hard to flip through the pages of your 92128 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).

LOCAL RESIDENTS CONTINUE HELPING CHILDREN THROUGH HOSPITAL IN UGANDA
A
group of Rancho Bernardo and San Diego locals has been making a big impact for children near Mbarara, Uganda. In 2007, a team formed under the leadership of San Diego resident Tom Thomas and Poway resident Lane Freestone with the goal of building the first dedicated children’s hospital in Uganda. Two years later, Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital opened its doors. “Since then, nearly 25,000 children ages 12 and under have been admitted to the 60-bed hospital,” explained Lee Haney, Director and CFO on the hospital’s board of directors as well as a resident of 92128. “More than 120,000 additional children have received medical care at the outpatient clinic.” The board of directors is composed entirely of volunteers, and most of the other
people involved are volunteers as well. This means that over 97 percent of donations are spent directly on hospital programs – the remainder goes towards fundraising expenses and tax return preparation. The board currently consists of Co-Founder Lane Freestone, MBA; CFO Lee Haney; Anita J. Hunter, Ph.D., RN; Bonaventure Turyomumazima, Ph.D.; Ms.gr. Dennis Mikulanis, S.T.D.; Scott Schafer, Esq.; Florence Kyomugisha, Ph.D.; Michael Lynch; and Michael L. Levy, M.D., Ph.D., FACS.
The hospital continues to grow. A 9,000-square-foot surgical center is currently under construction. When complete, the center will include two surgical suites, an x-ray room, a laboratory, and other facilities. It will be equipped to complete up to 200 pediatric surgeries a month. The team broke ground in October 2015, and the surgical center is scheduled to be completed within the year. Learn more about recent updates at www.holyinnocentsuganda.com. ¢

Top Honors & Tough Challenges Isabelle Demange Succeeds at School and on the Dance Stage by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Spark Photography
F
inishing her seventh grade year at The Academy at Meadowbrook Middle School, Isabelle Demange of Sabre Springs focuses her time on school, friends, and dance. At The Academy, Isabelle explained that her favorite subject is language arts because she enjoys reading and writing. Beyond the academics, she shared, “I love the Meadowbrook Academy because I see my friends every day, and I really like the teachers.” Her friends and teachers play a big role in her love for dance as well. “One of the most rewarding parts of competitive dance is that we have just as much fun when we aren’t dancing. I love just hanging out with my friends on the team,” Isabelle said. “I love coming off the stage and having them there to support me.” For inspiration, Isabelle looks to her dance teachers “because they work hard and push me to be my best,” she acknowledged.

Isabelle has been dancing competitively for five years. As a young child, she began with ballet and tap, but in the second grade she transitioned to competitive dance. “My mom signed me up for more dance classes, including jazz, musical theater, and lyrical,” she explained. “I began competing in third grade doing both group dances and a solo.” Isabelle has earned numerous
“One of the most rewarding parts of competitive dance is that we have just as much fun when we aren’t dancing.” awards in competition, including top spots in regional and national competitions. This year, one of her group dances was recognized with the Top Choreographer Award out of the 545 routines at the competition. But the rewards are not without the challenges. Isabelle has had three broken bones and two overuse injuries this last season. “I had to dance at Nationals with a cast on my hand,” she shared. These physical challenges, though, have helped to define Isabelle’s future. “I would like to become an orthopedist,” she said. “I became interested in this specialty after I broke my hand last season.”

She served as vice president and trustee for the San Diego Unified School District’s Board of Education, and was the first Asian/Pacific Islander elected to the board. “Mitz Lee has played an important role in making our community a better
place to live,” said Maienschein. “Her work with neighborhood projects and nonprofit organizations exemplifies the ideals of the Woman of the Year award.”
Lee has previously been recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives, the California Legislature, and city officials. Other awards include the Governor and First Lady’s Service Award and honors from the Military Spouse Business and Professional Network, the Asian Business Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. “It is an honor to be named the 77th District Woman of the Year,” Lee said. “This award inspires me to help others in the community to go above and beyond the call of duty to make San Diego, the state, and our nation a better place to live.” Lee received her award during a special ceremony in the Assembly Chambers in Sacramento. ¢

Teaming Up
The Tight-Knit Rice Family is Making the Most of Rancho Bernardo by LAINEY KRAL | photo by Off Guard Photography
T
he Rice family has lived in Rancho Bernardo for just over a year, and it’s a perfect fit. “We are a dual working, blended family, so geography is really crucial for all members of our team,” shared Shannon Miller-Rice. The rest of the team is made up of her husband, David, and their sons Ethan (11) and Dillon (4). Rancho Bernardo is perfectly located for their needs – David’s office is in San Marco, Ethan attends school and splits time at his father’s house in La Jolla, and Dillon attends school in Poway. “We are a very close group, which extends to Ethan’s father and grandfather, and my mom, who all participate to help raise these two boys,” explained Shannon. “Our mission is to raise

healthy and upstanding citizens, who see and learn from our behaviors and relationships.” The boys are doing their parents proud. Ethan – who has played baseball, surfed, and built lasting friendships at Torrey Pines Elementary School – transitions to middle school in September. Dillon is thriving with Country Montessori School’s structure and teaching techniques. Shannon was raised in Fresno. She currently puts her bachelor’s in applied arts from San Diego State to creative use with her boutique interior design firm – Payte Miller Interiors. David hails from Barbados and graduated from Cornell University of Hotel Administration. After serving as president and CEO of the Barbados Tourism Authority, he’s now vice president of strategic initiatives at the Welk Resort. Both parents are active volunteers. Shannon is a CMS classroom ambassador and fundraising committee member, and also participates in mentorship programs for aspiring designers. David has served as a board member for American Heroes Tribute, and is currently a CMS board member. “We are an active family with two boys – one can imagine there are lots of events to attend,” said Shannon. “Ethan plays baseball year-round, and Dillon is learning his way through soccer.” David is an avid golfer, tennis player, and cyclist. He added, “Shannon is forever moving, her Fitbit buzzing daily with the number of steps she takes to manage her business, get the boys where they need to be, and circling back around at the end of every day.” The Rice family has a lot going on, and they’re enjoying every minute of it together.

ess than 10 years ago, Feeding America San Diego was started with just two employees. Without a warehouse or forklift, they distributed over three million pounds of food. “Today, Feeding America San Diego generates more than 20 million pounds of food annually for those facing hunger throughout San Diego,” explained Al Brislain, CEO of Feeding America San Diego. Al joined the team at Feeding America San Diego in 2015, bringing with him 35 years of experience in hunger-relief organizations. Feeding America San Diego is the leading hunger-relief organization in San Diego. “We work to distribute healthy food with dignity to San Diego residents struggling with hunger,” Al stated. As the end of the school year approaches, this mission becomes even more critical. “One in five children in San Diego are food insecure, but during the summer months, thousands of children lose access to critical breakfast and lunch programs.” To meet these needs, Feeding America San Diego relies on the support of volunteers. “Last year alone, more than 13,000 volunteers made it possible for us to serve 480,000 San Diegans in need,” Al acknowledged. “It’s a truly incredible thing

to be a part of so much generosity.” The organization will be hosting a special volunteer open house on June 11. “We invite the community to get involved by donating or volunteering,” he shared. “Every dollar given provides four meals through our highly organized distribution model.” A resident of Sabre Springs, Al recently relocated from Florida to join the team at Feeding America San Diego. But as a California native and graduate of UC Davis, his move felt more like coming home. “I love the mountainous terrain and, of course, the proximity to the Pacific,” Al shared. “We’ve had a great time discovering San Diego, especially Balboa Park and the dog beaches.” Al also enjoys playing softball, reading, walking with his wife, and playing with their five grandchildren. The vision of Feeding America San Diego is a hunger-free and healthy San Diego. “My wish would be that no San Diegan would go to bed hungry, especially children and seniors,” Al explained. “When children don’t get enough food, it has an impact on everything they do. We need to make sure children and families have the food they need to be healthy and succeed.”

Creek to Bay
LOCAL GROUPS JOIN ANNUAL CLEANUP EVENT
I
Love a Clean San Diego’s 14th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup drew a wide array of environmentally minded volunteers to 110 sites around the county. Over 6,000 volunteers removed 150,000 pounds of litter from the San Diego landscape during the three-hour event. Over three quarters of the sites were focused on inland areas, including canyons, waterways, and street sweeps. Eighty-three volunteers joined forces to clean up at 4S Ranch Sports Park, including Assemblymember Brian Maienschein and his daughter, Taylin. He shared, “The Creek to Bay Cleanup is a great opportunity for people to celebrate Earth Month, give back to our local communities, and put their appreciation for the environment into action at more than 100 coastal and inland sites.” Families from Country Montessori School joined another cleanup site at nearby Poway Community Park. A team of 11 elementary school students created the design for CMS cleanup t-shirts. After the cleanup, PTC Chair Nadia Salas remarked on how excited the students were about the opportunity to make a difference in the community. ILACSD was founded in 1954 as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee. Ever since then, the organization has grown in scope and impact to become an influential advocate for local sustainability. ILACSD offers a number of educational and volunteer programs, including Keep America Beautiful, Clean Beach Coalition, Stormwater Outreach and Education Program, and AdoptA-Beach Program. They offer regular beach and inland cleanup events. Learn more at www.cleansd.org. ¢

:::: COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
FOR UGANDA’S YOUTH Lee Haney Volunteers His Financial Expertise with Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital in Mbarara, Uganda by LYDIA COBB | photo by Spark Photography
L
ee Haney, a retired CFO, knows his math. He knows, for example, how one person here can make a difference in the lives of thousands of children far away. He was introduced to Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital’s mission at a meeting in 2007. “I learned that more than 17,000 children a year in Mbarara, Uganda, under age 12, were dying from largely preventable diseases in an area about the size of San Diego County,” revealed Lee. “The organization was looking for a person with financial experience to join and assist.” Formed here in Rancho Bernardo in 2007 and opened by 2009, Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital (HICH) provides medical care for the children of Mbarara. Lee added, “More than 25,000 children have been admitted to the 60bed hospital, and 122,000 children have been treated at the outpatient clinic. The lives of children have been saved.” Additionally, more than 10,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets have been distributed by HICH. Lee helps with fundraising events and funds management. He’s the project manager of the $1.5 million dollar surgical center under construction in Mbarara, with plans to build an additional 60-bed hospital. HICH assisted with operating costs of the hospital those first three years. The people of Uganda now sustain the facility. Counting back, Lee’s finance career began at SDG&E. He retired in 1994 as Senior VP in Finance and CFO. He moved to New York for the same position at a utility company, where he officially retired in 1999. Lee grew up in Kansas and cherished freshwater fishing. He shared, “I can catch more fish in a day there than in 10 years here.” He and his family came back to San Diego after his retirement and settled in RB. He married his second wife in 1991. Together, they have seven children and 15 grandchildren. His volunteerism continues locally with Rotary International Sunrise Club and Knights of Columbus. He’s planning a pasta fundraising dinner for Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital on July 30 at San Rafael Catholic Church. While retirement for some might mean a break from their professions, Lee stays in touch with the world of finance – adding up ways to help make the world a better place for all.

Future Problem Solvers LOCAL STUDENTS ATTEND STATE MEET FOR INTERNATIONAL PROBLEM-SOLVING COMPETITION
F
uture Problem Solving is an international competition involving students from 40 states and 15 countries from around the world. Students are assigned topics to research, then have to identify and create solutions for real-world problems. The contest is designed to foster creative critical thinking skills by applying techniques to real-world concerns. Nine local students recently attended the FPS State Meet, under the guidance of their coach, Nancy Myles. They were eligible for the State Meet based on their success completing the Qualifying Problem, under the topic of Recovering from Natural Disasters. Nancy shared, “Three children qualified to attend the State Meet as individuals, doing the entire process of FPS alone.” The individual participants were Del Norte High School sophomore Andrew Varvara, Oak Valley Middle School eighth grader Victor Varvara, and Bernardo Heights Middle School student Anish Rajendran. A junior team of sixth graders also qualified: Maddie Engblom and Kylie
Norvell Cruz from BHMS, Lauren Crane from St. Michael’s School, and Jenna Cardno from OVMS. Two alternates – Shreya Singh from Turtleback Elementary School and Sofia Benito from BHMS – also attended to compete in the MAGIC Division. The topic at the State Meet was The Global Work Place. “The children had two hours to read a Future Scene about the topic, brainstorm challenges, determine the underlying problem, brainstorm solutions, develop and use criteria to judge the solutions, and write an essay about their best solution,” explained Nancy. The junior team placed sixth out of 26 teams in the written competition, and third for their skit. Sofia’s alternate team was second in the state. Victor’s skit won first. Nancy concluded, “The children went home with a lot of medals, plaques, trophies, and smiles.” ¢

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Cover to Cover
The AAUW Poway-Peñasquitos Branch is hosting its 19th Annual Cover to Cover event on Saturday, May 14. The event will be held at Maderas Golf Club from 9:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards the group’s Tech Trek scholarships for local seventh grade girls and the re-entry scholarships for women returning to school as non-traditional students. Cover to Cover is an authors’ luncheon, and the PowayPeñasquitos Branch expects to see over 200 guests attending. This year’s guest speakers are Tammy Greenwood, author of Two Rivers; Abigail Padgett, author of Child of Silence; and Marivi Solivan, author of The Mango Bride. All three authors live in San Diego. In addition to author talks and book signings, guests can take part in the silent auction, opportunity baskets, and $500 cash drawing. To learn more visit powayarea-ca.aauw.net/events.
Bedside Manners
Stop by PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, starting May 6 for a hilarious comedy of relationships. Bedside Manners centers around a man named Ferris, who’s agreed to look after his sister’s seedy country hotel for a weekend. He doesn’t expect two young couples to arrive for romantic vacations – with each other’s spouses! The simultaneous affairs in the same location lead to a dizzying, humorous web of lies, confusion, and bewilderment, with poor Ferris caught in the middle. Bedside Manners was written by Derek Benfield, is directed by Brent A. Stringfield, and is produced by Chris and Brenda Robinson. Tyler Richards Hewes plays Ferris, Bill Shores plays Roger, Brandon Kaye Thomas plays Sally, Amy Stanley plays Helen, and Tamaz Bolkvadze plays Geoff. The play opens on Friday, May 6 and will run for five weekends, closing Sunday, June 5. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Find tickets and more at www.powpac.org.
Chalk it Up at the Park
The 6 Annual Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s Chalk It Up! sidewalk chalk art event will be bigger and even better than the first five years. Scheduled for Saturday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., it’s a free, fun family event where people of all ages can get creative at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. The RBCC supplies a bucket of chalk to each participant, and artists can take as long as they want to express their artistic abilities on the concrete. Afterwards, chalk buckets are exchanged for a goody bag. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place in each age category, as well as an overall award. Prizes range from $15 to $50 in gift certificates donated by local businesses. Participants can also enjoy free refreshments – coffee from Peet’s Coffee & Tea, water from Albertsons, and cookies from Seacrest Village. Find out more at www.rbcommunitycouncil.com. th

Music at the Rancho Bernardo Library
Rancho Bernardo music lovers have a lot to look forward to with free upcoming performances at the Rancho Bernardo Library. Musicians from the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra’s Soloists Ensemble and Soloists Sinfonietta will perform the next Discovery Concert on Saturday, May 21 at 3 p.m. They’ll share a selection of contrasting styles from the classical repertoire, providing a behind the scenes look at how composers covey stories through music. On Wednesday, May 25 at 6:15 p.m., the West Coast Wind Quintet will present their captivating sound. Wind quintets have a very different sound than string ensembles, and the variety of tone color is sure to mesmerize. The young musicians in the quintet have performed with the San Diego Symphony, LA Philharmonic, and LA Opera. The Highland String Quartet and the Brahms Piano Quintet, with guest Ines Irawati, will be at the library on Wednesday, June 22 at 6:15 p.m. A Ravel Quartet is also expected to be on the program. Find out more at www.friendsoftheranchobernardolibrary.org.
A Magical Musical Journey
Join the Ed Brown Center for Active Adults on May 15 for a musical journey through Latin America. As part of the Sunday Afternoons @ 3:00 program, Francisco Astudillo, Founder and Director of TINKU, will showcase his musical versatility. Francisco made his first bamboo flute at age seven, preheating a nail and using it to burn holes in the bamboo. Thanks to musical instruction in middle school, he was soon playing the guitar, transversal flute, keyboard, and mandolin. Latin folk music has made a large impact on his repertoire, and he’s been influenced by music from Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and more. He plays a variety of instruments – the Zampoña, Quena, Quenacho, Rondador, Toyos, and other South American panpipes. Through his mystical music, he shares diverse cultures with his audiences. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays at the Ed Brown Center, or by calling 858-487-9324.
3rd Annual RBHS Poetry Showcase
The Friends of the Rancho Bernardo High School Library recently sponsored their 3rd Annual RBHS Poetry Showcase. This year’s theme was From Ordinary to Extraordinary, and awarded first, second, and third place prizes to poems in English, Spanish, German, and French. County Supervisor Dave Roberts presented an official County of San Diego proclamation commending the Friends of the Library for their service, leadership, and commitment, welcoming them to the Live Well San Diego partnership. The awards were underwritten by local attorney Keith Greer. The Friends of the RBHS Library is a nonprofit volunteer organization supporting the RBHS Library. The group advocates for funding, fosters technological development, adds to library resources, and raises awareness within the community – as well as recognizing students through programs like the poetry showcase. Get Ready for Red Shoe Day
San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. For more information about Red Shoe Day or to find out how you can help visit www.rmhcsd.org.
Young Soccer Stars Score
San Diego Soccer Club’s Under-8 boys’ team won this year’s State Cup, a welcome achievement for the growing program. “This is the first boys’ team at SDSC to win State Cup,” said Jim Flowers, the team’s coach. The nine young boys easily got through the first round of play, scoring 16 total goals against three teams while only giving up one. “The defining game was the quarterfinals game against Legends,” Coach Flowers explained. “We have been two of the best teams this year. We beat them in Albion Cup, they beat us for United Cup. In this game, we scored in the last minute to win 2-1.” After winning another 2-1 game in the semifinals, they faced off against an Under-9 team in the championship game for a decisive 4-1 victory. “We try very hard to play above our years, and I think it shows on the field,” said Coach Flowers. “They want to play all of the time – at our ceremony after the championship, they were asking when we have our next tournament.”
Spirit of the Fourth
The Rancho Bernardo community is already gearing up for this year’s Fourth of July celebrations, and the Spirit of the Fourth committee is hard at work preparing for another wonderful event. Festivities will take place on July 4 at a number of venues throughout the community, from 7 a.m. through 10 p.m. The Spirit of the Fourth Community Fair at Webb Park will kick off with a pancake breakfast, followed by exciting family events ranging from children’s games and activities to handicrafts, vendor booths, and an array of food and drinks. Enjoy Rancho Bernardo’s Art Walk, the Quilts of Valor, Wheels of Freedom Classic Motor Show, live entertainment, the annual Patriotic Pet contest, the Veteran’s Memorial Service, and more. Stick around for the parade at 3:30 p.m. along the streets of downtown Rancho Bernardo. The day will conclude with evening entertainment and fireworks at Bernardo Heights Middle School. Cynthia Elizondo Halcyon Real Estate Services
“YOUR EXPERT AGENT IN THE POWAY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT!” In 1993, Cynthia Elizondo earned her M.B.A. in International Business. She has used the knowledge she gained to start several successful entrepreneurial endeavors, but her true passion has always lain with real estate. So, when she was presented with the opportunity to follow that dream, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Cynthia began working with Halcyon Real Estate Services so that she could help others achieve their dreams of buying and selling their first home, investment property, or simply take the next step on their journey in real estate. A certified negotiation expert, Cynthia knows exactly what it takes to make a successful deal. When representing buyers, Cynthia takes the time to learn exactly what they are looking for in a home, as well as what price they are comfortable with, in order to match them with their ideal property. When representing sellers, she thinks outside the box to negotiate deals with potential buyers, creating a win-win situation for both parties. Cynthia’s expertise especially lies with the residential areas that make up the Poway Unified School District. Growing up in Northern California, Cynthia ultimately found her dream home here in North County, where she raised two children who attended PUSD schools for over 15 years. Utilizing her familiarity with the school district and all it has to offer, Cynthia is able to provide her clients with an extensive knowledge of various schools. Ultimately, she can help clients find a home within the boundaries of the school best suited for them and their children. Following her belief that volunteerism makes for a strong community, Cynthia serves on the board of directors for the Poway Senior Center and the Poway Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers with Soroptimist International of Poway and Poway Real Estate Professionals. As a devout Catholic, Cynthia is also an active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where her husband serves as a deacon. In addition to English, Cynthia is also fluent in Spanish and French. And if you speak the language of wine, she is always happy to regale you with stories of being raised in the Napa Valley.

resident Vivian Blackstone is proud to release her new film, Journey of a Thousand Meditations: The Life and Work of Edmond Szekely. The biographical film centers around the founder of the health, mind, body movement. Szekely began work in Europe in the early 20th century, then moved to continue his work in Tahiti. He finally created Rancho La Puerta in
Tecate, Mexico, the first health and fitness spa in North America. Szekely emphasized a close relationship with nature for whole-person wellbeing. “He grew his own wheat, made whole grain bread, grew vegetables, and raised goats for fresh milk and cheese,” explained Vivian. “Szekely incorporated ancient ideas, like Sumerian baths, Swiss sun bins, the Toltec ball game, Yoga postures, and, for spiritual food, the Essene Communions.” The film is a 37-minute color documentary including photos, interviews with students and loved ones, and voiceovers of Szekely’s own words. Vivian was born in New York City and graduated from the School of Industrial Art, in addition to taking classes at NYU, New School for Social Research, School of Visual Arts, and Art Students League of New York. She later moved to Los Angeles for a career in graphic design, and discovered her love of film when she moved to San Diego in 1962. That was also when she began working with Edmond Szekely, a mentorship that lasted until 1972. Learn more about Vivian and her work at vivianblackstone.webs.com. ¢

Successful treatment of periodontal disease appears to slow progression of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown an association between periodontal disease and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A new observation study out of Sweden by Dr. Holmlund of Uppsala University breaks ground in showing for the first time that among patients who seek treatment for periodontal disease, treatment responders have on average a 28 percent lower risk of fatal or non-fatal MI, stroke, or heart failure than non-responders. Commonly referred to as gum disease, periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease caused when bacteria in plaque below the gum line leads to swelling, irritation, and possibly receding gums and tooth loss. Periodontal disease has been linked to many chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer. Despite its prevalence, periodontal disease is hardly ever discussed, resulting in a lack of urgency for people to properly care for their gums. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) urges all Americans to “Love the gums you’re with” and take better care of their gums by adopting simple improvements to oral hygiene. To aid in the prevention of periodontal disease, the AAP recommends brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and discussing periodontal health with a dental professional.

ow many of us would love to visit the gym regularly but just can’t find the time? Whether our little ones need to be shuttled to and from their soccer practices or our boss needs us to entertain clients after work, it’s difficult committing to an exercise regime when our lives are so busy. That’s why the “9Round 30 Minutes Kickbox Fitness” concept is so ideal. With new locations that just opened in February 2016 in Rancho Bernardo and Torrey Highlands, both venues offer full-body workouts in just 30 minutes, complete with a complimentary personal trainer and nutrition coach. The “WE KNOW HOW best part is that you’re not TO CHALLENGE MEMBERS TO PUSH required to adhere to THEIR LIMITS, AND a specific time-frame. HAVE A FUN – ALBEIT Kristin Clover, owner/ SWEATY – TIME manager of the Rancho Bernardo location, DOING IT!” explained, “The 9Round – Brad Unnasch model centers around the needs of its members, catering to that critical element in everyone’s life: time. There are no class times, so members work out on their schedules, not ours.” Brad Unnasch, owner/manager of the Torrey Highlands location, emphasized that even though the exercise session is short, it is still highly effective. He shared, “Using

kickboxing equipment and moves to work the entire body, members get to do aerobic and anaerobic work, cardio, muscle toning, and lots of core in every workout. We know how to challenge members to push their limits, and have a fun – albeit sweaty – time doing it!” The business idea was first conceived of in 2007 by the International Kickboxing Federation Light Middleweight World Champion, Shannon Hudson. His business has since grown to 350 locations internationally. In 2016, 9Round was even named one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 500 Franchises. These two new franchise locations are already endearing themselves to their neighborhoods. For example, 9Round has graciously sponsored the RB High School PTA, the Miss Poway Pageant, the Willow Grove Educational Foundation, the Guns and Hoses Golf Tournament, and Westview’s Grad Night. Brad stated, “We are always looking into avenues to becoming involved in the communities.” If you’re interested in trying out 9Round but you’ve never stepped foot into a gym before, Kristin said, “The first time through a workout can be challenging, but after a few sessions, the body adapts quickly and improvements can be very dramatic. Those transformations are awesome to be part of!” Brad added, “Our mission is to help members achieve their fitness goals, no matter what those goals are.” ¢

E
lite Pediatric Dentistry was the first pediatric dental practice in 4S Ranch and has been providing dental care to children in the community for over three years now. Under the care of Dr. Femme Ambrosio and her team, the practice strives to provide extraordinary care for every patient, every day. “The practice has grown considerably since I first started,” said Dr. Ambrosio. “Our team is committed to improving, maintaining, and growing ourselves for the benefit of the children we see.” According to Dr. Ambrosio, a board certified pediatric dentist, having a boutique practice allows her the time necessary to ensure that children and parents have a positive experience and the best possible care. The office encourages open communication and takes the time to explain preventions plans, treatment and procedure options and
finances. Dr. Ambrosio understands that each child is unique and must be treated as such. “These visits can be overwhelming and we hope that getting to know each child individually will help in their overall care.” It is the friendly and compassionate team at Elite Pediatric Dentistry that truly sets the practice apart. Dr. Ambrosio has worked in various pediatric dental offices throughout the country and learned a great deal from each experience. When she decided to open her own practice, she and her team not only had the knowledge but also the skill set and personality to provide for their patients. “From the moment a parent calls to schedule an appointment to the time a family walks out the door they are treated with care,” said Dr. Ambrosio. Dr. Ambrosio is a native San Diegan, wife, and mother, all of which she feels serve her well in her practice. Dr. Ambrosio is a mother to Bennett 6), Amelie (4) and Camdyn (2). “It has always been a goal of mine to not only support

oms aking Six Figures
by KARA LYNCH GUTHRIE
G
rowing up in San Diego, I was raised in a family of athletes. My dad had a stint in the NFL, my brothers played in the NFL and MLB, and my mom is an avid golfer. Me, I grew up playing competitive soccer. I love the teamwork, leadership, and competition of sports; it’s in my blood. In college, it was my dream to become a TV anchor but there was something about having to leave San Diego and relocate to a very small town that was not so intriguing. I majored in Communications at USC and was introduced to an opportunity to minor in Sports Journalism. Post-college, I dove into the media industry and ultimately ended up working with the NFL and MLB among other media outlets. Twenty-one years into a successful career, things changed. In what seemed

just a blink of an eye, my sons were six and eight and I realized how much of their lives I had missed. So, seven years ago, I took almost a year to evaluate my life and focus on my “little athletes.” That time confirmed what I had suspected; I needed them just as much as they needed me. Knowing that my family needed my income but also that I couldn’t go back to a corporate job, I strived to find something that would allow me to balance my personal and professional lives. Shortly after beginning my search, I had coffee with a long-time family friend, Heidi Bartolotta, who introduced me to Moms Making Six Figures. That was almost five years ago, and since then I have been able to design my new career around my sons’ very busy school and sports schedules. From
picking them up from school every day and shuttling them off to practices and then back home, I have truly been able to be there for them. This is so important because soon I will blink again – and they will be off to college. “Moms” is a marketing company that represents a U.S.-based manufacturer. Though based in San Diego, many of the 100-plus women who work with Moms live all over the United States. Of these women, about half work 25-plus hours per week. Their only qualifications are that they’re selfmotivated, hard-working, and coachable. Kara invites interested women to reach out through www.momsmakingsixfigures.com. “Learn a little more about who we are and what we do. We would love to help bring you home too!” ¢

Finishing Strong
W
ith the end of the school year drawing to a close, Broncos are celebrating their accomplishments of the past nine months. After months of applications, interviews, and final decisions, seniors are finally committing to their schools of choice. A plethora of school events – both new and old – are signaling the end of a rewarding and dynamic school year. Old traditions live on. Ten senior males vied for the title of Mr. Bronco last month in RB High’s comical male scholarship pageant. They displayed humorous talents that ran the gamut from refined to outlandish. In the end, Kenneth Rayburn took the main title
and $500 cash prize. Secondary titles were awarded to Kaivan Mohsenzadeh for Mr. Congeniality and Raymond Velazquez, who took the People’s Choice award. “My peers and I just wanted to have fun while putting on a great show which is what Mr. Bronco and senior year is all about,” Rayburn said. The audience was also the first to find out that RB High’s prom will be held at CSU San Marcos, this year with a theme of “The Roaring 20s.” Others are ending their year with something new. RB High’s first TEDx conference was hosted last month, organized by senior Salwa Khan, biology teacher Lori
Brickley, and a team of dedicated student volunteers. The conference shared insight on everything from education reform to beatboxing through its lineup of 10 speakers. It lived up to the theme of “Ignited Minds.” The journey of the 2015-2016 school year is almost over, and the result is one that all Broncos can take pride in. From football championships to outstanding college acceptances and everything in between, there is something for everyone. ¢

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD
THE PERFECT
PICNIC
Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL
W
hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.
LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org
MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us

OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the Mission church which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org
