CASH for Your Candy!
As California schools struggle with budget cut backs, Dr. Noel Moser and Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer are offering schools a way to raise money and at the same time save our students from excess sugar by giving them CASH for their CANDY - in a time when fundraising is not just important, but for many schools imperative. Dr. Moser and Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer will give CASH for your CANDY, paying a dollar for each pound of candy surrendered and donating the proceeds to your child’s school. The surrendered candy will be donated to the military troops and the San Diego Rescue Mission. Last year Moser Orthodontics collected over 3,700 pounds of candy and over the six years, they donated over $11,800 to local schools with this fundraiser.

College Bound

believe that milestones account for a great deal of who we are as a person. Some milestones are good. Some are not so good. One might categorize them as achievements, while others see them more as benchmarks in life. When we aren’t in the midst of experiencing a landmark life event, we are usually working our way towards it. Excitement often builds. Anticipation grows as the event gets closer. What was once so far away is now in sight. It’s very rare when a major life event sneaks up on us – but it does happen from time to time (good or bad). This month marks the culmination of a 17-year-long journey. While our family is not alone – thousands of families send their children off to college each year – it certainly feels special and unique to my small family in our corner of the world. Our beautiful and intelligent daughter is college-bound. The same little girl that we taught to ride a bike. The little girl that we began coaching in soccer at the age of four, eventually developing into a speedster that could outrun nearly every opponent down the sideline when given the opportunity. Homework assignments. Board games at the table. Long philosophical discussions about friends, boyfriends, and life in general – whether she wanted to hear what her mother and I had to say or not. We will miss this. We will miss it all. I think I might be somewhat of a selfish person when it comes to family. I don’t apologize for this. On one hand, we want her to go and begin her journey of adulthood and independence – after all, isn’t that the whole point of being a parent? Isn’t that our job? Yes, I am selfish. We will miss the comfort and joy of seeing her around the house on a daily basis. We will miss having groups of her friends (some going all the way back to early elementary school) hanging out around the house. We will miss knowing that she is safe and sound in her bedroom. We will even miss watching her sit on the couch and speed-text what appears to be dozens of people at once. We might even miss some of the sibling bickering that inevitably takes place between the younger kiddos and her. But we are very proud of her. We are excited for her. A big life event is upon her. We will help her move into her new dorm this week. As always, we will very much be a part our little girl’s new journey that she is starting. Although she will still be close to home, she will still have her independence and get the full college experience by living on campus. This is something that we wanted for her. To our daughter Ashley (a few bits of advice): Go get ‘em. Challenge yourself. Believe in yourself. Learn as much as you can, then learn more. Simply show up – it’s more than half the battle. Always finish what you start. Be your own best friend. Live with integrity. Most importantly, cherish the moment. P.S. We lightheartedly keep telling her that she can’t bring her laundry home on the weekends (they have laundry facilities in the dorms). But truth be told, doing a couple of loads of laundry on the weekends is a very small price to pay for us to ensure that she comes back home to visit regularly.

MARTIN STEELE, OWNER OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITE, THE DELI-STOP, HAS MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN 92129 by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
“M
y father and brother owned 7-Eleven’s and I learned a lot about business from them,” recalled Martin Steele, owner of PQ’s well-known sports pub, The Deli Stop. Martin’s knowledge in business, coupled with his education in advertising and arts, and his passion for sports, is what led him to start The Deli Stop in 1987. Today the eatery, which is still at its original location in Rancho Peñasquitos Town Center, has been named Best Deli of the Year by San Diego Weekly Magazine, and has even been called a PQ icon. Over the years, Martin has formed a strong connection to the community. “I have met so many wonderful PQ residents over the years and I will never forget the loyal support and friendships I have made,” said Martin. His ties to 92129 have encouraged him to give back – taking part in “hundreds” of fundraisers for schools, sport teams, and local charities. “It has been my privilege to do whatever I can to give back to a community that has given so much to my family and me,” noted Martin.
12 • 92129Magazine.com • October | November 2014
Having been involved with the Rancho Peñasquitos Little League since 1997 as manager, coach, and chief umpire, Martin has received recognition from the local baseball community. “I was the umpire in chief for over ten years and now I oversee the Juniors Division, umpiring, scheduling, and more,” explained Martin. “I am also a District 32 umpire working tournament games and all-star games.” When he isn’t busy running The Deli Stop or volunteering, Martin enjoys fantasy football and baseball, and taking small vacations with his wife of twenty-four years, Sandy, and their two sons, Austin (age 21) and Dylan (age 18). He also loves music. “My oldest son Austin’s band Supergroupie was signed to a local record label and that keeps me entertained,” said Martin. As for his future plans for The Deli Stop, Martin replied, “[I’m] just keeping my business up to date and always striving to improve. I just signed a new lease and will take life day by day.” ¢

:::: PQ COUNCIL CONNECTION
What’s New in
PQ?
by MICHELLE O’CONNOR-RATCLIFF Special to 92129 Magazine
There’s always something going on in our vibrant community. Here are just a couple things that we wouldn’t want you to miss:
NOV. 4 ELECTION Election season is here and we want to make sure our residents are informed and active in exercising our right to vote. Our recently sponsored Poway Unified School Board candidate forum on Sept. 22 highlighted just one of the very important races on the November ballot. That ballot will be lengthy, with lots of statewide offices at the top, giving way to our more local offices, including Congress, State Assembly, City Council, and School Board. Please educate yourself so that you can vote knowledgably all the way down the ballot. After all, “it’s your money; it’s your children’s education; it’s your job; they’re your highways; it’s your neighborhood; and if you don’t vote, you’re putting control of your world into the hands of someone else… and you have no idea where those hands have been.”
K-12 ESSAY CONTEST For those community members who aren’t quite old enough to vote, we’ve got an exercise in civic engagement for you too! The Town Council, in partnership with 92129 Magazine, is proud to present our second annual “Growing Up PQ” essay contest. K through 12 students are invited to submit essays on the theme “My Peñasquitos Playground” for a chance to win cash prizes and have your essay published in this magazine. We urge writers to think broadly about “playgrounds” as anywhere people go to do enjoyable things. What do you love to do in PQ and where do you do it? Write about it! Find more information at www.rpcouncil.com/essaycontest. Thank you for reading this column and staying informed. PQ is stronger because of people like you.

BASKETBALL BRILLIANCE ALI ENGELHARDT SHOWS HER SENSATIONAL SKILLS ON THE BASKETBALL COURT by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
A
s a 17-year-old senior at Mt. Carmel High School, Ali Engelhardt has happily resided in Rancho Peñasquitos all her life. She admitted, “I like living here because it’s such a closeknit community. I feel like I know almost everyone who lives here, even if they don’t go to my high school.” That may be because Ali is a well-known name in her neighborhood and beyond, thanks to her sensational skills on the basketball court. Three years ago Ali played well enough to be the only freshman on her high school girls’ basketball team, and this year Ali is her team’s varsity captain.

Ali has already amassed numerous accolades for her basketball proficiency. She has been named the Union-Tribune Athlete of the Week and Athlete of the Month, and the Mt. Carmel Athlete of the Year, and has twice been honored as the Most Valuable Player for the girls varsity basketball team. She has even been bestowed the Palomar League Player of the Year title. In addition, Ali surpassed 1,000 rebounds last year and is on her way to topping 2,000 total points, ranking her as one of the all-time leaders in San Diego girls basketball. Citing her older brother, Evan, as a role model, Ali originally started playing basketball “because I wanted to be more like him,” she recalled, adding, “his work ethic and positive outlook on everything is what inspires me the most.” Ali is also encouraged on by the faculty at her school, and she claimed, “The staff has school spirit and attends all the sporting events; I can look over during a basketball game and see my English teacher in the stands, so that’s pretty cool!” In the future, Ali would like to travel the world, own her own physical therapy business, and “have a big family… and a dog!” When she isn’t focused on playing basketball, Ali indulges in her other passions, including softball, volleyball, piano, skiing and reading. Proclaiming that English is her favorite school subject, Ali mused, “With writing, you can put your own spin on anything you do. Whereas with a math problem, everyone’s work is the same, but when you’re writing an essay, everyone’s work is different and unique to them.” Ali has already proven that she can put her own spin on something different and unique for herself, thanks to her brilliant basketball abilities. ¢

WESTVIEW HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE PASSIONATELY PURSUES HER DREAMS photo by NICO MARKS
W
estview High School graduate Hannah Renee started singing at the age of 2. She recorded her first song when she was only 10 and produced her first EP in Toronto, Canada at age 16. For Hannah, singing is not only a passion, but a universal medium of artistic expression that brings people together. “I want to share my experiences with as many people as possible and connect with my audience. I want to hear their feedback and see how [my music] moved them,” Hannah shared. Hannah’s relationship with music started with her family. “I was always surrounded by music from a young age,” Hannah explained. Her uncle is a music producer in Canada, and Hannah would write songs and produce music with him whenever her family visited him. Hannah auditioned for American Idol when she was 7, citing Kelly Clarkson’s audition as inspirational, and later auditioned for The Voice. There she met someone who co-wrote for artist Justin James. Through this connection Hannah met the music producer Tim Feehan. Hannah pursued this opportunity, and after a month, Tim agreed to set up an interview with her. It was an incredible experience for Hannah. Hannah’s ambition did not stop there. She is continuing to follow her dreams and is hard at work songwriting, researching, and performing. “There’s no turning back from this,” she stated. “You know something is your passion when you no longer fear the future of it. I’m grateful for all of this.” Hannah expressed that her music is sort of a hybrid genre of pop, indie, country, and R&B, which she is fond of as it has something for everyone. She just released her album “Feels Like Home” on iTunes. It can be accessed online at www.itunes.com/hannahrenee.

hen Jon and Pam Burnard moved to the Crestmont neighborhood of Rancho Peñasquitos in 1996, the couple was looking for an area with houses close to nature, an excellent school district, and a strong sense of community. In 2002, the family, which now included twins Christy and Kevin, moved a mile and a half away to the Ridgeview neighborhood where they reside today. According to Jon, Christy and Kevin were sad to leave their Crestmont home, so he sweetened the deal by building a playhouse in the backyard of the new house. “I’m from England and the promised playhouse morphed into a

three-story castle with unique features. It wasn’t just used when the kids were young – it was the site of many high school Nerf battles and was even a haunted castle for Halloween,” revealed Jon with a chuckle. The fun times in the family’s backyard are sure to be related to new friends and acquaintances as the twins embark on their latest adventure this fall, with Christy attending UC Davis as a design major and Kevin attending UC Santa Barbara and majoring in film. Christy and Kevin graduated from Westview High School last spring as accomplished scholar athletes, both with four years on the varsity diving team, as well as the high school’s marching band. “Kevin was the first Westview diver to take first at CIF, and the first diver in 92129 history to take first at CIF for Division 1. Christy was captain of the women’s diving team and won the coach’s most outstanding award,” said Pam. Their love of diving began with trampoline classes and eventual competition – and trips to Nationals – in the sport. As stated by Pam, many of their teammates successfully transitioned to diving upon entering high school, and the twins were no exception. With Christy and Kevin showing such athletic ability, it should come as no surprise that Pam and Jon met while participating in a sportsrelated endeavor. “We met skiing in Banff, Canada, at the Farwest Ski Association’s annual competition in 1994. We were in different San Diego-based ski clubs, yet kept running into each other in a group of 600 skiers. We were married two years later,” stated Jon, a computer engineer for Oracle. He and Pam, a registered health underwriter who is currently running an independent employee benefit business, still enjoy skiing, as well as camping, fishing, and traveling to the UK. ¢

Catherine recently held a photography exhibition fundraiser entitled “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words” to give back to homeless children in San Diego, as well as underprivileged students in China, at the offices of We Chinese in America Magazine. “Ever since I was little, I saw many homeless people living on the streets, and I told myself that when I grew up I would make it a goal to do what I could in order to help those in need,” Catherine expressed. “I am so lucky to be fortunate enough to have everything that I have and to be given all of the amazing opportunities that a lot of other people don’t have. Donations were also encouraged and some people made direct donations to Catherine’s cause. The proceeds from the exhibit will provide school supplies for homeless children in San Diego through the Storefront Shelter. Catherine sought inspiration for her artwork from nature and scenery. Her favorite piece is of a scene done at Coronado Beach around sunset. Catherine has also volunteered with the Salvation Army and additional programs throughout San Diego that provide food and security for homeless people.

Resilient Rina
RINA SY RECOVERS FROM LEUKEMIA AND INSPIRES HOPE FOR ALL photos by ESPERO PHOTOGRAPHY
R
ina Sy, a 6-year-old girl from Rancho Peñasquitos, has inspired her family, the community, and all those who have heard her story. Rina was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia Philadelphia chromosome on May 10, 2013. As a rare, high-risk form of leukemia, immediate action was taken to save Rina’s life. The option of a bone marrow transplant was explored, and despite the odds, her brother Patrick was found to be a perfect match. Rina underwent a bone marrow transplant four months later. To everyone’s surprise, not only was the transplant successful, but Patrick’s cells proved to be double the amount of new cells anticipated. Nicknamed “Powerful Patrick,” after the discovery, Patrick’s cells led to a healthy recovery for Rina. According to Rina’s mother,
Marianne, “The recovery bonded the siblings together stronger than ever imagined.” Today Rina is a typical kid again, thriving in 92129 and enjoying life. Thanks to the help of Patrick, her medical team, and the work, advocacy, research, and support provided by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), she was given a second chance. Her family prays that she will be declared “cancer free” within five years after her transplant. The Sy family is currently seeking to give back to LLS. They encourage people to come out for the Light the Night Walk on Nov. 7 at Petco Park at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit research for all blood cancers through LLS. Team Resilient Rina has set a fundraising goal at $10,000. To make a donation for the team be sure to visit www.pages.lightthenight. org/sd/sandiego14/resilientrina.

T
he world of theater is superstitious, but Westview Theatre Company (WVTC) proves that thirteen isn’t an unlucky number after all. In its thirteenth season, the Westview High School theater program is as ambitious and inventive as ever. “The WVTC is a student-driven organization,” explained Laurie Reinbold, President of the Westview Theatre Alliance. The Alliance is a parent organization providing volunteer and financial support, but Reinbold emphasized that the students do most of the work. A student board leads the company, this year chaired by Ava Fakrabadi, Lucas Bennett, Sophie Cobarrubia, Jessica Peng, and Mady Tondi. Laurie continued, “Our students not only act in the plays, but they build the sets, design all technical aspects of the
plays and musicals, including costume design, hair and makeup, props, graphics, lighting and sound. Along with the director, they are the creative force behind the show.” That director is Chris Wollman, who expanded the program from three events a year to the current season of three full-length plays, a spring musical, and a one-act festival with plays written, directed, acted, and produced by students. “He pulls amazing performances out of them time and again,” enthused Laurie. The recent run of Waiting for Godot is one example. Students rehearsed the play over the summer for an early-season production that was so well received that WVTC scheduled additional performances. Most WVTC funding derives from ticket sales and donations. Without a fulltime drama

teacher, the school and Alliance combine resources to provide a director. “We won’t let a lack of funding keep us from creating amazing productions,” said Laurie. “This theatre company is all about the talent.” WVTC has the credentials to back up her claims. The program has been nominated for twenty-four National Youth Arts awards in the past two years, with six awards won. In 2014, Jessica Frenkel and Yael Chanukov won individual awards, and Merrily We Roll Along won Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical. The

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND YOUR CAREER AS AN ATHLETE AND COACH? I participated as an athlete in both football and track in high school and college. When I graduated from college after a brief time in the military, I started coaching. My first head coaching job was in 1973 at San Pasqual High School. I was becoming a teacher and that went along with the teaching job. HOW DID THE BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PERFORM LAST YEAR? Our boys were Division 2 CIF Champions for the second straight year. Our girls were sixth in the Division 2 race. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM THE BOYS AND GIRLS TEAMS FOR THIS YEAR AND WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING OR PREPARATION WILL THE TEAMS GO THROUGH? Both our boys and girls teams should be competing at the level to challenge other teams to qualify for Fresno and the state championships. As for preparation, we started training for the fall in June so we can be ready.
WHERE DOES THE TEAM TRAIN? ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC RUNNING PATHS IN THE 92129 AREA? We run all over Rancho Peñasquitos and the nearby communities. We like Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve a lot. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT ABOUT COACHING? THE MOST CHALLENGING? Working with kids and watching them grow into young adults is extremely satisfying. Keeping up with the young kids and new trends can be a challenge. WHAT IS YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DO YOU INSTILL THAT IN THE TEAMS? Work hard, be consistent, try to use your talents to the best, and keep learning. I keep giving them this consistent message and for many of them it will sink in. TELL US ABOUT THE SUPPORT YOU RECEIVE FROM PARENTS, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE COMMUNITY. Our parents are highly involved, last year over 80% of them helped in at least one of the the following areas: helping with uniform organization and check out, team spaghetti

dinners before meets, supporting the kids at meets, fundraising, helping out at the Mt. Carmel Cross XC Invite as well as the end of the season awards night, and more. We have to raise money for everything so their fundraising support is so important. They are really just very supportive and helpful whenever they can be. I cannot say enough nice things about them as a whole. IF YOU COULD GRANT THE TEAMS ONE WISH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? That their goal to make it to Fresno comes true because of the hard work they put in. TELL US ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF AND THE TYPE OF EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS THAT THEY BRING TO THE TABLE. I have five assistant coaches helping us and all are very hard workers. Each one brings different things to the team. Jay Rillo is our programs only on-campus coach. He is very organized and helps me keep track of our eighty-five athletes on campus. Shan Forehand, a CIF Champion while here at
Mt. Carmel as an athlete, brings passion to the table. That’s great for the kids to see. Erin Menefee, former All-CIF runner here at Mt. Carmel, is bringing some new training attitudes to our kids since she just finished running at the collegiate level. That will be new this year. Andrew McClanahan, a former
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RUNNING TRAIL IN 92129?
“THE TEAM LIKES RUNNING IN LOS PEÑASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE.” ~ Coach Dennis Mt. Carmel runner who really relates well with the athletes, acts as team communicator. They feel comfortable communicating with him. Brian Hobbs, who is new this year, wanted to get into coaching, and he relates well to the kids. He is great to work with.
WHAT DO THE TEAM MEMBERS DO DURING THE OFF-SEASON? Normal high school student activities for athletes. They keep their grades up and try to stay in shape. About 40% play another sport. ARE THERE ANY LOCAL TALENTS WHO HAVE GONE/OR ARE EXPECTED TO PLAY ON A COLLEGIATE AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LEVEL? We have seven athletes from our last two teams running in college. Eric Sindel is running for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Matt McEachern is running for MIT, Jared Senese is on the team at UC San Diego, and Sabrina Seay is running at the collegiate level with UCLA. Derek Morton, Marcus Montalvo, and Alyssa Schall are running at Chico State. WHAT AWARDS, ACCOLADES, OR RECOGNITIONS HAVE THE TEAMS GARNERED OVER THE YEARS? The boys have won six CIF Championships and finshed runner-up four times. They have won eight league titles. The girls have won twelve CIF Championships and finished second twice. They have won eleven league championships.
HOW DO YOU STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF ACADEMICS TO THE STUDENT ATHLETES? Kids are here to get a education – we stress that. We take steps to try and get students to keep a positive attitude. Many of our alumni come back to visit. We let our kids meet them and see/hear about their successes in order to help motivate them. We have a graduate of our team that is an assistant district attorney here in San Diego. He has been coming back the last couple of years to talk with the kids. That has been very beneficial. DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING FUNDRAISERS OR MEETS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? We just had our 34th Annual Mt. Carmel XC Invite in September. With over ninety schools competing, it is the biggest cross country invite in San Diego. IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE THE TEAMS IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? I would say “great attitude, great kids”.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND YOUR CAREER AS AN ATHLETE AND COACH? I grew up playing football, baseball, and basketball and played all three in high school. I began a running career to lose weight and find a new challenge while in college. I realized I wanted to be a teacher and a coach from the time I was a junior in high school. I started out coaching baseball and football and after five years found that cross country might be a better fit. I became a head coach twenty years ago, but I am only in my fourth season at Westview. I hoped I could pass on the passion I had for training, competing, and teamwork to high school athletes.
We hope to be competitive in a really tough league and finish well enough at the CIF meet that we return to the state meet. The boys have a chance at a very good state meet finish this year. Our top runners have had a big summer of training, eclipsing all other teams I have coached in terms of miles run in a summer.
HOW DID THE BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PERFORM LAST YEAR? Both teams qualified for state, which is always a team goal. The boys were ninth at state and the girls were twelfth. The boys were second in the league, the girls were third. The boys were third at the CIF meet, and the girls were fourth.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT ABOUT COACHING? THE MOST CHALLENGING ? Seeing the growth in the runners as they improve and develop a passion for the sport, and seeing runners give so much of themselves for a common goal. The most challenging is seeing talented runners not pushing themselves and setting the wrong example for the younger athletes.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM THE BOYS AND GIRLS TEAMS FOR THIS YEAR AND WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING OR PREPARATION WILL THE TEAMS GO THROUGH?
WHERE DOES THE TEAM TRAIN? Most of our summer miles – when we run as a team – are run in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. We run up to Mt. Carmel High School on a regular basis as well. We run out to Camino del Sur past the fire station, and we head up Carmel Valley Rd. and around the community park too.
WHAT IS YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DO YOU INSTILL THAT IN THE TEAMS?
42 • 92129Magazine.com • October | November 2014
I would like to see every one of the runners get to their own personal mountaintop through setting the right goals and giving their best to get there. I write a motivational quote down every day that I hope gives them a little emotion to push themselves that day. The older runners can really help as mentors to show what it means to push yourself. Leading by example really carries over to our new runners. It shows them what is expected. TELL US ABOUT THE SUPPORT YOU RECEIVE FROM PARENTS, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE COMMUNITY. Our parents are terrific. They volunteer whenever we need help at a meet or with anything extra like booking hotel reservations or having pasta parties which is something that is parent-organized and provided. They ask if they can help with anything and they will. Our families are incredibly supportive. IF YOU COULD GRANT THE TEAMS ONE WISH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Our boys team has talked about qualifying for the Nike National Meet for two years, so I guess that would be the wish.
TELL US ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF AND THE TYPE OF EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS THAT THEY BRING TO THE TABLE. Dusty Engel has been on the staff since I arrived four seasons ago and I was lucky to get him. He came over to Westview to teach math and wanted to help out as a coach. He does so much for the boys. He runs hard with them every day and is unbelievably positive. He is supportive, a great listener, and does such an awesome job
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RUNNING TRAIL IN 92129?
“THE LOOP FROM WESTVIEW TO MT. CARMEL AND BACK.” ~ Coach Robert as a constant presence. Angela Stassi is also on campus every day as a math teacher, and it feels like she has been there with us from the start, although it is only her second year. The girls really like her. She runs with the girls every day and lends a hand with whatever is needed. She is also extremely positive, and, along with our other
girls assistant Angela Croteau-Worley, helps keep an eye out for our girls. Our other Angela, known as Coach C-W, is very intuitive. The two female coaches give me a better sense of whether I am on the right path with the girls and how they are feeling. It helps me relax to have our two female coaches that are much more aware of different needs with the girls. WHAT DO THE TEAM MEMBERS DO DURING THE OFF-SEASON? Most of them continue to run, although a few have played other sports. Distance running demands more of a year-round commitment with the quality of our league and county. ARE THERE ANY LOCAL TALENTS WHO HAVE GONE/ OR ARE EXPECTED TO PLAY ON A COLLEGIATE AND/ OR PROFESSIONAL LEVEL? During my tenure with Westview, we had eight girls, I believe, and five boys running collegiately. Amanda Weber, Isabella Gallo, and Jessica Wu are running at UC San Diego. Grace Hanshaw and Hannah Sawatzki are running at SDSU, Julia Yang is at UC Davis, Kaelyn Harbison is at the San Francisco School of the Arts, and
Dyess Verfurth is competing for Emory. On the boys side, Ryan Barrett is running for Bowdoin, Collin Barraugh and Garrett Ryan are at Clairemont in Pomona, Alex Gronotti is at Cal State San Marcos, and Michael Good will be running at Chico State. WHAT AWARDS, ACCOLADES, OR RECOGNITIONS HAVE THE TEAMS GARNERED OVER THE YEARS? Two years ago our boys team received special patches from the CIF office for having the highest team GPA for all boys cross country teams. Our girls teams have qualified for the state meet for four straight years. HOW DO YOU STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF ACADEMICS TO THE STUDENT ATHLETES? I try to have them out of practice by 5:15 p.m. each day and I am very committed to that. This gives them four to five hours per night for homework. IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE THE TEAMS IN FIVE WORDS OR LESS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? I would say that the teams are dedicated, talented, competitive, focused, and determined.

OUR
TOWN Dive Into San Diego's History at Old Town by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Sandé Lollis
O
ld Town, San Diego harks back to the roots of San Diego’s early days as a settlement. There’s loads of history and lots to see packed into a few blocks between the I-8 and I-5 freeway, including the historic parks and infamous Whaley House. For a more mobile experience, the Old Town Trolley Tours offer sightseeing of Old Town and beyond from the comfort of an old-school trolley. The Old Town Historic Park appears to be straight off a Hollywood movie set. You can just picture the cowboys atop their horses and ladies with hoop skirts parading down the main way. Visit a traditional adobe house, La Casa de Estudillo, the First Brick Courthouse, the Seeley Stables where horses and carriages were once stored, and many restored homes of historic San Diego families. A short distance away is Presidio Park, with the Junipero Serra Museum and Bazaar Del Mundo specialty shops. Above Old Town is a plot of land known as Heritage Park. Take a step back in time in these restored Victorian homes where you can get a glimpse of what life was like in these regal estates. But when it comes to a particular house in Old Town, be careful of what you find! The Whaley House – it’s a place that you dare your friends to step into. Are those footsteps you’re hearing? Did you feel a chill? Known as one of the most haunted spots in America, the Whaley House is open for daytime and nighttime tours, and perhaps you’ll get a ghostly visitor or two. If you aren’t brave enough to step inside, you can walk around the outside and tour the gift shop.
DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2014 produced by SOHO (Save Our Heritage Organization) This Nov. 1 and 2, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2014 comes back to Old Town. The annual celebration honors those who have passed and attributes to San Diego's Mexican heritage with color, music and more. This is not to be confused with Halloween and is not meant to be scary or morbid. Rather, families and friends come together to offer the spirits hospitality. Over fifty public altars will be

peppered throughout Old Town, hosted by local businesses, museums and shops, with many of them depicting historical and recently passed figures important to them. Visitors are encouraged to tour the altars to learn more about these figures and pay respects. A Tour of Altars Map will be available at www.sddayofthedead.org. Other family activities will include live entertainment, skull face painting, paper flowers, masks and more.

THE POWAY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCES VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
The
Poway Unified School District (PUSD) nominates volunteer candidates in the district annually for the continual support, time, and energy they donate to the schools. The PUSD Volunteers of the Year are chosen from this group of selected candidates. This year, three PUSD volunteers were selected. Two of the recipients hailed from schools in 92129. Congratulations to Mary Belay, a volunteer at Sunset Hills Elementary School, and Zoom Duong, a volunteer at Black Mountain Middle School, who were two of this year’s chosen volunteers. Mary Belay has been selected for her dedication to volunteerism and positive attitude. She has been volunteering at the school daily for the past thirty-two years, assisting with various tasks such as working with the younger children. She especially enjoys bringing encouragement to the little children and helping them with
ulti
their homework. “One of the things I love the most about Mary,” said Sunset Hills Elementary School Principal Tina Zegler, “is her positive twist on every situation.” Mary is always seeking to find solutions to situations, or offer new ideas to better improve the school. Zoom Duong’s contributions at Black Mountain Middle School can be seen everywhere. She maintains the Academy program, school volunteer signups, fundraising for various clubs, serves as the head coach for the Science Olympiad, First Lego League, and more. Zoom was responsible for generating an on-site Science Olympiad Day so that all of the school’s students could participate in a Science Olympiad competition. The PUSD Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. John Collins would like to thank all of their volunteers for their time and support. For years I talked about wanting to contribute to and be a part of its community,” said Anna. “It is a city full of wonderful people and so much culture – exactly the type of place Drawn2Art fits into so beautifully.” With help from her business partner, Jaci Stern – who recently relocated to San Diego to help Anna’s dream come to fruition – the first Drawn2Art studio opened in PQ this past June. “We are really proud to be part of this great community,” shared Jaci. “We know we are offering an important art education program that is rarely offered as part of most students’ curriculum in school.” Drawn2Art’s three-step mission is simple, and in its simplicity students and their families thrive (see their mission statement at www.drawn2artclasses.com). “Our focus is to provide a quality, fine art program that teaches the fundamentals of drawing and painting using a step-by-step approach so students of all ages are successful. SAKSHI MADAN SEEKS SOLUTIONS TO CALIFORNIA WATER SHORTAGE by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
F
or most people, water conservation usually begins and ends with a few simple behaviors: cutting back on lawn watering, fixing leaky faucets, taking shorter showers, forgoing the car wash. But for 17-year-old Sakshi Madan, the core of water conservation has manifested into a nonprofit and educational program called Kate’s Place. The current drought crisis in California is certainly not a new issue, but it is Sakshi’s response to it that is groundbreaking – literally. Sakshi, alongside her team members, founded Kate’s Place, “a fully functional house and garden that demonstrates water-smart technologies,” explained Sakshi. The water-saving and recycling systems include a recycling shower, toilets, greywater capture systems, smart metering, and rain tanks. Outside the house, all runoff is captured and used, and the landscaping consists of vegetation and trees that are appropriate to the area. Most even grow food. Funded by the National Science Foundation, Sakshi joined a diverse team with the Art of Science Learning program in San Diego called Incubator for Innovation. After 150 hours of collaboration, the team designed the model house. “Kate’s Place will expand the understanding of what we can do with water. It will prove that sustainability does not necessarily mean sacrifice,” Sakshi acknowledged. Because the project is still in the initial phase, the group seeks support mostly through social media. But Sakshi stated, “The best help comes from each individual changing their views on water and acting on water conservation.” Kate’s Place also spreads the word through booths at regional events. Recently, the group was awarded for their exhibit at the 2014 San Diego County Fair. They are also planning an exhibit for the Balboa Park Centennial in 2015. When not solving the California water shortage, Sakshi is a musician, a Girl Scout, and an aspiring engineer. On all accounts, she receives top honors. As a pianist, Sakshi has earned the highest level of Certificate of Merit. She is currently working on her Girl Scout Gold Award, and at Westview High School, where Sakshi is a senior, she competes on the robotics team. Following in the footsteps of her engineer parents, Sakshi reminisces, “As a young girl, I was always fascinated with how and why things work the way they do.” Today, Sakshi’s fascination with the how and why is helping Californians live more effectively in drought conditions. ¢ Group: Mission:

People Helping People North County Credit Union Provides Personal Service and Modern Banking Conveniences by AMY LEHRER | photos by Tyler McElhaney
O
riginally established in 1953, North County Credit Union (NCCU) became a Community Charter Credit Union in 1986 so that it could expand its financial services to anyone living or working in North County. Benefits to becoming a NCCU member are threefold. First, NCCU is local. NCCU Representatives who live in the community, participate in community events. Loan approvals and other key decisions are made locally by people who live in the community, have face-to-face relationships with their members, and understand local needs. Because of this personal knowledge, NCCU is often able to approve loans that “big banks” would reject. In the case of credit unions, control ultimately rests with its members, who are also member-owners. Additionally, members know their savings help their own community members attain their financial goals. Second, as a not-for-profit cooperative, NCCU helps its members save money. Branch Manager Yvonne Despie revealed, “NCCU representatives are rewarded for finding members the best deal, not for making record profits.” In general, credit unions charge lower fees, offer higher savings rates, which allows money to grow faster, and lower rates on loans, which means the overall cost for loans diminishes. Datatrac, a financial research and
technology firm, regularly publishes credit union and bank interest rate comparisons that reveal the savings NCCU members can enjoy. All savings are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, and some retirement accounts are insured to an additional $250,000. And to help its members make the smartest financial decisions to reach their financial goals, NCCU regularly offers free educational seminars on identity theft, first time home buying, retirement planning, college funding and a variety of investment topics. Third, NCCU provides great personal service and “big bank” services. A NCCU customer since 2005, Juliana shared, “The thing I like the most is that I’m not just a number. When I walk in, the staff knows who I am. Also, I can reach and be reached by e-mail, which is very convenient and more personal.” Friendly representatives help members enjoy “big bank” services including financial planning services, investment funds, managed accounts, insurance products, online banking and bill pay services, mobile and text banking and even a personal financial management system to help members budget and save money at over 18,000 different financial institutions. Soon, NCCU’s new website will be launched as well. It will contain more financial education content and provide

LOCAL WATER POLO TEAM EXCELS IN THE WATER AND WITHIN THE 92129 COMMUNITY
P
acific Polo, a local club water polo team that practices at various schools in the Rancho Peñasquitos community, just participated in the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics, proving they are competitors to watch. Pacific Polo 14U boys took home silver in the Gold division, and the 12U boys were awarded bronze in the Bronze division. The 12U girls team finished 18th in the nation, the 14U girls finish 23th in the nation, and the 16U finished 13th in the Silver division. Pacific Polo was founded by two Mt. Carmel High School students, Ian Mckercher and Kurt Hatch. “I started a water polo camp in the summers with Kurt and interest grew in the area for a year-round team,” explained Ian. “We then started a year-round team which grew to become what it is today,” he said. The first team consisted of only twelve players and has quickly grown to over 140 members. The list of awards this team has garnered over the years is quite extensive. Yet the team is not only interested in excelling in the water. They also enjoy giving back to the community and building strong bonds with their teammates. “Our club’s short term goals are to continue to provide a place for the youth of our community to be part of a positive healthy sport and find a place where they fit in and make friendships and connections,” said Ian. The team also hosts community movie nights to promote community bonding. Be sure to watch the 12th Annual Pacific Fall Classic tournament to see the team in action. The tournament will be held on Oct. 11 and 12 at various high schools in the area. Visit www.pacificpolo.net for more information.

:::: HOME TIPS
Energy Saving Tips
for the Season by TORI MORRISON
W
ith the kids back in school and the holidays right around the corner, it’s important to monitor your spending during these busy months. If you haven’t started, now’s the time to cut back on energy use within the home. Here are some easy tips to get you started.
Unplug, Unplug, Unplug Make sure you unplug devices when they are not being used. Be especially mindful of computers and laptops. According to the Residential Energy Services Network (RESN), even when these devices are turned off, they will still consume power when they are plugged in and can account for five to ten percent of your total household electricity bill.
Cover Your Windows Blinds, drapes, and window coverings can help reduce energy waste and keep your energy bill low. As the temperatures in October and November remain in the high seventies, close your blinds, curtains, and window coverings to keep the house cooler. According to RESN, your air conditioning will have to work up to thirty percent harder to cool your home otherwise.
Use the Right Bulb Replace standard bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL). The bulbs give off the same amount of light, but are much more energy-efficient. Ensure that you are using the right size bulb for your light fixture.
Adjust Temperature Settings Maintaining a higher indoor temperature setting during summer and a lower indoor temperature setting during winter saves energy. Keep the temperature comfortable by making adjustments to your thermostat before you get home.
Schedule a Home Energy Audit Reach out to a certified home energy auditor for a home energy audit. A home energy audit is an in-depth home examination done by an expert to find out where energy is being lost. The expert then assists the homeowner and offers possible solutions.

92129’s Gentle Giant
DIESEL THE GREAT DANE SHARES HIS LOVE WITH THE COMMUNITY
T
here’s a Starbucks store in 92129 known for its rather charming visitor. Meet Diesel, the 155-pound Great Dane and Starbucks regular with a heart of gold and a personality to match. With his gentle nature and wet kisses, he’s quickly become a local personality at the coffee shop in the Von’s shopping center. Diesel and his owner, Ron Lawrence, can be found in front of Starbucks every morning from 6 to 7 a.m. busy entertaining. Diesel is quite popular among the local community, and he doesn’t mind showing it. “A young girl by the name of Leslie used to come by with her father before school and loved to sit next to me so Diesel would sit in her lap,” shared Ron.
Ron and Lawrence have been buddies since Diesel was an 11-week-old pup. They have frequented the plaza since Diesel was 3 months old. Diesel is Ron’s “second son,” and has accompanied him on multiple hikes as well as Boy Scout camping excursions. Ron is the scoutmaster of Troop 648, and Diesel has served as the troop’s unofficial camp mascot. He enjoys wearing a Boy Scout uniform, greeting scouts, and cheering up homesick boys. Whether it’s sitting on someone’s lap, comforting a lonely Boy Scout, or performing a trick, Diesel certainly has a way of brightening people’s day. Ron encourages stopping by and greeting them. They are always interested in adding a little bit of joy to those early mornings.

The Zumbathon was orchestrated by Myra Villafana, a member of Aguman Kapampangan International, which strives to preserve the values and culture of the Kapampangan people worldwide, and Zumba instructors Criseida Werdenberg and Michele Jones. Proceeds from the event went to benefit underprivileged children in the Philippines, providing them with school supplies such as backpacks, books, and more. Thirteen instructors volunteered their time for the cause, and the event sold out bringing in over $3,000. Over 150 energetic participants showed up to Zumba on for the cause.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Real Estate Matters
Why the First Time Home Buyer Matters by SCOTT VOAK
O
ver the past decade, San Diego has experienced boom and bust real estate markets (along with the rest of the country). Now, however, we seem to be settling into more of a typical market. There will still be swings up and down, but I think the rapid speculation that caused the major increases eight to ten years ago, as well as opportunistic investors snapping up foreclosures and short sales, are both in our past. The future real estate market is going to be more traditional. What does that mean for you? For starters, it means longer market times and more complex transactions. With lending standards tighter (to prevent the speculation that caused the boom-bust cycle), buyers need to have more money to put down (I discussed this and the necessity to show your home in pristine condition in a previous issue); and because debt-to-income ratio requirements are tighter, very few buyers can purchase without selling their current residence. This is the real factor in creating complex transactions and why the first time home buyer is important. Without the ability to purchase a home (say it’s an $800,000 home), without selling his existing home, a buyer must write an offer contingent on the sale of his home. Therefore, the offer on the $800k home only results in a transaction if the buyer gets an acceptable offer on his home (say for $600,000) first. So the buyer of the $800k home needs to sell his home for $600k (as an example). Similarly, the buyer of the $600k home likely has to sell one for $400k. That’s where the first time home
buyer comes into play. The first time buyer is not just purchasing a home for $400k, he or she is enabling a string of sales. Before the last boom-bust cycle, the general consensus was that each first time buyer purchase resulted in a total of 3.3 transactions. I think we are returning to that ratio now. So, if the housing market stalls, expect to hear about the need to relax standards for first time home buyers. When that happens, you can expect market activity and prices to start increasing shortly thereafter.
