Let’s Rock On!

A

Derrick Breaux Publisher

s many of you know, I spent a great deal of my childhood in Texas. I have fond memories of family evenings with a close friend digging into classic country and southern rock songs with nothing more than his deep voice, guitar, and love of entertaining. He was always reluctant to play at first, but after the required nudges, he coincidentally would have his guitar in the truck and treat everyone to a wonderful experience that is hard to match. My wife and I recently opened the door to music in the Breaux household by purchasing a guitar for our son and a piano for our youngest daughter. Each kid chose their own instrument. Microphones, amps, and lots of wires later, we were geared up for them to make some music. So, we found a great music instructor for weekly lessons. It was slowgoing at first. While I tried offering words of wisdom (as if I had a clue) about the learning curve and ultimate satisfaction of completing their first song, our kids reluctantly pushed on. Then it happened. Our son learned the chords and vocals to an entire song – Justin Beiber’s Love Yourself. He began playing it more. He tested it out in front of his friends, eventually graduating to open mic nights at local eateries, as well as small festival performances set up by his instructor. Not wanting to be a one-song performer, my son is pushing hard to learn more songs for future shows. I think he’s caught the performing bug. Our daughter is close behind, even though she is still a little unsure about the performance part. Taking things one step further, I used an iPad (and more wires) to turn our living room into a karaoke studio. Okay, so I just made that sound better than it really is, but it’s a cool setup nonetheless. What my wife and I witnessed after was nothing short of amazing. Our kids and their friends have been singing just about every song you can think of. They sing some seriously, while others are simply for kicks. The most important thing is that they are laughing, dancing, and having a great time. I’m glad we left our bubble and opened a new opportunity for them. Even if the ultimate outcome is just for them to be able to pick up an instrument and make close friends and family feel good on a relaxing evening in the backyard – it’s worth it. Thanks for reading 92128 Magazine. Be sure to reach out to our advertising partners and let them know you saw them in the magazine.

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher P.S. Get a glimpse at: #PeytonBreauxRocks & #TheFineTuneAcademy on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube.

Blue Ribbon School

CREEKSIDE ELEMENTARY RECOGNIZED BY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

C

reekside Elementary School was one of 329 schools recently recognized as a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King. All selected schools are recognized in one of two performance categories: Exemplary High Performing Schools, which are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests, or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools, which are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the

past five years. Creekside was selected as an Exemplary High Performing School. As part of the nationally recognized Poway Unified School District, Creekside Elementary is committed to building a community of lifelong learners who are prepared for future success. Staff, parents, and students have come together since the school’s opening in 2001 in order to create a positive learning environment that fosters responsibility, collaboration, communication, and provides opportunities for all children to experience success. Every year for over 30 years, the U.S.

Department of Education has sought out and celebrated outstanding schools throughout the country. The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. While the recipients of this award are diverse in many ways, they all share the core elements of effective schools: mutual respect, trust, high standards, and a vision of excellence. he 5th Annual Rancho BEERnardo Festival, San Diego’s only IPA festival and main fundraising event for the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club, was a wild success this year. Over 750 people were in attendance, some even coming from as far away as Los Angeles. There were over 50 IPA craft beers available for tasting, local wine tastings, food, live music, games, and lots of fun with neighbors and friends at Webb Park. The event, cosponsored by the RB Sunrise Rotary and URGE Gastropub, raised a record-breaking $80,000 for numerous nonprofit groups in the community and internationally. Oncology Dietitian Angelea Bruce Delivers Nutrition With Compassion When Patients Cannot Eat by LYDIA COBB | photo by Spark Photography

B

orn in Inglewood, Angelea Bruce grew up in Coeur d’Alene, ID. She moved back to Southern California for college and transferred to San Jose State University for her degree in nutrition and food science. The journey she and her husband Phil took in becoming vegan inspired her path. They moved here from Carmel Mt. Ranch in 2005. Phil is a research and development scientist for a medical diagnostics company. With three teens at Rancho Bernardo High School, life is on the move. Angelea is an oncology dietitian for the Laurel Amtower Cancer Institute and Neuro-Oncology Center at Sharp Memorial campus. She spends time with patients undergoing cancer treatments. “On any given day I might help a woman with breast cancer sort through the cacophony of nutrition advice she is getting from well-intentioned friends and family,” said Angelea, who is pastpresident of the San Diego chapter of the American Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition. “I’ll meet with a person with pancreatic cancer to address weight loss and pain associated with eating, and go on to assess the needs of someone who has had a major surgery.” She is attuned to the emotional and physical needs of both patients and their families. She began her career at the UC Irvine Medical Center, where she delivered nutrition through a tube or vein. Coming to San Diego, she cared for in-home patients. Angelea explained, “I learned how the appropriate type and timing of nutrition interventions made a very real difference in whether people could tolerate and complete their cancer treatments.” Their children – Phillip, age 15, and twins Connor and Erin, age 14 – play trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone in the school’s marching band. She loves time with family and walking and relaxing at the beach. Her book club, Read Between the Lines, has been her mainstay for a decade. “They are 12 of the reasons why I love this RB community,” shared Angelea. “I appreciate how we have all encouraged and supported one another over the years.” Angelea is pursuing research in the nutritional needs of people with cancers of the head and neck. She summed up what patients desire: “Sometimes the thing people need most, during and after cancer treatment, is someone to listen to them and validate their fears, worries, and joys. It’s one of the most gratifying parts of what I do.” In times of greatest need, Angelea provides fuel for the body and soul. 

his December, Michele and Mark Coast celebrate 20 years in Rancho Bernardo. They’ve come a long way since they met while attending Cal State University Northridge. Michele now works from her home office as a media buyer for Cannella Response Media, and Mark is a Colonel in the USMC-Reserve – he’ll be retiring in April 2017 after 30 years of service and moving forward with his own business, Ceveal Solutions, which he’s opened with two other military reservists. The couple moved to Rancho Bernardo in 1996 when Mark was sent to work here as a Special Agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

They’ve been in their current Montelena home for 14 and a half years, and the family now includes Nick, 18, Alex, 16, and Lauren, 14. “We moved to Montelena when we were expecting our third child and wanted a yard for our growing family,” explained Michele. “We love our neighborhood and all the close-by amenities.” Those amenities include plenty of opportunities for the whole family to stay active. “Our family logs a lot of hours at baseball games,” Michele shared. Nick is currently a freshman in college and is headed to Cal Lutheran in January, where he’ll play baseball for the Kingsmen. His younger brother Alex is a junior at Rancho Bernardo High School and plays baseball for both the Broncos and the West Coast Clippers. Lauren is an eighth grader at Bernardo Heights Middle school – she’s a member of the California Junior Scholarship Federation and hopes to play golf for the Broncos next year. “We of course love our San Diego beaches, as well as skiing and snowboarding in the local mountains,” Michele added. “Mark and I are both gym junkies – he works out at LA Fitness, and I work out at Studio Sweat.” There have been challenges along the way. “When Lauren was only 10 weeks old and the boys were three and four, Mark was activated by the USMC-Reserve to go to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 1,” Michele said. Mark served four tours, leaving Michele and the children to manage the home-front operations. Without much internet access, the family relied on snail mail and DVDs of Mark reading books to the kids to stay connected. Michele said, "While there were some trying times, our family became stronger because of it.” Now, this close-knit family is enjoying the life they’ve built together here in 92128. 

Choosing the Right Primary Care Physician (pcp) N

ow is the time of year when many people are deciding who will be their Primary Care Physician, or PCP. Most health insurance plans require a person to appoint a PCP—usually a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)—to oversee their overall health and wellness needs. The three main categories of PCPs include: ✔ Family Physicians:Trained to treat patients of all ages ✔ Pediatricians: Specialists in the medical needs of

babies, children and adolescents

✔ Internists: Focused on the needs of adults.

Think of your PCP as your advocate in the healthcare system. Except in the case of an emergency, your PCP is generally your initial point of contact for your healthcare needs. He/she will 1) diagnose and treat common conditions; 2) educate you on making healthy lifestyle changes and other preventive measures;

3) assess urgent problems and direct you to appropriate care; 4) coordinate the referral process if you need to see a specialist. Many people have a long-term relationship with their PCP and refer to their PCP as “my doctor” or “our family physician.” Having a doctor-patient relationship built on trust and confidence is one of the keys to receiving quality health care. As you’re looking at different doctors in your health insurance provider directory, think about what you want in a health partnership. Does the doctor’s office need to be close to work or home? Can you make early morning, evening or weekend appointments? Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? Would you prefer someone who is similar in age or of the same gender? For quality care, make sure you choose the right PCP for your unique healthcare needs.

Dr. Aeron Wickes is a Family Practice Physician in Graybill Medical Group’s Sabre Springs Office. It is located at 12650 Sabre Springs Pky., Suite 204, San Diego, CA 92128. Arianna Kier Shuler Rancho Bernardo High School 10 Anna Vasquez and Kevin Shuler Joaquin (7), Trinity (9), Cheyenne (16) My favorite place is the plaza in Carmel Mountain. I always see people there that I know and there is a variety of good things to eat there like In-N-Out and Chick-fil-A

10th grader at Rancho Bernardo High School, Arianna Shuler can be found anywhere from cheering on the football field to volunteering at the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County. “I really like to be active in my school and community because I feel more connected to those around me,” she shared. The 92128 student star has high energy, diverse commitments, and plenty of inspiration. At the age of five, Arianna began participating in Girl Scouts and cheerleading. These activities have come to play a big role in her life ever since, earning her recognition for her hard work and commitment in both. From the Girl Scouts, Arianna was awarded the Bronze and Silver Awards and is now working towards her Gold Award. As a cheerleader, for many years with RB Pop Warner Cheer, she was selected as an All-American Cheerleader Scholar. This year, Arianna is the cheer captain for the RBHS JV squad. Today as a high school student, Arianna seeks different ways to be

active and connected. “I tried something new last year,” she explained, “by joining the shot put and discus team for the RB track team, and I started playing rugby recently.” She enjoys a challenge in the classroom, too. “Even though it’s a tough class, I am really enjoying AP European History,” Arianna shared. “It requires a lot of time, but I love learning about the past, and Mr. Basehore, our teacher, makes things really interesting by relating it to the world today.” She appreciates all the staff and students at RBHS. “I like the fact that there is a lot of diversity, but people there are really inclusive,” she acknowledged. “I know that everyone on staff is there to help us, from the office secretaries all the way up to our principal, Mr. LeMaster, who goes to almost every event.” As for her inspiration, Arianna looks to “strong, smart, determined women,” in particular American businesswoman Mellody Hobson. Arianna plans to major in business at one of the UC or CSU schools “because California has the best schools.” Long-term, she shared, “I want to work as a DEA or FBI agent, fields where women of color are especially underrepresented.” 

As the owner, manager, and executive chef, her hands-on dedication to quality has driven Lai Thai Restaurant’s success, both at the original National City location and the second location in Carmel Mountain Plaza. In addition to owning the two Lai Thai Restaurants, Nikki also owns Takhrai Thai in Poway. Popular salad options include the green papaya salad and Yum Nuah, also known as beef salad. “The Pad Thai noodles tickle your taste buds with thin, flat rice noodles stir-fried with bean sprouts and eggs, topped with crushed peanuts,” said Nikki. Guests can also cool down with Thai iced tea and specialty blended iced drinks, with fresh, exotic flavors including lychee, mango, and taro. Coffee, wine, and Singha beer are also available. Hands-On Treatment ASIS Physical Therapy Treats Patients Using an Advanced, Individualized Approach to Prove “Better Is Just the Beginning”

S

ince 2008, ASIS Physical Therapy has been providing a more individualized approach to physical therapy. Founder Vanessa Jackson, P.T., D.P.T., started ASIS physical therapy after experiencing differing quality of treatments for patients based only on different insurance plans, along with a high-volume demand, which didn’t allow her to give all of her energy and care to each patient. Vanessa’s ethics demanded something better. Co-owner Dr. Kevin Pansky explained, “She believed that she wanted to treat her patients just as she would her own family, and from this ASIS was born.” With an innovative and creative approach to problem solving patients’ unique challenges, ASIS utilizes a researchbased hands-on therapy approach coupled with specific exercise prescription to help patients “feel the difference” every single session. The original name of the practice read Individualized Service, Innovative Solutions, or ISIS – so to avoid confusion, the name was recently adjusted and re-branded as Advanced Service, Innovative Solutions, or ASIS which speaks to their core values. Since no two injuries are the same, no protocols or group therapy are ever utilized here, and each patient receives one-onone, hands-on, individualized therapeutic techniques every session. “Most clinics simply

by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by ASIS Physical Therapy

do exercises and stretching,” said Dr. Pansky, “which is not effective for most injuries and delays healing by weeks and sometimes months.” ASIS requires top-tier education for all their Physical Therapists – all P.T.s are Doctors of Physical Therapy – and doesn’t use P.T. assistants. ASIS staff complete more than double the required amount of continuing education every year. While many clinics use shortened evaluations, an evaluation at ASIS goes 90 minutes-plus to really uncover the root of the problem. Where other clinics typically see more than one patient concurrently, ASIS treats only one at a time – two per hour maximum. “We believe in quality over quantity,” said Dr. Pansky, “which is why our methods are tried and true, and people travel from long distances to get treatment at our facilities.” Treating all age groups, ASIS is great for pain relief, improving function such as sports performance, balance, strength, mobility, and stamina. New patients get in for treatment quickly, and the front desk and management teams work seamlessly together to facilitate the transition from scheduling to evaluating to healing. Personal attention is given to every aspect of the business to ultimately give topnotch, excellent patient care. “Every patient is valued, and making sure you get in and treated

in a timely, harmonious fashion is the goal!” said Clinic Manager Melodie Nungesser. If you want treatment in a place that is positive, energetic, comfortable, professional, and fun, look to ASIS for your physical therapy needs. 

COMMUNITY STUFF

Local Basketball Programs Give Back

Members of the Bronco Ball Youth Basketball Program and Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) boys basketball team participated in a volunteering event to give back to the community in late October. “I wanted to unite the two programs in a volunteer event, as they both obviously have the sport of basketball in common but are also built on family and community,” explained Bronco Ball Youth Basketball board member Karie Brown, who arranged the opportunity. “I wanted to arrange an event where the students could volunteer their time in giving back to our community.” The boys went to the Feeding America distribution center in Sorrento Valley, where they learned how the food was donated and then assisted the organization in their efforts. Karie plans to schedule another volunteer event later in the school year for the girls’ programs to participate as well. “Community is important to both programs, and the Bronco Boys are proud to be involved,” Karie said.

Enrichment classes including sports, dance, and gymnastics classes will be added in the new year. The Rancho Bernardo High School Foundation and PTSA Bring the Community Together to Support Education in 92128

ducation is vital not just for students but for the vibrancy and prosperity of the community as a whole. Rancho

Bernardo High School (RBHS) and the 92128 community benefit from two dedicated parentdriven organizations – the RBHS Foundation and the RBHS PTSA. The foundation, currently led by President Mike Jones, began as an athletic foundation at the school’s founding in 1990, and now hosts annual pancake breakfast and pasta dinner events. The PTSA, under the direction of President Michelle Perry, organizes the annual Reflections art program, Shred-A-Thons, and other fundraising opportunities. The foundation and PTSA help fund education technology, classroom equipment, and athletic and art programs. We spoke with each president to learn more about how each organization unites the community in supporting local students.

Q&A WITH

Mike Jones

Rancho Bernardo High School Foundation President What is the history and inspiration behind the Rancho Bernardo High School Foundation?

desire to create a world-class high school experience for our students and faculty.

We were founded in 1990, when Rancho Bernardo High School first opened its doors. Dedicated parent volunteers formed an athletic foundation to raise money to buy lights for the new football stadium. We are still an all-volunteer dedicated board of parents, alumni, community and business leaders, and education leaders who share a

How has the foundation evolved over the years? Through the years, we have expanded the scope of the foundation’s fundraising to support the entire school. We fund technology, classroom equipment, and facility needs on campus. What is your mission, and why is it important for schools to have foundations? Our mission is simple: raise funds to help bridge the gap between state and local budgets and the cost of a well-rounded education and great high school experience that includes essentials like music, arts, and athletics, along with the cores of reading, writing, math, and critical thinking. Along the way, we get the opportunity to bring the

community together and create opportunities for our students and our community to work together and make new friends. This is important in today’s world not only for the obvious financial reasons, but also to help foster that strong sense of community that we are known for here in Rancho Bernardo. How did you get involved with the foundation, and what is your current role? My wife, Lisa, has been a member since 2011. I became involved with the foundation through my work on the Gridiron Club board, which supports the football team. I joined the foundation in 2015 as president because I believe in what they do and wanted to contribute to the school on a broader scale. We are all volunteers at heart – it’s what we do. It takes a lot of work and a lot of money to have a full offering of athletics and arts programs in public high schools today. We all feel a sense of pride in playing a small part to ensure that our students have a broad selection of campus groups, teams, and activities from which to choose. This contributes to a great high school experience and offers all students an opportunity to find their own community within such a large school. What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of your role with the foundation? Rewarding: the friendships we’ve made and the great times we have together at fundraising events. Seeing students having a great time and being successful.

Challenging: keeping fundraisers fresh and engaging. As parents, we sometimes can feel like there’s a long line of people asking us for money, especially at the beginning of the school year. I don’t remember it being that way when I was a kid in school, but it’s a fact of life today. Budgets are tight and education is expensive. Our foundation team has to work hard to show the value of those contributions and to create the motivation for parents and community members to contribute. What is most exciting about being a part of the foundation? The exciting part for me is the challenge of fundraising. It’s tough finding ways to make people excited to give you money. I think it’s easy for us to take for granted the quality of education in the Poway Unified School District. It has been a very eye-opening experience for me to learn what our teachers and administrators do in order to provide a great education and a great experience for our students. They are amazing people and dedicated almost beyond belief. I’m excited to be around and to work with such incredible people. Can you tell us a bit about some of the other key players in the foundation? Without a doubt, Denise Davis and Teri Wyness are two of the most amazing volunteers I know! They are the heart and soul of this foundation. They haven’t had children at this school for years, but still put in hundreds of hours of volunteer time. They are both

serial volunteers, lending their time and talents to other organizations outside of the foundation as well, and I thank the good Lord for them at least once a week! Gretchen Christensen, our secretary, and Rob Bernhardt, our VP, are also incredible contributors, working behind the scenes and often out of the spotlight, but always the first to show up and the last to leave an event. Haochi Shi, our webmaster, is an RBHS alumnus who lends his talent and is a long way from having kids at the high school. Other long-tenured general members and hearty volunteers are Tom Roehrig and Johnny Miyasaki. They’re usually the first to raise their hands when help is needed. Honestly, everyone on this foundation is an ‘A’ player, and all are very special people with big hearts and no fear of hard work. Can you highlight any significant upcoming dates? Our next fundraising event is our annual pasta dinner in March to support our spring sports teams. We are hoping to anchor it to another major school event to

encourage attendance by students, parents, and the community. Does the foundation hold any fundraisers throughout the year? We have our donation letter campaign out and active to RBHS parents. The letter campaign is an easy way for parents to make a donation and highlights some great examples of what we have accomplished at school with the contributions from parents and the community in the past year. We hold two major fundraising events each year. Our annual pancake breakfast and craft fair is held the last Saturday of September. We are the only school in the district to hold an event of this size on our campus. It has been a school and community tradition for 26 years! Our awardwinning band and choir as well as our amazing cheer and dance teams perform. The student groups and teams on campus sell tickets to the event for $5, and keep $4 for their group or team. This year, we sold over 3,000 tickets and fed almost 1,500 people! Our other major event is the pasta dinner.

C O V E R F E AT U R E How can the community help contribute to the work that the foundation does? Time, talent, and treasure! We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the parent center on campus. There are countless opportunities for parents, alumni, and the community to contribute through helping coordinate events and fundraising efforts, working at the events, searching out and applying for grants on behalf of the foundation, and of course through monetary donations! As a registered 501(c)(3)

organization, we can also help coordinate employer matching funds for people that work for companies that have a matching funds program. What are your long-term and short-term goals for the foundation? They are really one in the same: to continue to find creative and fun ways to raise money for our school and to bring the Bronco community together with the greater Rancho Bernardo community to create a strong family connection for us all.

What are you looking forward to the most this year?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I just love going to all of the different events and activities at our school. Lisa and I are regulars at sporting events, choir concerts, marching band competitions, and plays. Through my own children (two Bronco graduates and one current senior), I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in about 13 different student groups, athletic teams, and performing arts groups on this campus over the past eight years. High school is so much more fun the second or third time around!

I’ve found through my years of volunteering and being involved in my children’s activities at RBHS that I’ve made some wonderful, lifelong friends and some really fun memories. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know my kids’ friends, coaches, teachers, and administrators on a personal level. I encourage parents to get involved in some way with their school. It’s a wonderful way to expand your own community, and it’s very rewarding in many ways!

The PTSA is the largest volunteer advocacy association working exclusively on behalf of all children. For more than 100 years, it has promoted the education, health, and safety of children, youth, and families (www.capta.org/about/ourmission/whatwestandfor). Rancho Bernardo High School embraced the PTSA’s mission and felt that the PTSA would be an asset to the school community. How has the PTSA evolved over the years? The PTSA has evolved to find new ways to address the diverse needs of the student population. We have also had to change the way in which we engage with our students, teachers, and families by using social media platforms, new technology, and basing our

outreach efforts on research regarding how to engage our communities effectively. What is your mission, and why is it important for schools to have PTSAs? The PTSA’s mission is to positively impact the lives of all children and families. It is important for schools to have a PTSA to provide an additional resource for families, teachers, and students.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

SCOUT’S HONOR

Brandon Zeidler Is the Cubmaster of Troop 624 – and a Leader in All He Undertakes by LYDIA COBB | photo by Spark Photography

W

hen Brandon Zeidler was 15 and growing up in Scripps Ranch, he penned his life goals. His Eagle Scout application detailed his ambitions to earn a PhD in electrical engineering, to raise an active family, and to continue in scout leadership if he had sons. Check! His goals were met, and continue to evolve. Brandon is Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 624 with boys spanning first through fifth grade in Carmel Mt. Ranch. “I owe my success to the unique combination of technical education that I learned in school and the leadership skills that I developed in scouting,” said Brandon. He and his wife, Michelle, have two young sons who attend Shoal Creek Elementary. Drake is in third grade and a Bear Scout. Their future Tiger Cub, Gavin, is in kindergarten. The Zeidlers bought their first home here in 2007 and feel blessed to have their families nearby. In high school, Brandon started a computer repair business and was hired for his first high-tech job. He attended UCSB on a full scholarship and graduated with honors in electrical and computer engineering, and added, “I had the privilege of being selected to deliver our commencement address.” His father inspires him. He is a retired Navy scientist and emeritus research physicist at UCSD. Together, they co-founded Adaptive Dynamics, Inc. – from literally the kitchen table – to an expanded facility in the community. Brandon solved a problem that revolutionized digital signal processing and trademarked the invention of the MAGIC© filter. He elaborated, “This technique makes it possible to do things with radio signals that are akin to separating individual voices in a crowded room, or hearing a mouse squeak in a rock concert.”

His talents in outdoor sports are credited to scouting. But some children struggle more than others. That’s why Brandon is entrusted with the boys that have potential but need an extra guiding hand. “I want to see all our boys prepared not merely to succeed, but to be the leaders at the forefront of their professional fields and local communities, and dedicated to the cause of instilling these values in the next generation,” he added. “I also think it’s a lot of fun to lead crazy songs at our pack events and connect with the boys doing silly things.” With humor and a dedication for teamwork, Brandon thrives in volunteerism. It’s more than a campout. It’s about nurturing future leaders. 

B E H I N D PAG E S Meet the

Team

Producing six issues of 14 community magazines per year is no easy feat. Our goal from the very beginning has been to create local magazines with content that people actually want to read. Luckily for us, we have an all-star squad that works together to make this vision a reality. Behind each issue is our close-knit team – editors who collect the stories, production leaders who work with our valued advertisers, photographers who capture the perfect moment, and graphic designers who make it all look pretty. And while we have different personal interests, all of us here at ZCode have one thing in common: we are passionate about what makes each of these North County communities so special. It’s because of you that we do what we do. Thank you for inviting us into your home and being a loyal reader of 92128 Magazine. We look forward to bringing you exciting community news for many more years to come.

DERRICK BREAUX | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics, and sales teams.

LAINEY KRAL | Associate Editor I joined the phenomenal ZCode team two years ago, and the best part of my job is the opportunity to talk to all of you. I love learning about the individuals, families, and organizations that make our communities so special. A North County native currently living in North Park, I spend my weekends hanging out with friends and family, diving into fantasy novels, and riding other people’s horses.

RANDI CANTRELL | Associate Editor Like a lot of my fellow ZCoders, I was born and raised in San Diego. I recently celebrated my first wedding anniversary and my second anniversary of working on the ZCode team. You can find me huddled over the latest edits or planning out our upcoming issues with one of my color-coded spreadsheets. Out of the office, I’m usually searching for that perfect cup of coffee, lifting heavy stuff at the gym, reading a good book, or running interference between my dog and cat, whose friendship is still a work-in-progress thing.

SHYANNE LOPEZ | Associate Editor Born in Los Angeles and raised in Murrieta, I’m somewhat of a newcomer to San Diego. Luckily, joining the fantastic team of creatives at ZCode has really allowed me to learn and love so much about this beautiful city I now call home. When not in the office searching for cool stories and people to feature, I can be found tending my succulent garden, “discovering” a new brewery, or taking selfies with my dog.

SAMANTHA EDWARDS | Editorial Assistant I was born and raised in North County San Diego and after spending five years away, I don’t think I’ll ever be leaving again! It has been a dream come true for me to join the ZCode team. In the office you can find me furiously typing away or sifting through piles of paper proofs. Outside of the office I’m usually baking, writing, drinking wine, walking my dog, or spending time with family and friends.

JESSICA BREAUX | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing, and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots, just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.

MARIA FERNANDEZ | Graphic Designer I was born and raised in Mexico where I was surrounded by the love of my big family and friends. Before moving to San Diego I lived in Washington state where I worked at JWT Inside and the University of Washington. I am passionate about graphic design, and I love to connect with the community through my design. It’s a pleasure to be doing what I love at ZCode, a place that has become an extension of my family. I like spending time with my family, hiking, reading, and loud laughter.

SHARI CANETE | Graphic Designer I have strong ties to Canada, but San Diego has always been my home. And I feel very fortunate to be part of the ZCode family. In the office, I’m the one clacking away on the keyboard trying to find the perfect color combo. Out of the office, I’m obsessing over ancient alien theories, running madly outdoors, enjoying San Diego cuisine, or taking my big fur-baby on adventures around the neighborhood. And I’m a huge coffee fiend.

HEATHER LOCKWOOD | Production Coordinator I am a mother to three wonderful children, and a wife to the love of my life of 20 years, with over 10 pets – dogs, cats, guinea pig, and a bird. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.

MONICA COGGER | Senior Account Executive Originally from the Midwest, San Diego has been our home since 2003. My husband John has kept me entertained, laughing, and in love for the last 17 years. We have three kids whom I often refer to as “Our Happy Trio.” At ZCode, I enjoy meeting and connecting with our community. I love my job and our magazines! Outside of work, you’d find me watching our kids’ volleyball games, basketball games, and cello performances. As a family, we love going to the beach, spending time with my parents in Rancho Bernardo, quick getaways to Palm Springs, and catching up with friends. I also enjoy CrossFit and stand-up paddleboarding – as often as I can fit either in.

LORI LUM | Photographer I have owned and operated Spark Photography for just over a decade. I am a past president of Professional Photographers of San Diego County, and my passion is creating visual legacies for families and organizations. I love working with the ZCode team and meeting all kinds of new people in the neighborhoods I cover. Originally from Iowa, I enjoy the San Diego sunshine and live with my husband and adorable two-year-old daughter. In my spare time, I like to get outdoors with my family, read, and cook.

DENTISTRY PROFILE

WHY SCRIPPS ROCK DENTAL

DOES WHAT IT DOES

by DR. ANTHONY E. HATCH | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

S

cripps Rock Dental was built around the core belief that the experience of dentistry needs to be changed from the status quo. This dental office was originally born on the East Coast in a commuter town near Baltimore and Washington D.C. From that inception, their aim was solely to deliver the art of dentistry differently. They strive to make the dental experience friendly, easy to understand, and comfortable. In 2007, the practice moved to San Diego, and has continued to redefine the way dentistry is perceived and delivered. They have built a team that loves people – if a team member doesn’t meet that core requirement, they don’t end up staying long. If they do stay, they get to work at one of the most fun and energetic offices in the country. The team members build long-lasting, deep

friendships with one another, and it shows. Patients can feel the level of mutual respect and friendship between team members. Scripps Rock Dental strives to create an environment that makes it easy for their patients to complete the dentistry they need. This means continuously working to take the “road blocks” out of dentistry. This includes knowing the ins and outs of insurance benefits to make dental coverage as easy as possible. It means making a plan for every patient so that the team has a 100 percent clear understanding of where patients are starting from, where they want to go, and how the team with get them there – all before any treatment has begun. The team strives to put patients at ease from the first phone call. Scripps Rock Dental has a light, welcoming atmosphere that you can feel

the moment you walk in the door. Dentistry does not have to be scary or too serious! From the first meeting with your hygienist and doctor, you will sense their love of dentistry and their priority of building a caring relationship with every patient. Scripps Rock Dental loves what they do. Go on over and meet them, they’d love to meet you and show you how easy and fun your dental health can be. 

wenty-two local heroes were honored at the 5th Annual Hero Awards, a ceremony and luncheon hosted by the North San Diego Business Chamber. It was a chance for the community to come together in recognition of the dedication and personal sacrifice demonstrated by these courageous first responders and public safety officers – including a tribute to San Diego Police Officer Jonathan “JD” DeGuzman, who lost his life during a pedestrian stop this past summer. Other honorees included lifeguards, paramedics, special agents, and investigators who have all gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve this community. F

ounded in 1972, Boulder OMS is the oldest and most established oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in Poway. Offering such services as dental implants, wisdom tooth extraction, corrective jaw surgery, Botox and filler, rhinoplasty, and dental aveolar surgery, Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert T. Gramins have a high standard of care and a track record of exceptional patient results. “Our motivation is to be the most trusted and respected oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in San Diego,” stated Kelly Zielinski, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Boulder OMS. So much so that the doctors – and their staff – voluntarily undergo an onsite review of policies and practices every two years to keep its Association for Ambulatory Health Care accreditation. “This is the highest level of certification and ensures we practice to the utmost standards of safety and patient care,” elaborated Zielinski. “Additionally, Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are one of a select few oral and maxillofacial surgeons licensed by the State of California to perform facial cosmetic procedures.” Dr. Lin attended the University of Illinois for his doctorate dental degree. In 1998, he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Northwestern University Medical Center. “Dr. Lin is extensively trained in orthognathic reconstructive jaw surgery, facial trauma surgery, cosmetic facial surgery, and advanced dental implant surgery,” stated Zielinski. “He practices the full and expanded scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.” Dr. Lin

is board certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has also served as a board director, vice president, and president for the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. “On the national level, Dr. Lin served as a state delegate for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and is actively involved to ensure that the specialty itself stays current and relevant to healthcare,” added Zielinski. Dr. Gramins graduated in 1998 from Northwestern University with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. “While in dental school, Dr. Gramins was awarded a United States Navy academic scholarship and was commissioned as an officer in the Dental Corps,” noted Zielinski. Following dental school, Dr. Gramins completed a general practice residency at Great Lakes Naval Hospital and fulfilled his military service in Southern California at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base. Later, he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, is Board Certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and was selected to sit on the Cosmetic Surgery Credentialing board for the State of California, for which he has also served as president. Both doctors are highly involved with local charities including The Oral Cancer Foundation, Las Patronas, The Ronald McDonald House, and The March of Dimes. Additionally, Boulder OMS has been selected as the Official Oral and Facial Surgery practice

of the San Diego Gulls for a second season. What makes the practice so successful, explained Zielinski, is not only the doctors’ commitment to the community but to each patient’s individual needs as well. “Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins take the time to understand a patient’s needs and offer services to deliver optimal results.” ¢

ICE SKATING

THROUGH SAN DIEGO Discover One (Or More!) of San Diego’s Many Ice Skating Rinks This Winter by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

T

here aren’t many places in the world where you can lace up your skates and glide along the ice, palm trees swaying in the Pacific Ocean breeze, and then step off the rink and onto the beach in the middle of winter. Such is the case, however, at the iconic Hotel Del Coronado’s Skating by the Sea beachfront ice rink. Not only are you able to enjoy the sound of waves lapping at the shore but you will likely be swept up in the wintery cheer of it all – twinkling lights, festive music, and hot cocoa to start. But the Hotel Del isn’t the only place to ice skate this winter. Our beautiful city is home to several special holiday rinks as well as a number of rinks open yearround. Indoor ice rinks offer a variety of fun activities all year long, including public skating sessions, figure skating lessons, ice hockey leagues, broomball, ice polo, curling, and more. Some, like Escondido’s IcePlex, even have special winter-themed events to help get you in the holiday mood. While year-round rinks let you bundle up in thick socks and scarves even in the middle of July, San Diego’s holiday rinks are nothing short of magical. Viejas Outlet Ice Rink, for example, is a seasonal favorite and boasts the title of Southern California’s largest outdoor ice rink (even said to be bigger than the one at Rockefeller Center), where guests can enjoy shopping, entertainment, and a holiday water show all in one place. Poway’s Community Winter Festival features not only ice skating, but s’mores, fun decorations, and even sledding! Or you might check out the brand new outdoor rink at Point Loma’s Liberty Station, with all proceeds benefiting the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. How’s that for holiday spirit?

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H

How Will the Housing Market Look in 2017? by DAN CONWAY

N

o one, of course, can accurately predict that far in advance. There are too many variables at play. But, there is one aspect of the current housing market that would seem tough to reverse, and that’s the ability to build. First thing, we have a finite amount of land that can be developed, particularly in the city of San Diego. Secondly, a portion of our population appears unwilling to embrace density, at least in certain parts of the county, which makes it tough on planners and builders to increase supply. “We’ll be the Bay Area in no time,” said Borre Winckel, president and CEO of the Building Industry Association of San Diego. “We can offer very few product lines for the middle-class buyer.” San Diego County’s median home price stopped just short of hitting half a million

dollars in June, real estate tracker CoreLogic reported Tuesday. The median price last month reached $495,000, representing a 4% increase from a year earlier. Middle-class workers with families are already moving to North County, and even Temecula, where they can afford homes. But the commute is brutal and could get worse. San Diego does not have mass transit like San Francisco or New York that can move large numbers of people, especially from North County. Many San Diego homeowners of late are basking in newfound property-value gains and the replenishment of equity lost since the recession. However, those gains could be short-lived if businesses can’t attract enough workers. If interest rates rise, the pool of potential home buyers will fall.

More and more people are moving to urban environments, such as downtown, Golden Hill, and North Park. This displaces lower-income residents in those areas due to the rising housing prices and rent. Millennials want denser living, so we’re seeing lowerincome folks heading out to the suburbs, where there are no services. Just think, 20 years from now, will downtown be home to high-rises, craft beer pubs, restaurants, and a certain football stadium? ¢
