It’s Boat Time

I

’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. Honoring Larry

LOCAL FOUNDATION KEEPS LARRY HIMMEL’S LEGACY ALIVE

T

he Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation continues to honor the memory of the late Larry Himmel, longtime KFMB/Channel 8 reporter, television broadcaster, San Diego personality, and 92127 resident, who passed away in 2014 after battling cancer. Larry believed that his purpose in life was to “make people feel better about the place they call home,” by connecting with people in the community and sharing their stories through the news. “My dad went all over San Diego and it felt like he was everyone’s neighbor,” said Larry’s son Miles Himmel. “We are just trying to continue that.” The foundation works to provide support and resources to deserving organizations and individuals in the spirit of Larry’s connection with the communities and people of San Diego County. Past projects include bringing Christmas gifts to homeless children at Interfaith Community Services, building a sandbox for children at Highland Ranch Elementary School in Poway, handing out free roses to friends and strangers on Valentine’s Day, and sponsoring a trip to SeaWorld for local kids, among others. “It’s awesome because we are a hands-on organization and we encourage everyone to be part of Larry’s Neighborhood!” Miles said.

14 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2017

Through each of these community efforts, Miles meets people whose lives were influenced by his father. “They have these vivid memories of my dad on TV or coming to an event they were at,” he said. “I don’t think I realized the impact he made until we started the foundation.” In September the foundation will host its first big fundraising event, a concert with local bands at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. One hundred percent of all donations the foundation receives goes back into the community. “We want to continue to help people all around the community,” Miles affirmed. For more information about the foundation or to learn about how to get involved visit www.larryhimmelfoundation.org. 

Softball Phenom! Angela Ramos Is a Star On and Off the Softball Field by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Spark Photography

L

ocal eighth grader Angela Ramos has an amazing passion for softball. She was recently nominated as one of the top 100 softball athletes in the nation by United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA). “I am blessed to have been selected to be one of the USSSA Select 30 from those top 100 athletes. I received a ‘Superbowllike’ ring for that achievement. I am so proud to say that I am one of the products of 4S Ranch Softball League,” revealed Angela, who plays shortstop, third base, and outfield. She is currently playing with Athletics Mercado travel softball team. According to Angela, this organization is helping her get noticed by college recruiters. Angela hopes to receive a college scholarship for softball and is leaning toward becoming a student athlete at UCLA or UCSD. “It would be awesome to study to become an anesthesiologist at one of these schools while also being a part of their softball team,” stated Angela.

Woman of the Year

LOCAL SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN’S ADVOCATE HONORED

A

ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored Terri Colachis as the 2017 Woman of the Year for the 77th Assembly District in recognition of her dedication and volunteer work to benefit developmentally disabled children in the community. Terri is the board chair of San Diego-Imperial Counties Developmental Services, Inc., an organization that works with the Department of Developmental Services in helping people with developmental disabilities obtain improved living conditions. She is also the president of the Association of Regional Center Agencies, representing the 21 independent, nonprofit California Regional Centers which advocate on behalf of and provide necessary services to 300,000 people with developmental disabilities across the state.

Terri and her husband Gus have lived in the 77th Assembly District for over 32 years. Terri’s daughter Shea, one of her six children, was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old and is non-verbal. Her personal experience with a developmental disability inspired her to dedicate her life to help families in similar situations. “Terri is an exemplary volunteer and a devoted parent to her daughter Shea,” said Assemblymember Maienschein. “Her passionate support of those who are often overlooked and would otherwise have no voice in society is commendable.” Established in 1987 to help commemorate Women’s History Month, the Woman of the Year honor has become an annual tradition as part of the State Assembly’s efforts to celebrate California’s extraordinary women. Honorees are presented with a framed certificate from the State Assembly recognizing their outstanding contributions. 

FROM THE DENTIST

ATHLETIC MOUTHGUARDS Dental injuries are a common consequence of collision or contact sports and recreational activities. Participants of all ages, genders, and skill levels are at risk of sustaining dental injuries at organized and unorganized, recreational, and competitive levels. Obvious sports requiring mouthguards would include football, boxing, and wrestling. Dental injuries are prevalent, however, in many other sports including basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, and gymnastics to name a few. The habit of wearing a mouthguard can be established at an early age. The mouthguard should be worn during practices as well as during the game or competition. Since the size and shape of the mouth and dentition is constantly changing in the growing child, the mouthguard should be refitted at least yearly. A stable, nonchanging permanent dentition is obtained usually around 12 through 14 years of age. At this time, the mouthguard can be changed less frequently,

maybe every two years. Special modifications can be made to the mouthguard to allow children undergoing orthodontic care to continue mouthguard use. The medical and dental community supports the use of a well-fitted mouthguard as the best available device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports-related dental injuries. Mouthguards provide a resilient, protective surface to distribute and dissipate the force of impact, thereby minimizing the severity of traumatic injury to the teeth and surrounding tissue. The mouthguard must be adapted well to the individual so that it can be worn comfortably allowing for adequate retention of the appliance, as well as satisfactory oral function such as swallowing and breathing. The best mouthguard is the one worn during sport activities. Custom mouthguards are considered by many to be the most protective option due to individualized fit,

DR. CHRIS PHAM

however, other mouthguards can be effective if they fit adequately, are worn properly, and can be retained in place. Ask your dentist about mouthguards and their importance for anyone in your family involved in sports activities.

24 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2017

ince 2012, the Paterno-McMahon family has lived in Westwood, drawn to the schools, community, and proximity to activities. In fact, Stephanie and Mike are both alumni of Poway Unified School District. Stephanie graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School in 2000 and Mike went to Poway High School, graduating in 2002. Stephanie went on to earn her degree in business administration at Cal State San Marcos. While in school, she interned at Climatec, a building automation contractor in Poway, where she would eventually meet Mike. Today, Mike is a field installer and Stephanie is an account manager. “Mike installs the jobs that I sell, which makes for a fun family dynamic,” Stephanie said. The family enjoys participating in the activities around 92127. Their youngest, Annabella, is almost two years old, and will start the parent and me classes at the Westwood Club Preschool in the fall. Owen and Giovanni are active in the Rancho Bernardo Little League (RBLL) program. The RBLL and RB Girls Softball League have been an

important part of the Paterno family for many years. Stephanie’s father, Tom Paterno, who passed away suddenly in early 2017, was an active community member and coach with the organizations. Stephanie is also involved in promoting babywearing education in San Diego. She began volunteering as a babywearing educator in 2013, teaching parents and caregivers about the options available for baby carriers. Meanwhile, Mike enjoys teaching others about panning for gold. The family has a complete prospecting setup in the backyard. “If your kids ever want to learn about panning for gold, send them his way!” Stephanie said. Any season of the year, the whole family can often be found camping – winters in the desert and the rest of the year at Mt. Laguna. “We tend to go with large groups, and the kids have an absolute blast exploring the world around them,” Stephanie shared. Exploring in the outdoors is a trait the kids get from their dad, whose favorite activities range from metal detecting and fishing to surfing and mountain biking. “The guy really is a jack of all trades,” she acknowledged. Closer to home, the kids enjoy the Westwood Club’s summer camp programs and Mike spends time exploring Lake Hodges. Settling down in 92127 has proven to be the perfect fit for the Paterno-McMahon family. 

PESTO DEVILED EGGS

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

2 ½ 1 1 ¼

1 dozen eggs, hard cooked, cooled, and peeled ¼ cup spinach and basil pesto 6 tablespoons mayonnaise ½ teaspoon Kosher salt

ounces Parmesan, finely grated pound spinach, rough chop ounce fresh basil leaves clove garlic, peeled cup olive oil Juice of ½ lemon Kosher salt, to taste

DIRECTIONS 1.

DIRECTIONS 1. 2. 3.

In a food processor, pulse the garlic and the spinach to mince. Add the lemon juice, basil, and cheese, and process until smooth. Stream in the oil to emulsify, then season to taste.

2.

3. 4.

Cut the eggs in half, lengthwise. Separate the whites from the yolks, and arrange the whites on a platter or tray to serve on. Run egg yolks through the fine side of a box grater, or pulse in a food processor to turn into fine powder. Transfer to a mixing bowl and mix well with a rubber spatula to ensure the yolks are broken down and smooth. Add all other ingredients and mix together till smooth and well combined. Fit a pastry bag with your choice of star tip (or skip the tip and just use a zip-top baggie as a makeshift piping bag). Transfer egg mixture to pastry bag, then pipe about 1 ½ tablespoons of yolk mixture into each of the egg white halves.

Garnish as you’d like, with a sweet roasted red pepper coulis, some crispy onion strings, a chiffonade of fresh basil – whatever you like! Keep cold until ready to serve. MAKES: 24 pieces

DNHS competed against almost 30 local high schools, placing in every event, and making a landslide victory with a total of 380 points. “This success showed that the Science Olympiad is truly a team sport,” said Head Coaches Rui Zhang and Madhu Sakthivel. “It took months of practice from 86 students, 25 parent and student coaches, many volunteers, and huge support from our school administration.” OVMS competed against 117 teams from over 30 area middle schools. “The hard work and discipline of our students, combined with the dedication and support of our parents, coaches, and Oak Valley staff is what makes our program such a huge success,” said Head Coach Cass Kaminetz. Both DNHS and OVMS teams will advance to the Southern

California Science Olympiad State Competition at the California Institute of Technology on April 8. Science Olympiad is a nationwide competition that is designed to increase student interest in STEM fields and provide opportunities for students to develop their sportsmanship and leadership skills. Sauna Sensation is San Diego’s premier infrared sauna studio, empowering individuals, families, teams, and organizations with one of the most powerful, simple, and scientifically-proven means of enhancing performance, recovery, health, and wellness. While infrared sauna has exploded in popularity around the world among medical professionals, elite athletes and coaches, celebrities, and “bio hackers,” we are on a mission to upgrade as many lives as possible right here in 92127!

WHAT IS INFRARED SAUNA?

THE SCIENCE OF SAUNA

HOW CAN I TRY IT?

Unlike a traditional dry sauna, infrared sauna uses powerful light rays to heat up the body directly from the inside out. These are the same healthy rays of invisible light emitted by the sun. Inoculating our bodies with infrared light has a proven ability to heal and transform our bodies and minds.

During your 40-minute session in one of our private suites, you’ll experience a significant rise in blood flow and an immediate reduction in blood pressure, strengthening the heart and nourishing muscle tissue.

Unlike the traditional group sauna found in most gyms, infrared sauna is a private experience, tailored to the desired outcomes and objectives of each individual client.

The body responds to the beneficial “heat stress” created by infrared light in the sauna with a tidal wave of physiological and neurological benefits that are unmatched in by other common treatments, fitness and wellness protocols or other recovery modalities. It’s the ultimate experience for anyone looking to upgrade their human performance in a safe, efficient and very effective manner.

Infrared sauna is used around the world to treat many different conditions, but detoxification, weight loss, enhanced athletic recovery, pain relief, and stress relief are universal benefits to those who make infrared sauna a mainstay in their weekly health and wellness rituals. Penetrating one to two inches deep into the body, the light rays trigger a release of cellular-level toxins, which are emitted through an intense sweat. The finisher is an incredible endorphin rush as you step out of the sauna to your eucalyptus-infused cold wrap and the ultimate relaxation response.

Our clients are young and “less young” alike, from CEO’s, active duty military, and professional athletes to busy moms and those battling seriously debilitating health symptoms. With 12 private infrared sauna suites, a members-only lounge, and a complimentary hydration station with citrus and organic sea salt, we are privileged to empower those in the 92127 community with the power of infrared sauna! For more detailed information or to book your first session, please visit our website at www.saunasensation.com.

he Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary recently received the prestigious Thomas F. Carter Leadership Award, which recognizes extraordinary volunteer leaders and philanthropists that are dedicated to the patients and families at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The award was bestowed to the Rady family in 2015 and originally given to Thomas Carter himself in 2000 for his exceptional leadership. “Rady Children’s Auxiliary is proud and honored to receive the Thomas Carter Award,” said Auxiliary President Mary Reynolds. “The Auxiliary’s mission is to advocate for, educate about, and fundraise for Rady Children’s Hospital. We have fulfilled that mission for 64 years, raising $70 million and touching every corner of the hospital. To be recognized for that achievement is extremely gratifying.” The Auxiliary was established in 1953 as a way to promote the welfare of Rady Children’s Hospital. The group has not strayed from its original statement of purpose since then. The organization now consists of 23 units that span throughout San Diego and Riverside counties. In addition to supporting Rady Children’s programs and services, the Auxiliary has pledged to raise $2.5 million to establish the Auxiliary Endowment for Neuroscience at the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine. The endowment will help improve patient care by providing clinical genetics, DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, clinical trials, and cutting-edge research for children with neurological diseases and disorders. OVMS Fundraises for St. Baldrick’s Twenty-six students and staff at Oak Valley Middle School (OVMS) came together in March for their annual fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Teachers Jon Comford and Alyssa Dykes bravely volunteered to have their heads shaved by volunteers from Sport Clips in front of the school to raise awareness for cancer. Jon spearheaded the first fundraiser at OVMS four years ago as a result of his eighth grade students’ desire to help their sick classmate. Alyssa told the crowd that she was shaving her head in honor of her mother, who is currently battling breast cancer. Classrooms are competing to see who can raise the most money for the foundation. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity committed to funding research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives. PUSD Scores High on State Dashboard The California Department of Education recently released new evaluation rubrics and the California School Dashboard as a way to measure student performance and give a more comprehensive look at overall district and school performance. The rubrics, which will be rolled out gradually, analyze 10 indicators of student performance: graduation rates; English language arts and math; parent engagement; school climate; progress of English learners; college and career readiness; implementation of state standards; services, materials, and facilities; chronic absenteeism; and suspension rates. Poway Unified School District (PUSD) scored at the highest possible levels in several areas, including graduation rates and student performance in English language arts and math for third through eighth grade. PUSD also met the state target in reducing the number of students suspended during the year and in measuring how well English language learners are progressing. Full Dashboard results will be reported this fall. Learn more at www.caschooldashboard.org.

In an effort to find a way for the entire Design39Campus to connect, make new friends, and encourage kindness while engaging student minds and bodies, Coach Shannon Shimansky created #MixItUpD39. A passionate physical education and athletic safety expert with a love for dance and music, Shannon exposes students to all genres of music and rhythms, letting them see visually how it can be remixed and recreated into something new. Children are allowed to move and dance freely, play sports on the playground, and have fun together. #MixItUpD39 is held on Wednesdays and Fridays during lunchtime. Coach Shannon even noticed that the students have been exhibiting even more empathy and kindness towards each other as a result of the program. #MixItUpD39 is in line with Design39Campus’ goal of encouraging students not to fear failure, embrace technology, and try new things. New Tenants at Del Sur Town Center Over 130 people attended the Scripps Ranch launch party to announce the formation of BE PRESENT, a nonprofit foundation in memory of Kirsten Westerman, a 2013 graduate of Del Norte High School who lost her battle with leukemia at the age of 20. Kirsten’s experience as a young adult with cancer showed how important the presence of a friend or family member is to the healing process. “When someone you love is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, you find yourself stressing about saying the right thing, bringing the right thing, or staying strong,” said Kirsten’s friends and BE PRESENT Co-founders Brianna Matias, Kelly Watson, and Jordann Phillips, “but what you learn is that there is strength and power in presence.” BE PRESENT is being established to raise awareness about the importance of the support network to this age group, and seeks to improve the journey of young adults with cancer by educating and empowering friends and families to be present in meaningful ways. According to Dr. Mandeep Walia, a large part of the center’s integrated approach is exploring detailed family and personal history, the circumstances surrounding the emergence of symptoms, and experiences with other healthcare providers. “What we know in the medical community is that one illness often leads to another and another. If we get to

the core causality, we can treat the patient instead of the illness. With the right tools and information, we can identify diseases years before their symptoms become obvious. This is why I do what I do for a living because living is the goal,” revealed Dr. Walia. Dr. Walia is the center’s clinic director, wellness consultant, and chiropractor. She earned her bachelor’s and Master of SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

Dr. Jeremy LaMotte, the medical director of the center, is board certified in family medicine and has specialized training in functional medicine, which looks at the interactions among genetic and environmental lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and chronic disease. Both healthcare professionals are proud to have served the community since 2011. Dr. Walia, Dr. LaMotte, and the rest of the center’s professional team provide patients pain relief without the use of drugs or surgery. Using a combination of conservative therapies such as natural medical treatment, physical therapy, and chiropractic, the center treats the root cause of pain, offerering diagnosis and treatment for patients who want to stay pain-free naturally. “We uncover the underlying causes of a patient’s health problem through careful history taking, physical examination, and laboratory testing. Once we have the results, we design an individual treatment plan – DR. SAN DIEGO FORCE FC S

an Diego Force Futbol Club (SD Force FC) Camps offer the exciting opportunity to experience specialized, intensive soccer training focusing on the technical, tactical, and physical demands of the game. The camps are geared toward players ages 4 to 16 who have a passion for the game and wish to enhance their technical individual skills and improve their ability to freely express themselves with the ball. Training is led by the SD Force FC technical directors of coaching – Jose Ocampo (Director); Adrian Ocampo (Assistant Director – Girls); and Paul Currie (Assistant Director – Boys) – and the rest of the coaching staff. The technical coaching staff has a combined 70-plus years of coaching experience varying from youth competitive soccer all the way to the semi-professional soccer levels. In youth soccer, the technical directors, along with their coaching staff, bring several years of experience and success in high-level soccer leagues such as Elite Clubs National League (ECNL); Academy; and several Cal South State Championships. The brand of soccer all of the coaches teach is a “Tiki Taka” style of play (quick, short-distance passing) coupled with promoting individual creativity with the ball at the player’s feet. This same method is applied to all youth teams during the camps. These camps provide players a fun environment to learn, discover new techniques that improve confidence, champion the acquired skills, and work as a team. These skills will give each player the opportunity for success at any level of soccer and give them the added benefit of building lifelong friendships. Camps will begin in April 2017! Young players learn the fundamentals with state-ofthe-art equipment – hitting and throwing nets, baseball and softball pitching machines, portable pitching mounds, a 60 by 15-foot batting cage, and more. Every afternoon is a chance to put those fundamentals into practice with daily live games. The team spirit and camaraderie solidify the experience. “The players and families look forward to summer camp every year, and it’s a big reunion of players, friends, families, and coaches,” said Coach Kurtis. “It’s amazing to see the kids’ growth each summer as they move up in divisions.” As Brad Ausmus, Manager of the Detroit Tigers, put it, “Coach Kurtis teaches each student valuable fundamental work that connects them to the game and creates super confidence in all as they learn under him. OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS N

ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates as a licensed, organized San Diego camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. This summer is the time to make that happen before repeating the same pattern next school year. “When learning is difficult or homework is a battlefield, then there may be an unidentified weakness in one or more of the underlying learning skills,” stated Maria Bagby, Executive Director of the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC), an organization renowned for its intensive therapeutic approach to fixing learning problems. “That can change. We do that every day.” TLC does much more than literacy. They have become renowned for the results they get with fixing the challenges related to ADHD, auditory processing deficits, executive function, as well as reading and writing skills. These problems don’t fix themselves. How does it work? TLC plans everything they do to meet each individual need through one-on-one therapeutic programming and through small group offerings when appropriate. Why not take advantage of the summer months to change the patterns of last year? eciding where to start a profile on Gulsum Rustemoglu is a difficult task – from her childhood in Istanbul to marathon running to her two master’s degrees and small business. She is the first to admit her workaholic tendencies: “I love working and producing projects and developing new ideas on a constant basis.” Gulsum arrived in San Diego in 1998 to earn her master’s degree in English and Comparative Language at SDSU. She eventually earned her second degree in City and Urban Planning. At SDSU she met her husband, Ali. Today, they live in 4S Ranch and have two children, Jayda and Derin. Growing up in Turkey, Gulsum never had the opportunity to pursue running as a sport; it just wasn’t part of the culture. In November 2011, at the age of 38, Gulsum saw a banner in downtown San Diego proclaiming “Run for the Hungry” and was inspired to be part of the solution. She signed up for the 10K race and, without training, finished. “Even though I was not able to walk three days afterwards, a new adventure started for me that day,” she shared. She went on to run several more 10Ks and half marathons but never committed to a training schedule until she finished the San Diego Rock n’ Roll marathon. Her new goal was to finish the New York Marathon in 2015 and then the six World Marathon Majors (New York, Boston, London, Tokyo, Berlin, and Chicago) by 2017. Gulsum is right on schedule, culminating in Chicago this October. Gulsum’s running is inspiring runners half a world away in her native Turkey through a virtual running community. “Our running club grew into over 2,200 active runners,” she shared. “I became a role model for many of my Turkish runner moms and friends who want to start running but not knowing where to start.” This work helped her earn a charity bib number at the Boston Marathon. She is representing the organization Fearless 261, which honors the first woman Name: to run Boston, Katherine Switzer, by empowering women across the world Profession: through running and sports. Gulsum’s ambitions are not slowing down. In fact, she will be speeding up Community: and hopes to run a qualifying time for Boston by age 50. In the meantime, she is Hobbies: ready to start another small business – KD Running, creating running products, Favorite Local Spots: offering world running tours, and directing a major race. 

The children first took part in an activity circuit, where they rotated around the gym playing games, jumping rope, and doing other exercises. Afterwards, they were treated to healthy yogurt parfaits. The campaign raises funds to help BGCGSD continue its healthy lifestyle programs across all branches. The club raised over $177,000, surpassing its goal for the year! Learn more at www.sdyouth.org. 

Anne, a Certified Negotiation Expert, works with Real Estate Partner Marcus Schreiber, Buyer’s Agent Ron Kaufmann, and Office Manager Jean Culpeper. “Our results are driven by our team’s desire to give our clients confidence,” explained Anne, “along with peace of mind and empowerment through clear and consistent communication.” They work in partnership with James Feldman for mortgage and refinancing needs. Among praises the team has received, the Berry family wrote, “Anne and the entire team were awesome! Truly made this a simple, successful, and stress-free experience.” 86 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2017

Anne is a San Diego native (Valhalla High) and graduated from UC San Diego with a BA in Sociology. She received her MA in Teaching from UA Southeast Juneau. Her husband, Marcus, recently retired from the City of San Diego Lifeguard Service. He will be transitioning into the business in 2017 as the marketing partner. Their children, Sophie and Finn, attend Del Sur Elementary. When Anne sold her first home in Alaska and bought her second home in Rolando, the real estate process fascinated her, but she returned to teaching. After her first child was born, Anne ran several fitness businesses with locally based Fit4Mom Franchise and Corporation, and later directed at the corporate level. This gave her the confidence to transition into real estate when the time was right. Glimpsing into Anne’s childhood, it’s clear that excelling in sports and competitive swimming helped shape her drive. She credits the discipline of being a long-distance athlete for preparing her well for business. “Real estate is, and will always be, a fantastic place to invest money,” shared Anne, “especially where we all live, work, and play.” She advises prospective clients to set a goal. Research the right professionals. The Anne Schreiber Homes team will be there from A to Z,

helping families, couples, retirees, first and seasoned home sellers and buyers all to achieve their version of the American Dream. 

Inventory at a Record Low – Why It’s Not A Bubble by SCOTT VOAK

M

arch opened with fewer homes for sale in San Diego than we had in March of 2004, which was the low point in inventory for the bubble. As inventory continues to fall, competition is heating up among buyers and prices are finally starting to move up. Last August, Keller Williams co-founder Gary Williams and some of his top local agents warned of a shift in the market and a cooling off. I disagreed for a number of reasons. Now that the market is continuing to accelerate, I am starting to hear people talk about a bubble. Once again, I’m going to disagree. We may cool off later this year, but it won’t be anything like a bubble. When a bubble bursts, prices collapse. Outside of a major world event, that will only happen with a dramatic simultaneous increase in supply and reduction in demand. While we could easily see a reduction in demand as prices push affordability out of reach, I believe any reduction in demand would be temporary and would reverse with a small correction in prices. I think a continuing shortage in supply is what will prevent a bubble from forming. With the amount of equity people have and the favorable interest rates people have locked in, I don’t see panic selling on our horizon. But what about the ability to move up? Unfortunately for many, I am seeing that opportunity constrained by the current market. As prices and interest rates

Address

have risen, homeowners are finding themselves with increased equity, but without the ability to qualify for a larger loan. So, someone who put $100K down on a $500K house and finds the house worth $650K now has $250K in equity. But as rates have gone from the low 3% range to the low 4% range, they can’t qualify for a larger loan than they now have, and so they are stuck in their current home. This is the main reason we are seeing lower inventory today and the reason inventory will stay tight and prices will hold firm throughout this economic cycle. 

PUSD Teacher of the Year

DEL NORTE TEACHER IS ONE OF THREE TO RECEIVE DISTRICT HONORS

D

el Norte High School computer science teacher Mark Lantsberger was recently selected as one of the three 2017 District Teachers of the Year. A committee of district and site representatives selected the PUSD Teachers of the Year based on criteria which included: innovations inside the classroom, contributions to their schools and the district, and commitment to their students. Susan Michelena and Keith Opstad were the other two Teachers of the Year. Mark has been teaching for 20 years. He developed his computer science curriculum from scratch, giving students insight and a deeper understanding of both C and JAVA programming languages. His computer science club students developed an app that was recognized by Apple, and he also advises a new Girls in Computing Club to encourage more young women to pursue computer science. In addition to coding, Mark incorporates current social and

ethical topics related to computer science into his classes, telling stories and acting out abstract concepts in entertaining ways to aid his students’ understanding. Perhaps his greatest achievements are the long-term mentoring relationships he has developed with his students into adulthood. Some of his former students now work at Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, and have even become CEOs of their own software companies. “Congratulations to our three teachers of the year!” said Acting Superintendent Dr. Mel Robertson. “It is evident from their passion and expertise that they are inspiring their students each day to grow, learn, and develop their own passions. They truly represent all the incredible teachers we have throughout our school district.” All three teachers will be submitted for consideration for County Teacher of the Year. AN AFTERNOON

BY THE SEA

Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

I

f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village! 
