Camps. Camps. And More Camps!

Associate Editors can’t believe we are thinking about summer already! Where does the time go? I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a little overwhelming. Two or more months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, last year we brought you the 1st Annual Summer Camp Guide. We had no idea of how popular it was going to be. This year, I am proud to present the 2nd Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 36). It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in the magazine! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher
Camp Stories From The ZCode Team “I was lucky enough to attend a four-day football camp when I was a kid. We stayed in dormitories, ran cool training drills, watched football tapes, and made some great friends along the way. It was an awesome experience!” – Derrick, Publisher
“Leaving the classroom for the dance studio was always one of my favorite things about summer. I remember attending ballet and tap dance camps, and loving every minute! Summer camp activities are a great way to energize yourself and get active.” – Randi, Associate Editor
“One of my best camp memories was with the YMCA. It was held in Balboa Park. I have memories of shooting bow and arrows and learning lots about different cultures. I saw how they made teepees and learned traditional dances. It was a lot of fun.” – Jessica, Director of Business Development

Future Cities
LOCAL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR CREATIVE CITY MODELS
L
ocal students from St. Michael’s School were recently among 40 teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students competing at the Southern California regional Future City Competition. The local event was held in Encinitas, and volunteers from the local engineering community served as judges. Nationwide, the competition includes over 40,000 students from 1,350 middle schools. The Future City program inspires students to explore the engineering design process, project management, and solutions to real-world problems. Students spend around four months creating their cities, which are designed to exist at least 100 years in the future. This year’s theme was Waste Not, Want Not, and students had to design a citywide solid waste management system. Teams submitted a 1,500-word essay outlining their solution to the theme; a virtual city slideshow; a to-scale city model made of recycled material with at least one moving part and a $100 budget; a seven-minute presentation to the judges; and a project plan outlining their process. Teams from St. Michael’s School won two special category awards. Hope Valley, designed and built by Allyson Atkins, Ann Palayur, and Vianna Schatz, was honored for Best Transportation. Luminous City, created by Annie Pehrson, Lauren Kogelman, and Madeline Duley, was the People’s Choice Award winner, selected by ballot.

Renee VanHeel Makes it Easy for Businesses to Donate to Charity by LINDA FRABL | photo by Spark Photography
R
enee VanHeel, a local businesswoman with a charitable disposition, has exhibited entrepreneurial skills ever since she was a young girl growing up in Minnesota. By the time she was 18 she had inherited her dad’s flailing costume jewelry business and, 20 years later, she was the sales manager for its showrooms all across the country. She recalled, “I was raised in a family business so I have been self-employed my entire life. I knew at age 10 that I would own my own business!” Now Renee is the founder and president of Pay it Forward Processing, a credit card processing company, and its corresponding Every Swipe Benefits Charity. Her company enables businesses to easily deposit their net proceeds directly into their chosen charities without paying extra processing costs. Renee exclaimed, “In just two years we have donated over $100,000 to carefully vetted nonprofits such as the ALS Association, the American Institute for Cancer Research, and the Boys & Girls Club, to name a few.” Renee and her husband moved their family to Rancho Bernardo from Minnesota in 1998 because the milder climate was healthier for the eldest of her three sons, who was born with a rare form of arthritis. Renee explained, “The humidity of the Minnesota summers was

destroying him. When we reached the calm, sunny Rancho Bernardo weather, I knew this was where he could thrive.” With firsthand knowledge of the importance of healthy living, Renee also created GCE Health, a health and wellness business that provides corporate wellness programs and individual health coaching. She elaborated, “Knowing how important my health is in correlation to how well I work, I formed GCE Health to coach others toward gaining their optimal health.” Always wanting to extend service to others (“I have the polite Midwest hospitality driven into my soul,” Renee laughed), Renee was especially motivated to do her part after the 2007 Rancho Bernardo fires destroyed her home. Renee and her fellow RB residents established Fired Up Sisters, an organization that helps other fire survivors recover physiologically and emotionally. In her free time, Renee loves doing puzzles, traveling to new places, and reading. Grateful for her wonderful Rancho Bernardo surroundings, Renee proclaimed, “Our community is incredible because family-friendly people are always willing to lend a hand.” It sounds like the perfect location for someone as giving as Renee.

Everyone A Reader PRINCIPAL AND PARENT VOLUNTEER ARE WORKING TO START READING PROGRAM AT HRES
L
ocal Highland Ranch Elementary School is working to implement a program called Everyone A Reader. The volunteer program matches trained tutors with students who have been chosen by their teachers to get extra reading practice. Through research-based instructional methods, the volunteers help the students improve their reading skills. Everyone A Reader is a county-wide program run by the San Diego County Office of Education and is already in place at many local schools, but the 20162017 school year will be its debut at Highland Ranch. “The idea is to allow extra practice to help students advance to their appropriate grade reading level,” explained Elise TiregolPala, a parent volunteer who is spearheading the program along
with Principal Cindy Venolia. “The program initially will focus on first grade students, but given the number of volunteers according to need, we hope to include second grade as well.” She and Principal Venolia are currently in search of volunteers, particularly local parents and retirees who want to spend time giving back to the community’s youths. Volunteers will be asked to commit to one hour a week working individually with students in the program. There will be an information and training session before the school year starts. Community members interested in volunteering should contact Principal Venolia at cvenolia@powayusd.com. Learn more about the program at www.sdcoe.net, and find out more about HRES at www.powayusd.com/pusdhres. ¢

Even though Georgia Pucci has only been a 92128 resident for three years, she has made quite a splash into the community. Georgia relocated from Portland, OR with her parents, Anthony and Trilina, and younger siblings, Hayes and Charlotte, and she has found the Sabre Springs community to be a great fit. “I love it here because lots of my friends live in my neighborhood and we can walk to school!” exclaimed Georgia. A third grader at Creekside Elementary, Georgia loves math and appreciates the diverse offerings at the school, like Spanish and karate. She has even

It’s my favorite way to volunteer,” she explained. Volunteering is a way of life for Georgia, from organizing an afterschool litter cleanup to handing out blessing bags to the homeless. But Georgia’s title as Miss Beach Cities, sponsored by the Children’s Youth Empowerment Council, has provided her a public service platform. “I use my title to volunteer within my community, specifically bringing awareness to my platform of responsibility to not text and drive,” Georgia explained. Part of her platform included filming a commercial with the Sheriff’s Department about the dangers of texting and driving, which now airs in theaters before movies. She has also been recognized by the Girl Scouts of America for her entrepreneurship and commitment to cookie sales. While her mom signed her up for Girl Scouts to make new friends, Georgia has received much more from the organization. “I get selfconfidence knowing that I can do anything and learn how to be a kind and good role model in my community,” she acknowledged. That self-confidence has its roots at home. Georgia shared one of her biggest inspirations: “My mom says ‘If you can see it, you can make it happen,’ so I know that whatever I can see in my mind I can make happen in my life when I grow up.” Georgia sees herself growing up to be a dance teacher, another passion in her life. For all her time in the public and with friends, Georgia admitted her favorite activity is Saturday movie night at home with her family.

Five Nutrition Myths Busted by CHRISTEN BENKE, D.O.; Scripps Clinic, Del Mar
Don’t let nutrition myths sabotage your health goals, whether those are losing weight, having more energy, or getting more exercise. Don’t eat after 8 p.m. The theory is that you burn up food you eat earlier in the day, while calories eaten at night sit in your system and turn into fat. In reality, calories can’t tell time, and your body uses calories the same way morning, noon, and night. If those late-night calories are not burned while you watch TV or sleep, they will be the next day once you start moving. That said, make sure you are not snacking late at night because you are tired and have mistaken fatigue for hunger. How much you eat and what you eat is far more important than when you eat it. If I exercise, I should take a protein supplement or protein shake. While it is true that when exercising, particularly at a high intensity, you need to
make sure you eat enough protein for your muscles to grow and repair, most people, even athletes, can get all the protein they need by eating sources of lean protein, such as meat, fish, chicken, and dairy products. In some specific instances, protein powders may be useful for an ordinary athlete, such as for a teenager who is growing, when you are recovering from an injury, when you are increasing your workouts (such as training for a half-marathon), or if you are going vegan. Be careful, though, as it doesn’t take much protein to achieve these goals and overloading can be hard on your kidneys and liver. A gluten-free diet is healthier. Unless you have a legitimate reason to eliminate gluten from your diet, such as celiac disease, you can eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. While gluten itself doesn’t offer special nutritional benefits, many whole grains that contain gluten do, so before eliminating gluten, get tested if you think you may have an issue.
Vegetarian and vegan diets are healthier. A vegetarian or vegan diet can certainly be healthy, but it depends on what foods are being eaten. Technically, eating a diet of cheese and chocolate would be vegetarian, but not healthy. Avoiding meat and dairy products eliminates the saturated fat and health issues from overeating fatty meats and high-fat dairy, but vegan and vegetarian diets are only healthier if you replace the meat and dairy with healthy alternatives. What is true of vegetarian and vegan diets is that they are generally environmentally friendly and more sustainable than a diet heavy in meat. ¢
Sugar should not be in my diet. All types of sugar – including fructose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose – are broken down in our bodies into glucose, which our cells use for energy. Some of these sugars, such as fructose and lactose, occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, and other foods. But

many of the foods we love contain added sugars, usually to enhance flavor, and these added sugars have been cited as contributors to many health problems. The most common sources of added sugars include soft drinks, cakes, pies, fruit drinks, and chocolate. A rule of thumb is that sugar should always be accompanied by as many nutrients as possible, and added sugar should be avoided.

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE
Ingredients 1 1 2 1 2 1 1 1 2 1 ¼ 2 4½ 1 ½ 2 ¾
cup vegetable oil pound Andouille Sausage, cut into 1-inch pieces large boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces large yellow onion, chopped cloves garlic, minced cup diced celery large red pepper, stemmed, seeded, diced large green pepper, stemmed, seeded, diced bay leaves teaspoon of dried basil teaspoon of cayenne pepper cups of long grain white rice cups of defatted chicken broth cup of tomato sauce cup of tomato paste pounds uncooked, medium shrimp, peeled, deveined cup fresh flat leaf parsley Salt and pepper and Old Bay spice to taste
Directions 1.
2. 3.
4.
5.
Heat oil in very large, heavy pot over medium heat. Add sausage and cook until brown, 10 minutes, turning often. Using slotted spoon, transfer to a covered bowl and set aside. Sprinkle chicken pieces with salt, pepper, and Old Bay. Add to the pot and brown, 10 minutes, then transfer to bowl with sausage. Add onions to the pot, turn to low heat and cook until wilted, 10 minutes. Add garlic, celery, both bell peppers, bay leaves, basil, and cayenne. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring often. Add the rice to the pot with the vegetables. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the sausage and chicken to the pot. Add the broth, tomato sauce, and tomato paste and increase heat to bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover the pot, and cook for 20 to 25 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Stir in the shrimp and parsley and cook covered, until the shrimp turn pink, for 5 minutes. Adjust the seasonings. Remove the bay leaves and enjoy!
Secret: Make ahead the day before and reheat in the pot on low heat – the flavors have a chance to blend together. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

artha and James Madigan are middle school sweethearts. They met in church youth group in Sterling, VA. James played trombone and Martha was a vocalist. “We got married when we were 21 years old,” mentioned James, “and it has been the best journey one could hope for.” The Madigans moved here in 2012 with two young children. Their littlest joined them a few months ago. James has a B.S. in Business Management from George Mason University and works for AVI Systems as a Project and Relationship Developer. He helps clients implement communications solutions utilizing audiovisual technology. Martha has an associates degree from Northern Virginia Community College. She’s a “pro-mom,” according to James. They both love to photograph portraits and events when time allows. “We enjoy capturing the beautiful and fleeting moments of life,” stated James. It’s the passion behind Martha James Photography.

James puts baby Ryder in his chest carrier for family walks at Torrey Pines beach. Brynley, six, and Asher, three, search for seashells and other beach treasures. James added, “The ocean is good for our collective family soul, and individually as well.” Brynley loves first grade and is “making a hobby of losing her teeth.” She dances, paints, writes, and is a kind big sister. Asher is full of energy. “Asher loves beating up his dad and cuddling with his mama,” added Martha. Brynley and Asher both started gymnastics at the YMCA. Everyone plays with Ryder, who laughs, smiles, and now recognizes his loving family. They are members of C3 Church and volunteer on the Worship and Creative Arts Team. This time, James is on drums, while Martha is vocal director. They feel blessed by the relationships they’ve made. Martha, who grew up in Palm Desert, is closer to several aunts, uncles, and cousins, yet they deeply miss their families and friends in Virginia. This is the adventure they needed to call their own. “Whether we stay and raise our family here in San Diego or back in Virginia,” explained James, “our time here is important, necessary, and has been full of adventure, heartache, tears, happiness, and joy.” James likes to say to his loved ones back east, “It’s tough out here in San Diego, but somebody’s got to do it!” And they’re doing it with gratitude for every day.

PowPAC Presents Private Eyes
This spring, join PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, for a dark comedy of deception and suspicion. Private Eyes reveals its storyline in multiple layers – is Lisa’s affair real, or just part of the play she’s rehearsing? Is her husband Mathew’s dalliance real, or just his imaginary retaliation? The woman he may or may not meet might be a detective or a waitress. From betrayal to selfdeception, nothing is quite as it seems. Private Eyes is written by Steven Dietz, directed by Jay Mower, and produced by Joel Colbourn and Lynn Wolsey. The cast includes Haig Koshkarian as Frank, Joshua Meihaus as Adrian, Fatima Pimienta as Cory, Daniel R. Sky as Mathew, and Brandon Kaye Thomas as Lisa. The play opens Friday, March 18, and closes Sunday, April 10. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Find tickets at www.powpac.org.
Hats Off for Volunteers
The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame, and the Rancho Bernardo High School Foundation are gearing up for the 7th Annual Hats Off to Volunteers, scheduled for Saturday, April 16. Starting at 9 a.m. in the Rancho Bernardo High School auditorium, the free event will recognize 70 local individuals and their contributions to the community. RBCF President Debby Kurth said, “It’s a nice way to say thank you to all the volunteers in different organizations whose representatives are receiving recognition. Hats Off for Volunteers Chairman Nick Anastasopoulos added, “It’s one of my favorite things that we do in conjunction with the RB Hall of Fame and the RBHS Foundation – saying thank you to those who make Rancho Bernardo a wonderful place to live.” Individual volunteers are selected by the leaders of the service organization they participate in. Attendees will be able to learn more about the nominating organizations at their exposition booths before and after the recognition ceremony. Find out more at www.rbhatsoff.org.
Best Buddies Fundraiser
RB Chorale Scholarship
Applications are open from now through April 9 for the 2016 RB Chorale Scholarship program. The program is open to all graduating high school seniors in the county who plan to pursue their musical arts education in college or university. Young musicians from all fields are welcome, including voice, string, wind, percussion, or any other solo instrument. Qualified applicants will audition before the RB Chorale Board and a panel of judges on April 30 at Rancho Bernardo’s Studio West. The six candidates with the highest combined points based on audition, scholastics, and need will then compete again on June 10 and 11 – with three students performing each night – during the RB Chorale’s Showstoppers from Stage and Screen performance at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Awards will be determined by audience ballot voting the evening of each performance. Find the application form and more information at www.rbchorale.org, or contact Scholarship Chair Keith Cheney at 858-748-1273.

Local community members raised $7,390 at the 2016 Best Buddies Fundraiser, held at Players Sports Bar in Poway. The money raised will go towards the Best Buddies Ball, hosted by Rancho Bernardo High School Best Buddies and open to chapters from throughout the county. The event is a prom-like evening for students with disabilities who might not get to enjoy high school dances. Best Buddies International partners students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities, allowing students with disabilities to form lifelong friendships, develop leadership skills, and create deeper connections with the community. This year’s fundraiser was a full house event, with pizza, pool, music, and giveaways galore. “It’s so rewarding to be a part of this organization,” said Event Chair Bill Mullett. “The impact on these kids’ lives is priceless. Their smiles say it all.” Event sponsors were Arizona Tile, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, CCS Global Tech, Cosentino, Daltile, Poway Transmissions, R Douglas Construction, and San Diego Granite.

Women’s Center Fundraiser
The Women of the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo raised $11,164.26 at their latest annual fundraiser event, benefiting the Jean McLaughlin Women’s Center for Health and Healing at Pomerado Hospital. The fundraising event has grown in scope and impact since it was first held several years ago – the inaugural fundraiser in 2013 raised just under $6,000 for the center. Palomar Health Foundation Director of Major Giving Kimberly Cardoso visited the group to talk about the center’s work and its plans for the future. The center is a 10,406-square-foot facility and provides education and support groups in addition to evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. Funds raised will be put towards genetic testing, mammograms, consultations, and follow-up appointments to discuss diagnosis and treatment options.

Supportive Housing Bill
Assembly Bill 1500 recently passed unanimously through the State Assembly. The legislation, by San Diego Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, aims to allow local governments to create more housing opportunities for the homeless. “I am pleased that my bill, which would enable cities and counties to plan for the construction of supportive and transitional housing projects, passed the Assembly,” said Maienschein. “Many of our homeless also suffer from some form of mental illness, and these individuals are the ones who have the greatest need for stable housing.” The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that there were 115,738 homeless Californians in 2015 – 21 percent of the homeless population nationwide. Many social service experts in the state advocate housing-first strategy; by offering safe, secure housing, individuals and families are better able to make use of other necessary services and opportunities to get back on their feet.

Stencils for Service
In mid-January Victor Wisehart, currently on the cast list for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical An American in Paris, taught a master class for advanced dancers at the Southern California Ballet (SCB) studio. A graduate of the dance company, Victor returned home to connect and pass down the knowledge and skills that he developed during his training with SBC, which at the time was called the Black Mountain Dance Center. Victor had performed with the company in numerous productions including Coppelia, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker. On full scholarships, he attended The Joffrey and American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensives and The Boston Conservatory, graduating magna cum laude with a B.F.A. in dance. SCB Executive Director Kate Hirsh stated, “Southern California Ballet is extremely fortunate to have our alumni return home to pass on their experiences and tremendous knowledge to the young students in training.” Learn more at www.southerncaliforniaballet.org.
Local resident Sabine Lawless Reljic recently recruited her children – Andrija, Dakota, and Luka – and visiting cousin Arian Pekaric for a day of creative service. With the day off for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the family painted stencil artwork around the four storm drains at the crossroad of Pomerado Rd. and Rancho Bernardo Rd. The storm drain stenciling program is a project of I Love a Clean San Diego, and Sabine has previously helped the Rancho Bernardo Community Council beautify the area by painting utility boxes. “The children were so proud of themselves for doing this,” said Sabine. “My kindergartener told his friends at school that he was trying to save the fishes by painting on storm drains! They also realized how visible they are, as opposed to being an anonymous resident, and how actions or lack thereof play a role in their own social impact and development.” She shared that passing drivers would give thumbs up as they passed the volunteer painters, and neighborhood acquaintances recognized them at work.

Dancing Into Summer Discover the World of Dance with Southern California Ballet’s Recreational Camp and Summer Intensive by LAINEY KRAL | photos by Frances Marie Reilly and Mark Zetler
Y
oung dancers of all backgrounds can discover a passion for dance this summer at Southern California Ballet. In addition to regular weekly classes, the award-winning company is excited to offer two different categories of camps – Weekly Recreational Camp and Summer Intensive. “The summer camps are meant to introduce new dancers to our curriculum in an enjoyable and educational manner. Dancers get to sample what we do and meet our amazing artistic faculty!” said Executive Director Kate Hirsh. The Weekly Recreational Camp on mornings in June is specially geared for children aged four to six and aged seven to nine. Younger children are introduced to dance through storytelling and creative techniques, with dance steps set to beloved songs like “Puff the Magic Dragon” and “She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain.” Kate explained, “The curriculum is challenging, educational, and amusing, and encompasses slow dances, fast movement, stretching, creative thought, props, and musicality.” Ages seven to nine can explore ballet and a variety of dance styles from contemporary to hip-hop – anything you might see on So You Think You Can Dance. “Emphasis is placed on proper warm-up,
safe stretching techniques, mastering specific moves, finding the dancer’s inner style, and having fun!” added Kate. For dancers who already have some experience in dance, the four-week summer intensive is a great way to delve deeper into the world of dance. Intermediate to advanced dancers have the opportunity to explore the Cecchetti ballet curriculum, commercial-style jazz, modern, contemporary, Stanislavsky method acting, Classical Chinese dance, dance history, and pointe classes. Dancers can sign up for one-week sessions or all four weeks from July 5 through Aug. 1. “As a mom, I love that when I pick up my kids from the studio they are always happy,” shared Andrea in a Yelp review. “As a kid, I grew up learning from Patsy Swayze. Needless to say, I had high expectations when looking for a place for my kids to learn. Southern California Ballet has totally exceeded my expectations.” Southern California Ballet is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary of creative excellence. Under the continuing leadership of renowned Artistic Director Sylvia Palmer, one of only six Cecchetti USA examiners in the nation, the company continues to combine dedicated teachers, comprehensive curriculum, and a fun family atmosphere to provide the ultimate dance experience. ¢

NORTH COUNTY SOCCER PARK
W
hile North County Soccer Park (NCSP) lets children get in on the action with soccer and baseball classes year-round, they provide even more in-depth morning lessons during their summer camp sessions. From June to August, NCSP – the longest running arena soccer facility in Southern California – invites local children of any skill level to learn about soccer and baseball while having fun and making friends on the field. “Our soccer and baseball camps are for any boy or girl, regardless of skill, who are 4-12 years old,” said NCSP’s David Brennan. Each camp session runs for one week per month, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. During a typical day, all campers participate in a combined group warm-up, before breaking up into their age and skill-appropriate groups for the rest of the morning. With a small coach-to-camper ratio, coaches are able to interact personally and get to know each camper, thus better providing them with lessons of sportsmanship, skill development, and safety. In addition to the wellqualified coaching staff, NCSP offers versatile facilities that include both turf and grass fields. With fun always being the focus, David said, “We know it’s been a great camp day when the kids are smiling, laughing, and talking to mom or dad about what they learned that day.” Soccer camps run different weeks from baseball camps, with the exception of August. This summer, NCSP’s soccer camps run June 13-17, July 11-15, and Aug. 8-12. Baseball camps will run June 20-24, July 18-22, and Aug. 8-12. The cost of $130 per camper includes their camp shirt given to them the first day, a concession drink every day, and award certificate on the final day of camp. THERAPEUTIC LITERACY CENTER
W
hile summer vacation offers ample time for students to run, play, and exercise their bodies, it also offers the perfect opportunity to exercise their minds. During the busy school year, students may not get the one-on-one time with a teacher or tutor nor the therapy to develop their underlying weaknesses in learning skills. This is where the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) comes in. While the center, located in Solana Beach, offers specialized training to students year-round, they utilize the extra time that summer affords by offering specialized camp programs to prepare children for success when school starts in the fall. Their summer programming includes an intensive therapy to overcome challenges and learning disabilities by focusing on underlying learning skills, as well as a learning “bootcamp” for children that are strong in their underlying skills but need work in the areas of math, handwriting, or keyboarding. All of TLC’s programs can help a student be successful in the Common Core curriculum. TLC’s summer programs include both group learning experiences and individualized one-on-one sessions, provided by specially trained clinicians. If a full-day program is chosen, the day may even include outings to a surf camp in Solana Beach or an activity at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. “A cognitive bootcamp mixed with hours of outdoor exercise is the perfect summer combination for children wanting to enter their next grade level with confidence in their success,” said Maria Bagby, TLC Executive Director. Because spaces fill up quickly, early registration is encouraged. To learn more about TLC and how they can help eliminate learning challenges in reading, writing, and math visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200. ¢

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS I
nspired by 14 summers of camp experience as a camper, counselor, and director, Stuart Jones decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps, after moving to San Diego in 2001. As the current owners and directors of the camp, Stuart and his wife Kelly strive to provide children with a traditional camp experience that they deserve, complete with outdoor adventures and lasting friendships. A summer at Outpost is free from distraction, as the programs are 100 percent outdoors and device-free – the directors call it “outside and unplugged.” The camps are open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Camps have been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association and have also received Markel Insurance’s coveted Safety First designation for many consecutive seasons with a perfect safety record. Stuart and his wife both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested eight to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. “Individuals are better served in the financial arena by an independent, hands-on advisor.” – Brian McLean
B
rian McLean knows that every individual has different backgrounds, needs, and goals. With BDM Wealth Management, he celebrates those differences by getting to know each client and working out the best plan for their specific situation. “I have structured my practice around my belief that individuals are better served in the financial arena by an independent, hands-on advisor who truly understands the unique aspects of each individual client or family,” shared Brian. By using a fee-based model, he prioritizes his clients’ success. He earned his B.A. from Loyola Chicago and completed his financial planning courses at San Diego State University. After working at a large La Jolla-based planning firm, he decided to establish his own boutique practice in Rancho Bernardo. He said, “Early on in my career I received a solid fundamental education in estate planning for high net worth individuals that has helped me with my overall philosophy of being a comprehensive advisor for all my clients.” That philosophy leads Brian to treat clients like family – he cares about them as individuals and cares about ensuring their success. “I always try to operate in a mode as

though I’m working with my own mother,” said Brian. “If a product or position would or would not be appropriate for my own mom, then it should or should not be presented to my own client.” He feels it’s important to be stable and accessible as an advisor, and brings up his new office and expansion as an example. “I’m happy to report that the consistent growth of my practice has allowed me to recently move into a newly remodeled and significantly expanded office suite in the same building I have been in since 1999. It’s really nice to be working in such an updated and larger space, but still right here where I have been for so many years.” He finds great personal satisfaction in helping new clients straighten out their situations. When a new client comes to him with a confusing portfolio, Brian is able to simplify their investments to reduce overall management fees and give them a better sense of where and how their funds are invested. Brian also finds fulfillment in contributing to the broader community beyond his clientele. He is a past president of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation and a current board member of Rancho Bernardo Senior Services. ¢

:::: HEALTHY SMILES
Can I straighten teeth without braces? The answer is yes, with Invisalign. Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. Traditionally you just pop in a new aligner every two weeks and your teeth move. Since patients’ number one concern before starting is how long treatment will take, Propel has come to the rescue. PROPEL works with the patient’s own biology by stimulating the bone surrounding the teeth, helping the teeth move faster and more predictably into their ideal position. The result allows us to provide the same Invisalign Treatments but with much shorter treatment times. Treatment is typically 50% faster with PROPEL treatment! Usually, each Invisalign aligner needs to be worn for 22 hours per day for 2 weeks to obtain the desired result. Most cases are 12 months in length and most need to have at least one refinement consisting of multiple additional aligners. PROPEL Orthodontics is a newly introduced system that speeds Invisalign treatment, with aligner changes twice as fast at 7 to10 days, and with reduced or no need for refinements. A 12-month treatment can then be completed in as little as 6 months.

oms aking Six Figures D
r. Barbara Ryan, a surgeon of many years, chose to make a change in her career in 2010 for greater flexibility. “I enjoyed being a surgeon and caring for my patients immensely, however, the medical arena was changing and I simply didn’t have flexibility in my schedule that would allow me to balance my personal and professional lives; something many women struggle with," said Barbara. "Also, my husband is in the military and has no control over where we get stationed, meaning everything I poured into building a surgical practice (time, energy, and money) could be wiped out with one phone call. Not only did I want more time to spend with my husband and also to care for my aging parents, I wanted to ensure that when I built up a substantial income it was portable, no matter where the military said we needed to be.” So, Barbara teamed up with two other women to create Moms Making Six Figures. “I knew that I wasn’t the only woman juggling family and career. Now, six years later, it feels phenomenal to not only have that flexibility personally, but to also show others a viable means of achieving financial success while maintaining a balanced life. For some, that means income replacement, and for others it means creating supplemental income around family life or their current jobs.” Barbara insists that anyone, regardless of her background, can do this: “We all have very different educational and professional backgrounds and our own unique personalities, but we all want flexibility around our families and the chance to build a business while helping others,” said Barbara. “Moms” is a marketing company that represents a U.S.-based manufacturer. Though based in San Diego, many of the nearly 90 women who work with Moms live all over – West Coast, East Coast, Midwest, and the South. Of these women, about half work 25-plus hours per week. Their only qualifications are that they’re self-motivated, hard-working, and coachable. Barbara invites interested women to reach out through www.momsmakingsixfigures.com. “Learn a little more about who we are and what we do. It’ll be well worth your time,” she said.

ancho Bernardo resident Morgan Macedo has been putting her entertainment experience towards a charitable cause. As an artist manager working with country artist Greg White Jr., she organized his first concert in support of Homes for Our Troops. Held at the Horton Grand Theatre in the Gaslamp Quarter, the event drew in nearly 200 attendees and featured special guest performer Mike Lounibos and openers Josh Miranda Band and Dannie Marie. Also attending were author R.J. Belle and her fiancé, Sgt. Toran Gaal. R.J. took the stage to talk about her fiancé, Homes for Our Troops, Warriors Foundation Freedom Station, and her book, After – from which
all the proceeds will be donated to Warriors Foundation Freedom Station. A portion of the proceeds from Greg White Jr.’s newest single, “Fullest Life,” will also be donated to the organization, and the song was used for the book trailer for After. A portion of ticket sales from the concert itself was donated towards the Homes for Our Troops project to build a specially adapted home for Sgt. Gaal. Helping wounded veterans is a personal cause for Greg, who serves in the U.S. Navy and is
stationed in Coronado. Morgan first moved to Rancho Bernardo in 1999, and attended Rancho Bernardo High School through 2002. After moving around, she returned to 92128 two years ago. She’s explored a variety of corners of the entertainment industry, from modeling to film acting to directing. In addition to her role as artist manager, she currently owns Macedo Images and works as a photographer, artist, editor, director, and cinematographer. ¢

STARGAZING IN SAN DIEGO
These Breathtaking Views Will Have You Seeing Stars – Literally by SHYANNE LOPEZ

eing surrounded by beaches, beautiful landscapes, and a sprawling city, it's no wonder we tend to keep our eyes focused on what is laid out right in front of us. While known for its sunny and clear skies, come sunset, parts of San Diego's skyline are anything but empty – you just have to look up. For years, the area has attracted professional and amateur astronomers and stargazers alike for the highly accessible view of not just stars but also our own galaxy and nearby planets. In fact, this spring, Mars will be the largest and most clear that it's been in more than a decade. It's the perfect occasion to bring out your inner astronomer. While it's tough to stargaze in highly developed areas, you can view them with ease at various rural locations in and around the county that have remained virtually untouched by city lights. So, if you're interested in catching a glimpse of the cosmos this spring, jump in your car and check out one – or all – of these unique destinations. ¢
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Two hours east of San Diego, you can find California's largest state park. The desert is a hot spot for professional and amateur stargazers due to its seclusion from urban lights. In fact, the park's neighboring town of Borrego Springs was designated in 2009 as the second "Dark Sky Community" in the world by the International Sky Association, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the nighttime environment.
Tierra Del Sol
Julian
Located in southeastern San Diego County is the Tierra Del Sol observing site. Established by the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA), the site is home to monthly star parties that are open to the public. Star parties offer visitors the opportunity to observe the sky through professional telescopes, and receive guided viewings from experienced astronomers. Learn more at www.sdaa.org.
Primarily known for its apple orchards, this quaint mountain town actually has night skies dark enough to host the SDAA's annual Julian StarFest each summer. This spring, you can admire and explore their starry skies by checking out nearby campgrounds or parks. If you don't feel like roughing it, the town also boasts its own astronomy-themed bed and breakfast.

Torrey Pines State Reserve While you won't see as many stars from Torrey Pines State Reserve, just north of La Jolla, it offers darker skies than expected and doesn't require a road trip. The beach offers the perfect location to look up at the cosmos, complete with the sound of crashing waves. Torrey Pines stays open until 11 p.m., and since it won't be peak visiting hours, catching road-side parking should be a cinch.

onated blood is crucial to saving lives, with the potential to be transformed into 22 different medical treatments. At RB High this month, students came together with the Red Cross to support this important cause. With the help of ASB volunteers and psychology teacher Michael Innumerable, countless individuals came together to run the collection. Throughout the day, students who had signed up to donate were pulled out of class. After they had given blood, each donor was refreshed with a treat of
nachos. In all, approximately 100 students participated, according to Red Cross Senior Account Manager Denise Coughlin. The school was able to collect over 700 units of blood – a not insubstantial amount that will undoubtedly be critical in the lives of others. Before being sent to treat others, the blood is first tested in a lab and then used for a variety of purposes, treating everyone from car accident victims to those receiving surgeries. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
2016 Real Estate Began with a Bang! I
n my previous article I wrote that the real estate market would continue to flourish. I’ll pat myself on the back – it’s beginning to explode! We already seen a healthy growth in home sales and pricing as an indication the marketplace is stable. Distress sales will no longer be playing a role, new construction is returning to more traditional levels, and prices will rise at a more consistent rate with a more balanced market. Millennials emerged as a dominant force in 2015. This pattern will continue in 2016 as their large numbers combined with improving personal financial conditions will enable enough buyers between ages 25 and 34 to move the market. The majority of those buyers will be first-timers, but that will require other generations to also play larger roles. Those from Generation X are
in their prime earning years and able to relocate to better neighborhoods for their families. Baby boomers approaching retirement are seeking to downsize and lock in a lower cost of living. We should see a strong growth in new home sales and single-family construction as builders offer more affordable product. Buyers of all ages should consider new homes, but availability will be highly dependent on location, particularly in the desirable coastal areas. I told you mortgage rates would go up sometime in 2015, and they did. However, they also went back down. The level of increase has been manageable, even though higher rates will drive monthly payments higher along with debtto-income ratios increasing. Rent is accelerating at a more rapid pace than home prices. I’ve seen asking rent on
vacant units increase at a double-digit pace in the second half of this year. More than 85% of U.S. markets have rents that exceed 30% of the income of renting households. This trend does not bode well for the health of the housing market. It will improve when construction of affordable rentals as well as more of a pathway for renters to become homeowners.
