Don’t Blink

Jessica Breaux ASSO C IATE E DI TO R S

I

’ve always had this strange relationship with time – more specifically, time passing. Of course, I realize that I’m aging each year as I roll past the day that my mother brought me into this world, but I’ve never felt like I was getting any older. I realize that my body is starting to feel older, and for some reason I don’t have as much hair as I once did (according to the mean photos that people have taken of me showing the back of my head). On the other hand, it’s definitely easier to grow facial hair these days – even those special blonde ones that my wife insists are actually grey, but that’s an ongoing debate and still inconclusive. Forget the physical aspects of age. I still feel young mentally – most of the time. While enjoying every last day as I approach the threshold of 43 years, I suddenly felt old this morning. It was an unexpected feeling, but I suppose it should have been predictable. Today, my youngest, my little sweet pea, my little Audrey Becca jumped onto a bus and headed out to sixth grade camp with her friends and classmates. This makes me sad. No, not because I have separation anxiety or I’m afraid that she will be homesick (I’m sure she is going to have a blast and everyone will be just fine – parents included). I’m sad because the years have gone by way too fast. My wife and I have a junior in college. She went to sixth grade camp nine years ago. Our seventh grade son went to camp last year. I was fine with both going. Today is different. Today is a humbling reminder that my little girl is charging life at a faster pace than I am prepared for. I remember some advice that my uncle once told me when talking about life and raising kids. He said, “Don’t blink... because you are going to open your eyes one day and your kids are going to be all grown up. It goes by fast. Cherish every minute.” Derrick Breaux I MUST HAVE BLINKED! Make no mistake about it, I’m Publisher trying not to blink again any time soon. I will take that great advice and do my best to cherish every minute moving forward. Thanks for being a reader of 92127 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. TRAVELING CHILDREN’S THEATER TO RECRUIT LOCAL CAST

P

oway OnStage, through its Arts in Education Initiative, will present the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s (MCT) production of Treasure Island and a free week-long theater camp for children in March. The MCT tour team will arrive with a set, lights, costumes, props, and makeup, everything it takes to put on a play, except a cast. The team will hold an open audition on Monday, March 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. to cast 50 to 60 local students ages five to 18 to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week, Monday through Friday from 4 to 8:30 p.m., culminating in two public performances on Saturday, March 18 at 3 and 7 p.m. In addition to producing this unique musical theater experience for children in the community, the Arts in Education Initiative sponsors a variety of theater arts workshops taught by MCT directors and actors to over 350 elementary students in the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). In-classroom workshop topics range from improv acting to stage makeup. This year, workshops will be held from March 14 to 16 at local PUSD elementary schools.

MCT is the nation’s largest touring children’s theater, bringing the performing arts to all 50 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, and 16 countries. All shows are entirely original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairy tales. MCT seeks to help children grow into confident, successful citizens by utilizing the positive results of their programs, including goal achievement, communication, creativity, self-esteem, and social skills. For more information about the Arts in Education Initiative visit www.powayonstage.org. 

DIEGO CALDERON IS DEDICATED AND DRIVEN WHEN IT COMES TO THE SPORT OF FENCING

16 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • February | March 2017

ixteen-year-old Diego Calderon was born in Germany but moved with his family to the United States about six years ago. For the past four years, they have lived in the Westwood community of Rancho Bernardo. “We have many friends in the neighborhood,” explained Diego, “and my parents bought a house because they really like the sense of community.” Diego is currently in 11th grade at Rancho Bernardo High School. “I really like the teachers. They are always available when I have any questions,” he shared. “The students are all very laid-back, and I get along with everyone.” His favorite subjects in school are his language classes. “I was born in Germany in a Spanish family,” said Diego. “I am fluent in all those languages, which helps me a lot when I am traveling.” And because Diego is a competitive fencer, traveling is something he does quite often. “I competed in last’s year European and World Championships,” he explained. “My goal this year is to

qualify again for the European and World Championships. It is very difficult and it requires that I travel a lot to compete internationally. My next destinations are Bratislava (Slovakia) and Luxemburg.” Diego started fencing when he was just eight years old. “It runs in my family,” he shared. “My father is a fencing coach, and my brother was already fencing (when I started).” Inspired by his coaches and fellow teammates in Spain, Diego remains extremely dedicated to his sport. “Fencing really takes most of my time outside of school,” he said. “It requires both physical and mental fitness. I do a lot of fitness training, swimming, and also work with a sport physiologist to learn how to control the pressure of the competition.” When he travels, Diego trains about five hours per day and five days per week. “I then usually compete on the weekends,” he added. All his hard work seems to be paying off. Diego won the North American Cup two years ago and the Spanish Nationals last year. “My latest result was finishing 20th in a World Cup that took place in Grenoble, France, in November,” he noted. Diego is currently the California High School Champion in fencing as well. Apart from fencing, Diego is proud to be in the AVID program at his school. “I do community service through the program,” he explained. “In total, I have a little more than 75 hours to raise money for the school library.” As for his future plans, Diego replied, “I would like to study kinesiology and win a medal at the Olympic Games.” 

FROM THE DENTIST

FOOD AND BABY TEETH – FRIEND OR FOE? We all know what our children should be eating and we are also very aware of what they are eating. Now the big question is, how do we get that all lined up? Here are some helpful hints and food tips of things to look for and apply with daily eating habits and snacking: THE LESS PROCESSED THE BETTER, EVEN IF INGREDIENTS ARE LISTED AS ORGANIC. When it comes to teeth, whole foods in their natural state are the best. When foods are processed, many of the protective and nutritive parts of the food are taken out. A whole apple makes for a better snack than apple juice. STAY AWAY FROM STICKY. We all know that eating those gooey, sticky candies are no good at all. What about the healthier side of the spectrum? Imagine eating an apple vs. a banana vs. dried apricots. All healthy and readily available in the organic section, but miles apart in creating risk of decay. The

apple feels clean after eating, while the banana feels a little fuzzy on the teeth. The dried fruit, however, can stick to our teeth for quite some time and increase our chances for cavities. FREQUENCY IS NOT OUR FRIEND. Our poor kids have such small stomachs, and it feels like they are constantly wanting to eat snacks. Eating frequently never really allows our mouth to have a rest and chance to get the pH level back to normal. So how do we win? Scheduled feedings are best. Aim for snack time to be done while sitting, and the kids can focus on the food. If you’re at the park, have them come and sit, eat, finish, and go play again. It’s the grabbing a bite, going and playing for ten minutes, and coming back to get another bite that adds up. ASK AND DISCUSS. During your child’s dental visit is the perfect time to talk about foods and

strategies. I love it when parents and I can discuss the individual needs of each child. Discovering the right way to help your little one win is one of my favorite things about being their pediatric dentist. One last note, a big kudos to all of you that are trying your best. Parenting is not for wimps – thank you for letting us be part of the team.

T

he Im family has an entangled history with California. Jim and Ellen Im both grew up in separate areas of Orange County, met in dental school in Baltimore, MD, got married in Southern California, settled down for a while in Maryland, and, in 2014, decided to permanently move to San Diego. “We knew it was going to be a challenge to find the right community for our growing family,” Ellen shared. But when they visited San Diego to look at potential areas, one community stood out from the rest. “We really appreciate everything about the Del Sur community,” they said. “The neighborhood has a good vibe and is made mostly of young families that are friendly and like-minded.” The family, which includes daughter Eden and

sons Andrew and David, are very active in their community. Eden, a second grader at Del Sur Elementary School, enjoys softball, soccer, gymnastics, and being involved with Girl Scouts. Andrew, in kindergarten at Del Sur Elementary, plays with the 4S Ranch Youth Soccer Association and plans on joining Boy Scouts next year. Both children also love to draw and play with their baby brother David. Ellen, a pediatric dentist, gives oral hygiene presentations at local schools and churches, and is involved with Eden’s Girl Scout troop. Jim, who is now a scientist but used to be a dentist, volunteered for medical missions that provided free dental services to the underserved both abroad and in the local community. And as devout Christians, the Ims attend church regularly and are involved with church groups as well. While each member of the Im clan has their own personal interests, they enjoy spending time together at local pools, parks, and trails. “We love to do everything as a family,” they exclaimed. Ellen and Jim also make it a priority to spend individual time with each of their children with one-on-one dates. “It gives us an opportunity as parents to make them feel special and boost their confidence,” Jim and Ellen said, “by calling out the good we see in them, displaying affection without fear of sibling jealousy, instilling good values and manners, and having open, honest conversations.” That is one family tradition definitely worth treasuring. 

YO U R N E I G H B O R ’ S R E C I P E

INGREDIENTS ½ 13 / ¾ 13 / 1 1

cup egg whites cup almond milk cup rolled oats cup blueberries, divided teaspoon baking powder pinch xanthan gum nonstick cooking spray sweetener of your choice, to taste

Toppings peanut butter, optional (but highly suggested) maple syrup

DIRECTIONS 1.

2.

3. 4.

5.

6. 7. 8.

Combine all ingredients in your blender or food processor. Include half of your 1/3 cup blueberries in the blender mixture, and put the rest aside for now. Blend ingredients until your mixture is the consistency of a thick batter. If your blender or food processor has a “batter” option, use that. Otherwise 30 seconds is probably sufficient. Spray your pan lightly and pour your batter into the pan. Sprinkle in a few of your remaining blueberries into the pancake batter, but be sure to save some for your second pancake. Cook on medium heat for approximately 3 minutes. Keep a close eye on your pancake, checking every few minutes for a golden brown bottom. With a spatula, flip when ready. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for your second pancake. Once ready, plate your delicious creation and marvel at your new breakfasting skills. Optional: top your pancakes with peanut butter (my favorite) or (the more traditional option) maple syrup.

MAKES: 2 pancakes • TOTAL TIME: 15-20 minutes

ABOUT THE CHEF CHEF: Randi Cantrell PROFESSION: ZCode Media Associate Editor FAMILY: Husband – Collin; Cat – Kikka; Dog – Kiba HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Writing, strength training/fitness, reading, traveling FAVORITE LOCAL ACTIVITY: Hiking, training at Sweathaus ABOUT THE RECIPE: As a fitness enthusiast, I’m often looking for

healthier or macro-friendly alternatives to my favorite foods. I adapted this recipe from somewhere long ago, but have changed it so much over time that I now consider it my own. It’s easy to make and can be changed according to the season – skip the blueberries and add pumpkin puree instead, if that’s your jam. While they may not be like any pancake you’re used to, I think you’ll enjoy what they bring to the table. Perfect as a pre-workout breakfast! ABOUT THE CHEF: A San Diego native and word lover since birth, I think it’s pretty great that I get to spend my weekdays learning about the amazing residents of North County and spotlighting them in our ZCode’s community magazines. During the weekend, I spend my time writing, exploring new spots for coffee or food, and just generally trying to take in more sunshine. 

C O M PA N Y P R O F I L E

B E H I N D PAG E S Meet the

Team

Producing six issues of 14 community magazines per year is no easy feat. Our goal from the very beginning has been to create local magazines with content that people actually want to read. Luckily for us, we have an all-star squad that works together to make this vision a reality. Behind each issue is our close-knit team – editors who collect the stories, production leaders who work with our valued advertisers, photographers who capture the perfect moment, and graphic designers who make it all look pretty. And while we have different personal interests, all of us here at ZCode have one thing in common: we are passionate about what makes each of these North County communities so special. It’s because of you that we do what we do. Thank you for inviting us into your home and being a loyal reader of 92127 Magazine. We look forward to bringing you exciting community news for many more years to come.

DERRICK BREAUX | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics, and sales teams.

LAINEY KRAL | Associate Editor I joined the phenomenal ZCode team two years ago, and the best part of my job is the opportunity to talk to all of you. I love learning about the individuals, families, and organizations that make our communities so special. A North County native currently living in North Park, I spend my weekends hanging out with friends and family, diving into fantasy novels, and riding other people’s horses.

RANDI CANTRELL | Associate Editor Like a lot of my fellow ZCoders, I was born and raised in San Diego. I recently celebrated my first wedding anniversary and my second anniversary of working on the ZCode team. You can find me huddled over the latest edits or planning out our upcoming issues with one of my color-coded spreadsheets. Out of the office, I’m usually searching for that perfect cup of coffee, lifting heavy stuff at the gym, reading a good book, or running interference between my dog and cat, whose friendship is still a work-in-progress thing.

SHYANNE LOPEZ | Associate Editor Born in Los Angeles and raised in Murrieta, I’m somewhat of a newcomer to San Diego. Luckily, joining the fantastic team of creatives at ZCode has really allowed me to learn and love so much about this beautiful city I now call home. When not in the office searching for cool stories and people to feature, I can be found tending my succulent garden, “discovering” a new brewery, or taking selfies with my dog.

SAMANTHA EDWARDS | Editorial Assistant I was born and raised in North County San Diego and after spending five years away, I don’t think I’ll ever be leaving again! It has been a dream come true for me to join the ZCode team. In the office you can find me furiously typing away or sifting through piles of paper proofs. Outside of the office I’m usually baking, writing, drinking wine, walking my dog, or spending time with family and friends.

28 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • February | March 2017

JESSICA BREAUX | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing, and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots, just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.

MARIA FERNANDEZ | Graphic Designer I was born and raised in Mexico where I was surrounded by the love of my big family and friends. Before moving to San Diego I lived in Washington state where I worked at JWT Inside and the University of Washington. I am passionate about graphic design, and I love to connect with the community through my design. It’s a pleasure to be doing what I love at ZCode, a place that has become an extension of my family. I like spending time with my family, hiking, reading, and loud laughter.

SHARI CANETE | Graphic Designer I have strong ties to Canada, but San Diego has always been my home. And I feel very fortunate to be part of the ZCode family. In the office, I’m the one clacking away on the keyboard trying to find the perfect color combo. Out of the office, I’m obsessing over ancient alien theories, running madly outdoors, enjoying San Diego cuisine, or taking my big fur-baby on adventures around the neighborhood. And I’m a huge coffee fiend.

HEATHER LOCKWOOD | Production Coordinator I am a mother to three wonderful children, and a wife to the love of my life of 20 years, with over 10 pets – dogs, cats, guinea pig, and a bird. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.

LORI LUM | Photographer I have owned and operated Spark Photography for just over a decade. I am a past president of Professional Photographers of San Diego County, and my passion is creating visual legacies for families and organizations. I love working with the ZCode team and meeting all kinds of new people in the neighborhoods I cover. Originally from Iowa, I enjoy the San Diego sunshine and live with my husband and adorable two-year-old daughter. In my spare time, I like to get outdoors with my family, read, and cook.

el Norte High School (DNHS) special education teacher Megan Gross – who last year won DNHS Teacher of the Year, PUSD Teacher of the Year, San Diego County Teacher of the Year, and California Teacher of the Year – has been named one of four regional finalists for the 2017 National Teacher of the Year (NTOY). The other three finalists include Athanasia Kyriakakos (Maryland), Sydney Chaffee (Massachusetts), and Chris Gleason (Wisconsin). The NTOY winner will be announced this spring and will spend a year traveling the nation to represent educators and advocate on behalf of teachers and students. Megan has taught and facilitated inclusive education for students with disabilities at both the elementary and secondary level for nine years, advocating and supporting students’ transitions from segregated special day classes to an instructional day including general education academic and elective classes. She facilitates social inclusion and extracurricular activities as the co-advisor of the Best Buddies Club at DNHS, is the co-author of The Inclusion Toolbox and ParaEducate, and has presented at regional and national education conferences. The NTOY program identifies exceptional teachers nationwide, celebrates their effective work in and outside of the classroom, amplifies their voices, and empowers them to take part in policy discussions at the state and national levels. The NTOY will be selected from the four finalists after rigorous in-person interviews with the selection committee. “The four finalists embody the character, knowledge, skills, and passion of exemplary teaching,” the selection committee said. “The skills of these teachers transcend the classroom, as they also demonstrate the ability to engage with their peers, parents, community members, and policy makers.” Learn more at www.ccsso.org/ntoy.  32 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • February | March 2017

Oak Valley Teacher Honored

RB Hall of Fame Nominations

Oak Valley Middle School math teacher Traci Jackson was named the winner of the Rosenthal Prize for Innovation in Math Teaching, a national contest held by the National Museum of Mathematics. Traci created a lesson called Creating Color Combos: Visual Modeling of Proportional Relationships in order to engage students in exploring proportional reasoning by mixing colored solutions to visualize ratios. It was chosen as the most unique, innovative, and interesting lesson for students in fourth through eighth grade. “Traci is one of the finest math teachers at Oak Valley,” said Principal Casey Currigan. “She is constantly working to make sure students understand mathematics and how it’s relevant for them in their world.” The annual Rosenthal Prize is designed to recognize and promote hands-on math teaching in upper elementary and middle school classrooms. Traci was awarded a $25,000 cash prize, and her lesson will be shared with teachers across the country.

The stuffed animals and books were donated by members and guests who attended RBWC’s holiday luncheon in December. The club has donated hundreds of stuffed animals and children’s books since the philanthropy project was first started in 2012. RBWC was formed in 1964 and officially became a nonprofit community service organization in 1966. The club now works to help young women in the community obtain an education through gifts, grants, and loans. Club membership is open to women of all ages in RB and surrounding areas. Luncheon meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at the RB Inn. For more information call Club President Pearl at 858-521-8422.

The competition consists of monthly tournaments where the top three finishers in two flights accumulate points each month. Those who win at least 10 points over the course of the year are eligible to compete in the year-end tournament. Of the 33 couples who were eligible to participate in the final championship match, 27 played. In a format where the better score of the two partners was counted on each hole, four couples were tied after 18 holes with net scores of 61. Ron and Sharon Oliver of Rancho Bernardo won the play-off for the championship. The prize for winning the most points during the year in the monthly tournaments was won by Ken and Carol Packer of Rancho Bernardo, who amassed a total of 57 points.

The Women of the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo (WCCRB) recently held their annual golf fundraiser to benefit the Jean McLaughlin Women’s Center for Health and Healing at Pomerado Hospital. The group presented the center with a $14,000 check in January, which will be used for the center’s greatest needs, such as new software equipment, genetic testing and counseling, mammograms, and personalized physician consultations. Since its opening in 2008, the center has provided a wide range of services for women in North County San Diego at all stages of life, including imaging, comprehensive breast health services, bone density evaluation, women’s health education and support groups, and compassionate care in a welcoming environment. WCCRB has raised over $38,000 for the Women’s Center since 2013. February | March 2017 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • 37

The office encourages open communication and takes the time to explain prevention plans, treatment, and procedure options and finances. Dr. Ambrosio understands that each child is unique and must be treated as such. “These visits can

Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. With a new name and expanded focus, Soroptimist International of North San Diego (SINSD) continues to prove the motto “Best for Women.” Since 1977, the club has created a community that allows women to be their best while helping other women achieve their dreams, both locally and around the world. 92127 Magazine chats with President Alice Dodd and President-elect Nancy Eastman about the club’s efforts to support women’s education, curb human trafficking, and provide transitional housing for victims of domestic violence.

Q &A

WITH

AND

PRESIDENT ALICE DODD WHERE DOES THE WORD SOROPTIMIST COME FROM, AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Alice: Soroptimist is a “coined” Greek word meaning “best for women.” We are a service organization with a focus on helping women and children. WHEN AND WHY WAS SOROPTIMISTS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDED? Alice: Soroptimist International was founded by Violet Richardson in 1921 in Oakland, CA. In those days,

philanthropic societies were almost exclusively male. Ms. Richardson knew many dedicated, motivated women who responded effectively when there was a need. WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE NORTH SAN DIEGO CHAPTER? Alice: Founded in 1977 by a number of professional women in the Rancho Bernardo area. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE CHAPTER’S RECENT NAME CHANGE? Alice: We are motivated to expand our membership and were concerned that our former name, Soroptimist International of Rancho Bernardo, gave the impression that we were only interested in serving in the RB community. Soroptomist International of North San Diego encompasses Rancho Peñasquitos, Carmel Mountain, 4S Ranch, Del Sur, etc., and we hope to recruit from those and other surrounding areas.

"Soroptimist is a'coined'Greek word meaning 'best for women.' We are a service organization with a focus on helping women and children." PRESIDENT-ELECT NANCY EASTMAN WHAT IS SINSD’S MISSION, AND HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FULFILLING IT? Alice: Our main mission, as stated earlier, is to improve the lives of women and girls. All our projects must be relevant to that goal, whether it is locally or internationally. We look for projects where we feel there is the greatest need. WHAT COMMUNITIES DO YOU SERVE, AND WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WORKING WITH THOSE COMMUNITIES? Alice: Over the years, we have donated funds to the RB Library as well as the RB Historical Society. We have also given scholarships to the Miss RB Program for the young woman who writes the most inspiring essay. We supply lifeline monitors to elderly women in the Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Peñasquitos areas. For the past four years, we have become involved with the anti-human trafficking awareness program in San

Diego. With that, we have involvement in other areas of San Diego County from Oceanside to the border. Obviously, over the years we have seen the changes and the growth of Rancho Bernardo and are proud to be part of the community. HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY BECOME INVOLVED WITH SINSD? Nancy: A longtime friend belongs to SI San Diego, and she thought I would enjoy the community of women and the causes. She was right, however, I joined SINSD, where I felt I could make an impact closer to home. Alice: About three years ago, I attended the annual High Tea event co-sponsored by SI of Rancho Bernardo (now SINSD) and SI of Poway. At this funraiser, I

PRESIDENT: ALICE DODD PRESIDENT-ELECT: NAN EASTMAN VP OF MEMBERSHIP: LIZ BARTOLI AND PAM WARNOCK SECRETARY: GINNY BROWN TREASURER: PAT HAMILTON CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: MJ THOMPSON DELEGATES: BARBARA BERTRAN AND NANCY BROWKAW heard testimonials from two of the Transitional Housing mothers who have been able to get themselves and their children redirected after fleeing nightmare abusive relationships. Both women were so appreciative of the apartments, furnishings, and mentoring they received through our two clubs. They were grateful for the difference it made in the lives of their children to live in a safe, pleasant place. I knew I wanted to be part of that effort. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION, AND WHAT DUTIES DOES IT ENTAIL? Alice: I am currently the president. I officiate at meetings and try to ensure that all the committee chairmen are on track to accomplish their goals. I also take part in district-wide conference calls and meetings with presidents from other regional chapters. Nancy: I am the president-elect of SINSD and am watching Alice and the current board to learn the scope of responsibilities for next year. This year, I serve as the co-chair of the Soroptimist 2017 High Tea with Cindy Spilman of SI Poway. This event is the primary fundraiser for both

clubs. It supports our jointly-managed Transitional Housing Program for domestic violence survivors and many of the other programs we run independently that empower women to be the best they can be. I’m also on the Live Your Dream committee to promote our Soroptimist scholarship program for women headof-households in financial need, who are in an undergraduate degree or skills training program. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT YOUR ROLE? Alice: I love being associated with the fun, capable, caring women in SINSD. When we can make a difference in the lives of women who are going through a tough time, it’s very rewarding. Nancy: It is most rewarding to see us truly making a difference in the lives of women in our community. THE MOST CHALLENGING? Alice: I worry that my busy schedule may mean that at times something gets neglected or is mishandled. Nancy: The most challenging thing for me is to figure out how to maximize

the positive impact of the time, energy, and resources that our members graciously donate.

Transitional Housing Program and other programs for women and girls.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY GOALS OF SINSD, BOTH SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM? Alice: To continue our fundraising efforts enabling us to help women and children in need. To grow our membership to be able to bring in new faces and ideas. We are always looking for like-minded women! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM? Alice: This program began in 1997. Our Transitional Housing Program moves families from dependency and abuse to a safe, self-sustaining lifestyle by providing housing, financial help, and mentoring. It is an 18-month program to help women and their children fleeing abusive relationships. Working in conjunction with Crisis House and Community Housing Works, we are able to place these women in safe-environment apartments that are fully furnished by both SINSD and SIP. We subsidize their rent, which costs approximately $7,500 to $8,000 a year. We currently have four apartments and hope to add another following this year’s fundraiser. After graduation, these women are able to take all furnishings with them so they won’t have the expense of furnishing a new apartment. To date, the program has helped 53 moms and 115 children. IS SINSD INVOLVED IN ANY OTHER PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS? Alice: The “Live Your Dream” Award each year is awarded to two women who must be head of household as well as continuing their education. We also follow and support past recipients. We have given to the REBOOT Workshop that helps prepare active duty women to make the social and career transitions after they have served our country. We also support women in the “Leap to Confidence” program that helps women rebuild their lives by gaining self-confidence through workshops. Last year was our first year to award the “Spirit Scholarship” to a college-bound

"Soroptimist International has 76,000 members in over 120 countries and has a consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which oversees U.N. activities and policies promoting human rights." CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR HIGH TEA EVENT? Alice: This year we will be holding our 7th Annual High Tea fundraiser at Fairmont Grand Del Mar along with our sister club SI Poway on April 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. This has been a successful event allowing us to fund our Transitional Housing Program for survivors of domestic abuse as well as some of our other projects improving the lives of women and girls. Many of our 500 anticipated guests will wear their fancy hats and enjoy champagne and a very special program with Grammy Award-winning entertainment. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE SOROPTIMISTS? Nancy: SINSD a great group of ladies who welcome others and who share a common interest in helping women be their best. Alice: I think we are one of the best-kept secrets as far as a nonprofit service organization. Even though we were founded in 1921 in Oakland, CA, the organization is worldwide. Soroptimist International has 76,000 members in over 120 countries and has a consultative status with the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which oversees U.N. activities and policies promoting human rights. fter searching for quality early childhood education with reasonable rates and finding very few options, a San Diego mom founded Wee Care Preschool back in 1983. With an overall mission to educate and care for young children in an age-appropriate, high-quality environment, Wee Care has now expanded to a total of three schools, including the newest in 4S Ranch. “Our 4S location was added in July, and we feel it’s truly one of the highest quality preschool facilities in all of San Diego,” said President Darla Suder, a 25-year veteran of the organization. “The building is modern and spacious, and the children have a lot of space to learn and play. The classrooms are large and feature skylights, which allows for a lot of natural light to come into the rooms.” The schools serve children 18 months to 5 years of age, and parents can try Wee Care for 25% off the already-low rates for the first three months. With flexible schedules including half or full days, and options to attend between two and five days per week, along with extended hours of operation, Wee Care strives to accommodate every parent’s schedule and childcare needs. or paying extra for meals. Enrichment classes including sports, dance, and gymnastics classes will be added in the new year. These classes will join an already extensive curriculum designed to foster a ‘whole child’ philosophy, in which children learn to interact and get along with others through playtime, while at the same time learning those important academic skills appropriate to their specific age group. Wee Care Preschools have a relaxed and happy atmosphere. “The children play outdoors and learn vital social skills while enjoying making art projects, singing, and reading during circle time with their friends and teachers,” Darla explained. “All of our staff members are background checked, have CPR/First Aid certifications, and have been educated in the field of early childhood education.” High-quality education, flexible days and hours, affordable prices, and parental convenience and peace of mind are the top tenets of a Wee Care experience. Open from 6 a.m to 6:30 p.m., children arrive in the morning to be greeted by their teachers and provided their morning meal. Then, in the classroom, they explore a wide range of learning experiences, including math, science, literature, sensory experience, dramatic play, music, dance, and different

Balancing Volunteering, Family, and Career Teresa Backer Gives Back to Her Community One Project at a Time by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Spark Photography

A

Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Education: Family: Hobbies:

San Diego native and 10-year resident of 92127, Teresa Backer is a dedicated community member and volunteer. “I feel good about giving back to the community and trying to make it a better place to live, one project at a time, one person at a time,” she shared. She is quick to acknowledge she loves volunteering in her neighborhood of High Country West as much as she loves living there. Noting the community’s walkability, family events, and strong connections between neighbors, Teresa said, “Our little area is a pocket insulated from the hustle and bustle of life.” Teresa focuses her time and energy as a volunteer at the Turtleback Education Foundation. “I was a foundation board member and participated, led, assisted, and coordinated events like the Harvest Festival, Goodwill Drive, Art Corp, Room Parent, Valentine Dance,” explained Teresa. “My favorite program is the morning read program. I really enjoy reading with students.” As a Turtleback Foundation board member, Teresa helped secure the grant from the San Diego Foundation to create the Collaboratory, a 21st century classroom designed to teach students new critical thinking, collaborating, and brainstorming skills. The foundation also recently received a grant to create the Makery classroom, a place with the tools and resources to assemble ideas born in the Collaboratroy. In 2014, Teresa was instrumental in the “Get the Bus Back” campaign after the Bernardo Heights Middle School bus was discontinued from High Country West due to funding issues. “Many others had tried to get the bus back, so I knew it would be tricky to do,” Teresa acknowledged. With the collaborative efforts of the community and the school district’s transportation department, though, Teresa was successful in securing a bus route for the middle school students from High Country West. Teresa also serves her neighbors buying and selling real estate as an independent realtor at The Backer Group, an affiliate of RSP, Inc. of La Jolla and Beverly Hills. “It is a natural culmination of all the things I like doing: real estate, law, negotiations, marketing, graphics, strategy, investing and helping others,” she acknowledged. Teresa and her husband, Dam, have three children and appreciate hard work as much as family fun. “We love to travel a lot, play various sports, love games, and have an active social life with family and friends,” she shared. “Sometimes it is tricky balancing work, school, travel, volunteering, and extracurricular activities. All I can say is there is never a dull moment at the Backer house.” 

Bella shopped for supplies, called customers, made promotional videos, and personally dipped hundreds of marshmallow pops in order to make the donation. Bella was moved by the San Diego Rescue Mission after volunteering with her Girl Scout troop on a number of occasions, and wanted to help ensure everyone had a jacket, food, and a place to sleep this past winter. “We are so proud of her in every way and how she’s used this business as a platform for making a difference in the world,” said Gail Czyszczon, Bella’s mother. Half of all profits from Marshmallow Magic are donated to one of Bella’s favorite charities: San Diego Rescue Mission, Project Puffin, or Rady Children’s Hospital. Marshmallow Magic was born a little less than a year ago, imagined and run by Bella herself, who wanted to share her love of baking with the world. Bella has multiple severe food allergies, and uses that challenge to help others. Bella’s mother Gail said, “My

husband and I want to raise an abundant-minded child that seeks opportunity versus focusing on blame or obstacles. We were hopeful that this experience of being 100-percent allowed to bake at free will to create colorful, joyful experiences for others would support that notion.” Bella has thus learned to be sensitive to others’ food allergies, to be resourceful, and to work through challenges. TUTORING CLUB PROFILE

Smart Choices Enrolling Students in Tutoring Club Improves Performance, Morale, and College Planning by LYDIA COBB | photos by Tyler McElhaney

E

veryone has the potential to succeed. Sometimes, more guidance is needed along the way. Tutoring Club teaches and tutors students from pre-K to high school seniors with any school subject, ACT/SAT preparation, and college planning. VP of Franchise Sales and Training Liam Powers explained, “Tutoring Club was started to offer students in the surrounding school districts an opportunity to get support in all coursework and subjects, tutoring as needed to achieve higher grades, preparation for future grade levels, and college planning.” Tutoring sessions are individualized based on the students’ needs. “One day might be math and another might be writing,” added Liam, “so we offer services to our students based on the assistance needed at that particular time.” Parents are encouraged to be involved through regular conferences that keep them informed of their child’s progress. It’s a warm and relaxed feeling inside the center – especially when students’

imaginations are sparked and they realize they can be creators of positive outcomes. Most of the tutors are college graduates with degrees in the fields they’re tutoring, though exceptional upper-level college students also tutor certain subjects. “We had a recent student who had received an NCAA scholarship offer, but did not receive a high enough score on her SAT to qualify for the scholarship,” mentioned Liam. They worked together on how she could focus and raise her score. He added, “She ended up getting the score needed and received a full scholarship to the University of Hawaii.” Tutoring Club is about creating personal and scholastic success, and changing lives. Michelle is the parent of two sons who struggled in school when they moved to the area. She wrote, “Tutoring Club helped raise their grades from Cs to As and Bs. We still continue to attend tutoring sessions to keep their grades up and to get them the help they need.” Prospective guardians can visit Tutoring Club representatives in the annual College Night hosted by the school district

OPTOMETRY PROFILE

SEEING AND BEING WELL The Doctors at 4S Eyecare & Optometry Customize Each Person’s Optimal Vision and Eyewear by LYDIA COBB | photo provided by 4S Eyecare & Optometry

A

ll of us are unique and see things in different ways. That’s why every patient’s vision plan is customized at 4S Eyecare & Optometry. “We were the first optometry office in 4S Ranch and have grown with the community,” said Natalie Li, O.D., partnerowner, “and we recently added another partner to meet the increasing demand.” This means people are clearly seeing the benefits of comprehensive, state-of-the-art eyecare and eyewear. Doctors of optometry not only help patients with glasses and contact lenses, but they also diagnose, treat and manage ocular disease, and provide pre- and post- refractive surgery and cataract care. “We love making a difference in people’s lives, and watching our patients smile when they put on a new pair of glasses,” added Dr. Li. “Whether it’s a young child or an adult, it makes me happy when our patients are proud of what they’re wearing.” Quality workmanship in designer eyewear includes the labels of Tom Ford, Tiffany, Prada, Oliver Peoples, and Maui Jim. Routine eye check-ups, including pediatric eye exams, sometimes uncover other concerns such as binocular vision deficiencies or medical

issues. Cutting-edge Optomap Imaging has been added, giving doctors a 200-degree view of the retina (back of the eye). Digital retinal imaging can help detect conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. The front surface of the eye, the cornea, is analyzed by a corneal topographer for precise contact lens fittings and to determine a patient’s candidacy for laser vision correction. Drs. Keith Wan and Jay Mashouf started with their office, Scripps Poway Eyecare in Scripps Ranch in 2000, and opened 4S Eyecare in 2006. Eventually Drs. Natalie Li and Andrew Fasciani became partners to meet the growing demands of the office. Each of the optometrists are involved in the community, with volunteer activities such as school events or coaching sports. 4S Eyecare & Optometry serves the community around them as well as people visiting from outside San Diego. Several “Top Optometrist” accolades have been bestowed on the doctors in recent years. “We are friendly, knowledgeable, caring, and fun – we put patients first,” added Dr. Li. If hindsight is 20/20, there would be no doubt that 4S Eyecare & Optometry is there for us when it comes to seeing and being well. 

Making it Count

NONPROFIT INSTALLS DONATION METER AT WESTWOOD ELEMENTARY

A

high school studentrun nonprofit organization called Make Change Count for Schools (MCCFS) recently installed a donation meter at Westwood Elementary School. The meter is a repurposed parking meter that will allow students, parents, and visitors alike to donate directly to the school via coin and credit card transactions. “The program is unique in that it allows the school to keep 100 percent of the proceeds that come through the meter, establishing a sense of fundraising independence,” said MCCFS representative Chaitanya Kore. “Through sponsor contributions, our nonprofit ensures this as well as the fact that the installation of the meters are completely free of charge to the school/foundation.” A formal inauguration event was held for the donation meter in December, where Westwood students made the inaugural coin donations in the presence of sponsors, PUSD Board representatives, and Westwood Foundation members.

MCCFS was started in 2015 by then-Westview High School students Alex Wu and Sohan Subhash in order to promote active community participation in raising funds for local education programs. The idea was inspired by an existing program called Make Change Count, which uses donation meters to raise money for the homeless. With the help of San Diego-based parking technology company IPS Group, Inc., MCCFS has already installed donation meters at Los Peñasquitos, Canyon View, and Rolling Hills Elementary Schools. The organization plans to keep expanding the program at other PUSD schools in the future. To learn more visit www.makechangecountforschools.org. 

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H

A Quick Look Backwards and a Quick Look Forwards by SCOTT VOAK

A

s we head into a year with a lot of uncertainty, I hope to give you a comfortable idea of what to expect in local real estate this year. First, let’s look back at last year. The San Diego Association of Realtors has likely already reported statistics for 2016 by the time you read this. It will show that in 92127, home prices were up about 5.5%. However, this is very misleading. If you look at detached and attached homes independently, each was up over 13% in 2016. What is skewing the numbers is that there was a higher percentage of attached home sales reported through the MLS in 2016 than the previous year. This was due in part to a bit of hesitancy at the high end of the market as we headed into the election as well as a large number of new construction homes that were sold by builders without the MLS. So, if last year was better than reported, what lies ahead for 2017? I see more of the same with a potential uptick in the volume of detached sales while the attached should stay about the same. Unlike others who have published that they think we are heading into a correction, I think we should see price appreciation in the 10% range in 2017. The obvious obstacle to this is higher interest rates, but I think there will be a counterbalance to that. The new administration is talking about removing some of the restrictions put in place by the Frank-Dodd Act. Frank-Dodd was

passed after the financial crash in 2008. Of course, it took seven years to implement and is a mess. It has made it much harder for banks to do loans and therefore fewer people can qualify. Repealing some of the more onerous regulations will allow more people to qualify to buy a home. This should more than offset the expected rise in interest rates. Of course, if I am wrong, please disregard and forget I ever said anything. 

Paving New Career Pathways

B

y February, Del Norte High students are already gearing up for the next school year by choosing which classes they will be taking. Course Request Forms, otherwise known as CRFs, will be passed out to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. On these forms, students will indicate what classes they want to take. This year, counselors are in the process of arranging more college preparatory classes. These classes are considered electives, but are focused for certain career pathways. Such classes expose students to the work of different fields. One of four counselors, Mr. Roy, said,

“The ones that are in these key schools, these students have taken classes that are considered career pathways. These are the students that are utilizing these interest classes.” Not only will these classes provide students with more exposure to fields that interest them, they will demonstrate to universities a greater interest in those respective fields. With that, universities can see a more focused student. As counselors on campus have emphasized before, while AP classes are admirable in the eyes of admissions officers, it is about what sets someone apart. These new classes can help with that. Another counselor, Mrs. Marron, said,

66 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • February | March 2017

“It’s about finding a passion and developing it; it’s things that they get hooked into.” New classes specifically tailored to the engineering and biomedical sciences field are expected to be on the CRFs this year. Students are now given even more opportunities to explore career pathways so that by the time they have to choose, the choice will not be as difficult. 

LIVING

LITTLE ITALY Get a Taste of Italy Right Here in San Diego BY SAMANTHA EDWARDS

N

estled along the waterfront in the northwest district of downtown, between the bustling San Diego International Airport and the historic Gaslamp Quarter, is a charming city section with a European flair. San Diego’s Little Italy was founded in the 1920s by Italian immigrant families, who built the area into a prominent fishing neighborhood during the height of the tuna industry on the West Coast. Despite suffering nearly 30 years of decline by the mid-'90s, Little Italy not only still exists today – it is a growing and thriving part of the San Diego cityscape. In fact, it has been recognized as one of the top Little Italy neighborhoods in the nation. And perhaps now more than ever, Little Italy is alive with community spirit. The streets of the 48-square-block neighborhood are studded with patio cafes, public piazzas, markets, authentic restaurants, boutiques, art displays, and other attractions that pay tribute to its rich Italian heritage. The area has been managed by the Little Italy Association of San Diego since 1996, an effort that has proven successful in preserving Little Italy as a stable ethnic business and residential community. This spring the association will complete the largest project of its kind: Piazza della Famiglia, a 10,000-square-foot European-style plaza intended to become the new

heart of Little Italy. The piazza will serve as a central community gathering place to host the area's various activities including farmers markets, concerts, cultural events, and more. So grab your family and friends, head down south, and explore all there is to do in this delightful cultural landmark. 
