I
’ve always had this strange relationship with time – more specifically, time passing. Of course, I realize that I’m aging each year as I roll past the day that my mother brought me into this world, but I’ve never felt like I was getting any older. I realize that my body is starting to feel older, and for some reason I don’t have as much hair as I once did (according to the mean photos that people have taken of me showing the back of my head). On the other hand, it’s definitely easier to grow facial hair these days – even those special blonde ones that my wife insists are actually grey, but that’s an ongoing debate and still inconclusive. Forget the physical aspects of age. I still feel young mentally – most of the time. While enjoying every last day as I approach the threshold of 43 years, I suddenly felt old this morning. It was an unexpected feeling, but I suppose it should have been predictable. Today, my youngest, my little sweet pea, my little Audrey Becca jumped onto a bus and headed out to sixth grade camp with her friends and classmates. This makes me sad. No, not because I have separation anxiety or I’m afraid that she will be homesick (I’m sure she is going to have a blast and everyone will be just fine – parents included). I’m sad because the years have gone by way too fast. My wife and I have a junior in college. She went to sixth grade camp nine years ago. Our seventh grade son went to camp last year. I was fine with both going. Today is different. Today is a humbling reminder that my little girl is charging life at a faster pace than I am prepared for. I remember some advice that my uncle once told me when talking about life and raising kids. He said, “Don’t blink... because you are going to open your eyes one day and your kids are going to be all grown up. It goes by fast. Cherish every minute.” Derrick Breaux I MUST HAVE BLINKED! Make no mistake about it, I’m Publisher trying not to blink again any time soon. I will take that great advice and do my best to cherish every minute moving forward. Thanks for being a reader of 92128 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. babysitter, black belt, boy scout JAKE ANDERSON’S DIVERSE SKILLS EARN HIM RECOGNITION IN MANY AREAS by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Spark Photography

ancho Bernardo’s student star, Jake Anderson, is a young man of many talents. From his babysitting certification and black belt in Taekwondo to his musical and medical aspirations, Jake has accomplished quite a bit in his first 14 years of life and is looking forward to much more. A freshman at Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS), Jake acknowledges his favorite part of school is the band program, the RB Royal Regiment. “I am very involved in the RBHS marching band where I play the clarinet,” Jake said. His interest in the instrument began years earlier. “I chose to play the clarinet in the fifth grade after finding success playing

the recorder as a fourth grader in music class,” he explained. While the performances are important, Jake shared, “The real appeal of the RB Royal Regiment isn’t the championship victories or public appearances, but the connections created by students within their instrument sections.” The sense of love and support within his band family has inspired Jake to stay involved with music for as long as he can. Another major commitment in Jake’s life is Boy Scouts. He is a Life Scout with Troop 680 and a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s national honor society. As a scout, Jake has volunteered over 85 hours for local projects, including the Friends of the Library for the Rancho Bernardo Library and planting flags at Fort Rosecrans on Memorial Day. “In addition to these events, I spent eight weeks volunteering and playing with the Special Olympics softball team during middle school,” Jake shared. Academically, Jake’s favorite subjects are English and science. He plans to attend UC Berkeley or UCSD and earn a degree in chemistry or biology. Jake is then looking forward to attending medical school. “My dream job is to become an anesthesiologist and help patients through surgery,” he said. For all his hard work, Jake looks towards inspirations both internationally and locally. Elon Musk tops his list of celebrity inspirations. “Closer to home, however, I look up to my band directors Duane Otani and Zachary Christy, from whom I’ve learned how to work hard and commit to something you love.”

Celebrating STEM
FESTIVAL OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING RETURNS TO SAN DIEGO
B
iocom Institute will host its ninth annual Expo Day and Festival of Science and Engineering Week from March 4 through 12. The events throughout the week allow people of all ages to explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities, and dynamic speakers. Expo Day, the official kick-off celebration, will take place at Petco Park on Saturday, March 4. Festival week continues with eight days of learning, interaction, and behind-the-scenes opportunities for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, adults, and families alike to ignite their passion for STEM education. Most events are free and open to the public. For the second year, the festival will include the STEM in Your Backyard series in various communities throughout San Diego, including
events in Vista, Barrio Logan, Chula Vista, Alpine, and Lakeside. In addition to interactive experiments and activities, this series includes a student project showcase and exhibits from local industry research institutions and universities, all designed to engage the entire family in STEM. Festival week nears its end on Saturday, March 11 with Super STEM Saturday at California State University San Marcos. The popular event will feature rocket launches, build-a-robot stations, model displays, scientist chats, and an obstacle course. A program of the Biocom Institute and presented by Illumina Foundation, the festival aims to encourage and engage kids in STEM, and to increase our region’s reputation of being a leader in the science industry. More than 70,000 people are expected to participate this year. For more information go to www.lovestemsd.org. ¢

Michigan. Jennifer, a San Diego native, worked as a flight attendant for eight years before transitioning to her position as stay-at-home mom. Their two sons are active in sports. Ryan, a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School, plays lacrosse year-round. Hunter, a sophomore, plays lacrosse and football. “Both of them do what typical teenagers do in their spare time, eat and sleep,” Jennifer shared. “When they are not training for their individual sports, they also enjoy spending time with their friends.” The family is active in both the school and the community. “Through Mike’s work, we raise money and donate our time to the USO, Ronald McDonald House, and March of Dimes,” Jennifer shared. She has also served on the board of the Rancho Bernardo Gridiron Club, the boosters for the high school football team. Both Jennifer and Mike are very active with their sons’ sports teams. The Fridolfses’ focus on sports is a family activity. “The whole family is addicted to working out,” Jennifer said. But what they admit is a bit surprising is their love for junk food. “We all have crazy sweet tooths.” Mike admitted, “If Jennifer bakes it, it won’t even make it through the night without being eaten.” Whether at the gym or snacking on sweets, the most important factor is the family time. “As a family, we enjoy spending time together,” Jennifer said.

TRAVELING CHILDREN’S THEATER TO RECRUIT LOCAL CAST
P
oway OnStage, through its Arts in Education Initiative, will present the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s (MCT) production of Treasure Island and a free week-long theater camp for children in March. The MCT tour team will arrive with a set, lights, costumes, props, and makeup, everything it takes to put on a play, except a cast. The team will hold an open audition on Monday, March 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. to cast 50 to 60 local students ages five to 18 to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week, Monday through Friday from 4 to 8:30 p.m., culminating in two public performances on Saturday, March 18 at 3 and 7 p.m. In addition to producing this unique musical theater experience for children in the community, the Arts in Education Initiative sponsors a variety of theater arts workshops taught by MCT directors and actors to over 350 elementary students in the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). In-classroom workshop topics range from improv acting to stage makeup. This year, workshops will be held from March 14 to 16 at local PUSD elementary schools.

Choosing the Right Primary Care Physician (pcp) N
ow is the time of year when many people are deciding who will be their Primary Care Physician, or PCP. Most health insurance plans require a person to appoint a PCP—usually a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)—to oversee their overall health and wellness needs. The three main categories of PCPs include: ✔ Family Physicians:Trained to treat patients of all ages ✔ Pediatricians: Specialists in the medical needs of
babies, children and adolescents
✔ Internists: Focused on the needs of adults.
Think of your PCP as your advocate in the healthcare system. Except in the case of an emergency, your PCP is generally your initial point of contact for your healthcare needs. He/she will 1) diagnose and treat common conditions; 2) educate you on making healthy lifestyle changes and other preventive measures;
3) assess urgent problems and direct you to appropriate care; 4) coordinate the referral process if you need to see a specialist. Many people have a long-term relationship with their PCP and refer to their PCP as “my doctor” or “our family physician.” Having a doctor-patient relationship built on trust and confidence is one of the keys to receiving quality health care. As you’re looking at different doctors in your health insurance provider directory, think about what you want in a health partnership. Does the doctor’s office need to be close to work or home? Can you make early morning, evening or weekend appointments? Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? Would you prefer someone who is similar in age or of the same gender? For quality care, make sure you choose the right PCP for your unique healthcare needs.

hannon Clark is dedicated to helping children learn and grow in 92128. She earned a degree in psychology with an emphasis in child development at San Diego State, and stayed for a fifth year for her teaching credential; she was an elementary school teacher in Ramona before having kids of her own. Now, she’s a substitute teacher with Poway Unified School District, vice president of the Shoal Creek Elementary PTA, and leader of Girl Scout Troop 2361 for girls in grades K-3. “I became involved by attending my first PTA meeting when my children started kindergarten,” she said. Over the years, that involvement has included roles as volunteer coordinator, treasurer, yearbook, and hospitality chairs. Her current focus is bringing assemblies to the school. She added, “My biggest accomplishment is working with the Girl Scouts. I love it when the girls get to try new things. It brings excitement to them, which makes me smile.” She explained that all the girls in her troop joined for different reasons, which end up bringing them all closer

We do all of those things.” Shannon and the girls are currently excited for cookie season, which continues through March 12. She’s also on the lookout for new opportunities for the troop to explore. “We love for community volunteers to open up their business and let us see what you do,” she said. “Next month we will tour the 911 dispatch center and find out what happens when we make a 911 call.” She and her husband Marc have spent the past 14 years in Carmel Mountain Ranch, now with eight-year-old Hannah and 14-year-old twins Ethan and Dylan. She considers herself a Southern California girl at heart. “I dreamed of attending college in San Diego and enjoying the beaches, palm trees, and sunny weather. The bonus was meeting my husband and getting to stay here after college,” she shared. “Now I get to live, work, and play where I always dreamed of living.”

other leaders, organizations, and our community partners to choose “good” and share the benefits of developing strong character in our future leaders and provide opportunities for our community to make a positive difference in their life and the lives of others. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF YOUR ROLE? Being a role model for my son and daughter; seeing tangible results of BSA programs that have changed attitudes, transformed lives, and restored hope in other individual Scouts, homes, and throughout our community. WHAT ARE THE LONG-TERM AND SHORT-TERM GOALS FOR THE DISTRICT? Our long-term goals are to grow membership by attracting and retaining Scouting members; sufficiently and sustainably fund Scouting operations; flawlessly deliver Scouting programs to our members; and improve our community through impactful community service projects. Our short-term goals include: 1. Increase membership through the implementation of a diversity and inclusion program with an eye towards reaching “hard to reach” communities. 2. Increase financial contributions by improving the visibility of the work and projects Scouts are doing; to make the over 100,000 hours of community service provided by Scouts and their families more tangible to all. WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION FOR A BOY TO JOIN BOY SCOUTS? WHAT ARE SOME UNIQUE EXPERIENCES OR OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE THROUGH SCOUTING? “Some boys avoid obstacles. Scouts overcome them.” The life lessons learned in Scouting form a foundation to embrace opportunity and overcome obstacles in life. Scouting is a fun and safe environment to learn and grow while developing interests and skills. The programs deliver character-building and development centered around good morals and values. Scouting is a chance to learn life skills that help Scouts be successful adults and contributing members of society. Most of all, it’s fun and exciting, with outdoor experiences boys love like hiking, camping, mountain biking, exploring, and more. HOW DOES ONE JOIN A TROOP? A celebration of Scouting held every four years for Scouts, Venturers, volunteers, and staff from across the nation. The 2017 theme, “Live Scouting’s Adventure,” speaks both to Scouting’s century-old tradition of creating adventures that develop young people into the leaders of tomorrow and to the developing adventures of the next century of Scouting. The Scout Fair on April 8 is an opportunity for all San Diego communities to explore a day of Scouting activities. Held at Qualcomm Stadium, this annual event has an expected attendance of 7,500 to 10,000. A LOVE 0F LEARNING GROWS HERE Peaceful, Spacious Environment at Country Montessori School
Y
our lifelong love of learning begins at Country Montessori School (CMS) – where children experience an authentic Montessori education in a peaceful, spacious environment. Here, children successfully transition from concrete activities to advanced abstract thinking. Highly respected in North San Diego for over 25 years and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CMS is a full member of the American Montessori Society. Country Montessori educates children ages 2.5 to 11 with an individualized, comprehensive curriculum that allows them to thrive. “CMS develops intellectual, responsible, caring members of the community and world,” said Adela Corrales, Head of School. She oversees daily operations at the school, a nonprofit organization governed by a parent/ teacher board of directors.
“Students are a part of a community, not just a school.” The school provides additional instruction in music, Spanish, art, physical education, and technology. “The key Montessori philosophy is fostering the children’s enthusiasm for learning,” said Adela. Montessori learning materials are designed to invite discovery and grow with the child, containing multiple levels of challenge. “We are a collaborative community where older students serve as role models for our younger students,” said Adela. “Students are a part of a community, not just a school. believe in educating the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and social.” Small class sizes and a team teaching approach help students feel comfortable and engaged. Elementary classes have just 10 students per teacher and early childhood classes have 12 students per teacher. Each classroom is led by two to four AMScredentialed teachers, so students can draw from the strengths of multiple teachers. The school raised funds at its recent auction and dinner at the Maderas Golf Club. The funds raised from this event will be used over the summer to install new shade structures in the playground areas. There will also be new wooden playground equipment such as a boat, and other play structures. “It is very important to continue to upgrade our playground materials, as outside activity is a very important part of the development of the whole child,” said Adela. Every year the music instructor produces a Spring Fling, which was this year titled “School of Rock” at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. All students performed together in the opening and closing numbers, including the school song “I Belong.” The remainder of the program was individual classes performing in both song and dance routines. “This was one of the best days of the year,” said a parent new to the school. “We have also been delighted to hear of recent awards given to alumni at local private and public schools such as Frances Parker and Meadowbrook Academy,” added Adela. “We celebrate their ongoing successes.” For parents who are looking for the best learning environment for their child, a personal

tour of the school is highly recommended. “We encourage families to see first-hand what the CMS experience is all about,” said Adela. “Call us for a tour and we will personally show you around the campus, introduce you to staff, and answer any question you might have about the Montessori program, our curriculum, and our students’ success.” ¢

ED BROWN CENTER TO HOST HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENT
T
he Ed Brown Center for Active Adults will present historical impressionist Peter M. Small portraying George Washington on Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. as part of the Sunday Afternoon @ 3:00 entertainment series. Peter will talk about Washington’s life, separating facts from myths – from chopping down the cherry tree to the struggle for independence and the foundation of our republic. Peter first developed his program with costumed presentations while he was teaching social studies in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., which became memorable and enjoyable lessons for his students. For decades, Peter has performed for a wide range of audiences across the country, including those at the Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Herbert Hoover, and George Bush Presidential Libraries; on the History Channel; at Port Huron, Michigan’s Thomas Edison Festival; and on KTTV-TV’s Midday
Sunday in Los Angeles. For 10 years he was the presenter at Knott’s Berry Farm’s Thomas Edison Workshop. He was a performing artist with The Performing Tree of Los Angeles, and is currently an adjunct instructor for the Older Adults Program at the North Orange County Community College District. Founded in 1989, the Ed Brown Center provides programs and opportunities to mature adults interested in maximizing and enjoying the best years of their lives. The center offers more than 35 different classes and activities each week that stimulate both the body and the mind. The Sunday Afternoon @ 3:00 program offers a variety of family entertainment, from musical performances to dramatic presentations. Tickets for Peter Small’s presentation are available at the center at $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years old and under. Learn more at www.edbrowncenter.org. ¢

ocated at the Northeast corner of Carmel Mountain and Black Mountain Roads, Carmel Mountain Dental Care (CMDC) was established in the early 1980s. In 2008, H. Jonathan Lee, DMD, acquired the practice upon retirement of the founding doctors. Prior to CMDC, Dr. Lee practiced dentistry in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, shortly after receiving his doctorate at Boston University. His love for San Diego started earlier during his undergraduate studies at UCSD. Dr. Lee had a vision to bring the small-town, relational dentistry he experienced back to San Diego, and Rancho Peñasquitos was the perfect fit. A feeling of small town hospitality is evident from the moment you walk in the office. New patients are always given a tour, hot and cold beverages are available during the short wait, and all of the treatment rooms are equipped with TVs, blankets, music, and coloring materials for younger visitors – or for any visitors who want to color! Dr. Lee’s patients seemed to appreciate his approach as CMDC has grown over the years. Patient Linda B. shared, “It’s tough to mix top-notch professionalism with warmth. Dr. Lee and his staff have pulled it off! This office makes going to the dentist a pleasure!” In 2015, Dr. Marisa Lee joined the growing practice to help maintain the high standard
of care and attention patients have come to expect. Dr. Lee and Dr. Marisa both rely on the rest of the CMDC team comprised of four dental assistants, six hygienists, and six office team members. An orthodontist (for braces) and endodontist (for root canals) are also available for patients. While the back office team is treating and educating patients about their oral health, the front office team is diligently scheduling appointments, and helping patients navigate the complexities of dental insurance and understand the costs of treatment. For those without insurance, CMDC is an exclusive provider of Quality Dental Plan, a dental savings plan which can provide all the necessary routine dental services for less than $300 per year (a family of four is only $880 per year) as well as significant discounts on additional treatment. Whether it’s taking the time to explain a treatment plan or calling a dental insurance company to verify benefits, Carmel Mountain Dental Care goes the extra mile for their patients and prospective patients. This is why so many in Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch, and neighboring communities consider Carmel Mountain Dental Care their family dentist. One of Dr. Lee’s goals for CMDC is to give back to the communities

which have accepted him so warmly over the years. CMDC sponsors the Rancho Peñasquitos and 4S Ranch Little Leagues, Rancho Family YMCA, and other local organizations. Dr. Lee expressed, “Carmel Mountain Dental Care is not just about treating teeth. We are caring people caring for people.”

LITTLE ITALY Get a Taste of Italy Right Here in San Diego BY SAMANTHA EDWARDS
N
estled along the waterfront in the northwest district of downtown, between the bustling San Diego International Airport and the historic Gaslamp Quarter, is a charming city section with a European flair. San Diego’s Little Italy was founded in the 1920s by Italian immigrant families, who built the area into a prominent fishing neighborhood during the height of the tuna industry on the West Coast. Despite suffering nearly 30 years of decline by the mid-'90s, Little Italy not only still exists today – it is a growing and thriving part of the San Diego cityscape. In fact, it has been recognized as one of the top Little Italy neighborhoods in the nation. And perhaps now more than ever, Little Italy is alive with community spirit. The streets of the 48-square-block neighborhood are studded with patio cafes, public piazzas, markets, authentic restaurants, boutiques, art displays, and other attractions that pay tribute to its rich Italian heritage. The area has been managed by the Little Italy Association of San Diego since 1996, an effort that has proven successful in preserving Little Italy as a stable ethnic business and residential community. This spring the association will complete the largest project of its kind: Piazza della Famiglia, a 10,000-square-foot European-style plaza intended to become the new
heart of Little Italy. The piazza will serve as a central community gathering place to host the area's various activities including farmers markets, concerts, cultural events, and more. So grab your family and friends, head down south, and explore all there is to do in this delightful cultural landmark. ¢

O
ne in four women is subjected to some form of sexual harassment throughout her lifetime, and 65 percent of women say they have encountered some form of street harassment. As more women and young girls are becoming aware of this issue, many are actively trying to find solutions to lower the chances of women being harmed. With this in mind, Drew Ferrer, a senior at RB High, decided to use her knowledge and experience in martial arts and karate to begin a club at school where female students can talk about and learn about how to protect themselves, and one
another, in dangerous situations. Ferrer started Kajukenbo, which has included Karate, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Kenpo, Kung Fu, and Chinese Boxing, at age six at her local Boys & Girls Club. From there, she competed in martial arts tournaments winning first place in forms and weapons, earned her Junior Black Belt at age 16 and First-Degree Black Belt in 2015, and later earned her qualifications to teach other students. Because this club may have had some conflicts of interest, Ferrer made it clear it would be a non-contact and explanation club only. To follow the school guidelines, Ferrer plans to explain
different types of techniques to help women stay safe while they are alone and demonstrate them herself without letting others in the club participate on school grounds. While the girls cannot practice on each other on campus, Ferrer can still demonstrate and explain different maneuvers and tactics to use when you are approached by someone unknown. This involves explaining the importance of balance, learning your assailant’s weak spots, learning to avoid being grabbed or punched, and gaining the power and intensity within your strikes. Eventually, Ferrer hopes the club will be about more than just
self-defense and wants to use it to show girls to be comfortable in their own skin. Femininity and physical power are often seen in society and by young girls as being in contention, but Ferrer hopes to show that it is possible to be confident in your ability to fight back. “I want to teach a sort of body-confidence, in which you can be comfortable with yourself doing all kinds of weird kicks and punches because it’s useful in life, and it’s actually fun!” Ferrer said. ¢ JANHAVI CHAFEKAR is a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92128 Magazine.

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H
2017 Real Estate Forecast
T
he San Diego housing market continues to soar due to low inventory and high buyer demand. Most housing markets in the rest of the state will continue to sizzle in 2017, while most of the country could experience a cooling trend. Mortgage rates will likely hover in the 3.5% range for the short term but could rise above 4% through the first half of 2017. Loan limits could also rise next year in some parts of San Diego county in response to rising home values. This housing market forecast comes from the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), which recently predicted a slight rise in mortgage rates through the end of this year. The MBA expects
the average rate for a 30-year home loan to reach 3.7% by the end of 2016, and to continue rising gradually throughout 2017. Many California cities experienced tremendous price growth over the last few years. But that’s beginning to change. Housing markets across the state are slowing down as demand softens. Affordability is an issue in many of these markets. Buying a home has become cost-prohibitive in many parts of the state, for the majority of residents. In San Diego for example, home prices are expected to rise by just 1.7% over the next 12 months, compared to a gain of 4% over the last year or so, and buyer demand will continue to rise.
