Let’s Rock On!
A
Derrick Breaux Publisher
s many of you know, I spent a great deal of my childhood in Texas. I have fond memories of family evenings with a close friend digging into classic country and southern rock songs with nothing more than his deep voice, guitar, and love of entertaining. He was always reluctant to play at first, but after the required nudges, he coincidentally would have his guitar in the truck and treat everyone to a wonderful experience that is hard to match. My wife and I recently opened the door to music in the Breaux household by purchasing a guitar for our son and a piano for our youngest daughter. Each kid chose their own instrument. Microphones, amps, and lots of wires later, we were geared up for them to make some music. So, we found a great music instructor for weekly lessons. It was slowgoing at first. While I tried offering words of wisdom (as if I had a clue) about the learning curve and ultimate satisfaction of completing their first song, our kids reluctantly pushed on. Then it happened. Our son learned the chords and vocals to an entire song – Justin Beiber’s Love Yourself. He began playing it more. He tested it out in front of his friends, eventually graduating to open mic nights at local eateries, as well as small festival performances set up by his instructor. Not wanting to be a one-song performer, my son is pushing hard to learn more songs for future shows. I think he’s caught the performing bug. Our daughter is close behind, even though she is still a little unsure about the performance part. Taking things one step further, I used an iPad (and more wires) to turn our living room into a karaoke studio. Okay, so I just made that sound better than it really is, but it’s a cool setup nonetheless. What my wife and I witnessed after was nothing short of amazing. Our kids and their friends have been singing just about every song you can think of. They sing some seriously, while others are simply for kicks. The most important thing is that they are laughing, dancing, and having a great time. I’m glad we left our bubble and opened a new opportunity for them. Even if the ultimate outcome is just for them to be able to pick up an instrument and make close friends and family feel good on a relaxing evening in the backyard – it’s worth it. Thanks for reading 92127 Magazine. Be sure to reach out to our advertising partners and let them know you saw them in the magazine.

Creating Opportunities
TURTLEBACK ELEMENTARY RECEIVES EDUCATION GRANT
T
urtleback Elementary School recently received a $5,000 Barona Education Grant from the Barona Band of Mission Indians. The school will use the grant to establish a maker space, or learning area, to provide students an opportunity to explore, create, build, design, problem solve, collaborate, and think critically. “With the creation of this custom learning space, Turtleback Elementary School will be at the forefront of a new trend in education,” said Chairman of the Barona Band of Mission Indians Clifford LaChappa. The maker space will consist of a Lego wall, starter kits and materials, two Ozobot classroom kits, five Educator Executive LittleBits Premium Kits, and a STEAM Maker Station. More than one-fifth of Turtleback’s students speak English as a second language. Maker space learning environments are shown to transcend all language barriers, allowing every student a chance to

participate, be engaged, and be successful in the classroom. The space is also accessible and suited to the learning styles of students with Autism, ADD, and ADHD. “We know that the jobs of the future for our students do not yet exist, so we must allow them opportunities to become great thinkers and explore learning without being told what to learn,” said Principal Ann Auten. “The maker space is designed to provide an uncommonly rare environment for students to personalize their learning and discover why they need to learn.” The Barona Education Grant program has awarded over $2.9 million to California schools since its inception in 2006, equipping 587 schools with hundreds of computers, thousands of books, iPads, computer software programs, and various other technologies and school supplies. Soumya Kuruvila Takes Action for Positive Change by LINDA FRABL | photo by Spark Photography
D
el Norte High School senior Soumya Kuruvila is undeniably accomplished. She earned the Distinguished Young Woman of Inland San Diego 2017 title from the national scholarship program, and even represented her school at the 2016 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference. Soumya’s vast success stems from taking action for positive change when she sees something that needs to be done. As the founder and president of the Women Leadership Club, for example, Soumya is especially cognizant of helping other women realize their full potential. She elaborated, “As a club, we empower ourselves by listening to the stories of other successful women, volunteering at local events, and teaching leadership lessons at middle and elementary schools. Throughout this process, we are constantly given opportunities

to sharpen our leadership abilities and seek different ways to be involved in our community.” Surprisingly, Soumya wasn’t always the emblem of outer confidence. She used to be painfully shy, and somehow ran for class president at age 12 although scared about giving a public speech. The experience, however, emboldened her. Soumya recalled, “I walked out on the stage terrified, yet amazed that I had the ability to shape and deliver a message in a way that could be impactful. That is how I fell in love with speech.” Now Soumya is the president of her school’s speech and debate team, and was instrumental in boosting its presence among the student body. She said, “I encouraged others to try speech. I know that my most important job is creating an environment where we support each other.” In addition, Soumya is on her school’s varsity tennis team, and is on her school’s Link Crew, easing the transition for high school freshmen. A huge fan of computer science, Soumya also interned at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. While logging over 250 hours at the Center, Soumya helped develop Grace’s Coding Club, which aims to encourage girls to pursue careers in computer science. Never one to complain about her extensive hours volunteering, Soumya instead welcomes the opportunity. She exclaimed, “While you are ‘giving back,’ you are receiving so much more. When you volunteer, you practice your communication skills, gain experience, and do something meaningful, which is arguably one of the best feelings you can experience.” Spoken like a true leader.

M
aranatha Christian High School (MCHS) students Antonio Partida and Jessica Xu were among approximately 165 students from San Diego who were named National Merit semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Antonio and Jessica are the founders and co-editors of the popular student newspaper ‘Natha News, which recently won first place at the San Diego County Fair student exhibit after competing against a variety of larger schools throughout the county. “Having two National Merit semifinalists from a school our size is pretty awesome,” said MCHS College and Career Advisor Joe Mireles. “California has one of the highest required scores to qualify for this already competitive program, so having two of our own selected is incredibly humbling.” Antonio and Jessica will now have the opportunity to compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit scholarships worth $33 million. Over 1.5 million juniors entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT test. The nationwide pool of 16,000 semifinalists includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. “It comes as no surprise to anyone on our campus that these two exceptional individuals would be named as National Merit semifinalists,” said MCHS Principal Pete Plotnik. “Both are integrally involved in a variety of leadership roles where their gifts and talents are routinely demonstrated in academics, arts, and athletics. We are extremely proud of their strong work ethic, perseverance, and strength of character – our community celebrates their selection for further consideration as finalists.” Learn more about the National Merit scholarships at www.nationalmerit.org.

FROM THE DENTIST
KIDS AND BRACES You’ve been so diligent at getting your kids’ teeth healthy and cavity free. Now it’s time for braces. How do we keep that same healthy smile through orthodontic treatment? Are those who go through orthodontia at more risk for decay? Gum problems? Unfortunately, yes. With the increased number of places that food can get trapped, it can present a higher risk scenario. Add in flossing and braces and you have a barrier that is hard for many to cross. Here are a few great steps for a great smile with braces: BRUSH. Find the right brush for your child. Manual, electric, music playing, self-timed – there are so many options! The very best toothbrush is the one that they’ll use. Key factors in selecting the perfect brush are right size of toothbrush head for their mouth, soft bristled and easy to use. For maximum effectiveness, time and technique are key. Braces require really no more than two minutes of brushing with the right technique.
Whether the toothbrush is electric or not, point the bristles towards the gum line and clean in small looping circles. FLOSS. There are some areas that brushing can’t even get to. Enter flossing! It will take some time and practice, but certain products make light work of this necessary skill. There are specialized flossers, floss threaders, floss that is segmented to allow for different orthodontic scenarios and now the WaterPik. Cleaning the in-betweens is vital to healthy enamel and gums during braces. RINSE. The easiest step of all. Make sure to include this in the daily routine. Various products out there work well and can be used multiple times every day. Look for rinses that are “anticavity” or help with gingivitis. Pick a flavor that your child likes to increase their use of it. A minute or two will do wonders for one last final hygiene home run.
DR. SPENCER MAUSETH
REPEAT. Getting into the habit while it’s hard will pay off huge dividends for years to come! Everyone’s risk for developing dental disease is different. This makes visiting the dentist key. They will come up with a customized plan of plaque attack and gear the right regimen for that perfect smile. Some may require more frequent cleanings, but be sure that it’s disease prevention that will prevail!
Your child’s healthy, beautiful smile means everything to us! We Offer...

riginally drawn to 4S Ranch for the beautiful landscaping, new homes, strong community, and good schools, Chris and Amy Rothermel have loved their home in 92127 for many reasons over the last decade. The couple and their three sons enjoy the convenience of walking to school, baseball games, church, and grocery stores. “We feel very lucky to have our 4S Ranch bubble,” Chris and Amy shared. Chris and Amy are both business owners, which allows them the flexibility to participate fully in their sons’ lives. Chris owns Aquaguard Pool Fences, building

swimming pool fences in San Diego, Riverside, and Orange County. “He loves to be home by the time the boys get home from school to help with homework and driving the kids around to sports activities in the evenings,” Amy said. As the financial director and owner of a drug and alcohol treatment facility, Amy’s schedule also provides her the opportunity to spend time with the boys when they are not in school. Their three sons, Collin, Gavin, and Dylan, love the active lifestyle of 92127. Collin is an eighth grader at Oak Valley Middle School. He plays travel baseball with RB Warriors and football with Del Norte Nighthawks. Outside of school and sports, Collin can be found hanging out with his friends from school and church. Gavin and Dylan are both students at Stone Ranch Elementary, where Amy volunteers in the boys’ classrooms. “The youngest two love Legos, building forts, climbing trees, and basically doing anything outside,” Amy explained. All the boys are involved with baseball, football, and lacrosse. Chris volunteers his time coaching for the 4S Ranch Little League. Family time for the Rothermals incorporates their love for travel. “Our favorite destinations are by the water since we love boating, scuba diving, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and just being near the ocean or lakes,” Amy and Chris said. The Rothermels house is typically full of friends and neighbors. “Our home is often the neighborhood ‘hub’ and you can expect to find numerous bikes and scooters in our front yard, kids jumping on the trampoline, swimming in the pool, or digging for bugs in the front yard,” Amy shared. “We love it that way and wouldn’t have it any other way.”

WELLNESS PROFILE
Hands-On Treatment ASIS Physical Therapy Treats Patients Using an Advanced, Individualized Approach to Prove “Better Is Just the Beginning”
S
ince 2008, ASIS Physical Therapy has been providing a more individualized approach to physical therapy. Founder Vanessa Jackson, P.T., D.P.T., started ASIS physical therapy after experiencing differing quality of treatments for patients based only on different insurance plans, along with a high-volume demand, which didn’t allow her to give all of her energy and care to each patient. Vanessa’s ethics demanded something better. Co-owner Dr. Kevin Pansky explained, “She believed that she wanted to treat her patients just as she would her own family, and from this ASIS was born.” With an innovative and creative approach to problem solving patients’ unique challenges, ASIS utilizes a researchbased hands-on therapy approach coupled with specific exercise prescription to help patients “feel the difference” every single session. The original name of the practice read Individualized Service, Innovative Solutions, or ISIS – so to avoid confusion, the name was recently adjusted and re-branded as Advanced Service, Innovative Solutions, or ASIS which speaks to their core values. Since no two injuries are the same, no protocols or group therapy are ever utilized here, and each patient receives one-onone, hands-on, individualized therapeutic techniques every session. “Most clinics simply

do exercises and stretching,” said Dr. Pansky, “which is not effective for most injuries and delays healing by weeks and sometimes months.” ASIS requires top-tier education for all their Physical Therapists – all P.T.s are Doctors of Physical Therapy – and doesn’t use P.T. assistants. ASIS staff complete more than double the required amount of continuing education every year. While many clinics use shortened evaluations, an evaluation at ASIS goes 90 minutes-plus to really uncover the root of the problem. Where other clinics typically see more than one patient concurrently, ASIS treats only one at a time – two per hour maximum. “We believe in quality over quantity,” said Dr. Pansky, “which is why our methods are tried and true, and people travel from long distances to get treatment at our facilities.” Treating all age groups, ASIS is great for pain relief, improving function such as sports performance, balance, strength, mobility, and stamina. New patients get in for treatment quickly, and the front desk and management teams work seamlessly together to facilitate the transition from scheduling to evaluating to healing. Personal attention is given to every aspect of the business to ultimately give topnotch, excellent patient care. “Every patient is valued, and making sure you get in and treated

in a timely, harmonious fashion is the goal!” said Clinic Manager Melodie Nungesser. If you want treatment in a place that is positive, energetic, comfortable, professional, and fun, look to ASIS for your physical therapy needs.

Over the last few months, however, the group has been hard at work spreading their message even further by visiting local schools and libraries and introducing financial literacy concepts to students through fun games and activities. For fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, the FinLit group holds a lesson that allows students to create their own products and businesses and teaches them how to properly earn, save, and budget their money. FinLit is currently working on expanding the online curriculum for high schoolers, as well as partnering with business and investing clubs to help spread awareness of the cause. s Del Norte High School grows and develops, its performing arts department has grown too. Teachers focus on fostering dedication and passion along with the fundamentals, and letting students take ownership of their artistic goals.
Students have a wide world of opportunities to explore, whether in class or in extracurricular programs. Between plays and musicals, jazz and marching band, choir and music theory, and so much more, there’s a path for every student who wants to find their voice and share it with an audience. Directors and teachers Stephanie DeYoung, Jennifer Kitelinger, and Keith Sattely were eager to share more with 92127 Magazine.

Q A &
with Stephanie DeYoung, THEATER DEPARTMENT HEAD
WHAT PERFORMING ARTS DISCIPLINE DO YOU TEACH IN? I teach theater arts at Del Norte. I am the head of the drama department and direct two of our three main-stage shows. The third is a student-directed, oneact festival. WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN TEACHING? I have been involved in theater since I was five years old and have worked semi-professionally in San Diego community theaters as an actress and production assistant. I pursued my passion at UCSD and got the opportunity to work at the La Jolla Playhouse. I also
attended graduate school at Emerson College in Boston, where I got to work with notable scholars in the field. I decided to get my M.A. in theater education so I could teach high school drama and keep the interest in arts education alive.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding part of my role is the opportunity to get to know the students more personally and help them grow as artists. The most challenging part is scheduling. I am a mother of two young children, so sometimes I struggle with the work/life balance. HOW HAS THEATER AT DNHS GROWN OR EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? Student anecdotes have led me to believe that the theater department was a tad chaotic until I arrived. I
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY RECENT PERFORMANCES? We just finished our fall production of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. It was a fun show and was wellreceived by the audience. It was exciting to watch the audience literally on the edge of their seats as the mystery unfolded. ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES THE COMMUNITY SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO? Up next is our winter musical: Bye, Bye, Birdie. We will be auditioning right before the Thanksgiving Break and will begin rehearsals right after the break. Our performances will be the first two weekends of February. HOW MANY PERFORMANCES DO YOU PUT ON A YEAR?
am now in my third year at Del Norte and I have enjoyed strengthening the program and watching it grow.

We put on three productions a year. Typically, a play in the fall, a musical in the winter, and a oneact festival in the spring. We have run the gamut from comedy to tragedy in our productions. IS THERE ANY WAY THE COMMUNITY CAN HELP SUPPORT THE PERFORMING ARTS AT DNHS? Donations are always greatly appreciated, as we function as a not-for-profit organization. All of the money we make on
shows goes directly back into the department, funding the next production. We also have received and appreciate donations of resources for our set (wood, paint, etc.) and costumes. Volunteer help is greatly appreciated as well! DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES OR EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR TIME AT DNHS? It is really hard to narrow down a favorite memory because I have thoroughly enjoyed working with all of my casts and crew. There are little inside jokes that happen within each show and the bonds I get to make with the students are unforgettable. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? WHAT ARE YOUR CLASSES CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I am excited to see how this department will grow in the future. As our productions continue to gain interest, I hope it will get students more interested in taking drama class. Each fall I have had a Drama 1 class and this winter I will be teaching Drama 1 as well as Drama 2-6 and Theatre Studies 7-8. I hope to eventually open up a technical theater class and eventually an AP theater course (which I heard is currently in development).

Q A &
with Jennifer Kitelinger, DIRECTOR OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
WHAT PERFORMING ARTS DISCIPLINE DO YOU TEACH IN? I am the director of instrumental music at Del Norte High School, teaching band, orchestra, and color guard. The instrumental music program includes marching band, concert band, wind ensemble, two jazz bands, winter drumline, color guard and winter guard, pep band (for basketball games), string orchestra, pit orchestra, and symphony orchestra. WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN TEACHING? I have my Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Music degree in wind band conducting from the University of North Texas, and I am currently ABD as a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind band conducting from the University of North Texas. My primary conducting teachers were professor Eugene Migliaro Corporon, professor Dennis Fisher, and Dr. Jack Stamp. I have taught music at all ages, kindergarten through the graduate school level, and I have found
that I truly enjoy teaching music at a more advanced level in the high school and watching high school students discover their passion for music through the band, orchestra, and color guard program. The students really start to come into their own at high school, and watching the transformation of the students from the freshman year to the senior year is always an amazing experience.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THIS DISCIPLINE AT DNHS? I started teaching at Del Norte in the second
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING? The most rewarding part of my job is to see the students become more passionate about music and dedicated to the performing groups and the friends that they make in those groups. The most challenging part of my job is the amount of time it takes to run a program like this and how much time it takes away from my own family.
year of the school in 2010-2011. The school opened up the previous year with a concert band and an orchestra, and because the school was new and small, those programs were small. When I was hired, I was tasked with starting the marching band, which also meant starting a color guard program. Over the years, we developed from a program that numbered around
70 students and two performing groups to over 200 students and 11 performing ensembles.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY RECENT PERFORMANCES? The marching band and color guard perform and compete every weekend now for seven weeks in the fall from October through November, as well as performing at all home football games (five Fridays this year). They also performed at the Poway Days Parade in September. The orchestra, combined concert and marching bands, and color

The Oak Valley Middle School Orchestra also performed at the concert and combined with the Del Norte High School String Orchestra to perform one selection together. ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES THE COMMUNITY SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO? We will have a Holiday Extravaganza concert on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Del Norte High School Performing Arts Center featuring the concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, color guard, string orchestra, and symphonic orchestra. Also, the marching band has been accepted to perform at Disneyland on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and
the orchestra was accepted to perform at California Adventure on Saturday, Dec. 10. HOW MANY PERFORMANCES DO YOU PUT ON A YEAR? With 11 performing groups, we have numerous performances throughout the year, which vary greatly based on what ensemble is performing. The marching band will usually have around 20 performances a year between parades, pep rallies, football games, and competitions. The concert groups – concert band, wind ensemble, string orchestra, and jazz band – will have three to five performances at Del Norte High School, then two festival performances at other high schools in the spring.
The color guard perform with the marching band in the fall, then will perform in six to eight winter guard competitions from January to April. The winter drumline will also compete in six to eight competitions from February to April. The basketball pep band will perform at approximately 10 home basketball games. The pit orchestra, which is part of the DNHS Musical, will have approximately seven to eight performances in February. IS THERE ANY WAY THE COMMUNITY CAN HELP SUPPORT THE PERFORMING ARTS AT DNHS? Yes! We have amazing kids, most of whom will participate in more than one of the ensembles. Some of the groups are classes,

but many of the groups are also extracurricular. The music programs (as well as arts in general) in the district do not receive much funding and the money that is spent to buy instruments, music, equipment, pay for tournament entry fees, and busing has to come from the parent booster groups. If we relied strictly on district budget money, we would have to cut back to two or three performing groups and only perform on campus. The arts are alive at DNHS and we have to find a way to fund this worthwhile endeavor! Can you imagine going through life without music or art? DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES OR EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR TIME AT DNHS? The marching band won third place in the Marching Band Championships last year (held in Downey, CA) and everyone in the stands was asking, “Who and where is Del Norte High School?” Of the 12 bands that qualified for championships in our division, only three of the
bands came from San Diego County. We were known that night as the Band That Came Out of Nowhere, and watching the kids end the night and the marching season with the highest finish in the history of the marching band was so exciting and satisfying.
Q A &
ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? WHAT ARE YOUR CLASSES CURRENTLY WORKING ON? The marching band and color guard’s field show this year is called Silk Road and features the music of Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov,
Caravan by Duke Ellington, and “Bacchanale” from Samson and Delilah by Camille Saint-Saëns. The orchestra and concert band are just transitioning from a recent concert and will be working on music for the Holiday Extravaganza concert in December.
with Keith Sattely, CHOIR DIRECTOR
WHAT PERFORMING ARTS DISCIPLINE DO YOU TEACH IN? Choir and AP Music Theory. WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN TEACHING? I knew during my own high school choir experiences that I wanted to impact students’ lives the same way mine had been so positively impacted. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING? Getting to witness the growth and development of each young artist – it’s such a privilege to be a part of their musical and overall development. The most challenging part is balancing my own professional and personal life outside of school with my role as a teacher. I want to give every area of my life my all.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THIS DISCIPLINE AT DNHS? Choir was the last elective added at DNHS – three years after the school opened! It has grown leaps and bounds over the past four years, with four different ensembles rehearsing during the school week. ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES THE COMMUNITY SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO? In January 2017, the chamber choir will present John Rutter’s “Magnificat” in tandem with the other four high school in PUSD with full orchestra. Also, this March, the DNHS Choir will travel to New York City to sing in Carnegie Hall! Exciting!
HOW MANY PERFORMANCES DO YOU PUT ON A YEAR? WHAT TYPE OF PRODUCTIONS DO YOU GENERALLY PUT ON? We put on three concerts at the school a trimester. In early November, the choirs presented “How Can I Keep from Singing,” a concert celebrating the power of music to bring people together, celebrate peace, and give us strength through times of adversity. IS THERE ANY WAY THE COMMUNITY CAN HELP SUPPORT THE PERFORMING ARTS AT DNHS? Come to our concerts! Donate towards
our programs! The choir program is entirely dependent on outside sources of funding. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES OR EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR TIME AT DNHS? Last June, the DNHS Choirs presented choral Evensong at St. Paul’s Cathedral downtown. It was a sublime experience for all involved.

In 2013, Frederica founded ScratchMyBelly.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving animals – mainly dogs – from high-kill shelters in Southern California and in Mexico. “ScratchMyBelly.org was created after volunteering and fostering for other rescues for a few years,” shared Frederica. “We wanted to be able to save animals without the screening criteria of breed, age, or medical condition.” The organization – which proudly saved 50 lives last year and has already exceeded that number in 2016 – not only rescues dogs from high-kill shelters and off the streets of Mexico, but also rescues animals coming from owner surrenders, hoarding cases, and strays. “Our ultimate goal is to provide the best opportunity to these often overlooked animals, to find a loving forever home,” said Frederica. “Many of them come into the rescue with huge medical bills, and we strive to find donations to help off-set all those vet care costs that can easily exceed thousands of dollars in just one pup.” ScratchMyBelly.org, Frederica explained, is always in need of volunteers. “Volunteers can help us at events, coordinate vet appointments, and transport.” She added, “Fosters are the golden foundation of our success with the placement of our pups. We provide the everything; they provide the love and care these pups deserve.” The organization has a few fundraisers coming up, including its Blanket for Shelter Animals campaign. “Many shelters are unable to provide blankets for the animals housed at their location,” said Frederica. “We ask the community to help us keep the animals warm by donating gently used blankets and towels.” The organization will also have a presence at the Santa Paws Event on Dec. 3, hosted by the San Diego Animal Support Foundation at the Grossmont Center in La Mesa from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. When asked about her biggest accomplishment, Frederica replied, “It's knowing that those pups have wonderful adopters, full of love and appreciation for them. As author Karen Davidson says, ‘Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.’”

ocated at the Northeast corner of Carmel Mountain and Black Mountain Roads, Carmel Mountain Dental Care (CMDC) was established in the early 1980s. In 2008, H. Jonathan Lee, DMD, acquired the practice upon retirement of the founding doctors. Prior to CMDC, Dr. Lee practiced dentistry in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, shortly after receiving his doctorate at Boston University. His love for San Diego started earlier during his undergraduate studies at UCSD. Dr. Lee had a vision to bring the small-town, relational dentistry he experienced back to San Diego, and Rancho Peñasquitos was the perfect fit. A feeling of small town hospitality is evident from the moment you walk in the office. New patients are always given a tour, hot and cold beverages are available during the short wait, and all of the treatment rooms are equipped with TVs, blankets, music, and coloring materials for younger visitors – or for any visitors who want to color! Dr. Lee’s patients seemed to appreciate his approach as CMDC has grown over the years. Patient Linda B. shared, “It’s tough to mix top-notch professionalism with warmth. Dr. Lee and his staff have pulled it off! This office makes going to the dentist a pleasure!” In 2015, Dr. Marisa Lee joined the growing practice to help maintain the high standard
of care and attention patients have come to expect. Dr. Lee and Dr. Marisa both rely on the rest of the CMDC team comprised of four dental assistants, six hygienists, and six office team members. An orthodontist (for braces) and endodontist (for root canals) are also available for patients. While the back office team is treating and educating patients about their oral health, the front office team is diligently scheduling appointments, and helping patients navigate the complexities of dental insurance and understand the costs of treatment. For those without insurance, CMDC is an exclusive provider of Quality Dental Plan, a dental savings plan which can provide all the necessary routine dental services for less than $300 per year (a family of four is only $880 per year) as well as significant discounts on additional treatment. Whether it’s taking the time to explain a treatment plan or calling a dental insurance company to verify benefits, Carmel Mountain Dental Care goes the extra mile for their patients and prospective patients. This is why so many in Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch, and neighboring communities consider Carmel Mountain Dental Care their family dentist. One of Dr. Lee’s goals for CMDC is to give back to the communities

which have accepted him so warmly over the years. CMDC sponsors the Rancho Peñasquitos and 4S Ranch Little Leagues, Rancho Family YMCA, and other local organizations. Dr. Lee expressed, “Carmel Mountain Dental Care is not just about treating teeth. We are caring people caring for people.”

ounded in 1972, Boulder OMS is the oldest and most established oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in Poway. Offering such services as dental implants, wisdom tooth extraction, corrective jaw surgery, Botox and filler, rhinoplasty, and dental aveolar surgery, Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert T. Gramins have a high standard of care and a track record of exceptional patient results. “Our motivation is to be the most trusted and respected oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in San Diego,” stated Kelly Zielinski, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Boulder OMS. So much so that the doctors – and their staff – voluntarily undergo an onsite review of policies and practices every two years to keep its Association for Ambulatory Health Care accreditation. “This is the highest level of certification and ensures we practice to the utmost standards of safety and patient care,” elaborated Zielinski. “Additionally, Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are one of a select few oral and maxillofacial surgeons licensed by the State of California to perform facial cosmetic procedures.” Dr. Lin attended the University of Illinois for his doctorate dental degree. In 1998, he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Northwestern University Medical Center. “Dr. Lin is extensively trained in orthognathic reconstructive jaw surgery, facial trauma surgery, cosmetic facial surgery, and advanced dental implant surgery,” stated Zielinski. “He practices the full and expanded scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.” Dr. Lin
is board certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has also served as a board director, vice president, and president for the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. “On the national level, Dr. Lin served as a state delegate for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and is actively involved to ensure that the specialty itself stays current and relevant to healthcare,” added Zielinski. Dr. Gramins graduated in 1998 from Northwestern University with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. “While in dental school, Dr. Gramins was awarded a United States Navy academic scholarship and was commissioned as an officer in the Dental Corps,” noted Zielinski. Following dental school, Dr. Gramins completed a general practice residency at Great Lakes Naval Hospital and fulfilled his military service in Southern California at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base. Later, he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, is Board Certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and was selected to sit on the Cosmetic Surgery Credentialing board for the State of California, for which he has also served as president. Both doctors are highly involved with local charities including The Oral Cancer Foundation, Las Patronas, The Ronald McDonald House, and The March of Dimes. Additionally, Boulder OMS has been selected as the Official Oral and Facial Surgery practice

of the San Diego Gulls for a second season. What makes the practice so successful, explained Zielinski, is not only the doctors’ commitment to the community but to each patient’s individual needs as well. “Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins take the time to understand a patient’s needs and offer services to deliver optimal results.”

It was a chance for the community to come together in recognition of the dedication and personal sacrifice demonstrated by these courageous first responders and public safety officers – including a tribute to San Diego Police Officer Jonathan “JD” DeGuzman, who lost his life during a pedestrian stop this past summer. Other honorees included lifeguards, paramedics, special agents, and investigators who have all gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve this community. Learn more at www.sdbusinesschamber.com.

or the past eight years, Christopher Lee has been training and competing in karate, and his hard work and commitment are paying off these days. The young Bernardo Springs resident has placed for three consecutive years at the USA National Karate Federation national competition. This year, he represented the U.S. at the 2016 Junior Pan American Karate Games in Ecuador. The trip to Ecuador was not the first international experience for the Del Norte High School freshman. Christopher, along with his team, traveled to Japan in 2013 and 2015. “The first week in Japan, we lived at the dojo where we trained every day for about six to eight hours,” he said. The experience included sleeping on Japanese futons and using the communal bath house. “The second week in Japan, we trained with the Japanese Junior Team at the Olympic Center in Tokyo.” Training began every morning with a 5 a.m. run. “I train to improve myself and to motivate my team,” he shared. “We support each other and push ourselves until we do our best.” When preparing for the national competition from March through July, Christopher commits three hours a day at least five days a week. The remainder of the year, his typical training

schedule is at least three days a week for two hours each day. This commitment to karate has helped Christopher through his recent diagnosis of alocepia areata, which causes hair loss. “Although this is a non-life threatening disease, it was a drastic change in my appearance,” he acknowledged. “The support of my karate team has been the most important factor in my success.” Christopher enjoys skateboarding and mountain biking the trails in Los Peñsaquitos Canyon Preserve with his parents. For the last two years, he has also participated in the Jack-O-Smash 5k Run to raise money for children with special needs. “We have a student at our dojo who trains karate even though he is in a wheelchair,” Christopher shared. “He is a great example that anyone can do karate.” Christopher is inspired by his sensei and appreciates the opportunities training and competition have given him. “It is rewarding to make friends, meet different people from all over the country and world and represent my country,” he shared. But this is not without its challenges “of long hours of training and getting all my homework done,” he acknowledged.

Should You Re-Evaluate Your San Diego Real Estate Investments? by SCOTT VOAK
I
am one of the few, if only, local real estate prognosticators that isn’t predicting a market fall. I don’t think we are in a bubble, and I think inventory is tight enough that by the time we get to St. Patrick’s Day, we could be talking about the surging real estate market. That said, I am still working with some of my own investors to sell investment property here and move the money via a 1031 Exchange to other areas. The appreciation we have seen in both rents and prices over the past few years makes me think that the values for rental property may not have much more room to move. Plus, by any measurement (cap rate, cash-on-cash return, ROI), San Diego isn’t a good place to maximize your rental income. Here’s an example of a change we are making for an existing client: Ed owns a property in Pacific Beach worth about $700,000 that he paid $450,000 for several years ago. The rents are about $3,100/ month and after all expenses, he was netting about $400/month. Since he purchased it for $450,000, he was depreciating another $10,000/year on his taxes, which saves about $3,500/year. He’s taking the money to one of the new locations I’ve identified, and he will purchase a three-plex and a four-plex for about the same total cost. His rent will be between $7,000 and $8,000 total and his costs will be about the same (HOA goes away, property taxes go up). So, his net

income will rise about 10 times to over $4,000/month. As a bonus, he will be depreciating about $17,000/year for a tax savings of about $6,000. In other words, he goes from making a total of $8,300/year to making about $54,000/year, which for him allows his wife to stay home and raise their daughter. So, although San Diego is a great place to live, it makes sense to look at your investments and see if property in another location will pay off better.

Best Buddies Against Stereotypes
B
est Buddies is one out of one hundred clubs at Del Norte, but it proves to be the most inclusive. What makes Best Buddies so inclusive is that it is founded on bringing students together. Specifically those with an Intellectual and Developmental Disability, or IDD. Best Buddies aspires to integrate students with an IDD with the rest of their peers. Members of the club are paired with a student with IDD, and a special bond is created. Best Buddies organizes several outings throughout the year so that Buddies can grow
closer together. They can be as simple as bowling, or as extravagant as the Best Buddies Ball, which is coming up in the next few months. The Best Buddies Ball and all of the club’s activities fulfills the club’s purpose: to facilitate friendships and growth among members, whether one has an IDD or not. Best Buddies strives to foster inclusion. Activities like the Best Buddies Ball enable students with an IDD to experience the same fun and enjoyment that all students should be subject to. As the club and this inclusive movement continues to grow, President
Come Play with us! COSTS:
Mason Shields, senior, said, “The goal of Best Buddies is to drive itself out of business, meaning that a club does not have to exist to bridge the relationships between those with and without an IDD.” Best Buddies continues to promote inclusion among club members, an inclusion that will hopefully be recognized on a global scale and end any stereotypes against IDD persons. ICE SKATING
THROUGH SAN DIEGO Discover One (Or More!) of San Diego’s Many Ice Skating Rinks This Winter by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
T
here aren’t many places in the world where you can lace up your skates and glide along the ice, palm trees swaying in the Pacific Ocean breeze, and then step off the rink and onto the beach in the middle of winter. Such is the case, however, at the iconic Hotel Del Coronado’s Skating by the Sea beachfront ice rink. Not only are you able to enjoy the sound of waves lapping at the shore but you will likely be swept up in the wintery cheer of it all – twinkling lights, festive music, and hot cocoa to start. But the Hotel Del isn’t the only place to ice skate this winter. Our beautiful city is home to several special holiday rinks as well as a number of rinks open yearround. Indoor ice rinks offer a variety of fun activities all year long, including public skating sessions, figure skating lessons, ice hockey leagues, broomball, ice polo, curling, and more. Some, like Escondido’s IcePlex, even have special winter-themed events to help get you in the holiday mood. While year-round rinks let you bundle up in thick socks and scarves even in the middle of July, San Diego’s holiday rinks are nothing short of magical. Viejas Outlet Ice Rink, for example, is a seasonal favorite and boasts the title of Southern California’s largest outdoor ice rink (even said to be bigger than the one at Rockefeller Center), where guests can enjoy shopping, entertainment, and a holiday water show all in one place. Poway’s Community Winter Festival features not only ice skating, but s’mores, fun decorations, and even sledding! Or you might check out the brand new outdoor rink at Point Loma’s Liberty Station, with all proceeds benefiting the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. How’s that for holiday spirit?
