Introducing Everything Homez Magazine

I

ZCOD E MAGA ZINE’ S

t would be nearly impossible for me to say how many times people ask me if I know of a good contractor. A good painter. A solar company to call for an estimate. A handyman. A flooring company. A plumber. The list goes on and on. Everyone that knows me understands that I like to build stuff – or have stuff built for me when possible. As a kid growing up in EVERYTHING Texas, that’s just what people did. If a family HOMEZ MAGAZINE member needed to add a room onto their house, the entire family got together for a couple of months in the afternoons after their day jobs and built the room addition. I grew up thinking that everyone knew how to build stuff. It wasn’t until I moved out to Southern California as a teenager that I realized that this wasn’t the “norm” everywhere. When I talked to people about my experience helping to install a roof on my uncle’s house as a young teenager, I think most people thought I was making it up. For the past couple of years, I have been talking to 92128 Magazine readers about this issue. Everyone seemed to agree that it is often difficult to find reliable contractors, home-related products, and Derrick Breaux similar services. The general consensus was that it would be extremely Publisher convenient to have a section within the pages of this magazine that focused specifically on the home. So, today I am proud to officially introduce to you Everything Homez Magazine – a magazine within the pages of 92128 Magazine (see page 65). The goal of Everything Homez is to provide you with information on all types of products and services related to the home improvement industry. The Everything Homez section will be in every issue moving forward. You can expect to see the number of pages grow as businesses that fall within the “homez” category commit to participating – it is destined to become the ultimate ‘go-to’ resource for home improvement. Our ZCode Media team will be working diligently to seek out additional businesses in all subcategories of Everything Homez. However, if you know of a great company that fits in this category that you would like to refer, please send them our way. It’s always good to work with companies that come highly recommended by you! If you have a home improvement project in the works, please check out Everything Homez to see if there is a local company that can assist. GUID E TO EVER YTHIN G

J

ulia Haynes is a freshman at Rancho Bernardo High. Her family moved to 92128 nearly two years ago. “I love how great the teachers are,” shared Julia. “I feel like I am learning a lot, but overall it’s the environment of a group of great people I get to see every day helping me and supporting me throughout.” Her favorite subject is science because she’s drawn to conducting experiments.

Julia Haynes (14) 9 Rancho Bernardo High School Bill and Hiroko Haynes Chris (23) Starbucks! My favorite place in San Diego is Potato Chip Rock.

She’s on the high school tennis team and received the MVP award – no surprise for a top-ranking high school tennis player in Southern California. Her biggest tournament this year was at the U.S. Tennis Association Girls’ Nationals. Julia explained, “It was a unity of many girls all around the country coming to San Diego for the sole purpose of tennis.” She held on to win her first round, but lost her second. “Overall it was a great experience and I look forward to next year,” she added. Her parents also played tennis, which explains why Julia picked up a racket at two years old. Swiss pro tennis player Roger Federer is her inspiration. “He has been great for many, many years, not just for a short amount of time, which is what you want to be when you grow up,” she added. As she grows in her sport, Julia finds it’s most rewarding to see herself improve and win tournaments. “But it’s very challenging when those goals cannot be met, or I do poorly when I think I should’ve done better,” mentioned Julia. “It’s also very rewarding to receive trophies and praise from my family and friends.” When her racket rests, Julia laces up hiking boots and heads to Potato Chip Rock, or out for a long walk. She also bikes and swims. With her mom, Julia checks out regional festivals, and added, “It’s really fun trying new foods and seeing new things.” Julia aspires to play college tennis for Stanford, ultimately becoming a pro player. “But at the moment, I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up,” admitted Julia. “Science really interests me, so I think I want to have a job that’s science-related, but I’m bound to change my mind!” She can volley these future aspirations around for a while. Time is part of her home court advantage. 

About the Chef Submit a rec www.9 2128ma ipe at gazine.c om

Name of Chef: Jennifer Carvajal Family: Husband – Sanford Carvajal, son – Connor Carvajal Community: Carmel Mountain Ranch Hobbies: Cooking and baking, paper crafts, reading, decorating Favorite Local Activity: Going to Mt. Carmel High School football games when my son plays and my husband coaches About the Recipe: This soup is a family favorite during cold winter weather. It’s easy and most of the ingredients are probably already in your pantry. The recipe is also very flexible – you can add more vegetables, throw in some zucchini, or even add some chopped fresh spinach. If you don’t have crushed tomatoes, then diced tomatoes or even a jar of spaghetti sauce are great substitutes. It’s also very low-fat if you use lean meat, which is great for everyone who made a New Year’s resolution to drop a few pounds. About the Chef: Growing up, my family had dinner together at the table nearly every night. It’s hard to do while juggling everyone’s activities but I really feel like it’s an important part of every day. Sometimes dinner is a favorite that I’ve made over and over and sometimes it’s an experiment that flops horribly, but no matter what we are eating, it’s nice to all sit down together and talk about how everyone is doing. ¢

heir wedding was broadcast on a reality TV show. It’s not unusual for Steve and Kristine DeMatteo to shake things up. They met through friends at Mission Beach when Kristine was completing her Master’s degree in Education at SDSU, and Steve was a Marine helicopter pilot at MCAS Miramar, serving two combat tours in his career. Now with two boys, the fun continues. “One time, we surprised Nicholas and Dylan on Christmas Day by telling them they were going to their grandparents’ house, but we actually took them to the airport for a flight to San Francisco,” shared Kristine DeMatteo. Home is in The Trails, where Kristine revealed, “We’re also grateful for the wildlife that lives in the neighborhood – owls, hawks, coyotes, even wild turkeys.” Steve has an MBA in Finance from University of South Florida and a BA in International Relations from Tulane University. When he separated from the Marine Corps they moved back to San Diego, where he’s now a partner with Pacific Point Group at UBS Wealth Management and continues his military service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. Kristine is an elementary school teacher, now

full-time mom and private tutor. She taught English in Korea for an exchange program and currently volunteers at Dylan’s school. Both kids were born in Tampa. Nicholas is in sixth grade at Bernardo Heights Middle School and Dylan is in fourth grade at Chaparral Elementary School. After playing little league for several years, the brothers are involved with Poway Valley Water Polo. They’re musically inclined and collectively play guitar, drums, trumpet, piano, and baritone. Beach time means surfing or boogie boarding. Their dogs and cat are shelter rescues. Kristine added, “We have three chickens that hatched in Dylan’s classroom that we consider part of the family.” Community is important to them. Kristine served as president of the Friends of the Library at RB High School and was on the board of the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society. In 2012 Steve was inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame for his community service to this area. He’s now on the boards for Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation and Casa de las Campanas. “We enjoy playing tennis, dining out, going to the beach, listening to live music, and traveling,” revealed Kristine. The DeMatteos have it dialed in, and it’s not reality TV but a fulfilling life together. 

ver since Jeffrey Ward was a boy, he has felt the pull of exploring new places and experiencing adventures all across the globe. “I’ve always loved maps and could draw a map of the world by age seven. I also collected stamps as a child and was fascinated by the names and designs on the stamps of places like Mozambique, French Guiana, and Nicaragua. I just wanted to see them all,” revealed Jeffrey. Todate he has visited all seven continents and 210 countries, including every country in the western hemisphere except Cuba, most of Europe, 25 African countries, 30 Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and more than 15 Pacific Ocean countries. His most recent trip was to Madagascar, Reunion, and the Comoros in the Indian Ocean. When asked to pinpoint his most memorable

travel experiences, Jeffrey is quick to state that there are too many to list. “However, watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu in Peru, snorkeling with penguins and seals in the Galapagos Islands, visiting the Great Wall, seeing the Egyptian pyramids, and seeing the icebergs and wildlife in Antarctica stand out in my mind,” related Jeffrey, who also cites Madagascar as a truly memorable destination. “Madagascar has unique animals – lemurs, chameleons, geckos – and a variety of terrain from rainforest to desert. The culture is also unique as it is a blend of Indonesian, African, and Arabic influences,” said Jeffrey. As a seasoned world traveler Jeffrey is the coordinator of the San Diego chapter of the Travelers Century Club, a social organization of people who have traveled to 100 or more

The club was formed in 1953 in Los Angeles and today consists of 20 chapters in the United States and four other countries. “We have an official list which divides the world into 324 countries. Over the years about two dozen people have completed the list,” stated Jeffrey, who would like to visit all 193 members of the United Nations. He is currently at 124 and looks forward to the journey of visiting the remaining 69 countries. When Jeffrey is not traveling the world, he is busy with his income tax practice located in Old Town. He can also be found enjoying local shops and parks in 92128, as well as watching football, reading, stamp collecting, and spending time with Sandra, his wife of five years. or Melissa Foster, there is no better feeling than serving others. She is an active volunteer for Children of the Nations (COTN), a nonprofit organization that operates homes, schools, farms, skill centers, clinics, and village feeding centers for orphaned and destitute children across the globe. The organization is funded primarily through child sponsorships and individual donations. “My heart and the bulk of my energy belong to Children of the Nations. I learned of COTN while attending a church that presented the sponsorship opportunity during a service event. As I learned more about the mission of COTN, I was immediately drawn to the organization. I have always worked with children, so I could easily see myself sponsoring a child,” revealed Melissa. She has since sponsored two children and has traveled to Uganda twice. The first time was to run a sports and fitness camp for the kids at the school and children’s home there, and the second was to conduct leadership workshops to equip and empower the staff at the school. “While in Uganda the second time, I met a teenage girl named Mercy, one of the children I sponsor. I was able to spend a week getting to know her better, and it was an amazing experience to see her grow and how she cares for and gives to those in her community. She was such an example to me – it is a special cycle to be a part of,” related Melissa. According to Melissa, sponsorship funds give children the opportunity to attend school, receive two meals a day, and have medical care. The correspondence between a sponsor and a child also helps the child to grow into a strong and confident leader that can make a difference in his or her own community. Here at home, Melissa is involved with the local COTN organization in San Diego, as well as Feeding America. She is very close with her family, and credits her parents with inspiring her to give back and make a difference in the world. Melissa is a second degree black belt in tae kwan do, and she loves to run, craft, hike, and spend time with friends and her boyfriend Michael. “Michael is in the Navy and is currently on deployment. I am very proud of him and his servant heart. I can’t wait for him to come home so we can have many more adventures together,” stated Melissa.  Group: Purpose: Website:

Resolutions for a Healthier You at Any Age by YENNY LIM, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

Check out these effective strategies for boosting your brain and body so you stay stronger and smarter longer. While growing older affects nearly every part of you, aging well doesn’t have to be an oxymoron. Eat a balanced diet that emphasizes whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables and limits sugar, saturated fat, and alcohol. The National Institutes on Aging recommends 1.5 to 2.5 cups of fruit, two to 3.5 cups of vegetables, five to six ounces of grains, five to seven ounces of protein, three cups of fat-free or low-fat milk or the equivalent, and five to eight teaspoons of oil daily for individuals over 50. Keep moving. Regular aerobic exercise, the kind that gets your heart pumping, strengthens both your body and your brain. As we age, the hippocampus – the brain region that plays a vital role in verbal memory and learning – shrinks, leading to memory impairment. The good news is that cardio exercise appears to boost the size of the

hippocampus. Standard recommendations advise 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week, which could be walking, swimming, or tennis. If raking leaves or cleaning house makes you break out in a light sweat, that counts as moderate activity. However, be careful not to overstress your body and joints and consult your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

beyond what is easy. Try learning a new language, studying a new area of interest such as art history or botany, or taking up a hobby such as knitting or chess.

Take dance lessons. A 21-year study of individuals 75 and older found that frequent dancing was one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy and help prevent Alzheimer’s, dementia, and memory loss. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the 2003 study was funded by the National Institute on Aging.

Get enough sleep. Not sleeping enough may lead to a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes as well as impaired memory. The ideal amount varies per person, but make sure you feel well-rested in the morning.

Have music in your life. Playing an instrument can help strengthen memory, verbal fluency, problem-solving abilities, and how you process information, while listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory, according to researchers at John Hopkins. Learn new skills. The activities that have the most impact on your brain health are those that stretch you, requiring you to work

Forget multitasking. Doing one thing at a time, not everything at once, strengthens higher-order reasoning and the ability to understand and apply new information.

Establish a relationship with your primary care provider. Whether you see an internal medicine or family medicine doctor, it’s important to have a primary care physician who can help you stay healthy with preventive measures and regain health during an illness. ¢

Dr. Marisa Joins CMDC

Carmel Mountain Dental Care (CMDC) recently welcomed Dr. Marisa Lee, D.M.D., to their growing team. To avoid confusion between herself and fellow CMDC dentist Dr. H. Jonathan Lee, D.M.D. – no relation – she goes by Dr. Marisa. Born in Hawaii, Dr. Marisa was drawn towards dentistry from an early age. Sportsrelated injuries and poor eating habits resulted in a significant amount of dental care as a teenager, and she was inspired by her dentists’ patient, nonjudgmental care. “I personally understand the anxiety, discomfort, and pain patients experience with dentistry because I too was once a patient terrified of going to the dentist,” shared Dr. Marisa. “It is a blessing and a privilege to help each patient obtain a healthy, beautiful smile they love through empathetic and genuine dental care.” Dr. Marisa is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Society, Christian Medical and Dental Association, and San Diego County Dental Society.

The Last 5 Years

PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre is proud to present Jason Robert Brown’s The Last 5 Years, a powerful play with an unconventional structure. It’s the story of two young New Yorkers and their journey in and out of love with each other, told through intercutting scenes. Aspiring actress Cathy – played by Sarah LeClair – tells her story backwards while emerging author Jamie – played by Cory Hibbs – tells his story chronologically. The two stories meet only once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. The singers will play their own music and accompany each other’s songs, letting the piano become an extension of the characters. Cory Hibbs is also the play’s director, and Sarah LeClair is the music director. Lynn Wolsey is the show’s producer. The show opens Friday, Jan. 22 and runs on weekends through Sunday, Feb. 21. Donations benefited the San Diego Humane Society and PAWS San Diego. “The ASPCA is thrilled to once again work on this important event with Assemblymember Maienschein and we are grateful for Petco’s active participation,” said ASPCA Vice President of State Affairs Kevin O’Neill. “Donations from this event will greatly assist San Diego Humane Society and PAWS San Diego in their mission to provide support for companion animals throughout the region.” Maienschein has authored two recent bills to help animals and their owners – Assembly Bills 316 and 494 were both introduced this year to help animals facing danger, whether from natural disaster or domestic abuse. Both were signed by Governor Brown. Learn how you can help local animals year-round at www.sdhumane.org and www.pawssandiego.org.

Museums throughout San Diego are gearing up for another great February with the return of Macy’s Museum Month. It’s a leap year, so San Diegans will have 29 days to delve into over 40 arts, culture, and science destinations at half-off the regular admission price. Last year almost 30,000 people participated in the event, which was founded in 1989 to foster awareness of San Diego’s incredibly varied cultural institutions. From the San Diego Museum of Art to the California Surf Museum to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, there’s something for everyone to explore. “Many of our member museums make February the hallmark for new exhibition launches,” said Theresa Kosen, San Diego Museum Council Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to see such a phenomenal landscape of cultural opportunities for locals and visitors to enjoy.” Participants can find Museum Month Passes at any local Macy’s store – each pass is valid for up to four guests. Learn more and find the full directory of participating museums at www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org.

Q&A with Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo President Arilla St. Laurent What is a Rotary Club? We are neighbors, community leaders, and global citizens uniting for the common good. Our motto is “Service Above Self.” Can you tell us about the history behind the Rotary Club of RB? Our club was established in 1964. There were 27 members lead by President John Gray. How did you personally become involved with Rotary Club of RB? A friend, Mike Stelman, who was President of the RB Rotary Club invited me to a meeting. What is your role within the club? I’m currently president of the club. My duties include leading weekly meetings and keeping the club involved with community needs. What types of activities is the Rotary Club involved with? No project is too large or too small to be considered.

Can you elaborate on some of the projects you have worked on in the past? Through our Dictionary/Thesaurus Project, we give dictionaries to local third graders and thesauruses to local fourth graders. We’ve given $25,000 to the RB Public Library and $25,000 to the remodel of Fire Station 33, plus the station’s state-of-the-art early warning system. In 1993 we purchased the first car for the Reserve Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP). With that first purchase began the RSVP Program

We offer many Rotary Youth programs, including scholarships for high school seniors in the Music Camp International Program, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), the 4-Way Test Speech Contest, and several more. We support many youth organizations from Boy Scouts to Girl Scouts to Boys & Girls Clubs and more. The RB Rotary Club founded five additional Rotary Clubs, including RB Sunrise, San Diego North, and three clubs on our military bases. These are the only Rotary Clubs located on any military bases throughout the world. Global projects include a clean water project in Ecuador, Polio Plus – the project to eliminate

that has now gone nationwide. In 1979 we purchased a van for the American Red Cross. We’ve made contributions to the police storefront, the Interfaith Council, the Spirit of the Fourth Parade, and Clean Foundation, Inc., which was started by Frank Goldsmith, DVM. In 1994 he was named a National Leadership Fellow. We have supported many of the Senior Service Programs, including the Flu Shot Program, which we started in 1989 and is now funded by Medicare.

Vocabulary Virtuoso LOCAL TUTOR AND STUDENT COLLABORATE ON ENTERTAINING VOCABULARY WORKBOOK

T

wo local residents recently collaborated to create Vocabulary Virtuoso: Mastering Middle School Vocabulary, which is now available as a paperback workbook or as an eBook from The Critical Thinking Company. The book includes 15 lessons, each with a list of 12 words from PSAT vocabulary lists. Retired teacher, tutor, and 92128 resident Nancy Forderer wrote the book, which takes an entertaining approach to teaching vocabulary. The stories and sample sentences follow a fictional group of students through their daily academic routines. “As a tutor, I continually searched for a vocabulary book that would engage my students with a sense of fun as well as being a learning tool,” said Nancy. “Because I could never find the perfect book, I decided to create my own book. I did and used it with the students I tutored, and they approved wholeheartedly.” Kseniya Belysheva was one of Nancy’s students who loved the book. She agreed to illustrate the book after completing many of the lessons. “I was so impressed with her charming drawings that I contacted The Critical Thinking Company to inquire about the possibility of using Kseniya’s illustrations,” said Nancy. “When they saw them, they agreed.” Kseniya is a 92127 resident and a student at Del Norte High School who loves art, reading, and writing. She aims to become a lawyer. Nancy taught high school and middle school for 25 years in Ohio and Michigan, and began tutoring when she retired to San Diego. She enjoys writing, reading, tutoring, and being close to her children and grandchildren. Find Vocabulary Virtuoso at www.criticalthinking.com. ¢

:::: HEALTHY SMILES

Are Same-Day Crowns as Good as Lab-Made Crowns? The answer is yes. How do same-day crowns work? Let’s face it, very few of us have perfect teeth that are free of decay and fillings. You can probably see a filling or two in your own mouth. In many cases, those fillings are made of metal material that can go bad, weaken the tooth, or experience additional decay under or around it. In fact, 1.2 billion of these metal fillings will need to be replaced in the next 10 years. CEREC® is a method used by thousands of dentists worldwide since 1987 not only to replace these fillings but also to restore any tooth that is decayed, weakened, broken, etc. to its natural strength and beauty. Better yet, it’s done in a single appointment, with all-ceramic materials that are the same color as your teeth!

Once it is determined that your tooth needs to be fixed, the dentist numbs the tooth and prepares the tooth to receive a crown. A digital imprint is taken of the prepared tooth, instead of the the traditional goop impression material. The CEREC® machine helps the dentist create the restoration for your tooth. The CEREC® 3D software takes the digital picture and converts it into a 3-dimensional virtual model on the computer screen. Your dentist then uses his or her dental expertise to design the inserting block into milling chamber restoration using the CEREC® 3D computer program. Within a few minutes, your dentist clicks a

our child’s lifelong love of learning begins at Country Montessori School (CMS) – where children experience an authentic Montessori education in a peaceful, spacious environment. Here, children successfully transition from concrete activities to advanced abstract thinking. Highly respected in North San Diego for over 25 years and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CMS is a full member of the American Montessori Society. Country Montessori educates children ages 2.5 to 11 with an individualized, comprehensive curriculum that allows them to thrive. “CMS develops intellectual, responsible, caring members of the community and world,” said Adela Corrales, Head of School. She oversees daily operations at the school, a nonprofit organization governed by a parent/teacher board of directors. The school provides additional instruction in music, Spanish, art, physical education, and technology. “The key Montessori philosophy is fostering the children’s enthusiasm for learning,” said Adela. Montessori learning materials are designed to invite discovery and grow with the child, containing multiple levels of challenge. “We are a collaborative community where older students serve as role models for our younger students,” said Adela. “Students are a part of a community, not just a school.

“Students are a part of a community, not just a school.”

We believe in educating the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and social.” Small class sizes and a team teaching approach help students feel comfortable and engaged. Elementary classes have just 10 students per teacher and early childhood classes have 12 students per teacher. Each classroom is led by two to four AMS credentialed teachers, so students can draw from the strengths of multiple teachers. Enhanced technology curriculum advances development. The school has just installed 12 new HP Envy Recline computers, allowing students to develop skills in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. The technology curriculum is further enhanced through collaboration with ThoughtSTEM, a computer science education company. After School program offers new experiences. CMS is expanding its After School program this year to include Drama, Dance, Chess, Baton, Playball, Yoga, Sewing, Cooking, Lego and Coding. These classes give children the opportunity to discover new activities, skills, and passions. Bringing nature and peace into learning. The Parent Teacher Committee’s recent Walka-Thon raised funds for a new serene garden area on campus where outdoor classes can take place. Nature and peace education are a focus of Montessori education and CMS will be expanding these in the new garden area. Open doors for personal tours. For parents who are looking for the best learning environment for their child, a personal tour of the school is highly recommended. “We encourage families to see first-hand what the

CMS experience is all about,” says Adela. “Call us for a tour and we will personally show you around the campus, introduce you to staff, and answer any questions you might have about the Montessori program, our curriculum, and our students’ success.” ¢

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD

CARING FOR

OUR COAST

Local Nonprofits are Working to Keep Our Backyard Beautiful – And So Can You by LAINEY KRAL

D

uring the first few months of 2016, many of us are making commitments to improve our daily lives – whether that means organizing our homes, getting outside more, or prioritizing time with our friends and families. It’s the perfect time to get together and turn that motivation towards cleaning up our coastline as well. San Diego is famously known as America’s Finest City, and we earned that nickname in no small part thanks to our gorgeous beaches. Locals and tourists alike flock to our shores almost year-round. This level of human activity can leave its mark, but luckily we also have a number of organizations dedicated to removing litter and preserving our environment. While we wait for the water to warm up again, take the opportunity to learn about some of the local organizations that are working hard to keep our backyard beautiful – and how you can be part of the progress. ¢

I Love a Clean San Diego

San Diego Coastkeeper

I Love a Clean San Diego hosts both beach and inland cleanups throughout the region. Upcoming events include Tsunami Sweepers on Jan. 23 – a cleanup at Torrey Pines State Beach to help clean up debris still washing ashore from the 2011 Japanese Tsunami – and Cupid’s Cleanup on Feb. 13 – a cleanup meeting behind Benchmark Brewing Company to pick up litter from surrounding streets and the San Diego River.

San Diego Coastkeeper teams up with Surfrider Foundation to host semi-monthly cleanups across the county. Businesses have the option of sponsoring special corporate cleanups, which make a great teambuilding exercise while helping the environment. Coastkeeper also provides Beach Cleanups in a Box – a kit with supplies for up to 25 people to organize their own cleanup. Participants are asked to complete and return Coastkeeper’s data sheets after their cleanup.

Surfrider Foundation San Diego and San Diego Coastkeeper’s regular cleanups are open to the public and held from 9 to 11 a.m. unless otherwise noted. Pre-registration is only needed for groups of 25 or more. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes, hats, and sunscreen. Businesses are also encouraged to sponsor scheduled beach cleanups. Surfrider Foundation has a number of other projects, including Ocean Friendly Gardens, which advocates for native and climate-appropriate landscapes to prevent pollution from urban water runoff.

RB High Football Wins CIF Championships

R

B High’s football team has finally done it. After an 8-2 regular season that earned them the title of Palomar League champions, the first time RB High had won the title consecutively, the team powered on through the playoff games to ultimately beat Mount Carmel 41-23 in the CIF Division II championship game on Dec. 5 at Southwestern College. In other words, the team has finally “finished the mission” they left incomplete at the end of last year. Last year, RB High’s football team surprised when it returned from a onevictory season in 2013 to win the league title, before charging straight to the Division

II championship played against El Capitan. They lost that game but still came out winners, breaking a drought that stretched back to 2004. That was the last time RB High was the Palomar League champion. Before that, 2001 was the last time RB High had played in a championship game. Throughout the season and into the championship, the team has been strengthened by a sense of brotherhood that has allowed them to succeed. “It’s like playing and thinking as one,” wide receiver DeVaughn Vele said. This ability to work together as a team,

coupled with the strong resolve to finish strong by attaining what they had fallen short of the previous year, was what truly allowed them to succeed. “We need to finish what we started,” Lindgren said. “We were so close last year.” With their goal reached, they can now proceed toward the state championships with a new sense of confidence. ¢

Auxiliary Unit Gives Back ANNUAL POINSETTIA SALE BENEFITS RADY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

T

he Rancho Bernardo Unit of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary was proud to celebrate its 20 th Annual Poinsettia Sale. Every year the RB Unit sells poinsettia plants within the community to support a different program at Rady Children’s Hospital. The fundraiser was spearheaded by Tammy Young and resulted in approximately 1,250 plants sold, all of which were distributed within three days. This year the unit directed proceeds towards the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), which provides the highest level of medical care for sick children. PICU allows intensive nursing care and continuous monitoring of heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure, as well as ventilators and medications requiring more attentive supervision. Rady Children’s Hospital has 23 auxiliary units in San Diego County. The RB Unit was established in 1971 and currently consists of 38 total members and 17 active members from Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Poway, Escondido, and Valley Center. The unit meets the third Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. at the Country Club of

The RB Unit is always open to community members interested in joining or learning more. “Our unit likes to have fun!” said Publicity Chair Marcie Sands. “We are a nice blend of ages and personalities, all with the best care of children at heart. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Season’s Greetings and a Strong Real Estate Outlook for 2016! C

alifornia’s housing market is expected to improve in 2016, but a shortage of available inventory and continuing high costs are expected to limit the improvement, according to a report released Thursday by the California Association of Realtors (CAR). Most California real estate market predictions for 2016 call for continued, but more modest, home-price gains. Low mortgage rates should continue to lure buyers into the market between now and the end of this year. But a gradual rise in interest rates and home prices (which is what many have predicted) could price some buyers out of the market. So while there is room for continued growth in most housing markets across California, we probably shouldn’t expect the kinds of gains seen over the last couple of years. According to CAR’s 2016 California Housing Market Forecast, existing home

sales are expected to rise in 2016 by 6.3% over 2015’s expected total. The state’s rising prices are predicted to hold back home sales slightly. The California median home price is projected to increase 3.2% to $491,300 in 2016, following a projected 6.5% increase in 2015 to $476,300. Despite those increasing prices, 2016 is still estimated to have the slowest rate of price appreciation in five years. The average for 30-year fixed mortgage interest rates will rise only slightly to 4.5 percent but still remain at historically low levels, CAR said. “The foundation for California’s housing market remains strong, with moderating home prices, signs of credit easing, and the state continuing to lead the nation in economic and job growth,” said CAR Vice President and Chief Economist Leslie Appleton-Young. “However, the global economic slowdown,

financial market volatility, and the anticipation of higher interest rates are some of the challenges that may have an adverse impact on the market’s momentum next year.” For a valued home estimate reach out to the experts at Dan Conway & Associates for our 50+ years of combined Real Estate expertise.
