FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 10, N O. 6 TM
A Decade Already?
I
t all started with a passion for our community. We didn’t know exactly what we were about to get ourselves into, but after months of napkin scratching (often accompanied by a glass of wine or two at one of our favorite local restaurants), the concept of ZCode Magazines was born – starting with the debut of 92127 Magazine. It’s hard to believe that the first issue was delivered to homes 10 years ago this month. To put it in perspective, our oldest daughter was in middle school (now she’s studying for her MBA in college), and our two youngest kiddos – now both in high school – were only four and five years old. Where has the time gone? The concept of our local zip code magazines was simple: publish magazines about the community that people want to read. And that simple concept is still our company mission statement to this very day. People are proud to live, work, and play in their communities, and we are excited to deliver magazines that showcase everything local. Over the past 10 years, we have published 561 issues. That’s more than 30,000 individual magazine pages that have been designed and printed! We’ve had the privilege to spotlight more than 500 families, more than 500 students, thousands of local businesses, and countless other interesting hyper-local stories. By creating bigger-than-life printed editorial features, people are proud to have their stories memorialized and often keep copies of “their” magazine on display for all to see. In fact, ZCode Magazines articles can be found framed and hanging on the walls of local businesses, showcased in the homes of local families, students, and volunteers, and prominently displayed in our local schools. 92127 is your community, and 92127 Magazine is your magazine. Be sure to stay in touch and recommend articles. Derrick Breaux And we love to receive photos! Also, take a moment to thank Publisher and support the local businesses that participate in this magazine. We wouldn’t be able to publish 92127 Magazine without their enthusiastic support. It’s been a great decade! We look forward to serving our local communities for years to come. Thanks for being a reader and supporting 92127 Magazine!
Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
Encouraging
Education Andy Achterkirchen Volunteers His Time, Talent, and Treasure to Educating Underserved Students by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Denise Scatena
T
eachers can really be catalysts for students, a fact that hasn’t been lost on Andy Achterkirchen. For 20 years, he’s been volunteering one night per week tutoring students, mostly in math – pre-calculus and calculus – but he’s also been known to work with kids in chemistry and physics. In 1999, he was tutoring at the Malcolm X Library when he learned about the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), an organization breaking the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college. BLCI’s after-school programs begin in third grade and continue through high school. Andy had noticed through his library tutoring that most of his students had the ability to learn the subject matter, but their classroom instruction, for whatever reason, wasn’t enough. He transitioned his volunteer service to BLCI and has been there ever since. “It is very rewarding to see that students whom I have tutored have gone to university, graduated, and are now working as professionals,” Andy shared. Name: Karl Andrew “Andy” Achterkirchen A retired engineer, Andy Profession: Retired Engineer and Professional Volunteer worked in Los Angeles designing Community: Del Mar communication systems for Hobbies & Interests: Volunteering, traveling, fitness spacecraft, then continued in San Favorite Local When I go to lunch with friends near home, I often go Diego, managing 200 engineers Spots: to the West End Bar and Kitchen on Carmel Valley Rd. designing aircraft communication It has a great lunch menu and very pleasant ambiance systems. Now, in addition to tutoring, he overlooking the Los Peñasquitos Lagoon. And nearby, serves on the BLCI Advisory Committee, Trattoria Ponte Vecchio is great for dinner. and is a major contributor to their capital campaign, which will allow the organization to move into a permanent location in 2020 while still remaining in the neighborhood. He also tutors at the UCSD Preuss School and serves on their Academic Advisory Committee, in addition to serving on the boards for Planned Parenthood and a health nonprofit in Tijuana since 2004. He also supports other organizations that help people in need in a variety of ways, including SAY San Diego, Home Start, ACLU, and Project Concern International. “Low levels of education are associated with crime, low civic engagement, and poor health outcomes,” Andy said. “Education is the answer. I encourage others to get involved in our education system either as a tutor or a mentor – whether it is our local schools or nonprofit organizations like BLCI – with your time, talent, or treasure to grant the supports needed to lift all the youth in our communities.” When he is not volunteering his time as a tutor, Andy enjoys traveling (he has been to about 50 countries, including a 15-month Know a volunteer that should be profiled in 92127 Magazine? stint living in Australia for work) and fitness (he has a rowing machine, stationary bike, and a home gym which he uses daily). Arts in Education
POWAY ONSTAGE SUPPORTS YOUTH ACCESS TO ARTS EDUCATION
P
oway OnStage’s 20192020 Arts in Education Initiative has plenty in store for local elementary students. This season’s events include two bus-in shows for Poway Unified School District (PUSD) students. The first, Pirate School: Follow Your Compass, took place in October, and the second, Catapult Shadow Dance Company, will be March 29. Poway OnStage provides study guides for the teachers attending, and performers give Q&A sessions for students after each show. “We are so proud of this partnership with the Poway Unified School District, and excited for this year’s offerings,” said Michael Rennie, Poway OnStage President and CEO. “In addition to our more established programs, we now offer students a chance to come in to a performance with a deeper understanding of what they are about to see, and an opportunity to have
an up-close-and-personal experience with the artists.” Poway OnStage established the Arts in Education Initiative in 1999, at a time when PUSD budget cuts were substantially impacting music programs. “Our board at the time felt that as the stewards of Poway’s performing arts community, we had an obligation to respond to the reduction in arts programs in our schools,” Rennie said. The initiative continues to thrive and integrate with state standards through individual donations, corporate philanthropy, and grants. Programs include a free musical theater camp every March for grades K-12 and Introduction to Instruments for fourth graders. Learn more and sign up for programs at www.powayonstage.org/ arts-in-education.

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with MEET THE SAN DIEGO FORCE COACHES Coach at San Diego Force FC // COACH ASHLey ashley breaux / San Diego Force
Soccer has been a part of my life since I was very young, and I knew it would follow me no matter where life takes me. I have played competitively since elementary school, was on my high school varsity team for four years, played in college, and continue to play to this day. The passion I have for this game has never faltered and being an influence on young minds as a coach has only strengthened that passion. I appreciate the close-knit family that Force FC provides its players and coaches alike. All the coaches are willing to help each other out, and players are motivated to learn in a supportive and progressive environment. I strive for my players to be the best they can be and to always provide them with constructive criticism and encouragement. I love watching them grow! I also coach the junior varsity team at Del Norte High School, which allows me the unique opportunity to work with many of the same players year-round. I recently graduated from CSU San Marcos with a biology degree. I’m currently working on my master’s in supply chain management, then plan on going to dental school. In my free time I like to go rock crawling in Big Bear, ride quads in the desert, and spend time with family and friends. You may see me around the local fields supporting my brother and sister, who are following in my footsteps. We are a soccer-loving family!

ur team takes pride in providing quality care in our community in a comfortable and convenient manner. It is our goal to change how San Diego thinks and feels about the dental experience,” revealed Dr. Spencer Mauseth, who, along with Dr. Chris Pham owns the 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics practice. At 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, three core values define the practice – Be Friendly, Be Helpful, and Be Better. “We aim to treat patients and staff like family, and it is very important for us to go above and beyond for our patients. Our team also works hard every day to challenge ourselves to grow and provide the best service to patients and their families,” stated Dr. Spencer. At 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, two specialties are housed at the same location, offering parents more convenience and flexibility when scheduling appointments. The practice also provides high quality comprehensive dental care, coordinating dental health needs with the growth of children’s jaws and bones. “Our office embraces technology because it makes the patient experience more comfortable and less invasive. This is so important in dental health care, especially when dealing with children and their parents,” said Dr. Spencer. The practice uses child-size X-rays and child-friendly instruments and equipment. Headsets are provided at each dental chair, as well as flat-mounted TVs, so that children can enjoy a movie during their visit. Dr. Spencer is joined at the practice by Dr. Kim Lugtu and Dr. Sameen Zarrabi. Dr. Spencer is very active and well-known in the dental community and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is committed to teaching patients and their parents about the science and art of cavity prevention. Dr. Kim is a graduate of the UCLA Dental School and knew at a young age she wanted to help people and give back. She loves connecting with her young patients and helping to keep their smiles healthy. Dr. Zarrabi, also known as Dr. Z by her patients, joined the practice in April 2018. According to Dr. Spencer, Dr. Z’s warm and composed chair-side manner, outstanding credentials, and acute attention to detail made her the perfect addition to the team. The 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics team is also active in the local community, often visiting preschools and elementary schools to give educational (and fun!) presentations on oral health. We’ve had the pleasure of knowing Tim and Kristine since 2012. They came highly recommended to us when we needed an agent to sell our condo. Their professionalism, industry knowledge, integrity and experience are second to none. We were so excited to work with them again this year to find our brand new home in Del Sur. We couldn’t imagine entrusting such an important purchase to anyone but the Skoglin’s. As expected, they kept us grounded throughout what otherwise could have been a stressful process. They educated us along the way, always had our best interest in mind, and were able to keep us within budget with their skilled negotiating. - Bridget & Jason Smith CalBRE #01525815

RB Resident Joins Charity Board
National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
Rancho Bernardo resident Paul Fitzgerald recently joined the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD) board of trustees. Fitzgerald is senior manager of strategic sourcing at Qualcomm and also serves on the board for the International Facility Managers Association. He joins RMHCSD along with four other new board members – Steven Bernstein, Brandy Bullen, Jessie Green, and Adrienne Hoehn Sherman. RMHCSD provides a home away from home for families with children being treated at local hospitals. The Ronald McDonald House provides overnight guest rooms, a kitchen, and a children’s play area to help create a comfortable sanctuary during difficult times. “Each of our new trustees bring skills and experience that will be invaluable to expanding and enhancing the impact of our organization,” said Chuck Day, President and CEO of RMHCSD. “They join us during a significant time, as the need for Ronald McDonald House’s services far exceeds our capacity of 56-bedroom suites. Every night, approximately 30 families who need a room must be placed on our waitlist, while accessing our supportive services through our Family Care Center.” Learn more at www.rmhcsd.org.
Twenty-eight Del Norte High School students were recently named 2020 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation: Ayesha Aslam-Mir, Priyanka Babu, Mansi Basmatkar, Arushi Dogra, Julia Du, Sravani Duggirala, Ellie Feng, Lucy Gao, Hazelle Gunawan, Vivian Huynh, Michael Iter, Kyle Ke, Priya Khandelwal, Rupin Mittal, Nora Mousa, John Nienstedt, Chan Park, Pranav Patil, Nabeel Shahid, Andrew Strattot, Keerthana Sundar, Pranav Thokachichu, Manasvi Vora, Andrew Wang, Brandon Wang, Skyler Wu, Helen Xu, and Evan Zhou. Approximately 16,000 students were selected as semifinalists from a pool of over 1.5 million entrants from 21,000 high schools across the country based on their scores on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Over 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level, where they will be in the running for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Final selection is based on students’ skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in college programs. Finalists will be notified in February, and winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. The 2020 recipients will join more than 345,000 other distinguished students who have earned the Merit Scholar title in the past 65 years. Learn more at www.nationalmerit.org.

Maranatha Christian Schools Unveils New Field photo by Steve Shuey
92127’s Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) celebrated the first home football game of the season against La Jolla Country Day with a long-awaited new turf field. It’s been over a year since MCS student athletes have played a home football game on their own fields. The opening ceremonies included Maranatha Chapel Pastor Ray Bentley, Superintendent Jess Hetherington, MCS Athletic Director Steve Whitley, California Senator Brian Jones, the MCS School Board, and representatives from Hellas Construction, who installed the new field. MCS is the first sports complex in San Diego to use the company’s GEO Plus Infill. The new sports complex includes bleacher seating for 1,000 people on the football field, which is also designed for soccer. The baseball field and combination soccer and softball fields will soon be completed as well. “The completion of this multi-use field project is a game-changer for the Athletic Program,” said Whitley. “Not only that, but these fields will make a tremendous impact to the 4S Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, and Rancho Santa Fe communities.”
Community Thanksgiving Luncheon The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation’s (RBCF) Annual Community Thanksgiving Luncheon will take place Friday, Nov. 22 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The reception and silent auction will open at 11 a.m., and lunch and entertainment will begin at noon. The RBCF has been dedicated to supporting and improving Rancho Bernardo since its founding in 1988. The organization announces grant honorees at the Thanksgiving Luncheon every year – in 2018, more than $80,000 was awarded. The event is a community favorite tradition to kick off the holiday season, and businesses, nonprofit groups, and community leaders have a chance to meet, mingle, and contribute to the cause. Early bird tickets are $50 and available until Nov. 15. Beginning Nov. 16, tickets will be $60. Learn more and find tickets at www.sdfoundation.org/rbthanksgiving or at www.rbcommunityfoundation.org.

rowing up in today’s world may look very different than a generation ago, but the foundations remain the same. Teens need to build knowledge, strengthen character, and learn responsibility. At Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS), these core values are the foundations of the collegepreparatory education fostered in a faithbased community. Cathedral Catholic focuses on an integrative curriculum that develops the whole student – spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. In partnership with parents, the school forms an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence. The CCHS community is committed to creating graduates who carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love for learning on their continuing

journey of personal growth. Graduates of Cathedral Catholic have attended Notre Dame, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Duke, and Stanford, as well as many of the other top universities in the country. The school hosts over 1,600 students, and the diverse student body is supported with over four million dollars in tuition assistance. Cultural and economic diversity in the student body is a cornerstone for Cathedral Catholic. Served by highly dedicated administration, faculty, and staff, students engage in learning and growth both inside and outside the classroom. In addition to the classrooms and labs, the campus has a library, theater, chapel, ceramics studio, music room, gymnasium, sports stadium, aquatics center, and multiple sports fields. CCHS is accredited by the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and holds
membership with the College Board. In 2015 and 2017, the school was awarded the status of an Apple Distinguished School, recognized for its innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. While the world today’s students are entering has greatly changed, the foundation that students need to succeed have not. At CCHS, the core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility remain strong and stable. At St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, each child is recognized and appreciated for their unique qualities and supported in developing their God-given gifts and talents. All aspects of the school environment are infused with Catholic values. Each day begins with outdoor community prayer, prayers for special intentions, reflection on the Catholic virtue of the week, reflection on special feast days and seasons in the liturgical year, salute to the flag, and patriotic song. Twice a month, the school community celebrates liturgy at the parish church four miles from the St. Gregory campus. Students are involved in liturgy preparation and actively participate at mass in various capacities. The school curriculum incorporates spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and kinesthetic learning experiences through teaching of six core subjects
(religion, language arts, literature, mathematics, social studies, and science), as well as fine arts and physical education. The religion curriculum is aligned with the Diocesan Curriculum Course Content Guidelines, as are all other subjects. “The combination of both Common Core Standards and Diocesan Curriculum Guidelines makes for a challenging academic program with an integrated Catholic identity,” said Principal Maeve O’Connell. Stewardship and service are also integral to the Catholic identity. Students organize, plan, and participate in a wide variety of local and global service opportunities throughout the school year. “Our students are called to be productive citizens who recognize their ability to make a difference in our world today and in the future,” affirmed Principal O’Connell. St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is WCEA/ WASC-accredited. Faculty and staff embrace all learning styles and work to develop instructional strategies to meet each student’s individual needs. Above all, students are inspired to realize their Godgiven potential and embrace a faith-filled future of leadership, stewardship, and lifelong learning.

THE GRAUER SCHOOL
S
ituated on a six-acre natural paradise in Encinitas, alive with native plants and animals and a light coastal breeze, The Grauer School campus itself serves as the starting point for its expeditionary learning tradition. Students are encouraged to use the school campus and the world around them, from the nearby San Elijo Lagoon to Kenya, as primary resources for generating curiosity and experiencing authentic learning. Founded in 1991, Grauer focuses on helping students develop their unique voice, discover their passions, and take ownership over their own learning. The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from one-room schoolhouses to Peking University. These traditions have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great traditions and movements to infuse all we keep learning and synthesizing,” said Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs. “The result is a campus of purpose, optimism, and inspiration. We commit to continuing to develop the finest, most engaged, humanitarian independent
school in the world. And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are succeeding at their top choice colleges.” Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, self-advocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, community service activities, art, expeditions, and student-created programs. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world. Grauer’s expeditionary learning and arts programs are across the curriculum. The school also launched its Environmental Stewardship Pledge this year, dedicating the 2019-2020 school year to promoting ecological sustainability and stewardship in the school community and beyond. The resolution impacts every aspect of the school, from in- and out-ofclass curriculum to school culture and finance. “We know our students are not inheriting the world or climate we inherited,” said Grauer. “We have a moral imperative to prepare them courageously.” As the longest-serving independent school in North County San Diego, The Grauer School fosters nurturing relationships between teachers and students, giving learners 99th percentile levels of connection and engagement so that they are empowered in their education. “In a world that often seems to put standards before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student,” said Abplanalp-Diggs. “Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.”

tarting its 24th year, The Nativity School is nestled in the heart of Rancho Santa Fe, conveniently located off the I-5 freeway between the Del Mar Heights and Via de la Valle exits. The school serves students in preschool through eighth grade through a challenging yet nurturing curriculum that helps to prepare students not just for high school, but for the rest of their lives. The Nativity School strives to guide the intellectual formation in such a manner that the hearts and minds of each student have the potential to develop a steadfast, critical, and reasoned faith grounded in the Catholic tradition. Nativity’s low teacher-to-student ratio allows them to adapt to the many different learning styles of its students and to live the mission of the school and parish. The school offers specialized teachers in math, science, art, music, technology, and physical education and enrichment programming to complement a variety of student interests. The Nativity School is accredited by WASC/WCEA and employs a credentialed, dedicated, and friendly faculty and staff. The Nativity School believes that knowledge is created through the transformation of experience and therefore they offer plenty of leadership and service learning opportunities. All interested parents are encouraged to visit The Nativity School – they think you’re going to like what you find.
MONTESSORI CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
M
ontessori Child Development Center (MCDC) equips preschool and kindergarten children to create extensive knowledge of their world through exploration and observation. The child-centered environment encourages children to be self-motivated and behave as active participants in their own learning. Students work individually or in small, self-selected groups, where they teach, collaborate, and help each other. Highly qualified teachers observe and offer direction and support while promoting independence, self-direction, and self-discipline, resulting in children who are engaged in learning and eager to advance. Learning at MCDC extends beyond the classroom to the gifts of the natural world. Situated in a large house re-designed for school use, surrounded by trees, vegetable and flower gardens, selected farm animals, and a grassy play area, the Montessori environment gives children the opportunity to grow emotionally, socially, cognitively, and creatively. “I believe young children thrive in an educational environment where they are treated like the unique individuals they are and are guided by teachers who love children and understand their needs,” said Marijane Schafer, Founder and Director of MCDC Poway. “I opened the school in 1978 to provide parents in our community with a quality educational alternative for their children. We have remained intentionally small so that we can maintain a close relationship with the children and their families. As ever, the staff and I are committed to giving every child an opportunity to discover and develop to their potential.”

VILLAGE CHURCH PRESCHOOL
A
lifelong journey of learning and inspiration begins at the Village Church Preschool (VCP). Children ages two to five can play, learn, and grow through the school’s focus on developing the whole child. “A young child is constantly learning through experimentation, exploration, and having the need to solve problems. Our goal is to help foster the development of a child’s critical thinking skills and ability to communicate by providing meaningful opportunities to experiment, question, and play,” said Director Nancy Betts. Teachers get to know each child as an individual, developing unique curriculum to engage and inspire each child’s interests. STEAM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – feature prominently in the curriculum. VCP’s rich history speaks to a legacy of support and achievement. The school was founded in 1962 by young moms at the Village Church seeking the perfect place for their children to learn and play – today, some of the earliest students are now sending their own students to VCP. The highly educated teaching staff is part of that legacy as well. “Our staff are experienced, passionate educators who view children as valuable, competent learners,” Director Betts shared. “Our average length of employment for our teachers is 20 years. In short, our teachers love teaching, and they love teaching here!” VCP knows it takes a village to raise a child, and teachers build meaningful relationships with the entire family. Supportive, respectful relationships between children and their peers, teachers, and families are vital for healthy development. “Our school embraces each family to create a welcoming environment and inspire a sense of community and fellowship,” Director Betts said. THE BISHOP’S SCHOOL
F
rom the border to Oceanside, The Bishop’s School brings together a diverse and thriving student and faculty population. The School was founded in 1909 as a girls’ boarding school when sisters Ellen Browning Scripps and Eliza Virginia Scripps joined Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson to create an institution committed to an ideal that still holds true today: School should be an “open door to knowledge.” In 1971, the School merged with the San Miguel School for Boys. Today, Bishop’s serves 800 students in grades 6 through 12. San Diego’s only independent middle and high school affiliated with the Episcopal Church, Bishop’s is an inclusive community where students come from more than 70 schools representing diverse religious, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This school year, 49 percent of students self-identify as people of color and 20 percent receive more than $3 million in financial aid. Chaplain Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato said, “We emphasize compassion for all people, respect for the dignity of every human being, and the calls to love our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace in the world.” Bishop’s programs are designed to meet students’ individual needs – both academically and emotionally, as student well-being is the top priority. Academic options, levels and paths are offered to best fit every student’s abilities, interests and potential, ensuring readiness and success in college and beyond. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom, including academic competitions, international travel, a peer support group, affinity groups, guest speakers and a community service program, to name a few. There are 72 different sports teams, 40 performing arts shows per year in dance, theater, and choral and instrumental music, and visual arts possibilities from photography to animation and more. Learning, leading and acting with open hearts and minds, Bishop’s students engage in the classroom, the community, and the world.

Here, students convene around a table with their teacher rather than sitting in rows of desks. They engage through listening, asking questions, and learning from their peers and teacher rather than a lecture. “The Harkness teaching method fosters the development of critical thinking skills and provides a supportive academic forum in which students can express their ideas,” explained Dr. Bob Ogle, Head of School. Welcome to Pacific Ridge School, an independent private school serving students from 7th to 12th grade. The school opened its doors in 2007 with a mission to nurture both the minds and hearts of students. To meet this goal, the educational model marries academic excellence with civic responsibility and global engagement. A cornerstone of the Pacific Ridge experience is the global education component, where every academic year culminates in a class or small group trip. “Global issues are woven throughout the curriculum and the last two weeks of the school year are reserved for our travel education program,” Dr. Ogle shared. “These travel courses are themed for different kinds of experiences – cultural exploration,
language immersion, service, academic study, or a combination.” From studying U.S. government in Washington, D.C. to ancient and modern cultures in China, Pacific Ridge students have traveled across the U.S. and to 58 countries. Last year, 11th and 12th graders studied, explored, and engaged with local residents in Kenya, Colombia, Vietnam, Iceland, Italy, Vienna and Prague, South Africa, the Galapagos Islands, and Austin, TX. The daily engagement and global interactions are led by a group of passionate faculty members. Teachers are also coaches, service learning and club advisors, and trip leaders. Their varied interactions with students create a bond beyond academic learning. “Due to these roles and the relationship building that takes place in a Harkness classroom, our teachers build multi-faceted relationships with students, fostering trust and mentorship,” Dr. Ogle noted. Interactions around the classroom table and around the world set Pacific Ridge graduates apart from their peers. “Our graduates are articulate, thoughtful, compassionate, and extremely prepared to take advantage of all college has to offer,” said Dr. Ogle. “They are globally aware, comfortable in many different environments, and receptive to learning from diverse perspectives.”

t Army and Navy Academy (ANA), learning is more than academics. Boys in grades 7 through 12 are encouraged to discover their unique selves and pursue independence and leadership in all that they do. The year-round boarding school environment allows for structure, hierarchy, and order so that each boy can shine brightly as an individual while being part of a collective team. “As young men find out where they shine and gain profound self-awareness, we witness their growth, whether it is igniting a deeper passion for learning, scoring the goal, acquiring a leadership role, forging new friendships, or applying to college,” said Major General Arthur Bartell, ANA President. Leadership is a cornerstone of the Army and Navy Academy experience. Military programs foster camaraderie, a sense of belonging, and many opportunities for service and leadership. Though less than one percent of ANA graduates enter military service, 100 percent of Cadets continue their personal journey prepared for future leadership roles, complimented by a strong sense of independence, responsibility, and moral and ethical values. The core curriculum at ANA is based on the University of California’s entrance requirements, and

the college preparatory curriculum includes Advanced Placement and honors courses. Furthermore, ANA operates as a Gurian Model school, utilizing instructional techniques tailored specifically to how boys’ brains work, learn, and become motivated to reach their full potential. Students are also offered exciting electives such as aviation and computer science, visual and performing arts opportunities, a robust athletics program, a variety of clubs, and supervised weekend trips. Perhaps the brightest highlight of the Academy’s activities is the privately lifeguarded beachfront along the west edge of the Carlsbad campus, where students are encouraged to take advantage of aquatic activities. All students are taught to put ANA’s core values of honor, respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion, and gratitude into action every day. “It is our goal to ensure that Cadets find their voices and uncover their personalities before going out into the world where they will have to endure and overcome all the obstacles that life presents,” said President Bartell. “We encourage Cadets to test themselves, push beyond their comfort zones, and prove that they can be everything they aspire to be.”

FROM THE DENTIST
TOOTH-HEALTHY FOOD DECISIONS by DR. CHRIS PHAM, 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
S
oft drink consumption has increased dramatically in recent decades. It’s become a daily habit for a growing number of people, especially kids. A steady diet of soft drinks is a leading cause of tooth decay, enamel erosion, and obesity. It may even increase the risk of developing diabetes. Soft drinks contain a large amount of sugar, which causes tooth decay by producing acid when it comes in contact with the mouth’s natural bacteria. This acid dissolves tooth enamel, eventually causing cavities. But why are soft drinks so much worse than many other snacks? A single 12-ounce can of soda contains up to 12 teaspoons of sugar! A Big Gulp can contain 63 teaspoons of sugar! Adding to the problem is that these large drinks are usually consumed over an extended period of time,
prolonging the acid attack on the teeth. The acid attack lasts about 20 minutes, and starts over with every sip. If you have a receding gum line, this acid can damage the roots of the teeth. This is particularly a concern for adults. Even diet or sugar free soft drinks can raise havoc with the teeth. While they don’t contain sugar for the bacteria to use to produce acid, they do contain their own acid which is added to enhance the flavor of the drink. This acid can damage the tooth enamel to almost the same extent as the sugared drinks.
• Drink water instead of sugared drinks. It has no sugar, no acid, and no calories. • Get regular checkups and cleanings to remove bacteria buildup (plaque) and calculus (tartar). Remember to floss.
How can you reduce decay? • Drink soft drinks in moderation. • Don’t sip for extended periods of time. Ongoing sipping prolongs sugar and acid attacks on the teeth. • Do not drink soft drinks immediately before bedtime because the liquid pools in the mouth and coats the teeth with sugar and acid. Teeth are particularly susceptible to acid attack when you are asleep and there is little saliva flow.

Poinsettias With a Purpose
ANNUAL POINSETTIA FUNDRAISER TO SUPPORT NON-OPIOID PAIN MANAGEMENT PROGRAM by LIZ ONUFER
T
his holiday season, Poinsettias With a Purpose will be raising money for the new non-opioid inpatient pain treatment program at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. The Rancho Bernardo Unit of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary hosts the annual fundraising sale of florist-quality poinsettias. “This is a wonderful opportunity to give back using the same funds that you are planning to spend for holiday decor or gifts. The quality of the plants is amazing, which makes it a win-win, especially for the kids,” said Marcie Sands, RB Unit’s publicity chairwoman. The cutting-edge pain management program is the first of its kind in Southern California. “Pain is a nearly ever-present part of everyday life for at least 20-35 percent of kids and adolescents worldwide. For many children their chronic pain becomes completely debilitating,” said Anke Reineke, Ph.D., director of the program. The Specialized Hospital Chronic Pain Management Program at Rady Children’s Hospital is working in partnership with New Jersey Children’s Specialized Hospital to offer the program that emphasizes pain management through a whole-person, multidisciplinary approach. Prices for poinsettias range from $16 for a 15 to 17-inch plant up to $54 for a three to four-foot tall plant. Orders are being taken until Nov. 15, and plants arrive on Dec. 2 and 3. Orders can be placed at bit.do/PoinsettiasWithAPurpose or on their Facebook page at Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary-Rancho Bernardo Unit.

Brain Balance Addresses Challenges with a Drug-Free, Integrative Approach by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by Brain Balance

o single factor can point to a child’s success or, for that matter, their struggle. Raising children requires a holistic approach. So when kids are struggling – behaviorally, socially, academically – figuring out the underlying causes and pairing that with the right support can be a real challenge. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a drug-free, personalized, integrative approach to help children reach their full potential. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” owner Jon Pak explained. Using extensive brain research, Brain Balance creates individualized plans to strengthen the brain’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle

strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Extensive scientific research demonstrates that the brain is malleable,” Jon said. “Brain Balance has applied this research to develop a program that focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. They work with children with or without a diagnosis from pre-K to 12th grade who struggle behaviorally, socially, and academically. This includes but is not limited to lack of focus, impulsiveness, tantrums, learning challenges, lack of confidence, and challenging family/social relationships as well as with children diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, processing disorders, Asperger syndrome, high functioning autism (now considered a part of Autism Spectrum Disorder), and others. Jon was inspired to open Brain Balance of San Diego from his own experience. As a father of a child with special needs, Jon witnessed his son’s friends being treated with medication and struggling with the side effects without improvement. Jon opened the doors of Brain Balance to help families who did not know of options other than medication. The program is currently in 31 states and has served over 30,000 children. “Many of our center owners are parents of the children we’ve helped,” Jon shared. “They have personally experienced how Brain Balance has helped their children and wanted to provide that same opportunity to other parents.” Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, the Brain Balance program addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. The true testament to its success comes from the parents. Making friends, focusing in class, and improving self-esteem are only a few of the many successes that Brain Balance of San Diego hopes to share with other struggling children and their family. Jon acknowledged, “If you and your child are struggling and nothing has worked for you, there’s hope.”

Soaring to New Heights
A
s we have now approached the heart of the fall season, a group of Nighthawks at Del Norte High School is going through one of the most critical (and stressful) points of their high school career. Though they have reached the final stretch, it is by no means a smooth or easy road. These students, after working arduously for a straight three years, are finally going to be rewarded for their efforts. Yes, for senior Nighthawks at Del Norte High School, it’s college application season. Completing three years of merit at Del Norte has been no walk in the park, and Nighthawks are apt to tell you this. With the competitive rigor of its courses and extracurriculars, Del Norte is notable for academic and civic excellence. The high school strictly adheres to its mission statement, producing capable individuals who are ready to take on the future, whether that includes college or other plans. For those Nighthawks hoping to soar into college, it’s officially time for them to begin a new chapter of their lives. Deadlines are
approaching, or for the early birds, they have already passed in the form of early action/decision deadlines. Through supplemental questions, letters of recommendation, and standardized testing, students give colleges a glimpse into what they have to offer; with this year’s seniors, that’s no small amount! As Del Norte and other high schools around the country prepare for this next journey, we salute them for their achievements and hope for the best for them. Their aspirations to become the next generation of laboratory managers, aeronautical engineers, lawyers, and much more, are not far from reality anymore. Seniors, you’ve finished the hardest part. Now you just have to showcase your achievements!
Kimiya Ghassemzadeh is a senior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine.

What Opportunities Will Come With Lower Rates? by SCOTT VOAK

nterest rates are heading down again and are (at the writing) under 3.5% for a jumbo 30-year fixed mortgage (here’s hoping I didn’t just jinx it!). Most experts think we are in for a continued reduction over the next few years with some pretty smart people I know thinking we will get the 30-year rate under 3%. I see this creating opportunities for a lot of my clients. The obvious opportunity that will present itself is for many families who are “trapped” in their current house with a lot of equity but without the ability to qualify for a larger loan. Lower rates will bump qualifying amounts and allow people to move up to larger homes to accommodate families that
