Summer Dance Camps! Junior Summer Dance Intensive for the dedicated 10-14 year olds, month of July 3 & 4-Day Advance Ballet Workshops for Professionals & Pre-Pro, in August Budding Ballerinas Workshops every Saturday in Summer 10am-12pm for 5, 6 & 7 year olds Owner & Director Marie Arts is proud to offer holistic and progressive ballet training to children, teens & adults, with a collaborative, community atmosphere: "Over the years I have developed a truly inspiring program with a series of exercises and distinctions where dancers realize they are artists and creators with their own style,” says Arts. “Not only does their ballet & dance technique improve quickly, but they also expand their capacity for building their authentic stage presence, making them a bright light on stage and in the world.”

“Unlike many ballet schools in the Carmel Valley area, DMB is a serious studio without all the unnecessary fluff. What I admire about DMB is that art and learning come first. Dancers shine plenty without the need for outrageously priced costumes and makeup. Glitz and glamour do not become the focal point of their shows. Instead, Marie, Jenny and Amanda emphasize personal development tailored to each individual. For example, students are encouraged to express their creativity through improvisation exercises, while at the same time, ensuring that proper technique is taught. Older students have the opportunity to choreograph showcase pieces for performances. Grace and beauty come from within which is the real lesson here, and DMB does a fine job of it." - L.T.

hard to flip through the pages of your 92130 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).

T

he McKenna family – parents Mark and Susan, and their four children: Brandon (22), Collin (21), Austin (18) and Megan (14) – all epitomize happiness. Whether they’re outdoors grilling delicious food and lounging by the pool or taking one of their many vacations to Hawaii, the McKennas know how to enjoy life to the fullest. When they’re not relaxing in tranquil environments, the four McKenna children are all busy preparing for their futures. Brandon is about to graduate from Oberlin College, where he was the captain

of the tennis team. Collin is a junior at USD. Austin is a recent graduate of Cathedral Catholic High School, and he’ll be attending either USD or CSU in the fall. Megan will be a student at Cathedral in the fall. When discussing the beloved Fairbanks Highlands neighborhood that the family calls home, Susan commented, “We love the wide open spaces, and our neighbors are so friendly.” Mark added, “The community here is warm and inviting. As far as we are concerned, there is no better place to live!” That is quite a statement, considering the McKennas have dwelled in many different locations throughout their lives. With Susan hailing from Los Angeles, and Mark being raised in Pittsburgh, the two met in Malibu, and have lived in both Colorado and Hawaii before finding their forever home in Carmel Valley. Their current lifestyle incorporates the best of all of their past residences. Mark proclaimed, “We had lived in Colorado for some years, so a large yard was a must!” Susan then mentioned, “We lived in Hawaii for a year, so warm weather and being close to the ocean was also a must!” Being in Hawaii was actually life-changing for the McKennas. It inspired Mark and Susan to combine their skills and open a cupcake business in Oceanside that embodies the essence and flair of Hawaii. Mark, who is a chef, and Susan, who has a background in sales and marketing, named their dessert shop Ohana Cupcakes, and its tropical paradise ambiance offers up a child-centric sense of fun. Summing up the philosophy behind the name for their business, Susan exclaimed, “Ohana means family in Hawaiian, and that is what we are all about!” 

Tea & Tonic ANNUAL FUNDRAISER INCREASES AWARENESS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

T

he Center for Community Solutions (CCS) held their 17 th Annual Tea & Tonic event in late May to raise much-needed funds in support of their mission to prevent domestic violence and other types of assault. Since 1969, the San Diego-based nonprofit has been committed to solving the problems of relationship violence and abuse, improving the lives of survivors, and changing the social conditions that tolerate their existence. One of their largest annual events, this year’s fundraiser hosted a number of guests that contributed to the cause. Among the crowd was keynote speaker and TV star AnnaLynne McCord. AnnaLynne is an actor, writer, and director best known for her roles in Nip/Tuck and 90210. A longtime activist, AnnaLynne is passionate about empowering young

women to overcome abuse. Her genuine efforts have even been recognized by Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro, who awarded AnnaLynne the United States Congressional Honor for her work. In addition to the keynote speech, guests experienced a champagne reception, high tea service, a raffle, and musical entertainment. To keep with the afternoon’s overall theme of empowerment, various community heroes were honored on stage. Tea & Tonic also offered CCS a platform to raise overall awareness of its various types of assistance. All proceeds from the afternoon benefited the support, prevention, and intervention programs that CCS provides for more than 10,000 victims each year. For more information visit www.ccssd.org. 

Creative Outlet Julia Camilleri Leads Canyon Crest Academy’s Creative Writing Club

A

s an incoming senior at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA), Julia Camilleri is no stranger to leadership and hard work. At the beginning of her sophomore year, she became president of the CCA Creative Writing Club, and has worked diligently ever since to expand and promote the club and its mission. “The club creates a safe and open environment to share and discuss creative writing projects and techniques. We also host a free writing conference for local high school students, and this year I added a community service component to the club,” stated Julia. Organizing the annual writers’ conference is a major component of Julia’s role as president, and each year

she works with speakers, coordinates student and teacher volunteers, and hosts the conference panel sessions. “I feel that the free conference provides an enriching experience for all the high school students who attend. Every year, we receive very positive feedback from attendees, and this last year, I wanted to reach out to a wider audience,” related Julia. The Creative Writing Club, along with Words Alive and many adult and student volunteers, organized a conference geared toward at-risk teens. According to Julia, this conference was very successful and gave many teens a much-needed creative outlet. In addition to her involvement in CCA’s Creative Writing Club, Julia currently plays club volleyball, participates in Girl Scouts, and sings in the parish choir at St. Therese of Carmel. Singing is a family endeavor for the Camilleris – Julia’s older sister Daniela is a classical singer with the desire to become an opera singer. “I am inspired by Daniela because she works very hard to be successful in school and her career. She will be president of the Student Association at the Eastman School of Music next year,” Julia said proudly. Julia’s favorite subject in school is biology, and she hopes to become a pediatrician. “I love learning about how things work around us from a biological perspective. This subject has fascinated me since my life science class in middle school,” stated Julia, who would like to major in biology and pre-med at UC Davis, UC San Diego, or Cal Poly Pomona. She will hone her biology skills this summer by participating in a pediatric rotation at a hospital in Malta. “My entire family is from Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean. This is a unique opportunity, and I am looking forward to the experience,” revealed Julia. 

SLAM ALS

LOCAL FAMILY STARTS ALS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

C

ole Spector, 92130 local and fifth grader at Solana Pacific Elementary School, recently helped host an assembly for 650 of his peers that highlighted the importance of finding a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Cole’s aunt Marjie Block has lived with ALS for seven years, so spreading awareness of the disease is a mission that is close to his family’s heart. His aunt Deborah Silver and cousin Madison Silver founded the social media campaign SLAM ALS for ALS Awareness Month in May, which became the inspiration for the assembly. “My aunt and cousin started this national campaign, SLAM ALS, and I wanted to help San Diego get involved. I told my principal Mrs. Fregoso about my plan, and she told me about Mrs. Kelly Monahan, a teacher at Solana Pacific who had just spoken to her about her uncle being diagnosed with ALS,” Cole explained. “Mrs. Fregosa

introduced Mrs. Monahan to me and we planned a presentation together!” The concept of SLAM ALS is similar to that of the Ice Bucket Challenge. In this particular campaign, participants are encouraged to record themselves “slamming” something – a door, book, hockey stick, etc. – and then post the video to their social media accounts with the hashtag “SlamALS.” These “Slambassadors” are encouraged to be creative but safe. At the Solana Pacific assembly, 650 students slammed their foot down at one time in support of SLAM ALS. Later that day, Cole’s classmates also slammed their books for the cause. Cole shared, “I hope more people learn what ALS is, I hope they raise a lot of money for research, and I hope they find a cure soon to save my aunt’s life as well as all the others diagnosed.” To donate or learn more about participating visit www.slamals.org 

Wisdom Tooth Surgery Is

Necessary? by Tarkan Sidal, DDS, MD

S

urgical management of impacted third molars (wisdom teeth) is a common treatment frequently offered in oral and maxillofacial surgery offices. Despite how common the treatment is, removing wisdom teeth is not without controversy – some critics would argue that in the absence of disease or symptoms, patients would be subjected to pain, risk, and unfavorable economic outcome. However, strong peer reviewed research shows that retained wisdom teeth may involve periodontal pathology (gum disease) despite patients showing no symptoms. The negative impact of periodontal pathology may not be limited to the wisdom teeth region, but rather can have systemic (bodily) affects.

Patients with no symptoms also may have carious wisdom teeth, eventually decaying the tooth next to it. Wisdom teeth should be considered for removal when there is clinical and radiographic evidence of acute or chronic periodontitis (gum disease), pericoronitis (infection and inflammation of excess tissue over the impacted tooth), negative impact on adjacent teeth or not enough space in the jaw forcing the teeth to erupt improperly and grow in sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. In most patients, some variation of these findings are present, making the person a candidate for wisdom teeth removal. In addition, wisdom teeth that are in the area of future jaw surgery or are interfering with orthodontic care also should be removed. All in all, the decision of wisdom teeth removal comes to life in most cases with two doctors bringing their expertise to the table,

a general dentist and an oral surgeon. In an orthodontic care scenario, a general dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon may work in concert to make a recommendation in the patient’s best interest. Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When they are partially erupted or have a communication with the oral cavity, the gum opening around the teeth can allow food and bacteria to enter an uncleansible space around the tooth. This condition will eventually cause an infection and/or cavities and gum disease. The result: swelling, discomfort, pain, and illness. The impingement from the incorrectly erupting wisdom teeth may damage other teeth and disrupt the natural alignment of teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Removal of offending impacted teeth might prevent possible future problems of this nature. 

ohn and Melissa Jacobi, who moved to Carmel Valley from Del Mar six years ago, have done an amazing job raising their three children into adulthood. Melissa professed, “We love spending time with our kids, and have been so blessed to be a part of their activities, their sports, and their social lives.” That gratefulness has even been extended to many other families, thanks to the Jacobis’ involvement with the North County-based nonprofit, Bells of Freedom. The purpose of Bells of Freedom is to provide financial and emotional support to San Diego military families that are struggling, and the organization contributes 100 percent of its donations to those families in need. The Jacobis are especially involved in the process of “adopting” Camp Pendleton families during the holiday season and contribute a large gift basket, as well as provide emergency funds as needed throughout the year. John commented, “It brings us such joy to help and to pay it forward.” Melissa added, “We are so thankful for the opportunity to volunteer. It has enriched our lives!” The couple has been committed to Bells of Freedom for 14 years now, and it is just one of the many ways they have volunteered over the years. For

example, both have served breakfast at the Ronald McDonald House and designed, planned, set up, and cleaned up for such Torrey Pines High School events as winter formal and Grad Nite. In addition, John has coached softball, little league, soccer, and even Pop Warner football teams, and Melissa has managed various duties for Torrey Pines Pop Warner Cheer. John, who provides wholesale insurance to car dealers, and Melissa, who is an interior designer, met each other 28 years ago on a blind date. They now love spending as much time as possible with their grown children, who range in age from 19 to 25. Favorite shared activities include boating, skiing, and traveling together. The Jacobis are extremely happy to call the Santa Fe Summit neighborhood their home. John revealed, “Our friends live here, and our involvement with such organizations as the Bells of Freedom has brought us the best friends anyone can have.” Melissa agreed, and admitted, “We feel very grateful to be a part of this amazing community.” 

Soroptimist High Tea & Fashion Show ANNUAL FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

N

early 400 people attended the 6th Annual High Tea & Fashion Show, held at 92130’s Fairmont Grand Del Mar, to support Soroptimist International of Rancho Bernardo and Soroptimist International of Poway’s Transitional Housing Program. The program provides housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children, as well as other programs supporting women and girls. The event was co-chaired by SIRB club members Pam Warnock and Ginny Brown. The main purpose of the annual event is to raise funds to provide a safe and supportive living environment for battered women and their children. Since 1996, the Poway and Rancho Bernardo clubs have helped over 51 mothers and 115 children reclaim their lives. After the success of last year’s event, the clubs were able to add another apartment to the Transitional Housing Program for women moving away from dependency and abuse.

This year’s fashion show featured students from Palomar College’s Fashion Design & Merchandising Department, providing a learning opportunity for them as they prepare to launch their careers. The Alice in Wonderland characters in costumes, sewn by former Palomar student Cindee Ferris, were a great surprise to all in attendance. The gala, auction, and fashion show grossed over $93,000 this year, with which the clubs hope to be able to add yet another apartment to the program. The clubs were pleased with the overwhelming response received from both sponsors and attendees alike. Without the combined effort of both the Rancho Bernardo and Poway clubs, this event would not have been possible. To learn more about the Soroptimist clubs please visit www.soroptimistrb.org and www.sipoway.org. For more information about the High Tea & Fashion Show event visit www.highteafashionshow.org. 

Founded and owned by husband-wife duo Louis and Tanya McKay, North County DanceArts, Inc. They also offer musical theater workshops, competition coaching, and performances. “We can provide dance instruction for recreation and fitness or tailor a dance schedule that will lead to positions in the dance, theater, and/or film fields for students,” noted Tanya. “NCDA also offers an adult morning program that consists of many of the dance styles mentioned above and is designed specifically for busy adults.” So what’s the background of NCDA, you wonder? Prior to opening the studio, owner Louis McKay led an extensive professional career in the performing arts, working for renowned organizations such as the San Diego Opera Company, The Bright Side, and Starlight Theatre. He trained alongside dance legends including Pat Ricco, Gower Champion, and Toni Stevens. “Louis held the position of lead singer and dancer as well as the choreographer for The Debbie Reynolds Show for 10 years,” noted Tanya. “Louis’ television appearances included special guest on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, the John Davidson Show, the Mike Douglas Show, the Sonny and Cher Show, the Donny and Marie Show, and the Barbara Mandrel Show.” After retiring in 1980, Louis felt compelled to share his passion for dance and stage.

92130’s Keaton Chia has been passionate about archery since 2005. Keaton started working with the Olympic Archery in School Program (OAS) to help create a unique archery league for middle schools and high schools. The program was created by the Easton Sports Development Foundation, giving young people the opportunity to participate and excel in archery. The USA Archery Resident Athlete program is based at the Easton center as well, where many Olympic hopefuls train. Keaton said about working with Olympians, “You’re surrounded by dreamers. It’s a tough journey, so to see what kind of character they have in order to persevere and achieve this dream is amazing.” Keaton’s work with OAS has also given him the opportunity to follow his own dream of making archery more accessible for others. He appreciates being able to make a positive impact on young people. Learn more at www.esdf.org.

Seth Raffee, a sixth grader at Ocean Air Elementary School, and Alexis Maltzman, a ninth grader at Canyon Crest Academy, both residents of 92130, appeared in the California Youth Conservatory’s production of Billy Elliot the Musical, which ran from May to June. The musical production was scored by Elton John and has garnered 10 Tony Awards. Seth played the role of Michael, Billy’s insightful best friend. “Every song is fantastic, it is hard to choose my favorite,” he said. Alexis’ favorite scene was where all of the dancers and miners performed onstage together. “The perspective of both groups keeps changing. I think it is a terrific scene and a very interesting part of the show,” she shared. CYC’s training and production quality are widely considered among the best youth productions in the nation. Alexis Marxer, 11, has been accepted to the School of American Ballet’s 2016 Summer Course. The prestigious New York-based school auditions over 2,000 students for the program each year, admitting only a select group of 200. CCA Student Earns Scholarship

The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) partnered with PFLAG San Diego County to recognize deserving LGBTQ students for their exemplary academic achievements and leadership vision at the 2016 Launching Leaders Scholarship Awards Luncheon in May. The students shared an award of $15,000. Among the honorees was Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) student Ash Matheson, who earned the 2016 Richard P. Geyer Memorial Ethics Scholarship. Ash was recognized for founding the nonprofit Building Bridges as a CCA sophomore. The organization is dedicated to helping middle and high school students with special needs bond with peer mentors and focus on collaborative work in a variety of artistic disciplines, including visual arts, acting, dance, and music. Ash was inspired to pursue this project after realizing their older brother Jacob, who lives with cerebral palsy and autism, could benefit from having a creative outlet. Learn more at www.sdhdf.org.

Transforming a Medical Center

92130 resident Roberta Feinberg has played a critical role in renovating and reopening the Linda Vista Health Care Center. The center is operated by nonprofit San Diego Family Care, whose mission is to deliver high-quality medical, mental health, and dental care to Medi-Cal, Medicare, and uninsured patients. It took over a year to renovate the former supermarket into a state-of-the-art community health center, enabling an additional 40,000 visits per year. Roberta joined the center as a nurse in the ‘80s and soon after became its CEO. She has since been able to lead the transformation of the center throughout the years. This most recent expansion, which was solely self-funded, serves as a safety net of primary care for San Diego county residents, and will help lessen the burden on local hospital emergency rooms. The Linda Vista Health Center is available to everyone, regardless of economic status. Learn more at www.sdfamilycare.org.

Once On This Island

Middle School Math Field Day

San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. For more information about Red Shoe Day or to find out how you can help visit www.rmhcsd.org.

Fourteen young performers from 92130 recently lent their talents to the production Once On This Island. The musical is an original interpretation of The Little Mermaid. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. Their love has to overcome the prejudices of their society – and the obstacles set by the ominous, interfering gods of water, death, love, and the earth. Once On This Island was presented by J*Company Youth Theatre, with a talented cast of kids under the leadership of Artistic Director Joey Landwehr. The show ran in May, with all performances taking place at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. Learn more at www.sdcjc.org/jc.

Helping Animals in California

Assemblymember Brian Maienschein announced that he was recently named “Legislator of the Year” by PawPAC, a leading advocacy organization for animals in California. Maienschein received the award for authoring legislation last year to help animals in California. Two of his bills, AB 494 and AB 316 were signed into law by Governor Brown. AB 494 allows pets to be included in civil restraining orders and AB 316 allows veterinarians from other states to provide assistance in California when necessary. “It is an honor to be recognized as Legislator of the Year by PawPAC for my work to help animals in California,” he said. “I remain committed to ensuring that animals get the care and protection they need. I am proud to be recognized as a champion for the safety of animals and their owners in times of crisis.” Assemblymember Brian Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Carmel Valley, Clairemont, Del Dios, Del Mar Heights, Fairbanks Ranch, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Santa Fe, Sabre Springs, San Carlos, San Pasqual Valley, Scripps Ranch, Sorrento Valley, and Tierrasanta.

Carmel Valley resident Brian Young received a warm welcome to the UBS Wealth Management Americas (WMA) Top 35 Under 35 program. The program is an internal initiative designed to recognize advisors based on age, business statistics, and compliance history. Brian serves as a financial advisor and first vice president with WMA, and has more than 16 years of experience in financial services. A graduate of San Diego State University, he holds a business degree with specialization in finance. “To be recognized for this program, financial advisors must show an outstanding level of dedication to their clients, our firm and the industry,” said Chris Marsh, San Diego complex director for WMA.

San Diego Math Field Day was held at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla at the end of May. The event featured showings from schools around San Diego, with about 250 students participating, as well as over 30 volunteers and around 100 parents and coaches in attendance. There were nine events for up to 15 students from each school to participate in. Carmel Valley Middle School won the first place award and Pacific Trails Middle School won third place. Linette Pan, Rachel Hong, and Jae Yoon Kim were the lead organizers this year, along with the guidance of Shiv Keyal, Reed Moore, and Carol Barry. San Diego Math Field Day is an annual middle school math competition that has been running for almost 50 years, providing a venue of friendly competition to encourage interest in math and STEM fields for middle school students throughout San Diego County. Full STEAM+ Ahead

DMUSD FAMILIES VISIT CAMPUSES TO LEARN ABOUT NEW LEARNING APPROACH

T

he Del Mar Unified School District (DUMSD) recently made a huge effort to introduce parents to STEAM+, their new approach of integrated learning. This method integrates traditional subject matter, allowing students the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired or are still developing to solve tasks that relate to relevant, realworld experiences. To help families develop a better understanding of their educational programs, DMUSD held the STEAM+ Premier Family Night across each of their school sites on one night. Families were able to interact with credentialed specialists and teachers to experience how their children are learning firsthand. At each school, teams prepared a host of different activities for families to participate in. Families were able to code video games to share with others, design and build small vehicles to learn about energy, and even fashion electric circuits from Play-Doh, batteries, and wire. Of her school’s experience that night, Carmel Del Mar School Principal Jessica Morales shared, “The first annual STEAM+ Family Night at Carmel Del Mar School exhibited one of those magical

nights where you see your school community come together to learn and have fun while doing so. As I left the night, I couldn’t help but feel proud of this event and how it energized our community about integrated learning.” STEAM+, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics, is made possible through the support of the district and the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMSEF). “STEAM+ Family Premier Night was such an auspicious occasion on two fronts!,” said DMSEF President Ty Humes. “First, it highlighted the brand new STEAM+ initiative that DMUSD has deployed this year, and its impact on the continued success of education in our district. Second, simultaneously, the district succeeded in bringing together all eight schools for one event at their respective campuses. It is such a great time to be a part of this district. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the Foundation during this time of celebration.” Learn more at www.dmusd.org. For more information on DMSEF visit www.dmsef.org. 

FAST, AFFORDABLE, e r a C y Qualit MD Today Urgent Care Fills a Healthcare Void in San Diego and Places Patient Needs First by KELLEY GUSICH | photos provided by MD Today Urgent Care

W

hen Anne and Len Jurkowski, M.D., saw a void in many San Diegans’ access to quality health care, they founded MD Today Urgent Care. “Patients with non-life threatening medical emergencies often have had no alternative to a crowded emergency room (ER),” explained Len. “Likewise, patients that could not be seen by their busy primary care physicians (PCPs) would also end up in the ER.” MD Urgent Care opened its doors in 2012 to provide patients a fast, affordable alternative. With wait times typically less than 30 minutes and a cost that is a fraction of an ER visit, this practice is a part of the healthcare transformation that is placing patient needs first with quality facilities including state-of-the-art digital radiology, EKG, and point-of-care labs on site. From infants to seniors, MD Urgent Care provides walk-in medical care with services such as X-rays, stitches, lab testing, EKGs, breathing treatments, sports physicals, TB tests, immunizations, and much more. Staff members specialize in family or emergency medicine, and have the background, experience, and specialized training to make them ideal providers to care for the wide variety of patients coming in. It is unique in that it has an affiliation with XiMED Medical Group, one of the largest multi-specialty independent physician associations (IPAs) in San Diego County. “With XiMed’s support,” Len affirmed,

“MD Today is able to effectively coordinate patient care with specialists and keep patients out of the Emergency Department.” For example, if a patient walks in and through an X-Ray it is determined the patient’s foot is broken and will require surgery, they can arrange a same-day appointment with an orthopedic surgeon and provide copies of X-rays, saving the patient money and facilitating exceptional care. Local Connection Meet the Gamers Behind Treesicle, the Successful YouTube Channel by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo provided by Treesicle

T

yler Baron, Ryan Kroner, Kevin Cornea, and Grant Ball are four gamers and friends who have turned a fun pastime into a full-fledged business. Treesicle, a YouTube channel with more than 400,000 subscribers and 42.5 million views, streams video gamefocused videos four days a week. “We’ve been making videos for over two years now. I’d been watching Let’s Plays online for years (Let’s Plays are commentary over video game play) and had the desire to make my own. We started with Let’s Plays, but now we do primarily comedic and informative video game character analysis videos,” explained Tyler. The channel streams multiple shows including one series entitled The Story You Never Knew (SYNK) and another called Breaking Trees. According to Tyler, he and Kevin write the scripts for SYNK and Grant does the voiceover work. “Ryan and Grant write, film, and edit Breaking Trees, and all four of us edit SYNK due to the large amount of editing work it requires,” stated Tyler. Treesicle has become so successful that all four gamers now work full-time on the channel, an exciting development for the team. It is also exciting to note that this popular YouTube channel has

a local 92130 connection. Tyler and Ryan met in kindergarten at Solana Highlands Elementary School, attended Canyon Crest Academy, and have an affinity for the Carmel Valley community. “We loved Canyon Crest Academy and still keep in touch with many teachers there. Carmel Valley was a great place to grow up. Being so close to the beach is always a blessing," related Tyler, "and Ryan and I both spent many days each summer going to the beach and body boarding, play Frisbee, and enjoying the perfect weather." He and Ryan went on to college at University of California, Santa Barbara, where they met Kevin and Grant in the dorms during their freshman year. Looking to the future, the Treesicle team is eager to continue growing and bringing high quality, entertaining videos to a large audience. They also hope to make Treesicle their livelihood for the foreseeable future. “I love seeing a dream I’ve had for years become a reality. I’ve wanted to do this since high school, and it’s amazing to see it become my career. It’s also insanely fun to run a company with three of your best friends,” said Tyler. 

Torrey Del Mar Dentistry Offers Multi-Specialty Dental Care at One Convenient Location by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo provided by Torrey Del Mar Dentistry

“T

he way we have provided dental care over the years has evolved way beyond our expectations,” stated Dr. Jack A. Rosenson, DMD. “Keeping the best interests of my patients in mind and striving to provide the best of dental care, I made the decision to put a new specialty dental practice model together that included myself doing what I do best and also having all the dental specialists in the same office able to provide specialty care.” His plan resulted in opening Torrey Del Mar Dentistry in 2003. Today, the practice remains unique in that it offers multi-specialty dental care to patients of all ages. “Our office can provide care for all members of a person’s family, all conveniently in our one location without being referred out for specialty care,” elaborated Dr. Rosenson. Dr. Rosenson – a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine – has been practicing dentistry in San Diego for over 35 years, specializing in rehabilitative, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry and treatment for head pain, TMJ jaw, and myofascial pain disorders. Prior to relocating to San Diego, he had a cosmetic and restorative dental practice in New York City for 10 years. “Dr. Rosenson was also

actively involved as a part-time clinical instructor at the New York University School of Dentistry and participated in lectures and seminars teaching restorative techniques used by dentists today,” added Kerstin Shoberg, RDA, CDA, and manager for Torrey Del Mar Dentistry. Kerstin, who has been working for Dr. Rosenson for the past 16 years and has extensive knowledge in all areas of the dental office, explained that there are four dental specialists on staff at Torrey Del Mar Dentistry: a periodontist, a pedodontist, an endodontist, and an orthodontist. “All our staff are licensed with the Dental Board of California within their specialty,” said Kerstin. “Our office stays current with all the newest technological advances in dentistry,” she added. “We utilize laser technology with our periodontal treatment, laser teeth whitening, and offer the newest in surgical ‘pinhole’ tissue grafting techniques to treat recession of the gum tissue.” The state-of-the-art facility was designed for our patients to feel relaxed and comfortable, offering televisions in the treatment rooms and providing “only the very best in customer service,” stated Kerstin, who noted that the practice is willing to work

within any budget, and accepts most PPO and indemnity insurance plans. When asked what would be the highlight of a patient’s visit, Kerstin replied, “Affordable, high-quality dental treatment in a relaxing, pain-free environment for any and all dental treatment they and their family might need.” 

“ OUR OFFICE CAN

:::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD

THE PERFECT

PICNIC

Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL

W

hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.

LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org

MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us

OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the mission church, which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

The Selling and Buying Season Is Upon Us by DAN CONWAY

T

he California Association of Realtors (CAR) wrote, “California’s housing market is expected to improve in 2016, but a shortage of available inventory and continuing high costs are expected to limit the improvement. According to CAR’s 2016 California Housing Market Forecast, existing home sales are expected to rise in 2016 by 6.3% over 2015’s expected total.” Home prices are also expected to rise this year, although at a slower rate than last year due to a still-tight inventory supply. Bottom line: get on the interest list of a community that interests you and be ready to get qualified ahead of time. That way, when you find the right fit, you are ready to go. Realtor.com lists San Diego among the nation’s 10 hottest markets, based on the company’s listing data. It was number three on their list of real estate markets to watch in 2016. San Diego’s spot as one of the top housing markets is the result of a limited supply of homes for sale and an increased demand. Look for more construction of single-family and multifamily residences this year. While supply of the mid-level homes inventory is still low, look for some relief this year. “California’s housing market is moving in the right direction as we enter the spring home-buying season, but sales growth will likely be isolated in areas where inventory is more abundant and housing affordability is less of an issue,” said CAR President Pat “Ziggy” Zicarelli.
