastmasters is the increased confidence and ability of the members to deliver presentations

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY BEHIND DYNAMIC SPEAKERS? Dynamic Speakers Club #457 was founded in 1953 for employees of General Dynamics. As the company has evolved over the years, Dynamic Speakers has continued to follow and support the employees, now with BAE Systems, as well as those in the community. HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY FIRST BECOME INVOLVED WITH DYNAMIC SPEAKERS? Public speaking terrified me

and I lacked self-confidence. When I saw Toastmasters flyers at work I became interested. It took a lot of self-talk to get myself to go, but it helped that the meeting was in a conference room just a few steps from my office. Members encouraged me and mentored me from the start. Once I started attending regularly I noticed that I was not just improving but I was actually looking forward to the meetings. That was in 1996 and I’ve been involved ever since.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE OTHER CURRENT OFFICERS, AND ANY OTHER KEY PLAYERS IN THE CLUB? A few of the positions that play a major role in the success of a club include vice president of education, secretary, and sergeant at arms. The vice president of education presents a short educational tip at every meeting on a range of topics with the goal of providing our members an area to focus on that will improve future speeches. The sergeant at arms is responsible for setting up the materials required and calling the meeting to order. Our secretary ensures that all of the proper materials are available to the members and new guests. WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS FOR THE CLUB? Membership is open to the public and we’re looking forward to seeing you at the next meeting. Public speaking is one of the biggest fears that people have. Toastmasters has designed a concise process to help individuals overcome their communication phobias. It may seem hard to attend a weekly meeting with busy schedules, but we have seen people with poor communication skills improve tremendously and seasoned communicators advance beyond their skill level. Q&A with

PredOrators Vice President of Membership

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY BEHIND PREDORATORS?

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITHIN THE CLUB?

A sister club in Poway sent an invitation out to have people attend meetings. It was a bit far from Rancho Bernardo, so the local interest was generated and the club chartering process ensued. PredOrators chartered on July 17, 2012. Since that time we have extended membership to include people from local businesses and have achieved club distinction for our accomplishments.

I am the vice president of membership for The PredOrators Toastmasters Club in Rancho Bernardo. I work tightly with our VP of public relations, Thom MacFarlane. He is our point man to bring attention to our club and it is my role to take some of that interest and hopefully guide it into active membership. I also foster a mentoring program here at the club. Talking is not easy for many of us, but we can learn to speak well, naturally, and with enjoyment and satisfaction.

HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY FIRST BECOME INVOLVED WITH PREDORATORS? Originally I became involved with PredOrators at the urging of my manager who had been a part of it and thought I could benefit. It wasn’t at the top of my list of things I thought I’d prefer to do but I went and was immediately drawn in by the welcoming, inspiring members – I realized then that I wanted to be a part of this opportunity for personal and professional growth.

of people and I learn from each one. Toastmasters is a self-paced program in that you are encouraged to meet up against the limits of your comfort zone with lots of encouragement and pointers. As you successfully achieve one milestone, members’ successes are celebrated and they’re encouraged to take the next steps.

Joshua Hardin, Charter member and current VP of Education, is finishing up his senior year at SDSU in Mechanical Engineering along with being an Arnold Air Society cadet in AFROTC. He has been able to practice briefings and other presentations in weekly meetings, using the evaluation feedback to hone his skills.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE OTHER CURRENT OFFICERS, AND ANY OTHER KEY PLAYERS IN THE CLUB?

Hong Xiong, current sergeant-atarms, and GQ Liu, Charter member and current co-president, are members who keep Toastmasters in the family. Hong and GQ are husband and wife who have been enthusiastic in their participation, taking on many leadership roles.

Founder and Immediate Past President Diana Hagerty has been a Toastmaster since 2003. She was inspired to establish this club as a way of developing leadership skills that make a difference for others. Her current goal is to achieve the top Distinguished Toastmaster award in the next year.

a genuinely supportive and nurturing atmosphere.

Like No Other Toastmasters was chartered in September of 2005, primarily led by the Sony Electronics Marketing Department. The name was based on a marketing slogan, “Sony, Like No Other,” and the main focus was giving marketing presentations and honing communication skills. Over the years the club has expanded to support the information systems, engineering, accounting, and service departments and now the leadership aspect of Toastmasters is as important as communication. In 2014 we changed our name to Sony San Diego Toastmasters to reflect the change in the focus of the club away from only marketing to all departments within Sony companies in San Diego. In 2015 the club reached the President’s distinguished designation for the first time, reaching 9 out of 10 goals during the term, and is currently stronger than ever.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITHIN THE CLUB?

Each week the Toastmaster for the day picks a meeting theme which the Grammarian and Topics Master use as a springboard for their Word of the Day and Table Topics. We then enjoy speeches from club members working on specific projects from their Toastmaster manuals. Next is the impromptu speaking portion called Table Topics. The end of the meeting is for evaluations of speeches as well as an evaluation of the meeting itself. For variety we also have meetings centered on topics such as ‘The Moments of Truth,’ potluck celebrations, guest speakers, and speech contests. Our meetings are fun as well as educational.

WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS FOR THE CLUB? Last year we achieved the President’s Distinguished Club status and are striving to maintain this honor in the next term. The

requirements include increasing membership and active member participation by completing speaking and leadership exercises in the manuals. Officers are also required to complete training provided by the District. Above all our club seeks to provide a meaningful and enriching experience to its members. We recognize that competent communication is key not only at work but in all aspects of life. Billy shared that the Nighthawks are always open to moms, dads, and other community members who want to lend a hand. “Del Norte Youth has some great coaches who are extremely selfless. The energy they have, the passion, and mostly the dedication,” said Billy. “One coach drives 30 to 40 minutes and he doesn’t even have a son in the program – pretty awesome!” Billy’s Green Valley neighborhood reminds him of his Nashville roots, with the country feel and

Get the Facts about the Flu

by MARK SHALAUTA, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

As the weather cools, football fans rejoice and families look forward to holidays – and no one wants the flu to slow them down. If knowledge is power then the following flu facts should help you prevent this annual affliction from foiling your fall and winter fun. Can you get the flu from the vaccine? No, the flu vaccine, which generally includes three to four flu strains and covers the likely types of influenza A and B, can’t give you the flu. The flu shot contains dead viruses or no viruses, so you can’t catch the flu from getting one. You might have aches or a low fever, or your arm might hurt, but these side effects are generally mild. While the nasal spray flu vaccine does contain live viruses, they are weakened and cannot cause the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). How does the flu spread? The flu spreads through respiratory droplets. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough so any droplets with flu fluids are not spread through the air. It’s best if you can sneeze into a tissue or paper towel, but if you don’t have those handy sneeze into the crook of your elbow and wash your clothes before wearing them again. Don’t sneeze into your hands because the virus will be transferred to any surface you touch, such as a door knob. To avoid flying droplets from others, put your arm over your face and turn away.

How far should I stand from someone with the flu? If they are coughing or sneezing, try to keep your distance from someone who is suffering from the flu. Infectious flu-containing particles can travel at least six feet. I think I had the flu. Should I still get vaccinated? Yes, even if you think you have had the flu already, get your flu shot. Unless you were tested for the flu virus, you may not have had the flu, and even if you were diagnosed with the flu, you had one strain of the virus. The vaccine protects against several strains of the virus, so getting vaccinated lowers your risk of getting sick from other strains. Where did the name originate? Influenza earned its name from an Italian folk word that attributed colds, coughs, and fever to the influence of the stars. How long can the virus last? The influenza virus generally can survive on surfaces such as doorknobs or books between two and eight hours, according to the CDC. When is flu season? In the United States flu season occurs in the fall and winter, with seasonal flu activity peaking in January or February. However, flu outbreaks can occur as early as October and as late as May. Where do I get immunized? Usually your primary care doctor’s office will offer flu shots and clinics, and many pharmacies also offer the vaccine for a fee. Check with your health plan about any cost to you and your family. Many health plans cover the flu shot as it is considered preventive care. 

:::: HOME TIPS

Putting a Freeze on Holiday Fire Hazards

by SHYANNE LOPEZ

ith the holiday season quickly approaching, many are making preparations for the feasts, gatherings, and fun to be had. But don’t let the festivities let you forget that, according to the United States Fire Administration, the holiday season also means an increase of house ires. Therefore, in the midst of gearing up for the colder season it’s important not to forget some crucial steps to keep your home safe. To help prevent ire hazards we’ve compiled some guidelines that will help you keep your home and loved ones cozy, cheerful, and warm – but not too warm.

Keepin’ it Cool in the Kitchen

Because cooking is the leading cause of fires in the U.S., it’s important to take extra precautions this time of year, whether it’s the Thanksgiving feast or a traditional family meal. First and foremost, never leave your kitchen or home unattended while cooking. Check on your cooking frequently and be aware of what appliances are turned on. When children are in the kitchen, keep them away from hot food and liquids, as a splash from gravy or grease can cause serious burns. Consider keeping a fire extinguisher handy just in case and, if necessary, keep in mind that flour and baking soda can snuff out a grease fire while water can’t.

Careful with those Candles

No matter the holiday, it seems as if candles are universally loved during the winter months. They bring a sense of coziness to a room, but also pose some risks if not carefully attended to. Make sure to always blow out candles before leaving your home or before you fall asleep. In fact, it’s best to avoid using candles in the bedroom or somewhere you are likely to fall asleep. When placing your candles, choose a sturdy candle holder and place away from any curtains, blankets, paper, or plants. And of course, make sure your home’s fire detectors are working correctly.

Electricity and Wiring

As the months get colder, the houses get brighter. Before stringing up those twinkling lights, keep a couple things in mind. In older homes, electrical safety is important because most of them weren’t wired to withstand today’s electrical load limits. Avoid plugging too many items into an electrical socket, and don’t string together more than three strands of lights. Make sure you purchase holiday lights that have been tested for safety by an independent laboratory. Also, don’t hang indoor lights outside – or vice versa. Lastly, inspect your lights to make sure they are in good condition. This means checking for exposed wires or shattered bulbs, which should be replaced.

60 • 92127Magazine.com • November | December 2015

Don’t Forget that Tree!

In our warm Southern California climate, those who have a Christmas tree in their home should regularly check water levels. A dry tree is especially susceptible to catching fire. When first purchasing your tree, choose one with fresh green needles. Before placing the trunk into its stand, prevent your tree from drying out early by cutting two inches from the base of the trunk. Make sure to place your tree at least three feet from any source of heat such as a fireplace, lamp, or radiator, and avoid keeping your tree lights lit when you’re asleep, as most fires occur overnight. Once holiday festivities have come to a close, dispose of your tree sooner rather than later to avoid letting it dry out.

Space Heater Set-Up

While it might be hard for visitors to believe, San Diego actually can get a little chilly during winter. During these times, many choose to use space heaters rather than a furnace because it is less expensive – especially in larger homes. If you use a space heater, make sure it has been professionally tested for safety. Set up the heater so that there is nothing surounding it such as curtains or furniture that can catch fire. Always turn off the space heater before falling asleep, simply allow it to warm up your room. Because heaters require a lot of electricity, make sure it is plugged into its own outlet and not an extension chord.

Momsmakingsixfigures by HEIDI BARTOLOTTA

W

hen I started Momsmakingsixfigures.com in 2008, we had two little girls under the age of five and I was struggling. My challenge was trying to find the right mix of time and finances amidst all the demands that come with motherhood. Should I work outside of the home or decide to stay home, and what would that mean for my family’s financial situation? Mothers today face so many pressures and questions, and the pressure to make the best decision weighs heavily on each of us. That’s where Momsmakingsixfigures can come in; we have a business model that has helped many women find their personal balance-point. Some women work 10 hours per week, some work 40, but each one gets to decide the amount of time that works for her and, more importantly, when during each day she puts in that time. This is not a “get rich quick” thing, simply real women working together to create real income from real effort. If you or anyone you know are looking for something more, something different, we might be what you are looking for.

Jennifer

I have the life I never dreamed possible when I was working for HSBC Bank. Flexibility with five children is a necessity.

As a surgeon, I never owned my schedule but I owned lots of overhead, which meant I worked many holidays instead of spending them with my family. Over the last two years I have spent every holiday with my family thanks to MMSF.

I love working, but I want my family to be the priority. This company has let me, not a corporation, dictate my schedule.

Coming from the corporate arena with lots of work-related travel definitely did not give me the ability to make my two daughters my priority. Now I volunteer in the classroom, chaperone field trips, and still have income – the best of both worlds.

very choice we make has an environmental impact, so wouldn’t it be nice to know that when we take our car to get professionally washed, we aren’t wasting water but instead helping to conserve it? Soapy Joe’s Car Wash has made a commitment to do just that. The business is part of the WaterSavers program of the International Carwash Association and has pledged to implement environmentally conscious standards and practices. “Since day one, we’ve used recycling, filtration, and state-of-the-art technology to deliver the most eco-friendly and professional wash,” explained Roy Stevenson, Soapy Joe’s Operations Manager. “Our goal is to make Soapy Joe’s a positive agent of change in the industry. Our customers can enjoy high-quality service with the knowledge that their carwash isn’t causing excess waste.” In addition to its commitment to the environment, Soapy Joe’s is dedicated to its customers. “Our business is built around the customers’ needs,” said Stevenson. “We spend a lot of time listening and

paying attention to our customers – not our competition.” With customers’ savings in mind, all seven San Diego Soapy Joe’s locations offer loads of deals. “We have a gas station and give a discount on gas when you purchase a car wash,” explained Stevenson. “We have happy hour discounts from 6 to 8 p.m. Save up to $4 on our top wash, free car wash on your birthdays, buy a wash today and get a second wash the same day for 50% off, and we run seasonal buy one get one free promotions.” Soapy Joe’s also offers free car washes to veterans on Veterans Day. “If your car is not clean we will wash it again!” Stevenson added. Soapy Joe’s was started in 1996 by two brothers, “who wanted to change the car wash industry model and service in San Diego,” explained Stevenson. With a goal to deliver a car wash service with a no-pressure sales model, the business was designed to ensure customer satisfaction, offering convenient hours (open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), affordable prices (washes start at $6 and memberships start at $15 per month), and four levels of car wash services in hopes that every customer find their perfect fit.

“Our goal is to make Soapy Joe’s a positive agent of change in the industry.”

Today, the business has upheld its promise to customers and is proud of its pledge to remain environmentally responsible. “Green carwashes are just one of the ways communities can make a difference to protect the environment,” noted Stevenson. “We can’t save the environment alone, but we certainly can do our part to make sure our operations don’t contribute to the compounding issue of water waste.” 

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters Our Stratified Market

by SCOTT VOAK

S

peak to two agents who work the North County Inland Corridor (Poway Unified School District, Scripps Ranch, and Mira Mesa) and you’re likely to get two different opinions on what the market is doing. Speak with three and you’re likely to get confused. Don’t blame them – the housing data coming out of the third quarter was definitely confusing if taken at face value. For example: The average and median sales prices were both down year over year yet the price per square foot was up over the same period. This held over all types and sizes of homes. The average price was down despite sales being up and inventory being down. Lower supply and higher demand should equal higher, not lower, prices (or I wasted my MBA). While confusing on the surface, once you break down the market and look at the causes, it makes a lot of sense. Basically, our market has become very stratified. Here are a couple of examples: • Under $500k, sales were up 16% while active listings were down 51.4%, and new listings were down 29.3%. • Above $1.2M, sales were down 4.5%, active listings were up 9%, and new listings were up 8.9%. • Between $800k and $1.2M, we saw unusual activity: Sales down more than any other price range (-9.1%) and new listings up more than any other price range (+18.8%). There is not space to go into a complete explanation (if you get my Monday Morning Coffee or monthly market updates, you have seen it – email me and I will include you in those pieces), but here is the quick

explanation: Affordable housing is disappearing in our area, especially if you live in PUSD. In the middle range of our market ($600k – $1.2M), tech layoffs are having an effect both actually and psychologically. At the high end, employment issues are not as important as the overall business climate and investment markets. The volatility in the stock market plus drops in oil (Canadian, Middle Eastern and Russian buyers) and the drop in the Asian stock markets have had an effect. The question is, how should this information influence your plans? 

:::: NIGHTHAWK INSIDER

by AMELIA CECCHETTO special to 92127 Magazine

Soaring Around the Globe

D

el Norte has a thriving atmosphere of global awareness and diversity, and the Nighthawk family is one that stretches its wings across the globe. Hannah Elarabawy, a senior at Del Norte, moved from Cairo, Egypt when she was 13 years old. This chatty and outgoing girl will talk to anyone interested in learning about her homeland “There was a revolution going on in Egypt when I first moved here, so I was able to answer a lot of questions about the reality of life there, which was not living in a pyramid and riding camels everywhere,” she said with a laugh. Dispelling these seemingly silly assumptions has helped her to spread her culture and

unique background around campus. One of the biggest differences in schooling for her is the diversity Del Norte has on campus, “In Cairo, there were not a lot of differences between students. There was maybe one student from another country. At Del Norte, you see so many different cultures and races represented, even at one classroom table.” Another student who has made the Del Norte campus even more special is Carolin Koehler, an exchange student from Germany, spending the 2015-2016 school year at Del Norte. Carolin is already well connected on the campus; she’s made new friends, attended football games, and even joined the cheer team. She answers lots of questions about life in Germany. The most frequently asked question is, “What food do you eat there?” “Lots of potatoes,” she said.

70 • 92127Magazine.com • November | December 2015

“It’s funny, but that’s really the most common food we eat!” We have all temporarily landed in the Nighthawk nest, whether from across the street or across the globe. These global influences better equip us to soar to new heights in the interconnected world that awaits us. Hannah’s own global awareness has expanded as well, “Just as people had incorrect assumptions about life in Egypt, I had grown up with equally incorrect impressions of American, Indian, and Asian cultures, which I was able to learn about and correct myself on at Del Norte.” 

Amelia Cecchetto is a senior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine.
