believe that milestones account for a great deal of who we are as a person. Some milestones are good. Some are not so good. One might categorize them as achievements, while others see them more as benchmarks in life. When we aren’t in the midst of experiencing a landmark life event, we are usually working our way towards it. Excitement often builds. Anticipation grows as the event gets closer. What was once so far away is now in sight. It’s very rare when a major life event sneaks up on us – but it does happen from time to time (good or bad). This month marks the culmination of a 17-year-long journey. While our family is not alone – thousands of families send their children off to college each year – it certainly feels special and unique to my small family in our corner of the world. Our beautiful and intelligent daughter is college-bound. The same little girl that we taught to ride a bike. The little girl that we began coaching in soccer at the age of four, eventually developing into a speedster that could outrun nearly every opponent down the sideline when given the opportunity. Homework assignments. Board games at the table. Long philosophical discussions about friends, boyfriends, and life in general – whether she wanted to hear what her mother and I had to say or not. We will miss this. We will miss it all. I think I might be somewhat of a selfish person when it comes to family. I don’t apologize for this. On one hand, we want her to go and begin her journey of adulthood and independence – after all, isn’t that the whole point of being a parent? Isn’t that our job? Yes, I am selfish. We will miss the comfort and joy of seeing her around the house on a daily basis. We will miss having groups of her friends (some going all the way back to early elementary school) hanging out around the house. We will miss knowing that she is safe and sound in her bedroom. We will even miss watching her sit on the couch and speed-text what appears to be dozens of people at once. We might even miss some of the sibling bickering that inevitably takes place between the younger kiddos and her. But we are very proud of her. We are excited for her. A big life event is upon her. We recently helped her move into her new dorm. As always, we will very much be a part our little girl’s new journey that she is starting. Although she will still be close to home, she will still have her independence and get the full college experience by living on campus. This is something that we wanted for her. To our daughter Ashley (a few bits of advice): Go get ‘em. Challenge yourself. Believe in yourself. Learn as much as you can, then learn more. Simply show up – it’s more than half the battle. Always finish what you start. Be your own best friend. Live with integrity. Most importantly, cherish the moment. P.S. We lightheartedly keep telling her that she can’t bring her laundry home on the weekends (they have laundry facilities in the dorms). But truth be told, doing a couple of loads of laundry on the weekends is a very small price to pay for us to ensure that she comes back home to visit regularly.

MULTITALENTED LOCAL FAMILY CALLS TORREY HILLS HOME by AMY LEHRER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

fter meeting in Mexico, James and Christine dated for five years. They parted and pursued separate careers – James in commercial real estate and Christine at a record label – but later rekindled their romance. They’ve now been married fourteen years and chose to live in Torrey Hills for the privacy, open space, proximity to beaches and freeways, the school district, and the neighbors. “We love that our kids can run from house to house on our street and are always greeted with an open door,” shared Christine. The Renners adopted Nikolas from Russia in 2005 and recently returned from a heritage camp where they learned about Russian culture, cuisine, and language. Nikolas wants to be a counselor at this camp in the future. He also enjoys playing Minecraft and participating on his school’s robotics team.

Parents: Children: Community: Parents’ Hometowns: Parents’ Occupations: Pets: Favorite Local Spots:

James Renner and Christene Campbell-Renner Nikolas Vladimir Renner (10, 5th grade Ocean Air School); Luke Campbell Renner ( 7, 2nd grade Ocean Air School) Torrey Hills since 2006 James – San Diego; Christine – Los Angeles Owner – Inland Pacific Commercial Properties Scooby – Shepard Mix from Helen Woodward, Chip – cat, Bella and Fenzo – parakeets and Jay-Z – ball python Davanti Enoteca, Torrey Pines Preserve and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, Jimbo’s, Dog Beach, The Bay Club, The Grand Del Mar and Ocean Air Park

Contributing to their community is important to the Renners. James serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County, and Christine participates on two PTA executive boards and volunteers for REECA Heritage Camp to raise funds so more adoptive families can attend. Nikolas collects baby clothes and diapers for Angels Family Foster Care. The Renner family loves sports. James coaches two adult basketball teams, and his teams have been league champions five times. Nikolas and Luke have played basketball since kindergarten, and their dad has been their coach nearly every season. At home they participate in family bump-out games on their home court. Additionally, both boys have earned their green senior belts in Taekwondo. Music and dance are also an integral part of Renner life. Christine worked in Hollywood at A&M Records, and James and his sister competed in street dance competitions during high school. Both Nikolas and Luke take hip hop dance lessons, and this year Luke plans to compete in jazz and contemporary because he loves pushing himself. Christine even takes adult hip hop classes despite having two left feet. Nikolas plays the drums, and Luke plays the guitar and ukulele. Now they’re both learning to play “Stairway to Heaven.” Christine expressed, “Our iPods are always on in the house and car, and there’s always a dance party about to happen, especially during the holidays when we get the entire Renner clan together!” In fact, the Renners even converted part of their garage to a mini dance studio complete with hardwood floors, black lights, and a disco ball. ¢

International film makers from seven countries were in attendance, as well as a local youth jury that helped award the films. The SDIKFF hosted film delegates from China, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, and the United States during the event.

92130 Resident Cooks Up New Tortillas LOCAL FOOD SCIENTIST INTRODUCES LATEST FOOD INVENTION

N

ot all kitchens in Carmel Valley are the same. For Jim Broussalian, 92130 resident and food scientist, the kitchen is a laboratory, and the right ingredients lead to the perfect invention. Jim has led menu development for companies such as Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, and Baskin Robbins, so he understands the importance of tastiness. Recently, he has developed and commercialized new products for Safeway and Costco. Jim just announced his latest invention, Potapas Gluten Free Tortillas, which are now available in the gluten-free freezer at over 160 Sprouts Farmers Markets across the Western and Southwestern regions of America. Based on the love for all things potatoes, the savory wrap is a great taste alternative to traditional flour, corn, and gluten-free rice flour tortillas. According to Jim, “Since November 2013, we have been in select Sprouts locations. But the tremendous consumer response and passion for Potapas led Sprouts to authorize broader distribution.” The tortillas can also be found at some local independent markets. Potapas are made with garbanzo bean flour, cassava flour and chicory root. They are certified gluten-free and kosher and contain no preservatives. According to Jim the tortillas are sparking a revolution in food innovation as a delicious gluten-free tortilla or taco carrier. The savory potato flavor and soft texture are sure to compliment any meal. For more information about Potapas, food scientist Jim Broussalian, or locations that carry Potapas visit www.potapas.com. There are also recipe suggestions available online that go great with the new product for those interested. 

YOUNG AUTHOR STUDENT STAR SAHANA KUMAR IS A CARMEL VALLEY PUBLISHED AUTHOR by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

S

ahana Kumar loves reading. She reads so much, it may surprise people to know that when she was younger, time outs dispensed by her parents involved taking away her reading privileges. By the time she was 8 or 9, that love was so immense it sparked a desire to make her own stories and share them with others. So what did she do? Not cute little fables twisted together with copper brads, oh no. She wrote a 242page novel and published it at the age of 12! Sahana's novel, Cave of Mystic Dreams, is a fantasy fiction, where three specially powered teens named Jason, Claire, and Zac are sucked into another world called Zairon. The trio is sent into a quest through a series of caves, facing many challenges to acquire a treasure with powerful capabilities. “The book is available in paperback on Amazon, and is an eBook in Kindle and iTunes, and has had excellent reviews on Amazon,” Sahana shared. She continued, “The proceeds of my book go to a nonprofit organization called AID India, a group that helps promote schools for children in rural India.” When she is not being a young author and philanthropist, Sahana also sings and plays the violin. She is a distinguished Honor Roll student at Francis Parker School, and has won placements in the regional Science Olympiad competition and Math Field Day. She likes the library there, and the wide range of elective options that are offered. “I really like the teachers,” Sahana confided, “they do a lot to give us individual Name: School: Grade: Parents: Sibling: Favorite Places in 92130:

attention and help us after school if needed.” Her favorite subjects are math, science, and English. “I really like math and science because they’re interesting and I really enjoy solving problems,” she said. “I like the projects and assignments we are given in English.”

Carmel Valley has been her home for nearly four years, where she continues learning the Indian classical music she started studying at the age of 6 – when she started playing the violin. She is part of the New Youth Orchestra. When asked about her inspirations, Sahana cited authors like Christopher Paolini, J.K. Rowling, and Rick Riordan. She looks up to her parents immensely. “My parents definitely inspire me the most; they are really hardworking, successful and smart,” she stated. ¢

I

f you meet Scott Leary around town, you may not guess the life he leads. He spends every weekend golfing, plays in a competitive ice hockey league, and is a family man with his wife and three children. Professionally, though, Scott is recognized internationally. Through his development of minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques and innovative research, Dr. Scott Leary, a Board Certified Neurosurgeon, leads the way in neurosurgery in San Diego and far beyond. A native of Calgary, Canada, Scott’s journey into medicine began at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. He continued on to his residency at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center and completed his fellowship in Complex Spine Surgery. Today, Scott practices at Scripps La Jolla, Scripps Encinitas, and the Sharp Hospitals. Most recently, he has opened a stateof-the-art medical building in San Diego that includes a one-stop medical shop of physicians’ offices, imaging center, and physical therapy. Further details can be found at www.drscottleary.com. Scott’s most inspirational case is chronicled in his book, Lasting Impact: My Miraculous Recovery from Total Paralysis, co-written with John Miksa. John had suffered a spinal cord injury, rendering him

completely paralyzed from the neck down. While Scott was initially doubtful that anything could help John’s severe injury, he performed the emergency surgery. “To my joy and disbelief, he made a 100% complete recovery and now lives a normal life,” Scott shared. It is cases like John’s that inspired Scott to choose medicine. “It is very rewarding to cure a patient with a brain or spinal tumor and to help someone be pain free when they can barely walk,” he acknowledged. The science also keeps Scott engaged and interested in his work. “Surgeries are very complex and demanding; it’s impossible to get bored in this specialty.” Continuing his research, advancing his profession, and improving his patients’ quality of life top Scott’s priorities. “My main professional goals are to continue to expand the field of neurosurgery and to focus on minimally invasive surgeries that can allow someone to have surgery and recover faster with less risk and side effects,” he stated. As for those looking to follow in his footsteps, Scott recommended, “Make sure if you choose a field in medicine that you are stimulated by what you do. My patients present new challenges that keep me stimulated and engaged every day.” ¢

I discovered a passion for cooking at an early age, and I enjoy watching many of the Food Network shows – especially chefs Bobby Flay and Robert Irvine. I enjoy replicating food that I have tasted elsewhere, and I made an amazing salted caramel milkshake after tasting one at Ghiradelli at the Disneyland Resort in California. I am starting to collect my own kitchen equipment. I own my own KitchenAid food mixer (my mom’s was too small), a pasta machine, and an ice-cream maker. :::: COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Making a Difference USING THE POWER OF VOLUNTEERISM TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF SAN DIEGO’S CHILDREN by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

S

usan Atkins and Mary Reynolds are both long-time 92130 residents. Susan has been living in Carmel Valley for twenty-five years, Mary for twenty-six. Both women cherish their community. “[It’s] a perfect place to raise kids, the beach is close,” said Mary. “The families, the community emphasis, proximity to the beach, and ability to easily get anywhere in the county,” added Susan. In an effort to support their community, Susan and Mary have become leading volunteers for Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary Del Mar Unit, an organization that partners with Rady Children's Hospital to advocate health and well-being of children, increase community awareness, and promote fundraising. “I was taken with the great work of the hospital and the auxiliary,” said Mary. “I quickly embraced their mission and became actively involved,” added Susan. Both women are board members for the group, as well as co-chairs for one of its central fundraising events, Kids News Day – admittedly one of Susan and Mary’s biggest accomplishments. In addition to bringing the event into the classroom as a teaching tool, increasing paper sales and creating an essay contest for the event, Susan and Mary also helped to initiate the Kids Helping Kids program. Today, the ladies are certainly San Diegans at heart, although neither of them are natives. “I grew up in the Los Angeles area and moved to San Diego to attend college,” said Mary. “I have been married for thirty-five years to a wonderful man, and have two adult children ages 25 and 27.” Mary had previously worked as a realtor, but retired in 2009 after a boating accident left her with a broken back. Now, she mainly concentrates on her many volunteer endeavors and taking care of her elderly father. Susan, who grew up in nearby Newport Beach, moved to San Diego in 1984. “[I] have been involved in several community service/philanthropy organizations over the past thirty years,” she shared. “My husband Jim is a deputy district attorney of thirty years. I have two children, Rachel (21) and Mark (20).” In addition to her volunteer work, Susan has a day job as a mortgage banking consultant. Even with all that’s on their plates, these do-gooders manage to keep volunteering a top priority. And when asked about one wish they have for the organization, they replied: “That Rady Children’s Hospital continues to provide unparalleled medical treatment and education and that it remain on the cutting edge of technical and medical advances in the treatment of children through on-going research, community outreach, and attracting outstanding medical professionals.” ¢

Q&A with Salome Martinez,

Carmel Valley Service Unit Manager WHEN DID THE CARMEL VALLEY COMMUNITY PARK OPENED? The park, recreation center, and pool opened to the public on Oct. 15, 1999. WHAT TYPE OF FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE RECREATION CENTER, PARK, AND POOL? The Carmel Valley Recreation Center and Community Park consists of a recreation center, pool facility, tennis courts, children’s play areas, an outdoor amphitheater, outdoor basketball courts, multipurpose athletic fields, horseshoe pits, a fitness apparatus, and picnic areas with barbeques. The recreation center consists of two multipurpose rooms that can be used as a game room and an arts and crafts room, as well as general meeting rooms. There is also a gymnasium that serves as a facility for basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickleball, and gymnastics.

The community pool facility consists of three pools. The primary pool has lap lanes and is deep enough for water polo with a separate zero-depth (beach) entry into a recreation area that falls from zero feet to a depth of three feet. Adjacent to the primary pool is a zero-depth entry children’s pool with a water play structure. There is also a water park-type slide complex with two slides entering into a third pool. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE UNIQUE ASPECTS OR PROGRAMS AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITY RESIDENTS? The Carmel Valley Recreation Center and Community Park is uniquely settled on three levels of land at the corner of El Camino Real and Townsgate Dr. This provides great fitness and recreation opportunities for the public with four large sets of stairs and a public fitness station on the top level. Additionally, our amphitheater offers a great venue for entertainment and programs. Another great aspect of this park is the water slides at the Carmel Valley pool. They are similar to slides you would find at a water

park. These two slides deliver endless summer fun for kids and adults. DO YOU OFFER ANY SPECIFIC PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN, TEENS, OR ADULTS? This fall we will be offering a variety of different programs for the youth and adults in the community. For children and youth we offer preschool programs, cooking classes, gymnastic classes, acting classes, martial arts, child and babysitting safety class, art classes, book clubs, dance classes, sports classes, and leagues. For adults we offer a variety of fitness programs, CPR and First Aid training, Medicare seminars, and social and competitive sports leagues. The recreation center also provides free open-play gym time for the public to come enjoy a game of basketball, pickleball, or badminton. The pool also offers swimming programs like water polo, swim team, and multi-level swimming lessons for children and youths. In addition, they have water fitness and lap swimming for adults.

and/or facilities. Fees only apply when an individual wants to register for a scheduled activity. Fees are also associated with permit rentals to reserve space in the park for birthday parties, company picnics, other special events, sports games, etc.

AT-A-GLANCE | SALOME MARTINEZ Organization: Favorite Activity at the Carmel Valley Community Park: WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES? I am the center director at the Carmel Valley Recreation Center and Community Parks and my primary job duty is to organize, plan, and implement all events and activities that are held here at the center and issue permits for most Carmel Valley neighborhood parks. Some of these parks include Ashley Falls, Carmel Creek, Carmel Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Solana Highlands, Carmel Grove, Carmel Knolls, Del Mar Trails, Carmel Mission (Renaissance Park), Torrey Highlands, and Windwood.

City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department Summer Serenades Concerts and Movie in the Parks, or all special events.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE CARMEL VALLEY RECREATION COUNCIL’S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CENTER AND PARK? The Carmel Valley Recreation Council serves as an advisory board to the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department. This group of concerned citizens volunteers their time to advise park and recreation staff on matters related to park and recreation programs, community events, and equipment. They plan, promote, publicize, and help provide recreation opportunities for citizens within the boundaries of the Carmel Valley Recreation

Council. Groups, clubs, leagues, and individuals using the parks are encouraged to attend the meetings. Meetings are open to the public. The Carmel Valley Recreation Council meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Carmel Valley Recreation Center. The public is welcome to attend. ARE THERE FEES TO USE THE CENTER OR THE PARK? We are a City of San Diego public facility that welcomes all residents and non-residents to come out and enjoy the park. There is no membership fee to use the park

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE OF BOTH THE CENTER AND THE PARK? ANY NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE WORKS? Some long term projects the Carmel Valley Recreation Council is working on are installing synthetic turf on the lighted fields and constructing a multipurpose sports arena on the lower field. We are continuously evaluating the needs of the community and adding new programs to meet those needs. The Carmel Valley Pool is working on repairing and restoring many of the pool structures and surrounding facility. HOW WAS/IS THE CARMEL VALLEY PARK FUNDED? Facilities Benefit Assessment (FBA) funds were used for the development of this park. Operations are funded through the

:::: COVER FEATURE City of San Diego’s general fund. The Recreation Council also funds many of the field improvements, special events, and other park projects. WHAT TYPES OF GREEN EFFORTS HAVE BEEN MADE AT THE PARK IN TERMS OF RECYCLING PROJECTS, WATER CONSERVATION, ETC.? The park follows all water conservation and recycling policies that the City of San Diego implements. We are currently under mandatory water restrictions which limit our watering schedules for turf and shrubs to three days a week. We also provide recycling bins inside the recreation center and at all of our special events. WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE PART OF WORKING AT THE CARMEL VALLEY COMMUNITY PARK? Working with the wonderful people in the community and hosting great special events. HOW DOES THE PARK STAY CONNECTED WITH THE CARMEL VALLEY COMMUNITY? The center connects with the local school districts and library to get the word out about the many programs that we offer for the people in the community. By providing quality parks and programs, the people of the community are drawn to the center either through word of mouth or simply by walking into the center and seeing what we have to offer. On top of the great programs, the Carmel Valley Recreation Council also offers free events thoughout the year for the public to enjoy including a spring egg hunt, five summer serenade

concerts, and two ‘Movies in the Park’ events. The Carmel Valley Recreation Council also works closely with the community sports groups in advertising activities and events at the center. Programs and events are advertised on the City of San Diego’s website at www.sandiego.gov as well as the community website at www.cvsd.com. DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS OR NEW PROGRAMS IN OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE OUR READERS TO BE AWARE OF? Winter class registration will begin on Nov. 22 and classes will run from December 2014 through March 2015. WHERE CAN READERS GO TO SIGN UP FOR CLASSES AND PROGRAMS AT THE CARMEL VALLEY COMMUNITY PARK? Brochures are available online or in the office lobby. THE COOKING GUY SAM ZIEN FINDS FAME WITH HIS UNPRETENTIOUS AND ACCESSIBLE COOKING by LINDA FRABL | photo by Lynn Chyi

F

ame and fortune are usually reserved for those cherished few individuals who are supremely talented, educated, and even a bit out of reach from us mere mortals. The average Joes of the world need not apply… with one exception. Meet Sam Zien, otherwise known as Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien on Discovery Health Channel’s Just Cook This television show, and on his own Sam Livecast internet series. A Canadian native who has lived in Carmel Valley with his wife for twenty years now, Sam proudly touts himself as a regular guy who can make cooking less intimidating, and that has won him accolades. Sam recalled, “After watching this complicated cooking segment on a local TV channel, I thought, ‘What if somebody made it a little bit more accessible?’ Nothing fancy or over the top; just stuff to encourage people not to go out to fast food and to do it themselves and not buy frozen food. And that’s what I did.” Of course at the time Sam didn’t cook. But that wasn’t a hurdle, for Sam reasoned, “I decided I was going to do easy enough stuff. If I can do it, then the people watching can do it, and it would be very instructional, fun, helpful and encouraging.” Now it is twelve years later, and Sam has still never taken a cooking course. Thankfully, his uneducated status works to his advantage. He explained, “I’m self-taught, and I’m not inclined to say things in culinary terminology. I make great food that is simple enough that anybody could do it, and it

46 • 92130Magazine.com • October | November 2014

still tastes great.” Some of Sam's favorite dishes include bucatini with asparagus, prosciutto and poached egg, chili salmon, and gochujang and bacon fried rice. That unpretentious approach to cooking has already garnered fourteen Emmys for Sam! In addition, he has received the Golden Bell award for his work with the Salvation Army, and he also achieved the Outstanding Celebrity Philanthropist award. Two major philanthropic interests for Sam are Mama’s Kitchen, a charity in which thrice-daily meals are provided to those with AIDS, and Noah Homes, in which beautiful single-level “home-like” housing units are made available for those with severe developmental disabilities. Sam shared, “The cooking guy thing was solely about me. Once it turned around at some point, I realized that I could use my name and celebrity status for better things than just me.” He gratefully added, “I feel very fortunate that I found something that I like to wake up and do every day.” ¢

OUR

TOWN Dive Into San Diego's History at Old Town by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Sandé Lollis

O

ld Town, San Diego harks back to the roots of San Diego’s early days as a settlement. There’s loads of history and lots to see packed into a few blocks between the I-8 and I-5 freeway, including the historic parks and infamous Whaley House. For a more mobile experience, the Old Town Trolley Tours offer sightseeing of Old Town and beyond from the comfort of an old-school trolley. The Old Town Historic Park appears to be straight off a Hollywood movie set. You can just picture the cowboys atop their horses and ladies with hoop skirts parading down the main way. Visit a traditional adobe house, La Casa de Estudillo, the First Brick Courthouse, the Seeley Stables where horses and carriages were once stored, and many restored homes of historic San Diego families. A short distance away is Presidio Park, with the Junipero Serra Museum and Bazaar Del Mundo specialty shops. Above Old Town is a plot of land known as Heritage Park. Take a step back in time in these restored Victorian homes where you can get a glimpse of what life was like in these regal estates. But when it comes to a particular house in Old Town, be careful of what you find! The Whaley House – it’s a place that you dare your friends to step into. Are those footsteps you’re hearing? Did you feel a chill? Known as one of the most haunted spots in America, the Whaley House is open for daytime and nighttime tours, and perhaps you’ll get a ghostly visitor or two. If you aren’t brave enough to step inside, you can walk around the outside and tour the gift shop.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2014 produced by SOHO (Save Our Heritage Organization) This Nov. 1 and 2, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2014 comes back to Old Town. The annual celebration honors those who have passed and attributes to San Diego's Mexican heritage with color, music and more. This is not to be confused with Halloween and is not meant to be scary or morbid. Rather, families and friends come together to offer the spirits hospitality. Over fifty public altars will be

peppered throughout Old Town, hosted by local businesses, museums and shops, with many of them depicting historical and recently passed figures important to them. Visitors are encouraged to tour the altars to learn more about these figures and pay respects. A Tour of Altars Map will be available at www.sddayofthedead.org. Other family activities will include live entertainment, skull face painting, paper flowers, masks and more. 

Important Advice for the

‘Sandwich Generation’ If by Richard H. Fogg, CFP®

you’re between the ages of 35 and 55, you may be feeling a financial pinch from both your growing – or grown – children and your aging parents or in-laws. You may also find yourself under pressure as you try to juggle your work commitments and the expectations from family members for your time and support. As a member of what’s known as the ‘sandwich generation,’ you’re not alone. Unlike previous generations where children left their homes earlier and more permanently, today kids tend to live at home longer – or move out and return over time, sometimes with their children in tow. And parents tend to live longer, often spending twenty-five years or more in retirement. If you’re wondering how to keep yourself financially on track in the face of these competing demands, the following strategies may help:

PAY YOURSELF FIRST

DISCUSS LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE

Instead of paying your bills and other expenses and then saving what’s leftover, automatically route a portion of your paycheck to your 401(k), Roth IRA or other retirement savings account — and encourage your working children to do the same. This ensures you’re regularly investing in your future financial security. And because of the power of compound interest, the sooner your children start this habit, the better their chances are of accruing wealth.

One of the greatest challenges when it comes to planning for retirement is trying to predict future healthcare expenses. In-home health care costs or a lengthy nursing home stay can wreck havoc on a family’s finances. If your parents don’t already have long-term care insurance, they might want to look into it.

TALK OPENLY ABOUT FINANCES Discuss the basic tenets of sound money management with your children to help them develop good saving and spending habits at an early age. This includes helping them understand the role cash reserves, insurance protection, fixed investments, and equity investments play in their overall financial strategy. On the flip side, it’s equally important to talk with your parents about their plan for meeting their financial obligations in the years ahead. This includes knowing what, if any, plans they have if they become ill or incapacitated.

MAKE SURE FINANCIAL AND LEGAL DOCUMENTS ARE UP-TO-DATE Whether it’s you, your parents, or your children, it’s important to determine whether you’ll need a Durable Power of Attorney, a Healthcare Proxy, a Living Will, and a Last Will and Testament. It’s also key to review and update beneficiary designations on investments and insurance policies because they may trump what’s stated in a will. In addition, it’s wise to keep a list of your financial accounts and passwords — and know where your parents and children keep theirs — in case one of you needs to step in for another. And don’t forget to keep these documents in a safe place.

EXPLORE RESOURCES TO HELP OFFSET COSTS If your children are attending college, research the scholarship opportunities or work-study programs that may be available to them. Also, find out whether your parents qualify for any federal, state or local benefits. This knowledge can help all of you make better and more informed decisions about budgeting, school choices, loan options, long-term care options, and other financial choices that need to be made.

SET LIMITS Although your career may be reaching its peak and you may be making more money than ever, it doesn’t mean those dollars are up for grabs. Be clear with your children and parents about how much financial support, if any, you are realistically able to provide. If you choose to give them money, be clear whether it’s a loan that needs to be repaid or a gift that does not. When loaning money, document the conditions of the loan in writing and have both parties sign and date the agreement so that there are no misunderstandings. 

:::: HOME TIPS

Energy Saving Tips

for the Season by TORI MORRISON

W

ith the kids back in school and the holidays right around the corner, it’s important to monitor your spending during these busy months. If you haven’t started, now’s the time to cut back on energy use within the home. Here are some easy tips to get you started.

Unplug, Unplug, Unplug Make sure you unplug devices when they are not being used. Be especially mindful of computers and laptops. According to the Residential Energy Services Network (RESN), even when these devices are turned off, they will still consume power when they are plugged in and can account for five to ten percent of your total household electricity bill.

Cover Your Windows Blinds, drapes, and window coverings can help reduce energy waste and keep your energy bill low. As the temperatures in October and November remain in the high seventies, close your blinds, curtains, and window coverings to keep the house cooler. According to RESN, your air conditioning will have to work up to thirty percent harder to cool your home otherwise.

Use the Right Bulb Replace standard bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL). The bulbs give off the same amount of light, but are much more energy-efficient. Ensure that you are using the right size bulb for your light fixture.

Adjust Temperature Settings Maintaining a higher indoor temperature setting during summer and a lower indoor temperature setting during winter saves energy. Keep the temperature comfortable by making adjustments to your thermostat before you get home.

Schedule a Home Energy Audit Reach out to a certified home energy auditor for a home energy audit. A home energy audit is an in-depth home examination done by an expert to find out where energy is being lost. The expert then assists the homeowner and offers possible solutions. 

CCA Raven Pride THE CCA RAVENS ANNOUNCE IMPROVEMENTS AND PLANS FOR THE COMING SEASON

C

anyon Crest Academy’s (CCA) baseball team has made it a point to show that they will continue to improve the quality of play and student life at the school. The future looks bright for the CCA Ravens as 2014 marked one of the team’s most successful seasons yet. With a new coach guiding them, plans for their first annual fundraiser set, and a new baseball field to reach completion in 2015, the team has set the foundation for another great year. The new head coach Mike Hymes has created a strong sense of family within the program, put together a cohesive coaching staff, and instilled the importance of both baseball and life skills to his players. “I don’t want players to look back on their time as Ravens and describe

it as something they did while they were in high school. I hope they remember is more as an experience with lessons that they can use for the rest of their lives,” he stated. The team will host their first annual CCA Baseball Golf Tournament on Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Bernardo Heights Country Club in order to raise money for the new baseball facility. This facility is scheduled to be complete by February 2015 and promises to be an impressive venue. The Ravens are currently preparing for their season, which begins the first week of March 2015. To come support the team visit their website at www.leaguelineup.com/ccaravens. Refer to the website to sign up for the CCA Baseball Golf Tournament as well. 

S

an Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore rocks them. The team from Dick’s Last Resort pairs them with flashy costumes, and many local TV personalities have been seen teetering downtown in the Gaslamp District of San Diego in a pair. That’s right, these men have all participated in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, a one-mile walk in women’s shoes that raises money to benefit the YWCA’s Becky House Domestic Violence Program. YWCA of San Diego County empowers women, children and families to break the cycle of domestic violence. The event seeks to raise awareness about the critical issue of domestic violence and encourages the public to stay involved in seeking a solution. This year’s walk will be held on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. in downtown San Diego at 4th and K Streets with registration and activities beginning at 5 p.m. The celebration will continue after at the offical Jolt‘n Joe’s After Party. Nearly 500 participants united together for the walk last year, netting over $86,000 for the program. Carmel Valley resident and CEO of the YWCA of San Diego County Heather Finlay elaborated, “Hundreds of walkers support this community-wide effort to raise awareness of domestic violence each year. Proceeds from the event help stop the cycle of abuse and allow women and families to rebuild their lives through the YWCA and our Becky’s House domestic violence program.” Become a champion for change and register online for the event at www.ywcasandiego.org. UC San Diego Announces New Trustees SEVEN TRUSTEES JOIN THE UC SAN DIEGO FOUNDATION BOARD

The

UC San Diego Foundation trustees play a vital role in forming community partnerships and generating resources to support UC San Diego’s research, teaching, and public service initiatives. Seven trustees, including 92130 resident Leo Spiegel, recently joined the 2014-2015 Foundation board this year. Comprised of regional business executives, philanthropists, law professors, and alumni, the Foundation is proud to welcome this year’s new trustees. Leo Spiegel, former UC San Diego alum, returns to the board again this year. Over the last six years he has served on the investment and development committees. He was the chair of the development committee for two years and looks forward to leading the committee after a one year sabbatical. “During my tenure on the board I have contributed in a variety of ways including hosting events at our home, participating in many university events, advocating for the university, and helping to solicit potential donors,” stated Leo. His goals this year consist of providing leadership to the overall strategy and positioning of the school as well as activities related to philanthropic support. Leo is currently a managing partner at Mission Ventures, a Southern California venture capital firm that invests in early stage IT companies. He is also senior vice president of strategy and corporate development at Pivotal. In addition to serving on the UC San Diego Foundation board, Leo is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, and serves as a board member for the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego. 

Golf Champions TPHS GIRLS GOLF TEAM PREPARES FOR ANOTHER SEASON AS UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS

T

orrey Pines High School (TPHS) Girls Golf team has been undefeated since 2010. According to Coach Chris Drake, their current winning streak is at 104 matches. Since 2008, the team record stands at 154-3. In the last two years alone TPHS has sent six girls to play golf at the highest collegiate level. According to Coach Drake this type of success has been cultivated over time. “The team owes its success to plain old-fashioned hard work. The girls work really hard to be the best student-athletes they can be,” he stated. The girls exercise independent practice. They play golf on their own time with their parents and swing coaches and receive advice, assistance, and more from Coach Drake. “My job is to put the team and individual players in the position to be successful. My focus has always been to instill the idea of a ‘team’ into an inherently individual sport. This idea is reinforced constantly and is a major theme of our seasons,” he elaborated. As for this year, the team is hard at work again. Coach Drake hopes to continue to the winning steak this year and watch the girls set their own individual goals for improvement. He’s proud to report that the team just returned from the 2014 Antigua National High School Golf Invitational in Scottsdale, AZ where the girls played against some of the best teams in the country and took first place as a team. Two sophomore students, Muni He and Carolyn Zhao, placed first and second as individual golfers. 

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

What Happened to the Real Estate Market?

T

he year 2014 started with a bang! Homes were going on and off the market in a mere few days – then silence. What can we attribute to this reticence on behalf of buyers? It’s certainly not interest rates as money is still cheap. Are homes overpriced? Quite possibly. However, if buyers do not make offers we cannot judge that. Then it must be demand. No. There’s a glut of housing inventory, which should spark buying. We believe fewer people can or want to fulfill the American dream of starting a household of their own. However, if you compare leasing a home to purchasing one, the advantages are clearly with purchasing. Landlords have seen their inventory become more and more popular and have gradually increased the monthly rents. An average home in Route 56 corridor rents for $1.50 to $1.75 per square foot. A 2,000 square foot home will lease for $3,000 to $3,500 per month. That’s a mortgage payment! The first thing any prospective buyer should do is speak with a lending institution to see what they are qualified to purchase. Once that has been determined, buyers should search for those homes with the criteria they desire. It’s amazing what they’ll find and how quickly they’ll be in the market for their new home.

“Two years ago, your coworker bought a house in your same neighborhood at a steal price. This year, you decided to jump into the house-hunting game and discovered that a similar house would cost 20% more. Yikes! With property values rising so quickly in many parts of the nation, are we on the cusp of another housing bubble? In one word: no. In fact, we are far, far away from bubble territory.” (Excerpt from Forbes Magazine; Paula Pant, May 16, 2014). Now is the time to buy. Inventory is high. Sellers may be carrying two mortgages, so now is the time to build wealth. Next year may experience a whole different scenario. Get in the game, call your realtor, and buy! We’re here to help you find that perfect dream home. Call us at 858-243-0873 or check out our website at www.buyingsandiegorealestate.com. 
