Introducing Everything Homez Magazine
I
Publisher Derrick Breaux Director of Business Development Jessica Breaux Associate Editors Lainey Kral Randi Cantrell Shyanne Lopez ZCOD E MAGA ZINE’ S
t would be nearly impossible for me to say how many times people ask me if I know of a good contractor. A good painter. A solar company to call for an estimate. A handyman. A flooring company. A plumber. The list goes on and on. Everyone that knows me understands that I like to build stuff – or have stuff built for me when possible. As a kid growing up in EVERYTHING Texas, that’s just what people did. If a family HOMEZ MAGAZINE member needed to add a room onto their house, the entire family got together for a couple of months in the afternoons after their day jobs and built the room addition. I grew up thinking that everyone knew how to build stuff. It wasn’t until I moved out to Southern California as a teenager that I realized that this wasn’t the “norm” everywhere. When I talked to people about my experience helping to install a roof on my uncle’s house as a young teenager, I think most people thought I was making it up. For the past couple of years, I have been talking to 92129 Magazine readers about this issue. Everyone seemed to agree that it is often difficult to find reliable contractors, home-related products, and Derrick Breaux similar services. The general consensus was that it would be extremely Publisher convenient to have a section within the pages of this magazine that focused specifically on the home. So, today I am proud to officially introduce to you Everything Homez Magazine – a magazine within the pages of 92129 Magazine (see page 51). The goal of Everything Homez is to provide you with information on all types of products and services related to the home improvement industry. The Everything Homez section will be in every issue moving forward. You can expect to see the number of pages grow as businesses that fall within the “homez” category commit to participating – it is destined to become the ultimate ‘go-to’ resource for home improvement. Our ZCode Media team will be working diligently to seek out additional businesses in all subcategories of Everything Homez. However, if you know of a great company that fits in this category that you would like to refer, please send them our way. It’s always good to work with companies that come highly recommended by you! If you have a home improvement project in the works, please check out Everything Homez to see if there is a local company that can assist. GUID E TO EVER YTHIN G

dward Cox grew up as an Air Force kid, primarily in Florida. Being on the move came naturally. While he and his family are now settled in 92129, he finds freedom on long drives. “We can easily take a drive out to the beach or the desert,” shared Ed. “So many great views all around. I am a huge fan of the San Diego lifestyle and I think a big part of that is the driving culture. It is definitely the best city in the U.S. to own a convertible.” As the CEO of everyStory, a story-sharing app available on iOS, Android, and the internet, Ed’s chapters continue to unfold. He attended the University of Florida for both his undergraduate degree in telecommunications and his master’s in management from the university’s Warrington College of Business. His passion to enter the film business carried him to Los Angeles, where he worked in film post-production. He became an executive of a film technology start-up, which led to executive roles in sectors from biotech to consumer health and technology. He’s entering his second year with everyStory. everyStory was founded by his business partner, Dave Keen. When Dave was diagnosed with colon cancer, his son was just a year old. He wanted him to know his voice and to hear his stories. Dave is now cancer free – but these life experiences motivated the launch of everyStory. Anyone can record their stories with uploaded photos secured in the cloud. Users can invite others to join and share their memories. “My father-in-law, who was a great storyteller, passed away from colon cancer,” revealed Ed. “A few months after that, my first child was born. Those two events made me realize just how precious stories really are and that we must do everything we can to preserve them.” More than anything, Ed reminisced that he loves being a dad. “My daughter is amazing,” he added. “I’m absolutely crazy about my wife and daughter.” When he finds the free time, Ed enjoys watching college football and movies, especially, he described, the “big, epic blockbusters.” Everyone’s stories matter, and Ed’s love of stories is what makes him passionate about the work he does.

Making History 92129 STUDENTS COLLABORATE ON WEBCOMIC SET DURING CIVIL WAR
T
hree Westview High School juniors have put their minds and talents together to launch a webcomic following the stories of four teens residing in the south during the American Civil War. The series was just published in the summer of 2015, and new pages will be released every Sunday by twin sisters Brooke and Lindsay Bernas, and their friend Sarah Henwood. The comic, titled Lost Cause, came to be after Lindsay created a character that inspired Brooke and Sarah to create their own. Thus, the young southerners Jethro, Charlotte, Benjamin, and Mintcy – Lindsay’s original character – were born. Throughout the series, each character will find themselves and discover what they truly stand for in a society stagnated by oppressive values. The inspiration to set the four protagonists’ stories during the Civil War came from their creators’ love for history. Before finalizing the plot, Brooke, Lindsay, and Sarah did a large amount of research
to make sure the world they were creating was not only believable but also accurate. “Lindsay and I went to a local Civil War reenactment one day just to get the experience and we found the issues of that day, the hardships and traditions, as well as the imagery and costuming inspired us to set our comic during that era,” said Brooke. Each author writes the story for their own characters, and each week they collaborate on a new page. Each draws different parts of the page and they then combine them to create the finished comic. “Although we all have many passions and commitments, we continue to make time to work together, writing, sketching, and drawing the pages each week to bring this webcomic to life,” said Sarah. Lindsay added, “We’ve worked so closely that our arts have woven together to tell one great epic.” To learn more about Lost Cause visit www.lostcausewebcomic.com. ¢

ixteen-year-old student star Alyssa Walker is as at home on a soccer field as she is on a stage. This Rancho Peñasquitos resident has found her niche in school, sports, and songwriting. “I’ve been playing guitar since first grade and I started writing songs when I was 10,” Alyssa explained. As a musician, she has played venues across San Diego, including The Company Pub in Poway, Tin Roof in the Gaslamp, and O’Harleys. “I currently have over 20 originals and enjoy

playing covers as well,” she shared. As for her material, “Usually my songs are about problems that others or I face, including love, hate, and teenage angst,” she said. “Some of my songs have deep meanings while others are just light-hearted and fun.” Currently, Alyssa co-hosts the open mic at Bad Ass Coffee on Wednesday nights. The community of Rancho Peñasquitos has provided a strong support system for Alyssa. “I’ve been really lucky to go to some amazing schools and make some lifelong friendships,” she acknowledged. In elementary and middle school, she was active in soccer, softball, and basketball. Since starting at Mt. Carmel High School, Alyssa has played soccer, been a member of the Key Club and SADD, and now as a junior, is in the all-female advanced choir, Bel Canto. “I love choir,” she shared, “and it’s helped me grow both vocally and with performing.” Alyssa’s family is supportive of her musical aspirations. “My parents tell me to follow my dreams and see where it takes me,” she said. “My grandma taught me how to play guitar so she is definitely one of my biggest inspirations.” Musically, Alyssa highlights Taylor Swift, Colbie Caillat, and Andy Grammar as influential artists. She plans to attend college to pursue a degree in music composition. “At this point I want to see how far I can make it as an artist, but if that doesn’t work out I would love to do something with songwriting – either for other artists, commercials, television, or movies.”

Sanity-Saving Tips for Parents
by KIRSTEN STARR, M.D.; Private Internal Medicine Center, Scripps Clinic
Parenting is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world, but it can also be stressful and exhausting. Fortunately, there are ways to stay calm, sane, and stress-free in the midst of normal family chaos. These nine tips should help you recharge: Drink plenty of water. Mild dehydration can affect your body before you realize you are thirsty. Lack of water can cause headaches, fatigue, and lack of energy. Stay away from junk food. When you’re tired and hungry, it’s easy to reach for unhealthy snacks, but don’t neglect your diet. As a general rule, try to eat something every two to four hours, and select low-calorie snacks, such as nuts, fruit, and cut-up veggies. An expanding waistline will only add to your stress and your mood swings.
Get out of the house. Even if you are exhausted, go outside for a rejuvenating walk because fresh air and exercise can help put everything in perspective. Let out your creative self. Create something each day, even if it is just an idea or dream. This will help you stay connected to yourself. Ask for support. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for support, even if that is as simple as calling a friend or checking out a blog. Arrange for a babysitting swap with friends, or ask a trusted family member to watch the little ones while you exercise or get some sleep. Laugh. Laughter is good for you and your family. Laughter reduces your stress by increasing the endorphins to your brain and relaxing your muscles. It should be easy to find humor in the antics of your little ones. Be grateful. Try writing down three things every day for which you are thankful. Having an attitude of gratitude provides perspective and brings you to the present. Take time for yourself. Understand that you most likely won’t finish everything on your “To Do” list – ever. So take time each day to do

something you like and that brings you joy. Some parents wake up before the family to read and enjoy a cup of uninterrupted coffee or tea. You may choose to carve out some time to meditate, take a bath, or simply listen to music. Play with your kids. Have some stress relievers you can do with your children, such as drawing, blowing bubbles, dancing, and playing with pets. Stroking the cat, feeding hay to the bunny, playing catch at the park with the dog, or even watching fish glide in an aquarium can reduce stress and can also teach your children to care for others. Raising a family has its challenges, but learning to relax and giving up the idea of perfection will let you and your children enjoy the ride, bumps and all. ¢

Jocelyn especially adores promoting Rancho Peñasquitos, where she has lived off and on since 1991. As a real estate agent, she admitted, “I love to talk about what’s so special about our community, especially the people and the wonderful schools!” Jocelyn was even named Miss Rancho Peñasquitos back in 1996, and she continues to volunteer for the local pageants. Encouraged by their parish, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, all of the Lomahans regularly volunteer. Both daughters are altar servers. Jay is on the parish’s pastoral council and in the Knights of Columbus. Jocelyn is on the hospitality team, is a lector, and is on the Passion Committee for the American Heart Association’s GO RED for Women campaign. Jocelyn also helps senior citizens through the Guardians of Autumn networking group. In addition, the whole family participates in the Feeding America organization, providing food to those less fortunate. Jocelyn revealed, “We are a very faith-based family. We pray together every morning and say something we are grateful for.” The daughters are grateful for all of their fun activities. Ava, a sixth grader at Mesa Verde Middle School, plays basketball, runs in a running club, does student council, plays violin, and is a Girl Scout. Sofia, a fourth grader at Deer Canyon Elementary School, does ballet and hip-hop. Both girls also take piano lessons. On the weekends, the family soaks up the sights at Torrey Pines Reserve and Miramar Lake. They also enjoy seeing musicals, and are attempting to visit all of the California missions. Though the Lomahans frequently dine out at new restaurants, Jay emphasized, “We still love Filipino food!” Jocelyn maintained, “As Filipinos, we try to enjoy a lot of the grand traditions, and even quirky superstitions, that have been passed down from our families.”

A
dobe Bluffs Elementary School recently hosted its 6th Annual Ability Awareness Celebration, which offered opportunities for students to listen and learn more about the experiences of community members with various disabilities. The event was coordinated by Esther Hilleli, a special education teacher for students in Kindergarten through first grade. The event was part of a week-long awareness program that included school-wide educational posters, lessons, and activities focusing on ability awareness. On the day of the actual celebration, students rotated through different stations in groups to listen to the guest speakers’ experiences. Speakers included Paralympic world champion and gold medal winner David Wagner, Emmy Award nominee and television personality “Big Toe” Mark Goffeney, award-winning speaker and author Devin C. Hughes, Life Rolls On motivational speaker Patrick Ivison, and world blind golf champion and inspirational speaker Jeremy Poincenot. Other guests with various disabilities such as amputated limbs, autism, visual and hearing impairments, and quadriplegia were also present to tell students about the importance of acceptance, and the power of an individual and their abilities. Stemming from this event, Adobe Bluff Hills has launched their respectful language campaign. The campaign will take a stance against bullying, which negatively affects the atmosphere of classrooms and playgrounds. In an effort to make the Adobe Bluffs community inviting

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF There and Bike Again
Inspired by a desire to see the world, 92129 native Didier Jourdain, along with Kyla McClure, began a yearlong bike tour to hit 36 countries and 22,000 miles in Lisbon, Portugal in May of last year. Both Kyla and Didier had recently completed their undergraduate studies and wanted to experience firsthand how people in other parts of the world live. Kyla commented, “What better way to see the world than on a bicycle? Traveling by bike allows you to slow down and speak to people.” The journey served as a way to raise money for two charitable organizations that are close to their hearts: Helping Honduras Kids and One World Youth Project. Didier and Kyla describe their experiences on their blog at www.thereandbikeagain.com, where they are also collecting donations which will go directly to the two organizations. “Every donation that comes in inspires us to push that much further each day. It isn’t always easy traveling but it is usually worth it,” they said.

Sports-related injuries and poor eating habits resulted in a significant amount of dental care as a teenager, and she was inspired by her dentists’ patient, nonjudgmental care. “I personally understand the anxiety, discomfort, and pain patients experience with dentistry because I too was once a patient terrified of going to the dentist,” shared Dr. Marisa. “It is a blessing and a privilege to help each patient obtain a healthy, beautiful smile they love through empathetic and genuine dental care.” Dr. Marisa is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Society, Christian Medical and Dental Association, and San Diego County Dental Society.

RPPW Makes it to Nationals
The Rancho Penasquitos Pop Warner (RPPW) cheer team, the Marauders, recently made it to the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships for the second consecutive year. To qualify, the Marauders performed exceptionally well both locally and regionally throughout the season. The championship competition, which took place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL, hosted only seven qualifying teams. “This was significant to us because we wanted to do something that was not expected of our team: make it to nationals two years in a row,” said RPPW Head Coach Vickie Lofton. “We started this season off with a fairly new team and coaching staff this year. We knew that it would take hard work and dedication of all involved to qualify at the local and regional level.” The team consisted of 16 girls total, with six returning from the previous season and 10 newcomers. MCHS and WHS Rank As Top Schools
Niche, a free online resource for those who need help deciding what communities to live in or what schools to attend, recently released its 2016 list of Best Public High Schools in California. The list ranks the best schools in the state based on test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, teacher quality, student and parent reviews, and more. Local high schools Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) and Westview High School (WHS) each managed to claim a spot on the list, which featured more than 17,000 schools. Coming in as the 21st best school in California, WHS outranked thousands of other schools with its academics, resources, teachers, and safety, which all received an A grade from Niche. MCHS ranked as 79th in the state, with its academics and teacher quality each receiving top-notch scores. To calculate rankings and grade the schools, Niche obtained their statistics from the U.S. Department of Education. For more information on the list visit www.k12.niche.com.
Local Veterans’ Breakfast Group
One year ago, U.S. war veteran Dominic Montemarano wanted to put together a meet-up where any and all U.S. veterans could come together to share stories, make memories, and create new friendships. Dominic put his plan into motion by establishing the Veterans’ Breakfast Group, a weekly gathering in Rancho Peñasquitos that is open to all U.S. vets. Over the past year, the group has accumulated regular visitors, and their hope is to have attendance continue to grow. “The veterans want the friendship,” said Mary Montemarano, Dominic’s wife. “They enjoy exchanging war stories and the friends they make at the breakfasts.” The group’s goal is to have a diverse group of veterans from across generations. While the breakfasts take place in 92129, they are open to all veterans from surrounding communities. The group meets weekly on Fridays at 8 a.m. at the IHOP on Paseo Montril. For more information call 858-484-4202.

Museums throughout San Diego are gearing up for another great February with the return of Macy’s Museum Month. It’s a leap year, so San Diegans will have 29 days to delve into over 40 arts, culture, and science destinations at half-off the regular admission price. Q&A with Membership Engagement Director, Monica Duggan When and why was the Rancho Family YMCA Founded? What is the history behind it? In 1985, the Rancho Family YMCA began as a result of conclusions made from a survey conducted by the YMCA of San Diego County. It became apparent that there was a great need for a YMCA to
workout center known as the Wellness Center, an interactive outside pool, main pool, and a multi-purpose room. What is the Rancho Family YMCA’s mission? The Rancho Family YMCA is dedicated to improving the quality of human life and to helping all people realize their fullest potential as children of God through the development of the spirit, mind, and body. We work towards our mission by serving the community’s needs with quality programming that brings families together. What communities are served by the Rancho Family YMCA? The Rancho Family YMCA serves the communities of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, 4S Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, Sabre Springs, Poway, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Torrey Highland, Rancho Bernardo, Santa Luz, and surrounding areas. What do you most enjoy about working with those communities? Our community is very diverse. I really enjoy learning about the different cultures our YMCA serves.
be built in the North County, along the I-15 corridor, and within the area between Scripps Ranch and Escondido. The Rancho Family YMCA began operating as a storefront location providing backyard swim lessons and day camps to the surrounding community in 1989. In January of 1995, the new Rancho Family YMCA had its grand opening for the building now known as the Program Center. The Rancho Family YMCA opened a main facility in 2000, featuring a full
What are some of the different types of programs offered by the YMCA? We offer a wide range of programs for children as young as six months old through the ages of 65 plus. Our youth programs focus on skill development through character building. We believe our programs are catalysts to teach children our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Some of the programs we offer include gymnastics, swimming lessons, youth sports, group exercise classes, water aerobics, and yoga, to name a few. Through our character-building mission we strive to change lives for the better. How did you personally become involved with the YMCA? When I moved here from England with my family I wanted somewhere that my five-yearold daughter could meet other children in our community. A neighbor suggested the YMCA in Rancho Peñasquitos. My daughter had the

best time, so when we moved to Carlsbad we joined the Ecke YMCA. I quickly realized that I believed in the YMCA mission and I met so many wonderful people there that I knew this was a positive environment to work in and also raise my children in. Now I’m back at the Rancho Family YMCA, but this time helping families such as mine enjoy all we have to offer! What is your current role within the organization, and what duties does it entail? I am currently the Membership Engagement Director for the Rancho Family YMCA. My position entails all aspects of our YMCA experience. My goal is to make all members feel like they can call our Y home, starting from the first time a member walks in the door. I also aim to get people and families connected with each other and to the areas they are interested in through our “onboarding process.” This really helps create a strong sense of belonging and gives members confidence to begin achieving success and reaching goals. I believe in making sure that our members and potential members have the best experience with all areas they are involved with at the Rancho Family YMCA. What is the most rewarding part of your role? To see the members reach their fullest potential. To hear the stories of how the Y has impacted their lives and made a difference. The most challenging? My challenge personally is to connect with every member and make sure they benefit to the fullest from their membership at the Y. Please tell us a little about your team. How do they add to the environment of the facility? Membership is the glue that sticks the branch together. My team is amazing. They care about their interaction with our members and notice if a member stops coming to the Y. They bring new and innovative ideas to help connect with the member and make them family. Can you tell us about the camps offered at the Rancho Family YMCA? Rancho Family YMCA camps are F.A.B.! We believe that children thrive in environments where they can create Friendships, gain a

Summer 2016 are Extreme Art, LEGO: Simple Machines, Around the World Cooking, Y-Olympics, and more! What are some ways that community members can contribute to the YMCA? Our YMCA is for everybody and we welcome community-minded individuals to make a difference at the Y. Ways to make a difference include: volunteering, sharing our message,
and donating to our Annual Campaign. Our Annual Campaign raises funds so we never have to turn any child, family, or individual away due to the inability to pay. What do donations to the YMCA go towards? Donations to the Rancho Family YMCA go towards programs and membership for members of our community. We offer extra camper support at no additional cost for children with disabilities as well as financial assistance for families, children, and individuals to participate in programs and membership. This campaign also keeps programs running that serve our community such as the 267-mile Annual Ride Across California and Playground Partners, a program that aims to eliminate school bullying. How have your programs grown or changed over the years? Our Y is constantly growing and innovating with the needs of the community. As the community changes and issues and challenges become apparent, we work to become part of the solution either with new programs or working with the community in collaborations and partnerships. Our team is always working to connect with members and families to know what direction things are headed and how we can help support and be part of the thriving area we serve. We hope the impact we make will be lasting. What have been the most popular programs this year? Our swimming lessons have always been the most popular program at the Rancho Family YMCA. We pride ourselves on being the nation’s swim instructor, teaching safety & confidence in the water. Our annual 5th grade Ride Across California is another amazing and unique program we run that has over 200 participants each year. Fifth graders learn the importance of hard work and dedication as

they bike across the State of California with their family. Our summer camp program is always a favorite in this community and we pride ourselves on what this program can do for youth when school is out of session. Y Campers are given a sense of belonging when they attend and are welcomed into the YMCA Camp Family. Our Scripps location is the host to our new archery range where families and youth can participate in this growing sport. We are continually looking for new programs to offer to our changing community! Are there any exciting new programs or events coming up soon? Just introduced in January, all San Diego Country YMCAs are all-access. Anyone with a San Diego Y membership will have all-access to visit any one of our 17 YMCA locations in the county. This means members will continue to enjoy all the current benefits of their home branch but can now also take part in new offerings at our 17 locations across San Diego County.

Where are they, and what kinds of programs do they offer? We offer gymnastics and dance classes from ages 12 months and up. Our gymnastics program is held at Canyonside Recreation Center which is located on Black Mountain Rd. Our youth sports and day camps are held at our Scripps Poway Parkway location. This location hosts basketball courts, grass fields for soccer and football, a ga-ga pit, and archery range. Like all of our youth programs, these are a starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. And the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining confidence from landing a first cartwheel or building positive relationships that leads to good sportsmanship and teamwork, our programs are about building the whole child, from the inside out.
If you could grant the Rancho Family YMCA one wish, what would it be? That we continue to receive the support from our volunteers, donors, and members so that we can make an even greater impact and serve more families in our community. If you had to describe the Rancho Family YMCA using only five words, what would they be? Safe, Fun, Nurturing, All-Inclusive, FamilyOrientated. Is there anything you’d like to share about the Rancho Family YMCA? A lot of people aren’t aware that we are more than a gym and swim, we are a cause. The YMCA is a family-oriented nonprofit organization that believes all families count. We have been serving the community for 30 years and look forward to many more! We have some exciting things planned in 2016 for our community. Be on the look out for some new, exciting programs!

he name of her website says it all: AnneMarieKnowsHomes.com. With 16 years of experience in real estate, Anne-Marie McCormick takes her experience, integrity, and education, and puts it to work for every client. Whether buying or selling, Anne-Marie describes her mission: “To exceed our clients’ expectations with superior service, which is driven by our passion and commitment to being our best and helping them achieve their real estate goals.” Specializing in residential real estate across most of San Diego, Anne-Marie works with families and investors alike. Anne-Marie can even make the right connections for buyers looking outside the area. “Through my network, I can connect clients with the best agents in other markets, cities, or states for their relocation and/or commercial needs,” she explained. Over time, Anne-Marie has grown a wide network, as well as an informed perspective on market trends. “There is no teacher like experience, and in the last 16 years I have been through several real estate cycles,” she acknowledged. As for the future, she said, “I’m optimistic. It looks like we are going to see another strong year for real estate in 2016.” With continued professional development and commitment to the latest technology, Anne-Marie stays on top of trends to best meet her clients’ needs. But it’s her focus on customer relationships and service that sets Anne-Marie apart. “The majority of my business is through repeat clients and referrals, which we know we have to earn,” she shared. Reflecting on why she left her finance and marketing position at a Fortune 500 company speaks volumes of Anne-Marie’s ethics. “I was drawn to the aspect of being able to make a direct local impact in the lives of others by helping them realize their goals on a more personal level,” Anne-Marie acknowledged. Her philosophy in real estate reflects words of wisdom beyond buying and selling homes. “My basic philosophy is treating people with respect and honesty; truly listening to their needs,” she explained. And when it comes to home-buying or selling, this is a great advantage for Anne-Marie’s clients. ”I am focused on what the client wants and make every effort to be out in front of everything, to stop surprises, and deliver an experience where they cannot imagine any better.”

We have dental chairs that have heat and massage features and televisions on the ceilings so patients can watch TV and be entertained during procedures,” explained Dr. Hong. The practice also offers sedation dentistry to patients who are especially anxious about specific dental procedures or visiting the dentist in general. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1997, Dr. Hong was in the beginning stages of opening a practice near Wall Street in New York City when marriage and family brought her to San Diego. “I started a practice in downtown San Diego in 2005, but recently decided to sell that practice so that I can serve the community where I live (Rancho Peñasquitos) and the surrounding areas,” stated Dr. Hong. Having an office closer to home also allows Dr. Hong to spend more time with her family and be more actively involved in the local community. Dr. Hong places great value on providing personalized care and is committed to learning the unique situation of each and every patient. “I want to get to know my patients’ stories. EDUCATING CHILDREN, CREATING HOPE Jimmy Thai Helps Educate Children in Vietnam Through the Build a School – Leave a Legacy Program by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
L
ocal resident Jimmy Thai is a tireless volunteer and fundraiser for Build a School – Leave a Legacy, a program that builds schools in rural, remote regions of Vietnam, allowing a safe place for children to learn without the fear of being kidnapped and being put in dangerous situations. Jimmy’s dedication to the program is rooted in a deeply personal experience. Jimmy left Vietnam as a teenager, nine years after the fall of Saigon. He tried to flee 15 times before making it to Thailand. Right before his final escape attempt, he met a boy named Minh. “Mihn was an illiterate eight-year-old boy whose parents harbored me a few days leading up to the journey across the pirate-infested Gulf of Thailand from the Mekong Delta. I never finished teaching him how to read. Every night I was there, Mihn eagerly sounded out words he recognized from crumpled newspapers and asked for my help. Feeling incomplete, I vowed one day to return and build schools for less fortunate children in the rural remote regions of Vietnam,” revealed Jimmy, who is now vice president of technology for SAIC. To date, the Build a School – Leave a Legacy program has built two kindergarten schools. Their third project is to build a bridge in Cape Ca Mau, Vietnam so children can safely walk to school. The team has plans in 2016 to expand the schools to reach into the Central province and Southern delta region. “We seek corporate sponsorships from U.S. and international enterprises that have a strong presence in Vietnam. We also need more Americans to help us educate less fortunate people around the world,” stated Jimmy. According to Jimmy, volunteers are needed to raise awareness and fundraise. Those who are interested can participate in a Hike 2 Build a School fundraiser on Sunday, March 20 at Black Mountain Open Space Park. Visit www.leadershipfoundationacademy.com/schools.html for more information. After all of Jimmy’s hardships early in life, he feels especially fortunate to call 92129 his home. He, his wife Lily, and their two daughters have lived in the community since 2002. “We moved to this area so our daughters could start school in the prestigious Poway Unified School District. Now both of them are Westview Wolverines,” said Jimmy. The Thai family enjoys spending time together and can often be found at the Rancho Family YMCA, the Rancho Peñasquitos library, and Black Mountain Open Space Park.

LIFELONG WELLNESS Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy Offers a Total-Body Approach at Their Studios in Carmel Valley and Scripps Ranch by SHYANNE LOPEZ | photos by Tyler McElhaney
W
hether you are training for a sport, rehabilitating from an injury, or looking for overall health and fitness, Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy offers classes, programs, and seminars that can help clients meet their health and fitness goals faster than ever. Originally established in Scripps Ranch in 2013, the studio’s success has led to the recent opening of a second location in Carmel Valley. The expansion will allow for more community members to benefit from Pukka’s unique programs. Pukka Founder Sharon Manzuk is a licensed physical therapist and Certified Ergonomic Evaluation Specialist who was inspired to open her studio after becoming a PMA Certified Pilates Teacher and personally experiencing the healing benefits of Pilates for her chronic back pain. Sharon, who holds a master’s degree in Physical Therapy, has worked in the healthcare industry for more than 20 years. Together with her staff of PMA Certified Pilates Teachers and licensed physical therapists, Sharon’s method provides a more total-body approach for a client’s health and fitness journey. “As therapists, we utilize our knowledge and highly trained skills to properly diagnose and treat areas of soft tissue and joint dysfunction anywhere in your body,” Sharon explained. “As Pilates practitioners, we focus on the quality of movement and identify areas of decreased muscular control and mobility in need of the Pilates work.”
With this unique structure, Pukka stands out as a studio that provides a high level of expertise. This is because there is less room for injury when practicing Pilates with a licensed physical therapist. “Many clients have orthopedic conditions that require exercise adjustments, and as therapists, we are best suited to make those adjustments,” said Sharon. Pukka also provides an intimate experience with their small semi-private class sizes and one-on-one private sessions. In addition to traditional Pilates fitness classes, Pukka holds specialized classes and seminars such as Healthy Back Pilates, Fitness for Golf, Myofascial Stretching classes, Pilates for Parkinson’s Disease, Ergonomics, and more.
All classes and programs can be modified to accommodate clients with various conditions and injuries. A Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy Teaching Training Program is also offered throughout the year, taught by Sharon herself. The unique combination of services and classes are meeting the needs of a wide group of local residents. From those just starting an exercise program to competitive athletes, Pukka’s experienced therapists and teachers provide clients with individualized attention, the optimal exercise experience, and successful outcomes for a long and healthy life.

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD
CARING FOR
OUR COAST
Local Nonprofits are Working to Keep Our Backyard Beautiful – And So Can You by LAINEY KRAL
D
uring the first few months of 2016, many of us are making commitments to improve our daily lives – whether that means organizing our homes, getting outside more, or prioritizing time with our friends and families. It’s the perfect time to get together and turn that motivation towards cleaning up our coastline as well. San Diego is famously known as America’s Finest City, and we earned that nickname in no small part thanks to our gorgeous beaches. Locals and tourists alike flock to our shores almost year-round. This level of human activity can leave its mark, but luckily we also have a number of organizations dedicated to removing litter and preserving our environment. While we wait for the water to warm up again, take the opportunity to learn about some of the local organizations that are working hard to keep our backyard beautiful – and how you can be part of the progress. ¢
I Love a Clean San Diego
San Diego Coastkeeper
I Love a Clean San Diego hosts both beach and inland cleanups throughout the region. Upcoming events include Tsunami Sweepers on Jan. 23 – a cleanup at Torrey Pines State Beach to help clean up debris still washing ashore from the 2011 Japanese Tsunami – and Cupid’s Cleanup on Feb. 13 – a cleanup meeting behind Benchmark Brewing Company to pick up litter from surrounding streets and the San Diego River.
San Diego Coastkeeper teams up with Surfrider Foundation to host semi-monthly cleanups across the county. Businesses have the option of sponsoring special corporate cleanups, which make a great teambuilding exercise while helping the environment. Coastkeeper also provides Beach Cleanups in a Box – a kit with supplies for up to 25 people to organize their own cleanup. Participants are asked to complete and return Coastkeeper’s data sheets after their cleanup.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
How Top Real Estate Agents Would Choose Their Agent by Troy Merrell
A
simple internet search of real estate agents will supply you with a multitude of information about local agents who are more than willing to receive your business. Yet, many times the information provided is very general or marketed in a way to convince you that the agent can sell or purchase a property with a turn of the hand. However, these internet scenarios convey a common major misunderstanding. A real estate agent’s responsibility is not solely about the sale – it’s primarily about the relationship and the services rendered. The top real estate agents understand this, which is why they approach their occupation not as a salesperson but as a service provider. One calling card of a successful agent is their focus on furnishing you with services that go well beyond sales. In fact, if you were to ask some of the top agents what they would look for in a real estate agent, most likely they’ll tell you the following:
Great Service. Great agents understand that much of what makes them successful has little to do with sales. Whether they are working with a seller or a buyer, they will have a number of services to provide before the end result is a possibility. For instance, agents market properties in multiple ways to get the most offers possible. They also take care of most of the documentation you’ll need for the property transaction. Good Communication. How well a real estate agent communicates has a great influence on his or her ability to effectively deal. The best agents make it a habit to communicate often and clearly with their clients and interested parties. Your real estate agent should update you throughout the process and convey what you can expect. Statistics about how many properties an agent has sold doesn’t tell you the whole story about their service. In some cases, boasts about sales could tell you that the agent is more interested in a quick sale or commission instead of really helping you. If you are looking for more than a salesperson for your next property sale or purchase, make sure to do your homework. ¢
