FROM THE PUBLISHER VOL. 10, NO. 3 TM

Graduation Is in the Air

A

s we approach summer, there’s a little something more than warmer days looming in the air. Graduation is upon us. Elementary is promoted to middle school. Middle schoolers move on to high school. High school... College… Graduations, celebrations, and transitions are all around us during May and June. For those of you that know us personally or have been along for the ZCode Magazines journey, it will come as no surprise that my wife and I run a very busy household. Having three kids, it seems that every time we turn around, one of them is advancing to a new chapter in their lives. A close relative gave me some good advice many years ago. He said not to blink, meaning that time flies when you have kids, and they’ll be grown before you know it. And as much as I try to take that advice, I must be blinking more than I realize. Things seem to be moving way too fast! This month, our oldest daughter, Ashley, will graduate college and begin her journey in the MBA program. To say that my wife and I are proud of her is a dramatic understatement. We are constantly impressed with her passion for life, her dedication to her family and friends, and her commitment to success. It seems like yesterday when I was sitting at this same computer writing about Ashley graduating high school. I must have blinked! This 22-year-old woman is the same little girl that we taught to ride a bike at the age of three. The little girl that we began coaching in soccer at the age of four, eventually developing into a speedster that could outrun nearly every opponent down the sideline when given the opportunity. Believe it or not, she’s still outrunning opponents in the various soccer leagues that she plays in for fun – not to mention the soccer teams that she coaches. As parents, my wife and I couldn’t ask for a better big sister for our two younger kiddos. She has set a great example for them, and they are always thrilled to have her around, whether she is watching them play sports or just hanging at the house playing games. She makes time in her busy schedule to nurture those relationships. She takes her role as a big sister seriously. Those that know Ashley would be the first to say that she is their biggest fan. So, my wife and I would like to send a special congratulations to our little Ashley. You did it! You continue to impress us. We are proud of you, and more importantly, we hope you are just as proud of yourself. As much as we try not to blink, we can’t wait to watch you on your journey through the MBA program and beyond. Keep up the good work and don’t forget to set aside a little time to take it all in. Congrats to all the graduates in our community! There are a few days that you remember for the rest of your life, and graduation day is one of them. P.S. I would also like to congratulate our youngest daughter, Audrey. She’ll be making her transition into high school this year. Keep up the great work! We are proud of you.

45 Years of Singing Together RB CHORALE CELEBRATES MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY photo by Eisenhower Photography

T

he RB Chorale’s annual summer show returns Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 at Poway Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s theme is “The RB Chorale: A Celebration of 45 Years,” and will include some of the chorale’s most popular numbers since its founding in 1974. It’s also a special recognition of Pat Bean, founder and director, whose creativity and dedication have grown the chorale from 16 to 150 members over the years. In addition to making music, the chorale gives back to the community and provides a platform for young artists. The chorale awards scholarships every year to San Diego high school seniors who are planning to continue their musical education through college. This year’s six scholarship finalists will perform at the summer show, and audience votes will determine who wins first, second, and third place

prizes each night. Last year, more than $17,000 was awarded to student musicians, and ticket proceeds for this year’s event will help the organization match or exceed that amount for the 2019 scholarships. General admission is $25, with $22 discounts for seniors, students, and military members. Children’s admission is $17. Preferred seating is available for $35. The RB Chorale recruits every spring and fall in preparation for its big summer and winter shows. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings at Painted Rock Elementary School. aden Hollander, a senior at Del Norte High School who lives in the Avaron community, is a successful filmmaker. With six short films under his belt that he has written, directed, and produced, Caden has screened these flicks at 30 different film festivals all over the world, and some have even won awards. He makes films while also being an honor roll student, a member of the Model United Nations team, and a tennis player who has won USTA tournaments. His love for filmmaking first surfaced when he saw the film Avatar as a young boy. Caden reminisced, “That movie inspired me and showed me how much could be conveyed through film.” Shortly thereafter, Caden made a short movie with one of his fourth grade classmates on his iPod Touch. He added, “I’ve been making films ever since!” Caden’s latest project is a feature-length movie musical called Tech Week, based on his own experiences in community musical theater. The film’s title refers to the week before a theatrical show has its debut, when the cast and crew spend long amounts of time together in preparation. Caden proclaimed, “I was really inspired by tech week as a setting for a film due to how close everyone is for such long periods of time, and how you get to know people incredibly well and truly become a family.” It was a logistical feat for Caden to make his first full-length film. He admitted, “Coordinating lots of actors with their own schedules and using a location that only allowed us to film for a limited time was very difficult. It led to us having a very short shoot schedule of just 10 days. We had long days and were constantly rushed for time.” It was all worth it, though. He said, “The most rewarding aspect is undoubtedly when certain scenes come together the exact way I hoped they would.” Caden is especially grateful for his Del Norte education, and he professed, “My favorite subject is English. Analyzing literature has allowed me to become a better screenwriter in terms of how I approach themes and messages.” This fall, Caden will attend the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, majoring in film and TV production. He gushed, “I am super excited to continue my film education and pursue it as a career!” 

Kindness for a Cause

OAK VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL FUNDRAISES TO PREVENT CHILDHOOD CANCER by KELLEY GUSICH

I

ntroduced to the Oak Valley Middle School (OVMS) campus by eighth grade social studies teacher Jon Comerford, The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer and donor-powered charity for childhood cancer. The foundation is committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers, and students and teachers at Oak Valley shave their heads every year to raise funds and support the cause. Emma Hong, eighth grader and St. Baldrick’s Committee Chair, said, “My favorite part of this was knowing that there are people on our campus – kids – who are brave enough to shave their heads in front of 1,500 of their peers to help make a difference. I started tearing up when their hair was coming off and it was so powerful!” She made sure the event was advertised and explained throughout campus, arranging and distributing a slide show highlighting the charity, how funds were used, and including personal stories of childhood cancer survivors. Eighth grader and ASB Vice President Kyle Stephenson participated for the third year in a row. Leading the committee for the past two, he’s created a script for the goals and presentations for all the classrooms, traveling the campus to help get everyone aware of and passionate about the cause. “My

own step-brother stepped up this year and joined me in shaving his head because he saw my commitment and it inspired him. I love the idea of supporting little kids who are in need, and when we stand up on stage with bald heads, it reminds me that we have the choice to shave our heads, but there are so many kids who really do not have this choice,” Kyle shared. “They are heroes.” Jeslyn Tran is a sixth grader and new to OVMS this year. As the ASB Philanthropy and Community Outreach Chair, she tries to organize the ASB in their fundraising

efforts. “I love how we reach out to help kids with cancer, and am so impressed with how many of our students donated directly to this cause,” she affirmed. “It really brought a lot of awareness to the sixth graders, and we all talk about how kind everyone was and what a good school this is.” The school participates in a fundraising drive every year, culminating in the head shaving event. Stylists from Sports Clips 4S Ranch volunteered to do the shaving. 

Katie Kelly Serves the Community in the Classroom and Around the Campfire by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Forever Photography by Liberty

K

“I wanted to share this life-changing experience with as many people as possible.”

atie Kelly knows the power in connecting with young people and creating a community of belonging. As a teacher and camp director, her influence is felt from the classroom to the campfire. In addition to her work as a first grade teacher at Willow Grove Elementary School, Katie is the founder of Camp Kinneloa, a residential camp serving children with Type 1 diabetes. Katie’s inspiration to start Camp Kinneloa was born of her own experience as a child. She has Type 1 diabetes and attended diabetes camp. “There was a delightfully refreshing sense of ‘normalcy’ there as I found myself in a crowd of kids with Type 1,” she acknowledged. “I remember leaving camp feeling empowered. There was a newfound motivation behind taking care of myself, knowing that my friends were headed home to do the same.” This experience as a child, combined with her nine summers of working at Outpost Summer Camps as a counselor and director, has led Katie to open Camp Kinneloa. “I wanted to share this life-changing experience with as many people as possible,” she shared. Katie’s work as camp director mirrors her philosophy in her first grade classroom. “I love building relationships with my students and creating a community that feels like a place of belonging for them,” she shared. “One of the most rewarding parts is seeing their confidence develop as they learn and grow.” Of course, just as with summer camp, there is no shortage of adventure, she noted. “Working with six and seven year olds provides you plenty of entertaining stories as well!” Katie is surrounded by a family who understands the hurdles in the classroom and camp. Her husband, Patrick, is a special education teacher at Santana High School in Santee. Katie’s sister and brother-in-law are the owners of Outpost Summer Camps. “Apparently, camp runs in the family!” she said. Camp Kinneloa will hold its first camp session from June 24 to 29 at the Cuyamaca Retreat Center. The camp is currently looking for volunteer counselors and medical staff. TOBY WELLS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC HELPS KIDS AND ANIMALS IN NEED

T

he Toby Wells Foundation will hold its 18th Annual Toby Wells & Craig Castaneda Golf Classic on June 14 at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside. This year’s theme is Route 66. The tournament is the foundation’s primary fundraising tool to fund all of the programs that provide support to hundreds of underprivileged children and neglected animals throughout San Diego County and other parts of Southern California. The Toby Wells Foundation was first established after Adrienne Wells and April West began searching for ways to raise funds and awareness and honor the memory of their brother Toby, who died from medical complications after paralysis from a swimming accident. The tournament began shortly after the foundation’s establishment, when the Wells family purchased a 300-acre ranch called Blue Apple Ranch. The ranch is populated with several types of rescued animals who are cared for by disenfranchised and disabled children. Toby was known for his love of animals and frequently rescued dogs in animal shelters. Proceeds from the tournament will go to funding a one-day, outdoor afternoon of fun for 250 local foster youth through the nonprofit Voices for Children, field trips for children of military households through the Armed Services YMCA, a workreadiness internship for foster youth at San Pasqual Academy and at-risk youth from Abraxas High School and Warner Springs High School, a holiday shopping spree for Polinsky Children’s Center and the Armed Services YMCA where each child receives a $200 gift card to Walmart, and assistance in caring for Blue Apple Ranch’s rescued animals. For more information about the foundation or to buy tickets visit www.tobywells.org. 

FROM THE DENTIST

FLOSSING: It’s More Than Just a Dance Move by SPENCER MAUSETH, D.D.S., 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

It seems like all the kids are flossing these days, at least when it comes to the video gameinspired dance move. However, kids should also be flossing in between their teeth once a day. Read on for information about why this important daily routine can keep kids’ mouths healthy and smiles bright for a lifetime. Brushing Alone Isn’t Enough Interdental cleaning, more commonly known as flossing, helps remove the food debris and bacteria that collects between the teeth. Dental floss and other interdental cleaners can get into those hard-to-reach tooth surfaces that toothbrush bristles simply can’t

reach. Getting rid of food debris and bacteria reduces the likelihood of gum disease and tooth decay by removing contaminants before they have the chance to harden into plaque. Plaque that is not removed from the spaces in between teeth can harden into tartar, a hard mineral deposit that can be removed through professional cleaning. When plaque forms, brushing and cleaning between teeth becomes more difficult, especially for kids, and gum tissue can become swollen and may even bleed. This condition is called gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. For this reason, flossing is one of the most critical parts of oral healthcare. Daily Routine The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. It’s important to note that it is alright to brush first and then floss or vice versa. All

that matters is that flossing occurs once a day without fail. While some people prefer to floss before bedtime, others prefer to floss in the morning or after lunch. All of these times are completely fine as long as flossing becomes part of the daily routine. Establishing this routine early on is very important for kids – they need to understand just how vital flossing is to maintaining healthy smiles. 

FINANCIAL PROFILE

San Diego Made WHEELHOUSE CREDIT UNION OFFERS FINANCIAL EXPERTISE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY by KELLEY GUSICH

W

heelhouse Credit Union has a long history in the San Diego community. Beginning in 1934 as San Diego Municipal Employees Credit Union, the Credit Union was created by metropolitan workers seeking financial relief during the worst economic period in the nation’s history. “After a few iterations,” Wheelhouse President and CEO Lisa Paul-Hill explained, “over nearly a century (including most recently San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union), our name today – Wheelhouse Credit Union – is unique to a financial institution, and reflects who we are and what we have been to our members for over 85 years.” “As a member-owned, not-for-profit institution, we make decisions based solely on what is best for members and seek their input along the way,” shared Paul-Hill. Offering high-yield deposit products and low-rate loan products (like water conservation, energy efficiency, and solar loans), Wheelhouse received the 2017 Business of the Year Award for their Solar & Energy Efficiency Programs. Created in 2011 and one of the first solar lenders in California, the Energy Efficiency Program focuses on each homeowner’s energy saving needs. “We are proud of our green efforts resulting in a savings of approximately 105,795,420 kWh of electricity per year, which is the equivalent of saving 1,907,030 trees!” exclaimed Paul-Hill. Wheelhouse Credit Union is truly “San Diego Made,” comprised of employees and members who live and work in communities throughout San Diego. Wheelhouse also volunteers much time and energy locally. As the official credit union to the San Diego Seals professional lacrosse team, employees actively volunteer side-by-side with Seals players, most recently with Feeding San Diego and Read – Lisa Paul-Hill Across America. In addition, Wheelhouse staff gets involved with Toys for Tots, I Love a Clean San Diego Coastal Cleanup, Make-A-Wish, and San Diego EarthFair Balboa Park, as these events embody Wheelhouse’s commitment to giving back to the community. These team members are what makes the business different from traditional banks – it’s not uncommon to walk into a Wheelhouse branch and see the same familiar face you first met 10 or 20 years ago. “Our culture, teamwork, and collaboration are drivers of our success,” Paul-Hill affirmed. New and exciting things are happening at Wheelhouse Credit Union. The downtown branch is undergoing a total renovation, and Wheelhouse recently launched a new website with easy navigation and helpful financial tools. Accounts are accessible 24/7 with nationwide access to over 5,000 shared branches and more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs through the CO-OP® Network. Anyone living or working in San Diego County is invited to join Wheelhouse Credit Union. Check out the new high-yield checking, savings, and money market accounts bearing the name Inspired. 

New Fields for Local School

Nighthawks Athletic Physical Night

92127’s Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) is updating its athletic fields with new turf installation. “The days of melting cleats and crumb rubber concerns will not be seen or heard here at MCS,” said MCS Superintendent Jess Hetherington. The turf used will be Hellas Construction’s GEO Plus™ Infill, made from natural coconut fibers and cork designed not to overheat. According to Hetherington, the turf also reduces water usage by 90% compared to natural grass. The field project will include two new multi-use athletic fields, a girls’ softball field, a renovated and rotated baseball field, and new sprint lands and a jump pit for track athletes. “The completion of this multi-use field project will be a game-changer for the athletic program,” said MCS Athletic Director Steve Whitley, “Not only that, but these fields will make a tremendous impact to the 4S Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, and Rancho Santa Fe communities.” The project is currently underway, with a fivemonth target for completion. Learn more about MCS at www.maranathachristianschools.org.

Del Norte High School’s (DNHS) annual athletic Physical Night will be held Thursday, May 30 at the DNHS Gym. All incoming students planning to try out for a sport during the 20192020 school year can get their required physical for a low-cost $25 donation. The physical will clear them for the entire next school year. All athletes are required to have a physical completed before they try out for any sport. The athletic trainer is in charge of handling the physical paperwork which includes following up with parents about medical issues such as asthma, life-threatening allergies, epilepsy, and heart conditions. All proceeds from Physical Night are placed in the athletic training budget which helps with the purchase of tape, splints, elastic bandage wraps, crutches, first-aid materials, rehab equipment, and more. DNHS Physical Night would not be possible without the doctors, coaches, parents, staff members, and others that volunteer their time. For more information, contact DNHS Athletic Director Mike Giaime at mgiaime@powayusd.com, Athletics Assistant Cosette Marolt at cmarolt@powayusd.com, or Athletic Trainer Kim Woolstencroft at kwoolstencroft@powayusd.com.

ocated in the heart of 4S Ranch, SKY Facial Plastic Surgery is owned by husband and wife team and neighborhood residents Dr. Sirius and Amber Yoo. Regularly named as one of San Diego’s top doctors and facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Sirius K. Yoo not only is double board certified in his particular field, but he’s also among a select number of surgeons in the nation to complete a prestigious fellowship in facial plastic surgery at Stanford University. Dr. Yoo specializes in custom treatments for the face and neck only, often combining surgery (for example, facelift, fat transfer, blepharoplasty, and rhinoplasty) with lasers and injectables to achieve impressive results that look natural. “A lot of people are afraid of plastic surgery because they fear a pulled or unnatural look,”

said Dr. Yoo. “The truth is a talented surgeon can turn back the clock without making the patient look like they’ve had surgery. People who come to us want results that look natural, and as a surgeon, that’s where I’m most comfortable.” Dr. Yoo’s advanced surgical techniques attract patients from as far away as Germany, France, England, and Australia. One patient shared, “I had numerous consultations with surgeons in Canada and the U.S. before I ultimately chose Dr. Yoo for my rhinoplasty. I was in awe of his work and knew he changed my life forever. Coming from someone who was bullied as a kid, I know I’ll never be able to repay him for what he did for me.” SKY’s delighted patients have continued to garner the company a lot of attention. Not only has Dr. Yoo won Ranch & Coast Magazine’s coveted Best Facial Plastic Surgeon award for the past five years, but also Amber received

The Backyard Produce Project Helps Our Neighborhoods Give Back photos by Alex Williams Photography

T

he Backyard Produce Project (BPP) began

as a simple solution to two problems: unused fruits

and vegetables in residential yards, and local families and seniors without enough healthy food on the table. Since its establishment in 2009, the grassroots nonprofit has grown in scope and impact to serve even more communities. The Backyard Produce Project now has five donation sites, a 6,000-square-foot garden and orchard, and over 100 dedicated volunteers. We spoke with Chairman Jane Radatz to learn more.

Q&A

Jane Radatz with

Project Chairman What is the Backyard Produce Project’s mission? How does the project work? The mission of the Backyard Produce Project is to share fruits and vegetables from residential trees and gardens with low-income families and seniors in our community. The project consists of three parts: 1. Donation sites where community members can drop off fruits and vegetables from their yards. 2. A volunteer tree-picking team that harvests residential fruit trees. 3. An organic garden where volunteers grow fruits and vegetables for the project. All produce is donated to local food pantries for distribution to low-income families and seniors in our community. When was the Backyard Produce Project founded? How has it grown and developed over the years? The project began in 2009. Once per quarter, Palomar Health convenes a meeting of community members interested in improving health in the community. In 2009, some counselors from the Poway Unified School District came to a meeting and said that, with the economic downturn, they were seeing more May | June 2019 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • 39

and more families who couldn’t afford to put healthy food on the table, especially fresh produce. The group discussed possible solutions. One of the members said, “It’s too bad we can’t get our hands on all the citrus that goes to waste in everyone’s backyard and give it to families that need it.” That was the start of our project. Our plan at first was simply to set up a table in the parking lot of a community center once a month and invite community members to donate backyard produce. We started at the Rancho Bernardo Swim and Tennis Club, then moved to the Seven Oaks Community Center. We added other donation sites over time. Then people began calling, saying they would like to donate their fruit but they needed someone to pick it. We recruited volunteers and started a tree-picking team. In 2010, Sunshine Care Senior Living in Poway offered a plot of undeveloped land on their campus for us to create a garden and grow produce for the project. We started a small garden and expanded it over the years. It is now a 6,000-square-foot garden and orchard. How did you personally become involved with BPP? I was at the meeting where the idea was first raised. I liked the idea and got involved right away. What is your current role within the organization, and what duties does it involve? As project chairman, I have the pleasure of coordinating the wonderful volunteers who make the project happen. We have about 100 active volunteers, covering all three areas of our project – the donation sites, the tree-picking team, and the garden. It’s my job to place new volunteers and to make sure the volunteers have the resources and the organizational structure needed to do their job. What communities does the project serve? The project serves low-income families and seniors living in the Poway Unified School District – Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, and 4S Ranch. Most of the produce is distributed by the nonprofit Friends and Family Community Connection. We also contribute to the food pantry at The Community Food Connection. (Note: Despite similar names, these are separate organizations.) Can you tell us about the Backyard Produce Gardens and Orchard? Where is it, and who maintains it? The Backyard Produce Garden is located on the grounds of Sunshine Care Senior Living, at the end of Monte Vista Rd. in Poway. Sunshine Care provides the land, the water, and the expertise of its Manager of Horticulture, Roy Wilburn. Sunshine Care also hosts an annual fundraiser for the project.

The garden consists of 17 rows, each about 40 feet long, plus an adjacent orchard. It operates year-round. In the summer, we grow tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans, cucumbers, and melons. In the winter, we grow broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, peas, kale, and chard. The orchard gives us apples, nectarines, plums, and peaches. The garden is tended entirely by volunteers who generously give their time and energy, knowing that all produce will be donated to others. The volunteers are organized into small teams. Each team comes once a week on its assigned day and works an hour or so, so the garden is tended every day. What is the most rewarding thing about your role? The most challenging? The most rewarding thing for all of us on the project is knowing that local children, families, and seniors who might not be able to afford fresh produce are able to enjoy the fresh produce we provide. Our biggest challenge is getting the word out so everyone knows there’s a good home for their unneeded backyard produce. We’re grateful to ZCode Magazines for helping us do that. What are BPP’s primary goals, both short-term and long-term? Our primary goal, both short-term and long-term, is to increase the amount of produce that we collect, pick, and grow. Sharing fresh produce is our way of sharing good health with our neighbors. What have been some of the organization’s most memorable achievements over the years? Last year, we reached a milestone none of us could have imagined at the start. We surpassed 100 tons of fresh produce donated to our local food pantries. Even better, we’re well on our way to our next 100 tons. How can community members get involved or support the project? Community members can get involved by bringing backyard produce to one of our donation sites, by inviting our tree-picking team to come and harvest their trees, or by volunteering with us on the project. Anyone interested can contact us through our website at www.backyardproduceproject.org Each year in June, Sunshine Care hosts a fundraiser barbecue for our project. It’s held at the Backyard Produce Garden. This year’s event will be Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. Community members are welcome. Our website www.backyardproduceproject.org has more information. Is there anything else you would like to add for our readers? Our project started with a simple idea. It has grown because of the generosity of the community. We see it getting better and better. 

n 2008, Debbie Solomon wanted to translate her background in gymnastics and children’s education into a unique enterprise. She started by purchasing a school bus and turning it into a mini, mobile gymnastics studio, allowing her to bring her love of fitness to families across San Diego. The next step was creative design of a facility that is trusted, safe, clean, and highly engaging, sparking the imagination of young children and satisfying the needs of today’s parent in an appealing and adult-friendly space. Together with her husband and business partner, Darren Solomon, they opened their first gym, and Kid Ventures was born. “Kid Ventures has a mission of being a positive space for families just starting out,” said CEO Darren, “where they can make new friends, meet up with old friends, learn, grow, laugh, and celebrate those precious few years of early childhood.” As parents themselves, Debbie and Darren saw the need for an environment where kids could freely flex their imaginations in a safe setting, and give parents the opportunity to remain nearby yet be able to unwind and partake in a café setting, mingling with friends. The result was Kid Ventures, an 8,000-square-foot open play area that is a boutique-style enrichment center/indoor play area combined with parent café, providing a one-of-a-kind family experience. “Children are encouraged by a staff of talented and certified ‘edutainers’ to explore in kid-friendly locales such as 46 • 92127MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2019

Open Monday through Saturday, Kid Ventures offers enrichment classes, open creative playtime, preschool classes, and Kids Night Out events. Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday, Kid Ventures closes for private birthday parties, which have been voted #1 by San Diego families for multiple years in a row. Kid Ventures also recently launched a preschool, which is focused on one-on-one attention and learning. A big goal one day is to have a Kid Ventures inside every children’s hospital around the country as a nonprofit – being a part of the healing process for children with life-threatening illnesses. “This is the core behind everything that is Kid Ventures,” Darren affirmed, “to make a difference in the lives of families everywhere.” This summer, Kid Ventures is expanding horizons with a series of exciting, fun-filled summer camps. DIGITAL MUSIC: HOW CAN I CREATE IT? I

n the last decade the face of digital music recording has changed dramatically. Now, for a modest budget, a bedroom producer can have all of the tools necessary to make a great sounding recording. There’s only one issue… how do you use all this stuff?! Finding the DAW (digital audio workstation) that’s right for you can be a daunting enough task, but knowing the ins and outs of your software can take years to master without guidance. The best bet for any aspiring producer is targeted, hands-on training, customized to their program preferences, learning styles, and experience. YouTube might have a slew of videos, but it’s a distant second to an expert instructor with hands-on training. Luckily, Studio West employs a team of experienced engineers and producers that are happy to show students the ropes. One-onone instruction at Studio West offers aspiring creatives direct answers, not just to broad, easily searchable questions, but specific difficulties with workflow. Offering help in

topics including production and arrangement, mixing and recording, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio, the team of experts knows that one-on-one lessons leads to progress in tracks production fairly quickly. Studio West offers one-on-one instruction options to all ages in addition to their year-long post-secondary diploma in audio production. Another not-to-miss opportunity is the Youth Programs, offered over seven individual weeks of summer camps. Pair this with the school year Production Workshop – a quarterly collective of talented kids meeting once a week to produce incredible music – and your teen has a head start in this amazing industry. If you want to up your game, hands-on training is your best bet! 

Del Norte Theater Arts

D

el Norte theater arts never fail to disappoint. For years now, the theater department has been pleasing audiences with their productions throughout the year, typically consisting of a play, a musical, and a one-act festival. This year, Del Norte performed Twelve Angry Jurors in the fall, My Fair Lady (musical) in winter, and recently, their sixth annual spring One-Act Festival, in which all students, regardless of theater background, were encouraged to audition. The One-Act Festival is a student-directed production

with multiple plays each under an hour in length. This year’s production consisted of play genres ranging from mysteries to fairy tales. The production, along with the other two productions this year, has been a wonderful success, reaping in well-deserved praise for the department. There are many reasons for students to join theater, one of which being the opportunity to make new friends. The theater department sees itself as a large family welcoming to all. In addition, Mrs. DeYoung, who is the head of the drama

department, is well-liked by her students for her hospitality and kindness. She always encourages students to join Del Norte theater. Lastly, it is a great opportunity to be part of a large project with a lot of great people. As junior Natalie Jimenez put it, “It’s really cool to be a part of something bigger than just yourself!” 

Kimiya Ghassemzadeh is a junior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine.

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // COACH CHRIS As far back as I can remember, sports have always been a part of who I am – from baseball and basketball to football and surfing. But there was just something extra special about soccer that lit a fire inside me that still burns today. I have four daughters, and the day I became a dad I knew I would teach them about sports in hopes that they, too, would find that same passion. They did; each one played soccer, so coaching became a natural progression for me. I started coaching in 2014 and eventually found Force FC. I like their possession-based style and the family environment they foster, which is how I feel about my teams. I treat each one as an extension of my family. I want each individual player to know that I care, and although mistakes happen in training or games, I tell them it's not whether they make a mistake or not, it's how they react that makes them a great teammate and person. While motivation is key, once they believe in themselves and put in the work, they’ll realize success will follow. Take care of the little things and big things will happen. When I’m not on the soccer field, I’m reading, watching a game, golfing, snowboarding, and spending time with my wife and kids.

FUN FOR EVERYONE Belmont Park Has It All! by SAMANTHA EDWARDS | photos courtesy of 123rf.com

M

ission Beach’s iconic wooden Giant Dipper Roller Coaster has been a fixture in San Diego for nearly 95 years. While the coaster and some other historic elements of what was originally called the Mission Beach Amusement Center remain today, the modern-day Belmont Park is now equipped with everything your family needs for a full summer day of amusement and fun. Admission to the park itself is free – tickets for rides and attractions are available separately. For more information visit www.belmontpark.com. 

NEARBY

In addition to classics like the roller coaster, a carousel, and bumper cars, Belmont Park is home to a number of thrill rides with names like Control Freak, Beach Blaster, Octotron, Tilt-a-Whirl, Vertical Plunge, and more.

Looking for more? Other exciting attractions include laser tag, rock climbing, a sky ropes course, an escape room, mini golf, arcade games, carnival-style games, and the Xanadu 7D Theater, complete with stunning digital effects and motion seats.

If all the fun has you working up an appetite, take a quick snack break with grab-andgo tacos, corn dogs, pretzels, burgers, pizza, ice cream, or Dole Whip. Or sit down to a heartier meal at one of the park’s three full-service beachfront restaurants.

Check out the local shops for everything from beachy clothes, bathing suits, and sunglasses to beach toys, towels, and souvenirs.

The park abuts the Mission Beach Boardwalk, which offers plenty of entertainment in its own right. You can rent bikes, roller blades, skateboards, surfboards, and anything else you might want for a day in the sun.
