hard to flip through the pages of your 92129 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).
Order your local Zip Code shirt today at www.WearYourZip.com
All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

arie Olson-Weir has seen PQ grow since 1988. Or as she put it, “Back when hot air balloons landed weekly behind our house because State Route 56 wasn’t there yet.” This December, she’ll celebrate 30 years of marriage with her husband Steve, who proposed to her via the scoreboard of a University of Texas Austin vs. Baylor football game. They have three children together: Garrett, 17, is in his junior year at Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS); Matthew, 19, is a sophomore at University of Northern Colorado majoring in geology; and Cecily, 24, who graduated from Texas Christian University, is now a middle school science teacher in Texas. That’s plenty enough to sing about, but there’s more to Marie, a professional vocal musician with experience in sales and marketing. She grew up in La Mesa and graduated from UC Santa Barbara in vocal performance. “I was blessed to study privately with Anna Bjornson Carson, a prima coloratura soprano who won the 1987 Metropolitan Opera auditions,” shared Marie. “Everything I learned about performance and teaching I owe to her.” Marie has sung for all of life’s celebrations – from weddings to funerals to National Anthems. As a private vocal instructor and community and church vocal leader, she reflected that she is blessed to serve local families. Marie believes that performance is 80 percent confidence and 20 percent talent. “A performing group or private vocal instruction helps a student gain confidence in the spotlight, to stand straight, and look at the director or audience,” shared Marie. “These are life skills!” With no affordable youth theater in PQ, Marie started Christian Musical Enrichment Theater in 1993, based at Peñasquitos Lutheran, and soon to celebrate its 50th production under new and continued leadership. She’s the president of Choir Boosters at MCHS and secretary for the drama board. She also donates vocal lessons through PUSD school fundraisers. In addition, Marie is the proud mom of two Eagle Scouts and continues in scout leadership since her sons began. One of her goals is to offer a scholarship to a MCHS graduate in the vocal music program. “The scholarship will be in honor of my mom, who passed away in December, and who has been the spiritual and musical guiding force in my life, along with Anna Carson,” she added. Marie finds working with both students and adults fulfilling, and anticipates many more musical years to come.

estview High School senior Shelby Perucci has been involved with the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) for her entire high school career. NJROTC at Westview is a citizenship program teaching its cadets self-discipline and self-confidence to prepare them for life after high school, and Shelby has excelled in many aspects of the program. Shelby is executive officer, second in command for NJROTC. She is also a peer counselor, otherwise known

as the “intervention officer.” Cadets can come to her with help on issues in their personal lives and school stresses. Achieving the rank of chief as a sophomore – usually a junior position – Shelby earned the honor of Cadet of the Year at that time. She was a platoon commander as a junior, PT commander for a year, and a drill team commander for three years. “I have been on the competition team my entire high school career,” she affirmed. “I was a part of the four-time state champion teams.” It may surprise people to know Shelby also used to race cars at Barona Speedway, and at one point she wrestled. Shelby loves babysitting and working with kids. She’d like to attend a two-year college to major in child development and minor in nutrition, with the goal of being an elementary school teacher with her own nutrition business. Her brother Cody is her biggest inspiration; he’s in the Marine Corps and helps her with workouts, pushing her body to the limits and always trying to be the best. NJROTC has taught Shelby an immense amount of knowledge about the military, leadership, and discipline. “It has also provided me with lifelong friendships and family,” she smiled. “I look at ROTC as my home away from home.”

QUENTZ BILINGUAL ACADEMY
A Well-Rounded Educational Experience
by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos provided by Quentz Bilingual Academy
“W
e believe that learning should be inspired and not be forced, and learning can happen everywhere and at any time,” said Dr. Cindy Zhang, founder of Quentz Bilingual Academy in Rancho Peñasquitos. Quentz Bilingual Academy is an English-Chinese bilingual school that offers preschool (with beginner and advanced levels), afterschool, and summer camp programs to students ages two to 12. In addition, they provide enriching weekend classes such as Abacus Math, Chinese Calligraphy, and Teen Modeling, to name a few. Quentz Bilingual Academy opened its doors in September 2015, after Dr. Zhang spent several years developing and testing its concepts. “The motivation was to make language learning fun,” she explained. Dr. Zhang especially emphasizes the school’s loving and encouraging setting. “We’re like a big family,” she shared. “We provide a safe environment for our students to develop the values they will need for success, learn to think critically and act ethically, and acquire the skills needed for growing in all aspects of life.” Situated in a quiet residential area, the Academy is conveniently located less than two miles from the I-15 and 56 exits. Their serene location is also just a five-minute walk from Ridgewood Park.
18 • 92129Magazine.com • June | July 2016
The school’s education concept consists of three main elements. The first is bilingual learning, focusing on the Chinese and English language. Second is the learning-by-doing method. “By learning from students’ own experiences, either a project they did or games they played, students often develop deeper understanding,” explained Dr. Zhang. The last element is character building. “We believe emotional intelligence could be more important than academic intelligence,” she shared. “With emotional intelligence, students can handle much more obstacles in life, will better know how to deal with “MY SON AND other people, in general will be self-motivated and selfDAUGHTER LOVED disciplined, and live a much THIS ACADEMY. happier life.” The school THEY LEARNED NOT also provides each student with individualized attention, ONLY CHINESE BUT possible in part because ALSO MATH AND of small class sizes. he Dorr family – Joel and Julie, and their son Jackson, 15, (and son Brandon, a police officer in Seattle, WA) – moved to PQ in 2003 from Santa Monica. They most love the “hometown community,” as Joel described it. He clarified, “We’ve lived in other large cities, but we never felt the connection of a community until we arrived in PQ.” Julie added, “Rancho Peñasquitos is reminiscent of the small town caring that Joel and I grew up with.” That caring element especially surfaced during Julie’s recent cancer diagnosis and treatment. Joel recalled, “The outpouring of love and support was staggering as well as humbling, and that made an impact. We instantly felt the kindness and compassion.”

Summing up the secret to how the family successfully dealt with their recent health scare, Julie stated, “When we have crises, we try to stay positive. We also find ways to laugh to get through it. Laughter has always been the glue keeping our family healthy and growing.” Deeply involved in their beloved PQ, Joel has coached the local basketball teams, and Julie has engrossed herself with the school’s art programs. Now, the parents enjoy watching Jackson play basketball, volleyball, and golf, and they even participate in these activities with him. The family also bonds by taking vacations to different cities together. When traveling, the Dorrs abide by a family motto known as the “Open Dorr Policy: Don’t Condemn Until You Try.” Joel explained, “Oftentimes opportunities are passed up for fear of failing, looking silly, or not liking something. So, whether we’re trying different types of food or learning to speak German for a future vacation, we will try something new at least once.” Their "go for it" attitude has translated into fun new ventures for each parent. For example, Joel just completed his first novel, Those Crazy Notions of Otherwise Intelligent People (www.joeldorr.com). In addition, Julie started her own content marketing consulting practice in 2010, and had previously joined forces with Joel to launch Showsmarts, an award-winning online learning website for trade show staffers. No matter what new adventure they embark on, the Dorrs are grateful to live in 92129. Julie professed, “From the bottom of our hearts, we thank all of PQ for the friendship and love. We are honored to say that PQ is our family.”

Turn the chicken and cook for another 4 minutes. Remove the chicken thighs and set aside. Add in the garlic, tomato, and onion to simmer for about 4 minutes to absorb the skillet juices. PQ STUDENTS PRESENT NEW APP TO PRESIDENT AT WHITE HOUSE SCIENCE FAIR
F
ive Westview High School seniors represented 92129 in a recent trip to Washington, D.C. for the White House Science Fair. Bansi Parekh, Mona Fariborzi, McKenna Stamp, Siobhan Garry, and Lauren Mori earned a spot at the prestigious event for their work on an Android app prototype called Spectrum. The app’s purpose is to foster a supportive community for LGBTQ+ youth. “Finding information and community events for LGBTQ youth on your own can be difficult, and having someone who understands what you’re going through can make a world of difference,” explained Bansi, team captain. “We sought to make an app that would solve these problems.” The students originally worked together to develop the app for Technovation Challenge, a three-month-long competition in the spring of 2015. In those three months, they developed the app prototype, business plans, and
marketing strategies. The team’s app and business model were so impressive that they were encouraged to apply for the White House Science Fair, an annual science exhibition to showcase K-12 student competitors and winners from a broad range of STEM competitions. The fair was established under the Obama administration – the 2016 fair was the sixth and final fair. “Our experience at the White House has definitely influenced our thoughts about our future careers,” Bansi shared. “I plan to study electrical engineering and computer science at UC Berkeley, and am considering mobile app development as a future career.” Her fellow teammates are also planning on making a difference in various other fields – Mona plans to study biology at UC Irvine, McKenna will study business, and Siobhan plans to study mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley. as Arnold, a hiking and environmental enthusiast, called Rancho Peñasquitos home for 29 years. While a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) diagnosis left Jas wheelchair-bound, he never let the limitations inhibit him from making an impact in other's lives, or from enjoying his own. A life in PQ provided Jas with many landscapes that he could explore, from the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park to Balboa Park to his own backyard. Before his passing this Spring, Jas became involved with the Black Mountain Open Space Park Citizens Advisory Committee, and for the past eight years worked on the “Trail for All People."
The trail is a 1,100-foot flat path with four covered shade structures on the north side of Black Mountain, accessible for people in wheelchairs, young children, the elderly, and for anyone whose hiking may be hindered by more irregular terrain. "Being in a wheelchair didn't keep Jas from loving the outdoors and wanting to provide access to it for everybody, not just the ablebodied biker or hiker," shared Mike Kelley, secretary for the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. "Jas worked tirelessly with me and others on the committee to make the trail happen, as he did for many other projects in the park."

Married for 35 years, Jas considered his wife Lisa to be his soulmate, caregiver, and best friend. “He was one of the nicest people you would ever meet,” Lisa shared. “Jas was one of the most engaging people I ever knew. He had a wonderful sense of humor and never took himself too seriously.” Jas had been an avid skier before MS sidelined him, so one of his wishes for the organization National MS Society – for which he also volunteered – was that they’d find a cure and find a way to reverse nerve damage already done. “He never complained even though he had so much to complain about,” said Lisa.
Jas also loved bicycling, hiking, and backpacking, and was always looking for a way for people with disabilities to be able to get a taste of nature. “His persistence and continued work to get the Trail for All People built was truly amazing considering how difficult things had become for him,” Lisa affirmed. “Not only was he my husband, he was my best friend. I am so very proud of him – he loved his family and was proud of us too.” Rancho Peñasquitos is also proud and grateful for Jas and his contribution to what will be a lasting legacy in the Trail for All People. He will always be a bright spot in the 92129 community.

Young 92129 performers Hayley Ditter, Katie Ditter, and Zoe Goldstein recently lent their talents to Once On This Island. The musical is an original interpretation of The Little Mermaid. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. Their love has to overcome the prejudices of their society – and the obstacles set by the ominous, interfering gods of water, death, love, and the earth. Once On This Island was presented by J*Company Youth Theatre, with a talented cast of kids under the leadership of Artistic Director Joey Landwehr. The show ran in May, with all performances taking place at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. Learn more at www.sdcjc.org/jc.
Cool Woman of 2016 Named
Rancho Peñasquitos resident Anne Fege was among luminaries honored during Girl Scouts San Diego’s Cool Women of 2016 celebration. The renowned forester, educator, and nature advocate credits her love for the outdoors, environmental values, and leadership skills to Girl Scouting. Anne holds a master’s degree in forest science from Yale and, in 1991, became one of the first 10 women appointed as a U.S. forest supervisor. She also co-founded San Diego Children and Nature and chairs the City of San Diego’s Community Forest Advisory Board. 92129 Elementary Schools Receive Honors
Adobe Bluffs Elementary School and Los Peñasquitos Elementary School are among three Poway Unified School District elementary schools selected to receive honors under the California Department of Education’s Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program. Schools applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies, and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies. Seven hundred seventy-two elementary schools throughout the state were selected out of the nearly 6,000 that were eligible to apply. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said, “These schools shine as bright beacons for others, putting forth an exemplary effort to ensure that every student is ready for 21st century college and careers. California teachers are developing an education model for the nation, training the students of today to be problem-solvers, inventors, and pioneers of tomorrow.” To learn more visit www.cde.ca.gov.

Odyssey of the Mind
Four 92129 schools recently sent teams to UC Riverside for the Odyssey of the Mind California State Tournament. Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that provides creative problem solving opportunities and fosters original thinking. By working in teams, students learn teamwork, problem solving, and that a group can be a powerful thinking force. Among the Poway Unified School District (PUSD) teams that made it to State, Adobe Bluffs Elementary sent two, Deer Canyon Elementary sent one, Black Mountain Middle School sent three, and Westview High School sent a team that ranked fourth overall. “Four years ago, there was just one team of seven kids at Adobe Bluffs. This year, we had 13 teams from six different PUSD schools,” shared coach Ami Lau. “This creative problem solving program is a great fit for PUSD students looking for a challenging, educational, and fun activity.” Learn more at www.calomer.org.
Rolling Hills Park Fundraiser
The Parks and Recreation Department and Sienna’s PlayGarden, a 92129 nonprofit organization, will host a showing of Kung Fu Panda 3 this summer to help raise money to improve Rolling Hills Park. The free family-friendly event will take place Saturday, July 9, at Rolling Hills Park. Families are encouraged to arrive at 5 p.m. to purchase food and refreshments from the food trucks, which will donate a portion of proceeds to the cause. Music and kids’ activities will take place before the movie begins at dusk. Sienna’s PlayGarden was created by 92129’s Palkovic family in honor of their late daughter Sienna, who loved playing at Rolling Hills Park. The nonprofit’s mission is to help provide new, high-quality play equipment for the children of their community. Learn more at www.siennasplaygarden.isabellasgiraffeclub.org.
Helping Animals in California
Assemblymember Brian Maienschein announced that he was recently named “Legislator of the Year” by PawPAC, a leading advocacy organization for animals in California. Maienschein received the award for authoring legislation last year to help animals in California. Two of his bills, AB 494 and AB 316 were signed into law by Governor Brown. AB 494 allows pets to be included in civil restraining orders and AB 316 allows veterinarians from other states to provide assistance in California when necessary. “It is an honor to be recognized as Legislator of the Year by PawPAC for my work to help animals in California,” he said. “I remain committed to ensuring that animals get the care and protection they need. I am proud to be recognized as a champion for the safety of animals and their owners in times of crisis.” Assemblymember Brian Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Carmel Valley, Clairemont, Del Dios, Del Mar Heights, Fairbanks Ranch, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Santa Fe, Sabre Springs, San Carlos, San Pasqual Valley, Scripps Ranch, Sorrento Valley, and Tierrasanta.

Rancho Peñasquitos book publicist Paula Margulies has just released a nonfiction handbook called The Tao of Book Publicity: A Beginner’s Guide to Book Promotion. Paula and her family have lived in 92129 for 22 years, where she enjoys hiking in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve and writing in her home office. “We have many close friends here, and love the community spirit and congeniality of the people in PQ,” Paula said. The Tao of Book Publicity is designed to help authors, both beginning and experienced alike, with all aspects of book promotion. Prior to joining the firm, Daniel was a senior associate attorney for more than 13 years at Hurwitz Holt, APLC, where he represented companies, organizations, and individuals specializing in diverse areas of technology, scientific research, engineering, manufacturing, publishing, commerce, and entertainment in employment-based immigration cases. Terry Spencer Golf Tournament Continues
The 6th Annual Terry Spencer Memorial Golf Tournament continues this summer in honor of community member Terry Spencer, who passed five years ago from lung cancer. Shortly after his passing, a neighbor organized a golf memorial in his honor. Although it began as a personal event, it was so well-received that Terry’s wife Colleen Spencer and her children continue to hold the tournament each year and donate proceeds to the American Lung Association. The first tournament had approximately 35 golfers participate, and it has now grown to over 100. The tournament is a fitting tribute; Terry loved golf and the sport was frequently a part of their family vacations. The entire Spencer family has always been very active in community activities, including sports organizations and volunteering. The golf tournament will be held on Sunday, July 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Vineyard Golf Course. For more information contact Colleen Spencer at 858-538-4148 or colleenspencer19@gmail.com.
No Place for Hate
Luqmaan Bokhary, a junior at Westview High School, recently contributed to his campus’s No Place for Hate Week. The annual week-long campaign is dedicated to combating bias and bullying, leading students to long-term solutions for creating and maintaining a positive school climate. “Each day represented a different aspect or section of discrimination,” explained Luqmaan. “ASB put on a huge wall the entire week where students wrote messages and pledged to be more open and accepting toward others.” Luqmaan was approached by ASB to help make sure the Muslim Student Association – for which he currently serves as president – was accurately represented. In response, he helped orchestrate Hijab/Kufi Day, where his peers were educated on the traditional garments. On the importance of No Place for Hate Week, Luqmaan shared, “In order to truly rid ourselves from the hatred all around us, we must build each other up and work together.”
92129 Local Announced as Scholarship Finalist
The RB Chorale will present its 43rd Anniversary Show, Showstoppers from Stage & Screen, this month. The highlight of the two-night event will be the competition by the finalists of the Chorale’s annual scholarship auditions. These six graduating high school seniors from across San Diego County were chosen from a slate of 13 multi-talented teens. Besides being musicians of great promise, all six have achieved many significant honors and awards during the school years, and are active volunteers in their local community. Among the finalists is PQ local saxophonist Nicholas Hoo of Westview High School. In addition to the saxophone, he plays the piano and sings. Nick plans to attend San Diego State University to major in music entrepreneurship and business, and in his spare time volunteers at four local retirement homes, bringing the joy of music to others. Rancho Peñasquitos Boy Scout Troop 622 began working with the USS Midway Museum to provide service opportunities for their Eagle Scout candidates, and due to the Scouts’ hard work, the museum decided to strengthen the relationship. As the “Troop of the Midway,” they now have the opportunity to perform service work not only on the ship but also within the community. This partnership also provides the Scouts an opportunity to camp aboard the Midway every September whilst earning the Aviation, Weather, and Radio merit badges. “This new partnership with the USS Midway Museum allows further opportunities to empower our youth leaders,” said Scoutmaster Chris Neidre. Troop 622, founded in 1970, is the oldest troop in 92129. They meet every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Church of the Nazarene. Learn more at www.troop622.com.

30 MINUTE WORKOUT
9ROUND FITNESS PROVIDES EFFECTIVE KICKBOXING WORKOUTS ON YOUR SCHEDULE by LINDA FRABL | photo provided by 9Round Fitness
H
ow many of us would love to visit the gym regularly but just can’t find the time? Whether our little ones need to be shuttled to and from their soccer practices or our boss needs us to entertain clients after work, it’s difficult committing to an exercise regime when our lives are so busy. That’s why the “9Round 30 Minute Kickbox Fitness” concept is so ideal.
With new locations that just opened in February 2016 in Rancho Bernardo and Torrey Highlands, both venues offer full-body workouts in just 30 minutes, complete with a complimentary personal trainer and nutrition coach. The best part is that you’re not required to adhere to a specific time-frame. Kristin Clover, owner/manager of the Rancho Bernardo location, explained, “The
AT-A-GLANCE
9Round model centers around the needs of its members, catering to that critical element in everyone’s life: time. There are no class times, so members work out on their schedules, not ours.” Brad Unnasch, owner/manager of the Torrey Highlands location, emphasized that even though the exercise session is short, it is still highly effective. He shared, “Using kickboxing equipment and moves to work the entire body, members get to do aerobic and anaerobic work, cardio, muscle toning, and lots of core in every workout. We know how to challenge members to push their limits, and have a fun – albeit sweaty – time doing it!” The business idea was first conceived in 2007 by the International Kickboxing Federation Light Middleweight World Champion, Shannon Hudson. His business has since grown to 350 locations internationally. In 2016, 9Round was even named one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 500 Franchises. These two new franchise locations are already endearing themselves to their neighborhoods. For example, 9Round has graciously sponsored the RB High School PTA, the Miss Poway Pageant, the Willow Grove Educational Foundation, the Guns and Hoses Gold Tournament, and Westview’s Grad Night. Brad stated, “We are always looking into avenues to becoming involved in the communities.” If you’re interested in trying out 9Round but you’ve never stepped foot into a gym before, Kristin said, “The first time through a workout can be challenging, but after a few sessions, the body adapts quickly and improvements can be very dramatic. Those transformations are awesome to be part of!” Brad added, “Our mission is to help members achieve their fitness goals, no matter what those goals are.”

Brian Reschke SD Properties Group
Brian Reschke is the broker for PQ Properties and has been an active agent since 2004. His experience owning a high listing-volume real estate office in Seattle from 2004 to 2007 allowed him to learn a variety of marketing strategies, but when he moved back to San Diego in 2007 he decided it was time to focus on his clients’ needs. Today PQ Properties specializes in providing service to people making transitions in life. One client, Chris D., took advantage of Brian’s free listing offer and moved to a larger home. Brian sold their home, and they moved out for zero listing commission, which saved them $16,000. Another client, Jennifer K. shared, “Because of Brian’s experience in remodeling work, he was able to help me repair over $10,000 worth of items that came up in my inspection report.” Brian and his team work with many first-time home buyers as well. He has brokered over 300 transactions valued over $120 million in 12 years. He has also managed over 30 property renovations, which helps him advise his clients on their remodel needs to maximize their home’s value. In addition, Brian’s mortgage loan originators license helps him prequalify buyers and clearly explain loan and closing documents. Brian said, “I treat all of my clients like I would treat my own family, by providing stress-free and knowledgeable experience.” Brian has lived in PQ for 33 years and is highly active in the community. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School and San Diego State University, is currently serving on the RP Basketball League board as president, Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council as vice president, and also serves on the Rancho Peñasquitos Planning Board. Brian and his wife Alana have a daughter starting kindergarten this fall, and their son will be one year old.

MCHS COLOR GUARD IS WORKING HARD TO BECOME THE BEST IN THE U.S.
M
t. Carmel High School’s (MCHS) color guard team has come a long way in the past few years, earning first place in almost every competition of the recent winter guard season. Through teamwork, dedication, and a new coach, the 20-student team has transformed into one of the best in the nation. “When I began as a freshman in color guard, I had a great time, and the team was super close. However, we were not known for being the best team out there,” shared Brooke Clement, the team’s co-captain. “In the winter guard regional championships three years ago, we got dead last.” Brooke went on to explain that this quickly turned around when they gained Brent Dunlap as their coach two years ago. “When our new coach came in, we built our way to the top, having an undefeated season during fall guard and placing second in our division at our winter
guard championships this year,” said Brooke. “The team has really grown under his coaching, and we owe everything we are right now to him.” For the most recent winter guard season, MCHS received a silver medal that signified just how close they came to being first in the nation – an honor, considering their journey. With a few graduating seniors, the team is looking to increase its numbers significantly next year. “We would like as many students as possible, because our main goal is to build up our skills and go to the national championships in Dayton, OH next winter season,” Brooke said. “This is one of the most prestigious competitions in winter guard, and it is such an honor for us to be able to go.” The team emphasizes that all MCHS students are welcome to join the team. :::: DENTISTRY PROFILE
WHY SCRIPPS ROCK DENTAL
DOES WHAT IT DOES
by DR. ANTHONY E. HATCH | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
S
cripps Rock Dental was built around the core belief that the experience of dentistry needs to be changed from the status quo. This dental office was originally born on the East Coast in a commuter town near Baltimore and Washington D.C. From that inception, their aim was solely to deliver the art of dentistry differently. They strive to make the dental experience friendly, easy to understand, and comfortable. In 2007, the practice moved to San Diego, and has continued to redefine the way dentistry is perceived and delivered. They have built a team that loves people – if a team member doesn’t meet that core requirement, they don’t end up staying long. If they do stay, they get to work at one of the most fun and energetic offices in the country. The team members build long-lasting, deep
friendships with one another, and it shows. Patients can feel the level of mutual respect and friendship between team members. Scripps Rock Dental strives to create an environment that makes it easy for their patients to complete the dentistry they need. This means continuously working to take the “road blocks” out of dentistry. This includes knowing the ins and outs of insurance benefits to make dental coverage as easy as possible. It means making a plan for every patient so that the team has a 100 percent clear understanding of where patients are starting from, where they want to go, and how the team with get them there – all before any treatment has begun. The team strives to put patients at ease from the first phone call. Scripps Rock Dental has a light, welcoming atmosphere that you can feel

the moment you walk in the door. Dentistry does not have to be scary or too serious! From the first meeting with your hygienist and doctor, you will sense their love of dentistry and their priority of building a caring relationship with every patient. Scripps Rock Dental loves what they do. Go on over and meet them, they’d love to meet you and show you how easy and fun your dental health can be.

State Champions
WESTVIEW’S NJROTC UNIT EXCELS IN ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS
W
hen it comes to balancing physical and academic discipline, the Westview High School (WVHS) Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) shines. For the fourth consecutive year, their Field Meet Team – which consists of 40 cadets – won the Academic, Athletic and Drill State Championship. In addition, their Marksmanship Team was the State Champion for the second consecutive year. “Each year I am impressed at how dedicated our teams are and how much effort they put into practices after school. They want to carry on the WVHS tradition of excellence, and they carry the championship torch forward every year,” said Rick Jordan, WVHS NJROTC Instructor. “They are simply a super group of young men and women to be around, and I enjoy seeing them give their all for their cadetmates.” In the months leading up to the State Championships, the WVHS NJROTC competed in qualifying events at UCLA, in La Habra, at WVHS, and in Ramona. With the exception of the event in Ramona, WVHS took first place in each competition. While the next step after their championship victory was to head to nationals in Florida, the team was unable to make it this year due to budget constraints. “We have been to nationals four times previously via Navy Air, but this year it didn’t work out for us,” Rick explained. Despite that setback, the team will continue their efforts and train to one day become the National Champions.

THE PERFECT
PICNIC
Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL
W
hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.
LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org
MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us

OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the mission church, which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
PQ Market Update by Troy Merrell
I
n 92129, we currently have 61 homes for sale with the average number of days on the market being 22. The current average listing price in PQ currently sits around $730,000, continuing the trend upward. Keep in mind that this number can change a great deal depending on the ratio of condos to detached homes. Currently, 49 of the available 61 are detached homes, which lends to a higher average listing price. We are clearly in a strong sellers' market, but don’t let this deter you from buying. Whether it’s your dream home or your “just for now” home, this is still an amazing time to buy because interest rates are low. Locking in a low payment on a great home could be an incredible decision, setting you and your family up for life. If you’re in the market for a home, or just starting to think about it, it’s never too soon to talk to an agent. Whether you need someone to guide you to a lender or help you find properties as soon as
they hit the market – or before they hit market – give me a call and I’ll be happy to help. When talking to someone who is considering selling their home in a market like this, one of the concerns I hear is that their home will sell before they find a suitable replacement home. Lengthening escrow periods, selling with a rent back period, and many other options can help alleviate this type of stressful situation. If you’re considering selling a home contact me to learn about our many options, such as our 1-Day Listing Guarantee, Flexible Commission Program, or the Sold In 30 Guarantee, to name a few. Let’s make your dreams your reality!
