hen I published my first community magazine, our oldest daughter was in the eighth grade. Our son was in kindergarten, and our youngest daughter hadn’t yet started school. The strange thing is that it feels like 2009 was just yesterday. Fast forward, and our oldest daughter is now a senior in college, our son is an eighth grader, and our youngest daughter is in seventh grade. As you know, I often write about time flying by. This past weekend marked another milestone for the Breaux household. Ashley, our oldest daughter, celebrated her 21st birthday! Much to our surprise, Ashley invited us to go out with her group of friends on her special night in downtown San Diego. After repeatedly asking her if she was sure about having her parents tag along, my wife and I reluctantly agreed to go (along with another lifelong friend of ours that Ashley refers to as Aunt Wendy). We needed another adult from our generation for moral support. The group started at a count of 15 people. We all had dinner at a restaurant downtown before Ubering to the first club. The intentions were to stick around for a little while and then head out. That plan didn’t work out so well, as we ended up staying for the duration of the evening. The night was filled with a variety of emotions. I was observing our baby girl in her adult environment for the very first time. Although we were very much interacting with the group, at times I felt like a fly on Derrick and his daughter Ashley the wall – silently observing and taking in the entire circa 2005. Time flies! experience. She was having a great time with her close friends, laughing, dancing, and celebrating. More of Ashley’s friends kept arriving. Some arrivals were clearly unexpected and a special surprise to her. The entire situation touched our hearts. There was one common theme – everyone was there to celebrate with her on her special day. It was at that moment that I realized our baby girl was grown up. Although some may see it as unconventional, we had a great time celebrating with our daughter and her friends that night. I would like to give a special thanks to Ashley’s friends for being such an important part of her life and enthusiastically welcoming us old people into their circle. I still don’t feel like I’m a “grown up” yet. In many aspects, I still feel the same way that I felt when I was a teenager. But make no mistake about it, watching my baby girl turn 21 years old definitely puts me one step closer in my search to feel grown up. Oh, to be young again…

FOUR MILITARY SPOUSES WIN COMPETITIVE COOKING SHOW

J

essica Saddler, Leah Jakosalem, Terri Alexander, and Traci Maloney have a lot in common – all are moms, military spouses, and talented cooks. The four joined forces on The F Word, a new competitive cooking show hosted by Gordon Ramsey. “Traci, Terri, Jessica, and I had a mindset from day one,” Leah explained. “We were strongly determined and motivated and just gave all we’ve got and went for it! Perk? It was witnessed on national TV!” Under the team name The Military Wives Club (MWC), the four not only won the episode competition, they came back to win the season finale and the $100,000 grand prize. The team didn’t all know each other before the show, but they were soon fast friends. “These military spouses are strong and capable

Traci elaborated, “We deal with so much going on and uncertainty at times with our lives and husband’s careers that we can always rely on one another to get through any obstacle that comes our way, and I really hope the audience saw that.” “The experience of working with the MWC is something that I will hold with extreme pride for the rest of my life,” Terri shared. “They are my sisters! Being a military spouse is what brought us together, and our bond will not let us part.” Jessica lives in Poway with her U.S. Marine Corps husband and their two children. F

or Eshan Sinha, living in 92127 is more than just proximity to the beach; it’s a connection to nature, marine life, and a cause much greater than himself. A junior at Del Norte High School, Eshan promotes awareness of endangered marine life through his photography. Eshan’s work first began receiving acclaim when he was just eight years old. “My first award-winning photo was of a school of dolphins frolicking around in the Channel Islands, CA,” he shared. “I had a manual Sony camera, a Christmas present from my parents.” Since that time, Eshan has continued to show his work and receive recognition, including the Museum of Photographic Arts Youth Exhibition and multiple awards at the San Diego County Fair. At the 4S Ranch Library, Eshan had a solo exhibition titled #ClicksForACause. He donated the proceeds of his photo sales to nonprofit organizations, “like Oceana, which champions the cause of the unspoken oceans and their inhabitants,” he shared. But Eshan’s extracurricular activities are not solely focused on his photography. He has been playing piano for eight years, achieving level seven of the Royal Conservatory Achievement Program. He is a member of the Del Norte High School robotics and speech and debate teams. Eshan has also been practicing taekwondo since second grade and recently earned his third degree black belt. At the dojo, he volunteers as an assistant coach, helping to instruct the junior students. For inspiration, Eshan turns to his parents. “They have always guided me on the right path and helped me at my lowest points – encouraging me to never give up,” Eshan said. He also looks to Steve Jobs, inspired by Jobs’s intelligence and perseverance. Eshan particularly likes Jobs’s quote about “the round pegs in the square holes, the ones who see things differently.” The quote resonates with Eshan, who acknowledged, “I always feel like I am a round peg in a square hole, a misfit. His desire to do something different intrigues me.” Name: Eshan Sinha (16) Today, Eshan continues to focus on School: Del Norte High School his photography and raising awareness for Grade: 11 endangered species. He looks ahead to Parents: Ranjan Sinha and Rinku Verma succeeding in high school and continuing Sibling: Vardaan (11) on to a good college. “A career in the field Favorite places Home, school, and the various parks of marine robotics is something that seems in 92127: and swimming pools attractive to me,” he said. tudents, staff, parents, and community members came together at Del Norte High School to honor U.S. military personnel and first responders. Military and First Responder Appreciation Night is a special varsity football game held every year, the highlight of which is the recognition ceremony for local heroes. This year, 32 honorees were invited to the pre-game dinner and festivities. The Nighthawks players wore personalized patriotic jerseys bearing the names of honorees, which were given to them after the game. 

HOLIDAY SMILES

‘Tis the Season for Keeping Your Kids’ Teeth Healthy

by SPENCER MAUSETH, D.D.S., 4S Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

Here are a few tips for enjoying the season and keeping your children’s oral health from falling by the wayside during this busy time of year. Eat Sweets Smartly It’s nearly impossible to keep kids (and adults!) away from sweet treats. However, you can minimize the effects of sugar on your children’s teeth. • Include treats as a part of the main meal. Doing this will keep the acids produced by mouth bacteria from lingering on your children’s teeth throughout the day. • If your kids can’t brush their teeth after eating sweets, have them rinse their mouth

out with water to wash away food particles and bacteria. • Cheese is a healthy after-meal snack that tastes great and helps neutralize acids that attack and soften tooth enamel. • Chewing sugar-free gum is another way to neutralize those pesky acids. Keep a Routine To make sure healthy habits are maintained even during the holiday season, follow these tips: • Brush and floss at least twice a day. Make sure your kids brush before they go to bed, and don’t let them sneak a cookie after brushing! • Make a kid-friendly dental travel kit that includes a toothbrush, mini-toothpaste, travel-size mouth wash, and floss.

Enjoying the holiday season doesn’t have to mean abandoning all the good oral health habits you’ve instilled in your children throughout the year. Following these simple tips will give your family more than one reason to smile. Happy Holidays! 

Settling Down in San Diego The Boeckman Family Finds the Ideal Community in 4S Ranch by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

hen Joe and Michelle Boeckman moved to 4S Ranch in 2003, the community looked a bit different. “We have fond memories of a time when this community was just beginning to grow,” they shared. “There was a dirt road going up and down Black Mountain, there was no 4S Commons, and there was no 4S Ranch Sports Park or Boys & Girls Club.” Today, Joe and Michelle and their three children, Owen, Lainey, and Brooke, enjoy the lifestyle and amenities of a 4S Ranch that is all grown up. Joe and Michelle value the masterplanned community of their neighborhood with its access to parks, trails, shopping, sports leagues, and great schools. “Andalusia is a great fit for us,” they shared. “It’s pretty quiet, and our neighbors are very friendly and tolerant of our busy and sometimes hectic and loud lifestyle,” they joked. And

while they have access to all the amenities of the community, they also appreciate the neighboring hills and nature. “We find it kind of fun to see coyotes, bunnies, and the occasional deer behind our house,” Michelle said. Joe is a native of San Diego; he grew up in Tierrasanta and attended San Diego State University (SDSU). Today, he is a health systems account manager for Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company. Michelle, an Orange County native, is also an SDSU alumna and works part time for 30 Clean and Monterey Ridge Elementary School.

“Like many families in the community, our family interests are pretty well-aligned with whatever our kids are involved with at the moment,” Michelle said. This includes plenty of sports, like baseball, basketball, flag football, softball, gymnastics, and soccer. For Joe, that means many hours of volunteering to coach and serving on the boards of Force FC and 4S Ranch Softball. Michelle volunteers at the schools and on the Foundation, as well as helping with Lainey and Brooke’s Girl Scout troops. Settling down in San Diego was not the original plan for the Boeckman family, but once they found 4S Ranch, they knew it was the ideal home to raise their family. In addition to the benefits and convenience of the activities, schools, and shopping, they shared, “We’ve made some lifelong friends that we can’t imagine moving away from.” 

cientific research connecting our diets and disease is rapidly growing, particularly regarding the effects of gluten. “As doctors start to understand that many diseases are associated with food allergies, the number of people that seek gluten-free food is increasing,” said Diana Benedek, Ph.D. She found inspiration in her own health struggles, and the discovery that eliminating gluten was not enough, and she needed to also cut corn and soy from her diet to improve her health. Committed to cutting these foods out of her life, she was now faced with different struggles – finding tasty gluten-free food without corn and soy, as well as avoiding cross-contamination and hidden allergens in restaurants. Her solution: the award-winning 2Good2B Bakery & Café in Encinitas, recently joined by a brand-new Rancho Bernardo location. Today, Diana is feeling great, and her customers love the outcome. All menu items at 2Good2B are of the highest quality and homemade, and everything is gluten, corn, and soy free, with many dairy-free and vegetarian options. 2Good2B is known for their pot pies, paninis, “AS MUCH AS chicken salad melt, flatbreads, pesto mac n’ cheese, as well as their 50 PERCENT OF delicious cakes, cupcakes, and pies. “Our cupcakes and paninis OUR CLIENTS remain our best sellers,” Diana added. To avoid hidden allergens, the culinary team grates the ARE NOT GLUTEN cheeses and makes their own spice mixes, sauces, rubs, and FREE. THEY JUST dressings to ensure no chemicals and preservatives typical of COME TO ENJOY shelf-ready, processed food are used. “Chefs John Toner, Amanda THE HEALTHY, Palomino, and Anthony Rodrigues share their passion for food with our customers,” said Diana, noting Amanda and Anthony are Hell’s PURE FOOD.” Kitchen chefs, and can be seen on seasons 11, 15, and 17. Diana’s also currently looking for franchisees to join the team and offer healthy and delicious gluten-corn-and soy-free food in California and Nevada. The passion and quality at 2Good2B have earned the team multiple awards for best gluten-free food in San Diego. Diana is most proud of being a Best Desserts and Best Bakery finalist for the San Diego Union Tribune – competing against non-gluten-free bakeries! And it’s not only the gluten-free customers who love the café. “As much as 50 percent of our clients are not gluten free,” Diana explained. “They just come to enjoy the healthy, pure food that they know contains no preservatives, MSG, corn syrup, or other chemicals that do not belong in food.” 

New PUSD Leadership The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) welcomed new principals at seven of its schools for the 2017-2018 school year, including 92127’s Del Sur Elementary School. Principal Eric Takeshita joins Del Sur with 24 years of experience in the San Diego Unified School District. He has served as an elementary teacher, vice principal, and principal, and was principal at Willard B. Hage Elementary School for the last eight years. His wife has been a PUSD teacher for many years, and both of his children attend school in the district. The other six new principals joining PUSD this year are Alain Henry (Abraxas High School), Jill Halsey (Canyon View Elementary School), Lisa Wilken (Sunset Hills Elementary School), Scott Corso (Black Mountain Middle School), Tina Ziegler (Westview High School), and Marie Galaz (Bernardo Heights Middle School).

Scripps Hospitals Ranked First in San Diego The Poway Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) is hosting its annual Holiday Home Tour in the Savenna and Santaluz communities this year, on Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour takes visitors on a holiday journey through beautifully decorated homes and culminates with decadent refreshments and musical performers. The event is the chapter’s major fundraiser of the year, and proceeds will benefit the Poway Senior Center, Valley Elementary School’s afterschool program, the Gayle Kennedy Memorial Scholarship, and chapter programming. “We are very excited about this year’s Holiday Home Tour as we are celebrating our 16th year!” said Chapter President Deb Devine. “Our continued tradition supports wonderful philanthropies in our local community and is an amazing way to kick-off the holiday season. NCL is a philanthropic organization for girls in grades 7 to 12 and their mothers, fostering a love of volunteering and community impact. Learn more at www.powayholidayhometour.wix.com/powayncl, or contact Annie Neale at nclholidayhometour@gmail.com.

The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla were recently ranked No. 1 in the San Diego region, No. 6 in California, and among the best in the nation in eight specialties on the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals list. The U.S. News rankings recognize the nation’s top 50 out of 4,658 hospitals that excel in treating patients with the most challenging healthcare needs. Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Green hospitals were also designated as high-performing in several other areas and achieved the highest possible score on performance treating nine relatively common adult procedures and conditions. “Ranking No. 1 in San Diego and among the best in the nation is the result of the hard work of our physicians, nurses, and staff who focus every day on always getting better,” said Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO of Scripps Health. “While we are deeply honored by this recognition, it’s really our patients who are the winners because they have access to outstanding healthcare right here at home.”

New High School Building at MCS

Guest Readers at Del Sur Elementary

92127’s Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) opened the doors to a brand new high school building this semester – just in time to accommodate an enrollment increase of over 10 percent this year. The 22,000-square-foot, two-story building includes dedicated learning spaces for science labs and STEAM classrooms. The goal is to train the next generation of leaders and prepare them for top colleges and universities, including schools and programs focused on the sciences. The new high school building is part of Phase 1 in MCS’s fourphase expansion plan. Later phases will include a performing arts building, expanded athletic fields, and other projects. “Continuing to expand our campus will allow students to increase their potential and fulfill their calling in Christ through academics, arts and athletics,” MCS Superintendent Jess Hetherington told the Maranatha community earlier this year. Learn more about MCS at www.maranathachristianschools.org.

This semester, a number of community members have dropped into local classrooms as guest readers. Sharelle Venable, a prekindergarten teacher at Del Sur Elementary School, shared that on the first day of school, Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Dr. Marian Phelps stopped by to read to the class. October saw two more guests – Kimberlie Rens, Executive Director II of Learning Support Services at PUSD, and Phil Blauer, evening news anchor at Fox 5 News.

Through its Bells of Freedom program, local nonprofit Dance Hearts kicked off the annual Adopt-a-Marine Family for the Holidays event in October, culminating in The Big Thank You event at Camp Pendleton on Dec. 3. The event serves local military families during the holiday season by connecting them with community sponsors that provide emotional, spiritual, and financial help. The sponsors travel to Camp Pendleton to meet their “adopted” military families, deliver gifts, enjoy a catered lunch, visit from Santa, and a door prize drawing. Founded in 2001, Dance Hearts is dedicated to connecting inservice military men and women to the community they serve through holiday family “adoptions,” emergency support, and transitional housing for displaced women and children. The Bells of Freedom program originated at Camp Pendleton, but is quickly growing chapters in other areas throughout the country. Learn more at www.bellsoffreedom.org.

Rather than focus on profits I want to focus on student success with community development.”

“I OFFER A FRESH TAKE ON THE INDUSTRY. RATHER THAN FOCUS ON PROFITS I WANT TO FOCUS ON STUDENT SUCCESS WITH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.” The tutors at Avanza are college graduates and have experience in teaching. “Many have a credential or are working on a credential,” added Richard. The tutors are also trained in Avanza’s 5 STAR Method, which Richard created to help both the tutor and the student create a pathway for success. “This method is organized and researched and allows our teachers the freedom to teach to their skills and provides a learning path for success for the student,” stated Richard. Avanza Education offers small group test preparation courses at five different locations throughout San Diego County: Del Mar Heights, Rancho Bernardo, La Jolla, Scripps Ranch, and San Marcos. “One-toone tutoring can take place anywhere the tutor and student find as the most convenient location,” noted Richard. “This can be at home, library, a coffee shop, or even online.” As for his future business goals, Richard hopes to expand Avanza Education throughout the county and to Orange County and Los Angeles in the next couple of years. “Within that time have a sustainable cash flow to provide many free programs for those students who cannot afford test prep, college prep, and tutoring,” he added. “I would like to create a service that provides high quality education accessible to all and creates lifelong learners.” 

very weekday in 92127, students are developing talent and finding their voices at Oak Valley Middle School (OVMS). Over 650 students participate in the school’s band, choir, and orchestra classes. There are opportunities for sixth, seventh, and

eighth graders of all experience levels to explore the world of music, both in the classroom and onstage. It’s a chance to build both skill and confidence, as well as learning to work together to create magic with their classmates. 92127 Magazine spoke with music directors Liliana Lazzari, Mark Nowak, and Rebecca Fallentine to learn more.

Q&A with Liliana Lazzari,

ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR

WHAT MUSIC CLASSES AND PROGRAMS DO YOU TEACH?

Currently I teach sixth grade orchestra, seventh and eighth grade advanced orchestra, and the seventh grade sinfonia. WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND, AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN WORKING WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS?

I started teaching band and orchestra 18 years ago when I was finishing my master’s degree in Fresno. I had already been teaching music for seven years before that as a private flute teacher and sectional coach in Poway. I taught all levels of music from general music with kindergarten students to college freshman. It was a great learning experience. I knew I enjoyed teaching middle school and high school the best, and when I moved back up to the San Diego area in 2005 I started teaching at Westview and Black Mountain Middle. When the opportunity came in 2006 to teach full-time band and orchestra at OVMS, I was elated. I love the middle school age group and really enjoy my interactions with them.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING?

I love seeing the improvement and maturing that happens during middle school. The kids come in mostly as beginners or with just one year of experience and they grow so much so fast. It’s just incredible to watch. That process is both the most rewarding and challenging part of my job. HOW HAS THE PROGRAM GROWN OR EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

I started teaching at OVMS the second year that the school was open. I had three bands and two orchestras when I started. By the next year, we added a jazz band and a symphony orchestra class. By the third year, the program grew to about 400 kids and the school hired a second band and orchestra teacher. It was great growth for the program. We fluctuated in size since that time, but our program has grown to over 450 in band and orchestra and 200 in choir this year. We’ve added a second jazz band and a second symphony orchestra class and now have three choir classes.

ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES THE COMMUNITY SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO?

On Nov. 1, the seventh/eighth grade advanced orchestra will be doing a joint concert with Del Norte High School (DNHS) at 7 p.m. And on Dec. 20 we will be having our winter concert at DNHS, also at 7 p.m. We will be performing in the DNHS theater. HOW MANY PERFORMANCES DO YOU PUT ON A YEAR?

I look to have at least three formal evening performances for all the students to participate in during the school year. I try for one in

December, one in March, and one in May, with the May performance being our Gala Concert at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. The seventh and eighth grade orchestra students also have a joint concert with DNHS close to Halloween every year where they dress in costume. In January or February, we do a joint rehearsal with San Diego State University. Additionally, we have informal concerts that occur during the school day where we invite parents and students to watch. In April, we go to the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Festival

Q&A with Mark Nowak,

BAND AND ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR WHAT MUSIC CLASSES AND PROGRAMS DO YOU TEACH?

I teach four periods of band, one of string orchestra, one full orchestra, and one jazz band. WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND, AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN WORKING WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS?

I began teaching jazz improvisation and directing jazz ensembles as a graduate assistant at the University of Georgia. As music assistant at Twin Peaks Middle School, I realized that teaching middle school is where I want to be. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING?

Working with students for all three years of middle school is most

rewarding – helping them to grow as human beings and musicians. The most frustrating part of my job is not being able to give each student the individual attention that they deserve. HOW HAS THE PROGRAM GROWN OR EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

This is my fifth year at OVMS. During that time, band participation has increased from a little over 200 students to almost 300 this year. I’ve incorporated many new educational opportunities such as side-by-side clinics with Dr. Kitelinger and his students at San Diego State, performances in the 4S community like Little League opening day and both Stone Ranch Elementary and OVMS Foundation fundraisers, and performances outside the

Our biggest and best concert of the year is at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. This year’s concert is Saturday, May 12 at 3 p.m. We play challenging music in a performing arts hall to give our students the opportunity to play at the most professional level possible. HOW MANY PERFORMANCES DO YOU PUT ON A YEAR?

Between my seven ensembles, it’s somewhere around 20 to 30 concerts a year. IS THERE ANY WAY THE COMMUNITY CAN HELP SUPPORT MUSIC AT OVMS?

I am humbled and honored by the support I get from parents, students, and the community. As parents, continue to advocate for the importance of music education in our district! DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES OR EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR TIME AT OVMS?

Q&A with Rebecca Fallentine, CHOIR DIRECTOR

WHAT MUSIC CLASSES AND PROGRAMS DO YOU TEACH?

I am the choir director; I teach two sixth grade choir classes and one seventh and eighth choir. I also teach sixth grade science. WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN WORKING WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS?

I am not your typical music teacher: my major in college was history; my master’s degree was in Middle School Science Education (National Board Certification); and I have taught math, science, social studies, and language arts to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. I minored in music, and this is my 12th year at OVMS! Even though my first teaching assignment was in high school history, I have always loved music. I was involved in every music ensemble possible in high school. Now, I sing in a professional choir, Millennial Choirs and Orchestra, which has recorded many albums and toured all over the United States. I have always wanted to be a teacher! When I was young, I saved all of my school assignments, notes, and projects with the hope of using them as a resource as a teacher. After teaching all ages from toddlers to adolescents, it was obvious to me that middle school was my niche. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE? THE MOST CHALLENGING?

Concerts are always a payday for me. I take a lot of pride in the quality of music my students produce and the joy in their faces as they show the audience that they are proud of their work, too. Hearing them sing with confidence and sweetness

is a little slice of heaven! Perhaps the most challenging part of my role is the nitty-gritty rehearsals when I demand students get a specific timbre or type of articulation, the correct shape of a vowel, accurate rhythm, etc. I’m picky and the kids know it! They like the results, but the process is met with some resistance. These challenges become easier with a very patient and talented accompanist, Ms. YunJin Kim. HOW HAS THE PROGRAM GROWN OR EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

When I was hired at OVMS, there was no choir program, and I thought it was a shame! I volunteered to teach one class of choir, but the elective was only available to a small group of students. As the interest increased, I was lucky enough to have administrators that supported the program. Mr. Currigan and all of our administration supports the music program, and that is a huge part of its success. What was once a choir of 20 has grown into three full sections of choir students. We are very lucky – not all middle schools have a choir program. ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES THE COMMUNITY SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO?

Our holiday concert is Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the OVMS MPR. We also will have our big Spring Gala

at the Escondido Performing Arts center on May 12, 2018. HOW MANY PERFORMANCES DO YOU PUT ON A YEAR? WHAT TYPE OF PRODUCTIONS DO YOU GENERALLY PUT ON?

It is usually between 6 and 10 concerts a year. Each concert has a different focus, and some recent themes have been: A Disney-ish Halloween, A Tribute to Jazz, and Regards to Broadway. We have also performed many classical pieces, many of which have been in foreign languages from German and Swahili to Latin and Italian and more. I believe middle school kids can sing the classics, and well! I frequently try to hire instrumentalists to accompany the choir for variety and the enriching experience of collaborating with other musicians.

lucky to have a very active Music Boosters who have been very supportive of our needs. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES OR EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR TIME AT OVMS?

I love running into students from previous years and hearing about their lives and successes. I have watched hundreds of my students grow from awkward middle school children into mature and contributing adults – seeing them progress is the best part of my job! RECOVERY ORGANIZATION REMEMBERS FIRES 10 YEARS LATER

O

ct. 22 marked the 10th anniversary of the Witch Creek and Guejito Fires, which destroyed 365 homes in Rancho Bernardo – countywide, 1,141 homes total were destroyed. While thousands were devastated, the community also proved its strength as neighbors banded together to support each other. This year, the Fired Up Sisters (FUS) hosted a dinner event in commemoration. FUS was formed by local women as an emotional support group, and quickly began to coordinate recovery efforts and help fill the gaps left by national programs. “The Red Cross had collected over 30 million dollars in a few weeks designated for the Witch Creek fire,” said Janice Strizver. “Our family of four adults received $1,200. I quickly realized we needed to make things happen.” She first became involved with the disaster center in Ramona, then joined FUS. “My sister and I joined Fired Up Sisters because we needed help to deal with the devastation and incredible trauma of losing a home,” shared Joann Kling, whose home burned down while she was on assignment in Hong Kong. “With FUS, we found a group of very disparate women – women who we would have never met otherwise – yet who all shared the same experience.” Local resident Robin Kaufman experienced the fires as a Rancho Bernardo CERT volunteer, RB Community Council president, and a victim. “I wasn’t expecting my house to burn down as I am located in the middle of Westwood,” she explained, and added that her preparedness training helped her deal with insurance afterwards. “I was more prepared than many others not only with what to take when evacuating, but I also had a video of my entire home, inside and out, that was sent to a friend out of state.” Now, FUS is dedicated to helping other communities affected by disaster. “The importance of preparedness cannot be minimized,” Joann said. “Our current mission is to pay forward the community assistance we received to other natural disaster survivors.” Learn more at www.firedupsisters.com. 

Giving Thanks

4S RANCH RESIDENT SHARES OPEN LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY LAST YEAR, DEL NORTE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT GARRETT LAVIN WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER. HIS AND HIS FAMILY’S JOURNEY SINCE THEN HAS BEEN DIFFICULT, BUT MADE LESS SO BY THE SUPPORT OF FRIENDS, TEAMMATES, NEIGHBORS, AND THE WHOLE COMMUNITY. AS THANKSGIVING APPROACHES, GARRETT’S PARENTS, BARB AND TED LAVIN, SHARE AN OPEN LETTER WITH 92127 MAGAZINE.

A

s Garrett approaches his 30th week of chemo, our family has looked back on the long road and reflected on how this journey has changed his life, and ours, forever. Never in a million years did we expect Garrett would be diagnosed with the monster that is cancer. Garrett has remained tough through a long 10-hour surgery, endless hours at the hospital receiving chemotherapy, and six weeks of torturous radiation. It has been a very hard year, to say the least, but with all the support of our awesome community, we have been able to get through it. We want to say thank you for the endless love and gratitude that you have all shown us. When we moved to the 4S area in 1999, Garrett was just six months old. We were looking for a familyfriendly community where the kids could play outside, make new friends, and have fun, but our expectations were surpassed. We have made friendships through sports, school, and church that will last a lifetime. So, thank you, thank you, thank you for wiping our tears and filling our bellies. Our overwhelming emotions and fears were lessened by prayers and masses that were said in Garrett’s honor. The community of high schools has brightened many of Garrett’s days by sending cards, signs, and blankets. The Del Norte baseball team was one of Garrett’s favorite things about high school. He was looking forward to playing his senior year (2017) and ending his baseball career with a bang. Of course, things changed, but that didn’t stop his team from making him feel included. They shaved their heads, made a banner with Garrett’s jersey number, and made him feel a part of the team when he sat in the dugout during the games. They truly got him through the shock of finding out and living with the life-changing news. We also would like to thank the many people that made a contribution to the GoFundMe page. From our closest friends to kind strangers, we are forever grateful to you. Garrett will finish chemo on December 18th, a perfect Christmas present if you ask him. He will be able to go back to his active, “normal” self again, getting stronger every day and living out the rest of his life having beat cancer. Thank you so much, The Lavin Family

ongtime local volunteer Larry McIntyre was recently honored for 40 years of community volunteer work with a comedy roast. Over 100 community members joined for a night of hilarious roasting by Mike Stelman, Craig Brown, former councilwoman Barbara Warden, and Larry’s brother, Rich McIntyre. Then Larry got to take the stage and gave as good as he got. He and his wife, Joyce, were given a two-night stay in a villa at South Coast Winery. Among his many community contributions, Larry helped found the RB Chamber of Commerce (now the North San Diego Business Chamber), founded the RB Historical Society, and co-founded the Rancho Bernardo Business Association. 

DENTISTRY PROFILE

RESTORING BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY SMILES Dr. Susan Hong Offers Patients the Latest Dental Technology in a Warm and Friendly Environment photos courtesy of Dr. Susan Hong

hen Dr. Hong opened her family and cosmetic dentistry practice in Rancho Bernardo, she focused on providing the highest quality dental care in a comfortable and welcoming environment. “I didn’t want it to feel clinical and cold,” explained Dr. Hong. For patients’ comfort, the dental chairs have heat and massage features, and televisions on the ceilings so patients can be distracted during procedures. The practice also offers the option of Sedation or Sleep Dentistry for patients who are especially anxious about visiting the dentist. Dr. Hong places great value on building lifelong relationships with her patients and providing the best possible clinical care based on trust, compassion, and empathy. “I like to focus on the patient as a whole, not just his or her mouth. I want to get to know the person and their story. That’s what I enjoy the most,” she said. “I am also very aware that I need to earn a patient’s trust and I work very hard at respecting their expectations and letting them know that I will do my best to meet their needs.” The practice is dedicated to using the latest in digital technology to diagnose and assess the needs of their patients. This includes: Digital Sensors and Intraoral Cameras that give patients a birds-eye view of their mouths as well as helping detect decay with fluorescent imaging technology; hand-held x-ray (NOMAD) machines that emit significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays; and Laser Technology to help reduce bacteria in the mouths of patients with gum disease.

W

Dr. Hong also emphasizes the importance of understanding medical-dental relationships. “For example, when I see worn teeth and an enlarged tongue,” she explained, “I may recommend a sleep study to screen for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).” Dr. Hong offers more easily adaptable and adjustable oral appliances to treat OSA, as opposed to the traditional Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, which can be uncomfortable and inconvenient for most apnea patients. The practice also provides Invisalign Treatment, Smile Makeovers, TMJ therapy, Laser Teeth Whitening, and Oral Cancer Screening using ViziLite Technology. Ultimately, Dr. Hong and her team aim to create the most effective and comfortable experience possible for each and every one of their patients. “I live in the community so it’s important to me that our team treats all our patients like friends and family.” AT-A-GLANCE Dr. Hong is a native New Yorker and graduate of Name of Business: Dr. Susan Hong the University Family and Cosmetic Dentistry of Pennsylvania Owner: Dr. Susan Hong School of Dental Established: 2015 Medicine. WINTER

LIGHTS Enjoy the Sights and Lights this Season in the Best-Decorated Local Neighborhoods by LAINEY KRAL

A

s the weather turns colder, San Diegans pull boxes out of storage and get ready to brighten up the winter season. The tradition of decorating homes with electric lights began taking off in the 1960s as a next step from decorated Christmas trees, and has since spread around the world. Colorful holiday and seasonal decorations can be found in most San Diegan neighborhoods, but some streets stand out for their over-the-top festive displays. Wait until the sun goes down and bring the whole family for a tour of one – or more – of these twinkling destinations.

Coming Soon – The Ethical Quandary

O

ver the last few years, there has been a surge in the use of “Coming Soon” advertising for homes. The increase can be traced to Zillow’s introduction of a feature by the same name, but has expanded to the common use by real estate agents of sign riders promoting homes “Coming Soon” to the market. It seems like a straightforward idea, but recently, the National Association of Realtors came out with a strong warning about the practice: “A broker’s decision to market a seller’s property as ‘coming soon’ must always be made based on the client’s informed determination of what best serves the client’s interests… failing to disclose the pros and cons of a limited marketing plan such as ‘coming soon’ advertising, can violate state real estate license laws and regulations…” I like the “Coming Soon“ advertising because if people are driving around looking at houses, I want them to know we have one coming on the market and they might want to wait a few days before making an offer on another property. So why is there opposition to a seemingly simple strategy? Well, everything a broker does has to be for the benefit of the seller, not the broker. Here are a couple of the concerns: • It can be seen as restrictive in terms of Fair Housing Laws. • If the home is sold before being exposed to the entire market, the seller is missing the chance for a competitive situation and therefore cannot be confident of getting the highest price.

• The broker or agent can be seen as trying to represent both sides of the transaction – increasing his or her income at the expense of the seller receiving offers from the open marketplace. I believe that the “Coming Soon“ strategy can be beneficial, but needs to be used carefully. While there are definitely stories of abuse, brokerages watch this closely. If an agent has a pattern of representing both sides on homes that never hit the market, the agent and brokerage are at risk of being sued and losing their license. With this in mind, it has always been and will continue to be our policy that if a home is marketed as “Coming Soon,” offers are not considered until the home is on the MLS. It’s the only way to put the sellers’ best interests first. 
