Don’t Blink

ASSO C IATE E DI TO R S

I

’ve always had this strange relationship with time – more specifically, time passing. Of course, I realize that I’m aging each year as I roll past the day that my mother brought me into this world, but I’ve never felt like I was getting any older. I realize that my body is starting to feel older, and for some reason I don’t have as much hair as I once did (according to the mean photos that people have taken of me showing the back of my head). On the other hand, it’s definitely easier to grow facial hair these days – even those special blonde ones that my wife insists are actually grey, but that’s an ongoing debate and still inconclusive. Forget the physical aspects of age. I still feel young mentally – most of the time. While enjoying every last day as I approach the threshold of 43 years, I suddenly felt old this morning. It was an unexpected feeling, but I suppose it should have been predictable. Today, my youngest, my little sweet pea, my little Audrey Becca jumped onto a bus and headed out to sixth grade camp with her friends and classmates. This makes me sad. No, not because I have separation anxiety or I’m afraid that she will be homesick (I’m sure she is going to have a blast and everyone will be just fine – parents included). I’m sad because the years have gone by way too fast. My wife and I have a junior in college. She went to sixth grade camp nine years ago. Our seventh grade son went to camp last year. I was fine with both going. Today is different. Today is a humbling reminder that my little girl is charging life at a faster pace than I am prepared for. I remember some advice that my uncle once told me when talking about life and raising kids. He said, “Don’t blink... because you are going to open your eyes one day and your kids are going to be all grown up. It goes by fast. Cherish every minute.” Derrick Breaux I MUST HAVE BLINKED! Make no mistake about it, I’m Publisher trying not to blink again any time soon. I will take that great advice and do my best to cherish every minute moving forward. Thanks for being a reader of 92130 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. or the Maltzmans, every day is an adventure, which they embark on as a family. “We are a uniquely mobile and travel-centric family. We own three awardwinning wineries – Navigator Wines in Napa, Gold Creek Vineyards in the Sierra foothills, and Continental Divide Winery based in Summit County, CO. Our whole family spends time at all three wineries, and as much time as possible skiing each winter and hiking every summer in Colorado,” revealed Ana Maltzman. The wine business is a family affair, with Jeffrey serving as the lead winemaker, Ana assisting in crafting 14 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2017

the final blend formulas and overseeing marketing and label design and their daughters Alexis and Jessica helping with grape harvests. Jeffrey and Ana began their wine business venture after Jeffrey won a business plan challenge contest with a plan to launch a cruise ship-based floating winery. Although the plans changed to a land-based business, Jeffrey and Ana knew they had something special. “We have a history with wine…in a good way. Our first out-of-town trip together was to Napa, and we fell in love with the region. We got engaged in Napa and were married at a San Diego winery. We started making wine about five years ago, and in 2014, our business expanded when we obtained our own vineyard in the Sierra foothills,” explained Ana. Their Navigator’s Captain’s Private Reserve was named the best 2012 Cabernet in the world by Sunset Magazine, and their new winery in Colorado is the highest altitude winery in the world. The Maltzmans may be a multi-city family, but there is only one place they call home. “We love the family-friendly atmosphere of Carmel Valley and are proud of our neighborhood and our community,” said Ana, citing the close proximity to the beach and excellent schools as two of their favorite features of the area. She and Jeffrey are also the principle partners at Maltzman & Partners, a boutique law firm specializing in representing cruise lines, hotels, and travel-related companies. Alexis is a sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy, where she is on the Speech and ComedySportz teams. Jessica is an eighth grader at Pacific Trails Middle School, where she is a member of ASB Leadership. Both girls enjoy musical theater, and Jessica plays the guitar for an all-girl rock band. And despite their busy schedules, the family slows down each Sunday for a family breakfast, a cherished tradition. 

CCA STUDENT DONATES EYEGLASSES TO THE HOMELESS

G

lasses for All, a nonprofit organization that collects and recycles used eyeglasses, recently held its first distribution event at the Neil Good Day Center, donating over 200 pairs of prescription and reading glasses to people in need. It was then that Glasses for All Founder Amy Yan, a student at Canyon Crest Academy and 92130 resident, learned that many homeless people lose their glasses to thefts, assaults, or other unfortunate events. “Prior to the event, I wasn’t fully aware of just how high the demand for glasses among the homeless was,” said Amy. “I had a general idea that there was a demand, but I had previously assumed that glasses were auxiliary resources compared to the bare necessities of food, shelter, and clothing. After conversing with the homeless in line, I came to

understand that the necessity for glasses, for clear vision, was crucial as well.” One woman even cried tears of joy when she found a pair of glasses that fit her. Following the distribution event, Glasses for All pooled the remaining glasses and donated 40 pairs to the Episcopal Community Services’ Friend to Friend homeless outreach program. Amy conceptualized Glasses for All in April 2016 when she found some old glasses while cleaning her house. She didn’t want to throw them away or leave them sitting in a drawer, so she decided to start collecting them to donate to those in need. The organization depends on glasses donations from local churches, community members, and other organizations. Learn more about how you can help at www.glassesforall.org. 

eventeen-year-old Sammie Dorfan and her family have lived in Carmel Valley for the past six years. “We live in the Torrey Hills community, near Sage Canyon Park,” shared Sammie, whose favorite local hangouts include Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. “I enjoy the freedom that I feel living in Carmel Valley.” With the affection she feels for her community, it is no surprise that Sammie has a fierce passion to protect the environment and currently makes it her mission to do so. “I started the inaugural Eco Club at my high school and involve myself with the organization I Love A Clean San Diego as much as I am able to,” shared Sammie, who also makes an effort to live a sustainable life by being vegan and limiting trash output. Perhaps one of her most ambitious efforts is her current role on the youth advisory council for Keep America Beautiful. “It is a group of 10 high

schoolers throughout the nation who serve as ambassadors for the organization and for environmental service learning,” stated Sammie. As a member of the council, Sammie is responsible for leading service learning projects at her school and within her community. “Currently, I am leading a project called ‘Tree Trails Project,’ where myself and a group of other environmentally conscious students are working to plant some trees in a nearby canyon,” she explained. As if that weren’t enough, Sammie is also involved in her school’s student government. “I got involved during my freshman year and am planning to run for president next year,” she shared. In addition, she is a member of her school’s Israel Club and the International Immersion Program, which aims to create a welcoming environment for Chinese students. Sammie affirmed, “I enjoy learning about different cultures." Because Sammie finds a great deal of inspiration through reading and writing, it seemed a natural fit for her to join the school newspaper her freshman year. “I am now co-editor in chief,” she noted. Aside from her involvement in school clubs, Sammie plays tennis and remains focused on her studies. “My favorite subject is AP Biology,” explained Sammie. “I love exploring how we, as humans, have evolved into the complex beings that we are today and all the scientific processes that contributed.” As for her future, Sammie plans to attend college – perhaps UCLA – where she wants to major in biology and double minor in environmental science and journalism. “I also want to be a cardiovascular surgeon when I am an adult,” said Sammie. Already coming this far, there's no doubt Sammie will accomplish whatever she puts her mind to. 

LOCAL E NTRE PRE NEUR

MARKETING MAVERICK Local Entrepreneur Grayson Lafrenz Builds Business From the Ground Up by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

L

ifelong Carmel Valley resident Grayson Lafrenz may look familiar if you’ve ever perused San Diego Metropolitan, which recognized the entrepreneur for his marketing accomplishments in their 2015 “40 Under 40” feature. The San Diego Business Journal also named Grayson’s internet marketing agency the 2nd Fastest Growing Company in 2016, as well as a top-10 finalist for both the best place to work and healthiest company. And now, 92130 Magazine is pleased to turn our attention towards this remarkable local. Discussing his love for the Carmel Valley lifestyle, Grayson explained, “There is such a strong sense of community, and I’m lucky to be a part of it. There are also some great dog parks, which is nice because I have a brand new puppy named Enzo, who comes to the office with me every day.” Located in Old Town, Grayson’s agency – which he founded with his cousin, Nick, and college roommate, Robert – helps businesses and organizations throughout the world achieve their growth goals. Grayson elaborated, “Our major focus is helping our clients drive revenue through online marketing initiatives and campaigns. Our crew is passionate, savvy, and talented, and we take what we do very seriously. But we also know the importance of having fun every day!" Grayson's primary piece of advice for entrepreneurs just starting out is to get their product or service to the market as fast and efficiently as possible. "Prove people will pay for what you offer, get their feedback on what you are doing great and what you could do better, and use that to propel your road map," Grayson shared. It was after pursuing various business endeavors early on that Grayson learned just how vital it is to listen to the customer and avoid making decisions prematurely. When not hanging with his new puppy, or revitalizing the marketing industry, Grayson shares tricks of the trade with other business owners through his membership with the local chapter of the Entrepreneur’s Organization. Grayson also enjoys watching as many college basketball and Padres games as he can squeeze into his schedule. In addition, he's an avid gardener. This isn’t surprising, for Grayson has proven he can nurture growth, whether for his business or his backyard.  Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies:

Remembering Debbie

LOCAL RECALLS UNIQUE FRIENDSHIP WITH LATE STAR

C

armel Valley resident Louis McKay is spending time these days remembering the special relationship he had with the late Debbie Reynolds. Louis has been singing, dancing, and acting since he was six years old, and at age 20, he relocated to Los Angeles from San Diego to pursue a career in show business. He decided to audition for The Debbie Reynolds Show on a whim and was hired as a back-up dancer and singer. Over the following eight years, Louis and Debbie developed a deep friendship. Louis became Debbie’s lead choreographer for her traveling shows as well as her Las Vegas lounge act. They traveled throughout the United States and Europe together, and even to the Broadway stage with Annie Get Your Gun. Debbie called Louis her “second son” and he considered her a “second mother.” Even after Louis retired and moved back to San Diego to open his first dance studio, Debbie would occasionally ask him to travel to Las Vegas to choreograph some

pieces for her, and she would come to San Diego to visit Louis and his family. Now 62 years old, Louis continues to choreograph and teach at his dance studio, North County DanceArts, Inc. in Carmel Valley, never forgetting the impact Debbie had on the early years of his life. “I would not be the choreographer, the instructor, or the person I am today without her influence on my life,” he said. Louis last spoke to Debbie on Thanksgiving last year, planning a big family dinner for late January. Of course, no one could predict that their dinner would never happen; Debbie passed away on December 28, 2016. “She should be remembered for her elegance under all circumstances, good and bad,” Louis related. “She embodied a great work ethic, loved her family, friends, co-workers, and fans. She was a multi-talented lady – she was funny, she could sing, she could dance, she was an amazing actress.” 

INGREDIENTS ½ 13 / ¾ 13 / 1 1

cup egg whites cup almond milk cup rolled oats cup blueberries, divided teaspoon baking powder pinch xanthan gum nonstick cooking spray sweetener of your choice, to taste

Toppings peanut butter, optional (but highly suggested) maple syrup

DIRECTIONS 1.

3. 4.

5.

6. 7. 8.

Combine all ingredients in your blender or food processor. Include half of your 1/3 cup blueberries in the blender mixture, and put the rest aside for now. Blend ingredients until your mixture is the consistency of a thick batter. If your blender or food processor has a “batter” option, use that. Otherwise 30 seconds is probably sufficient. Spray your pan lightly and pour your batter into the pan. Sprinkle in a few of your remaining blueberries into the pancake batter, but be sure to save some for your second pancake. Cook on medium heat for approximately 3 minutes. Keep a close eye on your pancake, checking every few minutes for a golden brown bottom. With a spatula, flip when ready. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for your second pancake. Once ready, plate your delicious creation and marvel at your new breakfasting skills. Optional: top your pancakes with peanut butter (my favorite) or (the more traditional option) maple syrup.

ABOUT THE CHEF CHEF: Randi Cantrell PROFESSION: ZCode Media Associate Editor FAMILY: Husband – Collin; Cat – Kikka; Dog – Kiba HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Writing, strength training/fitness, reading, traveling FAVORITE LOCAL ACTIVITY: Hiking, training at Sweathaus ABOUT THE RECIPE: As a fitness enthusiast, I’m often looking for

healthier or macro-friendly alternatives to my favorite foods. I adapted this recipe from somewhere long ago, but have changed it so much over time that I now consider it my own. It’s easy to make and can be changed according to the season – skip the blueberries and add pumpkin puree instead, if that’s your jam. While they may not be like any pancake you’re used to, I think you’ll enjoy what they bring to the table. Perfect as a pre-workout breakfast! ABOUT THE CHEF: A San Diego native and word lover since birth, I think it’s pretty great that I get to spend my weekdays learning about the amazing residents of North County and spotlighting them in our ZCode’s community magazines. During the weekend, I spend my time writing, exploring new spots for coffee or food, and just generally trying to take in more sunshine. 

Celebrating in Step

NCL SAN DIEGUITO HOLDS ANNUAL WALTZ DINNER TO HONOR SENIORS

M

embers of the 2017 class of the National Charity League (NCL) San Dieguito Chapter, along with their parents and escorts, celebrated their Waltz Dinner in January. In preparation for their Senior Recognition, the girls (called Ticktockers) and their fathers and escorts enjoyed a waltz dancing lesson. Fathers made heartwarming toasts to their daughters and wives in recognition of their NCL journeys, and the evening concluded with the Ticktockers sharing letters they had written to their mothers aloud in front of the entire audience. “What poise and courage and confidence the girls demonstrated!” said Grade Level Advisor and senior parent Marie Morse. The Waltz Dinner is a special tradition for the NCL senior class and a prelude to the chapter’s combined event in the spring. Founded in 1925, NCL is the premier mother-daughter organization of women and their daughters in seventh through 12th grade. The six– Marie Morse, year core program grade level advisor includes community and parent service, leadership development, and cultural activities, empowering women to succeed as confident, well-rounded, and socially aware contributors to society. The program also serves to strengthen the mother-daughter relationship along the way. The organization has 63,000 members in 229 chapters in 26 states. NCL San Dieguito was established in 1998, starting many chapter traditions that still continue on today including the Fashion Show, Senior Presents, Mother-Daughter September Kick-Off Meeting, Ticktocker Day, Class Teas, and the Annual Chapter Awards and Tea. The chapter currently has 268 members and provides hands-on volunteer service for 24 philanthropic organizations in the community. For more information visit www.nationalcharityleague.org. 

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOUTH AND FACIAL PROTECTION by TARKAN SIDAL, DDS, MD

I

t’s getting closer to that time of the year again – April is National Facial Protection Month. Leading organizations such as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), American Dental Association (ADA), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and the Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD) work together to create public awareness of the importance of wearing protective gear to guard your face and mouth while playing sports. With the change of seasons, Spring may bring positive sentiment to our daily lives, but it traditionally also brings us many patients suffering with head, face, and mouth injuries resulting from sports accidents. Many injuries can be easily prevented with the use of safety equipment like helmets, face guards, and mouth guards. The head and face are integrated anatomically in such a way that statistically, when injuries occur, sinuses will absorb a frontal impact similar to airbag technology or “crumple zones” in modern cars. This design protects the subject from a more serious brain injury but at the expense of the facial fractures. Wearing protective head and face gear will give you an extra level of absorption of the unwanted impact. A mouth guard will protect your upper and lower jaws from fracturing, and your teeth from getting knocked out. Mouth guards protect the teeth from being knocked out and fractured, and also prevent injuries to the bone, tissues enveloping them, and the jaw joints. Having a mouth guard constructed takes just one easy visit to your dentist’s office. After

a mold is made of your teeth’s impressions, your custom mouth guard will be ready for use at the following visit. A mouth guard not only protects teeth but also allows for normal speech and breathing. Also, protecting your eyes with impact-resistant goggles will protect two of your most important organs. There are numerous published studies that recognize the importance of injury patterns by age. In adults, with aging, healing from traumas changes somewhat but the pattern of injury generally doesn’t. There is an age group of patients with traumatic injuries that needs our special attention – kids. As children grow and participate in more independent activities, their cognition and judgment also grow, making them more prone to injuries from playground activities and other age-related sports. The most common childhood injuries are from playgrounds, bicycling, soccer, basketball, and football. It is important as parents and caregivers to create peace of mind by encouraging children and adults to enjoy sports while taking basic precautions to prevent unwanted injuries. Helmets, face guards, eye protection, and mouth guards in general are significantly cost efficient when compared to the medical costs of an injury; not to mention the psychological burden of injury, which can have lifelong effects lingering long after the metabolic healing. Helmet technology is another gift to modern man with its versatile design, and can also be part of the fun by adding your team logo. It is prudent to talk with your dentist about which activities you and your family are interested in, and ask about how to make sure your teeth and face can be protected. 

he Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary recently received the prestigious Thomas F. Carter Leadership Award, which recognizes extraordinary volunteer leaders and philanthropists that are dedicated to the patients and families at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The award was bestowed to the Rady family in 2015 and originally given to Thomas Carter himself in 2000 for his exceptional leadership. “Rady Children’s Auxiliary is proud and honored to receive the Thomas Carter Award,” said 92130 resident and Auxiliary President Mary Reynolds. “The Auxiliary’s mission is to advocate for, educate about, and fundraise for Rady Children’s Hospital. We have fulfilled that mission for 64 years, raising $70 million and touching every corner of the hospital. To be recognized for that achievement is extremely gratifying.” The Auxiliary was established in 1953 as a way to promote the welfare of Rady Children’s Hospital. The group has not strayed from its original statement of purpose since then. The organization now consists of 23 units that span throughout San Diego and Riverside counties. The Carmel Valley Unit was founded in 1994. In addition to supporting Rady Children’s programs and services, the Auxiliary has pledged to raise $2.5 million to establish the Auxiliary Endowment for Neuroscience at the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine. The endowment will help improve patient care by providing clinical genetics, DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, clinical trials, and cutting-edge research for children with neurological diseases and disorders. For more information or to contribute to the endowment fund visit www.radyfoundation.org/auxiliary. 

Del Mar Hills Screens Documentary Approximately 100 people attended the screening of the documentary Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age at Del Mar Hills Academy in December, followed by a group discussion. The film explores the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games, academics, and internet addiction. On Feb. 16, Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, critically acclaimed speaker and author of The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age, followed up with a free community discussion. “At Del Mar Hills, we truly believe that we are all in this together,” said Del Mar Hills PTA President Jeannie Thomas. “Families are just trying to do the best they can to navigate through these fairly new waters of raising kids in this digital age. If the knowledge we have access to can be made available to our amazing neighbors, everyone wins.” Learn more at www.screenagersmovie.com.

Ocean Air Wins at Science Olympiad

New SDUHSD Superintendent The San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) Board of Trustees has named Eric Dill as the new superintendent. Eric has been serving as interim superintendent of the district since July 2016, following the departure of the former superintendent, Rick Schmitt. After joining the district in 2001, Eric was promoted to associate superintendent of business services in 2010. He has also held the positions of executive director of business services and director of risk management. “We have been impressed with Mr. Dill’s leadership of the district since he assumed the responsibility of interim superintendent last summer and are pleased that he has agreed to fulfill this role permanently,” said SDUHSD Board President Amy Herman. “He is the right person to lead the district, continue our traditions of excellence, and build upon the student success for which our district is known.” Eric’s appointment as permanent superintendent became effective immediately upon approval by the board of trustees at their meeting in January.

Ocean Air School students placed seventh overall in the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad Competition in February, securing their place in the Southern California State Competition, to be held at the California Institute of Technology on April 8. The Science Olympiad is a middle school competition with 23 event categories, focusing on various life science, earth and space science, biochemistry, and engineering topics. There were 117 teams from 35 schools competing this year. Ocean Air students placed in 14 of the 23 categories, achieving top-10 results in nine events and a first place result in one event. Dr. Tran emphasized that his entire staff is “passionate about the field of dentistry and providing the best care. This includes but is not limited to: cleanings, exams, fillings, crowns, bridges, cosmetic dentistry such as veneers and whitening, implants, wisdom teeth extractions, dentures, and root canals. The main objective that Dr. Tran has set for his new dental office is to ensure that everyone who walks through the front door feels like family. “Our goal isn’t just to treat our patients’ oral health. We also want to get to know our patients and develop real relationships with them and their family,” clarified Dr. Tran. “Dentistry has always been a scary thought to patients, but it shouldn’t be that way. Our philosophy is simple; that is, to treat our patients with care, respect, and honesty. In fact, I most enjoy seeing my patients smile upon leaving our practice.” During his free time, Dr. Tran enjoys experiencing new cuisines and traveling the world with his fiancé. Outside and Unplugged Outpost Summer Camps Offers traditional day camp Experiences for local Campers photos provided by Outpost Summer Camps

T

he team at Outpost Summer Camps believes that, now more than ever, children should have the opportunity to be away from their electronic devices for extended periods of time. And, of course, there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make that a reality. Founded in 2001, the camp serves over 1,500 children every summer in a completely outdoor and screen-free environment. Their core mission is to provide group-centered, enriching, and traditional camp experiences for children and young adults. The Outpost experience has three “pillars” that parents have loved for more than 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), and an exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The camp’s three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique in today’s norm of week-long camp programs. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Cultivating friendships and making meaningful connections is one of the most rewarding and fun aspects of a camp experience, so Outpost strives to make this a priority for campers. Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates as a licensed, organized San Diego camp. The team at Outpost takes both the physical and emotional safety of campers seriously. The camp’s directors are trained in American Red Cross CPR and prior to the start of camp, the staff participates in comprehensive sessions on emergency procedures, crisis management, positive discipline, and child development. Ultimately, they strive to create a safe, nurturing, and effective environment for all campers. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. MOBILE TECH SUMMER CAMP A

fter Dr. Korey Sewell enrolled his son in an afterschool Lego technology program, he quickly realized a critical piece was missing – campers were consuming basic technology, rather than designing it or being empowered to create their own. Soon thereafter, Hands-On Technology Education’s Mobile Tech Summer Camp was born. “Our camp is the first of its kind to successfully design a cohesive Mobile Technology program with an emphasis on both the theoretical and practical applications of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering for rising third through sixth grade students,” Dr. Sewell explained as the Executive Director and Director of Curriculum Design for HOTE. Two-week sessions offered from June 26 to Aug. 4 in Carmel Valley, Serra Mesa, and La Jolla provide students with an exciting curriculum that challenges and inspires each camper tailored to their experience levels. In either the Introduction or the Intermediate Mobile Technology sessions, children create cool projects involving tablets, Android apps, coding with Arduino, electrical circuits, and video games. FUNdamental engagement is essential – and present every day with outdoor activities, Mobile Tech Olympics, Career Days with local engineers and programmers, and field trips to San Diego’s Fab Lab, San Diego’s MakerPlace, and more. Looking for the content provided in Mobile Tech Summer Camp without the two-week summer commitments? HOTE has got your needs covered every month! Sign up for HOTE workshops like “Robot Programming” at the City Heights Library or “Electronics for Kids” at the Standley Recreation Center. HOTE is committed to remaining San Diego’s County’s premier technology education source for rising third through sixth graders. Mobile Technology programs empower and inspire technology built by youth who are gaining access and confidence to compete in a high tech world before entering high school. And all with price points that make Mobile Tech camps and workshops the most affordable in San Diego County – learn more at www.hands-on-mobile.com. 

r. Randolph “Randy” Alexander, DDS MS and Dr. Drew Alexander, DMD MS, the father-son team behind OrthoAlexander, have combined their experience and knowledge to provide patients with a full range of orthodontic treatments and personalized care in a family-friendly environment. “Our practice is different in that we can offer two opinions in the same office – one from a doctor with over 40 years of experience, and one from a doctor with the latest training and education in the orthodontic specialty.” Dr. Randy arrived in San Diego from Italy in 1978 after serving in the Navy, and started his practice. He was an associate in one of the largest pediatric dental practices in San Diego for over 25 years and has extensive experience treating children ages four to 15. Dr. Randy was also one of the first providers of Invisalign in San Diego County and has treated a variety of orthodontic problems with the system. Dr. Drew recently completed his orthodontic residency at the prestigious UC San Francisco, where he participated in a program that encompassed all dental specialties that work together to address the patient’s needs. He also has comprehensive training in the utilization of temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs). Both doctors find it imperative to keep abreast of new industry technology. Dr. Grossfeld Serves the Community in Many Capacities by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

D

r. Grossfeld’s long-time connection to the San Diego medical community began with his pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship at UCSD. Since that time, Dr. Grossfeld has found his home here both professionally and personally. For the last 14 years, he and his family have enjoyed the peace and quiet of Carmel Valley, valuing the proximity to the beach and access to downtown while simultaneously “being able to live so closely and harmoniously with nature.” Today, Dr. Grossfeld serves as a pediatric cardiologist, taking care of children with congenital heart disease. His work takes him outside the office in a variety of capacities. He serves as the cardiology consultant for the US Olympic Volleyball Team and organizes a yearly medical mission to serve children in Cambodia. In addition to patient care, Dr. Grossfeld also directs a research lab “aimed at understanding the genetic basis of congenital heart disease that can be translated to helping patients,” he explained. In an effort to support this important research, the organization Little Hearts, Big Hope was started in 2009. “It started when I first met Dr. Randy Woods, who at the time was the chairman of the board for the UCSD Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center,” Dr. Grossfeld said. “I told him about my research and the concerns about the obtaining funding from the traditional sources. He graciously offered to do a fundraiser at his home and that’s how it started. We joined forces, formed a small organizing committee, and we are now planning our ninth annual event for May of this year.” Dr. Grossfeld emphasized the role of philanthropy in biomedical research given the challenges of funding: “In my case, it has been instrumental and allowed us to make advances that are literally helping to improve and even save children’s lives.” Outside of work, Dr. Grossfeld enjoys an active lifestyle. “I love playing a variety of sports, swimming in La Jolla cove, music, and travelling internationally. I love helping coach my son’s various sports teams, particularly Little League baseball,” he shared. Despite the nine orthopedic surgeries he has had to have as an adult, Dr. Grossfeld noted, “I can still play most of the sports I’ve always loved doing.”  64 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2017

Are You Thinking of Selling Your Home? by DAN CONWAY

I

f so, get it on the market now! You will be pleasantly surprised. San Diego’s inventory is at a historic low, and buyer interest is at a historic high! The market here in San Diego has clearly shifted again. Currently, it’s a seller’s market, which in simplest terms means a market in which more people want to buy than sell. In the sweet spot of pricing range, $850,000 to $1,400,00, there are less than 30 active homes for sale in Carmel Valley. Carmel Valley is in a better situation than most of San Diego because there are a few new home developments for sale. However, current homeowners are worried about selling since the inventory is extremely low and because of the tight market. In the Carmel Valley real estate market, sellers are getting multiple offers on their property listings and even some offers way above asking price. Even with mortgage rates creeping up a bit, bidding wars are happening and buyers are getting more aggressive.

Nevertheless, sellers in Carmel Valley are a little bit reluctant to put their homes on the market; they’re worried they won’t find anything comparable to what they have now and the prices they’re seeing are continually rising. We, Dan Conway & Associates, have seen a number of our sellers recently writing in listings that the sale of their property is contingent on them finding suitable housing to move into. In general, the cycle needs inventory to keep it moving along. Without it, a stalemate takes place. Dan Conway & Associates and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty are so very “now.” They are relevant, head and shoulders above current advertising standards, and dedicated to customer service. The team is located in the Piazza Carmel shopping center at 3860 Valley Centre Dr. Suite 409, San Diego 92130; stop by the office, which is next to Vons, for all your real estate needs. 

LITTLE ITALY Get a Taste of Italy Right Here in San Diego by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

N

estled along the waterfront in the northwest district of downtown, between the bustling San Diego International Airport and the historic Gaslamp Quarter, is a charming city section with a European flair. San Diego’s Little Italy was founded in the 1920s by Italian immigrant families, who built the area into a prominent fishing neighborhood during the height of the tuna industry on the West Coast. Despite suffering nearly 30 years of decline by the mid-'90s, Little Italy not only still exists today – it is a growing and thriving part of the San Diego cityscape. In fact, it has been recognized as one of the top Little Italy neighborhoods in the nation. And perhaps now more than ever, Little Italy is alive with community spirit. The streets of the 48-square-block neighborhood are studded with patio cafes, public piazzas, markets, authentic restaurants, boutiques, art displays, and other attractions that pay tribute to its rich Italian heritage. The area has been managed by the Little Italy Association of San Diego since 1996, an effort that has proven successful in preserving Little Italy as a stable ethnic business and residential community. This spring the association will complete the largest project of its kind: Piazza della Famiglia, a 10,000-square-foot European-style plaza intended to become the new

heart of Little Italy. The piazza will serve as a central community gathering place to host the area's various activities including farmers markets, concerts, cultural events, and more. So grab your family and friends, head down south, and explore all there is to do in this delightful cultural landmark. 
