Year-Long Golf Event Winners Bernardo Heights Country Club in Rancho Bernardo recently awarded the winners of a year-long golf competition – the couples’ Tournament of Champions. The competition consisted of monthly matches between couples, with points awarded based on how well participants played. Participants with at least 10 points over the course of the year were eligible to compete in the final tournament, held in January. Thirty-two couples were eligible, and 26 participated in the championship match, where the better score between the two partners was counted on every hole.

The winners were Don and Mary Schoch of Rancho Peñasquitos, with a net score of 62. Sabre Springs residents John and Lori Anewalt accumulated the most points over the course of the monthly matches, with a total of 65 points.

St. Michael’s School Presents Footloose St. Michael’s School students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be performing Getting to Know Footloose the Musical. The production tells the story of a teenage boy, Ren, moving from Chicago to a small farming town, where he runs into oppressive local edicts – including a ban on dancing. These strict rules are thanks to the same local preacher whose daughter Ren falls for. Ren convinces his friends to participate in a school dance competition in order to win her over and revolutionize the town.

Local Fundraiser Seeking Sponsors

Soroptimist International of North San Diego (SINSD) and Soroptimist International of Poway (SIP) are currently seeking sponsors for their annual joint fundraising event. March Madness Book Sale The Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library are hosting their March Madness Bag Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. In addition to getting a great deal on books, CDs, and DVDs, this is an opportunity for nonmembers to join the Friends membership program and support their community library. Beautifying Rancho Bernardo San Diego student and artist Kyla Yu-Swanson recently painted a utility box on the northeast corner of Bernardo Center Dr. and Rancho Bernardo Rd. Kyla’s work is inspired by nature and abstract designs. She’s no stranger to community artwork, participating in a community mural project sponsored by the San Diego River Park Foundation and helping design a 60- by 10-foot mural in New York last year. She has also completed projects for Heiva San Diego and KendallFrost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve. Kyla’s art is part of the Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s Utility Box Public Art Project. Summer is the perfect opportunity for your child to learn swimming and tennis or improve their skills. Rancho Arbolitos, the popular private recreational club in Poway, has been providing summer camps for both of these activities for the past 30 years in a friendly, secure setting. The club’s owner, Di Molenaar, proclaimed, “We aim for the kids to have a good time, meet new friends, learn sportsmanship, and improve their swim and tennis skills in a safe environment.”

Fun Sporty Summer Camp Basics

The typical camp is Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but there are also day-to-day drop-off options available. Camps run weekly from June 15 until Aug. 14, and offer tennis-only, swim-only, or a mix of both. Early drop-off and late pick-up are also available to accommodate your family’s schedule. Kids are divided by age and ability, so your child will fit in whether they are a beginner or advanced.

The kids play tennis from 9 to 11 a.m. and have a snack break from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Then the kids get ready for the pool and have free play and swim for 30 minutes until they’re organized into groups for their hourlong swim lesson. Swimming

Swimming is run by Pacific Swim. Camp coaches are CPR, Lifeguard, and USA Swim Coach-Certified, and have many years of swimming and coaching experience. The Pacific Swim Team has been around since 1993. Not only have they won Junior Olympics Championships, but have consistently placed in the top three teams in San Diego for the past 20 years. Tennis

Chira Tennis Academy runs the tennis camps. Its director and founder, Catalin Chira, has been a certified tennis professional for the past 20 years. In 2012, Catalin was awarded the USTPA San Diego Coach of the Year, and he is an USPTA-certified Elite Professional, PTR-certified, and Etchberry-certified (strength, conditioning, and movement in tennis). Summer camps at Studio West are back! These camps offer middle and high school-age students the opportunity to spend a week producing an original recording in the same studio that’s played host to artists such as Blink-182, Lil Wayne, and Arctic Monkeys, just to name a few. With the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. California All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions.

“All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.”

CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions.

Maranatha Christian Schools’ Summer Programs are almost here! The construction of a new state-of-the-art Sports Complex is now complete, and some programs – Speed & Agility and Summer Games, for example – will utilize the new field. “In addition to the sport camps, we will have academic, cooking, art, and many more classes available for a well-rounded summer camp experience,” explained Director of Summer Enrichment Julie Elliott. “More importantly, our summer camps are open to the community.” Ages can range from kindergarten through 12 th grade. Sport camps are taught by Maranatha’s very own varsity coaches. These coaches have led teams to multiple CIF Titles in several sports. Sport camps include Basketball Skills, Volleyball Skills, Mini Cheer, Strength & Conditioning/Speed & Agility, Sport, and Summer Games.

For ages three to six, the preschool division offers three one-week sessions that focus on Summer Olympics, Space, and S.T.E.A.M. Your child can take one week or all three in the summer school program that runs from June 8 to June 26.

Del Norte Hoops Camp is one of the largest-attended camps in North County and has a ratio of no more than 10 players to one experienced coach. The team is excited to host multiple camps for both Biddy Ball and Youth Camps.
