Introducing Everything Homez Magazine

Publisher Derrick Breaux

I

ZCOD E MAGA ZINE’ S

t would be nearly impossible for me to say how many times people ask me if I know of a good contractor. A good painter. A solar company to call for an estimate. A handyman. A flooring company. A plumber. The list goes on and on. Everyone that knows me understands that I like to build stuff – or have stuff built for me when possible. As a kid growing up in EVERYTHING Texas, that’s just what people did. If a family HOMEZ MAGAZINE member needed to add a room onto their house, the entire family got together for a couple of months in the afternoons after their day jobs and built the room addition. I grew up thinking that everyone knew how to build stuff. It wasn’t until I moved out to Southern California as a teenager that I realized that this wasn’t the “norm” everywhere. When I talked to people about my experience helping to install a roof on my uncle’s house as a young teenager, I think most people thought I was making it up. For the past couple of years, I have been talking to 92127 Magazine readers about this issue. Everyone seemed to agree that it is often difficult to find reliable contractors, home-related products, and Derrick Breaux similar services. The general consensus was that it would be extremely Publisher convenient to have a section within the pages of this magazine that focused specifically on the home. So, today I am proud to officially introduce to you Everything Homez Magazine – a magazine within the pages of 92127 Magazine (see page 77). The goal of Everything Homez is to provide you with information on all types of products and services related to the home improvement industry. The Everything Homez section will be in every issue moving forward. You can expect to see the number of pages grow as businesses that fall within the “homez” category commit to participating – it is destined to become the ultimate ‘go-to’ resource for home improvement. Our ZCode Media team will be working diligently to seek out additional businesses in all subcategories of Everything Homez. However, if you know of a great company that fits in this category that you would like to refer, please send them our way. It’s always good to work with companies that come highly recommended by you! If you have a home improvement project in the works, please check out Everything Homez to see if there is a local company that can assist. GUID E TO EVER YTHIN G

rene Hou, a 4S Ranch resident and sophomore at Del Norte High School, has earned many writing awards over the past four years. It all began in 2012 when she won the Award of Excellence through the Palomar Council PTA for a poem she wrote titled “Diversity Is…” The following year she won the same award for a different poem, titled “A Butterfly from Heaven.” Then in 2014 she won an Award of Merit for her poem “Believe, Dream, Inspire.” By January of 2015, Irene took her writing one step further by self-publishing her own book, titled Snowspirit: The Virgo Key, under her pseudonym, Rainye Day. By May of 2015, Irene’s book Name: School: Grade: Parents: Sibling: Favorite Place in 92127:

was bestowed the Bronze Award in the Fantasy/Science-Fiction category by the National eLit Awards, a global awards program that honors the best of digital publishing entertainment. Recalling the process of writing her book, Irene shared, “It took a toll on my social life, my family, and school. Occasionally, I envied the carefree life of my pals. Many times, I had to abandon plans with friends in order to work on this project. But I still continued to write.” Snowspirit: The Virgo Key features a character whom Irene originally wrote about for a first grade writing assignment. Irene’s dad found the story so engaging that he encouraged Irene to keep poking around with it. By the time Irene got to middle school, she admitted, “My life revolved around Snowspirit! I spent hours researching and revising the story, and edited over 50 drafts of it before getting to the final product.” In addition to being an author, Irene also does Taekwondo (she’s a black belt), plays the piano (she placed first in the San Diego Sonata Competition), is an avid PC gamer (she’s learning 3D animation and Java), and loves to read. Irene volunteers at martial art tournaments and children’s camps, and she recently lectured at Monterey Ridge Elementary, encouraging the students to try to publish their own books. At school Irene’s favorite subject is English, because “I prefer to express myself openly, instead of sticking to one right answer like in math and science.” In the future, Irene sees herself dabbling in screenwriting and computer science. She added, “My biggest dream is to change the world and make an impact with my writing.” Visit www.rainyeday.com to read some of Irene’s imaginative writing samples. 

GONE GOLFING Golf is the Lamkin Family’s Business, But Being Together on the Green Brings Them Closer by LYDIA COBB | photo by Tyler McElhaney

Name: Profession: Community: Interests:

Favorite Local Spots:

Bob Lamkin President and CEO of Lamkin Grips Santaluz since 2006 Golf, Chicago Blackhawks, fundraising and volunteering for Wounded Warriors and other charities (education and cancer research) Santaluz Country Club, San Diego Country Club

22 • 92127Magazine.com • January | February 2016

ob Lamkin has lived in San Diego’s diverse neighborhoods for 30 years, from Coronado to Carmel Valley. His family business had relocated here from Chicago, where he was raised. When he found Santaluz, Bob explained, “It had everything we were looking for: a great community, an incredible golf club, and excellent schools for our children.” He and his wife have four kids. “In their own unique way,” related Bob, “each of them is achieving their goals and growing into a remarkable adult.” He also cherishes visits with his three young grandchildren. “When the entire family is assembled, we love spending time at Santaluz Country Club,” he shared. “Of course my wife, Michelle, is the critical success factor in keeping our family machine running smoothly.” He majored in Criminal Justice at Benedictine College in Kansas. After college his ambition was to become a police officer. But his father needed help in the family business that produced grips for golf clubs. In 1987 Bob went to work with the sales, marketing, engineering, and manufacturing teams in the Lamkin Grips family tradition. It all started with his grandfather Elver Lamkin, who worked for a Chicago tannery. The sporting goods brand Wilson approached the tannery with a request for leather golf club grips. The tannery passed, but Elver manufactured those first leather grips from his garage (now made with patented high performance synthetics). Business was born. Bob shared, “In 2000 I stepped into the role of CEO and president and I’m proud to be the third generation Lamkin to run this great company.” San Diego’s business climate is suggestive of a generous community, according to Bob. “I’m always struck by how often and how significantly business leaders step up to support various charitable causes and community enrichment programs,” he added. Volunteering and fundraising are important endeavors with Bob’s family. They support Wounded Warriors, local food banks, and cancer research and education. “I sometimes wonder what my life would have been like as a police officer,” mentioned Bob, “But I know that even working in law enforcement, I would probably still be addicted to golf!” Family time is important, and they play golf together when schedules allow. Bob reflected that they’re all busy people, but nothing is better than quality time with his loved ones. This gives him a firm grip on life. 

my future is inspired! I can take a class, go golfing or to the symphony, go on a hike or try something new. And with maintenance-free living now, and even more interesting choices coming, I have the time to create the kind of future that inspires me.

26th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon RB COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GIVES $70,578 TO LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS photo by LARRY MCINTYRE

A

t the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation’s (RBCF) 26th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, the foundation awarded $70,578 to 19 local nonprofits, with special focuses on education, health and safety, and the arts. The largest grant was $8,978 to The Continuing Education Center (CEC) at Rancho Bernardo, to be used for equipment and marketing. The CEC is a nonprofit organization providing noncredit college level classes for Rancho Bernardo residents. Class fees are only $7 per session. The Turtleback Education Foundation and Highland Ranch Educational Foundation each received $7,500 to be put towards learning program equipment. Beyond the grant announcements, the luncheon was a great opportunity to kick back, relax, and enjoy the tremendous camaraderie of the Rancho Bernardo community. The event at the Rancho Bernardo Inn began with a social hour during which attendees mixed, mingled, and browsed the offerings at the

silent auction and raffle table. Auction items and opportunity drawing prizes included meals at favorite local restaurants, dinner with the firefighters of Fire Station No. 33, a day out sailing, and an overnight stay at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The Dolans Found Home Again in Their Native San Diego by LYDIA COBB | photos by Spark Photography

NURTURING THEIR ROOTS

A

t 10 years of age, Daniel Dolan keeps his own blog. He’s like his dad and loves computers. His younger brothers, Colin and Gavin, have distinct personalities as fraternal twins: Gavin is shy and loves drawing, while Colin is more extroverted. Colin’s nickname is “Peanut” even though Gavin is allergic to peanuts. “Colin also loves to dance and has been known to take over the entire dance floor at weddings,” shared Karina Dolan. The Dolans moved from the Talmadge area in 2006 to Patina, one of the oldest communities in 4S Ranch. “We’re both native San Diegans and wanted to stay close to extended family,” mentioned Karina. “We found 4S Ranch the perfect place to raise our family.”

Brian Dolan attended West Hills High School in East County. Karina grew up in Tierrasanta and attended University of San Diego High School (now Cathedral High). They met at Grossmont College and have been together for 20 years. Karina is a Registered Nurse at UCSD Women’s Health Services part-time and volunteers in the boys’ classrooms at Stone Ranch Elementary. Brian has a B.S. in Information Systems and owns Trusted Solutions Group, an IT consulting firm specializing in computer security. “With three active boys, our lives are centered around extracurricular activities,” added Karina. Parents included – Brian volunteers on the school’s foundation board and is the president of 4S Ranch Little League’s board for the last two years. Brian’s work involves some travel, which Karina enjoys when she gets to accompany him. Life at home is all about flexibility, curiosity, and supporting one another’s pursuits and shared dreams. Daniel swims and is an avid reader. He’s involved in the school’s student council and Trailblazer television. Gavin and Colin both love sports and play baseball, soccer and basketball. Brian likes to cook and play golf, and Karina dives into arts and crafts when time allows. When the boys grow up, each one has an idea of their aspiring career paths. Daniel wants to be a computer programmer. Colin dreams of playing professional baseball. And while Gavin is also allergic to dogs and cats, his heart is set on becoming a veterinarian. While each son advances through elementary school, the Dolans look forward to more years together with diverse and shared interests. These are lively times, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. 

:::: FROM THE DENTIST

TOOTH-HEALTHY FOOD DECISIONS Soft drink consumption has increased dramatically in recent decades. They’ve become a daily habit for a growing number of people, especially kids. A steady diet of soft drinks is a leading cause of tooth decay, enamel erosion, and obesity. They may even increase the risk of developing diabetes. Soft drinks contain a large amount of sugar, which causes tooth decay by producing acid when it comes in contact with the mouth’s natural bacteria. This acid dissolves tooth enamel, eventually causing cavities. But why are soft drinks so much worse than many other snacks? A single 12 ounce can of soda contains up to 12 teaspoons of sugar! A Big Gulp can contain 63 teaspoons of sugar! Adding to the problem is that these large drinks are usually consumed over an extended period of time, prolonging the acid attack on the teeth. The acid attack lasts about 20 minutes, and starts over with every sip. If you have a receding gum line,

this acid can damage the roots of the teeth. This is particularly a concern for adults. Even diet or sugar free soft drinks can raise havoc with the teeth. While they don’t contain sugar for the bacteria to use to produce acid, they do contain their own acid which is added to enhance the flavor of the drink. This acid can damage the tooth enamel almost to the same extent as the sugared drinks.

How can you reduce decay? • Drink soft drinks in moderation. • Don’t sip for extended periods of time. Ongoing sipping prolongs sugar and acid attacks on the teeth. • Do not drink soft drinks immediately before bedtime because the liquid pools in the mouth and coats the teeth with sugar and acid. Teeth are particularly susceptible to acid attack when you are asleep and there is little saliva flow.

DR. CHRIS PHAM • Drink water instead of sugared drinks. It has no sugar, no acid, and no calories. • Get regular checkups and cleanings to remove bacteria buildup (plaque) and calculus (tartar). Remember to floss.

Vocabulary Virtuoso LOCAL TUTOR AND STUDENT COLLABORATE ON ENTERTAINING VOCABULARY WORKBOOK

T

wo local residents recently collaborated to create Vocabulary Virtuoso: Mastering Middle School Vocabulary, which is now available as a paperback workbook or as an eBook from The Critical Thinking Company. The book includes 15 lessons, each with a list of 12 words from PSAT vocabulary lists. Retired teacher, tutor, and 92128 resident Nancy Forderer wrote the book, which takes an entertaining approach to teaching vocabulary. The stories and sample sentences follow a fictional group of students through their daily academic routines. “As a tutor, I continually searched for a vocabulary book that would engage my students with a sense of fun as well as being a learning tool,” said Nancy. “Because I could never find the perfect book, I decided to create my own book. I did and used it with the students I tutored, and they approved wholeheartedly.” Kseniya Belysheva was one of Nancy’s students who loved the book. She agreed to illustrate the book after completing many of the lessons. “I was so impressed with her charming drawings that I contacted The Critical Thinking Company to inquire about the possibility of using Kseniya’s illustrations,” said Nancy. “When they saw them, they agreed.” Kseniya is a 92127 resident and a student at Del Norte High School who loves art, reading, and writing. She aims to become a lawyer. Nancy taught high school and middle school for 25 years in Ohio and Michigan, and began tutoring when she retired to San Diego. She enjoys writing, reading, tutoring, and being close to her children and grandchildren. Find Vocabulary Virtuoso at www.criticalthinking.com. 

Resolutions for a Healthier You at Any Age by YENNY LIM, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

Check out these effective strategies for boosting your brain and body so you stay stronger and smarter longer. While growing older affects nearly every part of you, aging well doesn’t have to be an oxymoron. Eat a balanced diet that emphasizes whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables and limits sugar, saturated fat, and alcohol. The National Institutes on Aging recommends 1.5 to 2.5 cups of fruit, two to 3.5 cups of vegetables, five to six ounces of grains, five to seven ounces of protein, three cups of fat-free or low-fat milk or the equivalent, and five to eight teaspoons of oil daily for individuals over 50. Keep moving. Regular aerobic exercise, the kind that gets your heart pumping, strengthens both your body and your brain. As we age, the hippocampus – the brain region that plays a vital role in verbal memory and learning – shrinks, leading to memory impairment. The good news is that cardio exercise appears to boost the size of the

hippocampus. Standard recommendations advise 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week, which could be walking, swimming, or tennis. If raking leaves or cleaning house makes you break out in a light sweat, that counts as moderate activity. However, be careful not to overstress your body and joints and consult your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

beyond what is easy. Try learning a new language, studying a new area of interest such as art history or botany, or taking up a hobby such as knitting or chess.

Take dance lessons. A 21-year study of individuals 75 and older found that frequent dancing was one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy and help prevent Alzheimer’s, dementia, and memory loss. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the 2003 study was funded by the National Institute on Aging.

Get enough sleep. Not sleeping enough may lead to a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes as well as impaired memory. The ideal amount varies per person, but make sure you feel well-rested in the morning.

Have music in your life. Playing an instrument can help strengthen memory, verbal fluency, problem-solving abilities, and how you process information, while listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory, according to researchers at John Hopkins. Learn new skills. The activities that have the most impact on your brain health are those that stretch you, requiring you to work

Forget multitasking. Doing one thing at a time, not everything at once, strengthens higher-order reasoning and the ability to understand and apply new information.

Establish a relationship with your primary care provider. Whether you see an internal medicine or family medicine doctor, it’s important to have a primary care physician who can help you stay healthy with preventive measures and regain health during an illness. 

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Abnormal Beer Company Expands

Dr. Marisa Joins CMDC

Debbie Kurth Day

Amazon’s Prime Now Launches Locally

Rancho Bernardo-based Abnormal Beer Company announced an exciting $1 million expansion investment to expand their brewing facility and create a private event space. The expansion will increase the company’s fermentation capacity, which will grow from 80 to 440 barrels, and add 2,000 square feet to the 5,000-square-foot facility. New hot liquor and cold liquor tanks will increase the rate of production, and a new barrel aging program will allow sour and spirit barrel maturation. “After only six months of brewing, we are excited to expand our presence in San Diego’s thriving craft beer scene,” said Co-Founder Elvin Lai. “We look forward to the opportunity to explore and create new styles as well as distribute our beers to a wider spectrum of local beer drinkers.” The expansion’s completion is anticipated for fall 2016, and Abnormal Beer Company will remain open throughout the process – as will Abnormal Wine Company and The Cork & Craft Restaurant, also housed in the same building.

Rancho Bernardo Resident and 2014-2015 RB Honorary Mayor was recently honored with proclamations for her volunteerism and contributions to the community over the years. County Supervisor Dave Roberts presented her with a proclamation declaring Nov. 17, 2015 as Debbie Kurth Day in the County of San Diego. State Legislator Brian Maienschein gave her a similar proclamation naming Nov. 17, 2015 as Debbie Kurth Day throughout the State of California. Rounding out the series of presentations, Rancho Bernardo Business Association Board Member Marty Judge stepped in on behalf of Congressman Scott Peters to present the proclamation declaring the same date to be Debbie Kurth Day in the United States. A Wisconsin native, Debbie moved to Rancho Bernardo in 1989. She is treasurer for the RBBA and a board member for the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, among other community commitments. Within the RBBA, she chairs or co-chairs the Door Prizes, Ribbon Cutting, Savour RB, Welcome, and Honorary Mayor committees.

Campus Groundbreaking Ceremony

Maranatha Christian Schools recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a groundbreaking ceremony on campus. The ceremony kicked off the first phase of a multi-year development plan, including a new high school building. The strategic plan was formulated last year through collaboration between faculty, staff, parents, students, and chapel leadership. Construction on the new high school building is scheduled to begin early this year and be completed by July 2016. It’s planned to house classrooms, two dedicated science labs, studio and digital art spaces, a teacher’s lounge, a student center, and more. Hundreds of students, parents, staff members, and other community members were in attendance, as was Pastor Ray Bentley, who founded the school. Councilman Mark Kersey attended to present a proclamation to Superintendent Jess Hetherington declaring that Nov. 18, 2015 is officially Maranatha Schools Day.

Carmel Mountain Dental Care (CMDC) recently welcomed Dr. Marisa Lee, D.M.D., to their growing team. To avoid confusion between herself and fellow CMDC dentist Dr. H. Jonathan Lee, D.M.D. – no relation – she goes by Dr. Marisa. Born in Hawaii, Dr. Marisa was drawn towards dentistry from an early age. Sports-related injuries and poor eating habits resulted in a significant amount of dental care as a teenager, and she was inspired by her dentists’ patient, nonjudgmental care. “I personally understand the anxiety, discomfort, and pain patients experience with dentistry because I too was once a patient terrified of going to the dentist,” shared Dr. Marisa. “It is a blessing and a privilege to help each patient obtain a healthy, beautiful smile they love through empathetic and genuine dental care.” Dr. Marisa is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Society, Christian Medical and Dental Association, and San Diego County Dental Society.

As of Jan. 1, applications are open for the 2016-2017 RB Honorary Mayor campaign. The campaign is the Rancho Bernardo Business Association’s (RBBA) largest yearly fundraising opportunity. Candidates will spend June through October of this year selling votes – a portion of the proceeds from each $5 vote will go towards nonprofit organizations within the community. Past campaigns have benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego, Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, and Rancho Bernardo Historical Society. At the end of the campaign season, the candidate who has sold the most votes is inaugurated in November. The first runner-up will become deputy mayor. Over the course of their term, the honorary mayor presides over local events like ribbon cuttings, Savour RB, and the annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting. Interested community members should contact Joyce at 858-451-3406 or joyce@rbbaconnect.com to learn more by March 1. Candidates must be at least 21 years old, members of the RBBA, and live or work in Rancho Bernardo.

Warriors for Healing

Rancho Bernardo Recreation Center and the Warriors for Healing (W4H) Foundation are partnering to offer a free weekly yoga class at the recreation center for veterans, active duty military, and their families. The class will be led by Grace Flores, who has an active duty son. “We want to serve our military community, help them alleviate stress in their lives, and cultivate more resiliencies through the evidence-based science of yoga,” she explained. W4H was founded by San Diego resident and former NBC News war correspondent Brad Willis. Brad shared, “As a former war correspondent that faced traumatic stress after the loss of my career to a broken back and stage IV cancer, my compassion for our military heroes is immense.” He is committed to sharing the healing he found through yoga. The class will be held every Monday from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. For details contact Grace at 619-729-1691 or puragrace@att.net. Learn more at www.warriorsforhealing.org.

7th Annual Father Daughter Social

Maranatha Christian School’s (MCS) 7th Annual Father Daughter Social will be open to fathers and daughters from throughout the community. Whether or not they attend the school, girls of all ages are invited to bring their fathers or father figures – stepfathers, grandfathers, older brothers, and uncles are all welcome! – to enjoy an evening of music, dancing, dessert, and prizes. Last year, over 200 girls attended, and event organizers expect at least as many to turn out this year for a memorable night. The event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 30 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the MCS campus. Tickets are $20 per father or father figure in advance, or $25 at the door. Daughters get in free, no matter how many want to attend. Contact Craig Chambliss at craig.chambliss@gmail.com with any questions about the event. Tickets can be found online at www.maranathachristianschools.org.

Auxiliary Unit Gives Back

The Rancho Bernardo Unit of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary was proud to celebrate its 20th Annual Poinsettia Sale. Every year the RB Unit sells poinsettia plants within the community to support a different program at Rady Children’s Hospital. The fundraiser was spearheaded by Tammy Young and resulted in approximately 1,250 plants sold, all of which were distributed within three days. This year the unit directed proceeds towards the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), which provides the highest level of medical care for sick children. The RB Unit is always open to community members interested in joining or learning more. “Our unit likes to have fun!” said Publicity Chair Marcie Sands. “We are a nice blend of ages and personalities, all with the best care of children at heart. We welcome all levels of involvement.” To learn more contact Membership Chairwoman Paula Fetcho at 858-774-3469 or prfetcho4@gmail.com, or visit www.rcharanchobernardo.com.

1st Annual Hot Cocoa Holiday Event

The Rancho Bernardo Community Council (RBCC) brought local residents together for a successful 1st Annual Hot Cocoa Holiday Event at the Windermere Homes and Estates office. Guests of all ages enjoyed hot cocoa, cookies, coloring, holiday games, and free photo opportunities with Santa Claus – played by County Supervisor Dave Roberts – Chanukah decorations, or elf and dreidel cut-outs. Seacrest Village donated holiday cookies; Peet’s Coffee & Tea donated hot cocoa; Denny’s, Olive Garden, and Marie Calendars donated crayons; and Shaun Wiley and Chris Johnson took photos. Attendees to the free get-together were encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy or game to be donated to the Polinsky Children’s Center. “We wound up with three 36-gallon bags filled to the brim with wonderful toys and games,” shared RBCC President Robin Kaufman. Learn more about the RBCC and upcoming events at www.rbcommunitycouncil.com.

27th Annual Macy’s Museum Month

Museums throughout San Diego are gearing up for another great February with the return of Macy’s Museum Month. It’s a leap year, so San Diegans will have 29 days to delve into over 40 arts, culture, and science destinations at half-off the regular admission price. Last year almost 30,000 people participated in the event, which was founded in 1989 to foster awareness of San Diego’s incredibly varied cultural institutions. From the San Diego Museum of Art to the California Surf Museum to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, there’s something for everyone to explore. “Many of our member museums make February the hallmark for new exhibition launches,” said Theresa Kosen, San Diego Museum Council Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to see such a phenomenal landscape of cultural opportunities for locals and visitors to enjoy.” Participants can find Museum Month passes at any local Macy’s store – each pass is valid for up to four guests. Learn more and find the full directory of participating museums at www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org.

Q&A WITH

DEL NORTE HIGH SCHOOL PTSA PRESIDENT JUDY SIMEROTH

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE DEL NORTE HIGH SCHOOL PTSA? Del Norte PTSA formed when the school opened in 2009-2010. Each Poway Unified school is encouraged to create a PTSA to support the students, teachers, and staff. We continue to grow as our student body grows both in numbers and needs.

AT-A-GLANCE PTSA PRESIDENT JUDY SIMEROTH Name: Judy Simeroth Community: 4S Ranch Education: B.A. Liberal Arts Family: Husband – Jesse; daughter – Jodi; son – Jake Hobbies: Swimming, knitting, hiking

WHAT IS THE OVERALL MISSION OF THE DNHS PTSA? The overall purpose of PTSA is to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FOLLOWING THAT MISSION? Through collaboration with the staff, commitment as a board, understanding the diversity in our school, respect of our volunteers and their contributions, and accountability to our members to achieve our mission statement. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR SCHOOLS TO HAVE PTSAS? We provide programs such as Red Ribbon Week, Reflections, scholarships to seniors, Teacher/Staff Appreciation, Adopt A Family, Mock SAT/PSAT Testing, and Student Services. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE DNHS PTSA, AND WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE? My current role is president. I was asked to serve because I have presidential experience. I was PTA president at Stone Ranch Elementary for two years and remained on the board for the following four years in different board positions. WHAT ARE THE MOST REWARDING AND CHALLENGING ASPECTS OF YOUR ROLE WITH THE PTSA? I have been given the wonderful opportunity to work with caring and responsible board members, and I have been able to connect with many old and new faces in our community. The most challenging aspect is getting the word out to our parents that PTSA matters in high school. Parent participation is

needed and valuable. We have challenges in our school and as an involved parent the best weapon is to be informed. Stay connected and support your PTSAs through the high school years.

experience. It is exciting to watch how the students become leaders when they help with our programs.

WHAT IS MOST EXCITING ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE PTSA?

The Del Norte PTSA Board is filled with fantastic people. Mr. Mizel and his staff are always there to support us when we ask and we support them to the best of our ability.

I enjoy being involved and being included behind the scenes in my child's high school

Q&A WITH

FOUNDATION PRESIDENT JEFF ERWIN

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE DEL NORTE HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION? The DNHS Foundation was formed to help provide our students with whatever resources necessary to assist in their success. Funds for our schools from the state of California have for many years fallen short. For example, several of our departments have a high demand for consumable products. Science and art specifically have items in the classrooms that need to be replaced on a regular basis. In addition, the culture of the school starts at the top and cascades down. We are here to support our great teachers who are setting the tone for learning on a daily basis. No one is too old to be appreciated and when someone feels good about themselves it reflects in their overall performance. Every year we gain a little more momentum as we are able to provide more for the school and become more visible on campus and the neighborhood. We started out very modestly with simple campaigns to raise money for the school. WHAT IS THE OVERALL MISSION OF THE FOUNDATION? Our Foundation's mission statement is: Funding our Future, Supporting our Nighthawks. Today's students are the future of our country and we want to give our Nighthawks a leg up on the competition. HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FOLLOWING THAT MISSION? The Foundation works very closely with our fearless leader and principal Mr. Greg Mizel. I can’t begin to tell you how fortunate the Nighthawk Community is to have such an inspirational leader. His passion for learning and support for his team is unwavering. We very much look to Greg to see where we can be most effective with our gifts to the school. One project was particularly telling to me. We helped to fund an additional counselor whose sole mission was to reach out to those kids who won’t necessarily advocate for themselves. This just confirmed to me that every student is important, not just those who excel. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR SCHOOLS TO HAVE FOUNDATIONS? Historically, a nonprofit foundation helped to

provide nice extras for the schools. This is no longer the case. Unfortunately district funding to schools has been cut short in many ways. It is important to have a Foundation to help fund those programs that are either short in funding or have been completely defunded by the school district. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE DNHS FOUNDATION, AND WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE? I am the president of the Foundation. It seems as if I am the consummate volunteer. My wife and I have a strong belief in being involved in our children’s lives and giving back to the community. We have been involved in youth sports programs in various positions and when it was time for

the kids to move into high school this seemed a natural environment for me to get involved. WHAT ARE THE MOST REWARDING AND CHALLENGING ASPECTS OF YOUR ROLE WITH THE FOUNDATION? In that we are a volunteer organization, it can be difficult to keep everyone focused on our target. Lets face it, we all lead very busy lives. Most people have wonderful intentions but life oftentimes gets in the way. In this position I know that we may not have the participation level needed to provide all that we hope to achieve. But whatever effort we are able to provide certainly will enhance the experience for our children and staff.

WHAT IS MOST EXCITING ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE FOUNDATION? The most exciting part is knowing that we play a small part in making the lives of others better. If we can help provide the tools to make high school a better experience and touch the lives of today's youth in a positive manner, that is exciting. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT SOME OF THE OTHER KEY PLAYERS IN THE FOUNDATION? We are very happy to have Michael Sadegh as our treasurer. Michael just joined the board this year as his daughter Deena was an incoming freshman. Michael is a graduate of San Diego State University and has been exceptional in watching over our finances. Special Events Chair Carol Ware has joined us this year, also with an incoming freshman. Director of Social Media Christine Bilange has been on the board for about four years and has been instrumental in helping with everything. There is nothing that she won’t get involved with. We are also very happy to have Missi Faucher on the board. Missi is our secretary. She took a small sabbatical after graduating her first daughter and then having her daughter Kyra start at Del Norte in 2013. CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT ANY UPCOMING SIGNIFICANT DATES? As of now, the board is leaning towards hosting a gala event in the spring. As soon as we have details we will be reaching out to our parents and the community. DOES THE FOUNDATION HOLD FUNDRAISERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR? Absolutely. We start our planning process about a month before the start of the academic year. Following the planning process, we kick off our first

fundraising campaign during the registration week, followed by our back-to-school night event. We also have a big direct mailer campaign toward the middle of the school year. In addition, the Foundation coordinates email efforts with the school in order to keep the Foundation in the minds of our parent as they can always make an electronic donation at www.dnhsfoundation.org/donate/donate-online.

But in general, we hold meetings the first Monday of every month that are open for anyone to attend. If you are interested in just helping with specific projects you are welcome to go to our website and send us an email. We will absolutely have someone reach out to recruit you!

HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY HELP TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE WORK THAT THE FOUNDATION DOES?

My goal for this fiscal year is to reach our goal of raising $80,000 for the school. I hope that as I step down at the end of the year someone will step up and continue to improve on the path that we have started.

Without our donors we cannot survive, and our parents are the greatest resource and reason for the Foundation's existence. We can never thank them enough for all of their generous donations. In addition, most employers have policies that match employee donations. This matching policy is probably the single most effective way to increase value for any donation. So, I plead to our parents to spread the goals and mission of our Foundation to other parents and their employers so we can flock together and soar. IF SOMEONE WANTS TO HELP THE CAUSE, HOW CAN THEY BE A PART OF THE FOUNDATION? We are always looking for help at the Foundation, and more specifically we need help in the web development area now.

WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM AND SHORTTERM GOALS FOR THE DNHS FOUNDATION?

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST IN REGARDS TO THIS UPCOMING YEAR? The Foundation has been looking for a signature event that we can host annually as our main fundraiser. We were circumvented by fire a couple years ago from holding a golf event and this year we are working hard to identify and actually host our first annual! HOW CAN PEOPLE GO ABOUT FINDING OUT MORE INFORMATION? The school puts out a Month at a Glance calendar which lists our meeting times and dates. For more information you can go to our website or see us on Facebook at DNHS Foundation. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD? We wanted again to publicly thank all of our donor parents, their employers, and local businesses that support the Foundation. We greatly appreciate the awesome hard work of principal Greg Mizel and the rest of the Nighthawk staff, faculty, and volunteers. You are all the reasons for allowing our students to achieve more at school. Thank you. 

Recycling for Tots 4S RANCH GIRL SCOUTS GIVE BACK THROUGH RECYCLING PROJECT

T

wo local Girl Scouts from 4S Ranch recently raised over $400 through recycling for Toys for Tots. Lily McKissen is a seventh grader at Oak Valley Middle School, and Cecelia Hormovitis is a seventh grader at La Jolla Country Day. The girls are longtime friends and teamed up to address two important issues: recycling and local children in need. Lily and Cecelia began by collecting empty bottles and cans from neighbors. After turning in the recyclables, they used the money earned to finance lemonade stands. They also held a garage sale with items donated by neighbors and friends. “It was a lot of work but we were doing it together and had a great time,” the girls shared. “We feel really grateful for all the things we have and want to help families who are not as fortunate as ours.” They were able to use the money raised to purchase toys for Toys for Tots, but Lily and Cecelia decided they weren’t finished there. They began a new phase of their philanthropic campaign in December by reaching out to the community for help gathering more toys. Shay Realtors and St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church hosted Toys for Tots donation boxes on Lily and Cecelia’s behalf. Thanks to the community’s support, they were able to double the number of toys they had collected.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program collects new toys every year to distribute to less fortunate children during the holiday season. Learn more about the San Diego County program at www.san-diego-ca.toysfortots.org. 

Based out of Keller Williams Realty in Carmel Valley, Deanne Motsenbocker Real Estate strives to give all clients a first-class real estate experience and exceed their expectations.

ABOVE AND BEYOND ESCROW Deanne Motsenbocker Real Estate Turns Transactions into Relationships

D

eanne Motsenbocker Real Estate is founded on honest relationships and good communication. “I consider it an honor and privilege to be trusted with what to most people is their largest and most important investment – their home,” said Deanne. She’s proud that her business has grown primarily through client referrals. “People feel they are helping their friends and family by referring them to me when they need a Realtor,” she said. “I believe strongly in treating every client with the special attention they deserve.” That special attention begins from the moment someone starts considering buying or selling a home and reaches out for advice, and lasts beyond the close of escrow. She helps sellers by providing market information, strategies, and staging, and she loves finding just the right home for buyers. Whether clients are searching for their first home, seeking a larger home as their family grows, or downsizing as children

move out, Deanne knows how to listen and learn what is important to people, and has a penchant for helping them achieve their goals. As a Certified Negotiation Expert, she excels at bringing people together and guiding them through a smooth escrow and closing. Afterwards, she’s always available to answer questions about home ownership or provide service referrals. Real estate runs in the family, and Deanne started out with a formidable body of knowledge from day one. “My mother had been a Realtor for 45 years, so I knew firsthand the commitment it takes to have a successful real estate business,” explained Deanne. She combined her understanding of real estate with the experience gathered from other branches of her career. After earning her degree in Journalism and Advertising from University of Oregon, Deanne bought and sold radio and TV advertising in San Diego, honing her business and negotiation skills. She later returned to school to earn a master’s degree

in Counseling and School Psychology – as a single mother of young children, she wanted to work on a school calendar schedule. “As my children got older, though, the real estate bug was biting,” said Deanne with a smile. She launched her business in Northern California in 2005, and finally moved herself and her business to San Diego when she bought a Del Sur home in 2010. This past December, Deanne celebrated her 10th anniversary in real estate, and she’s excited to bring her expertise and enthusiasm into the next 10 years of connecting with clients.  SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

Great Equalizer Holly Zamoyski Finds Her Bliss in Log Rolling by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Spark Photography

L

og rolling is a sport Holly Zamoyski has practiced her entire life. She grew up in a Seattle neighborhood called Laurelhurst where, rain or shine, summer days were spent at a neighbor’s beach club, log rolling. As a shy child, the versatility appealed to her. “I felt perfectly comfortable and accepted if I was quiet up on the log,” Holly said. “Similarly, if I wanted a conversation, one was often available with the other people on the log.” Now she returns to Seattle every summer to revisit this passion, but Holly also rolls right along here in San Diego. The sport is a great upper body workout and agility challenge – as the initial ‘up-then-fall’ pattern improves to more ‘up’ than ‘fall’, it is a core and leg strengthener. “At every level smiles and laughs are inevitable with crazy falls into the water!” Holly shared. Last year, Holly read an article about the increasing popularity of log rolling in the U.S. A Minnesota company called Key Log sparked her interest and she was excited to find they were coming to San Diego to demonstrate their synthetic logs. She was able to buy one of her own, which, attached to the back of her black van, has turned into a recognizable feature around town. Some people ask what the log looks like, and what’s in the red tube. “No, that’s the log. It’s not in that red tube, it is that red tube,” she laughed. She’s used the log in Mission Bay, high school and backyard pools, and even open ocean. “Every group I’ve introduced the log to loves it, whether they participate or spectate.” The whole family loves the water – Holly’s husband is an All-American water polo player, and her three children, ages 16, 13, and 10, also play water polo. They’ve recently put in a backyard pool for all of their water activities. Now that she has these advantages, Holly expects to improve and compete in the 2016 master’s novice log rolling competition held in Minnesota each summer. She plans to promote and support log rolling in San Diego by sharing all she has learned through Key Logs, with a hope for designing her own line of recreational logs someday. “One of my favorite parts about log rolling is the unique vantage point. I enjoy being up there and seeing the 360 degrees of water views and activity around me.” 

GOING SOLAR SolarUnion Offers High-Quality Solar PV Systems Guaranteed to Last by RANDI CANTRELL | photos provided by SolarUnion

ith energy rates steadily increasing year after year, going solar is becoming a popular option among homeowners who are looking to save money on their electricity bill or contribute to environmental conservation. SolarUnion is a full-service solar electricity developer founded in 2011 on the principle of making solar energy systems affordable and accessible for all. Founder and CEO Ivan La Frinere-Sandoval explained, “The motivation behind the company was and remains to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, specifically solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity, first in California and then globally.” With this goal in mind, SolarUnion prides itself on providing high-quality, custom-tailored solar PV systems with exceptional customer service. “We focus on truly putting the customer first when it comes to all aspects of the system development process, from designing a system with the best visual appearance to investing in the highest quality components to ensure optimal performance

Customers may choose to own their own system or enter into a long-term lease with SolarUnion, and options for no-money-down or up-front cash are available. For homeowners who find the idea of going solar attractive but complicated or intimidating, SolarUnion offers peace of mind with a comprehensive, turn-key solution. One customer shared, “I spent a lot of time researching panels and invertors and considered installing these myself, but SolarUnion was great to work with and handled the permits and every aspect of installation and interconnection with the utility company. They also offer ongoing maintenance and installed optimizers so I can see my power generation online each day. I have been 100 percent happy with the way it has worked out.” 

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters How Will Rising Rates Affect the Real Estate Market in 2016? by SCOTT VOAK

I

nterest rates are rising. Heading into 2016, this one factor will have the largest effect on home prices. Rising rates have the potential to trap people in their current home and make it harder for new buyers to enter the market, but they also could force more homes to be listed for sale. Whichever dominates will determine where prices will go. Rising rates limit purchasing power. A family that purchased a 2,000-square-foot home in our area in 2012 paid about $500,000 and had a mortgage payment (with taxes) of about $2,500. If the family had an additional $750/month of debt payments, the income required for that purchase was around $95,000. Today, that home is worth approximately $650,000, a 150% increase in the family’s investment. However, if that family wants to move up to a 2,800-square-foot home in the same neighborhood, they are looking at a price today of $875,000. Even with the increased equity, higher rates push the payment up $2,000 a month, requiring an income of roughly $155,000, a 60% increase in three years. You can substitute values to fit any price range, but the point is many families are going to find that they have to make the smaller home work – they just can’t move up. This will significantly reduce sales activity as not only can these families not purchase a larger home, but will stay in the smaller home to keep their kids in the school district. This lower demand for move-up homes, but it also lowers the supply of the homes they would be moving from. This creates upward pressure at the lower end of the market due to lack of supply and downward pressure at the upper end due to lack of available buyers.

On the other hand, many people took advantage of 5 and 10-year interest only loans to purchase homes in the last decade. A 10-year interest only loan that rolls into a 20-year amortization loan will see payments jump up to 80-90%. Since rates are up, these owners can’t refinance. The choice is make the higher payment or sell the house. So rising rates may cause some people to hold onto homes when they want to sell and others to sell when they want to stay. From what I am seeing, I think we are more likely to see a reduction in inventory that will cause an increase in price. So, while you may be stuck in a home that’s a bit too small, the consolation is that the value will rise, creating increased equity for you and your family. 

Green and Blue... Let’s Keep It That Way!

I

s your New Year’s resolution to reduce your carbon footprint, or make small steps towards helping the environment? Take inspiration from Del Norte’s students attempting to improve our shared world. Del Norte’s leading movement for environmental change is a club called Ecofuture. Ecofuture aims to “make the world a greener place one small act a time.” Not only is the club responsible for the entire recycling system on campus, members also travel around the city of San Diego participating in park and beach cleanups, planting trees, and fundraising through their annual E-waste event in January. Their next

immediate goal is composting, and their ultimate goal is creating a greener campus. Their overall message? “To bring awareness to the students of Del Norte, and promote an eco-friendly lifestyle” says Co-President Samantha Tran. Another changemaker on campus is Madeleine Everhart, who founded the club Going Green this year. With aspirations of selling produce at lunch, she says, “We are trying to create a healthier future for young adults at Del Norte through different options at lunch. Our plans are to construct a hydroponic greenhouse to grow the fruits and vegetables.”

Aside from being involved in clubs, students help by altering their lifestyles. Simple things students partake in are using reusable water bottles and food containers, recycling at home, and reducing shower time and overall water usage. The efforts of these exceptional students will help assure our school stays green, and Nighthawks continue to soar in crystal clear skies. 

Amelia Cecchetto is a senior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine.
