Camps. Camps. And More Camps!

I

Derrick Breaux Publisher

can’t believe we are thinking about summer already! Where does the time go? I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a little overwhelming. Two or more months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, last year we brought you the 1st Annual Summer Camp Guide. We had no idea of how popular it was going to be. This year, I am proud to present the 2nd Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 42). It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in the magazine! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Camp Stories From The ZCode Team “I was lucky enough to attend a four-day football camp when I was a kid. We stayed in dormitories, ran cool training drills, watched football tapes, and made some great friends along the way. It was an awesome experience!” – Derrick, Publisher

“Leaving the classroom for the dance studio was always one of my favorite things about summer. I remember attending ballet and tap dance camps, and loving every minute! Summer camp activities are a great way to energize yourself and get active.” – Randi, Associate Editor

“One of my best camp memories was with the YMCA. It was held in Balboa Park. I have memories of shooting bow and arrows and learning lots about different cultures. I saw how they made teepees and learned traditional dances. It was a lot of fun.” – Jessica, Director of Business Development

“I attended an art camp in middle school that allowed me to be creative with styles and tools I had never used before. By taking me outside my comfort zone, I learned to be more open to new ways of doing things. To this day I love the challenge of using a new art medium” – Shyanne, Associate Editor

or Marcelo and Salina Bastos, traveling the world and experiencing new cultures is not only a pastime but a passion. “There’s nothing we love more than traveling together. Our favorite trip was to South Africa. We have some amazing South African friends who took us on a safari – a lifelong dream of mine!" said Salina. "Seeing animals in their natural habitat was like nothing else we’ve ever experienced. We also traveled to Cape Town and enjoyed hiking Lions Head and seeing the penguins on Boulders Beach."

Marcelo, who is a professional skateboarder, travels to destinations across the globe on a regular basis. Salina, who works at a financial firm and helps to run a local fitness business, accompanies Marcelo as often as possible. The married couple has traveled to places such as Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Brazil for skateboarding contests, and are looking forward to future adventures together. Salina and Marcelo met in November 2009 and were married just five months later. According to Salina, they knew it was meant to be after an eventful all-day whale watching excursion. “We figured that if we still loved each other after that long day on the boat, nothing could stop us,” Salina joked. Now, she and Marcelo are thrilled to be celebrating their sixth year of marriage. When they are at home in Torrey Hills, Salina and Marcelo enjoy taking advantage of all the area has to offer. “We love Torrey Hills because it’s a wonderful neighborhood with beautiful sunsets and ocean views. It is also centrally located and has great running trails,” related Salina, who fell in love with running while she and Marcelo lived in South America. “I trained for my first half marathon while living in Buenos Aires. It was a wonderful way to explore a new place,” revealed Salina. She and Marcelo also enjoy spending quiet time at home, cooking and playing cards. “Canasta is our game of choice, and we often swap photos of winning hands with my grandparents in Texas who play gin every night,” said Salina. During the fall, the fun-loving couple can often be found watching football. Marcelo, who moved to California from Brazil when he was 18 years old to pursue his skateboarding career, has embraced American football, and now shares Salina’s love for cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. 

INDIVIDUALISTIC Student Star Jacqueline Fisher Encourages Peers to Express Themselves by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

L

ike many other teenagers, Jacqueline Fisher went through a period in her life where she felt uncertain about who she was. But unlike some, she decided to speak up and do something about it. Two years ago, Jacqueline – currently a junior at Torrey Pines High School – created her own website: www.beindividualistic.com. Creating the site was Jacqueline’s way of finding a safe place to express herself creatively. In her words, she had finally “started her life.” In doing so, she realized that many of her peers were also looking for an outlet to express themselves. So, Jacqueline founded the Be Individualistic Club at Torrey Pines High School. “I realized that especially as teenagers, we are generally more explorative in our thoughts,” said Jacqueline. “Having an outlet for others to express themselves with those garnered thoughts is incredible. All the club members offer such innate insight and it is just so cool listening to other people exercise their unique voices.” With the purpose of providing an accepting environment, the Be Individualistic Club allows for open submissions through email so that any student can participate (beindividualistic@gmail.com). “The Be Individualistic Club currently has 22 members. Some members attend Torrey Pines High School, some Canyon Crest Academy, and some are in college,” noted Jacqueline.

Both the club and website promote the concept of individualism while also serving as a source of encouragement “for those finding their place in the world,” said Jacqueline. “I am proud of the message the website and the club promote.” Members of the club can submit film, photography, art, and poetry to be published. Many members – including Jacqueline – write pieces on topics they find relevant or interesting. One issue very personal to Jacqueline is anti-bullying; thus, she has published many pieces on the topic. “Everyone has a story,” stated Jacqueline. “We are all storytellers. It’s just a matter of whether or not we choose to share our stories with others.” Jacqueline – who is an aspiring screenwriter and hopes to write and direct her own films one day – has found that sharing her own story has been life-changing. “Most people in some way want to feel accepted or a part of something bigger than themselves,” commented Jacqueline. “The sense of acceptance I have is very much from myself, whereas sometimes people want acceptance based on how other people perceive them. I do not want to rely on other people for my own sense of fulfillment. It instead should come from within oneself.” 

“I am proud of the message the website and the club promote.”

The school’s state team consists of 15 seventh and eighth graders who originally participated in three different regional teams, each named after famous Greek thinkers – Plato, Thales, and Aristotle. Science Olympiad events are a mix of lab, study, and build events representing all areas of science – life sciences, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, technology, and general problem solving. To prepare for competitions, students meet weekly and put in a total of six to 10 hours a week of preparation during fall months. Classes are run by volunteers, and CVMS is always looking for individuals to help as a coach or mentor. “Watching students pick up a hammer for the first time and build

a device or finally grasp a science concept is rewarding,” said Head Coach Scott Wooden. “Students also learn other life lessons such as how to take tests and exams, prioritizing, and above all, being gracious losers and humble winners.” The program also serves to broaden the range of students interested in STEM subjects, with 10 of the 15 students that made the state team being girls. The students will continue their training as usual for the state competition, which will take place at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. “It has been 20 years since a team from San Diego advanced to nationals. We look forward to doing just that,” said Scott. “We have a very competitive team this year.” To learn more or donate to the team visit www.cvmsptsa.com. 

How to Calm a Crying Baby by JENNY ILFELD DAVIS, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

You’ve fed, changed, and played with your baby, but the crying hasn’t stopped. Time to take a deep breath and try these tips to help calm your little one.

Fresh air. Getting outside can also help soothe your baby, even if it is just stepping out onto the porch or patio, or walking into the backyard. A breath of fresh air and a glimpse of blue sky can also calm your frazzled nerves.

Swaddling. Recreate the feeling for your baby of being safe and secure in utero by swaddling. Swaddling – wrapping your baby up in a soft blanket – is a timetested way to recreate that cozy feeling. Swaddle your baby snugly enough so that the arms stay down and won’t flail out, but make sure there is enough room for little legs to move.

Motion. Movement, especially a swinging motion, can activate a calming reflex. Try wearing your baby and walking around so that your little one can enjoy the feeling of closeness and the rhythm of your walk. For the first three months, make sure your baby is facing your body in a front-pack carrier or sling for extra head support. Rocking your baby in a rocking chair or glider, or using a motorized baby swing, vibrating bouncy seat or an automatic cradle are other time-honored ways to help the cries stop.

Pacifiers. Many babies are happiest when sucking on something, whether that is a pacifier or your (clean) finger in a pinch. Babies have a natural sucking reflex, and sucking can steady your baby’s heart rate and calm thrashing arms and legs.

Your voice. Singing a song or nursery rhyme will let your baby know that you are there with her. It doesn’t matter if you sing offkey or if you sing a rock tune or croon a lullaby.

White noise. It may seem counter-intuitive, but newborns are often soothed by the steady roar of white noise that blocks out other sounds. While developing in the womb, babies are used to the noise of mom’s bodily sounds, such as a beating heart, so they feel right at home amid noise machines, vacuum cleaners, and fans.

Diet. If you are breastfeeding, consider what you are eating that might cause your newborn to have gas or stomach pain. Babies’ digestive systems are still developing, so they may have difficulty processing some of the food you are eating. Check with your doctor about changes that might help. 

FREDERICK SCHENK FINDS GREAT VALUE IN SERVING ON THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR BOARD by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

F

rederick Schenk’s commitment extends across his personal and professional life, exemplified by his loyalty to his family, law firm, and the 22nd District Agricultural Association Board of Directors. As an attorney, board member, husband, and father, Frederick serves the San Diego community in many capacities. Appointed in 2002 to the 22nd District Agricultural Association, otherwise known as the Del Mar Fairgrounds Board, Frederick has played a variety of roles in the growth and success of the organization, most recently serving as president. Of his accomplishments, he stated, “I am especially proud of the way in which we have expanded community outreach and educational programs at the San Diego County Fair.” This includes healthy eating education, unique agricultural and livestock experiences, and the Don Diego Scholarship Fund that provides buses for children who would not otherwise be able to attend the fair. The board has also made major alterations to the turf and dirt tracks, ensuring a safer facility for the horses and jockeys. They also run a recycling program that diverts over 90 percent of the materials from the fair, a financial benefit of over $1.2 million. As for the future, Frederick shared, “I would like to see our fairgrounds increase the number of people who are able to access our magnificent property during peak seasons while lowering the need for automobile traffic to the grounds.” A seasonal train stop tops his wish list. As a board

member, he acknowledged, “I hope to continue to play an important role in running this worldclass facility, focusing on agriculture, education, entertainment, recreation, and sustainability.” Frederick has also served with the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, the Civil Justice Foundation, and the National Board of Governors of the American Association of Justice. One of his proudest volunteer accomplishments was successfully representing a young man who lost his wife in the 9/11 attacks through Trial Lawyers Care, the nonprofit organization that provided free legal services for families impacted by 9/11.

LIFELONG WELLNESS Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy Offers a Total-Body Approach at Their Studios in Carmel Valley and Scripps Ranch by SHYANNE LOPEZ | photos by Tyler McElhaney

W

hether you are training for a sport, rehabilitating from an injury, or looking for overall health and fitness, Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy offers classes, programs, and seminars that can help clients meet their health and fitness goals faster than ever. Originally established in Scripps Ranch in 2013, the studio’s success has led to the recent opening of a second location in Carmel Valley. The expansion will allow for more community members to benefit from Pukka’s unique programs. Pukka Founder Sharon Manzuk is a licensed physical therapist and Certified Ergonomic Evaluation Specialist who was inspired to open her studio after becoming a PMA Certified Pilates Teacher and personally experiencing the healing benefits of Pilates for her chronic back pain. Sharon, who holds a master’s degree in Physical Therapy, has worked in the healthcare industry for more than 20 years. Together with her staff of PMA Certified Pilates Teachers and licensed physical therapists, Sharon’s method provides a more total-body approach for a client’s health and fitness journey. “As therapists, we utilize our knowledge and highly trained skills to properly diagnose and treat areas of soft tissue and joint dysfunction anywhere in your body,” Sharon explained. “As Pilates practitioners, we focus on the quality of movement and identify areas of decreased muscular control and mobility in need of the Pilates work.”

28 • 92130Magazine.com • April | May 2016

With this unique structure, Pukka stands out as a studio that provides a high level of expertise. This is because there is less room for injury when practicing Pilates with a licensed physical therapist. “Many clients have orthopedic conditions that require exercise adjustments, and as therapists, we are best suited to make those adjustments,” said Sharon. Pukka also provides an intimate experience with their small semi-private class sizes and one-on-one private sessions. In addition to traditional Pilates fitness classes, Pukka holds specialized classes and seminars such as Healthy Back Pilates, Fitness for Golf, Myofascial Stretching classes, Pilates for Parkinson’s Disease, Ergonomics, and more.

All classes and programs can be modified to accommodate clients with various conditions and injuries. A Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy Teaching Training Program is also offered throughout the year, taught by Sharon herself. The unique combination of services and classes are meeting the needs of a wide group of local residents. From those just starting an exercise program to competitive athletes, Pukka’s experienced therapists and teachers provide clients with individualized attention, the optimal exercise experience, and successful outcomes for a long and healthy life. 

eanne Motsenbocker founded her business Motsenbocker Properties on honest relationships and good communication. “I consider it an honor and privilege to be trusted with what to most people is their largest and most important investment – their home,” said Deanne. She’s proud that her business has grown primarily through client referrals. “People feel they are helping their friends and family by referring them to me when they need a Realtor,” she said. “I believe strongly in treating every client with the special attention they deserve.” That special attention begins from the moment someone starts considering buying or selling a home and reaches out for advice, and lasts beyond the close of escrow. She helps sellers by providing market information, strategies, and staging, and she loves finding just the right home for buyers. Whether clients are searching for their first home, seeking a larger home as their family grows, or downsizing as children move out, Deanne knows how to listen and learn what is important to people, and has a penchant for helping them achieve their goals. As a

Certified Negotiation Expert, she excels at bringing people together and guiding them through a smooth escrow and closing. Afterwards, she’s always available to answer questions about home ownership or provide service referrals. Real estate runs in the family, and Deanne started out with a formidable body of knowledge from day one. “My mother had been a Realtor for 45 years, so I knew firsthand the commitment it takes to have a successful real estate business,” explained Deanne. She combined her understanding of real estate with the experience gathered from other branches of her career. After earning her degree in Journalism and Advertising from University of Oregon, Deanne bought and sold radio and TV advertising in San Diego, honing her business and negotiation skills. She later returned to school to earn a master’s degree in Counseling and School Psychology – as a single mother of young children, she wanted to work on a school calendar schedule. “As my children got older, though, the real estate bug was biting,” said Deanne with a smile. She launched her business in

Northern California in 2005, and finally moved herself and her business to San Diego in 2010. Deanne’s son Ryan joined Motsenbocker Properties earlier this year. Ryan, who has a degree in Business Managment from SDSU and is a licensed Realtor, brings his tech savviness, great communication skills, and shares his mother’s energy and enthusiasm for helping others and connecting with clients.  SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

OF

AND

THE

IMPORTANCE MOUTH FACIAL PROTECTION by Tarkan Sidal, DDS, MD

I

t’s that time of year again – April is National Facial Protection Month. Leading organizations such as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), American Dental Association (ADA), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and the Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD) work together to create public awareness of the importance of wearing protective gear to guard your face and mouth while playing sports. Spring may bring positive sentiment to our daily lives, but it traditionally also brings us many patients suffering with head, face, and mouth injuries resulting from sports accidents. Many injuries can be easily prevented with the use of safety equipment like helmets, face guards, and mouth guards. The head and face are integrated anatomically in such a way that statistically, when injuries occur, sinuses will absorb a frontal impact similar to airbag technology or “crumple zones” in modern cars. This design protects the subject from a more serious brain injury, but at the expense of the facial fractures. Wearing protective head and face gear will give you an extra level of protection. Mouth guards protect the teeth from being knocked out and fractured, and also prevent injuries to the bone, tissues enveloping them, and the jaw joints. Having a mouth guard constructed takes just one easy visit to your dentist’s office. After a mold is made of your teeth’s impressions, your custom mouth guard will be ready for use at the following visit. A mouth guard not only protects teeth but also allows for normal speech and breathing. Also, protecting your eyes with impact resistant goggles will protect two of your most important organs. There are numerous published studies that recognize the importance of injury patterns by age. In adults, with aging, healing from trauma changes somewhat but the pattern of

injury generally doesn’t. There is an age group of patients with traumatic injuries that needs our special attention – kids. As children grow and participate in more independent activities, their cognition and judgment also grow, making them more prone to injuries from playground activities and other age-related sports. The most common childhood injuries are from playgrounds, bicycling, soccer, basketball, and football. It is important as parents and caregivers to create a peace of mind by encouraging children and adults to enjoy sports while taking basic precautions to prevent unwanted injuries. Helmets, face guards, eye protection, and mouth guards in general are significantly cost efficient when compared to the medical costs of an injury; not to mention the psychological burden of injury, which can have effects lingering long after the metabolic healing. Helmet technology is another gift to modern man with its versatile design, and can also be part of the fun by adding your team logo. It is prudent to talk with your dentist about which activities you and your family are interested in, and ask about how to make sure your teeth and face can be protected. 

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Don Diego’s 30th Anniversary

Since it was founded in 1986 as a tribute to actor Tom Hernandez, the nonprofit Don Diego Scholarship Foundation has worked to preserve San Diego’s deep agricultural roots while bringing people together to support future generations of leaders in pursuit of their college career and goals. The foundation, which was established as a facet of the San Diego County Fair and the Del Mar Fairgrounds, originally provided scholarships on a modest scale. Over the years, thanks to an increasing pool of generous donors, Don Diego’s scholarships have increased from $1,000 to three students each to $44,000 shared between 14 students annually, with the most outstanding of students receiving $10,000. “We’re most proud of our 165 scholarship recipients, who have used the $572,500 in funding to pursue their college and career goals and give back to their community,” said Executive Director Chana Mannen. From Stanford to MIT to numerous state universities, scholarship recipients have carved out a national footprint of higher education. To learn more about the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation visit www.diegoscholarship.org.

Supportive Housing Bill

Assembly Bill 1500 recently passed unanimously through the State Assembly. The legislation, by San Diego Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, aims to allow local governments to create more housing opportunities for the homeless. “I am pleased that my bill, which would enable cities and counties to plan for the construction of supportive and transitional housing projects, passed the Assembly,” said Maienschein. “Many of our homeless also suffer from some form of mental illness, and these individuals are the ones who have the greatest need for stable housing.” The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that there were 115,738 homeless Californians in 2015 – 21 percent of the homeless population nationwide. Many social service experts in the state advocate housing-first strategy; by offering safe, secure housing, individuals and families are better able to make use of other necessary services and opportunities to get back on their feet.

Gala Fundraiser for Cancer Research

Local community members, physicians, and cancer survivors will come together at the Grand Del Mar on April 16 for the the 35th Annual Moores Cancer Center Gala, also known as the SPARK Gala. The event is an opportunity for the community to recognize the advances made in the fight against cancer while garnering support to spur new discoveries. Last year, the event raised more than $5 million for the UCSD Moores Cancer Center through the generosity of guests, as well as matching gifts. The gala will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner, an auction, and a live music performance. Proceeds from the event will benefit patient care and research at the Cancer Center, including helping to launch the new Cancer Immunotherapy Program. Sponsorships are available. For event details and reservations visit www.sparkgala.org or call 858-534-4289. To learn more about the UCSD Moores Cancer Center visit www.cancer.ucsd.edu.

Cinco de Mayo Block Party

Members of the Pacific Highlands Ranch (PHR) community will host the Annual Cinco de Mayo Block Party after a three-year hiatus. The event – which garnered more than 300 guests the last year it ran – offers family fun for all. “This is a community gathering to meet new neighbors, make friends, have fun, and network,” said Aaron Johnson, PHR community watch coordinator. Guests will enjoy live music, raffle prizes, food trucks, and refreshments at the free festival. For kids, there will be facepainting, games, bounce houses, firetrucks, and more. Attendees are also encouraged to enter contests for the best jalapeño and guacamole, with the latter contest being judged by District One Councilmember Sherri Lightner. To enter either contest email Aaron at abj600@gmail.com prior to April 29. The event, open to all Carmel Valley residents, will take place May 7 from 2 to 7 p.m. on Cornflower Trail in 92130. A portion of funds generated from sponsorship and raffle ticket sales will go to Rady Children’s Hospital.

High Tea Fashion Show photo by Spark Photography

The 6th Annual High Tea Fashion Show, a collaborative charity event hosted by Soroptimist International of Poway and Soroptimist International of Rancho Bernardo, is scheduled for May 15 at 1 p.m. at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Co-chairs Pam Warnock and Ginny Brown have been hard at work since September planning their organizations’ largest fundraiser of the year. The event benefits the Soroptimists’ Transitional Housing Program, which provides apartments for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Over the years, the program has helped 51 families make a new start on a better life. The High Tea Fashion Show will be emceed by CBS8 evening news anchor Carlo Cecchetto, and the fashion show will be presented by student designers from Palomar College’s Fashion Design and Merchandising Department. CCA Hosts Writers’ Conference

Canyon Crest Academy’s (CCA) Creative Writing Club recently hosted their 5th Annual Canyon Crest Academy Writers’ Conference, which is student-run and the only free writing conference for high school students in the country. The CCA Writers’ Conference’s reputation for inspirational workshops and enthusiastic student attendees continues to grow, attracting 220 students from around San Diego County this year. The workshops were hosted by a record number of talent including New York Times bestselling and award-winning authors, an Emmynominated writer, director, and performer, a TV show scriptwriter, a songwriter named Discovery of the Year by Sirius XM radio, and many more. The event, which is important to young San Diego writers, continues to be free due to the generosity of many local sponsors, as well as extensive fundraising by the school’s Creative Writing Club. Gonzalez Canyon’s Trail Makeover

The Gonzalez Canyon Friends Group, a subgroup of the nonprofit San Diego Canyonlands (SDC), is made up of local volunteers who come together to take care of local trails. Recently, they outdid themselves by significantly improving the appearance and functionality of the trail bordering Torrey Pines Dog Park. The project, funded largely by donors, improves safety by separating trail users from the off-leash dog park area. Miranda Hyldahl, SDC Programs and Outreach Coordinator, was told by the project’s contractor, “At least 20 people approached us to ask what we were doing. Once we explained, every person was excited and grateful for the improvements.” For those interested in helping to improve local trails, the Friends Group has routine stewardship events the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., meeting at the Sword Way trail head. To learn more contact Miranda at miranda@sdcanyonlands.org or visit www.sdcanyonlands.org.

Babysitting Simplified

College Nannies + Tutors (CNT), a local child care and education service, has developed the My Sitters™ App to help parents connect with reliable and qualified sitters with a passion for caring for children. The app is simple and easy to use. Once downloaded, parents set up a time for an in-home consultation to help College Sitters match them with the right sitters. After the meeting, a set of screened, reference checked, and CNT-certified sitters are assigned to each family. Whenever care is needed, booking is as easy as sending a text. Parents can pull up a calendar and scroll through available sitters. When they’ve chosen their favorite, they can book on their phone. Plus, there’s no reason to stop at the ATM – parents are billed through the app only for hours used. Learn more at www.collegenanniesandtutors.com/app.

ALRSD’s April Affair Returns

Del Mar Pines School, a leading private kindergarten through sixth grade school in Carmel Valley, has announced the completion of its new two-story building. A new building was a longtime dream of school Director Marci McCord. With the help of the Del Mar Pines Foundation for Education, parents, alumni, and the Gallagher family, that dream came true. Funded and built in under a year, the vision for the new building was not to add more students but to offer current students more. “I am very excited about the new opportunities for learning and deeper exploration our students can now benefit from,” said Marci. The campus expansion created a new sixth grade classroom and library. It also made room for a dedicated science and Spanish lab and performing arts room. Learn more at www.delmarpines.com.

Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito’s (ALRSD) April Affair will be returning to the Carlsbad Sheraton Resort and Spa on April 16. As an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, events like the April Affair help ALRSD fund their philanthropic programs, which are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of children and adults affected by trauma, violence, and poverty. In 2015, ALRSD was able to raise and donate $70,000 to help clothe school children from struggling families, $14,000 to support local North County school libraries, $5,000 to support sixth grade camp tuition scholarships, $3,500 to provide an immediate new start for survivors of sexual assault, and much more. Pat Brown, formerly Chief Weather Anchor at ABC Channel 10, will emcee the event, and the authors of the novel The Gift of the Twin Houses, Victoria and David Povall, will speak and share their experiences in writing. Other highlights include live entertainment by the Manhattan Transfer tribute group, Transfer Tribute, as well as a silent auction and opportunity baskets. Outside and Unplugged Outpost Summer Camps Have a Unique Take on a Traditional Experience by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by Outpost Summer Camps

T

he summer camp experience is a powerful developmental opportunity for American children, with an over-100-year history. “When I moved to San Diego in 2001 to start this camp,” explained Stuart Jones, Outpost Summer Camp Director and Owner, “there were not a lot of quality summer camp opportunities for local children.” The purpose of Outpost Summer Camps, serving Carmel Valley and surrounding communities for 15 seasons, is to provide the best of this enduring tradition. The program offers three-week sessions for three different age groups: “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different groups,” Stuart said, “but all share in the same philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and coming from the minds of the campers themselves.” Outpost Summer Camp programs run between mid-June and midAugust and are held in different locations, according to age group, in Poway and PQ. It is 100 percent outdoors and device free. “We call it ‘outside and unplugged,’” Stuart smiled. “We keep our camp groups very small with no more than 12 campers per group, our sessions are three weeks long (providing an opportunity for everyone to feel connected and form lasting relationships), and we offer door-to-door transportation.”

Outpost also has a very small staff to camper ratio, with generally one counselor to six campers, and sometimes one to four. Outpost’s creative day camp format provides a similar feeling to an overnight, traditional summer camp, which is the hallmark of the Outpost program. Campers can learn names, get comfortable with routines, make and keep friends, learn songs and games, and feel completely at home. This differs from typical week-long, single-activity focused camps in the area. Children participate in a wide variety of camp activities – for example, in the Senior Outpost program – rock climbing, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, conquering a ropes course, or other high adventure activities. As longtime child development professionals, Stuart and his wife Kelly have worked hard to create an atmosphere at Outpost to enrich and develop the social, emotional, and physical skills of each camper. They hire, train, and retain their director team from their best counselors, most of whom have invested 8 to 10 years in the organization. They’ve been accredited by the American Camp Association since inception, which requires a camp to meet or exceed 300+ standards of superiority and safety. “Finally,” Stuart shared, “camp professionals from all over the country have visited our program, as we’ve developed a high-quality reputation for our traditional programming and staff training excellence nationwide.” 

THERAPEUTIC LITERACY CENTER

W

hile summer vacation offers ample time for students to run, play, and exercise their bodies, it also offers the perfect opportunity to exercise their minds. During the busy school year, students may not get the one-on-one time with a teacher or tutor nor the therapy to develop their underlying weaknesses in learning skills. This is where the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) comes in. While the center, located in Solana Beach, offers specialized training to students year-round, they utilize the extra time that summer affords by offering specialized camp programs to prepare children for success when school starts in the fall. Their summer programming includes an intensive therapy to overcome challenges and learning disabilities by focusing on underlying learning skills, as well as a learning “bootcamp” for children that are strong in their underlying skills but need work in the areas of math, handwriting, or keyboarding. All of TLC’s programs can help a student be successful in the Common Core curriculum. TLC’s summer programs include both group learning experiences and individualized one-on-one sessions, provided by specially trained clinicians. If a full-day program is chosen, the day may even include outings to a surf camp in Solana Beach or an activity at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. “A cognitive bootcamp mixed with hours of outdoor exercise is the perfect summer combination for children wanting to enter their next grade level with confidence in their success,” said Maria Bagby, TLC Executive Director. Because spaces fill up quickly, early registration is encouraged. To learn more about TLC and how they can help eliminate learning challenges in reading, writing, and math visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200. 

They’ll also make arts and crafts, help design sets, and participate in a costumed performance with fellow campers. SPAA offers musical theatre dance camps for ages 5 through 12 , Create-Your-Own Music Video camps for ages 8 to 14, ballet camps for all ages, mini-intensives for ages 10 to 18, and intermediate and pre-professional intensives for advanced dancers who audition. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 14 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of ten different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 14 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. ANTI-AGING DENTAL CARE Dr. Roya Mirkhan and Her Team Prioritize Individualized Patient Care at Advanced Dentistry and Implants at Scripps Del Mar in Carmel Valley by LIZ ONUFER | photo provided by Advanced Dental Implants

D

r. Roya Mirkhan has developed a solid reputation, earning the title of one of “America’s Top Dentists” by the Consumer Research Council of America for the past nine consecutive years. Alongside this well-deserved award, she has also been named one of San Diego’s Top Doctors and Dentists for years of exceptional work and success. Advanced Dentistry and Implants specializes in anti-aging dental treatment devoted to restoring and enhancing the natural beauty of your smile by using conservative, state of the art procedures that will result in beautiful, healthy, and long-lasting smiles. “Every smile we create is designed to enhance not just the mouth but the overall appearance of our patients,” explained Dr. Mirkhan. Restoring lost and missing teeth is another specialty area of the team. The all-in-one same day dental implant procedure, to replace one or more more missing teeth, takes place in a single appointment in one office, eliminating the need to go to multiple offices and through multiple phases of treatment. This is a great option that restores function and chewing ability while looking and feeling natural. The whitening and maintenance programs at Advanced Dentistry and Implants also help their patients maintain a youthful appearance. Dr. Mirkhan acknowledged, “It is so rewarding to see someone going from hiding their smile

to someone who has natural-looking teeth and shows their smile and can be happy.” Dr. Mirkhan’s commitment to her patients’ health and well-being is evident in her philosophy. “We cater to each patient based on their specific needs with attention to detail, creating natural smiles,” she stated. Even patients who have been told by other dentists that no solution was possible have found answers at Advanced Dentistry and Implants. From same day dental implants and full mouth rehabilitation to Invisalign clear braces for adults, Dr. Mirhkan and her team combine personalized care with experience and expertise. Dr. Mirkhan has served thousands of patients since 1998, when she established her private practice in San Diego. The central location at Scripps Medical Offices in Del Mar/ Carmel Valley, the long-term relationships, and the commitment to the highest standards in health and well-being of the patients has earned Advanced Dentistry and Implants top awards, and even more importantly, recognition from their patients. The testimonials on their website, www.lovemyteeth.com, offer the evidence from first-hand experiences at Advanced Dentistry and Implants. As one long-time patient Patrick D. acknowledged, “Her attention to detail, the thoroughness of the examination, coupled with

Kathy Krevat Promotes the Craft of Writing by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

hat began as a hobby for Kathy Krevat has become her road to best-selling author. Author of the Chocolate Covered Mystery series, Kathy, a Carmel Valley resident since 1999, has found her passion in a writing career and supporting art education for youth. Kathy originally worked in marketing and public relations. She grew up in western Pennsylvania and started her career in New York City and Silicon Valley. Once her daughters were born, Kathy transitioned to the role of stay-at-home mom. “I started writing as a hobby when my youngest daughter began attending preschool five mornings a week (anything to avoid housework!) thinking I would have all kinds of time to write,” she explained. “I also thought that since I knew how to write ad copy, writing a book would be easy. I was so wrong!” Kathy quickly realized she would have to learn the craft of writing a novel, as well as the publishing business. She found great support in attending writing groups and workshops and reading books on writing. “There are so many opportunities to learn, from online workshops to classes and conferences to writing blogs to craft books,” Kathy shared. “If you keep at it, and keep learning, you will conquer those areas that need help and you will get better.” To support those learning the craft, Kathy is involved with the Canyon Crest Academy Writers’ Conference held every February. It's the only free writing conference for high school students in the country. “Our speakers are not only successful writing professionals but also excellent presenters who love to come back year after year to interact with students who love writing so much they are willing to spend their free Saturday learning about it,” Kathy acknowledged. She also serves as vice president of the Playwrights Project, an organization promoting literacy, communication, and creativity through play-writing programs and theater productions. Publishing under her pen name, Kathy Aarons, her third book of the series, Behind Chocolate Bars, will be out in October 2016. “In the series, Chocolatier Michelle Serrano and bookstore owner Erica Russell track down murderers while running their shop, Chocolates and Chapters,” she shared. Kathy is also drafting a proposal for a new mystery series, a zombie movie script, and outlining plans for a young adult book. Her advice for writers is one she models well, “Keep learning and keep writing!” 

CUSTOMER CARE COMES FIRST The Carmel Valley Pharmacy Is Committed to Meeting Individual Customer Needs

fter many years working as a pharmacist for chain pharmacies, Tarek El-Ansary believed there was a better way. With encouragement from friends in the community who were tired of dealing with chain pharmacies, Tarek opened the doors of Carmel Valley Pharmacy in December 2013. “I realized there was a need for a pharmacy to provide our community better service, compounding, and delivery,” Tarek stated. With close to two decades of experience as a pharmacist, Tarek understood the frustrations with chain pharmacies. He acknowledged, “Working for chains, it is all about the numbers and the profit at the expense of sacrificing customer service.” Today, Tarek puts customers at the top of his priority list at Carmel Valley Pharmacy. “We focus on getting you out in under 10 minutes with your prescription,” Tarek confirmed. But it’s not just the speed and efficiency that sets Carmel Valley Pharmacy apart. The expert staff, including three pharmacists and licensed technicians, specialize in customized compounding, which “allows us to work directly with the patient and their physician to tailor a treatment that is best suited for them, instead of being limited to what is manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry,” explained Tarek. This individual attention is incorporated across the business. “The first thing people notice is no long lines, a human answers the phone, we greet you with a genuine smile and try our best to accommodate every customer’s needs,” he said. The pharmacy also offers local delivery.

Walking into Carmel Valley Pharmacy, customers most often note its friendly and attentive atmosphere. “People comment how they love the way the front of the store is set up and has a unique and high-level gift shop,” Tarek shared. The pharmacy will also be providing free educational talks by board certified physicians to help customers learn about compounding and new approaches to medical conditions. With many physician and neighbor referrals, business has been growing since Tarek opened Carmel Valley Pharmacy two years ago. His goal to create a pharmacy based on helping customers and not the business’s bottom line has been a great success. 

“I REALIZED THERE WAS A NEED FOR A PHARMACY TO PROVIDE OUR COMMUNITY BETTER SERVICE, COMPOUNDING, AND DELIVERY.” Tarek and his staff focus on continued education to learn the newest advances in medical care and integrative medicine. “We are not looking to replace your traditional therapy but to integrate with it to have a better outcome for your health,” Tarek said. The pharmacy also carries a unique brand of supplements and vitamins.

STARGAZING IN SAN DIEGO

These Breathtaking Views Will Have You Seeing Stars – Literally by SHYANNE LOPEZ

B

eing surrounded by beaches, beautiful landscapes, and a sprawling city, it's no wonder we tend to keep our eyes focused on what is laid out right in front of us. While known for its sunny and clear skies, come sunset, parts of San Diego's skyline are anything but empty – you just have to look up. For years, the area has attracted professional and amateur astronomers and stargazers alike for the highly accessible view of not just stars but also our own galaxy and nearby planets. In fact, this spring, Mars will be the largest and most clear that it's been in more than a decade. It's the perfect occasion to bring out your inner astronomer. While it's tough to stargaze in highly developed areas, you can view them with ease at various rural locations in and around the county that have remained virtually untouched by city lights. So, if you're interested in catching a glimpse of the cosmos this spring, jump in your car and check out one – or all – of these unique destinations. 

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Two hours east of San Diego, you can find California's largest state park. The desert is a hot spot for professional and amateur stargazers due to its seclusion from urban lights. In fact, the park's neighboring town of Borrego Springs was designated in 2009 as the second "Dark Sky Community" in the world by the International Sky Association, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the nighttime environment.

Tierra Del Sol

Julian

Located in southeastern San Diego County is the Tierra Del Sol observing site. Established by the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA), the site is home to monthly star parties that are open to the public. Star parties offer visitors the opportunity to observe the sky through professional telescopes, and receive guided viewings from experienced astronomers. Learn more at www.sdaa.org.

Primarily known for its apple orchards, this quaint mountain town actually has night skies dark enough to host the SDAA's annual Julian StarFest each summer. This spring, you can admire and explore their starry skies by checking out nearby campgrounds or parks. If you don't feel like roughing it, the town also boasts its own astronomy-themed bed and breakfast.

Torrey Pines State Reserve While you won't see as many stars from Torrey Pines State Reserve, just north of La Jolla, it offers darker skies than expected and doesn't require a road trip. The beach offers the perfect location to look up at the cosmos, complete with the sound of crashing waves. Torrey Pines stays open until 11 p.m., and since it won't be peak visiting hours, catching road-side parking should be a cinch.

Homes that have acquired charm, quirks, and character within their walls – homes with soul. We take great pride in presenting unique places and their stories, and in using our innovative marketing tools and global connections to perfectly match properties with people that give them new life. In truly extraordinary homes, doors are not simply barriers, they are a graceful means of

transition. They are the guardians of retreats and the greeters of guests. Cast in steel or carved from solid wood, they are beautifully placed and hung in perfect harmony with the exterior of the house and personality within. It is this craftsmanship in every facet of a home that we look for in the properties we choose to represent. We take great pride in using our considerable experience, resources, and global connections to perfectly unite these special places with buyers who will cherish them as well as we do. Spring and summer’s natural beauty prompts quiet, new beginnings that intrigue all. If this time of year finds you beginning to consider a new

residence, allow us to assist. As a member of the Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty network, I take great pride in representing extraordinary homes with extraordinary lives. Dan Conway & Associates is an affiliate of Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty and a one-stop resource for all your real estate needs. Stop by our office at the Piazza Carmel Shopping Center next to VONS and let us show you! 
