Camps. Camps. And More Camps!
I
Derrick Breaux Publisher
can’t believe we are thinking about summer already! Where does the time go? I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a little overwhelming. Two or more months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, last year we brought you the 1st Annual Summer Camp Guide. We had no idea of how popular it was going to be. This year, I am proud to present the 2nd Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 50). It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in the magazine! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

“Leaving the classroom for the dance studio was always one of my favorite things about summer. I remember attending ballet and tap dance camps, and loving every minute! Summer camp activities are a great way to energize yourself and get active.” – Randi, Associate Editor
“One of my best camp memories was with the YMCA. It was held in Balboa Park. I have memories of shooting bow and arrows and learning lots about different cultures. I saw how they made teepees and learned traditional dances. It was a lot of fun.” – Jessica, Director of Business Development
“I attended an art camp in middle school that allowed me to be creative with styles and tools I had never used before. By taking me outside my comfort zone, I learned to be more open to new ways of doing things. To this day I love the challenge of using a new art medium” – Shyanne, Associate Editor

ven though she lives in 4S Ranch, Bailey Brennen cannot say enough about her charter school in Escondido. Attending small classes at Classical Academy High, she feels the teachers are helpful, friendly, and passionate about subjects and students. “Even teachers who have never had me in class say hello to me and know me by name,” she said. Bailey is a National Merit Commended Scholar with a perfect 800 on both the Math II and Physics portions of the SAT. The robotics team and the Academic League are crucial parts of Bailey’s busy day. Her robotics team, The Agency, practices year-round and

won the Xerox Creativity Award 2015 at the very first Robotics San Diego Regional. They plan on competing at Nationals, held this year in St. Louis. “Robotics is quite an expensive endeavor,” Bailey explained, “and our team’s goal is to raise $40,000 per season.” Her Academic League team is currently undefeated and was featured on North County Academic League’s televised event in February. This is Bailey’s favorite extracurricular activity, because she feels it’s very rewarding to answer questions correctly. “Math comes very naturally to me so I am quite good with the calculus questions,” she smiled. “I’m also the team’s guru on Norse and Greek mythology.” With Physics emerging as Bailey’s favorite class, her teacher, Mr. David Bower, has been her inspiration. He suggested she join the robotics team, and this led to her enrollment as one of only two girls taking AP Computer Science last year, plus a SolidWorks CAD class at Palomar to further assist her team. “Mr. Bower always made his lectures interesting,” Bailey explained. “I was truly sad when the class ended.” Besides many academic pursuits, Bailey shares her mother’s passion for quilting. She attends a group sew-in every Friday night and is currently working on a massive pixel quilt of Nintendo's Super Mario characters. She hopes to enter the quilt into this year’s San Diego Fair. Bailey is also teaching herself Japanese, which she’d like to utilize during a future college trip abroad. Speaking of college, Bailey aspires to study Neuroscience, uncovering root causes of developmental and learning disabilities.

Sustainability at School SOLANA CENTER HELPS MONTEREY RIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’S ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS
T
he Solana Center for Environmental Innovation recently partnered with Monterey Ridge Elementary School in 4S Ranch to help expand the school’s sustainability programs. The Solana Center installed a vermicomposting – composting with worms – bin for the school’s garden. Fruit and vegetable waste from school lunches can be composted in the new bin, providing a hands-on learning opportunity for students. The Worms are the Way program was funded by the 4S Ranch-Del Sur Community Foundation. Solana Center also worked with MRES staff to develop lunch waste sorting stations: landfill, food waste, recycling, and lunch trays. The center gave presentations to educate students about the new efforts in sustainability at their school, covering the four R’s – reuse, reduce, recycle, and rot – as well as the new vermicomposting bin and the sorting stations. “Students gained an understanding of the advantages of worm composting and its value in growing food, and learned that food waste does not need to be placed in the trash,” said Diane Hazard, Solana Center’s Education Program Manager. The presentations were given through five grade-specific assemblies, and the center also spent two days monitoring lunchtime waste sorting. Waste audits before and after the educational effort showed first the school’s potential for diverting waste to recycling and compost instead of landfills, and then the school’s success at achieving those goals. Before the program’s implementation, all lunch waste was
heading to the landfill. Six weeks after the educational effort, students were successfully diverting about 50 percent of lunch waste by volume. Learn more about the Solana Center and its efforts towards grassroots environmental action at www.solanacenter.org.

The appeal of the area stuck with him, and after some time spent with friends who resided there, he brought his family in 2011. “It’s great for kids and it’s close to everything we need,” Eric said. Eric is a professor of Communications, currently at MiraCosta College, and the flexibility of his schedule allows him more family time. “I have a beautiful wife named Kim and two awesome boys named Eli (6) and Tyler (3),” he smiled. He completed his undergraduate work at Cal Poly SLO and graduate studies at SDSU, where his high school debate experience led him to be a debate coach at SDSU and a career in the Communications field. “I love my work,” Eric explained. “I get to spend every day helping people improve their communication skills. It’s a job that has a very clear and real payoff in the lives of the people I serve.” MiraCosta acknowledged his work in this important field by recognizing Eric this year as Teacher of the Year. Previous to that, he won Most Influential Faculty Member in School of Communication when he was working at SDSU. “I also was named Fifth Hottest Professor in America by ratemyprofessors.com in 2010! My wife loved that one,” Eric joked. Eric is involved with some other projects, and he’s enthused with the idea of startups. He's currently working with a company called Makerthreads, a startup that's changing how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education is taught. “We are running a Kickstarter right now for a product called SCIO,” he shared. “I absolutely love the energy of taking an idea and making it real.” As far as community assistance, the startup has volunteered in many places to help teach kids how to code and experience STEM education. Once the Kickstarter is finished they will probably reach out to more 92127 schools to show them what’s been built. “Typically we are helping out with traditionally underserved communities to show how even those with no experience and resources can thrive with the right equipment.” As a face of 92127, Eric Robertson has clear-cut goals for the future. “I want to keep teaching, make sure I always have time for family, and stay involved with startups and the community,” he said. “Everything else is a bonus.”

Five Nutrition Myths Busted by CHRISTEN BENKE, D.O.; Scripps Clinic, Del Mar
Don’t let nutrition myths sabotage your health goals, whether those are losing weight, having more energy, or getting more exercise. Don’t eat after 8 p.m. The theory is that you burn up food you eat earlier in the day, while calories eaten at night sit in your system and turn into fat. In reality, calories can’t tell time, and your body uses calories the same way morning, noon, and night. If those late-night calories are not burned while you watch TV or sleep, they will be the next day once you start moving. That said, make sure you are not snacking late at night because you are tired and have mistaken fatigue for hunger. How much you eat and what you eat is far more important than when you eat it. If I exercise, I should take a protein supplement or protein shake. While it is true that when exercising, particularly at a high intensity, you need to make sure you
eat enough protein for your muscles to grow and repair, most people, even athletes, can get all the protein they need by eating sources of lean protein, such as meat, fish, chicken, and dairy products. In some specific instances, protein powders may be useful for an ordinary athlete, such as for a teenager who is growing, when you are recovering from an injury, when you are increasing your workouts (such as training for a half-marathon), or if you are going vegan. Be careful, though, as it doesn’t take much protein to achieve these goals and overloading can be hard on your kidneys and liver. A gluten-free diet is healthier. Unless you have a legitimate reason to eliminate gluten from your diet, such as celiac disease, you can eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. While gluten itself doesn’t offer special nutritional benefits, many whole grains that contain gluten do, so before eliminating gluten, get tested if you think you may have an issue.
Vegetarian and vegan diets are healthier. A vegetarian or vegan diet can certainly be healthy, but it depends on what foods are being eaten. Technically, eating a diet of cheese and chocolate would be vegetarian, but not healthy. Avoiding meat and dairy products eliminates the saturated fat and health issues from overeating fatty meats and high-fat dairy, but vegan and vegetarian diets are only healthier if you replace the meat and dairy with healthy alternatives. What is true of vegetarian and vegan diets is that they are generally environmentally friendly and more sustainable than a diet heavy in meat.
Sugar should not be in my diet. All types of sugar – including fructose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose – are broken down in our bodies into glucose, which our cells use for energy. Some of these sugars, such as fructose and lactose, occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, and other foods. But many of the foods we love contain added sugars, usually

to enhance flavor, and these added sugars have been cited as contributors to many health problems. The most common sources of added sugars include soft drinks, cakes, pies, fruit drinks, and chocolate. A rule of thumb is that sugar should always be accompanied by as many nutrients as possible, and added sugar should be avoided.

Future Cities
LOCAL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR CREATIVE CITY MODELS
L
ocal students from St. Michael’s School were recently among 40 teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students competing at the Southern California regional Future City Competition. The local event was held in Encinitas, and volunteers from the local engineering community served as judges. Nationwide, the competition includes over 40,000 students from 1,350 middle schools. The Future City program inspires students to explore the engineering design process, project management, and solutions to real-world problems. Students spend around four months creating their cities, which are designed to exist at least 100 years in the future. This year’s theme was Waste Not, Want Not, and students had to design a citywide solid waste management system. Teams submitted a 1,500-word essay outlining their solution to the theme; a virtual city slideshow; a to-scale city model made of recycled material with at least one moving part and a $100 budget; a seven-minute presentation to the judges; and a project plan outlining their process. Teams from St. Michael’s School won two special category awards. Hope Valley, designed and built by Allyson Atkins, Ann Palayur, and Vianna Schatz, was honored for Best Transportation. Luminous City, created by Annie Pehrson, Lauren Kogelman, and Madeline Duley, was the People’s Choice Award winner, selected by ballot.

T
he Sood family has a range of interests and education that sets them apart. Residents of the Legacy community in 4S Ranch since 2010, their family dynamics span the globe, while staying grounded in their service to the San Diego community. Sanjeev and Alka met over 20 years ago at an Indian cultural event at SDSU. Father, Sanjeev, was born in Chamba, India, where he studied computer engineering. He relocated to San Diego in 1995, and today he works as a software engineer at Broadcom. Mother, Alka, was born in Canada, raised in Florida, and graduated from UCSD with a degree in Biochemistry/Cell Biology and a Master’s from SDSU in Public Health – Epidemiology. She worked as a research scientist at UCSD before transitioning to stay-at-home mom. Now, she volunteers at the UCSD Kawasaki Disease Research Center, working to treat Kawasaki Disease (KD), an illness characterized by inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body that occurs predominantly in young children. The KD Research Center is “dedicated to solving the mysteries of this disease and improving diagnostic tools and treatments,” she explained.

The couple has one daughter, Ashna, a sophomore at Del Norte High School. “In addition to her coursework, she’s involved in Science Olympiad, Fight Against Hunger, UNICEF, and the South Asian Cultural Club,” Alka explained. Ashna’s extracurricular activities include piano, karate, and Kathak, an Indian classical dance. After watching her mother volunteer in classrooms during her elementary and middle school years, Ashna now volunteers as a coach for Science Olympiad and choreographer and teacher of Kathak. She also helps with the children at West Coast Martial Arts Academy and volunteers for food packaging events that deliver food to the hungry across the world. Together, the Sood family enjoys everything from local hiking trails and watching movies to traveling the world. “We’ve been to India, England, France, Canada, Bahrain, and various places in the U.S.,” they shared. Ashna even started the “Sood News,” her own travel journal for family members who enjoyed reading about their adventures. The Sood family has found everything they need to call 92127 home. Alka explained, “We moved here because we heard so many wonderful things about the area and the schools.” The proximity to family and close friends, parks, trails, shopping, and restaurants weighed into the decision. “We feel very blessed to live in a wonderful community close to friends and family.”

oms aking Six Figures D
r. Barbara Ryan, a surgeon of many years, chose to make a change in her career in 2010 for greater flexibility. “I enjoyed being a surgeon and caring for my patients immensely, however, the medical arena was changing and I simply didn’t have flexibility in my schedule that would allow me to balance my personal and professional lives; something many women struggle with," said Barbara. "Also, my husband is in the military and has no control over where we get stationed, meaning everything I poured into building a surgical practice (time, energy, and money) could be wiped out with one phone call. Not only did I want more time to spend with my husband and also to care for my aging parents, I wanted to ensure that when I built up a substantial income it was portable, no matter where the military said we needed to be.” So, Barbara teamed up with two other women to create Moms Making Six Figures. “I knew that I wasn’t the only woman juggling family and career. Now, six years later, it feels phenomenal to not only have that flexibility personally, but to also show others a viable means of achieving financial success while maintaining a balanced life. For some, that means income replacement, and for others it means creating supplemental income around family life or their current jobs.” Barbara insists that anyone, regardless of her background, can do this: “We all have very different educational and professional backgrounds and our own unique personalities, but we all want flexibility around our families and the chance to build a business while helping others,” said Barbara. “Moms” is a marketing company that represents a U.S.-based manufacturer. Though based in San Diego, many of the nearly 90 women who work with Moms live all over – West Coast, East Coast, Midwest, and the South. Of these women, about half work 25-plus hours per week. Their only qualifications are that they’re self-motivated, hard-working, and coachable. Barbara invites interested women to reach out through www.momsmakingsixfigures.com. “Learn a little more about who we are and what we do. It’ll be well worth your time,” she said.

4S RANCH STUDENT IS WORKING TO BUILD A SPORTS CENTER IN TIJUANA
T
ommy Twomey, a 4S Ranch resident and student at Cathedral Catholic High School, has been working with his baseball teammates to help construct a sports and community center in Florida Anabel, Tijuana, Mexico. Through Build a Miracle, the teammates are working to raise $33,000 to fund the center’s construction – each student’s goal is $3,000. Once the construction starts they’ll provide muscle power to help as well. Fundraising has taken many forms over the past few months. Garage sales began in February – Tommy raised nearly $1,000 at his first sale early in the month. He has another garage sale planned for March 19. Beyond the fundraising, Tommy and the other CCHS students have made personal connections with the kids they’re helping. Each CCHS student was matched with a buddy in Tijuana. Tommy’s buddy is 12-year-old Ricardo. After exchanging letters in English and Spanish, the buddies got to meet in person in December when the CCHS students traveled south of the border. They exchanged gifts of sweatshirts, blankets, and sports apparel, then played a friendly soccer match on a dirt lot. That same dirt lot will soon be transformed into the sports center, complete with courts, bleachers, lighting, and community rooms. The first build date is scheduled for March 22. “They are all really excited about that,” shared Lauri Twomey, Tommy’s mother. “This Build a Miracle experience has been life-changing for him.” Learn more about the organization at www.buildamiracle.net.

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Hats Off for Volunteers
First 5 San Diego
The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame, and the Rancho Bernardo High School Foundation are gearing up for the 7th Annual Hats Off to Volunteers, scheduled for Saturday, April 16. Starting at 9 a.m. in the Rancho Bernardo High School auditorium, the free event will recognize 70 local individuals and their contributions to the community. RBCF President Debby Kurth said, “It’s a nice way to say thank you to all the volunteers in different organizations whose representatives are receiving recognition. Hats Off for Volunteers Chairman Nick Anastasopoulos added, “It’s one of my favorite things that we do in conjunction with the RB Hall of Fame and the RBHS Foundation – saying thank you to those who make Rancho Bernardo a wonderful place to live.” Individual volunteers are selected by the leaders of the service organization they participate in. Attendees will be able to learn more about the nominating organizations at their exposition booths before and after the recognition ceremony. Find out more at www.rbhatsoff.org.
Supportive Housing Bill
Best Buddies Fundraiser
92127 resident Susan Huniu and her daughter Hayley recently starred in a public service announcement for First 5 San Diego. The organization’s programs and services are designed to serve local children through the first five years of their lives, with healthy development screenings, dental care, preschool, and parenting workshops. “I was super excited when we got cast for the First 5 San Diego Public Service Announcement,” Susan shared on her blog. “Not only because I knew we would have fun on the set as a family, but First 5 San Diego’s mission is a topic I am extremely passionate about.” The video showed Susan and Hayley playing, singing, and reading, and talked about the importance of creative playtime for developing minds. Susan added, “Personally, I feel that incorporating reading and music into your child’s daily life is one of the best gifts you can ever give them.” Learn more at www.first5sandiego.com or visit Susan’s blog at www.hayleyandashton.com.
Assembly Bill 1500 recently passed unanimously through the State Assembly. The legislation, by San Diego Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, aims to allow local governments to create more housing opportunities for the homeless. “I am pleased that my bill, which would enable cities and counties to plan for the construction of supportive and transitional housing projects, passed the Assembly,” said Maienschein. “Many of our homeless also suffer from some form of mental illness, and these individuals are the ones who have the greatest need for stable housing.” The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that there were 115,738 homeless Californians in 2015 – 21 percent of the homeless population nationwide. Many social service experts in the state advocate housing-first strategy; by offering safe, secure housing, individuals and families are better able to make use of other necessary services and opportunities to get back on their feet.
Miss and Miss Teen Rancho Bernardo
Local community members raised $7,390 at the 2016 Best Buddies Fundraiser, held at Players Sports Bar in Poway. The money raised will go towards the Best Buddies Ball, hosted by Rancho Bernardo High School Best Buddies and open to chapters from throughout the county. The event is a prom-like evening for students with disabilities who might not get to enjoy high school dances. Best Buddies International partners students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities, allowing students with disabilities to form lifelong friendships, develop leadership skills, and create deeper connections with the community. This year’s fundraiser was a full house event, with pizza, pool, music, and giveaways galore. “It’s so rewarding to be a part of this organization,” said Event Chair Bill Mullett. “The impact on these kids’ lives is priceless. Their smiles say it all.” Event sponsors were Arizona Tile, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, CCS Global Tech, Cosentino, Daltile, Poway Transmissions, R Douglas Construction, and San Diego Granite.

Women’s Center Fundraiser
The Women of the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo raised $11,164.26 at their latest annual fundraiser event, benefiting the Jean McLaughlin Women’s Center for Health and Healing at Pomerado Hospital. The fundraising event has grown in scope and impact since it was first held several years ago – the inaugural fundraiser in 2013 raised just under $6,000 for the center. Palomar Health Foundation Director of Major Giving Kimberly Cardoso visited the group to talk about the center’s work and its plans for the future. The center is a 10,406-square-foot facility and provides education and support groups in addition to evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. Funds raised will be put towards genetic testing, mammograms, consultations, and follow-up appointments to discuss diagnosis and treatment options.
RB Chorale Scholarship
Applications are open from now through April 9 for the 2016 RB Chorale Scholarship program. The program is open to all graduating high school seniors in the county who plan to pursue their musical arts education in college or university. Young musicians from all fields are welcome, including voice, string, wind, percussion, or any other solo instrument. Qualified applicants will audition before the RB Chorale Board and a panel of judges on April 30 at Rancho Bernardo’s StudioWest. The six candidates with the highest combined points based on audition, scholastics, and need will then compete again on June 10 and 11 – with three students performing each night – during the RB Chorale’s Showstoppers from Stage and Screen performance at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Awards will be determined by audience ballot voting the evening of each performance. Find the application form and more information at www.rbchorale.org, or contact Scholarship Chair Keith Cheney at 858-748-1273.

Del Mar Pines School’s New Building
Del Mar Pines School, a leading private kindergarten through sixth grade school in Carmel Valley, has announced the completion of its new two-story building. A new building was a longtime dream of school Director Marci McCord. With the help of the Del Mar Pines Foundation for Education, parents, alumni, and the Gallagher family, that dream came true. Funded and built in under a year, the vision for the new building was not to add more students but to offer current students more. “I am very excited about the new opportunities for learning and deeper exploration our students can now benefit from,” said Marci. The campus expansion created a new sixth grade classroom and library. It also made room for a dedicated science and Spanish lab and performing arts room. The school invites prospective families to an open house, campus tour, and breakfast with the school director on March 16. Call 858-481-5615 to RSVP. Learn more at www.delmarpines.com.
In mid-January Victor Wisehart, currently on the cast list for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical An American in Paris, taught a master class for advanced dancers at the Southern California Ballet (SCB) studio. A graduate of the dance company, Victor returned home to connect and pass down the knowledge and skills that he developed during his training with SBC, which at the time was called the Black Mountain Dance Center. Victor had performed with the company in numerous productions including Coppelia, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker. On full scholarships, he attended The Joffrey and American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensives and The Boston Conservatory, graduating magna cum laude with a B.F.A. in dance. SCB Executive Director Kate Hirsh stated, “Southern California Ballet is extremely fortunate to have our alumni return home to pass on their experiences and tremendous knowledge to the young students in training.” Learn more at www.southerncaliforniaballet.org.

rom its convenient location in the heart of the community, Children’s Primary Care Medical Group (CPCMG) has played a vital role in meeting the unique medical needs of the babies, kids, and teens in 4S Ranch. “We are the only medical office in the 4S Ranch community that focuses solely on children and their health and development in a child-friendly environment,” said Dr. Jaime Friedman, lead physician at CPCMG 4S Ranch. “From the spacious, bright office to the separate ‘sick child’ and ‘well child’ waiting rooms and our experienced pediatricians, we are here for one purpose: to provide quality, easily accessible pediatric health care to the families in and around 4S Ranch.” CPCMG 4S Ranch is part of a historic, local legacy of pediatric health care. In 1995, a group of San Diego pediatricians formed a network of pediatric practitioners by combining the medical administrative function of six pediatric medical practices. Since its inception 20 years ago, CPCMG has grown to include more than 100 pediatricians working in 21 offices located throughout San Diego and southern Riverside counties. “The 4S Ranch office is a great example of our tagline – CPCMG…In Your Neighborhood,” said Friedman. “It’s our pleasure not only to treat local children and work with families, but also to be an active member of the 4S Ranch community as sponsors of local school events, Boys and Girls Club activities, and Movies in the Park.” All CPCMG 4S Ranch pediatricians are board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics, representing their ongoing commitment to pediatric health and the well-being of 4S Ranch families.
In addition, the pediatricians maintain close relationships with pediatric specialists to coordinate patient follow-up care as needed, as all CPCMG patients have access to care at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. For parents, scheduling an appointment at CPCMG 4S Ranch is easy and convenient thanks to after-hours and weekend appointments. The patient portal MyChart offers secure online access to their child’s medical records and allows parents to manage appointments, check test results, communicate with their pediatrician and request prescription refills. The “We are the only medical office Nurse Care in the 4S Ranch community Connect program that focuses solely on links parents children and their health to pediatric registered and development in a nurses who child-friendly environment.” are available Monday through Friday to provide advice and guidance to parents. After-hours telephone triage is also available. For more information about CPCMG 4S Ranch visit www.cpcmg.net.

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS I
nspired by 14 summers of camp experience as a camper, counselor, and director, Stuart Jones decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps, after moving to San Diego in 2001. As the current owners and directors of the camp, Stuart and his wife Kelly strive to provide children with a traditional camp experience that they deserve, complete with outdoor adventures and lasting friendships. A summer at Outpost is free from distraction, as the programs are 100 percent outdoors and device-free – the directors call it “outside and unplugged.” The camps are open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Camps have been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association and have also received Markel Insurance’s coveted Safety First designation for many consecutive seasons with a perfect safety record. Stuart and his wife both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested eight to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Ages seven to nine can explore ballet and a variety of dance styles from contemporary to hip-hop – anything you might see on So You Think You Can Dance. “Emphasis is placed on proper warm-up, safe stretching techniques, mastering specific moves, finding the dancer’s inner style, and having fun!” added Kate. For dancers who already have some experience in dance, the four-week summer intensive is a great way to delve deeper into the world of dance. Intermediate to advanced dancers have the opportunity to explore the Cecchetti ballet curriculum, commercialstyle jazz, modern, contemporary, Stanislavsky method acting, classical Chinese dance, dance history, and pointe classes. Dancers can sign up for one-week sessions or all four weeks from July 5 through Aug. 1. Southern California Ballet is currently celebrating its 30 th anniversary of creative excellence under the continuing leadership of renowned Artistic Director Sylvia Palmer. PACIFIC SWIM AND RANCHO ARBOLITOS SWIM AND TENNIS CAMPS
T
he philosophy at Pacific Swim and Rancho Arbolitos Swim and Tennis Camps is all about having fun while making friends, learning sportsmanship, and building skills. Spring Swim & Tennis Camp will run from April 11 to 15; Summer Swim & Tennis Camps will run from June 13 to Aug. 12; and Summer Swim Team will run from June 13 to Aug. 13.
Swim & Tennis Camp Parents can choose full-day camps or half-day camps. Weeklong sessions feature tennis or swim and tennis combined. “For 20 years our camps have provided a safe place in the summer for kids to make new friends while learning to swim and play tennis,” revealed Owner Di Molenaar. Kids are divided by age and ability, from beginning to advanced in swim and tennis. In the pool and on the court, children can work on technique, play games, and win prizes. Early drop off and aftercare is available.
RANCHO ARBOLITOS
Pacific Swim Summer Swim Team The Pacific Swim coaches are CPR, Lifeguard, and USA Swim Coach Certified. “We have taught and coached thousands of kids from Poway and San Diego over the past 28 years,” added Di. The kids have a good time while learning and improving their strokes and new skills. Swimmers attend three times per week and there are three fun novice swim meets where everyone wins ribbons. In the beginner novice class the swimmers must be able to swim across the pool in freestyle and backstroke. Their lessons last 30 minutes. The advanced novice swimmers know their strokes and swim three times weekly for one hour. Days and times are flexible as multiple classes are offered in the morning or afternoon, Monday through Thursday and Saturday morning. Learn more at www.psswim.com and www.ranchoarbolitos.com.

THERAPEUTIC LITERACY CENTER
W
hile summer vacation offers ample time for students to run, play, and exercise their bodies, it also offers the perfect opportunity to exercise their minds. During the busy school year, students may not get the one-on-one time with a teacher or tutor nor the therapy to develop their underlying weaknesses in learning skills. This is where the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) comes in. While the center, located in Solana Beach, offers specialized training to students year-round, they utilize the extra time that summer affords by offering specialized camp programs to prepare children for success when school starts in the fall. Their summer programming includes an intensive therapy to overcome challenges and learning disabilities by focusing on underlying learning skills, as well as a learning “bootcamp” for children that are strong in their underlying skills but need work in the areas of math, handwriting, or keyboarding. All of TLC’s programs can help a student be successful in the Common Core curriculum. TLC’s summer programs include both group learning experiences and individualized one-on-one sessions, provided by specially trained clinicians. If a full-day program is chosen, the day may even include outings to a surf camp in Solana Beach or an activity at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. “A cognitive bootcamp mixed with hours of outdoor exercise is the perfect summer combination for children wanting to enter their next grade level with confidence in their success,” said Maria Bagby, TLC Executive Director. Because spaces fill up quickly, early registration is encouraged. To learn more about TLC and how they can help eliminate learning challenges in reading, writing, and math visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200.

Dr. Susan Hong Offers Patients the Latest Dental Technology in a Warm and Friendly Environment by JENNIFER FRAKES
hen Dr. Hong opened her family and cosmetic dentistry practice in Rancho Bernardo, she focused on providing the highest quality of dental care in a comfortable and welcoming environment. “I designed the office so it doesn’t feel clinical and cold. We have dental chairs that have heat and massage features and televisions on the ceilings so patients can watch TV and be entertained during procedures,” explained Dr. Hong. The practice also offers sedation dentistry to patients who are especially anxious about specific dental procedures or visiting the dentist in general. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1997, Dr. Hong was in the beginning stages of opening a practice near Wall Street in New York City when marriage and family brought her to San Diego. “I started a practice in downtown San Diego in 2005, but recently decided to sell that practice so that I can serve the community where I live (Rancho Peñasquitos) and the surrounding areas,” stated Dr. Hong. Having an office closer to home also allows Dr. Hong to spend more time with her family and be more actively involved in the local community. Dr. Hong places great value on providing personalized care and is committed to learning the unique situation of each and every patient. “I want to get to know my patients’ stories. :::: FROM THE DENTIST
The Amazing and “Not Scary” Dental Visit by SPENCER MAUSETH, D.D.S., 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
A
s parents we have a great responsibility to care for our children. Taking kids to the dentist doesn’t have to be a scary thing. An amazing dental experience can happen for your child. It happens every day in our pediatric dental office. Here are a few tips that will get you and your child started off on the right foot at the dentist: Early visits are key. Scheduling your child’s dental visit by their first birthday can provide a lowkey time for you to get to know your child’s dentist and express any dental concerns. Simple is best. Questions will arise and inevitably something your child has heard will
be vocalized. "Making the teeth sparkle" and "checking for sugar bugs" are a few fun ways to simplify the process. Practice at home. Reading books and setting aside some time to play “dentist” will do wonders for your little one. Be flexible in your expectations. Some fussing is normal, and many times it’s just the newness of everything that has them concerned. Choose a happy dentist. The dentist you choose is very important. They can set the tone and will make all the difference in how your child views oral health care. Have a contagious smile. How you approach these visits will translate into how your child’s attitude towards dental care is shaped. These hints and tips, coupled with a great outlook, will
be a gift that your children will have for years, along with one amazing cavity-free smile!
Your child’s healthy, beautiful smile means everything to us! We Offer...

ocal Pre-Kindergarten teacher Sharelle Venable recently entered Del Sur Elementary School into a social media competition to host the San Diego Padres for a campus visit. The school won, and Padres players, members of the Pad Squad, and Padres staff stopped by for a day on campus. Visiting players were Cory Spangenberg, Travis Jankowski, and Randy Jones. They first stopped by Ms. Venable’s class to greet students and answer questions. Then, the rest of the school had a chance to hang out with the team during two assemblies for Pre-K through second grade and third through fifth grade.

his is not just another story about two Realtors®. Rather, it’s a story of experiences, relationships, and how two people are reinventing real estate. Picture a successful real estate agent with over 11 years of experience. His clients were thrilled with their results, yet Matt felt something was missing. Suddenly, a question popped into his mind. “Other states require an attorney to be a part of a residential real estate transaction: why not California?” Then it hit him. Wouldn’t clients feel better knowing that their real estate agent was also an attorney?

How Communities Thrive TANNY JOYCE GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY SHE CALLS HOME by LYDIA COBB | photo by Savoring the Sweet Life Photography
T
anny Joyce cherishes adventure. “I worked three jobs in high school to save for my first trip to Europe,” she mused. It sparked such a great time, she added, “I am always looking for the next adventure.” Tammy grew up in La Mesa and met her husband, Rob, at SDSU. She lived upstate only for grad school. Their three sons, Adam, Kyle, and Logan, are fifth-generation San Diegans. They’ve lived in Copperwood since 2002. “Our boys grew up as the community grew,” shared Tanny. “We appreciate the fact that our kids always have people around to help and support them.” Giving to others is integral in Tanny’s life. When her boys were young, she started volunteering for youth sports, the PTA at Stone Ranch Elementary and Oak Valley Middle Schools, and on the Del Norte High School football board. She and Rob are founding members of the 4S Ranch Del Sur Community Foundation. The organization works to improve quality of life and to meet emerging needs in 4S Ranch-Del Sur through philanthropy. “I got involved because we were looking for a way to support the entire community,” said Tanny. By attending events and eventually joining the grants committee, she became familiar with the community’s nonprofits. It’s her third year as chair of the foundation. “This is a pooled philanthropy approach,” explained Tanny. “The more members we have, the more we can grant back to the community.” As they enter the eighth year of grant funding, the foundation has designated nearly $120,000 to more than 20 community programs. Her profession brings expertise to her role as chair. Tanny is a senior partner with Apex Performance Strategies, an organizational development consulting firm based in Solana Beach. As a certified corporate coach, Tanny works with groups and individuals to improve performance, work that she’s enjoyed for more than 20 years. Back at home, she loves walking the trails. As a family, they support their sons’ sports at Del Norte. They have camped at San Elijo State Beach for many summers. As Tanny looks forward to spring, two public celebrations will be held when the foundation announces grant applicants (March 24) and the grant celebration and check presentation (May 6). It’s truly about community. Tanny is central to the mission – at life, at work, and here in her hometown.

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD
STARGAZING IN SAN DIEGO
These Breathtaking Views Will Have You Seeing Stars – Literally by SHYANNE LOPEZ
B
eing surrounded by beaches, beautiful landscapes, and a sprawling city, it's no wonder we tend to keep our eyes focused on what is laid out right in front of us. While known for its sunny and clear skies, come sunset, parts of San Diego's skyline are anything but empty – you just have to look up. For years, the area has attracted professional and amateur astronomers and stargazers alike for the highly accessible view of not just stars but also our own galaxy and nearby planets. In fact, this spring, Mars will be the largest and most clear that it's been in more than a decade. It's the perfect occasion to bring out your inner astronomer. While it's tough to stargaze in highly developed areas, you can view them with ease at various rural locations in and around the county that have remained virtually untouched by city lights. So, if you're interested in catching a glimpse of the cosmos this spring, jump in your car and check out one – or all – of these unique destinations.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Two hours east of San Diego, you can find California's largest state park. The desert is a hot spot for professional and amateur stargazers due to its seclusion from urban lights. In fact, the park's neighboring town of Borrego Springs was designated in 2009 as the second "Dark Sky Community" in the world by the International Sky Association, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the nighttime environment.
Tierra Del Sol
Julian
Located in southeastern San Diego County is the Tierra Del Sol observing site. Established by the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA), the site is home to monthly star parties that are open to the public. Star parties offer visitors the opportunity to observe the sky through professional telescopes, and receive guided viewings from experienced astronomers. Learn more at www.sdaa.org.
Primarily known for its apple orchards, this quaint mountain town actually has night skies dark enough to host the SDAA's annual Julian StarFest each summer. This spring, you can admire and explore their starry skies by checking out nearby campgrounds or parks. If you don't feel like roughing it, the town also boasts its own astronomy-themed bed and breakfast.

Torrey Pines State Reserve While you won't see as many stars from Torrey Pines State Reserve, just north of La Jolla, it offers darker skies than expected and doesn't require a road trip. The beach offers the perfect location to look up at the cosmos, complete with the sound of crashing waves. Torrey Pines stays open until 11 p.m., and since it won't be peak visiting hours, catching road-side parking should be a cinch.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Real Estate Matters
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE REAL ESTATE MARKET IN 2016 by SCOTT VOAK
S
an Diego County entered the New Year with the lowest inventory of homes for sale in over 10 years. As of mid-February, that situation remains the same. In San Diego County, the Inland Corridor, and the individual zip codes of the Poway Unified School District, there are fewer homes on the market than any time since early 2004. And, while the new developments in Del Sur and along Black Mountain Ranch are adding more homes for sale, it isn’t any more than developers were selling in 4S Ranch back in 2004, so inventory is really at a decade low. The next question is, “If inventory is the lowest since 2004, why isn’t the market surging higher like it was then?” The answer is twofold: There are not as many buyers and the buyers that are in the market are a lot more cautious than in 2004. Back in 2004, loan requirements were a lot looser and people were buying multiple homes as speculative investments. Now, qualification standards are higher and buyers have lived through the bubble – they are a lot more cautious. The flipside is, at least to date, the falling stock market has not impacted local real estate. The danger here is that people looking to purchase might see their cash fall below down payment requirements. Talking to other agents and escrow officers, this is a big concern, but has not happened in any significant numbers so far. It goes without saying (or should anyway) that if you are looking for a home, the money you plan to use for a down payment should not be in any volatile investment.
For the balance of the year (at least through summer), I think most all factors that affect the market point to a firm market with slowly advancing prices. The number of sales will continue to be lower, which is bad for those associated with the industry, but homeowners should do well and buyers will be able to find deals here and there if they are willing to be flexible with their requirements.

by AMELIA CECCHETTO special to 92127 Magazine
Springing Into Action
A
longside blossoming trees and budding flowers, Nighthawks are springing into action within our community and across the globe. Del Norte even has a network to aid students in helping each other achieve academic success. Say WHAT? The Writing Help and Tutoring Club can be the ideal way for students with a knack for sentence structure help others ace their freshman year Romeo and Juliet essay. Sahba Mobini, a leading role in the WHAT center, has commented, “We get to create relationships between upperclassmen tutors, and upper/underclassmen tutees.” Sahba added that the center “gives the student looking for help a sense of security” working with someone who was in their shoes not too long ago.
82 • 92127Magazine.com • March | April 2016
Nighthawks also have the opportunity to spread their wings off campus. The abundance of clubs provides students with pathways towards impacting the community. The Del Norte Smiles for Senior Citizens club visits senior centers to chat, dine, and even play music for residents, providing them with a friend and a smile. Students are finding volunteer opportunities through flyers around the neighborhood, religious institutions or affiliations, and good old word of mouth! Whether it’s a trip to Panama or helping out at a local hospital, Del Norte’s students are making a wholehearted difference. If you’re a Nighthawk with uncommon interests, keep in mind Milton Berle’s famous
quote: “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” Sarah Gieseke, a senior interested in Costume Fashion and Design, volunteers at the San Diego Opera, and only acquired that opportunity through being proactive and sending an email right to the head of marketing. So don’t wait for the perfect volunteering opportunity to fall into your lap, find it! Let your passions drive you towards making a difference.
