I
n 2008, my wife and I finally jumped onto the social media bandwagon and opened Facebook accounts. To be honest, we were obsessed at first. We spent weeks connecting with long-lost friends and setting up our own online lives. It was fun and strange at the same time. We had walked through the doors of the digital social world. But fast-forward nearly a decade, and I’m getting concerned about how some people are treating other people on social media platforms. I am often astounded at the level of rudeness, bullying, racism, and other ill-mannered behavior I regularly witness. It’s becoming more and more difficult to find public postings without a string of comments from people bashing each other. We’ve all heard stories of children being bullied online, and I’m sure we all disavow that type of behavior. So why stop there? I have watched friends, family, and strangers post the craziest comments on social media – things most people would never say in person. This is appalling to me. What are we teaching our kids? Where did it go so wrong? How could a video posting of a high school kid’s amazing touchdown turn into hundreds of racially charged, insulting comments? Have people forgotten basic human decency? Do we no longer care about how people treat each other? How can someone understand the appropriate way to act face-to-face, but then get behind a keyboard and descend into hateful bullying? Don’t get me wrong. I’m an avid supporter of the freedom of speech, but freedom of speech is not freedom from social consequences. When I see people saying some of the hateful and slanderous things that they are saying, it makes me think. Sure, it’s easier to look the other way, but let me ask you a simple question. Would you continue to be friends and regularly hang out with someone that has no problem making Derrick Breaux racially charged or rude comments to people out in public? If Publisher your answer is no, then why are you still friends with them on Facebook? Perhaps it’s time for us all to do some housekeeping on our social media accounts. It’s painless and easy. And there’s a good chance those obnoxious friends won’t even realize you unfriended them. Gotta go! I see a great selfie opportunity about to happen. Thanks for being a part of 92128 Magazine!
All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Beauty From Within
Entrepreneur Natashah Torki Creates Beauty by Embracing Whole Communities by LYDIA COBB | photo by Spark Photography
N
atashah Torki looked forward to coming back home after obtaining her bachelor’s degree at UCLA. The young entrepreneur lives in Sabre Springs, five minutes from Carmel Mountain Ranch where she grew up and graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School. “I love that our community is always evolving and growing,” said Natashah. “It’s never stagnant and it changes with the times.” Born in Eugene, OR, Natashah and her family moved here when she was young. Her dad is a refugee from Iran. Her mom was born in India. “We are Zoroastrian, which is a very ancient Persian religion,” she shared, adding that 200,000 adherents remain in the world. Natashah is the COO of her family-owned Beauty by Dolly, a salon that specializes in eyebrow sculpting and hair removal. She’s been at it for 11 years, first as a browtist, even working during her years at UCLA. Her passion is philanthropy because her business model spreads love. It’s wrapped around the Beauty from Within Initiative. “We started Beauty from Within to hire, train, and employ refugees from all over the world to become one of our amazing browtists,” said Natashah. “The initiative gives refugees an opportunity to learn English and gain a sense of community, all while helping them become independent.” Her heritage has inspired her philanthropy. She explained, “We come from a background that has been persecuted for thousands of years. Being a refugee is very common in our community.” She considers her employees to be amazing people. “They have hopes and dreams of raising their families in safety and with the same opportunities as everyone else,” she added. “All they need is a chance.”

Being an entrepreneur means that Natashah has lots of ideas for branching out, including the expansion underway at Beauty by Dolly. She mentioned she could start five businesses now if she had the time. Her time is also filled with reading. She loves walking with her dog Dexter and enjoys cooking and interior decorating. “I’m always changing up my house,” mentioned Natashah. She’s also changing lives: believing in her mantra that when you look and feel beautiful, you can do beautiful things.

Concerts at the Library
RB LIBRARY CONTINUES TWO UNIQUE CONCERT SERIES
T
he Rancho Bernardo Library will host a number of concerts as part of the Discovery Concert Series and the Chamber Concert Series this fall. The Discovery Concert Series serves to educate the public about different forms of music as well as expand the opportunity for local musicians to perform. San Diego State University senior Eric Dickerson is the October artist, who will demonstrate various aspects of classical guitar technique in his program, “The Art of the Classical Guitar,” on Saturday, Oct. 8. The series continues with pianist and composer Nick Reveles and future members of the San Diego Opera presenting “Opera Exposed” on Satuday, Nov. 12. The Chamber Concert Series, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, is offered as a cultural service to the community. The Camarado Trio will perform on Wednesday, Oct. 26. This ensemble
is dedicated to “presenting invigorating performances of musical masterworks and to creating an inviting and expansive artistic experience for audiences.” Executive Director and flutist Beth Ross-Buckley joins Artistic Director Dana Burnet on piano and Joanna Morrison Pernela on cello, to perform music by various composers like Haydn, Copland, and Piazzolla. The chamber series continues with the Neave Piano Trio, which critics say is one of the finest emerging young chamber ensembles. Their performance will feature Mikhail Veselov on cello, Eri Nakamura on piano, and Anna Williams on violin on Wednesday, Nov. 30. For more information about the Discovery and Chamber Concert Series as well as other upcoming events at the library please visit www.friendsoftheranchobernardolibrary.org. ¢

teven, Winnie, Nathan, and Evan Lee are a busy family that takes full advantage of the perks of living in 92128. The Lee family moved from Newport County, RI, to Bernardo Heights in 2011. They are happy to be surrounded by excellent schools, strong churches, convenient shopping, and many other families. Through their work with Boy Scouts, Westwood PTA, and Maranatha Chapel, Steven and Winnie are dedicated to giving back to the area they love. “We are thankful we can serve in our community and make an impact with friends and neighbors. here, our volunteerism has been rewarding and enriching. We are glad to be active participants in one of the best towns in San Diego County,” said Steven, who is a software manager and principal software engineer at Raytheon. Winnie is a medical director assistant with Proton Center Development Corporation, and as Steven proudly noted, the recipient of the 2016 RB Hats Off Award for her volunteer endeavors at Westwood Elementary. The Lee family is very active in Boy Scouts, and both boys are members of Troop 681 – Nathan, a sixth grader at Bernardo Heights Middle School, as a boy scout and Evan, a third grader at Westwood Elementary, as a cub scout. Steven is assistant cubmaster and pack trainer for Cub Scout Pack 681 and Winnie is membership chair. Steven and Winnie are also co-membership chairs for the San Diego Imperial Council. “Winnie and I were selected to attend a one-week multi-cultural scouting training session at the Philmont Training Center in Raton, NM. We came back excited and focused on helping our Black Mountain/Scripps Mesa district with outreach to untapped markets,” related Steven. Although Steven and Winnie grew up in the Los Angeles area, they lived in New England for a time and still count Boston as one of their favorite cities in the United States. The family enjoys traveling back to New England for visits, as well as traveling to new locations in the United States and abroad. Their family symbol – the compass – reflects the Lees' love for travel. “Each member of the family is a specific direction: N – Nathan, S – Steven, E – Evan and W – Winnie. At the same time, both Nathan and Evan (NE) were born in the Northeast, while Winnie and I were raised in the Southwest,” revealed Steven.

Flu Season’s Coming – Be Prepared! www.graybill.org
by AERON WICKES, M.D.
I
n Southern California, flu season typically starts around the holidays and lasts through winter. But don’t wait for the first outbreak – start taking steps now to protect your family from the flu.
1. Get vaccinated. Since it takes about two weeks to build up enough antibodies to protect against the flu, September and October are the ideal time to get a flu shot. Note: For the 2016-2017 flu season, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of only injectable flu shots. 2. Wash your hands often with soap and warm or hot water. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
need medical attention or other necessities. 5. Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of the tissue in the trash then wash your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. 6. Boost your immune system by making sure you eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep each night.
Interesting Flu Facts • It’s possible to spread the flu without knowing it. You can be infected with the flu for 24 hours before symptoms show up.
3. Clean and disinfect surfaces that may be contaminated with flu germs or are frequently touched, such as desks, doorknobs, remote controls, etc.
• Antibiotics are ineffective against the flu since they only treat bacterial infections, while the flu is caused by a virus.
4. Avoid close contact with sick people. If you’re the one who’s sick, try to stay at home at least 24 hours after your fever is gone unless you
• The flu vaccine changes every year to protect against the viruses projected to be the most common.

STUDENT STAR AMY ATHING THRIVES ON COMPETITION AND COMMUNITY
F
ive years ago, a friend’s horseback-themed birthday party changed Amy Athing’s life. “I was hooked,” said Amy, now 12 years old. “I focus all of my free time on horseback riding, and my dream is to compete nationally.” She keeps up with equestrian accomplishments in the news and on social media, drawing inspiration from world-famous horseback riders like Beezie Madden, Kent Farrington, and Reed Kessler. Amy backs up her passion and aspirations with hard work and dedication. She rides five days a week with Venture Farms, Inc. at Poway Equestrian Center, and she competes frequently in the hunter/jumper discipline – along with the other half of her dynamic

partnership. “My pony Rascal and I make a great team,” she noted. Outside the arena, Amy enjoys making friends and exploring her community. She’s lived in Carmel Mountain Ranch since she was two years old. “It is amazing here,” she said. “I have a wonderful friend named Jenna that lives right next to me. We’ve known each other since we were toddlers!” She’s in seventh grade at Bernardo Heights Middle School, where she appreciates the chance to socialize – “I have a lovely squad that I eat lunch with and hang out with,” she shared – and the caring, understanding teachers. “My favorite subject is science because my teacher is so nice,” she said. “She allows me to learn a lot in a fun way.” Since science comes so easily to her, Amy plans on pursuing a career in the field of chemistry, though she hasn’t yet decided what specific jobs she’s aiming for. She’s already thinking about how to get where she wants to go, and top universities on her list include Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Louis Obispo. On the home front, Amy enjoy cooking and spending time with her family – from her parents, Sonja and William, to their menagerie of pets. In addition to Rascal, Amy has a cat named Honey, rabbits named Emma and Peyton, and a betta fish named Starlord. From the saddle to the science lab, Amy Athing is determined to turn her dreams into reality – and she’ll do it all with her friends and family at her side.

RB Chorale Begins New Season
Bus Route Restored to BHMS After more than 10 years without bus service, the Bernardo Heights Middle School (BHMS) bus returned to High Country West and surrounding areas. Luanne Lohr, parent to a seventh grader, and Teresa Backer, parent to a Turtleback Elementary fifth grader, were among those spearheading the effort to get the bus back. After 15 years of bus service to BHMS and Rancho Bernardo High School, the service was stopped as a result of PUSD budget cuts following the 2005 opening of Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch. The reinstatement of the bus route is a victory for parents of BHMS students, who say the campus is too far for their middle school children to walk or ride bikes to, especially considering the I-15 freeway separates their homes from the campus. For more information about how to sign up for the bus or other details, contact Teresa Backer at vip@backerrealtygroup.com or PUSD Transportation Operations Supervisor Terri Ambrezewicz at 858-748-0010 ext. 2055. 34 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • October | November 2016
The RB Chorale is embarking upon its 42nd Holiday Season, and is now in rehearsals for the holiday shows to be held at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts in December. The Chorale is still open to new members through Oct. 6. Male tenors and basses are especially needed. Women are welcome as well, but there are a limited number of openings in the soprano and alto sections. No auditions are necessary; all you need is a desire to have fun and make beautiful music. Rehearsals began on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Painted Rock Elementary School in Poway. New members should arrive at 6:30 p.m. to register and fill out a membership application. All experience levels are welcome. The RB Chorale is comprised of over 100 volunteer singers, dancers, and support staff bringing the gift of song to the community. RBHS Volunteer of the Year
PowPAC Productions
The Poway Unified School District has announced its distinguished 2016 Volunteers of the Year: Garry Burgess (Black Mountain Middle School), Stan Kim (Painted Rock Elementary School), and Audrey Frank (Rancho Bernardo High School). Audrey is the driving force behind the RBHS Music Boosters Association, serving as the executive board president for the past six years. She works year-round to keep the music boosters thriving and is always available to respond and address the 275 families involved in the instrumental music program. During Audrey’s time as president, the organization faced many hurdles, especially related to funding. Under Audrey’s leadership, however, the music boosters continued to provide the best support possible for the music program. She constantly inspires and drives the parents who volunteer for the music program through her dedication and hard work. She has also been involved with the swimming parent organization, assisting her husband with their Boy Scout troop, and volunteering at church. Learn more at www.rbmusic.org/boosters.
PowPAC, Poway’s community theater, is presenting two plays in the remainder of the year. Dangerous Obsession, which is currently running through Oct. 16, is a psycho-thriller written by N.J. Crisp. In the story, John watches Sally from outside the window of her home. He knocks on the window and she lets him in, failing to notice when he seals off the room, trapping her and her husband inside. With its plot twists, shocks, and tension, Dangerous Obsession is sure to keep the audience engaged to the very last scene. PowPAC will also present its holiday show, Christmas Belles, from Nov. 11 to Dec. 18. The comedic play follows the lives of three feuding sisters in the South as they attempt to produce a successful church Christmas program despite uncooperative cast members and leaked family secrets. Performances for both plays are on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. For more information and tickets visit www.powpac.org.
Kids Free in October Step out and explore the depths of the ocean or the far reaches of outer space with the family this fall with Kids Free in October. The annual program, created by the San Diego Museum Council and presented by ScholarShare, provides free admission for kids ages 12 and under at 40 cultural, arts, and science museums throughout San Diego County. Participating museums include the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Coronado Museum of History and Art, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, and the USS Midway Museum, among many others. One coupon is good for up to two free child admissions with one full-price paid adult admission. You will need one coupon per museum visit. In addition, two children 12 years old and under can ride the Metropolitan Transit System for free with a paid adult on Saturdays and Sundays. Children under five years old always ride free with adults. For more information visit www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org/kidsfree.
Coastal Cleanup Day I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) engaged over 7,500 volunteers at 114 cleanup sites simultaneously at this year’s Coastal Cleanup Day in mid-September. During the three-hour event, volunteers worked to restore the health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment by removing more than 150,000 pounds of trash and pollutants. Volunteers also removed graffiti, replaced invasive plants with water-wise native plants, and performed general park maintenance. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of hundreds of cleanups hosted by ILACSD, receiving attention from several of San Diego’s elected officials who visited cleanup sites in their respective districts. For over 60 years, ILACSD has been San Diego’s most influential advocate for sustainability, serving as an environmental catalyst, awakening passion, inspiring action, and empowering everyone to create a lasting, positive impact on the local environment. For information about how to get involved visit www.cleansd.org.
Soroptimist Club Changes Name
As of July 1 of this year, Soroptimist International of Rancho Bernardo is operating under a new name: Soroptimist International of North San Diego (SINSD). The name change was granted by Soroptimist International of the Americas in order to expand the geographical area for future members from Del Sur, 4S Ranch, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Carmel Valley. Soroptimist is a global women’s organization that works to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. SINSD is committed to advocating for women and girls in the local community and throughout the world. Among its many projects is Transitional Housing, an 18-month program that moves families from dependency and abuse to a safe, self-sustaining lifestyle by providing housing, financial help, and mentoring to survivors of domestic violence and their children. SINSD also supports a number of other programs, including Live Your Dream, Leap to Confidence, Palomar Health Lifeline, Palomar Health Foundation, and REBOOT Workshops. supports Rancho Bernardo. Through fundraising and memberships, the RBCF directs resources to other organizations making a difference right here in RB. Last year, over 19 organizations received over $70,000 in grants from the RBCF. There’s more, too – from the Pathway of Pride at Webb Lake Park to the Hats Off to Volunteers recognition night, the RBCF is all about celebrating philanthropy in our community.

The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation Is Proud to Give Back in 92128
Q&A with
Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation President Debbie Kurth
WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE RANCHO BERNARDO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (RBCF)? The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation (RBCF), a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1988. The RBCF provides assistance to the Rancho Bernardo community through funding for projects and programs focused on senior services, youth activities, recreation, promotion of the arts, educational enhancement, civic enhancement, and community protection. The foundation has established a permanent, growing endowment fund to meet Rancho Bernardo’s changing priorities and emerging needs. HOW HAS THE FOUNDATION GROWN AND EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? Since inception, the foundation was based solely on a fundraising model. However, two years ago the board decided to adopt the membership model used by the other eight community foundations of the San Diego Foundation. Individuals donate $500 annually to become members. Each year as members, they participate in choosing the focus for the grant process and vote for the applications they deem the most valuable to the Rancho Bernardo Community. Corporate membership is also available. IS THE RBCF ASSOCIATED WITH A LARGER UMBRELLA ORGANIZATION? Yes, in 1996, the RBCF became a proud affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, which invests our endowment, assists with managing our grant application process, manages our funds, and supports our events. However, the RBCF is completely run by a group of dedicated RB volunteers. All of the money raised is used only to benefit Rancho Bernardo.
The use of the funds and how the grants are distributed is totally determined by the RBCF board of directors and its members. WHO HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND EXECUTION OF THE RBCF? The foundation was initially started by a number of individuals including: Woody and Dorothy Beard, Harold and Penny Dokmo, Ted Gaasch, Eileen Haag, Larry and Joyce McIntyre, Matt McLaughlin, Don McLean, Bob and Gena McMillin, and Bob and Darlene Wells. In more recent years, others who have contributed are Nick Anastastopulos, Dave Brooks, Steve Dematteo, Debbie Kurth, Scott Lawn, Kevin Martin, Brian McLean, and Jeff Shea. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE WITH THE RBCF? I have been involved with the RBCF for several years and began my two-year term as president in January of this year. The foundation is a wonderful organization and I am
fortunate to be a part of this group. It is so satisfying to help raise money for funding and then be able to grant this money to various worthy organizations within the Rancho Bernardo community to help them prosper and watch them meet their goals. WHAT IS THE FOUNDATION’S MISSION? The foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in the Rancho Bernardo community by providing leadership for effective philanthropy, building enduring assets, and by promoting community solutions that advance the common good. HOW DOES THE FOUNDATION GO ABOUT INVESTING DONATED FUNDS? The San Diego Foundation Board of Governors’ Investment Committee drives asset management and investment growth to meet the RBCF fund objectives. The principal balance of the endowment fund is not spent,

which protects the earning power and enables donors and nonprofit organizations to continuously donate earnings or grow endowments by reinvesting them in the principal. The RBCF Board of Directors advises the use for both the endowment and non-endowment funds. WHAT ARE SOME PAST EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS FUNDED BY THE RBCF? A great example of a past project centers around the 2007 RB fires. In November 2007, the RBCF brought together community and business leaders to assess the recovery and rebuilding needs of RB. Out of this meeting, RB United was formed and now serves as a coalition dedicated to meeting the needs of fire survivors within and around Rancho Bernardo. At the same time, the RB Community Foundation asked the San Diego Foundation Regional Disaster Fund Board to create a fund that would enable individuals and corporations to send money specifically to meet the needs of Rancho Bernardo. Individuals and corporations contributed more than $200,000 to the Rancho Bernardo After-the-Fires Fund. In addition, the RBCF received $100,000 from the San Diego Foundation Regional Disaster Fund Board to allocate in a manner the community deems appropriate.
The luncheon is one of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation’s signature events and raises money for its community grants program and Rancho Bernardo’s endowment fund. This is an excellent opportunity for both individuals and businesses to be sponsors for the foundation and receive recognition for their generosity. Last year, more than $70,000 was presented to local nonprofit organizations. HOW HAS THE THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?
Another project the foundation recently played an important role in was saving Webb Lake. The RBCF collaborated with the Rancho Bernardo Business Association to assist in raising funds to dig a well to supply water for the lake. The project was started by Scott Lawn and the foundation became the nonprofit sponsor needed to establish the fund. Donations were received from individuals and businesses throughout the community, along with grants through our elected officials. HOW CAN LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS APPLY FOR GRANTS FROM THE RBCF? Grants are given out on an annual basis at our Thanksgiving Luncheon. Local organizations may apply online through the San Diego Foundation website. An informational meeting is held in April where the guidelines are presented by the grants committee. Applications must be completed online and are due in May. Site visits are conducted in June with all finalists. In September, the grants committee and members review the information and the final selections are made. Once the checks are distributed, the start date for program funding is December. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE UPCOMING THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON? The Thanksgiving Luncheon has become an annual tradition and is considered by locals to be the official kick-off for the holiday season. This festive occasion takes place the Tuesday before Thanksgiving at the Rancho Bernardo Inn and this year’s date is Tuesday, Nov. 22. The luncheon not only serves as a fitting occasion for our community to be thankful for the wonderful place we both live and work, but also is the setting for our grants ceremony. This year’s master of ceremonies will be Assembly member Brian Maienschein. The event typically draws between 400 to 500 community members.

It was originally a Rancho Bernardo Chamber of Commerce event brought to Rancho Bernardo by Larry Foster, who was involved in a similar project in Chicago. After the RB Chamber was dissolved, the event was given to the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation as a perfect celebration for the awarding of community grants. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS OR FUNDRAISERS? The Pathway of Pride is the signature fundraiser for the foundation’s endowment fund. This ceremony recognizes those who contribute $1,000 or more to the foundation. Each donor or family member is honored by an engraved granite commemorative plaque installed on the walkway around Webb Lake Park. The event was held on Aug. 25 this year. Councilmember Mark Kersey has presided as master of ceremonies for the past several years. Donors received certificates of appreciation from both his office and the office of Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. To date, we have 278 plaques along the walkway. The RBCF Cruise is an event that combines a relaxing vacation with charitable giving. In collaboration with local travel agent Maureen Rouleau, the RB Community Foundation receives a portion of the proceeds from each cabin sold on this annual cruise. The next cruise will be in April 2017 to Cabo San Lucas. The Hats Off to Volunteers is an annual RBCF event that recognizes volunteers from various local organizations. Deserving individuals from each group are nominated for their contribution to the RB community and are recognized in a special Volunteer of the Year Ceremony. It is incredible to have all of these groups together at the same time. Last year, we paid tribute to over 70 volunteers.

IF YOU COULD GRANT THE COMMUNITY ONE WISH, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
In addition to the Common Good endowment and non-endowment funds that are advised by the RBCF Board of Directors, there are other funds that were set up with a specific purpose for the RB community. These funds are the Kathryn Staab Fund, Rancho Bernardo Emergency Reserve Fund, Rancho Bernardo Symphony on the Green Fund, and the Rancho Bernardo/Smith Scholarship.
I would wish that Rancho Bernardo remains the wonderful community it is today and continues to thrive for many, many years to come. I can’t think of a better place to live. It has that small-town feel, but with immense charm and sophistication.

His practice focuses on the art of cosmetic, functional, implant, and restorative dentistry for children and adults. “It has been my wish since I was 12 years old to have a beautiful smile,” wrote Rosemary, a patient grateful for her new teeth. Dr. Howard focuses on advanced continuing education and thoroughly researches state-of-the-art technologies that he considers in dental treatment for his patients. Attention to detail matters. Dr. Howard and staff take care to fully explain a procedure. Full service dental care includes preventive, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry, laser dentistry, teeth whitening, periodontal, TMJ and anti-snoring therapies, and implants and veneers. “I can say without exception,” wrote Dave, a patient, “that Dr. Howard’s personalized service and genuine care for his patients make him the best dentist I have ever been treated by.” Dr. Howard is on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and is also an Editorial Review Board Member of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry, among many other distinctions. wo filmmakers from San Diego recently screened their documentary film USS Indianapolis: The Legacy at the GI Film Festival San Diego. Sara Vladic attended Rancho Bernardo High School, graduated from Pepperdine University, and currently lives in San Marcos. Melanie Capacia Johnson attended Mt. Carmel High School, graduated from SDSU, and currently lives in Oceanside. When Sara was 13, she Sara Vladic heard about the tragedy of the USS Indianapolis, a U.S. Navy ship that was struck by two torpedoes in WWII. Of the 1,196 men aboard, about 900 made it into the water, where they faced exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks. By the time help arrived almost five days later, only 317 survived. After graduating from Pepperdine, Sara contacted a survivor’s group who invited her to their reunions. When Sara began conducting

interviews in 2005, there were about 100 survivors. There are now only 23, ranging in age from 89 to 94. Sara and Melanie grew very close to the men over time. Sara decided to use the interview footage they collected over the last 10 years to allow the survivors to tell their story in their own words. At the 71st Annual USS Indianapolis Survivors Reunion in July, Sara was made an Honorary Survivor, and the finished film was shown to the Melanie Capacia Johnson remaining survivors and their families. “The reception was overwhelmingly fantastic, and there’s nothing like hearing the words from the survivors that ‘we got it right’ and they’re ‘so proud of us for telling their true story’,” Sara said. “It was the icing on the cake for this project that we already felt honored just to be part of.” For tickets and more information visit www.gifilmfestivalsd.org. ¢

to “Retire with Confidence.” “One of the most rewarding feelings as a Certified Financial Planner® is to witness a client come to the realization that they have achieved financial security,” Michael said.
Michael Lucia and Associates recognize the difference between a wealth accumulation strategy and a wealth distribution strategy. “This is where other financial advisors and individuals may fall short. They attempt to use the same accumulation techniques that were used while creating their wealth and fail to change their strategy while distributing income for retirement. This is potentially a huge mistake,” Michael proclaimed. “We provide education and advice with the shared purpose of reaching our clients’ financial goals and objectives.” Michael grew up in Poway playing Little League baseball and Pop Warner football. He attended Poway High School, where he continued to succeed both academically and athletically. He went on to continue his dreams and had the opportunity to play football at California State Long beach for Hall of Fame professional coach George Allen. He is now father to two wonderful children, Vincenzo and Sophia. His wife, Jackie, travels across the country supporting their daughter’s ballet aspirations, while he coaches their son’s elite travel baseball team. “I have really enjoyed being involved locally over the years, and I have a deep love for this community,” Michael said. “I hope that my children will feel the same admiration and continue the Lucia legacy.” Michael is a proud member of the North San Diego Business Chamber. Michael Lucia attributes his success to the strong relationships he has built with his clients. While Michael J. Lucia and Associates has continued to grow, most of that growth comes from favorable introductions. This means that his clients are confident in his abilities and hold him in high regard while they continue to introduce him to those they care about. “A sound strategy during retirement can be the difference between retiring with confidence and wondering if you will outlive your nest egg.” ¢

our lifelong love of learning begins at Country Montessori School (CMS) – where children experience an authentic Montessori education in a peaceful, spacious environment. Here, children successfully transition from concrete activities to advanced abstract thinking. Highly respected in North San Diego for over 25 years and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CMS is a full member of the American Montessori Society. Country Montessori educates children ages 2.5 to 11 with an individualized, comprehensive curriculum that allows them to thrive. “CMS develops intellectual, responsible, caring members of the community and world,” said Adela Corrales, Head of School. She oversees daily operations at the school, a nonprofit organization governed by a parent/ teacher board of directors.
“Students are a part of a community, not just a school.” The school provides additional instruction in music, Spanish, art, physical education, and technology. “The key Montessori philosophy is fostering the children’s enthusiasm for learning,” said Adela. Montessori learning materials are designed to invite discovery and grow with the child, containing multiple levels of challenge. “We are a collaborative community where older students serve as role models for our younger students,” said Adela. “Students are a part of a community, not just a school. believe in educating the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and social.” Small class sizes and a team teaching approach help students feel comfortable and engaged. Elementary classes have just 10 students per teacher and early childhood classes have 12 students per teacher. Each classroom is led by two to four AMScredentialed teachers, so students can draw from the strengths of multiple teachers. The school raised funds at its recent auction and dinner at the Maderas Golf Club. The funds raised from this event will be used over the summer to install new shade structures in the playground areas. There will also be new wooden playground equipment such as a boat, and other play structures. “It is very important to continue to upgrade our playground materials, as outside activity is a very important part of the development of the whole child,” said Adela. Every year the music instructor produces a Spring Fling, which was this year titled “School of Rock” at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. All students performed together in the opening and closing numbers, including the school song “I Belong.” The remainder of the program was individual classes performing in both song and dance routines. “This was one of the best days of the year,” said a parent new to the school. “We have also been delighted to hear of recent awards given to alumni at local private and public schools such as Frances Parker and Meadowbrook Academy,” added Adela. “We celebrate their ongoing successes.” For parents who are looking for the best learning environment for their child, a personal

UNLEASHED IN SAN DIEGO
Explore the City With Your Pooch For a Doggone Good Time
T
by SHYANNE LOPEZ
he only thing San Diegans might enjoy more than beaches, burritos, and brews is enjoying all of those things with man's best friend. Let's face it, it's tough to stay indoors in a city like San Diego. It's even tougher to leave your dog behind to miss out on the adventure. Luckily, America's Finest City might also be one of America's most dog-friendly cities. From North County to downtown, local dog owners are constantly discovering outdoor and indoor destinations where they can be accompanied by their four-legged friend. So, if you're looking to have some fun this fall with your pup, grab the leash and check out some of the dog-friendly activities we've put together – they'll have Fido's tail wagging in no time.
SAND AND SURF
HOWLING GOOD HIKES
BREWS AND BITES
MEETUPS FOR PUPS
Beach days are not just for us – our canine companions love the waves too! For San Diego dog owners, there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches to choose from. From Del Mar Dog Beach to Coronado to the "Original Dog Beach" in Ocean Beach, there is no shortage of beaches to let your dog off-leash for some fun in the sun. Want to make your beach trip even more memorable? Sign you and your pup up for some surf or stand up paddle boarding lessons!
A key to keeping your dog happy and healthy is exercise. Not only does it keep dogs in peak physical condition but it also keeps their minds active. Many owners, especially those without a yard, know all too well the consequences of a bored dog. So get outside and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of local trails with your furry friend. Balboa Park, San Elijo Lagoon, and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve are just some of the dog-friendly local hiking spots.
Tired from an afternoon of hiking or beach-going? Grab you and your pup some refreshments at any of the dog-friendly breweries throughout San Diego. Relax with a cold one while your dog enjoys some attention and treats of their own. Mission Brewery, Mother Earth Brew Co., and Bagby Beer Company are among some of the most dog-loving brew houses. Not interested in beer? San Diego boasts a variety of dog-friendly restaurants and cafés – just take your pick.
One of the most fun aspects of being a dog owner is interacting and making friends with other owners and their dogs. While this can easily be done at a dog park, one of the most sure-fire ways to get some doggie play-dates scheduled is by attending a dog meetup. Meetups can vary in design from breed-specific to muttinclusive to hiking or Pokémon GO dog walkers, so be sure to choose the meetup that is right for you and your dog. Look for meetups in your area at www.meetup.com.

RB High Switches to Quarter System
F
or the 2016-2017 school year, RB High has transitioned to a quarter system, after using a semester schedule since the school’s beginning in 1990. Under the old semester schedule, students could take at most 12 classes a year (or six a semester). With the new quarter system, students have the opportunity to take 16 classes a year (or four a quarter) which gives them more flexibility to take off-rolls or be a part of in-school electives. James Lee, a senior at RB High, is a member of the varsity football team, and he feels that the new schedule allows him to
manage his time better and be more productive. “It gives me time to come home and eat, take a power nap, and complete homework during my 90-minute off roll.” Lee said. “It also forces me to focus on my homework and finish studying within that small time period.” RB High’s principal Dave LeMaster believes that the new schedule has allowed teachers to spend more time on their individual students. “Teachers like the fact that they have a little more time and get to see their students every day,” LeMaster said. “In the schedule last year, it was rushed. Having 88-minute periods every day allows
them to spend more time getting to know their kids.” Since teachers have half as many classes at a time, they can spend more time with their students and give them more individual attention. LeMaster also believes that the shorter grading periods and faster classes have forced students to be more proactive and focused. “Some of the teachers feel like students are really on top of their grades and assignments and are more concerned about falling behind,” LeMaster said. Though classes are much faster under the new schedule, students only need to focus on two or three academic
classes rather than four or more. While the overwhelming response from students has been positive, LeMaster still realizes there is some work to do before the new system works for everybody. “It is more challenging and more homework for students who are in four academic classes who also need to balance extracurriculars,” LeMaster said. “Students in three academic classes like it more.” ¢

Housing Market, Still Booming! by DAN CONWAY
T
he housing market boom in San Diego County is good news for home sellers but not so much for first-time home buyers and renters. In recent years, the U.S. housing market has recovered from the financial crisis but the supply is so limited in San Diego, prices are skyrocketing. If you already own a home, good news for you since it will be worth more. But if you’re a first-time buyer, it has become even harder to afford a home in San Diego. When houses go on the market, many times they’re sold within days of
going on the MLS, and a lot of times they don’t even make it to the MLS. Sellers are in the driver’s seat, as buyers contend with fierce competition and very fast-moving markets. Demand is sky-high and the number of homes sold is rising, even as inventory of homes for sale keeps falling. Since people are having a more difficult time purchasing homes, they are forced to rent, which drives up rent prices around the county. In some cases, renting can be the same price or even more than a mortgage. “While affordability keeps some people out of the housing market, tight inventory is keeping others out. About 24 percent of San Diego County renters, who have strong credit scores and high incomes, can afford to buy a home but aren’t jumping into the market because of intense competition among qualified buyers for fewer and fewer properties,” says a recent study from real estate website Zillow. Dan Conway & Associates and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty are so very

Is Water Treatment Really Necessary? ASK THE PLUMBER! Brockmire Plumbing Services Inc., d.b.a. BPS Plumbing & Drains, has been bringing expertise in plumbing and water treatment to San Diego County for more than 20 years. Did you know that the water in most homes has more chlorine than a pool? In addition, many water districts use a combination of chlorine and ammonia to disinfect the water. This combination has been known to be more aggressive and can cause pinhole leaks in copper pipes. Your water is safer, but your home is at risk of potential water damage because of these chemicals.
Did you know that hard water causes scale build-up, and scale build-up causes problems that result in wasted dollars? The estimated energy cost for running a 40-gallon electric hot water heater is $450 a year. A scale build-up of just 3/8 of an inch gobbles up 55 percent more energy. That’s an additional $247 or more each year to produce the same amount of hot water! A soft water system may be right for you.
DAMAGE TO PLUMBING FROM CHLORINE
DAMAGE TO PLUMBING FROM HARD WATER SCALE
Bottled water is expensive, environmentally unfriendly, inconvenient, and doesn’t address the many other household uses for water such as bathing, cooking, and brushing your teeth. Call BPS Plumbing & Drains today to discover how we can solve your water problems.

“California Smartscape is truly fantastic. From start to finish they were extremely professional in every sense of the word. We were in serious need of a creative mind to help us with our front & backyard. We have 2 young children and a dog, but we also entertain our friends and family. So the idea was to come up with an environment that could achieve this and maximize the usable space both children & adults could enjoy.” - Stephen H.

BECAUSE A COACH
CARED
DON’T GO IT ALONE Mark was a self-proclaimed “total couch potato.” For 10 years, he tried and failed at traditional gyms. “I was never sure how much weight to lift or how many reps to do.” He tried personal trainers, but some weren’t serious, while others pushed him too hard, making him feel even worse. Koko FitClub was the perfect fit: friendly, inviting and “never smells like a gym,” he loved getting coaching with every workout. “At Koko, the equipment is computerized like no place else. They know how much weight you should lift, how many reps to do, and even monitor pace so you lift at the right speed. My FitCoach put me on a program based on my age, goals and strength level, and coaches me whenever I need him, on my schedule. It’s so much better than a personal trainer.”
AT KOKO FITCLUB YOU NEVER HAVE TO GO IT ALONE. We believe in fitness for everyone, but we build it just for you. With our digital coaching technology and amazing FitCoaches, at Koko, you never have to go it alone.
In less than 2 months with Koko, Mark lost 2 inches off his waistline and 14 pounds of body weight. “I feel great and have more energy than ever.” We are so proud of Mark and his results!
