T

his issue of 92128 Magazine contains a very special annual real estate section (see page 34). There are many elements that go into building a community, and active local real estate professionals are definitely one of the key components. They are often a part of the community themselves, walking their kids to school or sitting next to us at soccer games. Many of them sponsor school programs and/or donate time and money to local charities and organizations. But perhaps the most important thing is that they are working with us on what is considered to be the single largest investment of our lives – buying or selling our homes. While we often see the faces of our local real estate celebrities in the pages of this magazine, on the real estate signs around town, on the ballpark fences, or even on the shopping carts watching us as we make the dreadful decision to go with paper or plastic, we wanted to take it one step further. Real estate is definitely hyper-local, and this real estate issue gives you a glimpse into the individual “movers and shakers” of our local real estate industry. The intention of the real estate issue is to create a personal introduction to the actual person – not just the Realtor® – that dedicates their career to overseeing our local real estate market. I hope that you enjoy getting to know your local Realtors®. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses. They are constantly working in front of and behind the Derrick Breaux scenes to keep their fingers on the real estate market pulse and Publisher see that our communities continue to move forward.

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

he local community has a lot to look forward to at the upcoming Spirit of the Fourth celebration, held every year on July 4. The event is held primarily at Webb Park, with other activities taking place throughout the community. There’s something for everyone, from the community fair to a comedy show to the Freedom Run 5K and one-mile walk. The RB Idol contest invites community members of all ages to showcase their vocal talents. The Larry Himmel Memorial Patriotic Pet Contest honors Larry Himmel for his years emceeing the event, and continues to celebrate Rancho Bernardo’s most stylish, patriotic pets. Dogs, cats, rabbits, and even

birds are all welcome. Another unique RB tradition is the Rancho Bernardo Business Association’s Annual Bob Wells Rubber Ducky Race, where the fastest rubber ducky wins at Webb Lake. The community fair officially opens at 9 a.m., and events continue throughout the day. The Fourth of July Parade kicks off at 3:30 p.m., and the traditional fireworks

celebration, held at Bernardo Heights Middle School, begins at 9 p.m. The gates open with food and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. Spirit of the Fourth is a nonprofit group, and relies on sponsors and community involvement to put on the festivities every year. Goal-Driven Kalena Tano Performs Well as a Dancer and an Editor by LINDA FRABL | photo by Spark Photography

K

alena Tano, who lives in the High Country West neighborhood, is a very busy 4.0 GPA senior at Rancho Bernardo High School. As the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, the Silver Spur, Kalena said, “The newspaper is so similar to a business in its organization and its teamwork. Being the editor-in-chief has improved my writing a ton and helped me be more outgoing as a growing person, because I’ve had to be confident with my work being published for the whole school to see.” Another way for Kalena to outwardly express her inner confidence is through dance. As a pre-professional ballet dancer at Southern California Ballet in Carmel Mountain Ranch, Kalena attends dance classes six days a week for a total of 20 hours per week. In addition, she teaches ballet to some of the younger students, and regularly performs in dance outreach programs at schools, nursing homes, street fairs, and libraries. At the moment Kalena is finishing up her Cecchetti Diploma, which is the equivalent of a professional dance exam. She also plans to pursue

a higher Cecchetti certification so that she can continue teaching dance. Discussing how dance has improved her overall work ethic, Kalena commented, “Performing on stage is definitely one of my favorite parts about dancing, but my best memories have come from working hard with my friends in rehearsals. Without work there is no end product, so working hard has always been my favorite part of reaching my goals.” As for her future aspirations, Kalena will either attend University of California San Diego to study Dance and Literature, or she’ll attend Texas Ballet Theater for its Professional Division Training program, which involves a six-day-a-week intensive dance training. Kalena sighed, “These are two amazing offers, and it’s hard to choose!” Grateful for her solid educational foundation, Kalena especially cherished her English/Literature classes. She elaborated, “Literature helps to capture the mood and problems of specific time periods, but also holds themes which are timelessly applicable.” She plans to continue studying literature in college because it would help her transition into education, law, or business, three potential career paths of interest to Kalena. But whatever she chooses to do, Kalena added, “I don’t really care how small a salary I’m paid as long as I love what I do!” 

LOCAL SOROPTIMISTS PRODUCE SUCCESSFUL HIGH TEA EVENT

N

early 400 guests attended the annual Soroptimist High Tea, sponsored by the clubs of Poway and North San Diego, at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar this year. Cindy Spilman from the Poway club and Nancy Eastman from the North San Diego club cochaired the event. Carlo Cecchetto from CBS8 served as emcee and auctioneer. Entertainment was provided by twotime Grammy Award-winning Kamau Kenyatta and jazz singer Daneen Wilbur, whose poignant rendition of “Lean on Me” moved the room to tears. Through the combination of sponsors, ticket sales, live and silent auctions, and flash sales, the event grossed approximately $120,000. Though it is up to each club to determine which programs they would like to support, both clubs will use the majority of the event proceeds for their Transitional Housing Program, which provides apartments for survivors of

domestic violence and their children. The clubs furnish each apartment with used furniture, stock the pantry with food, and cover a portion of the rent. Proceeds from the tea are also used for other programs benefiting women and girls, such as the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award and Dream It Be It. As part of the worldwide Soroptimist International organization, the Poway and North San Diego clubs work to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment, advancing public awareness for women’s issues, and celebrating their contributions and achievements both locally and globally. WINERY PROFILE

G

uests of all ages can celebrate the past while enjoying the present at the historic, family-owned and operated Bernardo Winery. Established in 1889, the winery has been in the Rizzo family for three generations – they’ve owned the winery since 1927. “It’s a step back in time to a Mediterranean village, where people can relax and take in the old ways,” shared Marketing Director Samantha Nawrocki. “Often, new guests are surprised by the rustic buildings, old world feel, and tranquility, after they drive through suburbia to get here.” The grounds are home to a unique collection of village shops, with something for everyone: home and garden goods, chocolates, handbags and accessories, clothing, art gallery and classroom, clay studio, theater, jewelry, and flowers. “One unique addition is a craft coffee roaster, Manzanita Roasting Company, that roasts fresh coffee beans,” said Samantha. Relax for a sit-down meal at Café Merlot, or enjoy an espresso drink and a sandwich at V’s Coffee Shop. And of course, there’s the wine itself. “We specialize in wines that really suit the terroir here in San Diego,” Samantha explained. “Syrah, Petite Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Albarino, Chardonnay, Malbec… We have a great assortment of wines that can either pair great with a meal or just be enjoyed on our tasting room patio with a nice cheese board from V’s.” There’s always something to look forward to, with new wines released throughout the year. Bernardo Winery offers winemaker dinners and pairing events, and a wine club is currently in the works. Artwalks return May 19 through September, with live music and food trucks until 9 p.m. on Fridays. That old world atmosphere is the perfect backdrop for a wide array of community, private, and corporate events. The winery’s venues are famous for weddings, but the possibilities are endless. “We host everything from corporate mixers, wine blendings, birthdays, anniversaries, and family get-togethers to, yes, memorials,” said Samantha. “There are so many events to celebrate, and weddings are just one of them.” With a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine, savor the next chapter of history at the Bernardo Winery. ¢ 20 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2017

Bernardo High School, where mom Kimberly has been teaching Spanish since 1991. Junior Patxi plays varsity and club soccer, is president of the Fight Against Hunger Club, Ryan’s Best Buddy, works at Chick-fil-A, and is a soccer referee. Sophomore Nikolas is in drumline, wrestles for RBHS, and is event coordinator for the Fight Against Hunger Club’s food packing event. Freshman Amaia plays soccer on the high school team, Color Guard for the marching band, and competes in Winter Guard. She is a Best Buddy for a girl with special needs, and is also a soccer referee. All three attended a Poway Unified School District Dual Immersion program at Valley Elementary, becoming bilingual and biliterate. The program was put to great use when they joined Kim in Spain for eight months, as she built an exchange program for high school students. The students in this program travel to Spain for three weeks, are immersed in language and culture, and upon their return host the student whose family they lived with while they were there. “This has created tremendous cross-cultural awareness,” the Rizzos explained, “not only for the students but for their families.” The Rizzos love to volunteer. Through the Fight Against Hunger Club/Friends Family Community Connection, they participate once per month in homeless outreach downtown at The Salvation Army. They also help once a month at a food pantry in Poway, make mats for the homeless from plastic bags, and help with the Thanksgiving Food Drive and Stamp Out Hunger. Patxi recently went to Haiti on a missions trip, and Frank and Nikolas will be going to Mexico in May to build houses. Kim is the Fight Against Hunger Advisor and leads programs/fundraising events. The Fight Against Hunger Club hosted its first food packing event at RBHS on April 30. “The club has raised over $10,000 in two years,” the family cheered. “The students are amazing!” 

C R E AT I V E CHALLENGES Local Author Dennis Macaraeg Sets His Latest Novel in San Diego by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Spark Photography

92128

resident Dennis Macaraeg did not always dream of becoming a writer. In fact, he admitted, “It was the farthest thing from my mind.” At the age of 16, he immigrated with his family to the U.S. from the Philippines. Dennis graduated high school and went on to earn a degree from San Diego State University. He wanted to become a school teacher, but as he explained, “Life had a different plan for me.” After college, Dennis began working in the healthcare field. It was during this time when he needed to drive a lot for work that he started listening to audiobooks. After listening to many stories, he decided he needed to write his own. His first book was inspired by a mix of the genres he was listening to – thrillers, love stories, history, and travel books – and a life-changing experience he had on a backpacking trip in the Philippines in 1993. Five years after that initial idea, Dennis published Somewhere in the Shallow Sea. Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies: Favorite Local Spots:

Dennis Macaraeg Writer Sabre Springs since 2003 Photography, hiking, reading Seaport Village, Coronado, and Del Mar

His newest novel, Somewhere in San Diego, is a story set a little closer to home. Keeping with the blend of genres, Dennis shared, “The book is a thriller, a love story mixed in with travelogue, and a bit of San Diego history.” Dennis knows local readers will connect with the familiar scenes in the story – Seaport Village, Coronado Island, Gaslamp Quarter, Old Town, and more. And for the reader who has never visited San Diego, Dennis assured, “She would be transported to the sights and sounds we experience every day.” Writing fiction is not easy work. For his latest book, Dennis worked hard to ensure his details of San Diego were vivid and realistic. Working with the plot is another challenge. Dennis acknowledged, “Plotting on how I will execute my plan is also difficult because every little change in the plot affects the overall direction of the story.” But the challenges of writing do not deter Dennis. He is continuously drawn to storytelling because he can create his own worlds and characters. He will also begin podcasting soon, starting with a suspense and love story that will be told through 5- to 10-minute podcasts posted every week. 

St. Michael’s Academic Decathlon Win

St. Michael’s School earned first place overall out of 21 schools at the 21st Annual San Diego Diocese Academic Junior High Decathlon Competition in March, qualifying them to compete in the State Academic Junior High Decathlon in Sacramento in April. “It was a joy for me to work with these students and to see them rewarded for their hard work and dedication to learning,” said Academic Decathlon Coach Malini Paye. “The best part was watching them build lasting friendships and learn important teamwork lessons through this experience.” In addition to qualifying for the State competition, the St. Michael’s team earned first place in the team logic competition and second place in the team super quiz competition. Six students also earned awards in their individual events: Stacy Widyono (first place in science), Hayden Jackson (first place in literature), Treasa Paul (third place in religion), Paola Simi (fourth place in social studies), Natasha Tavares (fourth place in writing), and Pierre Paye (fifth place in current events). Once in Sacramento, the team continued to succeed. They placed first in Super Quiz; Stacy Widyono again placed first in science; and eighth grader Jane Cox placed second in fine arts.

NCSFA Scholarship Winner Rancho Bernardo High School student Sooyoung Kim was one of six recipients of the 2017 North County Society of Fine Arts (NCSFA) scholarships. NCSFA awards scholarships each year to deserving North County high school seniors who intend to pursue degrees in the visual art fields. Sooyoung is an international student from Korea with incredible creativity and artistic talent. She wants to follow in her art professor parents’ footsteps and teach art while developing her talents as a studio artist. She has been accepted to University of California colleges and ArtCenter College of Design in L.A. for the fall. NCSFA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering appreciation and education of fine art in the community. In order to be considered for the scholarship, students must meet the requirements, complete the written application, and be interviewed by the selection committee. A total of $4,000 was divided among the winners this year. Learn more at www.ncsfa.org.

Inaugural Earth Day Fair The Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s (RBCC) first annual Earth Day Fair was a success. Approximately 300 community members and 27 vendors attended the event, which also featured raffle items and a kid’s craft center. Children had the opportunity to make a variety of crafts from recycled materials including bug catchers, bird feeders, and colorful paper leaves. Proceeds from the event were donated to an earth-friendly charitable organization. RBCC is a group of elected community volunteers who work to provide updated information on issues specifically affecting Rancho Bernardo in order to preserve and enhance the unique quality of life in the community. The council acts as an advisory board to the City of San Diego on issues such as public safety, maintenance assessment, traffic and transportation, government relations, utility issues, code and compliance issues, signage issues, and more. Voices for Children Voices for Children (VFC) and other organizations across the country recognized National Foster Care Month in May, which aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by children in foster care and acknowledge the dedication of the individuals, families, and communities that support them. More than 10,000 children spend time in the foster care system each year in Riverside and San Diego Counties. Since 1980, VFC has served foster children in San Diego by providing them with Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers. Following training provided by VFC, CASA volunteers are matched with a child or sibling group. CASAs get to know the child, the professionals on their case, and act as advocates for the child’s best interest. More than 300 children are currently on the VFC waiting list for a CASA. VFC is raising funds to move as many children as possible off the waiting list and under the care of a CASA volunteer. There are two primary ways to get involved with this effort: sign up to become a CASA volunteer or donate to VFC’s spring campaign. For more information visit www.speakupnow.org.

In 1993, Cynthia Elizondo earned her M.B.A. in International Business. She has used the knowledge she gained to start several successful entrepreneurial endeavors, but her true passion has always lain with real estate. So, when she was presented with the opportunity to follow that dream, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Cynthia began working with Halcyon Real Estate Services so that she could help others achieve their dreams of buying and selling their first home, investment property, or simply take the next step on their journey in real estate. A certified negotiation expert, Cynthia knows exactly what it takes to make a successful deal. When representing buyers, Cynthia takes the time to learn exactly what they are looking for in a home, as well as what price they are comfortable with, in order to match them with their ideal property. When representing sellers, she thinks outside the box to negotiate deals with potential buyers, creating a winwin situation for both parties. Cynthia’s expertise especially lies with the residential areas that make up the Poway Unified School District. Growing up in Northern California, Cynthia ultimately found her dream home here in North County, where she raised two children who attended PUSD schools for over 15 years. Utilizing her familiarity with the school district and all it has to offer, Cynthia is able to provide her clients with an extensive knowledge of various schools. Ultimately, she can help clients find a home within the boundaries of the school best suited for them and their children. Following her belief that volunteerism makes for a strong community, Cynthia serves on the board of directors for the Poway Senior Center and the Poway Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers with Soroptimist International of Poway and Poway Real Estate Professionals. As a devout Catholic, Cynthia is also an active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where her husband serves as a deacon. In addition to English, Cynthia is also fluent in Spanish and French. And if you speak the language of wine, she is always happy to regale you with stories of being raised in the Napa Valley.

She worked with us for over 6 months and was very responsive with all of our requests. After we made an offer on a home, she worked with the selling agent, our lender, inspectors, and the title company to make sure the transaction was as smooth as possible. Testimonials: “Exceptional team! They got top dollar for our home. I attribute this to Dan’s team and their selling strategy. As a marketer myself, I understand how Dan created a sense of “scarcity” for our home and that made all the difference. It created a mini bidding war among prospects that drove the price up – $15K extra in our pocket! Dan and his team get my highest recommendation.” – Bill Loeber, Rancho Bernardo Condo Sold in 7 Days for 105.6% of Ask “The Beer Home Team did a phenomenal job marketing and selling our home. We might have been able to save a little on commission with another agent, but the sale price we received more than made up for that. You won’t be sorry if you choose this team of pros.”– Brian and Jennifer Telford, Rancho Bernardo Home Sold in 4 Days for 103.5% of Ask

Diane and Megan Orvis Windermere Homes & Estates When homebuyers and sellers want a comprehensive, hands-on approach, they turn to Diane and Megan Orvis. The dedicated mother-daughter team leverages over 50 years of combined experience – Diane’s been licensed since 1982, and Megan since 1999 – to achieve the best results for their clients. “When our clients hire us, they get us,” Megan said. “They like having the power of two.” Diane and Megan have been Rancho Bernardo residents since 1974 and value their ties to the local community. Megan is a mother of three boys attending Poway Unified schools, and she and Diane both know the important role schools play in our community. They see each sale as an opportunity to give back through their Sales 4 Schools™ program, which Megan founded. “We give back $500 per closing to a local school for all sales involving a school family or one of their referrals,” Megan explained. “Since the inception of the program, we have given back over $15,000 to local schools. Our clients choose the school, not us.” They specialize in residential sales and work primarily with past clients and referrals. Diane holds a CRS designation, Megan is e-Pro certified, and both team members are relocation certified. Their comprehensive knowledge of residential income property and 1031 tax deferred exchanges is a benefit to their clients. “We are often gratified when working with multiple generations within a family,” Megan shared. “It’s exciting to work with families and see their children grow up and become homeowners themselves.”

REALTORS® “When people buy or sell, they examine their lives as they assess their housing needs,” Diane added. “I consider it an honor to be part of that process. It’s very much akin to counseling, which is my background.” She received her masters and post-master degrees in counseling from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Megan attended Loyola Marymont and Cal State Northridge, and has a B.A. in business with an emphasis on marketing.

When marketing for clients, Megan said, “We believe in casting a wide marketing net through our internet presence, while also taking it hyperlocal by utilizing social media. We are a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, using print media, internet, and peer-to-peer networking.” Diane and Megan have a five-star rating on Zillow, with reviews from nearly 40 past clients. They were recognized as one of Windermere’s top teams company-wide for 2016.

Testimonial: “Diane and Megan Orvis are truly wonderful to work with. We bought and sold homes with them. They are very honest, knowledgeable, and professional, while having a personal touch. Whenever we had questions or needs, they would respond any time, day or night. Whenever one was unavailable, the other covered. We would highly recommend this team and will be sure to use them again in the future!” – Angela Lefter

Men: Is it Time for a Tuneup?

Is your car in better shape than you are?

If you’re like most people in Southern California, you rely on your car to get you from point A to point B. So it’s important to keep your car in good condition. Unfortunately, most men aren’t as conscious about maintaining their health. Studies show that men are less likely to schedule an annual physical or get recommended screening services that can detect illnesses early, while they’re easier to treat. The leading causes of death among U.S. males are cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, accidents, and depression and suicide. While we can’t control disease risk factors like age and family history, we can make lifestyle changes that can go a long way towards ensuring a longer and healthier life. Schedule a routine preventive exam with your Primary Care Physician. You wouldn’t skip your car’s scheduled maintenance, would you? During this all-important exam your PCP will • Review your family health history and current health status • Conduct a physical exam • Order additional screening tests if needed • Work with you to develop a plan for better health going forward.

Change your diet. Increase your intake of lean protein, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat more frequent, smaller meals. Cut down on processed carbohydrates such as white breads, pastas, and foods made with added sugars. To reduce your risk of cancer, quit smoking and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke and air pollution. Always use sunscreen when you’re outdoors, regardless of whether your complexion is light or dark or the sky is clear or cloudy. Be sure to choose sunscreen with at least SPF15 and that offers broad spectrum (both UVA and UVB) protection. Reduce your chances of having an accident. Practice safe driving habits and workplace safety, check your home and office for proper lighting and tripping hazards, and avoid excess alcohol or the use of illegal or illicit drugs. Recognize signs of depression and suicide. If you’re constantly feeling any of the following: overwhelmed; sad; unfulfilled; angry; guilty; worthless; pessimistic; hopeless; restless or agitated; that no one cares about you; or that life is not worth living, see your doctor or mental health professional. He or she can work with you to develop a treatment plan that may include various therapies and/or medications. If you’re in crisis, contact a suicide crisis center hotline.

BLUE APPLE RANCH BRINGS AT-RISK ANIMALS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER

F

ounded in 2001 in honor of the late animal lover Toby Wells, the Toby Wells Foundation is a community resource for San Diego’s underserved children and at-risk animals through innovative programs at Blue Apple Ranch (BAR), a 277-acre facility in the western foothills of Ramona. The genesis of BAR was in 2007, when Toby’s parents attended the Kentucky Derby and discovered that many of the losing horses from the race were destined for slaughter. It was then that the family’s mission to save and rehabilitate horses and then connect them with children through specialized programming was born. The horses that reside at Blue Apple today come from a variety of circumstances, often involving abuse and neglect. Many of the youth that BAR serves come from similar backgrounds. Rescued horses arrive at BAR

may 19 – jun 18, 2017

and undergo an assessment to determine if they are candidates for the training program and adoption. Horses that are not adoptable enter the BAR sanctuary, where they are guaranteed a safe home at the ranch for the rest of their lives. Non-sanctuary horses become involved with education programs at the ranch. The Work For It internship program, for example,

is an intensive 18-week program for at-risk teens ages 14 to 18 from San Pasqual Academy or Abraxas Continuation High School. Blue Apple also offers field trip opportunities with scholarships provided to Title 1 schools in the Poway Unified School District, as well as enriching day camp experiences through its partnerships with local YMCA branches. Even further, BAR hosts a number of special events throughout the year aimed at celebrating and honoring local foster children. “The most rewarding part of working at Blue Apple is knowing we make a difference,” said Adrienne Wells Holmes. “Knowing we’ve rescued hundreds of horses and have served thousands of children locally with a positive message of kindness, compassion, and responsibility is life-changing.” Learn more at www.blueappleranch.org. ¢

SURFIN’ SAN DIEGO Catch a Wave at One of the Top Surf Spots This Summer by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

S

and, sunshine, and salty ocean water. There are few things more quintessentially San Diego than hitting the surf at the beach. In fact, San Diego is known for having some world-class surfing spots, and plenty of options for all skill levels. Since beaches can get crowded, especially during the warmer summer months, be sure to get there early enough to stake out your spot and make parking a bit easier too. So grab your board and some sunscreen and check out some of these top local spots to catch the perfect wave!

LA JOLLA SHORES, LA JOLLA BEGINNER/ INTERMEDIATE La Jolla Shores is one of San Diego’s best and most popular beaches. It’s a safe spot for beginners to learn or practice surfing on gentle waves. And it’s great for the whole family – the beach has year-round lifeguard services, good facilities, a parking lot, fire pits, and a children’s playground just across the sidewalk. Several surf schools operate from here as well.

TOURMALINE SURFING PARK, PACIFIC BEACH BEGINNER/ INTERMEDIATE Tourmaline has a history of being a true surf hangout for San Diego locals. The waves are soft and gentle and the beach comes equipped with showers and restrooms. Hop on over to Garnet Ave. after your surf session for a bite to eat while you watch the sun set.

SWAMI’S BEACH, ENCINITAS

BLACK’S BEACH, LA JOLLA

INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED

INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED

Swami’s is an internationally known spot for good surf. A variety of breaks make for high-performance waves for longboard and shortboard surfers. It can be difficult to paddle out here, though, so strong swimming skills are a must.

Black’s is arguably home to San Diego’s best surf. An offshore underwater trench funnels powerful swells into this area, which can be dangerous for inexperienced surfers. Getting to the beach requires a bit of trekking and since Black’s is infamous for its “clothing optional” rule, it might be best to leave the kids home for this one.

LOWER TRESTLES, SAN ONOFRE INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED Lowers, as it’s called, is part of a collection of surfing spots at San Onofre State Beach that sits at the top of San Diego County. It is one of the world’s most high-profile and high-performance spots, often hosting expert and even professional-level surfers. For this reason, Lowers can get crowded and claiming waves can get competitive.

ello, readers of 92128 Magazine! I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Breaux, and I am very excited to be your local real estate connection. I have the privilege to talk real estate with you in this column, so please feel free to contact me with questions, suggestions, or topics of interest. Chances are that your questions or suggestions are on the minds of many other 92128 readers as well. A Little About Myself I am a true native San Diegan – third generation. While I love to visit other places, there’s just no place like home. More specifically, there’s no place like North County! I graduated from Poway High School many years ago and attended Cal State San Marcos. I am married, and we have three wonderful children ages 20, 13, and 11. Our oldest is a junior at CSUSM, and our youngest two kiddos keep us active and on our toes. I have been a Realtor® for 13 years.

I have also been a partner in several businesses, so I have a deep understanding and appreciation for the results that come along with dedication and hard work. Most importantly, I have a passion for working with people – especially with their real estate needs. What to Expect in Each Issue My goal is to deliver relevant information about the local real estate market. In addition to the recent home sales listed below, I will also provide statistical data and market conditions. Real estate transactions are very important life events, and whether you are currently looking to sell, buy, or hold, if you are reading this article, then you likely have an interest in what’s

happening in your area. I will strive to be a source of information for you to rely on. It doesn’t have to be a one-way conversation. I am grateful to be your local real estate connection. Be sure to reach out and say hello! ¢
