I

t will come as no surprise – for people that know me and people that regularly read my letters – that I love our team here at ZCode Magazines. Find the hearts, I am lucky enough to work with a fantastic group WIN COOL STUFF! of driven and talented professionals that put See page 8 their hearts and souls into creating our local community magazines. Whether it’s editorial, graphics, production, or sales, every member of the ZCode Team has a direct influence on the pages of each and every magazine. Starting with this issue, we have created a fun way to share that love and spirit put into each and every issue. We call it the Hidden Heart Campaign. Simply put, we want to give stuff away! But there’s a catch. We’ve hidden hearts in several advertisements throughout this issue. Your job is to flip through the pages and locate the specific advertisements that contain a ZCode Hidden Heart (see example on the right). Once you’ve found all of the hearts, simply email us your list specifying which advertisements contain the ZCode Hidden Hearts and you’ll Derrick Breaux instantly qualify for a chance to win some very cool Publisher stuff – from gift cards to t-shirts and more. Teaching Tranquility

92128 RESIDENT’S BOOK HELPS TEACHERS COPE WITH STRESS photo by Erika Thornes

L

ocal educator, blogger, and speaker Dan Tricarico has published The Zen Teacher: Creating Focus, Simplicity, and Tranquility in the Classroom, an introductory handbook that shows teachers how to cope with stress by using mindfulness strategies such as breathing, meditation, present moment awareness, non-judgment, compassion, gratitude, stillness, and selfcare. The book also includes a number of assignments that give teachers practical applications for the concepts covered in each chapter. Tired of seeing great teachers burn out, melt down, and leave the profession altogether as a result of the increasingly demanding expectations placed on them, Dan started a blog called The Zen Teacher to document his own journey toward eliminating stress and creating more peace in the classroom. The blog received such a powerful response that Dan thought a book

form might be even more helpful. Referred to as “a warrior for teacher well-being” by publisher Dave Burgess, Dan writes in the introduction, “I am devoted to showing teachers how to maintain a sense of focus, simplicity, and tranquility in the face of the obstacles and problems the modern American educator encounters daily. I want to show them that they can not just survive, but thrive in the classroom.” Dan has been an English teacher at West Hills High School in San Diego for over 20 years. “I’ve always loved writing and when I realized that I could combine that love of writing with helping teachers, I knew I’d found a new calling,” he said. He is now presenting Zen Teacher workshops throughout the country and has recently appeared as a guest on a number of podcasts. He has lived in Sabre Springs with his family for 12 years. TRULY INSPIRATIONAL Jamie Harris Refuses to Let Crohn’s Disease Get in the Way of Her Dreams

Jamie Nangpi Harris Stay-at-Home Mom/Substitute Teacher Carmel Mountain Ranch since 2013 Traveling the world (31 countries and counting!), dance, dressing up our Goldendoodle Teddy, going to the farmer’s market, exploring San Diego, trying new restaurants, hanging out with family and friends Mostra Coffee, Quartyard Dog Park

16 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • August | September 2016

fter she was diagnosed seven years ago with Crohn’s Disease, an autoimmune disorder that is recognized by an overactive immune response leading to chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, Jamie Harris’s life has been greatly altered. “The biggest challenge has been receiving my infusion treatments at the UCSD John Moore’s Cancer Center every six weeks,” said Jamie. “Not only is it physically and emotionally draining, each treatment takes about four hours and is not a cure for the disease.” But Jamie has not only learned to live with the disease, she has learned to take control of her health, becoming her own advocate as a patient and for others affected by the disease. Jamie was born and raised in San Diego and has lived in PQ her whole life. “I met my husband when we were eight years old,” recalled Jamie. “We grew up together and went to elementary, middle, and high school together.” Jamie and her husband Nick reconnected after college and married in 2012. “We knew we wanted to raise our family in the same community,” shared Jamie. “We love the school district and the convenience of being around everything.” Shortly into their newlywed life, the couple was told by doctors that they only had a 10 percent chance of conceiving; but, despite the odds, Jamie and Nick were able to get pregnant. “Our miracle daughter was born a little after midnight on Christmas Day in 2015,” gushed Jamie. Before her job as a stay-at-home mom, Jamie worked as a teacher – first at her alma mater, Mt. Carmel High School, and later at Stone Ranch and Midland Elementary School. Today, Jamie lends a lot of her time to Take Steps, a fundraising event for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America that supports the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) community. “I wasn’t going to let this disease ruin my life and wanted others who were suffering to know they were not alone,” said Jamie. “Take Steps empowers patients and provides a safe and welcoming environment to connect and inspire one another.” This year, Jamie was named Honored Hero for Take Steps. “It was an amazing experience!” she exclaimed about receiving the honor. “I feel like I got to tell people my story and the long and rough journey of this disease. It was a great opportunity to spread awareness from a patient’s point of view.” In her free time, Jamie loves to travel; she has been to 31 countries and has no plans of slowing down. She was recently named Mrs. Philippines CA USA at the 15th Annual Philippine Independence Grand Ball, hosted by the National Asian American Coalition. “I have fulfilled my dream of becoming a teacher, wife, and mother and did not let this disease run my life,” stated Jamie. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is to never let go of your dreams and to be strong.” 

he Cote parents – Mark, a chief systems engineer, and April, a stay-at-home mom – hail from Maine, and first met each other in 1994 at a mutual friend’s Memorial Day party. Fast forward to the present, and the Cotes now have two children – Summer, 8, and Cooper, 6 – and will be celebrating 19 years of marriage in August. Though they moved into their Sabre Springs Highlands community just a few days before the Cedar fire in October of 2003, they have no regrets about transplanting into the sunny SoCal lifestyle.

April admitted, “We haven’t shoveled any snow or swatted a mosquito since our move, though we try to visit family every year to reconnect and to remind ourselves of how lucky we are to be living in San Diego – especially in the winter months, when it’s typically 60 degrees warmer in San Diego!” Ardent sports enthusiasts no matter where they live, Mark added jokingly, “It is possible to simultaneously be Red Sox and Padres fans as well as Patriots and Chargers fans!” Taking advantage of everything San Diego offers, the Cotes regularly visit Legoland, Balboa Park, and the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. The Cotes also swim in their pool year-round, and can be found riding their bikes or running around Miramar Lake. Mark and April have even completed half marathons and 5Ks at various local races. Extracurricular activities keep the Cote children happily engaged. Summer, who will be a fourth grader at Creekside Elementary, plays softball on the Scripps Ranch Softball League, and made its All-Star team. She also does an afterschool robotics program and studies piano. Cooper, who will be a second grader at Creekside, plays baseball for the Carmel Mountain Ranch Little League, and does flag football for the Westview Wolverine Youth team. Immersing themselves in their children’s pursuits is paramount to the parents. Mark is the team manager/head coach for Cooper’s baseball teams, and the assistant coach for Summer’s softball teams. April is the co-room mom for both of her children’s classes, volunteers at Creekside weekly, and is a PTA board member. April emphasized, “We wanted to move into a neighborhood that had good schools, and in Sabre Springs we love how everything is so close: school, parks, and shopping.” So be on the lookout for this active family as they soak up the fun not just in Sabre Springs, but all of San Diego! 

he San Diego Soccer Club (SDSC) partnered with the Karina’s Joy Foundation to host their 4th Annual 5K family fun run at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. The event was the largest to date, raising over $12,000 with 350 participants. The SDSC You’ll Never Walk Alone 5K was founded in 2013 by Coach Mark Connelly to raise money for families in need within the soccer club. Beginning last year, the race is now dedicated to the memory of Karina Fares, 12-year-old SDSC member who lost her life in a tragic accident on a soccer field in February 2015. The Karina’s Joy Foundation was created in her memory, and a portion of the race proceeds helps the foundation provide youth camp scholarships for local kids in need. of caramel. DIRECTIONS 1. 2.

3.

Make cake mix as directed on box. As soon as it comes out of the oven make holes in the cake. Pour caramel over the top of the cake so that the caramel gets down in the holes. Cover the whole surface of the baked cake. Let cool. I would put in fridge for about 1 hour. Again, make sure cake is 100 percent cool. This will make a nice caramel glaze on top. Layer Cool Whip on top, then sprinkle toffee chips over the top of the cake and serve. Store in fridge!

ABOUT THE CHEF: My name is Melissa. I’ve lived here in the area for over 30 years, first in Rancho Peñasquitos and now in Rancho Bernardo. I’ve worked for Poway Unified for 16 years and teach Zumba. I’m a proud mom of a one-year-old who keeps my husband and me on our toes. ¢

Madison Nicole Ix (12) Bernardo Heights Middle School 6 Joe and Nicole Ix Heidi Ix (9) Stir Fresh and the Rancho Bernardo Library

ccording to 12-year-old Madison Ix, her love of volunteering began in elementary school. In fact, volunteering became such a large part of her life that she received the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council’s Youth Community Service Award. Her latest volunteer project took place right here in her new home of Rancho Bernardo. “I moved to the Trails about a year ago, and recently planned and led Trails Fruit Donation Day. Working with Crop-Swap, I organized a

day where my friends and family went around and gleaned fruit in the neighborhood. We were able to pick 5,000 pounds of fruit thanks to the generosity of the neighbors,” revealed Madison, who attends Bernardo Heights Middle School. When the Feeding America truck came to pick up the 15,000 servings of fruit to be given to those in need in San Diego County, Madison was filled with emotion, knowing that she and her neighbors were helping the local community. Madison is also passionate about dance. She began dancing when she was three years old after seeing a ballet production. “My parents took me to see the Nutcracker, and it was a very inspirational moment for me. After begging my parents, I started taking classes at my preschool, and a year later, I started dancing at Scripps Performing Arts Academy,” related Madison. She has been training there ever since and has performed in seven Nutcracker productions with the studio. Hiking, swimming, crafting, and spending time with her friends and family are also among Madison’s favorite pastimes. In addition, she is a voracious reader who is working her way through all the books in the Rancho Bernardo Library’s teen section. At Bernardo Heights Middle School, Madison looks forward to attending all of her classes, but is especially fond of math and science. “I really like math and science because there is so much to explore and learn,” said Madison. In looking to the future, Madison hopes to attend a great university and become a neuroscientist, teacher, doctor, politician, or astronaut. “In any of these fields, I would like to cure cancer, study dreams, inspire students, learn about new life forms on other planets, or become a senator,” stated Madison, who cites Sally Ride as someone who inspires her to achieve her dreams. 

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

RB VOLUNTEER NANCY MYLES NURTURES FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVERS by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Spark Photography

B

efore moving to San Diego in 2000, Nancy Myles was a teacher in Glenview, IL. She taught a Young Scholars Program, providing enrichment for GATE students in first through eighth grade. “When I accepted that position,” Nancy explained, “the superintendent told me I could do anything to challenge the students, but I must include Future Problem Solving at the middle school.” She was welcomed as a volunteer at Turtleback Elementary, and for the past 16 years has been working with third, fourth, and fifth grade GATE students. Future Problem Solving is an international program that fosters critical thinking skills. Using topics such as propaganda, enhancing human potential, intellectual property, recovering from natural disasters, and the global workplace, participants are given a ‘Qualifying Problem’ each year to try and solve. Teams of four have two hours to write 16 challenges, an underlying problem, 16 solutions, five criteria, and a fully developed essay. Two hours only! Qualifying booklets go to the State Bowl, and from there winning teams go on to the Internationals. “Many of my fifth grade students love this program so much that they continue to participate in it until they graduate high school!” Nancy smiled. “It is such an honor for me to be the coach of my Turtleback students and all of my Turtleback alums!” Future Problem Solving is not Nancy’s only program at Turtleback – she loves to provide children with learning experiences that extend their thinking skills. Some of her units include big business, law, mysteries, and conflict. Students put on trials, play the Stock Market Game, and study Hamlet. Nancy leads them within the classroom and without, also directing many Broadway musicals there. Outside of school, Nancy is busy walking five miles a day, sewing five hexagons a day on her quilts, golfing, and traveling, but also is very involved in getting her book series, Rondi’s Virtual Adventures, onto Amazon. Rondi is a 10-year-old girl whose adventures abound when she tests a gaming system that takes her to a virtual world. For third to sixth grade readers, Nancy would love to get Rondi’s journeys into cyberspace. All of her contributions to the students in the RB area are why Nancy Myles is spotlighted as our 92128 volunteer. “My goal is to make the most challenging projects fun and exciting,” she shared, “as well as to provide an environment where the children feel safe in taking risks.”  Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Family: Hobbies & Interests:

COMMUNITY STUFF

Webb Lake Saved Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) President and local resident Scott Lawn has succeeded in his efforts to save Webb Lake. In early 2015, business owners surrounding Webb Park decided there was no other option but to fill in the lake and remove the surrounding grass due to California’s severe draught. But Scott, a water and irrigation expert, had another idea. Along with a number of community members, he started the Save Webb Lake fundraising campaign to drill a well to fill the lake. They raised $100,000 in less than a year thanks to overwhelming support from many local organizations, residents, and government officials. On Monday, June 13, Fain Drilling and Pump Co. hit water at only 405 feet at a rate of over 200 gallons per minute – more than the park and lake will need for years to come. Webb Lake will continue to be central in the Rancho Bernardo community as a popular destination for weddings, picnics, and other community events.

Local Student Wins Don Diego Award The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation has awarded $40,500 to outstanding students embarking on their studies this fall. Eligibility for the annual awards was open to local high school seniors who have participated in the San Diego County Fair or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds. 92128 resident Ryan Berardelli was among the 12 recipients. Ryan won a $5,000 scholarship from the foundation in the Exhibitor category. Ryan exhibits a wealth of intellectualism, drive, and real-world experiences from robotics to jewelry-making. He is also an Eagle Scout and a successful entrepreneur with a thriving photography business. Homeschooled in San Diego, Ryan has conquered demanding subjects such as Latin and higher math while pursuing college-level coursework. Poway High School robotics instructor and Boy Scout leader Rodger Matthew Dohm said, “Ryan is self-motivated and motivates others through his determination to see things through.” Ryan plans to attend California Baptist University in the fall, where he will major in mechanical engineering. Undefeated Little League Season

The Rancho Bernardo Little League (RBLL) Braves baseball team has had a perfect season this year. The Braves won all 20 regular season games – a remarkable feat considering no other team has gone undefeated during the regular season for at least the last seven years. The team then went on to win the championship for the Minors division, losing only one game during the playoffs, making their final record an impressive 23-1. The Braves are led by head coach Ruben Lopez and assistant coaches Matt Andre, Ty Reed, and Oscar Lopez. Team members are ages 9 to 11 and include Justin Lopez, Topher Bayne, Michael Hernandez, Jack Engblom, Joseph Betz, Adrian Pena, Nick Reed, Matthew Andre, Junior Gonzales, and Charile Armes. Since its founding in 1939, Little League has instilled leadership, character, courage, and loyalty in all that participate. Little League can be found in more than 80 countries worldwide with more than 2.4 million children participating each year. RBHS Students Win Art Scholarships Two Rancho Bernardo High School students were among eight recipients of North County Society of Fine Arts (NCSFA) scholarships. Each year NCSFA awards scholarships to high school seniors who plan to pursue degrees in the visual arts. Julie Kim intends to specialize in fine art and illustration at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago this fall. Her longtime career goal is to become an art professor. She is actively involved in a professional art studio and is devoted to art and the development of her skills. Larz Vahamaki plans to major in graphic design, illustration, and industrial design at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago as well. His long-term goal is to earn a B.F.A., and to eventually develop an in-house design team. His art portfolio has been selected as the most outstanding in the AP class. He is dedicated to further developing his art skills and is excited about the future. Learn more at www.ncsfa.org.

Local Wins Homemade Wine Competition

6th Annual Chalk It Up Winners

92128 resident Julio Troche and friend Michael Perrone won awards in the San Diego County Fair’s Homemade Wine Competition. The duo’s inaugural Syrah earned a gold medal in the red wine division while their Merlot-Syrah received a gold medal in the blended red wine division and Best in Class honors. “I grew up helping my dad and grandfather make wine. After my grandfather passed in 2011, I wanted to continue the tradition and try my hand at making wine,” shared Michael. Julio added, “Wine-making is a combination of science, art, and luck. If all go your way, you end up with a great wine. It looks like we had all three factors on our side for the competition.” Michael and Julio started an exclusive wine club and in 2014 they expanded their wine production to more than 600 bottles. When they are not making wine, Michael is the director of logistics for the U.S. Navy and Julio is the principal of Landscape Solutions Warehouse.

Despite the sweltering heat, the Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s 6th Annual Chalk It Up event was a success. The RB Community Council was especially appreciative that local artist Dr. Sabine LawlessReljic volunteered to be a judge this year. Kaydence Gordan won first place, Navitha Iaskadali won second, and Alaiya Little won third in the preschool category. Elizabeth Milledge won first, Namratha Iaskadali won second, and Sage Marine won third in the elementary school category. Hunter Trieu won first, Aayushi Chaudhry won second, and Lauren Mascardo won third in the middle school category. Gracie Horne won first, Ishwinder Battoo won second, and Sierra Sands won third in the high school category. Nina Mascardo won first, Nyrmla Battoo won second, and Harpreet Battoo won third in the adult category. Bryan Pederson won first and Sandy Mill won second in the seniors category. Gracie Horne won the overall award as well. This free, community-wide event allowed people of all ages to express their artistic skills with chalk. Learn more at www.rbcommunitycouncil.com.

Innovative Program Tested at Highland Ranch Google brought its new Expeditions Pioneer Program to a classroom at Highland Ranch Elementary School, which allowed students to take virtual expeditions to exotic locations like the solar system, Antarctica, and the Congo. Since launching the program in September 2015, the company has been accepting requests to pilot the technology in their classrooms this year, and third grade teacher Lauren Pfannenstiel was among those accepted. Using Google’s Cardboard, a simple viewing device made out of folded cardboard with an Android phone, students can experience a virtual excursion as an immersive, three-dimensional event. Reminiscent of the old stereoscopic View-Master devices introduced by Mattel in the late ‘30s, Google Cardboard turns a smart phone into a cutting-edge, virtual-reality viewer that gives an added dimension to virtual field trips. The program has created more than 150 engaging journeys around the world, making it easy to immerse students in entirely new experiences. Mathnasium’s One-On-One Approach Gets Results and Builds Confidence for Grades K-12 by LAINEY KRAL | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

Mathnasium, everyday victories are just as important as the big tests. From homework assistance to test preparation, it’s about building on the fundamentals to meet new challenges. “We aim to look at the possible gaps in the math knowledge of the child and fill them in with what is necessary to keep up, catch up, or get ahead at a certain pace that is right for them,” explained Center Director Lucille Capule. “We open our ears to our students and to their

continuous and ongoing as we try our best to improve our system and manner of teaching,” said Lucille. All instructors are either graduates or college-level, specializing in mathematics and trained in the Mathnasium Method. The results are undeniable, and students thrive as their confidence grows. “Our son was a reluctant participant in Mathnasium,” admitted Deborah, a local parent. “Although he is very intelligent, some basics of math fundamentals were creating difficulty for him as he entered middle school. Mathnasium is helping to eliminate the ‘math phobia’ that our son has experienced in the past. This ability to understand math concepts and be successful in math as he proceeds through his education will certainly open many doors that a fear of math could close.” Laura, another local parent, added, “Nicholas’s confidence in math has grown so much over the past six months. He is getting good grades in math at school, and I believe he really understands the math concepts he is learning. The tutors are very patient and fun, and he enjoys going to Mathnasium in the afternoons.” Call today for a free trial, and let Mathnasium guide your student from frustration to a new foundation for success. ¢

On the eve of Girl Scouting’s 100th year in San Diego, we spoke with representatives from Rancho Bernardo Service Unit about the learning and leadership opportunities available for local girls. With over 900 youth and adult members in 92128, the service unit and troops fosters both independence and teamwork. It’s a girl-led movement, where Ambassadors and Seniors teach and inspire Daisies and Brownies. From camping and crafting to cookie sales and community service, read along to see how this worldwide movement is making a difference right here in Rancho Bernardo.

Rancho Bernardo Service Unit Q&A CAN YOU GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF GIRL SCOUTS? Mary Doyle, Girl Scouts San Diego Director of Communications: The preeminent leadership development organization for girls was founded in 1912, when women in the United States couldn’t yet vote. Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, GA gathered 18 girls together to share what she had learned abroad about a new outdoor and educational program for youth. This nearly deaf 51-yearold sparked a worldwide movement inspiring girls to embrace their individuality, strength, and intellect. She envisioned an organization that would prepare girls to meet their world with courage, confidence, and character. Juliette and that first Girl Scout troop blazed trails, redefining what was possible for themselves and for girls everywhere.

celebrate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Girl Scouting in San Diego. Headquartered in Balboa Park, Girl Scouts San Diego provides activities for 35,000 girl and adult members, trains volunteers, and maintains program and service facilities in Escondido and Carlsbad, as well as two camps near Julian. More than 900 girl and adult residents of 92128 are Girl Scout members. WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE RANCHO BERNARDO SERVICE UNIT? WHEN WAS IT STARTED? Sunny Jerome, Co-Service Unit Manager: The Rancho Bernardo Service Unit (RBSU) began in 1988, when the Rancho Verde Service Unit split into two service units, RBSU and Blue Sky (which is Poway). RBSU includes troops from RB, 4S Ranch, and St. Michael’s School.

I help plan the calendar for the year and make sure that troops sign up to help run the events. I also provide help and guidance along the way. I am now moving into the role as Older Girl Mentor to help troop leaders with older girls. Pauline Tetlow, Co-Service Unit Manager: Co-service unit manager. This is the start of my second year in this role. I have served on the service unit team for three years now. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF YOUR ROLE? Sunny: I enjoy seeing the girls try new things and find their passion. I also enjoy helping girls and leaders become connected to a Girl Scout service unit community. Our service unit offers badge workshops, service projects, and volunteer opportunities

C O V E R F E AT U R E for girls so they can find out what areas they have of interest. Pauline: I love being able to support the other troop leaders. It’s satisfying knowing that you can help more than your own troop. WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR BECOMING INVOLVED WITH GIRL SCOUTS? Sunny: I was a Girl Scout and have very fond memories. I once went to school sick because I didn’t want to miss my Girl Scout meeting, but I threw up and was sent home and missed it anyways. I think Girl Scouts teaches girls how to be independent. One of my favorite memories is a girl telling me that she loved using the ax (to make kindling) and lighting the fires because her parents would never let her do this at home. I told her mom and then she made a point of letting her kids do the work and become more independent. Pauline: My daughter said Girl Scouts sounded like fun, and my

friend encouraged me to lead the group as I’m a teacher. I like the opportunity to teach my own daughters about character and community with their friends, so they learn how much a team can accomplish.

Kickoff, Leader Daughter Event, Daisy Days, World Thinking Day, Encampment, and Older Girl Campout.

WHAT IS THE OVERALL MISSION OF GIRL SCOUTS? Mary: The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Juliette Gordon Low believed in the power of every girl and helping her discover her strengths, passions, and talents. Through Girl Scouting, girls gain practical life skills, develop positive values, and learn to serve their communities. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EXCITING PLANS THIS YEAR FOR RBSU GIRL SCOUTS? Sunny: Our service unit provides annual events for the girls to participate in, including He and Me, Brownie Overnight, Brownie Spectacular, GS Caroling, Cookie

Pauline: My hope is to encourage a stronger sense of community between the troops in our area by holding more joint troop events and service unit-wide service opportunities. I think making older girls more visible to the younger girls can foster a sense of community, and continuity will keep the older girls in Scouts and inspire the younger scouts. Over the summer, we want to compile an online database of useful planning guides and templates for running events to make it less intimidating to host workshops or encampments. We hope to continue hosting all the fun yearly events, as well as adding activities specifically geared to older girls to keep their involvement in Girl Scouts strong. WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION FOR A GIRL TO BECOME PART OF A TROOP? Sunny: Girls join a troop because they want to be with other girls that want to also be in Girl Scouts. They

In Her Words

“I always love it when we go camping, and I absolutely love it when we do community service. There was this one time when we made and donated tied blankets to Catholic Charities, and we also donated supplies to a preschool in a homeless shelter. Doing that made me feel really good inside. Selling cookies is also really awesome. My troop also recently received our religious award, called I Live My Faith. That was a really amazing experience.” – Emily Entwistle, Junior, Troop 2856 “I’ve learned in Girl Scouts how to make time for things I care about, like how my troop and I have planned multiple encampments for younger girls; how to take care of the earth; and how to be a good leader and role model for others. By selling cookies, I’ve learned how to talk to people, salesmanship, and facing rejection. I know how to make people aware of certain issues, such as children with hair loss, toiletries for homeless women, and pets needing to be adopted.” – Celeste Jerome, Cadette, Troop 8804 “I really like going to Girl Scout workshops. We play games and make things, and had a lock-in where we stayed up until 11 at night. We made SWAPS and went out to the parking lot at night to play games. My troop did a hike for leaders and daughters, and rock climbing for dads and moms and their kids. We just did Daisy Days for the younger girls, and we taught them how to make a worm composting bin. They thought it was kind of gross to touch the worms, but it was a lot of fun singing songs with them. They liked making SWAPS.” – Anna Tetlow, Brownie, Troop 2184 “We have seven girls in our troop. Four of us, including me, have been in the troop since first grade. My mom is the leader. I learned through Girl Scouts that it is good to keep our environment clean, and that you should leave a place better than you found it. Also, that each Girl Scout is our sister, and we should extend our sisterhood to all girls.” – Lauren Mascardo, Junior (bridging to Cadette), Troop 8857 “I’ve learned how to keep people safe when camping – wear long sleeves and pants to avoid getting poison ivy. My favorite memories are sleeping overnight on the Midway under a plane, giving to Ava’s Angels and the Humane Society, and selling cookies, because you get to eat them and earn money!” – Carrye Bramble, Brownie, Troop 2187

Favorite Girl Scouting Memory: When my girls did the reinvestiture ceremony at the beginning of the school year. We read a poem out loud, each saying two lines while we wrapped a string around our hand and passed the ball of string around the group. When we finished, we were all linked together in a circle. We then cut the string into pieces for each of us to keep, and used them to frame a group picture.

Other programs we’ve supported include I Love A Clean San Diego, Feeding America, San Diego Humane Society, and YWCA’s Becky’s House, a domestic violence program. We’ve also spoken out to local troops about anti-bullying. ARE THERE ANY ANNUAL OR UPCOMING EVENTS IN WHICH RBSU TAKES PART? Sunny: Spirit of the Fourth Parade in RB, Wreaths Across America, and flag raising at the San Diego County Fair. Pauline: We always participate in the Spirit of the Fourth parade, and we are always on the lookout for opportunities to join in community events.

DOES THE RANCHO BERNARDO SERVICE UNIT NEED VOLUNTEERS? Sunny: Yes, we are always looking for volunteers. Go to www.sdgirlscoust.org and click on ‘volunteer.’ Pauline: New leaders are always welcome. There are often girls looking for leaders to form troops. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE WISH FOR THE SERVICE UNIT THIS YEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Sunny: More time. Between school, sports, and family, everyone seems to be too busy. It’s nice to see girls give back to their community and spend time in nature. Pauline: We have a great team of women who really care about reaching beyond their own troops to help the Girl Scouts community. My wish would be to find other caring parents to join the team and continue to support all girls.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE GIRL SCOUTS IN FIVE WORDS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? Sunny: Making the world a better place – ok, six words! Pauline: Fun, community, rewarding, team spirit, and friendship. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD? Sunny: I really like that girls can sign up for workshops, camps, and training by themselves or with their troop. My entire troop does not want to go backpacking, but my daughter really wanted to try it. We signed up and she completed the training and trip. She loved it and met more friends who enjoy doing the same things that she enjoys. She is now signing up for one of the advanced backpacking trips, which lasts a week, and has some friends who she will see there. She’s also going to mentor girls in the training classes and basic backpacking trip. I love how it’s girl-led. She’s going from the trainee to the trainer. This is why I love Girl Scouts. ¢

oms aking Six Figures Change. It’s hard, but w it.

S

ometimes it’s hard to admit we need to make a change. My story is probably one many moms can relate to. My husband and I struggled to conceive for years, so to fill the void, I decided I would put all of my time and energy into climbing the corporate ladder. Along the way, we finally welcomed our first child. By that point, I had put so much into my career that I was convinced I could do both – be a super mom and a powerhouse businesswoman. At age 30, I was running an international supply chain organization and gave birth to our second daughter. This time it was a little different: not just caring for two children, but our second daughter was born with significant health issues. I was torn between a career I loved and a child who needed me more. Naturally, my priority was tending to my daughter’s medical needs, so I stepped out of the corporate world for nine months. During those nine months, she made great strides, and just as I was starting to contemplate what was next for me, a job offer fell in my lap. I leaped at the opportunity, but within seven short months, I found myself traveling domestically and internationally far more than I had anticipated and was missing my kids like crazy. It was then that I realized just how precious those nine months at home with my girls were, and I knew I needed to somehow find a balance between my work and home lives. My husband and I thought that maybe owning our own business would give us the time and freedom I was desperate to have. A new shopping center was opening in a promising area near our

home with multiple franchise opportunities available, so we thought we had found our answer. My husband and I were going to spend our life savings and take out a second mortgage to get it started. A month before I was to fly to the franchise’s headquarters to sign the paperwork and be trained to run the business, I met Heidi Bartolotta, founder of Moms Making Six Figures. My husband and I refer to Heidi as the woman who changed everything for our family. Heidi founded a local marketing and advertising company for women with one common goal: coming home to their families while still being able to earn a significant income. I was skeptical (to say the least) but after weighing my options – continuing to work for a company I wasn’t happy at or sinking over $100,000 into a franchise – I didn’t have a lot to lose by simply giving the Moms team a chance. I worked with Moms for a year part-time while still grinding it out at work. After that year though, I was able to quit my full-time job and within two years replace my corporate salary. Looking back, it was the change I desperately needed, as I now have the time I need to be a more patient mom and wife. Don’t get me wrong, realizing that a change was necessary and then actually making it was very scary, but I would do it all over again to “own my schedule” the way I do now. I have never missed a class party or field trip, and I know those are the things my children will remember. What I’ve realized is that with the right tools and people to support and guide you, anyone can successfully make the same change I did. Visit us at www.momsmakingsixfigures.com. ¢

resident and community leader Robin Kaufman was recently recognized with a proclamation declaring June 21, 2016 to be Robin Kaufman Day. “I was so pleased and honored that the City of San Diego contacted me back in February, wanting to name April 5 Robin Kaufman Day,” shared Robin. “As time got closer, I had to unfortunately reschedule it as I was dealing with several family matters. Councilman Kersey’s office offered June 21 instead. I was extremely honored and proud that they would not only offer it once to me, but make arrangements to offer it again!” Robin and Spencer, one of her pet therapy dogs, attended the ceremony to receive the proclamation from Councilman Kersey. The proclamation included a long list of Robin’s accomplishments over her years in the local community, including involvement with the Rancho Bernardo Community Council, Rancho Bernardo

Planning Board, and Rancho Bernardo Recreation Council. She has also been involved with the Hats Off to Volunteers committee, the Spirit of the Fourth Parade, the Red Cross, and Community Emergency Response Team, and was chair of the Fire Station #33 Renovation Committee. She was inducted into the RB Hall of Fame in 2004, and served as honorary mayor of Rancho Bernardo in 2010. Robin led her pet therapy chapter for 10 years and trained over 100 pet therapy teams. She and her dogs continue to visit hospitals, senior living facilities, libraries, veterans, developmentally challenged populations, and other groups in need. She’s also a volunteer with the San Diego District Attorney’s Office’s Court Support dog program. Three of her dogs are certified for the program. Embracing Local

Second Chance Beer Co. Adds Unique Flair to the Community

At just under a year old, Second Chance Beer Co. is already making a splash in the renowned San Diego craft brewery scene. The up-and-coming establishment has already received several notable recognitions for its work. Second Chance was voted best new beer spot of 2015 by readers of the craft beer magazine West Coaster, and was also featured in San Diego Magazine as best new brewery of 2016. The brewery embraces the idea of opportunity in all areas of life. “We love the idea of second chances!” said Co-founder and Brewmaster Marty Mendiola. “We all need a second chance at some point in our lives. We feel it is such a fortunate moment when we get one that we are obliged to seize it and do something good with it.” The brewery also works to uphold its core principles by incorporating many recycled and repurposed materials throughout the brewery and taproom for a “second life.” Second Chance has earned staying power among locals not only for its unique, flavorful brews, but thanks in large part to its community involvement. They host community night on Mondays, where all Carmel Mountain Ranch residents and employees of businesses located on Avenue of Science get discounts and growler refill specials. They also team up with local charities, hold meetings and social events for important local organizations, and encourage guests to support other local businesses. “We wanted a location with a strong sense of community,” said Marty. “Our surrounding neighborhoods of Rancho Bernardo, Poway, 4S Ranch, Peñasquitos, and Scripps Ranch all have long histories and we are fortunate to be close to them all.” For its one-year anniversary on Labor Day, Second Chance plans to release several new beers and will host a beer and food pairing dinner, a cornhole tournament, and other fun events for the whole community to enjoy all weekend long. ¢

Beat the heat! When temperatures soar, the risk of heat-related illness (also known as sunstroke) increases. Older adults, young children, people with high blood pressure or heart disease, and those who work or train outdoors are especially at risk. Heat related illness can range from a mild rash (also known as prickly heat) to heat stroke, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention. Symptoms of heat stroke can include a body temperature of 102° and rising; confusion, fainting or seizure; red, hot skin; heavy sweating, difficulty breathing; vomiting and nausea; and a racing heart rate.

Aeron Wickes, MD

When to seek medical care

Graybill Medical Group Sabre Springs Office 12650 Sabre Springs Pky., Suite 204 San Diego, CA 92128 858.679.9262

• If you have any symptoms of heat stroke 911. • If you’ve cooled off but still are experiencing headache or lightheadedness, dizziness, fatigue, or nausea, call your doctor or visit an Urgent Care facility. Prevention is key Follow these tips to stay healthy during hot weather. • Stay indoors in an air-conditioned place or take a cool shower or bath. Or find a mall or other public place where you can stay cool.

STUDENT SPORTS PHYSICALS (appt. req’d)

• Stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Avoid alcohol, sodas, or sugary drinks--they can actually cause you to lose more body fluid! • Limit outdoor exercise. If you must work out, drink about 8 ounces of cool (not ice-cold) liquids every twenty minutes. If exercising for more than an hour, switch to a sports drink that can replace salt and minerals lost through sweat. (If you’re on a low salt diet or have high blood pressure, check with your doctor before using sports drinks.) • Always use sunscreen when outdoors. People of all ages should protect their skin, but it’s even more vital for children, whose skin is more susceptible to damage. Keep babies out of the sun completely or use physical barriers such as umbrellas or hats in place of sunscreen. • Never leave a child or pet in a closed car. This seems like a no-brainer, yet every year dozens of children and pets succumb to heat stroke under these circumstances. Dr. Aeron Wickes is a Family Practice Physician in Graybill Medical Group’s Sabre Springs Office. He treats all family members and welcomes new patients.

Soroptimist High Tea & Fashion Show ANNUAL FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

N

early 400 people attended the recent 6th Annual High Tea & Fashion Show to support Soroptimist International of Rancho Bernardo and Soroptimist International of Poway’s Transitional Housing Program, which provides housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children as well as other programs supporting women and girls. The event was cochaired by SIRB club members Pam Warnock and Ginny Brown. The main purpose of the annual event is to raise funds to provide a safe and supportive living environment for battered women and their children. Since 1996, the Poway and Rancho Bernardo clubs have helped over 51 mothers and 115 children reclaim their lives. After the success of last year’s event, the clubs were able to add another apartment to the Transitional Housing Program for women moving away from dependency and abuse. This year’s fashion show featured students from Palomar College’s Fashion Design & Merchandising Department, providing a

learning opportunity for them as they prepare to launch their careers. The Alice in Wonderland characters in costumes, sewn by former Palomar student Cindee Ferris, were a great surprise to all in attendance. The gala, auction, and fashion show grossed over $93,100 this year, with which the clubs hope to be able to add yet another apartment to the program. The clubs were pleased with the overwhelming response received from both sponsors and attendees alike. Without the combined effort of both the Rancho Bernardo and Poway clubs, this event would not have been possible. A CENTENNIAL

CELEBRATION Be Part of the Pride by Celebrating the San Diego Zoo's 100th Year by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

aterfalls cascading over rocks into pools below, the sun peeking through thick foliage, faint sounds of birds chirping and monkeys laughing in the distance... It's easy to forget for a moment that you're not actually strolling through the jungle! And that is the beauty of the worldfamous San Diego Zoo: it connects people closely with animals in the most natural way possible. The San Diego Zoo, operated by San Diego Zoo Global, has been a pioneer in the zoological sphere since its inception in 1916, from being among the first in the world to build innovative open-air grotto exhibits to making key contributions to medical research, natural science, and wildlife conservation. This year the zoo celebrates its centennial anniversary – 100 years of trials and triumphs, fun memories, and, of course, lots of fascinating animals! With over 3,500 rare and endangered animals, more than 650 species and subspecies, and over 700,000 exotic plants living on the 100-acre property, the zoo is dedicated to preserving wildlife as one of the world's leading global conservation organizations. Some have even referred to the zoo as a living outdoor classroom, educating children and adults alike about the natural world. So for the remainder of the year, join us in celebrating the extraordinary people and animals who have made this beloved San Diego icon what it is today.

Culture Club Promotes Indian Heritage

T

he South Asian Culture Club put on its annual show at the Del Norte Performing Arts Center on the weekend of May 23. The club organizes nine dances from a variety of genres like hip hop, Bollywood, and classical Indian dance and performs them for parents, friends, and students. The original creators of the club hoped that dance and music would be an effective way for them and their friends to experience and understand their heritage. Simran Cheema, a senior at RB High and the president of the South Asian Culture club, said that being in the program since her freshman year has helped expand her knowledge about Indian culture. “Being in SACS these past four years has introduced me to the different aspects of the South Asian culture and how we can all come together to honor our heritage all while contributing to charities back at home,” Cheema said. One of the dances Cheema choreographed was a classical dance that was a mix of many forms including the Kathak and Bharatanatyam. Both of these classical dance styles involve telling a story through performing arts and involve many years practice to perfect

them. For most girls, mastering the dance style takes almost 16 years, and it involves continuously dancing throughout their childhood. The program also allows non-South Asian students to participate in their dances as a way for others to learn about the Indian culture. Ellen Kim, a senior at RB High, said that she originally decided to just show up to the annual SACS mixer, where everyone who plans to participate gets to know each other, but was convinced by her friends to take part in her final year of high school. Kim also said that getting to learn about a new culture and spend time with close friends at the end of the year was a rewarding experience. “It was a good experience because I met a lot of new people,” Kim said. “It was fun to try something outside my comfort zone and raise my cultural awareness.” ¢

The Selling and Buying Season Is Upon Us by DAN CONWAY

T

he California Association of Realtors (CAR) wrote, “California’s housing market is expected to improve in 2016, but a shortage of available inventory and continuing high costs are expected to limit the improvement. According to CAR’s 2016 California Housing Market Forecast, existing home sales are expected to rise in 2016 by 6.3% over 2015’s expected total.” Home prices are also expected to rise this year, although at a slower rate than last year due to a still-tight inventory supply. Bottom line: get on the interest list of a community that interests you and be ready to get qualified ahead of time. That way, when you find the right fit, you are ready to go. Realtor.com lists San Diego among the nation’s 10 hottest markets, based on the company’s listing data. It was number three on their list of real estate markets to watch in 2016. San Diego’s spot as one of the top housing markets is the result of a limited supply of homes for sale and an increased demand. Look for more construction of single-family and multifamily residences this year. While supply of the mid-level homes inventory is still low, look for some relief this year. “California’s housing market is moving in the right direction as we enter the spring home-buying season, but sales growth will likely be isolated in areas where inventory is more abundant and housing affordability is less of an issue,” said CAR President Pat “Ziggy” Zicarelli.

“IS TREATMENT REALLY NECESSARY?”

ASK THE PLUMBER!

Brockmire Plumbing Services Inc., DBA BPS Plumbing and Drains has been bringing expertise and quality services to San Diego County for over 20 years. BPS Founder and Owner Eric Brockmire began plumbing in 1987. A few years later he knew he wanted to start his own business that would provide better service than the industry standard, and BPS was born. Eric wanted to know why so many plumbing fixtures kept breaking, so he got to the root of the problem. “I realized that the quality of the water had a major effect on the plumbing systems and the appliances,” Eric said. “So I started learning about water...and BPS came up with solutions.” BPS is unique from other plumbing companies in that it directly addresses this issue by offering water quality solutions. “We have access to the best equipment in the industry that will provide you with many years of great tasting and high quality water that keeps your plumbing working great and you feeling healthy.” In addition to water treatment, BPS provides other comprehensive plumbing services, including drain clearing, water heater repair and replacement, leak detection and locating, and sewer inspection and

repair, just to name a few. Above all else, BPS is a leader in the industry because they focus on business integrity and bringing only the highest levels of knowledge and experience to their customers. They also genuinely care about finding solutions and providing options that fit within the customer’s budget. “We are an honest company,” said Eric. “Let us prove how professional we are and how much we really do care.” ¢

Our landscape designers have over 25 years experience in the inductry, providing aesthetically valuable landscapes & hardscapes to residents all over the county. We strive to add value to your home, while helping you save time and money each month on maintenance costs. California Smartscape is truly fantastic. From start to finish they were extremely professional in every sense of the word. We were in serious need of a creative mind to help us with our front & backyard. We have 2 young children and a dog, but we also entertain our friends and family. So the idea was to come up with an environment that could achieve this and maximize the usable space both children & adults could enjoy.” - Stephen H.
