Camps. Camps. And More Camps!
I
Derrick Breaux Publisher
can’t believe we are thinking about summer already! Where does the time go? I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a little overwhelming. Two or more months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, last year we brought you the 1st Annual Summer Camp Guide. We had no idea of how popular it was going to be. This year, I am proud to present the 2nd Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 44). It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in the magazine! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher
Camp Stories From The ZCode Team “I was lucky enough to attend a four-day football camp when I was a kid. We stayed in dormitories, ran cool training drills, watched football tapes, and made some great friends along the way. It was an awesome experience!” – Derrick, Publisher
“Leaving the classroom for the dance studio was always one of my favorite things about summer. I remember attending ballet and tap dance camps, and loving every minute! Summer camp activities are a great way to energize yourself and get active.” – Randi, Associate Editor
“One of my best camp memories was with the YMCA. It was held in Balboa Park. I have memories of shooting bow and arrows and learning lots about different cultures. I saw how they made teepees and learned traditional dances. It was a lot of fun.” – Jessica, Director of Business Development
“I attended an art camp in middle school that allowed me to be creative with styles and tools I had never used before. By taking me outside my comfort zone, I learned to be more open to new ways of doing things. To this day I love the challenge of using a new art medium” – Shyanne, Associate Editor

“Summer camp is the perfect way to discover who you are and what you’re passionate about. When I was a kid, I used to go to Girl Scout horseback riding camps every summer – 15 years later, I spend every weekend at the barn”

JERRY HORNA AND JODY STELL RECENTLY HIKED 315 MILES TO PRACTICE LIVING IN THE PRESENT by LYDIA COBB | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
J
ody Stell grew up exploring national parks. She’s been to all 50 states and 42 countries. Her husband Jerry Horna was a Navy kid and described having lived everywhere from Puerto Rico to Saudi Arabia to the San Francisco Bay Area, with roots in the D.C. and Virginia. Jody and Jerry have lived in Rancho Peñasquitos since 1999, drawn here for the climate and outdoor recreation. Jerry is an IT project manager and attended West Virginia University. Jody, an accountant who grew up in Pittsburgh, attended James Madison University. When they’re not traveling, they’ll hike Black Mountain. Jerry surfs. Jody volunteers with Sierra Club’s Wilderness Basics Course. They both love the library. To celebrate Jody’s 40th birthday in 2015, she wanted to return to Spain where she’d spent a college semester abroad. “I loved the culture, food, and people of Spain,” recounted Jody, “and had returned there a few times, taking Jerry in 2012 to see my university town of Salamanca.” They discussed the possibility of hiking the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. They left San Diego for two months last year, hiking 34 days and 315 miles. Some days they rested and visited towns. Jerry developed plantar fasciitis – pain in the heel – that demanded they adjust their stride. “We enjoyed being outside in the fresh air every day,” said Jody. “Hiking the El Camino was a great exercise in living in the present.” At a trailhead in France, they registered as pilgrims. They crossed the Pyrenees and walked for 100 miles, then took a bus to a more northern route along the coast to walk another 80 miles. A train delivered them down to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, and there they walked along the coast concluding at an Atlantic lighthouse. Jerry remembered a typical day: “Walk, snack break, walk more, lunch break, more walking, afternoon chocolate break, walk more.” At hotels they’d hand wash their spare clothes and head out to savor local cuisine and wines. “Take your vacation days!” added Jody. “It’s so beneficial for mental well-being and to de-stress and unplug.” Jerry now has a Yosemite backpacking trip planned. They also aim to hike the Italian Dolomites with friends. For Jerry and Jody, it’s all about finding balance, living and hiking one day at a time.

he RPTC is always excited and proud to share information on our Community Grants and Sponsorships program. This year has been exceptional. Thanks to generous support from our residents and businesses, and our flagship Fiesta de los Peñasquitos event, we have been able to support $900 for individual grants, $6,662 for organization grants, and $15,500 in sponsorships. The total amount we have awarded in this fiscal year is a record-breaking $22,562!
We are proud to have supported: • Local organizations such as BLAST, Sienna’s Playgarden, AdoptA-Family, VFW, and PERC • Individuals within Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Junior Marines • Light the Night, Relay for Life, and Attacking CF teams from PQ • Local competitive teams such as PQ Girls Softball Association, First Lego League, MCHS Dance Troupe, Odyssey of the Mind, Miss PQ and Miss Teen PQ Pageant, and Little League Opening Day The list above is only a sample of what the RPTC has funded during this fiscal year. Check out our Get Funded! page at www.rpcouncil.com to learn more and see examples. While we can’t guarantee this level of grants and sponsorship support every year, we certainly hope that this highlights how much good an all-volunteer, civic-focused, nonprofit community organization can do. The RPTC has been dedicated to maintaining a clean, safe, and vibrant Rancho Peñasquitos since 1975!

he opportunity to row a boat may not seem like a life-changing experience, but for student star Gianna Wright, rowing has come to define hard work, motivation, and camaraderie. A senior at Westview High School and lifelong Rancho Peñasquitos resident, Gianna has been a member of the ZLAC Rowing Club for the last four years. “ZLAC has become my second home, and I have never put as much heart into anything as I have put into this sport,” said Gianna. Gianna was introduced to the sport at a ZLAC Learn to Row camp in the summer of 2012. She instantly knew this

was the sport for her. “The sense of camaraderie between the other girls appealed to me because I was never a part of a team before,” she shared. ZLAC Rowing Club has been instilling camaraderie in women since 1892 and is the oldest women’s rowing club in the U.S. The rowing season lasts from August until May; the fall competitions focus on time trial races and the spring season focuses on sprint races. Gianna practices four days a week after school and every Saturday morning. “Spending these last four years rowing has been a life-changing experience for me,” she shared. “It has taught me the value of hard work and self-motivation.” But Gianna’s passions extend beyond the sport. She is also involved in Westview Artists Association and Westview Speed Painting. Her favorite class at school is Studio Art. “It gives me a creative outlet and a place to break away from regular school pressures,” Gianna explained. She is also a movie buff who loves to make movie edits and film her own movie shorts. Looking ahead, Gianna will be attending Santa Barbara City College in the fall with the goal of majoring in anthropology and transferring to UC Santa Barbara or UCLA. Even further down the road, Gianna has athletic goals to do a 100-mile ultramarathon or Ironman triathlon.

How to Calm a Crying Baby by JENNY ILFELD DAVIS, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo
You’ve fed, changed, and played with your baby, but the crying hasn’t stopped. Time to take a deep breath and try these tips to help calm your little one.
Fresh air. Getting outside can also help soothe your baby, even if it is just stepping out onto the porch or patio, or walking into the backyard. A breath of fresh air and a glimpse of blue sky can also calm your frazzled nerves.
Swaddling. Recreate the feeling for your baby of being safe and secure in utero by swaddling. Swaddling – wrapping your baby up in a soft blanket – is a timetested way to recreate that cozy feeling. Swaddle your baby snugly enough so that the arms stay down and won’t flail out, but make sure there is enough room for little legs to move.
Motion. Movement, especially a swinging motion, can activate a calming reflex. Try wearing your baby and walking around so that your little one can enjoy the feeling of closeness and the rhythm of your walk. For the first three months, make sure your baby is facing your body in a front-pack carrier or sling for extra head support. Rocking your baby in a rocking chair or glider, or using a motorized baby swing, vibrating bouncy seat or an automatic cradle are other time-honored ways to help the cries stop.
Pacifiers. Many babies are happiest when sucking on something, whether that is a pacifier or your (clean) finger in a pinch. Babies have a natural sucking reflex, and sucking can steady your baby’s heart rate and calm thrashing arms and legs.
Your voice. Singing a song or nursery rhyme will let your baby know that you are there with her. It doesn’t matter if you sing offkey or if you sing a rock tune or croon a lullaby.
White noise. It may seem counter-intuitive, but newborns are often soothed by the steady roar of white noise that blocks out other sounds. While developing in the womb, babies are used to the noise of mom’s bodily sounds, such as a beating heart, so they feel right at home amid noise machines, vacuum cleaners, and fans.
Diet. If you are breastfeeding, consider what you are eating that might cause your newborn to have gas or stomach pain. Babies’ digestive systems are still developing, so they may have difficulty processing some of the food you are eating. Check with your doctor about changes that might help.
Jenny Ilfeld Davis, M.D., is a board-certified pediatrician at Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo. Dr. Ilfeld believes children are a privilege and joy to take care of and watch grow. She has special interests in nutrition, allergies and asthma, and injury prevention for athletes. When not with her patients, she enjoys cooking, traveling, dancing, and spending time with her family.

Stress-Free in PQ
LOCAL AUTHOR WRITES FIRST BOOK TO HELP RELIEVE STRESS
K
aren Kiser is a 92129 resident who is successfully helping people remove stress from their lives. The author and business owner – Karen runs a local Pilates studio – recently released her first book titled Lighten Your Load: 35 Surprisingly Simple Ways to Free Yourself from Stress, Toxins and Clutter, which has ranked as number one in nine of Amazon’s health-related book categories. The book focuses on helping readers discover the root of their stress while taking the necessary steps to get rid of it. In the book, Karen explains how stress is not caused by other people, jobs, or finances. It is instead a symptom, and at the root of it is what she calls “life garbage,” which are the toxins and clutter that can creep into your life. “I’ve worked with hundreds of women over the years, and I’ve done a lot of listening. What comes up over and over is stress. We’re overworked or over-scheduled,” Karen explained. “I wrote the book to be able to help even more people lighten their load and live lives of joy, radiant health, and sustainability, for themselves and for the planet.” Lighten Your Load took approximately one year for Karen to write. The local author did most of her writing in nature, putting in hours at the San Diego Botanic Garden and Lake Miramar. She also frequented the
Rancho Peñasquitos Library and local coffee shops to get her notes down on paper. Originally from Texas, Karen moved to San Diego in 1999. She’s lived in the Park Village community of PQ since 2000. “My favorite thing about living in 92129 is the proximity to nature. We’re five miles from the beach, 10 minutes from Lake Miramar, and just a short walk from the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve,” shared Karen. To learn more about Karen’s book and tips to de-stress visit www.karinkiser.com or email her at karin@parkvillagepilates.com.

ife may be busy for the Kelly family, but they love every moment. Sean is the senior pastor at Peñasquitos Lutheran Church and serves as chairman of the board for the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC), a national association of churches. Jenny is a teacher at Peñasquitos Christian Preschool. The family includes Sean and Jenny’s four sons – Lance, Kyle, Andrew, and Jack. “Lance and his wife live in Irvine with their two young children, Kane and Riley. Jack is in eighth grade at Mesa Verde Middle School. He plays clarinet in the school band and loves to play soccer,” stated Jenny. All four of the boys have also played Little League baseball, with Sean and Jenny participating as coach and team mom, respectively. the Minneapolis area. Since then, they have been a fixture in the local community. “Our entire family volunteers for our church and schools. Sean and I also help with various functions and needs for the Westview Gold Marching Band. Jack is an Eagle Ambassador at Mesa Verde, and Andrew volunteers on the tech team at church, running video and lighting for the Sunday evening service,” revealed Jenny. The family enjoys combining two of their passions: traveling and serving others. In 2014, Sean, Jenny, Andrew, and Jack went on a short-term mission trip to South Africa. “We visited the Transkei region on the Eastern Cape. On this trip, Sean taught for a week at the only Bible college in the Transkei. The college trains native Xhosa people to pastor local village churches,” related Jenny. During their time in the Transkei region, she and Jack also visited and served a local preschool, and Andrew helped with youth clinics throughout the trip. When at home in 92129, the Kellys enjoy spending time with their friends and with one another. Jenny shared, “We can often be found at the beautiful Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. We also love playing games at home and watching movies."

Future Cities
LOCAL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR CREATIVE CITY MODELS
L
ocal students from St. Michael’s School were recently among 40 teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students competing at the Southern California regional Future City Competition. The local event was held in Encinitas, and volunteers from the local engineering community served as judges. Nationwide, the competition includes over 40,000 students from 1,350 middle schools. The Future City program inspires students to explore the engineering design process, project management, and solutions to real-world problems. Students spend around four months creating their cities, which are designed to exist at least 100 years in the future. This year’s theme was Waste Not, Want Not, and students had to design a citywide solid waste management system. Teams submitted a 1,500-word essay outlining their solution to the theme; a virtual city slideshow; a to-scale city model made of recycled material with at least one moving part and a $100 budget; a seven-minute presentation to the judges; and a project plan outlining their process. Teams from St. Michael’s School won two special category awards. Hope Valley, designed and built by Allyson Atkins, Ann Palayur, and Vianna Schatz, was honored for Best Transportation. Luminous City, created by Annie Pehrson, Lauren Kogelman, and Madeline Duley, was the People’s Choice Award winner, selected by ballot.

North County Native TROY MERRELL AND CAMDEN MCKAY REALTY FOCUS ON CLIENTS’ NEEDS FIRST

amden McKay Realty was founded on a few basic principles: commitment to clients, consistent improvement, and cultivating relationships. “The basic philosophy of my real estate business is to do such an incredible job for my clients that they would adamantly recommend me to their friends and family,” shared Troy Merrell, co-owner of Camden McKay Realty. Troy has worked with clients across San Diego. He acknowledged, though, “I was born and raised here in North County and live in PQ so I don’t generally stray too far from here, but after 38 years I am comfortable working anywhere in San Diego.” Troy has been in the real estate business for the last decade. Camden McKay Realty opened its door two years ago; the business formed when he and the broker he had been working with for some time saw their ideals and visions aligning. Troy serves clients both buying and selling. “I enjoy the hunt for the right property as much as developing the marketing strategy for selling a home,” he explained. “With buyers I feel I offer guidance that only comes from
agents that are truly focused on the client’s needs.” That guidance includes assistance in finding a lender, clear explanations of the home buying process, and creating the best position for a client’s offer to be accepted. “With sellers I use everything at my disposal to help my clients get exactly what they are aiming for when selling their home,” Troy said. He utilizes professionals for video, photography, staging, and copywriting. “To sell a home right, it takes time and preparation.” Troy advises that it is never too early to involve a real estate agent when considering buying or selling. “We don’t cost anything to talk to, although I admit we can be hard to get rid of,” he joked. The difference at Camden McKay Realty, Troy related, is “We do not believe in using high-pressure sales tactics to gain clients. We are happy to help even nosey neighbors.” He encourages people to call him with any questions, “even if you just want to know how much your neighbor’s home just sold for,” he stated. “I am happy to help even if your not in the market to buy or sell.”

eing happy and cheerful comes naturally to Kari Shea, a wife, mother, entrepreneur, blogger, and personal coach. “Celebrate each day. Finding the good in each moment is a deliberate choice,” reflected Kari. She and her husband Mark Shea raised their son Skyler in 92129 after relocating from Los Angeles when he was a toddler. Skyler graduated last year from Westview High School and now attends Sonoma State University. Their 14-year-old pug, Ketchup, fills in the family. Kari and Mark are the creative team behind 611 Development Inc., a residential real estate investment firm. Giving back through volunteerism is also a driving force behind Kari’s mindfulness. Kari got involved with the Westview High School PTSA in 2012 at the suggestion of her friend, Sue Melnick. She is serving her second year as president of the board, and mentioned, “I’m focused on instilling empowerment, creating harmony, and having fun, not just within the PTSA but the school as a whole.” She described how board members and Principal Todd Cassen possess wholeheartedness and dedication. “They have a genuine love for what they do which is inspiring,” added Kari.
32 • 92129Magazine.com • April | May 2016
She knows it takes a village to raise funds for student programs. The PTSA launched a new website and ecommunications. The annual Grad Nite celebrates seniors’ experiences and achievements – and parent volunteers are encouraged to join through PTSA. Kari explained, “Being a volunteer makes a tangible, long-lasting difference that ripples outward, benefiting not just students of the current year but those of generations to come.” It’s her way of honoring the gratitude she and Mark have in the school’s support for Skyler. In 2010, their son had a serious concussion with significant complications. His recovery took years as he strengthened and found CrossFit, and now competes in Spartan obstacle races. She is in awe of the compassion that the PTSA and others extended to their family. Next year, Kari will turn her focus to the international expansion of The One Love Movement, a nonprofit that works to better the lives of underprivileged youth. You can learn more about the organization at www.jointheonelovemovement.org. As for now, she reflected, “I’d love nothing more than to see Westview PTSA continue to grow and flourish as a diverse, tight-knit, and supportive community.”

PERSONALIZED TOUCH Massage Heights Body + Face Treats Its Clients Like Family by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos provided by Massage Heights Body + Face
I
t’s a known fact that brushing your teeth can prevent cavities. It’s also common knowledge that exercising and eating right can help keep you in shape. But did you know that regular massage therapy is preventive medicine as well? Nathan Knecht, Owner of Massage Heights Body + Face in Rancho Peñasquitos, explained that health benefits from massage include lowering blood pressure, improving range of motion, strengthening the immune system, improving circulation, and providing asthma relief. “Massage Heights is a company dedicated to the belief that therapeutic massage is not a luxury, but rather an affordable, smart lifestyle choice that – when received regularly – improves your overall mood, health, and well-being,” said Nathan. The Massage Heights Rancho Peñasquitos location opened its doors in November 2015. “My inspiration for opening this store is due to my personal journey dealing with chronic back pain for the past 15 years,” shared Nathan, who had previously worked as a general dentist. “I developed back pain soon after graduating from dental school in 2001.” To alleviate his back pain, Nathan would regularly receive massage therapy, which enabled him to continue his career as a dentist for another 10 years. “In 2011, I received a medical recommendation to seek career alternatives due to the daily spinal trauma caused by work-related posture,” he recalled. So Nathan sold his practice and ultimately decided to pursue a career as a Massage Heights franchise owner. “Massage Heights is a family-owned company with core values and a culture that is more reflective of a ‘mom and pop’ business than a multi-unit international franchise,” explained Nathan. “Every Massage Heights spa is community-focused.” On that note, Massage Heights is currently partnering with two local businesses – Drawn2Art and We Rock the Spectrum Kids’ Gym – to provide an upcoming “Parents Night Out,” where parents can drop their children for an activity while they enjoy a 60 or 90-minute couples massage. “The kids learn or stay active while the parents relax,” said Nathan. “Everybody wins, and there’s no need for a babysitter!” Another way Massage Heights stays connected with the community is by supporting local charities such as the Alabaster Jar Project, a resource center for survivors of human trafficking. So what can one expect from a typical visit to Massage Heights? “Our guests will experience a personalized, upscale experience,” described Nathan. “From our Ritz-Carlton microfiber linens to our heated massage tables, everything is elevated at Massage Heights.” Even with the upscale experience, Massage Heights offers services that are 50 to 70 percent less than those offered at a resort. The spa – conveniently open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. – provides all modalities of massage therapy and offers upgraded services called Elevations, including Hot Stone Therapy, Reviving Foot Scrub, Revitalizing Face Massage, Active Sports Therapy, and Aromatherapy. “We also offer European Facials and Pressure Point Facials,” stated Nathan.

Del Mar Pines School’s New Building
Mexican By Birth
Jorge Vargas, a professor of law at the USD School of Law, has researched and written a book on the California gray whale. His book, Mexican By Birth, was written to provide an introduction to the whale’s origin, habits, and especially the threats to their survival. Jorge has written numerous books on both American and Mexican law, but was inspired to write the informative piece on whales after being captivated by the beauty and majesty of the species during a visit to Magdalena Bay, Baja California, many years ago. “The more we learn and are informed about these magnificent cetaceans, the more they deserve our respect and admiration,” shared Jorge. Born in Mexico, Jorge has now been a resident of 92129 for almost 56 years. He donated two copies of Mexican By Birth – one in English and one in Spanish – to the Rancho Peñasquitos Branch Library, where they are available for checkout.
Supportive Housing Bill
Assembly Bill 1500 recently passed unanimously through the State Assembly. The legislation, by San Diego Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, aims to allow local governments to create more housing opportunities for the homeless. “I am pleased that my bill, which would enable cities and counties to plan for the construction of supportive and transitional housing projects, passed the Assembly,” said Maienschein. “Many of our homeless also suffer from some form of mental illness, and these individuals are the ones who have the greatest need for stable housing.” The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that there were 115,738 homeless Californians in 2015 – 21 percent of the homeless population nationwide. Many social service experts in the state advocate housing-first strategy; by offering safe, secure housing, individuals and families are better able to make use of other necessary services and opportunities to get back on their feet.
Northwestern Division Gets Life-Saving AEDs photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
Del Mar Pines School, a leading private kindergarten through sixth grade school in Carmel Valley, has announced the completion of its new two-story building. A new building was a longtime dream of school Director Marci McCord. With the help of the Del Mar Pines Foundation for Education, parents, alumni, and the Gallagher family, that dream came true. Funded and built in under a year, the vision for the new building was not to add more students but to offer current students more. “I am very excited about the new opportunities for learning and deeper exploration our students can now benefit from,” said Marci. The campus expansion created a new sixth grade classroom and library. It also made room for a dedicated science and Spanish lab and performing arts room. Learn more at www.delmarpines.com.

The San Diego Police Department’s Northwestern Division recently received 14 automated external defibrillators (AED), delivered by City Councilman Mark Kersey and City Council President Sherri Lightner, from San Diego Fire-Rescue’s Project Heartbeat. The Northwestern Division has now joined the SDPD’s Northeastern Division in having each of their patrol cars equipped with the life-saving technology, which is used to treat sudden cardiac arrest by transmitting electric shocks to the heart. Funding for the AEDs was authorized by Councilman Mark and Council President Sherri through their respective Community Programs, Projects and Services (CPPS) funds. The Northwestern Division serves a population of 70,822 and encompasses an area of 41.6 square miles including the communities of Black Mountain Ranch, Carmel Valley, and Sorrento Valley. PQ Library’s How-To Festival
The Rancho Peñasquitos Branch Library will be one of four locations across San Diego to host a free How-To Festival for the community. The festival will host a variety of peer-to-peer learning experiences taught by locals who have volunteered to share their talents with others. Some presentation examples include How to Draw Star Wars Characters, How to Dance Salsa, and How to Take Your Relationship from Good to Great. “I am most excited by the fact that this is an opportunity for people in our communities to engage with each other,” said Rancho Peñasquitos Branch Manager Adrianne Peterson. “The Festival celebrates experiential and peer-to-peer learning, and is a wonderful way for individuals to share and connect with their community.” The festival will take place May 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will feature approximately 12 classes, with three classes occurring concurrently during the four hour event. To learn more visit www.sandiego.gov/public-library.
Girl Scout Gives Back
Mesa Verde Middle School student Taylor Johnson recently gave back to her community in a big way. On an old grain silo by the entrance of Canyonside Stables in 92129, Taylor painted a mural representing what Rancho Peñasquitos would have looked like 100 years ago. To depict an accurate image, Taylor worked closely with park rangers from the Black Mountain Rd. station to collect documents and photos showing what PQ was like when mostly populated by ranchers. Taylor is a part of local Girl Scout Troop 8810, and took on this project to earn her Silver Award. She was largely helped by paint donations from Home Depot, as well as a $300 donation from the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council that allowed her to purchase supplies and wood chips. On what she took away from the project, Taylor shared, “I think the most rewarding aspect has been learning about time management and learning to become more responsible.”
Farmers Market Grand Opening
Saturdays in PQ just got a little fresher. With healthy living in mind, the Rancho Family YMCA is officially opening the PQ Certified Farmers Market, sponsored by the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council (RPTC), to offer 92129 fresh local produce from certified producers. “When the RPTC surveyed the community about a farmers market over 18 months ago, the message was clear: PQ is ripe for a certified farmers market! The RPTC is thrilled to be a sponsor,” said RPTC’s Darshana Patel. The market’s grand opening will be held April 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot on the corner of Fairgrove Ln. and Salmon River Rd. Guests can enjoy live music, speakers from the community, and more. The market, which will offer a variety of certified and noncertifiable agricultural products, is currently still accepting vendor applications. To learn more visit www.ymca.org/rancho.
Local Author Releases Debut Novel
Joel Dorr recently published his first novel, a romantic-comedy titled Those Crazy Notions of Otherwise Intelligent People. The story, set in San Diego, follows the lives of radio show host and playboy Percy Powers, and Ilena Doran, a dedicated mother and therapist for abused women. A heartfelt romance unfolds. ”I really wanted to craft a romance novel from more of a male perspective. Little known secret, ladies: men like to read romance too – especially if it is funny,” said Joel. Before moving to San Diego, Joel wrote for TV and movies in L.A. Joel, who moved with his family to PQ 14 years ago, did much of his writing at local spots, including Wonderful Sushi, Golden Bagel, and Bad Ass Coffee. Recently, at his book launch party held at Wonderful Sushi, guests donated to Becky’s House, a shelter for abused women. “It warms my heart to see the generosity of my community, which is why I call PQ home,” shared Joel. Southern California Ballet’s 30th Anniversary photo by Vladimir Zabezhinsky
In 1985, Sylvia Palmer founded the nonprofit Black Mountain Dance Foundation. Over the years, the foundation, doing business as Southern California Ballet (SCB), has earned a reputation as San Diego’s premiere youth ballet company. This year marks their 30th Anniversary, which has been cause for celebration. SCB recently held a fundraiser banquet to honor Sylvia and her husband Mark Zetler at the Del Mar Hilton. Guests were treated to dinner, dancing, a silent auction, and a video presentation with testimonials of thanks from successful past students. To further celebrate this milestone, SCB will host a performance at the Poway Performing Arts Center on April 23 at 7 p.m., with a 5:30 p.m. pre-performance reception. The performance will include Peter and the Wolf, In the Midst of a Southern Storm, and the wedding scene of The Sleeping Beauty, performed by the company, academy, and six alumni dancers. The performance is open to the public and tickets can be purchased at www.southerncaliforniaballet.org. Use the code “ZIP” for a $2 discount on regular priced tickets.

:::: SPECIAL FEATURE { RANCHO FAMILY YMCA
FARMERS MARKET GRAND OPENING }
While we love to support favorite traditions, this year we hope to start a new one. We have been working with the Rancho Family YMCA to bring a Certified Farmers Market to our own community! This market will feature a variety of harvests from our own local farmers, as well as delicious choices from local food trucks. This fits right in with the Y’s mission and PQ’s desire to have locally sourced, fresh farm products. The Farmers Market will open April 30 and will return every Saturday throughout the year.
{ PARADE } This year, encouraged by positive feedback, we will bring back an improved PQ Community Parade. We’ve changed the route – parade participants will start at Mt. Carmel High School, swing right on Paseo Montalban, and finish at the Fiesta (see map). We are certainly looking forward to participation from community groups, schools, teams, scouts, block parties, clubs, and other PQ-themed organizations. We are still finalizing our Hometown Hero Grand Marshal and it’s not too late to sign up your group to participate – visit our website for details. The PQ Community Parade provides another fun way to showcase the diversity of our community!

{ DONORS } The RPTC would not be able to bring the ever-growing and vibrant Fiesta de los Peñasquitos to our community each year without the generous contributions from our local government offices. They take as much pride in supporting us as we do in bringing the Fiesta to you each year. This year we received support from County Supervisor Dave Roberts and the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Program, as well as the City of San Diego Creative Communities San Diego Program supplemented with additional funding from District 5 City Councilman Mark Kersey and District 6 City Councilman Chris Cate. We sincerely express our gratitude for their continued community support. Additionally, we appreciate the continued in-kind contributions from 92129 Magazine, San Diego Family Magazine, and Allies Party Rentals. It’s support from local businesses like these that make our annual community fiesta possible.
{ SPONSORS }
{ COMMUNITY AWARDS }
{ SCHOOL SPIRIT BOOTH }
Each year, the RPTC offers sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, organizations, and residents for our Fiesta. By choosing to sponsor the Fiesta, these organizations have shown their dedication to our community. The profits from the Fiesta return directly to the community in the form of community grants, local events, and improvements in our community. The San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) is proudly supporting PQ through its Premier Sponsorship of our Fiesta for a third consecutive year.
Each year, the RPTC is proud to recognize the community service contributions of 12 local students, one adult volunteer, and one business or organization. Winners of these community awards, along with our Fiesta Theme Art Contest winner, will be invited to participate in a Fiesta ceremony, where they will be publicly recognized by the community, the RPTC, and our local elected officials.
We are thrilled to present the 3rd Annual PQ School Spirit Booth. Totals from last year’s 2nd Annual PQ School Spirit Booth include $888 donated by our community, $185 from the RPTC for free tickets to donors wearing school logo apparel, and another $500 from the TC for the school with the most tickets. Last year, Sunset Hills took the grand prize again! That’s a total of $1,573 that our 12 local PQ schools received after last year’s event!
The Premier Sponsorship package includes both Main Stage and Banner District sponsor levels. Through SDCCU’s continued support of the Fiesta and the Banner District, they are proving that people really do come first. SDCCU is not only locally owned, but was voted San Diego’s Best Credit Union for its 16th year in a row! Local branch manager Jeff Barger welcomes all residents to come into the PQ branch location in the Towne Center Shopping Plaza to learn how SDCCU can serve you. Is your organization interested in showing its support for our community through being a Fiesta Sponsor? Would you like to have a full-page, half-page, or business cardsize advertisement in our 21st Annual Fiesta Program? It’s not too late. There are still sponsorship and advertising opportunities available. Visit the Fiesta website or email fiesta.rptc@gmail.com.
Twelve outstanding students – one from each of our twelve PQ public schools – are recognized for their community service efforts with Youth Community Service Awards. Fifth and eighth grade winners are nominated by their schools, while at the high school level, one graduating senior from each high school will be awarded the $500 scholarship through a direct application selection process. Additionally, the RPTC will recognize the exceptional community service efforts of one Volunteer of the Year and one Business/ Organization of the Year. The name of the Volunteer of the Year will be added to the engraved plaque installed at Hilltop Park, and the Business of the Year will be featured for a full year on the RPTC website. Join us at the main stage during the opening ceremonies to see who our winners will be!
{ RPTC ELECTIONS } One of the many interesting things going on at the RPTC booth will be the annual election of your neighborhood representatives. The Rancho de los Peñasquitos Town Council consists of elected and appointed volunteers from eight districts laid out to coincide with the elementary school boundaries in PQ. Every year there is at least one elected position open in every district. The benefit of being elected, rather than appointed, is that elected members may run for a position on the Executive Board or Committee Chair position, which can have a significant impact on how the resident can serve our community and set priorities. Our current areas of focus include building a business community for Rancho Peñasquitos, celebrating our community volunteers, and a commitment to civic engagement.
Remember that every dollar donated will go directly back to the schools, and don’t forget to wear your school shirt when you stop by the booth again this year with a few bucks for your school or alma mater. Will Sunset Hills win for a third year in a row? Can your school rally together to win the big cash prize? We can’t wait to find out. For more information visit www.rpcouncil.com or email education.rptc@gmail.com.
{ ENTERTAINMENT } If all of this does not seem like enough, we have lined up a wonderful set of live performances, displays, and rides. This year’s line up includes Step-by-Step Dance, Gyminny Kids Demo Team, returning acts Nitro Express Band, Bayou Brothers, and new acts such as Martin Coughlin and the Reverbnation, as well as AM Gold Band. We are also excited to have singer-songwriter Alyssa Walker perform. The 16-year-old PQ native and recent 92129 Magazine Student Star co-hosts a weekly Open Mic and performs in monthly shows at the Company Pub. For Fiesta regulars, we will have carnival rides, the Mad Hatter in the Kids Pavilion, Kool Katz Tatz face-painting, pony rides, Slow Lane Familia classic cars, and a petting zoo. Don’t forget to pick up the Fiesta map at the RPTC booth to guide you though your day.
The RPTC is always looking for capable new members to infuse fresh energy, ideas, and perspectives, so if you think that sounds like you, fill out a candidate application online at www.rpcouncil.com/join. The deadline is April 19 so don’t delay! Active participation in our community is the basis for all positive growth. So, before you forget with all the excitement of Fiesta Day, stop by at the Fiesta 2015 elections ballot station in the RPTC booth and cast your vote.

Because the venue has five large dance studios, three music and singing/recording studios, an acting studio, and a Pilates studio, RAPA offers a wide range of camps throughout the whole summer. “We have the largest facility in San Diego at over 15,000 square feet, so we are able to offer more variety of dance camps along with acting camps, voice camps, film making, musical theater camps, and ballet intensives. We even offer a triple talent camp which combines acting, singing, and dance for those who wish to pursue a career in the industry,” said RAPA Owner and Director Francine Garton. “Our teachers are experienced, nurturing, and go above and beyond to ensure each camp is structured around the children’s needs. Children are invited to attend our camps whether they are a beginner or an experienced dancer, as we have so many options!” In addition to the wide variety of classes, there is also a wide variety of schedules and price points to suit everyone’s needs. These include a meet and greet, arts and crafts, a dress-up day, and a performance for family and friends. Intensives feature celebrity choreographers, including teachers from the Bolshoi Ballet and the Royal Ballet who fly in specifically to teach these summer ballet intensives. On the importance of offering engaging summer camps, Francine shared, “I have four children, so I know summer is long if they are not
occupied. At our summer camps, children make new friends and grow in so many ways, whether it is in technical ability, confidence or just stepping out of their comfort zone. Our summer camp students have so much fun, learn so much, and are inspired and motivated each and every day.” Whether a child is a beginner looking to learn the basics, or more advanced with a desire to master technical skills, RAPA’s summer programs offer choices for everyone.

THERAPEUTIC LITERACY CENTER
W
hile summer vacation offers ample time for students to run, play, and exercise their bodies, it also offers the perfect opportunity to exercise their minds. During the busy school year, students may not get the one-on-one time with a teacher or tutor nor the therapy to develop their underlying weaknesses in learning skills. This is where the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) comes in. While the center, located in Solana Beach, offers specialized training to students year-round, they utilize the extra time that summer affords by offering specialized camp programs to prepare children for success when school starts in the fall. Their summer programming includes an intensive therapy to overcome challenges and learning disabilities by focusing on underlying learning skills, as well as a learning “bootcamp” for children that are strong in their underlying skills but need work in the areas of math, handwriting, or keyboarding. All of TLC’s programs can help a student be successful in the Common Core curriculum. TLC’s summer programs include both group learning experiences and individualized one-on-one sessions, provided by specially trained clinicians. If a full-day program is chosen, the day may even include outings to a surf camp in Solana Beach or an activity at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. “A cognitive bootcamp mixed with hours of outdoor exercise is the perfect summer combination for children wanting to enter their next grade level with confidence in their success,” said Maria Bagby, TLC Executive Director. Because spaces fill up quickly, early registration is encouraged. To learn more about TLC and how they can help eliminate learning challenges in reading, writing, and math visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200.

W
hile North County Soccer Park (NCSP) lets children get in on the action with soccer and baseball classes year-round, they provide even more in-depth morning lessons during their summer camp sessions. From June to August, NCSP – the longest running arena soccer facility in Southern California – invites local children of any skill level to learn about soccer and baseball while having fun and making friends on the field. “Our soccer and baseball camps are for any boy or girl, regardless of skill, who are 4-12 years old,” said NCSP’s David Brennan. Each camp session runs for one week per month, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. During a typical day, all campers participate in a combined group warm-up, before breaking up into their age and skill-appropriate groups for the rest of the morning. With a small coach-to-camper ratio, coaches are able to interact personally and get to know each camper, thus better providing them with lessons of sportsmanship, skill development, and safety. In addition to the wellqualified coaching staff, NCSP offers versatile facilities that include both turf and grass fields. With fun always being the focus, David said, “We know it’s been a great camp day when the kids are smiling, laughing, and talking to mom or dad about what they learned that day.” Soccer camps run different weeks from baseball camps, with the exception of August. This summer, NCSP’s soccer camps run June 13-17, July 11-15, and Aug. 8-12. Baseball camps will run June 20-24, July 18-22, and Aug. 8-12. The cost of $130 per camper includes their camp shirt given to them the first day, a concession drink every day, and award certificate on the final day of camp. MATHNASIUM SUMMER PROGRAMS W
ith school out of session, summer can be tons of fun – but it can also lead to a loss of academic skills called the “summer slide.” Luckily, Mathnasium is here to stop the decline! Students can close gaps from the previous year, deepen problem solving skills, build up their mastery of math facts and number sense, get a refresher for an upcoming course, or get a head start on skills they will learn in the new year. The summer program offers drop-in sessions for students in grades 1 to 12. The initial assessment helps the talented Mathnasium team develop an individualized learning plan for each student, and later, a progress report to document growth and achievement by the end of summer. The Mathnasium Method has demonstrated great success in helping kids catch up, keep up, or get ahead in math. Call now!

T
his summer the Rancho Family YMCA offers kids and teens the chance to explore, create, and imagine through a variety of camps and programs. Summer camps are separated by grade level to allow campers to develop friendships and learn with their peers. Camp Director Sarah Trujillo said, “Y camp is F.A.B. We believe that children thrive in environments where they can create FRIENDSHIPS, gain a sense of ACHIEVEMENT, and feel a sense of BELONGING. It is our priority to ensure that whether your child is with us for one week or ten that they leave Y camp with new friends, new experiences, and a place to call their own.” This summer, the Rancho Family YMCA is hosting 24 brand new camps and many favorites including Equestrian & More, Kids in the Kitchen, and multiple LEGO-themed camps. The Rancho Family YMCA believes that every child should have the opportunity to experience Y camp, and through generous donations from the community are able to provide financial assistance and reasonable additional support to campers with special needs. OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS
I
nspired by 14 summers of camp experience as a camper, counselor, and director, Stuart Jones decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps, after moving to San Diego in 2001. As the current owners and directors of the camp, Stuart and his wife Kelly strive to provide children with a traditional camp experience that they deserve, complete with outdoor adventures and lasting friendships. A summer at Outpost is free from distraction, as the programs are 100 percent outdoors and device-free – the directors call it “outside and unplugged.” The camps are open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Camps have been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association and have also received Markel Insurance’s coveted Safety First designation for many consecutive seasons with a perfect safety record. Stuart and his wife both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested eight to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. THE INSPIRED MIND LEARNING CENTER
E
stablished in 2013, The Inspired Mind Learning Center inspires children in grades K-12 to achieve greater academic success with the help of math tutoring, STEM classes, and test prep courses. When the center introduced their first camp program during winter 2014, it was so wildly successful that they expanded their programs to the summer, providing students with a more in-depth experience. “Our camps are academically challenging and intellectually stimulating,” said David Robins, the center’s founder. “We expect students to learn the material presented to them and be able to apply it to the projects they create. Our camps are both fun and educational.” Inspired Mind Learning Center’s summer camps utilize project-based learning that helps develop skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and creativity, and collaboration. Programs such as coding and robotics are offered for older students, while younger students can enjoy camps like Dino-Roar! or Art Smart. This summer, the center is also bringing back their popular CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Weird Science camps. Camps rotate by age groups, with one week focused on kindergartners through fifth grade, and the next week switching to grades six through nine. For each age group, parents can choose between half-day (one subject) or full-day (two subjects) programs. “Every activity is designed to ignite children’s natural curiosity and provides the opportunity to develop critical skills they will use their entire life,” said David. With a dedicated staff and high quality programming, The Inspired Mind Learning Center can provide campers with a summer experience that allows them to bring home fun hand-made projects and a new love for learning. CODEREV KIDS
W
ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of ten different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 14 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John Stuppy believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education, and to get students excited about using math and science. MOBILE TECH SUMMER CAMP
W
hen Dr. Korey Sewell, the founder of Hands-On Technology’s Mobile Tech Summer Camp, placed his son in an after-school program to build Legos, it excited them both about access to technology for youth. But something was missing – why were kids consuming technology rather than designing it? And with that, the Mobile Tech Summer Camp was born. “Mobile Tech Summer Camp is the first camp of its kind to design a cohesive mobile technology program with an emphasis on computer science and electrical engineering for rising third through sixth graders (ages 9-13),” explained Dr. Sewell, executive director and head curriculum designer of Hands-On Technology Education. With two-week sessions offered from June 27 to Aug. 5 at Wangenheim Middle School, students are provided with an exciting curriculum that challenges and entertains each camper based on their levels of knowledge and experience. In either the Introduction to Mobile Technology or the Intermediate Mobile Technology sessions, kids create cool projects involving tablets, Android apps, electrical circuits, and video games. More fun is added with special days that feature Mobile Tech Olympics, Career Day with a variety of local engineers, movie day, field trips to places like the San Diego Fab Lab, and even outdoor activities. “Our philosophy is an ‘Exposure not Exhaustion’ approach to technology. Once kids are truly engaged, they will willingly spend loads of time building what they love,” added Dr. Sewell. By the end of camp, kids are building Android apps, simple video games, and making intricate electrical circuits from scratch. This is technology built by kids who are gaining confidence in our high-tech world – learn more at www.hands-on-mobile.com/summer16.

IM and their team of highly qualified and experienced instructors strive to share their passion for dance with students of all ages and experience levels. “We want everyone to experience the joy of dance, and IM provides that type of environment for not only the dancer, but the whole family!” said Jenna Saylor, IM Owner and Director. Inspired Movement offers specialized week-long summer camp experiences for ages five to eight, and nine and up. Each age group can choose from programs that focus on musical theater, hip hop, ballet, jazz, contemporary, and more. Intensives are also offered for more advanced dancers. During intensives, dancers have the opportunity to learn from professional master teachers. Intensive programs, as well as all programs for students nine and up, are full days, while those ages five to eight participate in half days. Summer camps mainly consist of dance instruction, but students will also enjoy arts and crafts, games, and other fun activities. While IM primarily prides themselves on their excellent dance programs and supportive atmosphere, they acknowledge that safety is a priority. “Inspired Movement is a safe and healthy environment,” said Jenna. Dancers must be checked in and signed out at the front desk each day, and are supervised at all times to ensure a fun and safe experience. by KELLEY GUSICH | photo provided by Carmel Mountain Dental Care
ocated at the Northeast corner of Carmel Mountain and Black Mountain Roads, Carmel Mountain Dental Care (CMDC) was established in the early 1980s. In 2008, H. Jonathan Lee, DMD, acquired the practice upon retirement of the founding doctors. Prior to CMDC, Dr. Lee practiced dentistry in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, shortly after receiving his doctorate at Boston University. His love for San Diego started earlier during his undergraduate studies at UCSD. Dr. Lee had a vision to bring the small-town, relational dentistry he experienced back to San Diego, and Rancho Peñasquitos was the perfect fit. A feeling of small town hospitality is evident from the moment you walk in the office. New patients are always given a tour, hot and cold beverages are available during the short wait, and all of the treatment rooms are equipped with TVs, blankets, music, and coloring materials for younger visitors – or for any visitors who want to color! Dr. Lee’s patients seemed to appreciate his approach as CMDC has grown over the years. Patient Linda B. shared, “It’s tough to mix top-notch professionalism with warmth. Dr. Lee and his staff have pulled it off! This office makes going to the dentist a pleasure!” In 2015, Dr. Marisa Lee joined the growing practice to help maintain the high standard

of care and attention patients have come to expect. Dr. Lee and Dr. Marisa both rely on the rest of the CMDC team comprised of four dental assistants, six hygienists, and six office team members. An orthodontist (for braces) and endodontist (for root canals) are also available for patients. While the back office team is treating and educating patients about their oral health, the front office team is diligently scheduling appointments, and helping patients navigate the complexities of dental insurance and understand the costs of treatment. For those without insurance, CMDC is an exclusive provider of Quality Dental Plan, a dental savings plan which can provide all the necessary routine dental services for less than $300 per year (a family of four is only $880 per year) as well as significant discounts on additional treatment. Whether it’s taking the time to explain a treatment plan or calling a dental insurance company to verify benefits, Carmel Mountain Dental Care goes the extra mile for their patients and prospective patients. This is why so many in Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch, and neighboring communities consider Carmel Mountain Dental Care their family dentist. One of Dr. Lee’s goals for CMDC is to give back to the communities
which have accepted him so warmly over the years. CMDC sponsors the Rancho Peñasquitos and 4S Ranch Little Leagues, Rancho Family YMCA, and other local organizations. Dr. Lee expressed, “Carmel Mountain Dental Care is not just about treating teeth. We are caring people caring for people.”

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD
STARGAZING IN SAN DIEGO
These Breathtaking Views Will Have You Seeing Stars – Literally by SHYANNE LOPEZ
B
eing surrounded by beaches, beautiful landscapes, and a sprawling city, it's no wonder we tend to keep our eyes focused on what is laid out right in front of us. While known for its sunny and clear skies, come sunset, parts of San Diego's skyline are anything but empty – you just have to look up. For years, the area has attracted professional and amateur astronomers and stargazers alike for the highly accessible view of not just stars but also our own galaxy and nearby planets. In fact, this spring, Mars will be the largest and most clear that it's been in more than a decade. It's the perfect occasion to bring out your inner astronomer. While it's tough to stargaze in highly developed areas, you can view them with ease at various rural locations in and around the county that have remained virtually untouched by city lights. So, if you're interested in catching a glimpse of the cosmos this spring, jump in your car and check out one – or all – of these unique destinations.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Two hours east of San Diego, you can find California's largest state park. The desert is a hot spot for professional and amateur stargazers due to its seclusion from urban lights. In fact, the park's neighboring town of Borrego Springs was designated in 2009 as the second "Dark Sky Community" in the world by the International Sky Association, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the nighttime environment.
Tierra Del Sol
Julian
Located in southeastern San Diego County is the Tierra Del Sol observing site. Established by the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA), the site is home to monthly star parties that are open to the public. Star parties offer visitors the opportunity to observe the sky through professional telescopes, and receive guided viewings from experienced astronomers. Learn more at www.sdaa.org.
Primarily known for its apple orchards, this quaint mountain town actually has night skies dark enough to host the SDAA's annual Julian StarFest each summer. This spring, you can admire and explore their starry skies by checking out nearby campgrounds or parks. If you don't feel like roughing it, the town also boasts its own astronomy-themed bed and breakfast.

Torrey Pines State Reserve While you won't see as many stars from Torrey Pines State Reserve, just north of La Jolla, it offers darker skies than expected and doesn't require a road trip. The beach offers the perfect location to look up at the cosmos, complete with the sound of crashing waves. Torrey Pines stays open until 11 p.m., and since it won't be peak visiting hours, catching road-side parking should be a cinch.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Get the Most from Your Sale by Troy Merrell
A
seller’s market presents unique opportunities but, if you are not careful, even a hot seller’s market can be relegated to a wasted opportunity. It’s easy to get caught up in the allure of an excellent real estate market. It is critical to approach it with a sound strategy and to understand what you are up against and how to maximize your efforts. Below are a few common mistakes that can undermine even the best of seller’s markets. Just because there is a potential to make a large profit from your home doesn’t mean it is going to happen. Real estate is a fickle industry and its economic landscape is ever-changing. Not to mention, buyers’ circumstances change. The marks of overconfident sellers are often three-fold. • First, they overprice their house assuming that demand will justify it. When buyers see that your home is well above normal market value, they will look elsewhere. As a rule of thumb: the fewer buyers interested in your home, the worse your prospect
of selling for top dollar becomes. Ask yourself: would you buy an overpriced home? • Second, overconfidence breeds a lack of due diligence. In terms of selling a house, this often occurs with the buyer vetting process. In a seller’s market, buyers will likely see houses that they are considering being bought quickly. This atmosphere can create desperation and some buyers react by bidding beyond their means. Although they may have the best of intentions, this will likely lead to problems with the sale. • Lastly, never celebrate too soon. Even well-intentioned buyers have to pull out of a purchase at times. Real estate contracts have many requirements and it only takes one to be unfulfilled to kill a deal. Communication with your agent is vital to understanding where the sale stands. Are you looking to sell your home but want to make the most of the current market? It’s never to soon to talk to a professional. Give me a call. Whether you’re buying or selling today or next year, I’m happy to help.
