FROM THE PUBLISHER

VOL. 7, NO. 6 TM

Frequently Asked Questions

I

t has been eight years since we published our first magazine. We have grown from one local publication to a collection of 14 magazines that covers the majority of North San Diego County. Over the years, I’ve noticed that I get asked some repeat questions. So, I thought it would be fun to do an informal F.A.Q.

So, how does it work? Who pays for the magazines to be delivered? This is by far the most common question I get when talking to businesses, friends, readers, government representatives, etc. There is only one answer. Our incredible advertising partners – the businesses and organizations you find throughout these pages – are the exclusive sponsors that should be thanked. We are 100 percent supported by these revenues, and without the participation of these loyal businesses, there would be no magazine. So please take the time to let these businesses know you appreciate their participation and that you saw them in 92129 Magazine.

Are these magazines part of a franchise? No, 92129 Magazine has no affiliation with a national company or franchise. It is a home-grown publication that started with an idea, a lot of napkin scratching, and a desire to publish a local magazine our neighbors would want to read. Although we strive to make every magazine look bigger than life, we are a small, family-owned company that started out of our living room – and we are very proud of that history.

Derrick Breaux Publisher

Who writes the stories, and who designs the magazines?

This is my favorite question to answer, and I think this sets us apart from many other publishing companies. We have a team of about 20 incredibly talented people consisting of editorial, writers, photographers, graphic designers, account executives, and a production coordinator. All are local, and all work feverishly to produce the best magazines possible.

Why do you publish magazines? This answer is very personal. Although I don’t get asked this nearly as often, it is the most important question. We publish 92129 Magazine because we want to bring joy to our communities. I believe this magazine is larger than the paper it is printed on. It creates lasting memories, and memorializes community events and happenings. The pages of 92129 Magazine can be found framed on the walls of people’s homes. People are excited to mail them to grandparents and relatives that live outside of the area.

A ZCode Magazines Publication

Twenty years from now, 30 years from now, or even 40 years from now, perhaps someone will open up a loved one’s cherished box of memories. And maybe – just maybe – there will be an old copy of 92129 Magazine that their relative proudly tucked away. And this will once again put a smile on someone’s face. That’s why I print magazines.

ROCK ON, Reshini! PQ Student Star Reshini Umesh Has a Diverse Mix of Interests and Experiences by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

R

eshini Umesh has such a diversity of interests and experiences, it’s hard to know where to begin. This Westview High School freshman has lived in Rancho Peñasquitos with her family for about five years, and loves the community for the same reasons: “It is such a great place to live because there’s always some kind of sports event going on or a school play.” Coming from an artistic family of dancers, actors, writers, and singers, she’s been involved with dance her entire life. In school, her favorite subject is French, “because my teacher is amazing and I love learning a new language even though I’m not the greatest at it!” She thinks she’d like to major in psychology, possibly be a psychologist or a vet, and she loves to bake. Girl Scouts is another interest of Reshini’s. The trips and the fun to be had with fellow troopers are big reasons she loves Troop 8810. “Also, doing all the community service, earning the badges, and working on the Silver Award project helped me learn a lot about life.” Despite the fact that a recent Girl Scout trip to a horse ranch revealed she was allergic to horses, for her Silver Award project, she decided to collect donations for the local animal shelters. “I absolutely adore animals and it breaks my heart to see the poor babies in shelters with no proper home or even toys!” Her collection included food, toys, and blankets, which she gave to the San Diego Humane Society and Helen Woodward Animal Center. Selena Gomez is Reshini’s inspiration, her idol since the age of 10. “As every kid dreams,” she grinned, “I wanted to be a superstar. Honestly I still want to be famous! I mean, who doesn’t?” A superstar or not, she still takes her cue from the musician’s lifestyle: “With all the charity and love she gives out, I personally think everyone needs to be like her!” Reshini’s had her own challenges to overcome this past year, with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer. “In this difficult time,” she affirmed, “I found a lot of love and support from the school, administration, teachers, and students. I hope one day I will be able to announce that I am cancer-free.” Reshini finished by saying, “On a lighter note, since I still hope someday I will be a rockstar, I love playing the drums!” Rock on, Reshini Umesh, our 92129 Student Star! 

T

he Castelloe family adores their home in PQ, where they have lived high on a hill overlooking the canyon since 2002. They have frequent sightings of native birds – red-tailed hawks, quail, road runners, hummingbirds and finches – and a lovely view of each evening’s setting sun. “We are within walking distance of the library, parks, restaurants (several of which have dog-friendly patios), and good friends,” said mom Erin. “We are conveniently located close to our work, excellent schools, live music and theatrical productions, and community-based sports leagues. We couldn’t ask for more.” The family might sometimes take advantage of the dog-friendly restaurants with their dog Charlie, but they stay home to get in quality time with their 11 other pets! With everything from horses to fish, the animal-loving fun never stops.

Parents: Children: Community: Hometowns: Occupations: Pets: Favorite Local Spots:

Parents Michael and Erin Castelloe met while studying at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Here in PQ, they have three children: Olivia and Jesse, both in sixth grade at Mesa Verde Middle School, and Damian who is in first grade at Canyon View Elementary. Olivia and Jesse play roller hockey for MVMS, ice hockey for the SDIA Oilers, and enjoy drawing, origami, programming on Scratch, and spending time with animals. Damian also plays ice and roller hockey and looks forward to a summer basketball league at the Canyonside Recreation Center. “All three kids are voracious readers,” Erin smiled. They read to the kids every night before bed. “Even though they can read to themselves, there is something special about enjoying a story and winding down together.” Michael is an engineer at Qualcomm, while Erin is a physician who works as an

independent safety consultant for small-to-midsized drug development companies, and she is a sexual health educator. When they are all home together, they enjoy playing outside in the garden, or with neighbors in the cul-de-sac. Their nuclear family and families of origin were all formed through adoption and are rooted firmly in a steadfast love for one another. “Because we are a multi-ethnic family,” Erin shared, “we appreciate, support, and nurture diversity of ideas, cultures, and ethnicities in our community.” A unique story about the Castelloes goes back to animals: their guinea pigs seem to be able to sing. One day as Damian practiced his new harmonica in the foyer, they started making noises the family had never heard before. “As Damian continued to play,” Erin laughed, “we realized the guinea pigs were ‘singing along’!” ¢

FIVE MYTHS ABOUT EXERCISE AND AGING

Get Moving to Keep Your Brain and Body Healthy by PARTHAJEET CHOWDHURI, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo Don’t let common myths about exercise and aging keep you from getting your body moving. As we get older, an active lifestyle becomes even more important. Physical activity increases mobility and balance, improves chronic conditions, increases lean muscle mass, and helps you lose or maintain a healthy weight.

called synapses, in the brain that are essential for brain health and may even increase capillary development in the brain so that more blood supply, nutrients and oxygen reach it. Myth Two: I’m too old to exercise. You’re never too old to be physically active. No matter what your health and physical abilities are, older adults gain significantly by being active. Exercise can help restore strength and flexibility, as well as help prevent falls. It can even improve your mental outlook.

Remember to always get the go-ahead from your primary care physician before starting an exercise program. Your doctor will have some suggestions on a routine that suits your needs and situation.

If you are just starting an exercise program, begin slowly and build up gradually. According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the goal is to do at least 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, of moderate-intense endurance activity each week. Aim for activity at least three days a week and include the four types of exercise: aerobic (endurance), strength, flexibility, and balance exercises.

Myth One: Exercise is only good for the body. In addition to physiological advantages, exercise also benefits your mind, mood and memory. It may even slow shrinkage of the brain as we age. Exercise strengthens the connections,

Myth Three: I’m too weak. We do lose muscle mass as we age, but exercise helps keep muscle tissue healthy. Basic strength training with weights is particularly important to halt the loss of

muscle and keep you stable and strong enough to perform basic functions of living, such as getting out of a chair or carrying the groceries. If you have pain, stiffness, and fatigue, exercise can help you manage your pain and reduce it over time. The key is to start gently. Myth Four: It’s too expensive. You don’t have to join a pricey health club or invest in equipment to exercise. You can avoid expensive options and focus on low-cost activities such as walking, hiking, or swimming. Myth Five: Exercise increases my risk of falling. The opposite is actually true – the more sedentary you are, the greater the likelihood that you will fall. Physical activity prevents bone loss and builds strength and balance, which helps to reduce your risk of falling. The National Council on Aging at www.ncoa.org partners with organizations throughout the United States to offer community-based programs that help reduce fear of falling and increase activity and self-confidence among older adults. Your local community center or YMCA can also be a good resource. 

The PQ-NE Action Group hosted their 11th Annual Neighborhood Picnic at Rolling Hills Park in May. This year, in addition to a barbecue lunch, neighborhood families enjoyed pony rides, volleyball, bounce houses, Mother’s Day crafts, and a water balloon toss. Local San Diego Station 40 joined in on the celebration with tours of their fire truck. Thanks to the generous local sponsors, there were great raffle giveaways and silent auction prizes. The PQ-NE Action Group is committed to promoting and preserving a safe environment for the residents of The Glens and The Villages, located within the community of Rancho Peñasquitos. Fine Art Scholarship Winners

Sarah Henwood

Kaitlyn Kolsky

Two 92129 students received 2017 North County Society of Fine Arts (NCSFA) scholarships. NCSFA awards scholarships each year to deserving North County high school seniors who intend to pursue degrees in the visual art fields. Westview High School’s Sarah Henwood plans to attend either Cal State Long Beach or Savannah College of Art and Design with the ultimate goal of becoming a film or animation illustrator. Mt. Carmel High School’s Kaitlyn Kolsky will continue her education at San Diego State University or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with aspirations in graphic design or marketing. Both girls demonstrated their creative artistic talent to the Scholarship Committee, as well as strong determination and focus in the pursuit of their goals. Learn more at www.ncsfa.org.

All-American Cheerleaders at Westview Westview High School varsity cheerleaders Brighid Johnson (class of 2018) and Brielle Young (class of 2019) were named All-American Cheerleaders at USA Varsity Cheer Camp at CSU San Marcos last year, an honor that less than 10 percent of high school cheerleaders receive. Brighid and Brielle were the first two individuals to ever achieve this accomplishment in Westview cheer history. As part of this honor, the girls traveled to England to perform in the 2017 London New Years Day Parade.

Local Business Gives Back

The Mesa Verde Middle School (MVMS) Quiz Bowl team placed 21st out of 160 teams from across the country at the Quiz Bowl National Championship Tournament in Dallas, TX, in May. The MVMS team, which consists of eighth graders Andrew Jia, James Ni, Daniel Shaw, Michael Wu, Joshua You, and seventh grader Aakarsh Vermani, was the only San Diego team to place and receive trophies as an award. Quiz Bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity in which teams of students work together to answer questions about a variety of subjects. Learn more at www.naqt.com.

Intuit’s Camino del Sur office will host its 5th Annual Week of Service from Aug. 20 to 26, during which employees will give back by volunteering instead of working at the office. Last year, employees volunteered 1,400 hours and were able to raise more than $10,000 for local nonprofits. From walking dogs with the humane society to creating care packages for homeless youth, Intuit employees gave back right in their own backyard. This August, Intuit San Diego will have volunteer projects with dozens of local nonprofits so they can give 2,000 volunteer hours. “Intuit invests in connecting employees with volunteer projects that we are passionate about,” said Engagement Specialist Navi Kalinsky. hile their recently completed state-of-the-art office is new to the community of Carmel Valley, Little Star Pediatric Dentistry is by no means new to treating their young patients with a specialized, focused approach. The practice, which specializes in infants, toddlers, and children, originally had a small office in Solana Beach, exclusively treating patients struggling with lip and tongue restrictions. After transitioning to their new office in 92130, they are now

With a deep understanding that every child is unique, the practice tailors their treatments to the individual needs of their patients. Dr. Hannanvash and her team strive to stand out among other pediatric dental offices, not only by possessing knowledge, experience, and comfort in treating patients with all types of abilities and needs, but also providing guidance to help patients establish healthy habits for life. The skilled team maintain that being knowledgeable is a cornerstone for healthy development. After all, dental decay is entirely preventable with proper knowledge and care. “Our staff prides themselves on communicating our years of knowledge to parents and children,” Dr. Hannanvash explained. In addition to providing patients and parents with lifelong knowledge about how to maintain healthy oral hygiene habits, Little Star Pediatric Dentistry provides a wide range of comprehensive dental care. These include oral wellness examinations, cleanings, digital radiography, nutritional counseling, behavior management, the full spectrum of dental treatment, nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, treatment of lip and tongue ties (frenectomies), and other soft tissue laser treatments. There is no greater match for the Little Star team when it comes to friendly, compassionate care for young patients and their families – except perhaps their own office building, which is equipped with the most up-to-date materials and advanced digital technology. With the help of their state-of-the-art equipment, Little Star personnel are able to implement materials and techniques that are scientifically substantiated while maintaining the highest standards of practice set forth by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Each room even has a television screen – and the patient can choose their own movie to watch! Dr. Hannanvash affirmed, “We want to innovate the dental experience. We want each experience to be a positive and encouraging one, setting the tone for a lifetime of dental comfort and care.” 

ZCode Magazines Continues to Connect North County One Zip Code at a Time

Since ZCode’s conception, the goal has always been to publish feel-good content that truly engages readers across our zip codes. Now, publishing six issues of 14 community magazines per year, ZCode has worked hard to maintain and expand our vision. Behind each issue of 92129 Magazine is our close-knit band of creatives and go-getters who are dedicated to making ZCode’s vision a reality. What do we all have in common? We all are passionate about what makes our communities special. Join us as we dive into the inner workings of our media center.

Q&A HOW DID YOUR VISION FOR ZCODE MAGAZINES BEGIN? I was lucky enough to have a few articles published about me when I played football in high school. It was very exciting. I still have those articles. I wanted to create a local magazine that made people feel good. A magazine that people looked forward to receiving in their mailboxes. A magazine specifically for the neighborhoods that we call home, with colorful photos and a variety of interesting articles. SINCE ITS CONCEPTION IN 2009, IN WHAT WAY HAVE THE MAGAZINES DEVELOPED MOST? Talent! I have been fortunate to work with an incredibly talented group of people that share the ZCode vision. The quality of the

magazines (editorial and design) is unparalleled in the community magazine arena. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF ZCODE’S JOURNEY SO FAR? Having people come up to me and tell me how much they enjoy reading the magazine. It never gets old! WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR THE MAGAZINES? Honestly, it’s to keep publishing magazines that are meaningful to the local residents. And if we are able to grow our family of magazines along the way by adding additional communities, then that’s a bonus!

WHY DO YOU THINK EACH DEPARTMENT IS SO INTEGRAL TO ZCODE’S MISSION?

WHAT’S AN IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY FOR OUR 92129 MAGAZINE READERS?

Without a doubt, the magazines wouldn’t exist without sales, editorial, production, and graphics. While it all started as a oneperson operation, it has grown to something much larger. I feel blessed to be able to work with the talented ZCode team.

The magazine is 100 percent supported by its advertising partners. Please frequent their businesses and let them know that you saw them in 92129 Magazine.

SALES AND PRODUCTION CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY Without this dedicated, hardworking group, it’s highly likely you wouldn’t be reading the magazine you’re holding in your hands. This is because ZCode’s all-star sales team and production personnel create and maintain relationships with the businesses featured throughout our pages, so that we can get our magazines out to our more than 220,000 readers – to you. Our sales representatives aid local businesses – from doctors to landscapers to Realtors – in finding the most

effective way possible to reach potential clients via advertisements, business spotlights, and merchant profiles. And our production coordinator ensures an entirely smooth process. Each team member strives to introduce you to our business supporters and perhaps your next dentist or dance studio, thus doing their part to help create a thriving local marketplace.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS: “The team at ZCode are most enthusiastic and professional. They research who we are, actively listened to our needs, responded quickly with patience for my timeline, and produced the most attractive, informative, and successful advertising for my business! PUSD Volunteer of the Year

WVHS VOLUNTEER AMONG THOSE TO RECEIVE DISTRICT HONORS

C

athy Rogney of Westview High School is among the three recently named 2017 PUSD Volunteers of the Year. Rachel Allums of Twin Peaks Middle School and Jenny Burnett of Pomerado Elementary School are the other two Volunteers of the Year. Cathy and her husband Scott have given thousands of hours of service to the students of Poway Unified. They have volunteered with Westview’s robotics program for many years, attending every weekend meeting and many weekdays during build season. In fact, there would be no robotics program at Westview without her. Cathy takes the time to mentor students and often teaches them skills beyond what the advisors can. She manages the robotics website, serves as a

driver, and guides the business administration for the program. She also initiated start-up robotics programs at several local elementary and middle schools. She and the Westview students visit younger students to build up interest and appreciation for STEM learning. Her colleagues say, “Anything we need, we hear ‘I’ll do it!’ over and over again.” PUSD recognizes outstanding volunteers who represent a high level of commitment to the students and staff at their respective school sites. Each school site in the district selects a volunteer of the year with Cathy, Rachel, and Jenny selected overall by the district. They were chosen from a very distinguished list of volunteers this year. Learn more at www.powayusd.com. 

KATHY LAM IS COMMITTED TO HELPING COMFORT OTHERS THROUGH PET THERAPY by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

A

lmost two decades ago, Kathy Lam was inspired to help those who were suffering. Watching 9/11 unfold on television, Kathy explained, “I was moved by the use of dogs, not only search and rescue dogs, but therapy dogs who visited the morgue, comforting the victims’ families.” One week later, Kathy had to put her own dog to sleep. “I vowed that if I ever got another dog, I would try to train her to be a therapy dog.” Three months later, Kathy rescued Moli, a Pomeranian/Pekingese mix, and the pair have been certified as a therapy team since 2003. “In the beginning with Moli, we visited several senior residences, the PQ Library, and San Diego Hospice,” she shared. Kathy and Moli volunteer through the organization Love on a Leash. The national nonprofit trains and certifies volunteers and their dogs to engage in pet-assisted therapy. “If we can provide some comfort to those we visit – easing their pain or stress or whatever the individual is going through – we know we have done our job,” Kathy acknowledged. Today, she is also serving the San Diego District Attorney’s Office with her second therapy dog, Hoku. “We provide therapy dogs who comfort child victims and witnesses who are going to be testifying,” she explained. Hoku is the D.A.’s third court dog, and they are the D.A.’s first volunteer team. The success stories are numerous, but one that sticks out was Kathy’s experience with the Love on a Leash reading program at the library. There was one young girl who was very shy and would read quietly to Moli. “A few years later, I received an invitation to How the Grinch Stole Christmas at the Old Globe,” Kathy shared. “This special little girl was playing the main character in the production! She dedicated her performance not only to her family, but to Moli as well.” In addition to Love on a Leash, Kathy gives back to the community through a number of organizations. She is a volunteer for Paws’itive Teams, a local group which trains mobility service dogs, therapy dogs, and

emotional support dogs. She is an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she has served a mission and teaches basic genealogy at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library. And last year, she completed the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, the 60-mile walk raising money for the cure for breast cancer, and she is training for it again this year. ¢

PQ COUNCIL CONNECTION

What’s New in

A

s you sit down and enjoy this latest issue of 92129 Magazine, summer is in full swing in Rancho Peñasquitos! People are on the move, enjoying the warm weather and already returning from an early vacation or prepping for a road trip, a visit to a theme park, or perhaps just catching up with friends and family. No matter what your plans are, here are some helpful tips as you leave your house and home behind for one day, one week, or longer: • Consider hiring a house or pet sitter. Save your pets, water your plants, and keep papers, flyers, and packages from sitting on your driveway or by your front door for extended periods of time. • Hold your mail for extended stays away from home. • Let your trusted neighbors know where you will be and ask them to watch the house. • Make your home looked lived in. Timers for indoor lights and having a friend or neighbor move a car from the garage to the driveway everyday are good deterrents. • This sounds obvious but lock up before you leave, and that includes the second story to your home too. • Don’t broadcast your impending vacation to social media, save it for when you get home. • Pull the plug on your electronics, it saves money and may save more in the event of an unforeseen incident. • Turn off the water to your house if possible at the front of the home. • Turn down your wall thermostat and your water heater. • Install and activate a home security system. If you already have one, alert your monitoring company of your departure and arrival dates. For those who are opting for the ever-popular “staycation,” here are some fun ideas to maximize your time in America’s Finest City: • Try geocaching. Visit www.geocaching.com/guide for more info. • Take a virtual museum tour. Here is an example for the Louvre in Paris: www.louvre.fr/en/visites-en-ligne • Try paint balling or laser tag. • Visit a National Park. See www.nps.gov/state/ca for more info. • Host a family board game tournament. • Go bowling. For even more ideas, check out www.livingwellspendingless.com. 

Local Couple Fernando Villacorte and Corinne Britt Share Their Love of Reading by LINDA FRABL | photo by Soul of Photography

L

ocal couple Fernando Villacorte and Corinne Britt are grateful for the many advantages that come with living in the community of Rancho Peñasquitos. Fernando, who grew up in the very same house where they now reside, shared that they love life in PQ because “we are close to amazing beaches and deserts, making this the perfect location for us.” Corinne added, “We love that we are so close to the mountains, canyons, and trails because we enjoy hiking and mountain biking.” Corinne and Fernando have done their part to help foster a sense of community connection by establishing their very own “little free library” in their front yard. Fernando explained, “We wanted to bring the neighborhood together to a place that everyone of all ages can enjoy. It’s a fun gathering spot!” Since opening the little library up for neighbors to enjoy, the duo has loved seeing people stop by day and night to see what’s new in the library, or to drop off books and leave the notes of gratitude and excitement. “The library maintains itself now because people are invested in keeping it stocked and flowing, making the library self-sustaining,” said Corinne. Both Fernando and Corinne have always found joy in reading. They also raised their blended family of five older children to be enthusiastic about books, and they read to their children daily during their formative years. Now sharing that love of reading with the greater community through their little free library, Fernando maintained, “We hope that people know that this library is not just ours, but for all of us.” Corinne concurred, saying, “It is fun to have a passion like reading, and to be able to share that with others.” While Fernando is retired from his job as a sheriff’s deputy for San Diego County, he still keeps busy as a volunteer mountain bike patroller for the San Dieguito River Park Foundation. In his free time he loves skiing, surfing, and ATV and motorcycle riding. Corinne works as a paralegal, and she also teaches knitting classes at after school programs. To unwind, Corinne indulges in yoga. Encouraging others to participate in the “little free library” concept, Corinne remarked, “Please visit any of the little free libraries all over San Diego County and even throughout the world. You can find one near you by visiting www.littlefreelibrary.org.”  Names: Professions: Community: Hobbies: Favorite Spots in 92129:

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H

Who You Work With Matters by JEAN RILEY

I

t is no surprise there is a shortage of homes for sale in 92129. As soon as a home comes on the market, it’s usually gone after the first weekend or sooner...and with multiple offers! We get asked all the time about strategies to get your offer accepted when there are multiple offers on the table. The one thing that holds true time and time again is that who you work with matters, both on the Realtor® and loan officer side. Realtors® who have a good reputation in the marketplace generally have good relationships with other Realtors®, which can be key when everyone’s offer is similar. Also, a good Realtor® will hear about what’s coming to market before it hits, giving you a competitive edge. When both offers are equal, a listing Realtor® will generally opt to work with someone they know does ethical and good business versus someone they don’t know at all. The same goes for the mortgage side of things. Who the loan officer is and who they work for matters a lot. If a loan officer has a good reputation in the area, people know there is a high likelihood that the loan officer did their due

diligence and there is a slim chance the loan could fall through. The same goes for their employer. Listing Realtors® know that some banks and/or credit unions are slow and can’t close on time. It’s important to work with someone who has a reputation for closing on time. Yes, that low rate may look great, but if you don’t have a house to show for it, then it doesn’t do much for you. So make sure to ask your Realtor® for a referral to someone they know who can close on time and has a good reputation. The takeaway is that who you work with truly matters. Do your research and read reviews online to give yourself a competitive advantage! 
