Social (Sometimes) Media

I

n 2008, my wife and I finally jumped onto the social media bandwagon and opened Facebook accounts. To be honest, we were obsessed at first. We spent weeks connecting with long-lost friends and setting up our own online lives. It was fun and strange at the same time. We had walked through the doors of the digital social world. But fast-forward nearly a decade, and I’m getting concerned about how some people are treating other people on social media platforms. I am often astounded at the level of rudeness, bullying, racism, and other ill-mannered behavior I regularly witness. It’s becoming more and more difficult to find public postings without a string of comments from people bashing each other. We’ve all heard stories of children being bullied online, and I’m sure we all disavow that type of behavior. So why stop there? I have watched friends, family, and strangers post the craziest comments on social media – things most people would never say in person. This is appalling to me. What are we teaching our kids? Where did it go so wrong? How could a video posting of a high school kid’s amazing touchdown turn into hundreds of racially charged, insulting comments? Have people forgotten basic human decency? Do we no longer care about how people treat each other? How can someone understand the appropriate way to act face-to-face, but then get behind a keyboard and descend into hateful bullying? Don’t get me wrong. I’m an avid supporter of the freedom of speech, but freedom of speech is not freedom from social consequences. When I see people saying some of the hateful and slanderous things that they are saying, it makes me think. Sure, it’s easier to look the other way, but let me ask you a simple question. Would you continue to be friends and regularly hang out with someone that has no problem making Derrick Breaux racially charged or rude comments to people out in public? If Publisher your answer is no, then why are you still friends with them on Facebook? Perhaps it’s time for us all to do some housekeeping on our social media accounts. It’s painless and easy. And there’s a good chance those obnoxious friends won’t even realize you unfriended them. Gotta go! I see a great selfie opportunity about to happen. Thanks for being a part of 92127 Magazine!

eventeen-year-old Tommy Twomey is dedicated to serving others and making a difference. He is actively involved with building a sports and community center near Tijuana with the organization Build a Miracle. He is also in his fifth season serving as a “buddy” for special needs children through Miracle League of San Diego, a charity sponsored by Major League Baseball. In addition, he volunteers for a local nonprofit that helps young people learn the fundamentals of JAVA. “I attend Cathedral Catholic High School, and am proud of the school’s overarching belief in Christian service. That philosophy has now become a way of life for me. I am also proud of how the Cathedral community has come together to support our classmate, Brycen, who was diagnosed with brain cancer at the beginning of our sophomore year,” said Tommy. Tommy is an accomplished scholar at Cathedral and was awarded the Michael Timmon’s Scholarship at the end of the last school year. He is an Honor Roll student, earned the Father John Paul Cadden and the Monsignor Dickie Awards for academic achievement, and is a member of both the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. Tommy is also a student athlete who

served as co-captain of the Cathedral JV Baseball team, a team that was undefeated in league play two seasons in a row. Tommy’s roots in 92127 run deep – when the Twomeys moved to 4S Ranch in 2002, they were among the first residents in the community. Tommy and his family live in the Legacy subdivision, and he feels thankful that he was able to walk to and from his elementary school (Stone Ranch) and middle school (Oak Valley). “My early childhood memories are of school experiences and years of playing and umpiring Little League, playing basketball at the Boys & Girls Club, working at the snack bar, and hanging out at The Commons with my friends,” related Tommy. As for his favorite places in 4S, Tommy laughingly admits that there are too many to name. In looking to the future, Tommy hopes to attend a fouryear university and pursue a dual degree in computer science and entrepreneurship. “I plan to pursue an MBA with my ultimate career goal of starting a high tech enterprise,” revealed Tommy. Regardless of where the future takes him, it is safe to say that Tommy will strive for success and continue to accomplish his goals. 

County Teacher of the Year

DNHS TEACHER CHOSEN TO REPRESENT SAN DIEGO COUNTY

D

el Norte High School (DNHS) special education teacher Megan Gross has been selected as one of five San Diego County Teachers of the Year. Megan was named during the Salute to Teachers awards show in September, where a total of 43 school district nominees for San Diego County Teacher of the Year were presented. Each year 10 finalists are chosen during the two-hour Academy Awards-style live television program, which culminates in the announcement of the five teachers chosen to represent San Diego County for 2016-2017. Megan’s classroom is the home base for students in the Autism Spectrum Disorders program at DNHS, where she focuses on using technology as a tool to enhance communication. She works collectively with students, families, and support team members to make success possible for all students. She is also the co-advisor for the Best Buddies club, which promotes friendship and social activities for students with disabilities. DNHS Principal Greg Mizel says that Megan is “profoundly passionate about inclusion. She is deeply

dedicated to ending the social and physical isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” The four other San Diego County Teachers of the Year are Jenny Anderson (Casita Center for Technology, Science, and Math), Brooke Crocker (Santana High School), Stuart Douglas (Granger Junior High School), and Amy Schwenke (Fallbrook Street School). All five San Diego County Teachers of the Year will be in the running for California State Teacher of the Year, which will be announced later this year. 

fter Grant and Kari Moore met at a hockey game in 1995, it should be no surprise that they’re raising an active, athletic family here in 92127. Along with their three boys – Jake, 17, Alex, 15, and Zach, 14 – they moved to Del Sur from Lake Oswego, OR over five years ago, and the close-knit community quickly became home. “It’s such a great family community – there are so many parks and activities,” noted Jake. “It has been easy to make good family friends.” His brother Alex added, “We love the beach, hikes, all things football, and attending Oregon Duck athletic events.” Cheering on the Ducks is a family tradition both in the stands and out – Alex’s accumulated nearly

Alex and Zach finished elementary school at Del Sur Elementary, and all three boys attended Oak Valley Middle School. “We are now proud Nighthawks at Del Norte High School,” said Alex. They’re involved in a wide variety of sports – football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball. During Jake’s first season of Pop Warner in San Diego, they beat Nevada to win the Best of the West Division. Zach was a four-time 4S Ranch Little League All-Star. “Now, we’re the first set of three brothers to all play both football and basketball at DNHS at the same time,” Jake shared. “Our parents watched a combined total of 18 basketball games over a weekend last summer at UCSD, when we competed at freshman, JV, and varsity levels.” The three volunteer with the San Diego Food Bank and 4S Ranch Little League. Alex and Jake are also counselors for DNHS Youth Basketball and are involved with Best Buddies. Jake adds Link Crew to his community service roster as well. It’s a busy life, but the Moores still take the time to slow down and appreciate their time together. “We eat dinner together as a family virtually every weeknight at our dinner table,” explained Zach. “And it hasn’t happened yet, but if any one of us boys doesn’t acknowledge Mom with a kiss before a game, she will come down onto the field and kiss us.” They see staying involved as the key to connecting with each other and the whole 92127 community. As Jake put it, “Get involved with multiple activities, make great friends, meet people both in and out of your school and community, represent the Nighthawks and your family, and lastly, have fun!” 

ABOUT THE CHEF CHEF: Peggy Kristensen FAMILY: Vebjorn, Maia, Laina, and Cupcake COMMUNITY OF RESIDENCE: 4S Ranch HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Running, paddle boarding, traveling, and food FAVORITE LOCAL ACTIVITIES: Paddle boarding in Mission Bay, hiking in

Torrey Pines, walking the beach in Coronado, and roaming the farmers markets of San Diego County ABOUT THE RECIPE: As we roll into the fall, I came up with this recipe for a friend who was vegetarian and wanted to avoid heavy cream. It was such a hit that I continue to make it for my family. ABOUT THE CHEF: I was born and raised in Clarksburg, WV, an area

with heavy influence from the many Italian settlers. I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband in 2000. We stayed in the Bay Area for seven eventful years that included the birth of my two girls, Maia and Laina. After much deliberation, we decided to move to San Diego to buy a house and settle down, so I could stay home with my two young children. Today they are both attending Design39, and I really enjoy volunteering at the school. In my spare time I love spending time with my family and friends, running (crazy enough to sign up for the NY Marathon this coming fall), hiking, and, of course, cooking. 

DNHS COMPUTER CLUB TEACHES STUDENTS VALUABLE SKILLS

I

n today’s age of information and technology, the Del Norte High School (DNHS) Computer Club helps teach students to solve complex problems and act as role models for their school community. The main goal of the student-led club is to increase student interest and knowledge in STEM subjects and mobile technology through an engaging and empowering learning experience. “We believe that school computer programs allow students to develop important skills that they can use to further their education and to make them more marketable in the job market,” said club president Omid Hedayatnia. “It also lets students learn about how they want to represent themselves and their school to the rest of the world and the impact they can have.” Omid, a senior at DNHS, is a computer enthusiast. He has taken three higher-level computer classes at Palomar College, participated

in several research camps focused on cognitive science, and hopes to continue his education in the area of bioinformatics. “I strongly believe we can achieve great outcomes by combining computer programming with other interdisciplinary scientific activities,” he said. “I find this incredibly exciting.” In addition to its regular activities, the club has also hosted a series of lectures, produced by the students, with topics ranging from fundamentals of computer science to advanced theoretical topics. “It’s a great meeting place for all students of all ability levels to come to some understanding of code and how we use it in this information age,” said Mr. Lantsberger, the club’s faculty advisor. The club provides students with the technological and social skills they need to work effectively with others and meet the challenges of the future. Discover more at www.nighthackers.org. 

t Del Sur Ranch Dental, dental health goes beyond just your teeth and gums. “We are a complete health practice for all generations,” explained Dr. Brian Davey. “Our team is trained to collaborate with patients and their physician teams to ensure comprehensive care.” By working with patients’ current physician teams, Dr. Davey, Dr. Ryan Kay, and Dr. Jennifer Still are able to coordinate care and take overall health goals and challenges into account. Del Sur Ranch Dental provides full-service dentistry to families and individuals of all ages. The practice specializes in single-day dentistry (CEREC); low-radiation x-ray and digital intraoral

cameras for diagnostics; sedation dentistry; sleep apnea solutions; Invisalign or Clear Correct “Invisible Braces”; oral DNA diagnostics for gum disease care; and dental implants. It’s a laidback, relaxing atmosphere. “We are a lighthearted office and look forward to getting to know our patient families for years to come,” Dr. Davey said. “A patient can expect to be treated with respect. We are a no-pressure office and will present you a plan to achieve your optimal dental health.” The focus on complete health extends beyond the office. Enriching, educating, and supporting the entire community leads to happier, healthier families and individuals. “We

Del Sur Ranch Dental partners with its big brother office, Brian Davey, DDS Inc., to provide free dental care to all of the children at the Monarch School, which serves children affected by homelessness. Dr. Kay has also brought oral health education to a dozen classes at Design39Campus and the team will be working with local Girl Scouts troops. TESTIMONIAL: Dear Kevin & Kelly: When we first contacted you out of the blue after seeing a house in our neighborhood, with your sign in the front yard, go on and off the market over a weekend, we had no idea of the great relationship that was about to take place. DEL NORTE STUDENTS CREATE INNOVATIVE ONLINE PLATFORM

A

group of local high school students recently created TeenMD, an online educational platform dedicated to encouraging medical literacy among teens and youth. TeenMD consists of three parts: a real-time public health map that shows users the latest flu and virus developments in their area, video lessons on historically prevalent viruses and epidemics, and a disease glossary that provides more in-depth information on viruses and diseases. Del Norte High School senior Armaun Rouhi, junior Caroline Ma, sophomore Adrian StetsenkoCarter, and Scripps Ranch High School junior John Jack each have their own responsibilities in maintaining the platform. Armaun serves as the founder and lead developer, managing the technology team in developing the website and overseeing the production of video lessons. “I taught myself JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and PHP programming

languages over the summer to create TeenMD, so I’m typically on a laptop coding away to add new features to our educational platform,” he said. “I also mainly work to set goals for our group and set direction to our educational platform and what we want to accomplish.” Caroline and Adrian are the president and vice president of the Del Norte branch and also serve as directors of media and education. John is president of the Scripps Ranch branch and serves as director of media and education as well. Their roles include content development for the video lessons, working closely with the media team to write scripts and direct videos that communicate information in the most efficient, educational, and memorable way possible. They also manage the two branches and recruit new members through various publicity campaigns. Learn more at www.teenmdhealth.org. 

BECAUSE A COACH

CARED

DON’T GO IT ALONE Mark was a self-proclaimed “total couch potato.” For 10 years, he tried and failed at traditional gyms. “I was never sure how much weight to lift or how many reps to do.” He tried personal trainers, but some weren’t serious, while others pushed him too hard, making him feel even worse. Koko FitClub was the perfect fit: friendly, inviting and “never smells like a gym,” he loved getting coaching with every workout. “At Koko, the equipment is computerized like no place else. They know how much weight you should lift, how many reps to do, and even monitor pace so you lift at the right speed. My FitCoach put me on a program based on my age, goals and strength level, and coaches me whenever I need him, on my schedule. It’s so much better than a personal trainer.”

AT KOKO FITCLUB YOU NEVER HAVE TO GO IT ALONE. We believe in fitness for everyone, but we build it just for you. With our digital coaching technology and amazing FitCoaches, at Koko, you never have to go it alone.

In less than 2 months with Koko, Mark lost 2 inches off his waistline and 14 pounds of body weight. “I feel great and have more energy than ever.” We are so proud of Mark and his results!

Coastal Cleanup Day I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) engaged over 7,500 volunteers at 114 cleanup sites simultaneously at this year’s Coastal Cleanup Day in mid-September. During the three-hour event, volunteers worked to restore the health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment by removing more than 150,000 pounds of trash and pollutants. Volunteers also removed graffiti, replaced invasive plants with water-wise native plants, and performed general park maintenance. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of hundreds of cleanups hosted by ILACSD, receiving attention from several of San Diego’s elected officials who visited cleanup sites in their respective districts. For over 60 years, ILACSD has been San Diego’s most influential advocate for sustainability, serving as an environmental catalyst, awakening passion, inspiring action, and empowering everyone to create a lasting, positive impact on the local environment. Del Sur Town Center Arrivals

The year-long Rancho Bernardo community project to save the lake in Webb Park reached fruition recently when water began to flow from a well drilled to feed the lake and the surrounding park. Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) President and local resident Scott Lawn headed the effort to save the lake, along with the support of many local organizations, residents, and government officials. “I always thought of the lake as a community treasure because it is the center of so many activities that bring our community together,” Scott said. “I took my two sons there as toddlers, now I take my grandchildren there, and I wanted to be sure that succeeding generations could experience its beauty and wildlife as well.” In early 2015, Webb Lake was slated to be drained and filled in due to California’s severe draught. But thanks to the efforts of the entire community, it will continue to be a mainstay in Rancho Bernardo for years to come.

Shea Properties recently announced the newest tenants joining the growing roster at Del Sur Town Center, a specialty retail and dining development in Black Mountain Ranch. The new line-up of restaurants includes Waypoint Public, Board & Brew, Piacere Mio, and Sababa Kitchen, joining recently opened establishments like Burger Lounge, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Choice Juicery, and Frost Gelateria. The center will also receive a number of new retail tenants, including Sprouts Farmers Market, Orangetheory Fitness, Just Run, and Ogden’s Cleaners. These additions will join the center’s anchor tenant Target, along with the recently opened cürBAR, The Bike Shop, and Del Sur Ranch Dental. “We really wanted to establish Del Sur Town Center as a onestop shopping, dining, and gathering place for the community,” said Kiril McKee, senior vice president of retail leasing at Shea Properties. “We’ve listened to the requests of the community and brought in a mix of tenants that offer something for everyone.” October | November 2016 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • 49

CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF RANCHO BERNARDO?

Before the community of Rancho Bernardo was first settled, the original residents were the Kumeyaay Nation. Evidence places them here for over 10,000 years.

In 1769, Spanish soldiers and Franciscan missionaries began settling the area with the Presidio of San Diego and the Mission San Diego de Alcala. They continued throughout what is now California and surrounding areas. From 1769 to 1821, the area was under Spanish rule and in what is now San Diego County, the authority of the missions, who named the areas.

Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821 and the mission lands came under Mexican rule. The Mexican government offered large land grants to anyone settling here and working the lands between 1842 and 1845. One such was the Snook Ranch, which became Rancho San Diego. They stocked it with cattle, sheep, horses, mules, and oxen. In 1846, the Battle of San Pasqual took place approximately where the cross is erected on I-15 today. This led to the Mexican-American War and the region became California, U.S., in 1848. It was sold and resold, then subdivided. The short-lived town of Bernardo developed, with a post office and general store by 1872. After the completion of the Lake Hodges Dam and with the development of Escondido, the town of Bernardo disappeared in the 1920s.

C O V E R F E AT U R E The last of the ranches became Daley Ranch, and in 1960 plans developed to build the master-planned community of Rancho Bernardo. Since then, Carmel Mountain Ranch was developed, along with a middle and high school, and 4S Ranch on part of the Ralphs Ranch. Del Sur and Santa Luz followed, and the borders of the original lands continue reaching out further.

California, like all of America, was and continues to be settled by people seeking refuge and opportunity from all over the world.

There is a monthly free speaker series, which is usually recorded and posted on YouTube. Likewise, the museum volunteers to interview local interesting residents, often seniors, and that too is posted on the RBHistoricalSociety.org website.

Display cabinets, framed pictures, and artifacts encircle the room on all sides, depicting events in the history of Rancho Bernardo. The Wall of Honor contains framed photos of local residents who served this country. There is a research library, and volunteers assist people doing research. Another display is of the fires of 2007, when Rancho Bernardo lost approximately 365 homes. In the back, there is an archive room that catalogs many collections donated to the museum, such as the papers relating to building the new library, Ed Brown Center, and 4S Ranch, to name a few. The society’s mission has not changed since its inception: “…a nonprofit organization, dedicated to preserving the local history and increasing public awareness through programs and outreach. As a nonprofit we depend on the community to help us accomplish our mission: volunteers, donations and contributions, memberships, and gifts to our collections.”

As you have already read, borders come and go, and leadership and ownership change, so what is now Rancho Bernardo or 4S Ranch was once part of great ranches with no such name. The Ralphs family retains a portion of 4S Ranch for annual family events, such as a Thanksgiving gathering. Escondido and Poway have histories that once blended over the Rancho Bernardo border of today, such as with Old Highway 395, now called Pomerado Rd. for a good deal of the road.

This was used to transport people around the county and was key to expanding the region. Along the museum wall, we begin with a timeline depicting the people and events that built the region, beginning 10,000 years ago with the Kumeyaay Nation of Indians, the Spanish and Missionary settlements, the Mexicans

year we have completed digitizing thousands of documents and photos, and the public can browse them online or with the help of volunteers in the archives by making an appointment. But there is much more to do.

The historical society has a fledgling education program whereby a former school teacher goes into local elementary schools to teach about the indigenous people of this area, the Kumeyaay, which is part of the Poway Unified School District curriculum for third graders. There are also programs for scouts and other groups who come in upon request.

I am now serving my second two-year term as president of the RB Historical Society. In 2005, I became a member of the historical society because of my keen interest in history, awakened during research for a book I was writing. When the president at the time learned I was the honorary mayor of Rancho Bernardo through the Chamber of Commerce, I was asked to head up the fundraising to enable RBHS to build a museum – they had outgrown the shipping container that had served them minimally through the hot summers at the historic Bernardo Winery. It took several years but we raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars to build the museum. Finding a lot that would work proved more difficult than first thought. So, the Bernardo Winery offered us four little shops in the old Bunk House, which we refurbished and made the Rancho Bernardo History Museum.

WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT WORKING WITH THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY?

What I most enjoy about working with the historical society are the constant surprises that occur either through the public seeking or offering unknown bits of memorabilia or information. Recently, someone wanted to know if we had documentation of her home, which she was planning to sell, that had reputedly been the original school house but had burned down. Or the location of the original San Rafael church in Rancho Bernardo (a house on Capilla Rd.). We’ve done talks about the long history and controversy of the cross on Battle Mountain, and where Mule Hill got its name (battle involving Kit Carson, where they reputedly were pinned down and forced to eat their mules). HOW DOES THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY STAY CONNECTED WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?

RBHS stays connected with the community through our constant outreach with events like our annual Pancake Festival, which we hold on Memorial Day each year, to honor our military who have fallen and who continue to serve. Our monthly speaker series is a big attraction. Recently, we invited the community for the grand unveiling of our mud wagon, which had a sneak preview at the Fourth of July Parade, though not quite complete with pin striping. It was drawn by two white draft horses and was very impressive! RBHS participates in all community events: RB Alive! Street Fair, where we host the Cultural Center; Fourth of July activities, including the parade; the annual Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation Thanksgiving Luncheon; and many others. WHAT ARE THE ORGANIZATION’S SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS?

Our short-term goals are to expand our education program, incorporating the mud wagon to illuminate the importance of transportation to bring in inhabitants, resources like doctors and settlers, and supplies. You can’t grow everything for yourself, nor can you consume all the wheat you grow, so commerce depends on distribution. In the longer term, we continue to expand our exhibits and collections, providing resources to the community. Most importantly, we need to develop a plan for the future growth of the RB Historical Society, and for this we reach out to the surrounding communities to join us and share ideas. Please contact me for volunteer opportunities such as docents, in the archives, and for events. We have a burning need for someone to help grow our membership! We will train on all jobs; no former knowledge or experience is required.

ommunity of Rancho Bernardo he original residents were the Nation. The Mexican fered large land grants to anyone The historical society survives wholly on memberships, events like the Pancake Festival, donations, and grants such as the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, Rancho Bernardo Business Association, San Diego County, and City of San Diego. DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS THAT THE COMMUNITY SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

The RBHS will be holding the museum open extra hours during the Bernardo Winery’s 39 th Annual Fall Arts & Crafts Fair on Oct. 15 and 16. In December, look for dates of the Holiday Nights when the winery and museum are ablaze in holiday decorations and special events. WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEET?

Our hours of operation, days, and times for the speaker series and other events are posted on our website, which is just beginning a complete overhaul. Our board meetings are open to the public and take place the second Monday of the month at the museum.

The Rancho Bernardo History Museum is located at the oldest continuously operating winery in San Diego County, Bernardo Winery, established in 1869. The current owners, Ross Rizzo and his mother Veronica, are the latest in a continuous family ownership since 1927. As the story goes, five winemakers from northern Italy bought the winery during the downturn caused by Prohibition. The winery was deeply involved in making olive oil for the fishing industry of San Diego, and the wine produced was for ceremonial purposes only – that is, the Church. It was commonly said that the miracle of the Bernardo Winery was that the grape juice they produced miraculously turned to wine by the time it reached the end of the road!

FROM THE DENTIST

TOOTH-HEALTHY FOOD DECISIONS Soft drink consumption has increased dramatically in recent decades. They’ve become a daily habit for a growing number of people, especially kids. A steady diet of soft drinks is a leading cause of tooth decay, enamel erosion, and obesity. They may even increase the risk of developing diabetes. Soft drinks contain a large amount of sugar, which causes tooth decay by producing acid when it comes in contact with the mouth’s natural bacteria. This acid dissolves tooth enamel, eventually causing cavities. But why are soft drinks so much worse than many other snacks? A single 12 ounce can of soda contains up to 12 teaspoons of sugar! A Big Gulp can contain 63 teaspoons of sugar! Adding to the problem is that these large drinks are usually consumed over an extended period of time, prolonging the acid attack on the teeth. The acid attack lasts about 20 minutes, and starts over with every sip. If you have a receding gum line,

this acid can damage the roots of the teeth. This is particularly a concern for adults. Even diet or sugar free soft drinks can raise havoc with the teeth. While they don’t contain sugar for the bacteria to use to produce acid, they do contain their own acid which is added to enhance the flavor of the drink. This acid can damage the tooth enamel almost to the same extent as the sugared drinks.

How can you reduce decay? • Drink soft drinks in moderation. • Don’t sip for extended periods of time. Ongoing sipping prolongs sugar and acid attacks on the teeth. • Do not drink soft drinks immediately before bedtime because the liquid pools in the mouth and coats the teeth with sugar and acid. Teeth are particularly susceptible to acid attack when you are asleep and there is little saliva flow.

DR. CHRIS PHAM • Drink water instead of sugared drinks. It has no sugar, no acid, and no calories. • Get regular checkups and cleanings to remove bacteria buildup (plaque) and calculus (tartar). Remember to floss.

RELIEF Sorrento Valley Pain Relief Center Changes Lives Through Integrated, Evidence-Based Care

by LAINEY KRAL | photo provided by Sorrento Valley Pain Relief Center

W

hen Sorrento Valley Pain Relief Center (SVPRC) opened its doors on Jan. 1, 2011, owners Dr. Jeremy LaMotte and Dr. Mandeep Walia were looking forward to more than the new year. From the very beginning, they’ve been focused on guiding patients to new, pain-free lives. SVPRC’s specialists use a combination of conservative therapies such as natural medical treatment, physical therapy, and chiropractic work. “The goal is to treat the cause of the pain and not just the symptom of pain,” explained Wellness Consultant Dr. Mandeep. She added, “Lots of our patients feel that there is no solution for their pain without surgery or drugs. They also feel that their symptoms must be normal as they are so common. We do not accept that common equals normal.” Patients come to SVPRC for chronic neck, back, shoulder, hip, and knee pain relief; bio-identical hormone replacement therapy; and medical weight loss. “We take an integrated approach and evidence-based care – that means our treatments are proven effective, safe, and most importantly, not harmful,” Dr. Walia said. The practice is a certified BioTE provider for hormone pellets. “By using BioTE hormone replacement therapy we are able to bring your body into optimal hormonal balance,” she said.

SVPRC is also ready to help patients lose weight the right way with a comprehensive, individualized plan for medical weight loss. “We realize that as each patient is so different, they may also have different dietary requirements,” said Dr. Walia. “That’s why we consider your individual needs and lifestyle to customize your weight loss program for optimum nutrition and weight loss.” Pain relief and whole-body balance are a collaborative effort. “When you visit us in SVPRC, you can expect to spend a lot more time with our practitioners than you would with a conventional provider,” said Dr. Walia. After diagnostic exams and laboratory testing, the team presents an individual treatment plan that may include lifestyle changes, physical medicine, nutritional supplements, hormone replacement, or detoxification programs. “Our patients always have a big role in choosing those treatments as it allows them to be in charge of improving their own health and changing the outcome of disease.” The results are life-changing. “Over the past two months as I became pain-free, I noticed an increased energy level, more restful sleep, and an overall increased activity level,” shared Raman, a patient who suffered from knee pain. “I would recommend knee and back pain treatment at SVPRC to others who want to feel better in every aspect of their lives.” 

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

Raising Boys Who Give Back Sandy Lamb Serves as Founding President of the Boys Team Charity Del Norte League by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Spark Photography

W

hen Sandy Lamb learned about Boys Team Charity (BTC) from her sister in Arizona, she immediately knew she had to bring it home to 92127. With the organization’s focus of giving back to the community, BTC promotes altruism in boys through participation in philanthropic activities with their families. Since the Del Norte League officially started in January of this year, more than 80 boys and their families have volunteered over 1,400 hours. Sandy serves as the founding league president for the Del Norte chapter, the 15th league in the country and the first in San Diego. “My heart is endlessly warmed when I see our boys and parents lending their helping hands to seniors, the disadvantaged, or those with special needs,” she shared. The boys and their families have worked with over 20 philanthropies, including the San Diego Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, the Ronald McDonald House, and The Fund for Wildlife. BTC is open to boys in grades 7 to 12 who live in the Del Norte High School zone. They currently have room for new members to join with their families. “More often than not, the boys reflect that volunteering is more fun than they thought!” Sandy said. “My son recently noted that ‘every time we volunteer somewhere, they are happy to see us.’” The opportunity to volunteer with her son is a great benefit of BTC. “Kids in our area have so much to share with others and working alongside their parents can make a significant impact on the community while strengthening their relationships and building new friendships,” she said. For Sandy and her family – husband Scott, son Finley, and daughter Faith – these relationships and friendships are at the core of their priorities. They love their Santaluz neighborhood where kids play ball and ride their bikes in the cul-de-sac, stop by to say hello, or come over for Sandy’s cooking. Sandy recognizes this sense of community across 92127, which helped launch the local league of the BTC so successfully. “The right combination of talent and passion allowed us to start this league up in a very short time,” she said. “People thank me for my efforts, but I am the one who is grateful for the membership’s shared vision.”  72 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • October | November 2016

ave you ever walked into a gym and felt overwhelmed, confused, or had no idea where to start? Then it could be time to Smartrain at Koko FitClub, a digital gym. They have fit figured out. “We remove the guesswork that frustrates people and prevents them from sticking with their fitness goals,” stated Sharky Bowman, manager of Koko FitClub, a cardio and strength training facility with locations in Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Ranch. Koko features the patented Smartrainer, which stores over 100 different exercises and customizes a full-body workout in 30 minutes. The system adapts as a member progresses, adding incremental weight or new exercises to keep them engaged. Each time a member inserts their Koko Key, they are coached. The key stores their range of motion and current strength with specific exercises, and displays the targeted pace per rep onto a monitor. “It is like a video game,” added a member, Bill. “I almost forget I’m working out!” The owners, Karen Lossing and her husband, were members of Koko FitClub in Texas prior to moving to San Diego. “After three years, we missed it so much we opened

Charitable Doctor Dr. Jeff Umansky Volunteers His Medical Services for Disadvantaged Children

by LINDA FRABL | photo by Spark Photography

S

antaluz resident Dr. Jeff Umansky has an impressive educational background. He went to UC Berkeley for college, UCLA for medical school, UC Irvine for general surgery training, Cleveland Clinic Florida for plastic Surgery training, and has had a cosmetic surgery fellowship in Boston with the Harvard Plastic Surgery Faculty. Upon completing his education a little more than 10 years ago, Jeff returned back to San Diego to join his father and brother at his father’s plastic surgery practice in La Jolla. After his father’s retirement, Jeff took over the practice, and he and his brother now share the office. Jeff also works as an assistant clinical faculty member at UCSD. This would be enough to satisfy most working professionals, but Jeff also wanted to apply his skills in a charitable way. That’s why he volunteers his time towards the nonprofit organization Fresh Start Surgical Gifts. Elaborating on the mission behind Fresh Start, Jeff revealed, “Fresh Start transforms the lives of

disadvantaged infants, children, and teens with physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease through the gift of reconstructive surgery and other healthcare services.” As for his own reason for performing volunteer plastic surgery on Fresh Start kids, Jeff 76 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • October | November 2016

proclaimed, “It is rewarding to help children to feel confident about themselves so that they can focus on enjoying their lives without worrying about their physical deformities.” In his precious free moments, Jeff spends as much time as possible with his wife and two young children, and he can often be found landscaping the family yard with more exotic plants and trees. Jeff also enjoys surfing and has surfed in many far-flung spots, including Indonesia, South Africa, Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand. He also is a tropical fish aficionado, and is even part owner of the Shipwreck Cove Custom Aquariums business in Encinitas. Grateful for the Fresh Start charity and all that it does, Jeff graciously commented, “My role as a surgeon is just the tip of the iceberg. The unsung heroes are the staff and volunteers that coordinate host families, international travel visas, and make it all possible.” 

FINANCE PROFILE

Retiring Confidence WITH

Michael J. Lucia and Associates Provides Financial, Investment, and Insurance Services by KELLEY GUSICH | photo provided by Michael J. Lucia and Associates

F

or over 26 years Michael J. Lucia CFP®, ChFC®, CLU® and his team have strived to provide exemplary financial management services that help his clients plan for their financial future. “Early in my career I realized that I wanted to grow my company by establishing meaningful, lasting relationships,” Michael said. “This is the part of my business that I really enjoy.” The firm offers a myriad of financial services including retirement income planning, wealth management, investments, brokerage, insurance, annuities, alternative investments, as well as 401K and pension planning. Michael Lucia and Associates specializes in helping retirees or those approaching retirement to determine if they are on track

to “Retire with Confidence.” “One of the most rewarding feelings as a Certified Financial Planner® is to witness a client come to the realization that they have achieved financial security,” Michael said.

Michael Lucia and Associates recognize the difference between a wealth accumulation strategy and a wealth distribution strategy. “This is where other financial advisors and individuals may fall short. They attempt to use the same accumulation techniques that were used while creating their wealth and fail to change their strategy while distributing income for retirement. This is potentially a huge mistake,” Michael proclaimed. “We provide education and advice with the shared purpose of reaching our clients’ financial goals and objectives.” Michael grew up in Poway playing Little League baseball and Pop Warner football. He attended Poway High School, where he continued to succeed both academically and athletically. He went on to continue his dreams and had the opportunity to play football at California State Long beach for Hall of Fame professional coach George Allen. He is now father to two wonderful children, Vincenzo and Sophia. His wife, Jackie, travels across the country supporting their daughter’s ballet aspirations, while he coaches their son’s elite travel baseball team. “I have really enjoyed being involved locally over the years, and I have a deep love for this community,” Michael said. “I hope that my children will feel the same admiration and continue the Lucia legacy.” Michael is a proud member of the North San Diego Business Chamber. Michael Lucia attributes his success to the strong relationships he has built with his clients. While Michael J. Lucia and Associates has continued to grow, most of that growth comes from favorable introductions. This means that his clients are confident in his abilities and hold him in high regard while they continue to introduce him to those they care about. “A sound strategy during retirement can be the difference between retiring with confidence and wondering if you will outlive your nest egg.” 

Some are calling the top of the U.S. market – what about San Diego?

by SCOTT VOAK

G

ary Keller, one of the founders of Keller Williams, created national headlines when he recently went on the record calling a market top nationwide. He said the market is going to shift. While some signs are there in many markets, I think there is a possibility that the opposite happens this coming spring in inland San Diego. Currently, the local market is split into two factions. The entry market shows strong growth with solid appreciation. The North County Inland attached market (PUSD, Scripps, and Mira Mesa) showed prices up 15% year-over-year while the number of homes for sale is down 32%. Conversely, the detached single family market is down 2% in price and inventory is down 10% (all data from SANDICOR MLS as of 9/8/16). When I looked past the headlines and dissected the market data, I found that the worst-performing sector of our local market has been detached homes between 2,500 and 3,500 square feet. Under 2,500 square feet, the market is strong, with prices and demand increasing (+5% & +26%) and inventory decreasing (-20%). Once we get between 2,500 and 3,500 square feet however, prices and sales are down (-1% and -13.4%) and inventory is down slightly (-7%). I believe this shows that family formations are pushing people out of apartments and into attached housing, allowing those selling the attached homes to move up. But they are doing so more conservatively than in the past. Rather than stretch into 3,000 square feet, they’re reaching less and purchasing smaller homes. The result is that entrylevel and what I call “first move-up” market prices are rising while prices at the next level are stagnant. This creates a smaller price difference

between the 2,500- and 3,500-square-foot homes. Why is this happening and what might make it change? I think it’s the preponderance of negative news over the summer. I would not be surprised if, once we enter 2017 and people realize neither President Clinton nor Trump is as bad as they sound now, people start buying larger homes again. When they do, they will find very limited inventory, creating a squeeze and driving prices higher. For some, this squeeze could work in their favor. For others, this could create difficulties competing for limited inventory. Regardless of which side of that equation you are on, you can strategically navigate the market to your benefit with the right representation and a good strategy. If you would like to discuss how this might impact your personal situation, I stand ready to help. 

odeled after Humans of New York, Humans of Del Norte takes photos of students and faculty and posts these with a story or quote from that person or group of people. People of different ages, different backgrounds, and different cultures are posted, showing the Instagram page’s followers just how diverse Del Norte is. Co-founder Janessa Lin recruited Ethan Chung last year and have posted over 100 stories and gained over 800 followers together. As Lin has graduated this past school year, Chung, now a senior, takes the

lead. From this past year, Chung has learned not only how to properly take photos, but how to make interviewees more comfortable and himself more approachable. He plans to share these lessons as he trains his new partner, junior Sarah Liu. Looking ahead, Chung hopes that their work will become more recognizable. Chung notes there is still room to deepen the emotinal content to reach the level that pages such as Humans of New York and even Humans of Rancho Bernardo High School are noteworthy for. He hopes Humans of Del Norte can also

touch more people and gain prominence as a result. Chung stated, “I think this past year we have gone one step into the right direction by sharing more personal and more emotional stories. I think this will help reach a greater popularity.” Although still growing, the page continues to open students’ eyes to see beneath the surface of those who they pass in the hallways every day.  SABRINA PASCUA is a senior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine.

UNLEASHED IN SAN DIEGO

Explore the City With Your Pooch For a Doggone Good Time

T

by SHYANNE LOPEZ

he only thing San Diegans might enjoy more than beaches, burritos, and brews is enjoying all of those things with man's best friend. Let's face it, it's tough to stay indoors in a city like San Diego. It's even tougher to leave your dog behind to miss out on the adventure. Luckily, America's Finest City might also be one of America's most dog-friendly cities. From North County to downtown, local dog owners are constantly discovering outdoor and indoor destinations where they can be accompanied by their four-legged friend. So, if you're looking to have some fun this fall with your pup, grab the leash and check out some of the dog-friendly activities we've put together – they'll have Fido's tail wagging in no time.

SAND AND SURF

HOWLING GOOD HIKES

BREWS AND BITES

MEETUPS FOR PUPS

Beach days are not just for us – our canine companions love the waves too! For San Diego dog owners, there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches to choose from. From Del Mar Dog Beach to Coronado to the "Original Dog Beach" in Ocean Beach, there is no shortage of beaches to let your dog off-leash for some fun in the sun. Want to make your beach trip even more memorable? Sign you and your pup up for some surf or stand up paddle boarding lessons!

A key to keeping your dog happy and healthy is exercise. Not only does it keep dogs in peak physical condition but it also keeps their minds active. Many owners, especially those without a yard, know all too well the consequences of a bored dog. So get outside and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of local trails with your furry friend. Balboa Park, San Elijo Lagoon, and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve are just some of the dog-friendly local hiking spots.

Tired from an afternoon of hiking or beach-going? Grab you and your pup some refreshments at any of the dog-friendly breweries throughout San Diego. Relax with a cold one while your dog enjoys some attention and treats of their own. Mission Brewery, Mother Earth Brew Co., and Bagby Beer Company are among some of the most dog-loving brew houses. Not interested in beer? San Diego boasts a variety of dog-friendly restaurants and cafés – just take your pick.

One of the most fun aspects of being a dog owner is interacting and making friends with other owners and their dogs. While this can easily be done at a dog park, one of the most sure-fire ways to get some doggie play-dates scheduled is by attending a dog meetup. Meetups can vary in design from breed-specific to muttinclusive to hiking or Pokémon GO dog walkers, so be sure to choose the meetup that is right for you and your dog. Look for meetups in your area at www.meetup.com.

Is Water Treatment Really Necessary? ASK THE PLUMBER! Brockmire Plumbing Services Inc., d.b.a. BPS Plumbing & Drains, has been bringing expertise in plumbing and water treatment to San Diego County for more than 20 years. Did you know that the water in most homes has more chlorine than a pool? In addition, many water districts use a combination of chlorine and ammonia to disinfect the water. This combination has been known to be more aggressive and can cause pinhole leaks in copper pipes. Your water is safer, but your home is at risk of potential water damage because of these chemicals.

Did you know that hard water causes scale build-up, and scale build-up causes problems that result in wasted dollars? The estimated energy cost for running a 40-gallon electric hot water heater is $450 a year. A scale build-up of just 3/8 of an inch gobbles up 55 percent more energy. That’s an additional $247 or more each year to produce the same amount of hot water! A soft water system may be right for you.

DAMAGE TO PLUMBING FROM CHLORINE

DAMAGE TO PLUMBING FROM HARD WATER SCALE

Bottled water is expensive, environmentally unfriendly, inconvenient, and doesn’t address the many other household uses for water such as bathing, cooking, and brushing your teeth. Call BPS Plumbing & Drains today to discover how we can solve your water problems.
