Derrick Breaux D IRE C TO R O F B U SIN E S S DE V E LO PME NT

I

n 2008, my wife and I finally jumped onto the social media bandwagon and opened Facebook accounts. To be honest, we were obsessed at first. We spent weeks connecting with long-lost friends and setting up our own online lives. It was fun and strange at the same time. We had walked through the doors of the digital social world. But fast-forward nearly a decade, and I’m getting concerned about how some people are treating other people on social media platforms. I am often astounded at the level of rudeness, bullying, racism, and other ill-mannered behavior I regularly witness. It’s becoming more and more difficult to find public postings without a string of comments from people bashing each other. We’ve all heard stories of children being bullied online, and I’m sure we all disavow that type of behavior. So why stop there? I have watched friends, family, and strangers post the craziest comments on social media – things most people would never say in person. This is appalling to me. What are we teaching our kids? Where did it go so wrong? How could a video posting of a high school kid’s amazing touchdown turn into hundreds of racially charged, insulting comments? Have people forgotten basic human decency? Do we no longer care about how people treat each other? How can someone understand the appropriate way to act face-to-face, but then get behind a keyboard and descend into hateful bullying? Don’t get me wrong. I’m an avid supporter of the freedom of speech, but freedom of speech is not freedom from social consequences. When I see people saying some of the hateful and slanderous things that they are saying, it makes me think. Sure, it’s easier to look the other way, but let me ask you a simple question. Would you continue to be friends and regularly hang out with someone that has no problem making Derrick Breaux racially charged or rude comments to people out in public? If Publisher your answer is no, then why are you still friends with them on Facebook? Perhaps it’s time for us all to do some housekeeping on our social media accounts. It’s painless and easy. And there’s a good chance those obnoxious friends won’t even realize you unfriended them. Gotta go! I see a great selfie opportunity about to happen. Thanks for being a part of 92129 Magazine!

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Vicki Rehkopf Shares Her Love of Learning With Local Students by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

F

or Vicki Rehkopf, there is nothing more satisfying than making a difference in the lives of the students in her classroom. “Learning every day with my students inspires me. I want to make learning fun, to create an environment where children feel safe to explore and make mistakes, where they feel supported by both the teachers and each other and a place where they recognize each other for the unique individuals they are,” revealed Vicki. She has been teaching for 33 years and has taught preschool through each elementary grade level. She is currently teaching fourth and fifth grade at Country Montessori in Poway. One of Vicki’s greatest passions is taking her students to Sunshine Care, an assisted living care facility. “The students spend time engaged in activities such as arts and crafts and singing. It is a wonderfully reciprocal experience. The children have an opportunity to show such compassion, and the seniors love the companionship. It’s a win-win monthly experience.

I rarely come out of there with dry eyes,” stated Vicki. She also enjoys helping in the Sunday school classes at Peñasquitos Lutheran Church. Animals are also dear to Vicki’s heart. She loves all species, even snakes and tarantulas. In fact, she admits that friends and colleagues will often call her to catch and relocate snakes. “I’m not afraid of any animals, and I’ll hold them all,” shared Vicki. Vicki and her husband Buddy moved to Rancho Peñasquitos in 1985 as newlyweds. “It is a great place to raise a family and I love the community feel and the diverse population. My dear friends are here, and I enjoy watching the gorgeous sunsets and the hot air balloons floating towards our home,” related Vicki. She is a native San Diegan, although she lived in several different states during her childhood as her father was in the U.S. Navy. Vicki and Buddy have two sons: Joshua, an artist and art teacher who teaches alongside Vicki at Country Montessori; and Jason, a City of Los Angeles firefighter and paramedic. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and can often be found exploring Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve and Hilltop Park, as well as taking walks along the coast. 

he calendar has turned, football season is in full swing, and the stores are chock full of holiday treasures for all to see and enjoy. It is with these thoughts that the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council proudly presents the 3rd Annual Cookies & Cocoa With Santa event, Sunday, Dec. 4. This free, local holiday party is open to all ages to come and enjoy music, crafts, Mrs. Claus’ Sweet Spot, free photos with the big man himself, and don’t forget to bring a toy to donate for the gift drive benefiting foster children in San Diego! When? Dec. 4 from 1 – 5 p.m. Where? The Del Mar Room at Hotel Karlan (formerly Doubletree) Sponsors: Discovery Isle, MCHS Band, Escondido Culinary Arts School, Sienna’s Playgarden, Brian Davey DDS, Girl Scouts of America, and more! Please be sure to come out and enjoy this annual tradition for one and all, and help to keep a smile on all our cherished children’s faces this holiday season. The PQ winter festivities include additional local community events open to all: • PQ Recreation Council brings Winter Wonderland back to Hilltop Park on Dec. 3. • Don’t miss Christmas Card Lane (Oviedo Street) starting early December for one of the county’s best holiday themed light displays. • WVHS and MCHS invite you to enjoy their winter theater performances (please check high school websites for performance listing, dates, and times). And before you know it, we will be celebrating a new year and yearning for day light savings time to conclude, which tells us that the 22nd Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos weekend is fast approaching: • 5K Fun Run on May 6, 2017 • Parade and Fiesta on May 7, 2017. 

alentine Cahill-Arklay, almost 11 years old, has lived in Rancho Peñasquitos her entire life. Her parents moved to America from Australia in 2001. Valentine loves living in PQ because of the really fun waterslide she gets to use at the local YMCA, as well as the occasional sweet treat from community staple PQ Donuts. ”The neighbors on our street do fun events throughout the year,” she shared, “like an Easter egg hunt, a trolley ride through the Christmas lights on Christmas Card Lane, and a summer barbeque.” Valentine spends time with her siblings Josephine, Rory, and Leon. “They inspire me because they’re always there for me,” she shared. “They can be very cute and make me laugh.” Valentine began homeschooling through Julian Charter School, and now attends the Julian Charter School San Diego Academy of Performing Arts (JCS SDAPA). While attending JCS, she came across an important realization. What started as a project for her school's project week, has turned into a passion for Valentine. She created Care Kits, which are bags packed with necessities such as a toothbrush and

toothpaste, deodorant, razor, comb and wipes, moisturizer, shampoo and conditioner, as well as other items to make life easier, such as a notepad and pen, peanut butter, and other non-perishable food items. “What inspired me was that you can give homeless people money, but that money might not be used in the best way,” she said, “so I wanted to give them something instead of just money so it might help them more.” “We give Care Kits to homeless people we see as we drive around,” Valentine affirmed. The project is important to her because she loves to help others and enjoys seeing their reactions when they receive their Care Kit. "I hope it helps make their life easier and they know that people care,” said Valentine. When not helping others, Valentine is pursuing her passion for acting. Since taking an acting class at age seven, she’s developed a love for the art and wants to be a famous actress one day. She hopes to go to school in Australia at her top choice: National Institute of Dramatic Art. To keep well-rounded, Valentine is also a swimmer on the Rancho Peñasquitos Aquatic Club Swim Team. Whatever the venture is, Valentine Cahill-Arklay will no doubt approach it with excitement and compassion. 

PQ MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT ON SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

B

lack Mountain Middle School (BMMS) sixth grader Emma Hellenkamp was named the third runner-up on Season 13 of So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation (SYTYCD) in September. Emma was selected as one of 100 dancers for SYTYCD at her audition in Chicago. The 100 dancers were then narrowed down to the top 10 before the show began airing in May. Emma stayed in L.A. during her time on the show, learning new choreography each week with her partner Gaby Diaz. “It was absolutely amazing to dance with her,” Emma said. “She taught me so much and was always so supportive of me. We became really close, like sisters.”

Emma has been dancing since she was two years old, studying a variety of styles including tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and ballroom. Foster enjoy PQ as much for its surrounding wildlife as they do for its schools and neighborhood. After all, it's not every day you find a bobcat in your yard. The family moved to the community in 2002 before Amanda was born, when Justin was a toddler. Dave is a senior IT engineer supporting TurboTax at Intuit. Colleen has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology/

neuropsychology and writes reports part-time from home as she raises their children. They’re a very active family unit; Dave plays in an indoor volleyball league and plays beach volleyball and drums, while Colleen enjoys cooking, gardening, and painting with Amanda. Justin plays Westview High volleyball and in recreational basketball leagues with Amanda. In addition, Amanda is a girl scout and founded the Endangered Species Club, which hosts booths at the PQ Farmers Market to support the World Wildlife Fund. Justin also volunteered last summer as a junior camp counselor. “As a family, we are very involved in giving back to our community,” shared Colleen. Through Kids Korps, the kids earned Presidential Service awards for their work with people with special needs, seniors, and families without homes. Dave coached Special Olympics for 20 years, and for 13 years volunteered at a camp for children with cancer. Colleen has been a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) with Voices for Children since 2008. “Although we thoroughly enjoy technology, and the conveniences it brings to life, we have minimized its use for our children,” added Colleen. Ten years ago, the children became (mostly) technologyfree during summers, except for emailing and family TV/movie nights. “We’ve found they spend more time reading, hanging out together and with friends, and finding creative things to do,” she added. The Foster-Kennedy family loves summer vacations, especially the Hawaiian Islands and Lassen Volcanic and Glacier National Parks. Home is here in PQ, where Colleen reflected, “It’s a neighborshelping-neighbors type of community.” 

an Diego native Betty King grew up loving musical theater and dance. She participated in her first play when she was in third grade, minored in dance at the University of Southern California, and competed in ballroom dancing for several years. Betty now shares her love of performing as the director and choreographer of Peñasquitos Lutheran Church’s Christian Musical Enrichment Theatre (C-MENT). “Twenty-three years ago, I was asked to help with this wonderful nonprofit musical theater group started by Marie Weir, and I have been with the program since then,” explained Betty. C-MENT is a nonprofit theater enrichment program that provides a Christian environment for children to grow their faith and develop their musical and dramatic talents. “I love watching the children grow up through the program. Many of the performers stay with us all the way from second to 12th grade. I love seeing their self-confidence grow as they go along their faith journey through drama, singing, and dance,” revealed Betty. C-MENT’s next performance is the play Fact or Fiction: A Christmas Edition, running Dec. 8 through 10. When she is not leading the C-MENT group, Betty is the facilities services coordinator at BD Biosciences. At BD, she is an advocate for service as a member of the Charitable Contributions Committee, where she helps to organize monthly activities such as volunteering at a senior center, feeding the homeless, and participating in many charitable community events. Betty and her husband Doug have been married for 30 years and moved to Rancho Peñasquitos 27 years ago. “We moved into the area so that our daughters could attend Peñasquitos Christian Preschool and be within walking distance of Deer Canyon Elementary, Mesa Verde Middle, and Westview High School. We were immediately drawn to the strong community and family-friendly feeling,” said Betty. Over the years, Betty was an active volunteer at the schools. In fact, she took her passion for musical theater to Westview High and choreographed the spring musical for eight years. “Recently, a Westview student that I helped choreograph got into his first Broadway musical. I flew to New York to see him perform in Finding Neverland,” stated Betty. Betty encourages all Rancho Peñasquitos residents to find it within their hearts to volunteer within the community. “The more I help others, the more I want to help. The knowledge that somewhere, somehow we are making a difference keeps my heart on fire,” exclaimed Betty. 

PQ NATIVE CAST IN LEADING ROLE IN CHICAGO’S HAMILTON

R

ancho Peñasquitos native Arianna Afsar was recently cast as Eliza Hamilton in the Chicago production of Hamilton: An American Musical. Arianna is no stranger to the spotlight; she has been acting since she was seven years old, appearing in many theatrical productions in both supporting and leading roles, such as Ngana in Starlight’s production of South Pacific, Cindy Lou Who in The Old Globe’s production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Annie in JCC’s production of Annie, and Gabriella in High School Musical at both JCC and Starlight. Arianna grew up in PQ, attending Canyon View Elementary School, Mesa Verde Middle School, and Westview High School before attending UCLA, where she graduated with a degree in ethnomusicology in 2013. Arianna has also been involved in beauty pageants, where she loved to sing for the talent portion of the competition. At 13 years old, she was crowned the youngest teen in the inaugural Miss America’s Outstanding Teen where she was first runner-up. She went on to be crowned Miss San Diego, Miss California, and was a Top 10 finalist in the Miss America Competition in 2011. She was also one of the youngest contestants on Season 8 of American Idol, where she placed in the top 36. Arianna always was and still is passionate about acting, singing, writing, and performing. She released her single “Love You I Don’t” and music video in October, and is thrilled to be acting in Hamilton, the

Broadway musical that received a record-setting 16 Tony nominations in 2016, winning 11, including Best Musical. Arianna is especially appreciative to work with the cast of the Chicago production of the play. “Being able to originate the Chicago cast with the most giving and generous cast is unbeatable,” she said. 

For the Love of Animals

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT WORKS HARD TO HELP SHELTER ANIMALS IN NEED

R

ancho Peñasquitos resident Reshini Umesh recently completed her Girl Scouts Silver Award. For her project she wanted to help animals in shelters who are in need of supplies, so she set out to collect blankets, towels, toys, and food to donate to Helen Woodward Animal Center. She first set up a GoFundMe account asking for monetary donations to buy supplies, but it was not as successful as she had hoped. She bought some supplies with her own money and also made flyers asking for supply donations, which she handed out to family and friends. “The result was amazing,” she said. “I got an insane amount of donations.” Reshini also wanted to spread a message to the community about how to help animals in need. The first thing you can do is adopt an animal from a shelter, many of whom have been

abused or abandoned. “They are just like us,” she said. “They want to be loved and taken care of.” If you already own a pet, make sure they are spayed/ neutered and are always wearing identification. You can also volunteer at a local shelter, where you might help with walking dogs, socializing cats, cleaning, feeding, grooming, training, or adoption counseling. “You will be making a difference not only to the animals that reside there, but to the shelter and to your community.” Finally, according to Reshini, the best thing you can do to help is to foster an animal. Fostering keeps animals out of shelters, helps improve their social and behavioral skills, and increases their chances of adoption. Reshini urges people to get involved and make a difference in the lives of shelter animals. “Don’t just read this,” she said. “Please get up and help!” 

BECAUSE A COACH

CARED

DON’T GO IT ALONE Mark was a self-proclaimed “total couch potato.” For 10 years, he tried and failed at traditional gyms. “I was never sure how much weight to lift or how many reps to do.” He tried personal trainers, but some weren’t serious, while others pushed him too hard, making him feel even worse. Koko FitClub was the perfect fit: friendly, inviting and “never smells like a gym,” he loved getting coaching with every workout. “At Koko, the equipment is computerized like no place else. They know how much weight you should lift, how many reps to do, and even monitor pace so you lift at the right speed. My FitCoach put me on a program based on my age, goals and strength level, and coaches me whenever I need him, on my schedule. It’s so much better than a personal trainer.”

AT KOKO FITCLUB YOU NEVER HAVE TO GO IT ALONE. We believe in fitness for everyone, but we build it just for you. With our digital coaching technology and amazing FitCoaches, at Koko, you never have to go it alone.

In less than 2 months with Koko, Mark lost 2 inches off his waistline and 14 pounds of body weight. “I feel great and have more energy than ever.” We are so proud of Mark and his results!

Drama Workshop for Children

Westview High School senior Shreya Huigol created the Drama Workshop for Children at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library five years ago and has run it ever since. In the fifth grade, Shreya organized, directed, and produced a production of Ramona and Beezus with neighborhood friends. She did a second neighborhood production, Horton Hears a Who!, the following year. In seventh grade, Shreya took her newfound interest to the next level by coordinating drama workshops at the library. Past performances include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlotte’s Web, Seussical the Musical, The Wizard of Oz, and The Lion King. The workshops help children gain confidence, public speaking skills, and learn how to work as a team through performing. “The energy, passion, and excitement the parents and kids have towards this shows me how amazing it is to be apart of the PQ community,” Shreya shared. For more information contact the library at 858-538-8159.

Adopt-A-Family Program

I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) engaged over 7,500 volunteers at 114 cleanup sites simultaneously at this year’s Coastal Cleanup Day in mid-September. During the three-hour event, volunteers worked to restore the health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment by removing more than 150,000 pounds of trash and pollutants. Volunteers also removed graffiti, replaced invasive plants with water-wise native plants, and performed general park maintenance. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of hundreds of cleanups hosted by ILACSD, receiving attention from several of San Diego’s elected officials who visited cleanup sites in their respective districts. For over 60 years, ILACSD has been San Diego’s most influential advocate for sustainability, serving as an environmental catalyst, awakening passion, inspiring action, and empowering everyone to create a lasting, positive impact on the local environment. Local Students Featured as Playwrights photo by Geri Goodale of Reminisce Photography

Three local high school students – Matthew Maceda of Westview High School and Minh-Son Tran and Samantha Rafter of Mt. Carmel High School – will be among the playwrights featured at the 32nd Annual Plays by Young Writers, produced by Playwrights Project and sponsored by the Sheila and Jeffrey Lipinsky Family Fund at The Old Globe, running Jan. 19 through 29, 2017. The festival will showcase six winning scripts from the California Young Playwrights Contest, which were selected from 385 plays submitted by students from across the state. The selection criteria focused on creative ideas, intriguing and authentic characters, fresh use of language, a story that is revealed through dialogue and action, and a script that would benefit from further development in the production process. Plays by Young Writers is divided into two programs, each of which includes one staged reading and two full productions. Two acting ensembles will present the two different programs, with actors playing multiple roles. For more information visit www.playwrightsproject.org.

Memorial Ride Through 92129 The Rancho Peñasquitos Parks & Recreation Council hosts various events throughout the year to foster community spirit in 92129. Kicking off the final months of 2016, the council and Canyonside and Hilltop Recreation Centers recently hosted the second Western Family BBQ, featuring food, entertainment, and fun for the whole family. The 10th Annual Polynesian Family Getaway Night, a celebration of island culture with Polynesian-themed music, dancing, and food, was held in September. In addition, many PQ locals recently got into the fall spirit at PQ Oktoberfest, enjoying German food, entertainment, and a beer garden. The Council’s next community event is Winter Wonderland in December, which will include snow, rides, live music, and photos with Santa. “These events are a great way to get our PQ community together to enjoy themselves at our local parks,” said Recreation Council Chair Scott Gellerman. For more information about upcoming events visit www.rpcouncil.com.

The Escondido Mounted Posse recently held a memorial ride through the trails of Rancho Peñasquitos to honor their fallen member, Diana Cavender. Diana, who had been a part of the horse riding group for almost four years, passed away in April shortly after riding in the Lakeside Western Days Parade. Her horse slipped after the parade, fatally injuring Diana. “She was one of its most experienced and beloved members. She had an unequaled love for horses – and her husband too,” said Posse Captain Albert Pfeltz. The memorial ride was held in 92129 because it has one of the group’s favorite summer riding trails. The four-hour ride and subsequent lunch was open to all who wished to honor Diana. A $25 minimum donation for Emmanuel Faith Community Church was encouraged. Poway-Peñasquitos Branch

WHAT DOES AAUW STAND FOR? American Association of University Women. IS AAUW A NATIONWIDE ORGANIZATION? Yes, AAUW is a national organization with approximately 170,000 members that span virtual and local communities worldwide. The national website is www.aauw.org

CAN YOU GIVE US SOME OF THE HISTORY BEHIND THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH? The Rancho Bernardo Branch had already been formed at the time, but there was a cadre of women who saw the need to have another branch in Poway. They added Peñasquitos to widen the area so they could look for women in those communities. The branch is celebrating its 45th birthday this year! HOW HAS THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH DEVELOPED OVER THE YEARS? When the branch started in 1971, we were all in our late twenties and had

just graduated from college with new families and new jobs. All of us saw the value of getting together once a month to hear different speakers and socialize with other women who had bright ideas and the desire to do something for the community. We started out giving a small scholarship to graduating seniors at the high schools in the Poway Unified School District. Now each year we give three Re-Entry Women’s Scholarships to women who have decided to go back to college and finish their degree. WHAT IS AAUW’S OVERALL MISSION? AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

WHICH COMMUNITIES DOES THE POWAY-PEÑASQUITOS BRANCH SERVE? The Poway-Peñasquitos Branch serves Poway and Rancho Peñasquitos, however, we welcome members from the surrounding communities. WHAT PROGRAMS AND SERVICES DOES THE BRANCH PROVIDE? Our branch has a general meeting once a month with speakers discussing current politics, social change, education, and various stimulating topics. We have had programs over the years that reach out to the community to help the working woman learn about new job opportunities and find ways to

balance her busy life. Our branch also has many interest groups that cater to the needs of the members of the branch. We have three book clubs, a hiking group, and a gardening group, as well as a bridge and a travel group. This year we are starting a new group called Great Decisions, which is a nationwide discussion group addressing the social and political problems of the world. DO YOU HOLD EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR? Our branch will be holding its 20th Annual Cover to Cover fundraiser May 13, 2017 at the Maderas Golf Club. Guests listen to authors share about their books and their writing processes, and take part in a silent auction and opportunity basket drawing. The money raised from this event

helps sponsor sixth to eighth grade girls for Tech Trek and three Re-entry Women’s Scholarships. WHAT COMMUNITIES DO YOUR MEMBERS HAIL FROM? One third of our 117 members are from Poway, a third from Peñasquitos, and the rest from the surrounding communities of Scripps Ranch, Escondido, Valley Center, Ramona, Carmel Valley, Rancho Bernardo, and Santaluz. DOES THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH HAVE ANY EXCITING NEW PROJECTS? An exciting new development for our branch is the AAUW partnership with San Diego Miramar College. AAUW has

partnerships with many campuses across San Diego County, and San Diego Miramar College is the most recent addition. The PowayPeñasquitos Branch recently held a voter registration event on campus and is planning future events to benefit the students at San Diego Miramar College. HOW CAN SOMEONE GO ABOUT JOINING THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH? Membership is open to anyone holding an associate’s (or equivalent, e.g. RN), bachelor’s, or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. The annual dues include membership to the national AAUW organization, AAUW California, and the Poway-Peñasquitos Branch. Any

and receive a free e-student membership. Upon graduation, e-student affiliates receive a free one-year membership to AAUW as a graduation gift. Undergraduates can also join the PowayPeñasquitos Branch and AAUW California. Graduate students receive a discounted national rate for the first year only and can also

join California AAUW and the Poway-Peñasquitos Branch. WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE BRANCH MEET? ARE MEETINGS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC? Our branch meets at the Ranch Bernardo Swim and Tennis Club on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are open to the public. To find out about the program for the month go to our website: www.powayarea-ca.aauw.net. WHY ARE ORGANIZATIONS LIKE AAUW IMPORTANT FOR THEIR COMMUNITIES?

AT-A-GLANCE President

Mission-based organizations like AAUW help educate the public and contribute to the community. AAUW local programs benefit Tech Trek sponsorships and scholarships for local students. AAUW nationally brings awareness of issues such as unequal pay for women, violence against women, sexual assault in the military, worklife balance, and access to

healthcare. AAUW programs encourage women to aim for roles in student government, boardrooms, U.S. Congress, and the White House. AAUW has research and online tools to advocate for work-life balance, urge members of Congress to protect fair pay, or teach recent grads to negotiate their first salaries in programs such as Work Smart and Start Smart. HOW CAN SOMEONE CONTRIBUTE TO THE MISSION OF THE POWAY-PEÑASQUITOS BRANCH? The best way to contribute is to join us in our mission to advance equity for women and girls. You can join the branch and participate in our mission-based activities and interest groups or make a financial contribution directly to AAUW. The AAUW email address is connect@aauw.org. The phone number is 800-326-2289. AAUW is also on Facebook and Twitter @AAUW. The national website

IF YOU COULD GRANT ONE WISH TO THE POWAY-PEÑASQUITOS BRANCH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Our wish is to expand membership and for the branch to be a local resource for everyone who wishes to support the AAUW mission. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING A PART OF AAUW?

The Poway-Peñasquitos Branch goals this 2016-2017 year are to raise funds to support sending six girls to Tech Trek, to offer three Re-Entry Women’s Scholarships, and to contribute to AAUW Funds for national support of grants, research, and developmental programs. Long-term, our goal is to continue to grow our membership and look for new ways to contribute to the local community.

Not only do we work hard but we have fun too! IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU’D LIKE 92129 MAGAZINE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT AAUW? Not only are we involved with local branch and community activities but our members work with other AAUW branches in San Diego through the San Diego Interbranch Council of AAUW. nside Tease Salon Studios, clients are welcomed to a chic, welcoming, and relaxing culture. This is a customdesigned hybrid salon featuring four private suites, combined with four open area styling stations. Beth Sczempka is the owner/manager and holds 38 years of experience in the salon business. She launched the studio over five years ago and explained, “I wanted to give experienced stylists a place to express their artistic flair without the usual constrictions of other salons.” The six highly skilled stylists stay in touch with the latest trends in both cuts and color. They encourage each other’s creativity in an upbeat environment that Beth revealed they enjoy being in daily. “We all have never felt more at home in a work environment than this one,” shared Beth. “We have a lot of laughs, we take care of each other, and we share a sisterhood that is rare to find.” The stylists’ sisterhood also carries over to their clients. Their ability to connect with clients and help them find that perfect look is a true gift each of these women share. And their services aren’t limited to just hair appointments. Their manicurist has over 20 years in the business and offers a relaxing experience in her private suite. Among Deana’s many

manicurists skills, she is a master at shellac as well as natural pink and white nails. “We are so excited to announce that we now offer expert eyelash extensions at our salon! Tandis is our highly skilled esthetician and certified eyelash extension artist. Her stunning work speaks for itself!” Beth announced. The salon also offers hair care products, such as L’Oreal and Redken, and a boutique with beautiful jewelry and seasonal scarves where you’ll find the prices perfect for a gift or for yourself. Tease Salon Studios gives back as a reflection of each woman’s passion to help increase confidence and well being in others. They’ve held Cut-A-Thons for various charities, helped Girl Scout troops earn badges, donated their skills for special needs proms, educated women in Mexico and Cambodia, and even raised the money and then built a home in Mexico for a family in need. If you’re feeling “teased” to make an appointment, Beth encourages potential clients to visit the website at www.teasesalonstudios.com. Clicking on the 92129 tab reveals profiles and contact information for each designer. “We are a family-friendly salon that starts with our own families,” added Beth. It’s true that friends have become clients, and clients, friends – one unique hairstyle at a time. 

H

ow many of us would love to visit the gym regularly but just can’t find the time? Whether our little ones need to be shuttled to and from their soccer practices or our boss needs us to entertain clients after work, it’s difficult committing to an exercise regime when our lives are so busy. That’s why the “9Round 30 Minutes Kickbox Fitness” concept is so ideal. With new locations that just opened in February 2016 in Rancho Bernardo and Carmel Valley’s Torrey Highlands, both venues offer full-body workouts in just 30 minutes, complete with a complimentary personal trainer and nutrition coach. “WE KNOW HOW The best part is that TO CHALLENGE MEMBERS TO PUSH you’re not required to THEIR LIMITS, AND adhere to a specific HAVE A FUN – ALBEIT time-frame. Kristin SWEATY – TIME Clover, owner/manager of the Rancho Bernardo DOING IT!” location, explained, “The – Brad Unnasch 9Round model centers around the needs of its members, catering to that critical element in everyone’s life: time. There are no class times, so members work out on their schedules, not ours.” Brad Unnasch, owner/manager of the Torrey Highlands/Carmel Valley location, emphasized that even though the exercise session is short, it is still highly effective. He shared, “Using kickboxing equipment and

moves to work the entire body, members get to do aerobic and anaerobic work, cardio, muscle toning and lots of core in every workout. We know how to challenge members to push their limits, and have a fun – albeit sweaty – time doing it!” The business idea was first conceived of in 2007 by the International Kickboxing Federation Light Middleweight World Champion, Shannon Hudson. His business has since grown to 350 locations internationally. In 2016, 9Round was even named one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 500 Franchises. These two new franchise locations are already endearing themselves to their neighborhoods. For example, 9Round has graciously sponsored Westview Wolverines football, RB High School PTA, the Miss Poway Pageant, the Willow Grove Educational Foundation, the Guns and Hoses Golf Tournament, and Westview’s Grad Night. Brad stated, “We are always looking into avenues to becoming involved in the communities.” If you’re interested in trying out 9Round but you’ve never stepped foot into a gym before, Kristin said, “The first time through a workout can be challenging, but after a few sessions, the body adapts quickly and improvements can be very dramatic. Those transformations are awesome to be part of!” Brad added, “Our mission is to help members achieve their fitness goals, no matter what those goals are.” 

Suburban Oasis

GET A BREATH OF FRESH AIR AT THE LOS PEÑASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

I

n a thriving suburban community like Rancho Peñasquitos, it can be easy even for locals to underestimate the true vastness of surrounding nature – after all, at around 4,000 acres, the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is actually one of the largest urban parks in the U.S. In 2012, we featured the PQ staple on our cover and now we’ve followed up with Senior Park Ranger Gina Washington to see what’s been in the works.

Q&A with Gina Washington, Senior Park Ranger In what ways has the preserve developed since 2012? Since 2012, there have been a number of improvements throughout various areas of the preserve. The south main trail was brought back up to the original grade and resurfaced through a joint project between the City Parks & Recreation Department and SDG&E. Carson’s Crossing Bridge was completely redesigned and moved downstream, creating a boardwalk that connects two disjointed sections into one graceful, rustic bridge. Additionally, we are happy to announce the completion of the Los Peñasquitos/Black Mountain Ranger Station. The ranger staff from Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve and Black Mountain Open Space Park moved into the facility in January of this year. The building is much more visible and easier to locate for the public, and we look forward to having visitors stop in to visit.

Does the preserve have any exciting projects underway? Los Peñasquitos Trail Improvement: This project is a restoration and partial re-routing of the south trail, west of the waterfall. Upon completion, the project will narrow the trail to the 8’ to 10’ standard, create a smoother surface, and reroute it up the canyon slope to prevent it from being submerged too long after a rain storm. Mohnike Adobe and Hay Barn Renovation: This much-needed project will rehabilitate the two structures, including new roofing, foundation repair for both structures, and additional interior and exterior improvements. The historic adobe and barn are part of the Canyonside Stables in Horseman’s Park, and as both buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it will take several years until this project is complete.

Is there a hidden gem some might not know about at the preserve? I don’t think many people know that they can enjoy a ranger-guided hike. The ranger staff is available to lead small and large groups in an area of your choosing and share some fun and interesting facts about the preserve. Just call the ranger office at 858-538-8066 to schedule your hike. Park maps and information can be found at www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/osp. 

“I LOVE LOSING MYSELF IN THE UNCHANGED BEAUTY OF THE PRESERVE, IMAGINING THAT I’M BACK IN TIME BEFORE HOUSES AND FREEWAYS AND THE MODERN TIMES IN WHICH WE LIVE.” – Adrianne Peterson, Rancho Peñasquitos Library Manager

“THERE ARE MANY GREAT PLACES IN IT AND IT’S A NICE WAY TO EMBRACE THE OUTDOORS. FROM EVERYTHING TO THE MANY TRAILS, WILDLIFE, STREAMS, AND WATERFALLS, IT’S A GREAT PLACE TO BE.” – Erik Z.

F

ounded in 1972, Boulder OMS is the oldest and most established oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in Poway. Offering such services as dental implants, wisdom tooth extraction, corrective jaw surgery, Botox and filler, rhinoplasty, and dental aveolar surgery, Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert T. Gramins have a high standard of care and a track record of exceptional patient results. “Our motivation is to be the most trusted and respected oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in San Diego,” stated Kelly Zielinski, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Boulder OMS. So much so that the doctors – and their staff – voluntarily undergo an onsite review of policies and practices every two years to keep its Association for Ambulatory Health Care accreditation. “This is the highest level of certification and ensures we practice to the utmost standards of safety and patient care,” elaborated Zielinski. “Additionally, Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are one of a select few oral and maxillofacial surgeons licensed by the State of California to perform facial cosmetic procedures.” Dr. Lin attended the University of Illinois for his doctorate dental degree. In 1998, he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Northwestern University Medical Center. “Dr. Lin is extensively trained in orthognathic reconstructive jaw surgery, facial trauma surgery, cosmetic facial surgery, and advanced dental implant surgery,” stated Zielinski. “He practices the full and expanded scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.” Dr. Lin

is board certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has also served as a board director, vice president, and president for the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. “On the national level, Dr. Lin served as a state delegate for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and is actively involved to ensure that the specialty itself stays current and relevant to healthcare,” added Zielinski. Dr. Gramins graduated in 1998 from Northwestern University with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. “While in dental school, Dr. Gramins was awarded a United States Navy academic scholarship and was commissioned as an officer in the Dental Corps,” noted Zielinski. Following dental school, Dr. Gramins completed a general practice residency at Great Lakes Naval Hospital and fulfilled his military service in Southern California at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base. Later, he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, is Board Certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and was selected to sit on the Cosmetic Surgery Credentialing board for the State of California, for which he has also served as president. Both doctors are highly involved with local charities including The Oral Cancer Foundation, Las Patronas, The Ronald McDonald House, and The March of Dimes. Additionally, Boulder OMS has been selected as the Official Oral and Facial Surgery practice

of the San Diego Gulls for a second season. What makes the practice so successful, explained Zielinski, is not only the doctors’ commitment to the community but to each patient’s individual needs as well. “Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins take the time to understand a patient’s needs and offer services to deliver optimal results.” 

UNLEASHED IN SAN DIEGO

Explore the City With Your Pooch For a Doggone Good Time

T

by SHYANNE LOPEZ

he only thing San Diegans might enjoy more than beaches, burritos, and brews is enjoying all of those things with man's best friend. Let's face it, it's tough to stay indoors in a city like San Diego. It's even tougher to leave your dog behind to miss out on the adventure. Luckily, America's Finest City might also be one of America's most dog-friendly cities. From North County to downtown, local dog owners are constantly discovering outdoor and indoor destinations where they can be accompanied by their four-legged friend. So, if you're looking to have some fun this fall with your pup, grab the leash and check out some of the dog-friendly activities we've put together – they'll have Fido's tail wagging in no time.

SAND AND SURF

HOWLING GOOD HIKES

BREWS AND BITES

MEETUPS FOR PUPS

Beach days are not just for us – our canine companions love the waves too! For San Diego dog owners, there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches to choose from. From Del Mar Dog Beach to Coronado to the "Original Dog Beach" in Ocean Beach, there is no shortage of beaches to let your dog off-leash for some fun in the sun. Want to make your beach trip even more memorable? Sign you and your pup up for some surf or stand up paddle boarding lessons!

A key to keeping your dog happy and healthy is exercise. Not only does it keep dogs in peak physical condition but it also keeps their minds active. Many owners, especially those without a yard, know all too well the consequences of a bored dog. So get outside and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of local trails with your furry friend. Balboa Park, San Elijo Lagoon, and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve are just some of the dog-friendly local hiking spots.

Tired from an afternoon of hiking or beach-going? Grab you and your pup some refreshments at any of the dog-friendly breweries throughout San Diego. Relax with a cold one while your dog enjoys some attention and treats of their own. Mission Brewery, Mother Earth Brew Co., and Bagby Beer Company are among some of the most dog-loving brew houses. Not interested in beer? San Diego boasts a variety of dog-friendly restaurants and cafés – just take your pick.

One of the most fun aspects of being a dog owner is interacting and making friends with other owners and their dogs. While this can easily be done at a dog park, one of the most sure-fire ways to get some doggie play-dates scheduled is by attending a dog meetup. Meetups can vary in design from breed-specific to muttinclusive to hiking or Pokémon GO dog walkers, so be sure to choose the meetup that is right for you and your dog. Look for meetups in your area at www.meetup.com.

Is Water Treatment Really Necessary? ASK THE PLUMBER! Brockmire Plumbing Services Inc., d.b.a. BPS Plumbing & Drains, has been bringing expertise in plumbing and water treatment to San Diego County for more than 20 years. Did you know that the water in most homes has more chlorine than a pool? In addition, many water districts use a combination of chlorine and ammonia to disinfect the water. This combination has been known to be more aggressive and can cause pinhole leaks in copper pipes. Your water is safer, but your home is at risk of potential water damage because of these chemicals.

Did you know that hard water causes scale build-up, and scale build-up causes problems that result in wasted dollars? The estimated energy cost for running a 40-gallon electric hot water heater is $450 a year. A scale build-up of just 3/8 of an inch gobbles up 55 percent more energy. That’s an additional $247 or more each year to produce the same amount of hot water! A soft water system may be right for you.

DAMAGE TO PLUMBING FROM CHLORINE

DAMAGE TO PLUMBING FROM HARD WATER SCALE

Bottled water is expensive, environmentally unfriendly, inconvenient, and doesn’t address the many other household uses for water such as bathing, cooking, and brushing your teeth. Call BPS Plumbing & Drains today to discover how we can solve your water problems.

PQ Market Update

A

s of the time of this writing we currently have 47 homes for sale with the average number of days on the market at 54. The average listing price in PQ currently sits just above $540,000, continuing the trend upward but keep in mind that this number can move a great deal depending on the ratio of condos to detached homes. We currently appear to be shifting from an incredibly strong sellers market, which is typical this time of year with school back in session. If you are thinking of selling your home now is still a great time as inventory is quite low, leaving you with less competition. Keep in mind, it is important to price and market your home effectively. Often homeowners see a neighbor’s home sell for a great price and then price their home higher, only to see it sit. When choosing a listing price one should keep in mind that the listing price is used to market the home

to potential buyers and is not the sales price. While I’m not a fan of drastically under-pricing a home, you won’t turn away potential buyers by doing so. If, however, you overprice your home people may move on to the next option without even looking at it. From my experience, well-priced homes sell quickly and for top dollar in any market. If you’re out there looking to buy a home, now is a great time. Interest rates are still very low and with rents increasing rapidly, locking in a low payment on a home could be an incredible decision that sets you and your family up for life. If you’re in the market to buy a home call me to see if any of the pre-market properties from my investors meet your needs, or if you need a great lender or simply want to understand the process, I am happy to help. 
