t will come as no surprise – for people that know me and people that regularly read my letters – that I love our team here at ZCode Magazines. Find the hearts, I am lucky enough to work with a fantastic group WIN COOL STUFF! of driven and talented professionals that put See page 17 their hearts and souls into creating our local community magazines. Whether it’s editorial, graphics, production, or sales, every member of the ZCode Team has a direct influence on the pages of each and every magazine. For several years, I’ve had an idea swirling around in my head. It’s now time to put that idea into play. Starting with this issue, we have created a fun way to share that love and spirit put into each and every issue. We call it the Hidden Heart Campaign. Simply put, we want to give stuff away! But there’s a catch. We’ve hidden hearts in several advertisements throughout this issue. Your job is to flip through the pages and locate the specific advertisements that contain a ZCode Hidden Heart (see example on the right). Once you’ve found all of the hearts, simply email us your list specifying which advertisements contain the ZCode Hidden Hearts and you’ll Derrick Breaux instantly qualify for a chance to win some very cool Publisher stuff – from gift cards to t-shirts and more. We will announce winners regularly via email and social media. Thank you for reading 92130 Magazine. Be sure to tell all of our advertising partners that you saw them in the magazine. hen Keaton Chia prepared to propose to his girlfriend Evonne, he had chosen a few special places during their trip to Japan. Keaton explained, “The first one was at a temple. The legend goes that if you can walk from one special rock to another with your eyes closed, you will find your true love.” But when they arrived, a group of teenagers trying to do this thwarted his plans. He moved on to a wishing well, but it was closed when they arrived. His third choice, a place widely considered to be the most beautiful street in Asia, happened to be disappointingly ordinary during that season. The special moment finally took place at

Sanjusangendo, a temple well known among archery enthusiasts. Considering Keaton and Evonne’s relationship started through the sport, Keaton acknowledged, “There was no escaping archery!” Their first introduction happened at a beginner archery class that Keaton was instructing. He and Evonne quickly became friends, going on to compete together on the Cal Archery Team and even winning a bronze medal in the mixed team competition. “Not only is it fun to shoot an arrow,” he said, “but the people in the sport are great as well.” Today, archery still plays a prominent role in the Carmel Valley family's life. Keaton is the director of the Easton Archery Center of Excellence, and his parents and siblings all shoot. Evonne is not as active in the sport as she used to be before the birth of their daughter Adeline, but the sport will continue to be a family affair. Keaton and Evonne look forward to teaching their daughter how to shoot. While both Keaton and Evonne grew up in California, their parents immigrated to the U.S. “We love hearing about our roots and continuing the cultural traditions we grew up with,” shared Keaton. As a family, many of their traditions center around food. “I think cooking carries with it many of our family’s traditions and stories.” Life these days for the Chia family is also centered around all the recent changes. “We have been adjusting to a flurry of new things, from a new job position at the Easton Archery Center of Excellence, new baby, and now moving into our new home,” shared the couple. In the long-term, Evonne and Keaton look forward to making a positive difference in their community and sharing the sport they love with others. 

Earning Gold

LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

C

armel Valley residents and 2016 Torrey Pines High School graduates Samantha Griffith and Michelle Temby have earned Girl Scout Gold Awards for their outstanding leadership and commitment to taking action in their community. The Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; just five percent of Girl Scouts nationwide achieve this distinction. Samantha and Michelle are two of 32 Girl Scouts in San Diego who earned the award this year. Samantha, who has been practicing dance since she was four years old, wanted to share her passion with children living at Community HousingWorks facilities. For her Gold Award project, she choreographed and taught basic ballet and hip hop classes, and also arranged for the volunteer team to keep the lessons available at the facility in the future. Samantha is a member of Troop 1256 and will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall.

Michelle’s Gold Award project addressed the dangers of skin cancer. She educated elementary, middle, and high school students on the damaging effects of the sun and ways to protect skin. She has participated in medical missions to Fiji and Mexico in the past, and realized while working on her Gold Award project that she wants to become a dermatologist. Michelle is a member of Troop 1156 and has previously earned her Bronze Award, the highest honor available to Girl Scout Juniors, and Silver Award, the highest honor available to Cadettes. This is the centennial year of Girl Scouting’s highest award, which recognizes young women who create meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world. Girl Scouts San Diego provides activities for nearly 40,000 girl and adult members, with facilities in Balboa Park, Carlsbad, and Escondido. Learn more at www.sdgirlscouts.org. 

FORMER TPHS GRADUATE LEADS ALMA MATER AS PRINCIPAL

T

he San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) Board of Trustees and Superintendent Rick Schmitt have selected Rob Coppo to serve as the new principal of Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) for the upcoming school year. He will take over for David Jaffe, who was recently selected as superintendent for the Rancho Santa Fe School District. Rob has been in education for 18 years. Prior to being selected for the principal position, he was the assistant director of career technical education in the Grossmont Union High School District. He also previously served as an assistant principal at TPHS from 2008 to 2015 and is a TPHS graduate himself. Further past experience includes serving as a high school English and video production teacher, a WASC site coordinator, a soccer coach, and technology mentor. He was also selected as Teacher of the Year in the Escondido

Union High School District. “As much as I have enjoyed my current position, the opportunity to return to SDUHSD to lead my alma mater is too great to pass up. I feel honored to be chosen to lead a school that means so much to me and my family. I am looking forward to reuniting with the best staff I have ever worked with, as well as the incredible students and families that make Torrey Pines a very special place,” Rob said. “It is my hope, my goal, and my driving desire to positively impact students the way a TPHS teacher did for me when I was a student there. I have always been a Falcon, and I will always be a Falcon, and I can’t wait to be back.” SDUHSD serves students in Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, and surrounding areas. saiah Granet, the founder of the San Diego Chill nonprofit, is passionate about hockey and wants others to experience the same exhilaration he feels when he's out on the ice. “The mission of the San Diego Chill is to provide children with developmental and intellectual disabilities, such as autism and Down syndrome, the opportunity to learn to ice skate and play ice hockey as a part of a team,” explained Isaiah. For his work with the San Diego Chill, Isaiah was named a CNN Heroes Young Wonder. “It was an amazing honor to be recognized for founding the San Diego Chill. The most memorable part was when Anderson Cooper thanked me and the Chill for the work that we do,” Isaiah shared proudly. Although he admits that there were many challenges along the way, when he gets out on the ice every Saturday with the San Diego Chill and sees the players smile, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.

The San Diego Chill is run entirely on donations not only of money, but also of time. According to Isaiah, the program is a one-on-one system that provides individualized attention for each player. “This means that on average, we need 15 to 30 coaches each week,” stated Isaiah, who has the utmost admiration for his fellow coaches, as well as the players that come out to the rink. “I am constantly inspired by the players of the Chill who persevere through so many challenges to live an ordinary life,” related Isaiah. He encourages all those who are interested to visit www.sandiegochill.org to find out how to help make a difference in the lives of some very special children. Off the ice, Isaiah attends Pacific Ridge School where his favorite subject is history. He also enjoys studying the stock market and economic principles. “I love talking about the field of business with my parents and older brother. I want to go into sports business and would love to run other charities when I get older,” said Isaiah, who also hopes to play NCAA ice hockey. An avid fan of all Boston sports teams, Isaiah especially loves watching the Boston Bruins take the ice. He is also the proud owner of two chocolate labradoodles and can often be found running and playing with them at Sycamore Ridge School on the weekends. 

Sweet Dreams

LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS MAKEOVER TEEN’S ROOM

C

armel Valley Girl Scouts in Troop 1224 worked with Cecily’s Closet to makeover a room for Vesna, a bright, social 18-year-old girl who was born with Down syndrome. She lost her mom to cancer and needed a feminine touch to help her with the transition into adulthood. Lauren Goldman, Peyton Hall, Ashley Jabro, Moriah Seymann, Abigail Shah, Juliana Valenzuela, Kayla Wesseln, and Abigail’s sister Gaby Shah stepped in to help transform Vesna’s bedroom into a mature, calm space. The girls learned all about Vesna’s likes and dislikes, then worked together to clean and sort her belongings, design the new room, pick out decorations, and put everything together. They also made her a custom recipe book, a place to keep all of her track and field medals, and signs to remind her that she is loved. Vesna was overjoyed with the final outcome of the makeover and was grateful for the attention and love she received. The Girl Scouts wished to stay in touch with Vesna even after the makeover was complete, so they all helped her celebrate

her 18th birthday and several of the girls helped her get ready for her prom. “Our Girl Scout troop recognizes that there are so many kind people that we have as role models,” said troop leader Kelly Wesseln. “It’s nice that we can help others and become role models to others.” Cecily’s Closet is a nonprofit whose purpose is to spread stories of hope, love,

The organization recycles medical equipment, offers free belly bands for children with feeding tubes, and provides “Sweet Dream” room makeovers for children with special needs. Dr. Pfeffer will give CASH for your CANDY paying a dollar for each pound of candy surrendered and donate the proceeds to your child’s school! The surrendered candy will be donated to the military troops, Casa del Los Pobres, The San Diego Rescue Mission, Girl Scouts, and other local organizations. these skills through individualized techniques and programs. Many of TLC’s students do not have a diagnosis but their parents have been told “they just need to apply themselves” or that they “will grow out of it.” Maria knows that struggling throughout the school year is not the solution. “Most who come in our doors ask us, ‘Why didn’t anyone tell us about you?’ and after a few weeks those same parents are telling their friends because their child is doing new things and meeting new goals.” For families, TLC is a friendly and welcoming environment. Parent Shannon Downing shared, “My son loved going to TLC because it’s fun and he feels like the gifted and smart child he actually is. Overall, I’m no longer seeing his learning frustrations but the quick ways he grasps things.” Just one of many success stories, Maria affirmed, “Parents tell us that just walking in the door their child feels ‘normal’ – accepted, affirmed, and mentored by clinicians that really understand how smart they really are.” 

hen learning problems arise for children, parents turn to schools and specialists. Often, short-term solutions are offered without long-term outcomes. At the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC), the focus is on “a lifetime of success in learning and opening doors not only academically but socially in college, careers, and relationships,” owner Maria Bagby shared. “Learning problems don’t have to be permanent.” During her 30 years in education, Maria noticed, “Nobody in education was talking about solving the problem or fixing the deficits – only about accommodating so that the kids can keep moving through.” Children don’t wake up saying “I don’t want to learn today” or “I want to have a bad day.” Rather, Maria explained, “There is always a reason that children push back against some kind of learning. We identify that reason and fix the problem.”

At TLC, a specialized neurodevelopmental and cognitive training approach helps students tap into their greatest potential. “We are making an effort to give students those foundational skills that schools don’t have to directly teach but are necessary for independent success in the Common Core curriculum,” said Maria. These underlying skills include auditory and visual processing, working memory, and processing speed. Recently, TLC has begun offering additional services such as “boot camps,” using a cognitive training methodology to enable students to quickly build math fact automaticity, handwriting, and spelling – because schools just don’t have time for it all. Maria explained, “We have methods for teaching these so that students find success quickly and are able to work more efficiently in the Common Core curriculum.” TLC’s passionate and professional staff identify the child’s deficits and work to develop

A FRESH START Dr. Robert Ferdowsmakan Transforms the Lives of Children Affected by Physical Abnormalities by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

A

boy named Daniel experienced a traumatic dog attack that left his face scarred. Due to financial hardship, his family was unable to get him proper medical treatment. Fortunately, Daniel was referred to Fresh Start Surgical Gifts – a San Diego-based charity with the mission to provide no-cost surgical and health care services to children who have been affected by physical deformities. Today, Daniel is almost completely recovered thanks to free reconstructive surgeries provided by the volunteers at Fresh Start. Daniel’s story is just one of thousands. Since Fresh Start Surgical Gifts started 25 years ago, it has treated over 7,000 patients and has donated over $31,000,000 in surgical-related services. Dr. Robert Ferdowsmakan is proud to have begun volunteering with Fresh Start over six years ago. “I learned about Fresh Start from a friend and colleague who was a Fresh Start volunteer surgeon,” recalled Dr. Ferdowsmakan. “I have been a volunteer surgeon ever since.” Dr. Ferdowsmakan feels his biggest accomplishment as a volunteer surgeon for Fresh Start is having a part in transforming the lives of underprivileged children who otherwise may not have been able to receive the surgical care that they need. “The surgeries that Fresh Start provides are lifechanging for patients and entire families,” he noted. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Ferdowsmakan explained why he felt compelled to be a part of the charity organization: “Fresh Start allows me to give back to the community. I feel blessed to have had the opportunities to become a surgeon and I am in a position to help those less fortunate.” He added, “Fresh Start is an amazing organization with great people who all have a common goal to help the children.” Apart from his involvement with Fresh Start, Dr. Ferdowsmakan has volunteered for Thousand Smiles and Smiles of Tecate, both charity organizations that make medical trips to Mexico. Dr. Ferdowsmakan lives in Carmel Valley with his wife Noushin and their three-year-old daughter Alina. “We plan to raise our family in Carmel Valley,” said Dr. Ferdowsmakan. “I love everything Carmel Valley has to offer including the parks where my daughter can play, proximity to Del Mar beaches, great school system, and of course the wonderful people.” 

Makes: 10 to 12 serv ings Total Time: 2 to 3 day pr ep time; 3 ½ hour co ok time

Mix together the salt, pepper, fennel pollen, fennel seed, chili flakes, and cumin. Set aside. Prepare the pork belly by scoring the skin with a razor blade or sharp knife in a diamond pattern. Flip it over and sprinkle on half the spice mix and rub into the meat. Lay butterflied pork shoulder over meat side of pork belly. It should cover the surface area of the belly evenly. Sprinkle pork shoulder meat with the remaining spice mix and rub it in. Flip belly and shoulder over so the scored skin is facing up. Sprinkle this side lightly with baking powder and rub so it is even. Roll pork belly and shoulder from one end to the other to form a cylinder. With butcher twine, tie roulade from one end to the other in one-inch intervals. Place roulade in the refrigerator uncovered on a cooling rack over a cookie sheet for 1 to 2 days until the skin has dried out. The night before you roast, soak calypso beans in 4 quarts of water overnight. The day of, begin braising calypso beans: In a 4-quart pot, sweat your shallots in a little oil until they get some color. Add your soaked and drained beans to the pot, 2 quarts of your vegetable stock, and the bay leaf. Do not season at this point. Bring pot to a simmer. Try not to boil beans to keep skins intact. Simmer beans until tender on the inside, checking every 15 to 30 minutes. If liquid gets low, add more plain vegetable stock or water pot. Once the beans are tender and the liquid is just below the top of the beans, season them with salt and pepper to taste. Pour into a shallow metal pan to cool and set aside. For salsa verde, pick parsley leaves and roughly chop scallions (green and white) and place in a food processor with the garlic and capers and 1 cup of good olive oil. Process until everything is minced together. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. Two hours before roasting, pull the porchetta out of the refrigerator to sit at room temperature. Set your oven to 300 degrees F. The porchetta will roast for 2 ½ hours. After this time, turn the oven up to 500 degrees F and roast for another half an hour until the skin has crisped up. After roasting, carefully pull out of the oven and let it rest for 30 minutes before cutting. Cut the ties off the porchetta and discard them. With a serrated knife, cut the porchetta into 1-inch thick slices. Plate with the braised beans on the bottom, then some fresh spinach, and the porchetta on the spinach. The spinach will wilt slightly under the heat of the pork. Top with the salsa verde, extra-virgin olive oil, some good sea salt, and serve!

Chef: Rhoelle Gabriel Restaurant: Dolce Pane E Vino in Carmel Valley Family: Nemo the Dog Hobbies and Interests: Anything at home. I don’t get a lot of time at home being at the restaurant so much, so anything I can do at home and with my dog is relaxing and enjoyable for me. Favorite Local Activity: Eating at different restaurants all over San Diego and local brewery-hopping. I love discovering new places to eat and finding inspiration for new dishes. About the Recipe: Porchetta is a classic Italian dish. It’s simple in flavor, but delicious and impressive if you make it for a crowd or dinner party. Plus, the crunch you get on the skin is amazing. It is comfort food, especially served with the braised beans and great for the cooler weather we’re having. Leftovers are perfect sliced thinly for sandwiches the next day. About the Chef: I was born and raised in San Diego. I draw much of my culinary inspiration from the amazing selection of local produce and apply it to Dolce Pane E Vino’s Italian-Californian menu. After attending culinary school at the Art Institute in Mission Valley, I interned and eventually became Sous Chef at Dolce’s Rancho Santa Fe location. In 2013, I moved to Newport Coast to work at Andrea Ristorante, a high end Italian restaurant part of the Resort at Pelican Hill. This year I returned to San Diego to be the executive chef of Dolce’s second location at Pacific Highlands Ranch in Carmel Valley, which opened its doors in January 2016. 

COMMUNITY STUFF

2016 Touch A Truck

Local Wins Homemade Wine Competition

Max’s Ring of Fire recently hosted its annual Touch A Truck fundraiser at Canyon Crest Academy. Twenty-five hundred children, parents, and other community members attended and marveled at – and even sat in – over 70 vehicles, including a 1964 Shelby Cobra, the Mercy Air Ambulance, Wells Fargo stagecoach, and a large excavator. In addition to the wide array of vehicles, there was live entertainment, games, a lemonade stand, food trucks, and Zootopia goodies provided by Universal Studios. Max’s Ring of Fire is a pediatric cancer fundraising and advocacy organization that supports innovative neuroblastoma research and clinical trials. The foundation was started by Andy and Melissa Mikulak in honor of their late son Max, a pediatric cancer patient. Max’s Ring of Fire works with oncologists and researchers to find potentially live-saving treatments for children with neuroblastoma. This year’s Touch A Truck raised over $42,000 to fund these efforts through the Neuroblastoma and Medulloblastoma Translational Research Consortium. Learn more at www.touchatrucksd.com.

92130 resident Michael Perrone and friend Julio Troche won awards in the San Diego County Fair’s Homemade Wine Competition. The duo’s inaugural Syrah earned a gold medal in the red wine division while their Merlot-Syrah received a gold medal in the blended red wine division and best in class honors. “I grew up helping my dad and grandfather make wine. After my grandfather passed in 2011, I wanted to continue the tradition and try my hand at making wine,” shared Michael. “Because Julio shared my taste in wine, I recruited him and we started making wine in my garage three years ago.” Michael and Julio started an exclusive wine club and in 2014 they expanded their wine production to more than 600 bottles. When they are not making wine, Michael is the director of logistics for the U.S. Navy and Julio is the principal of Landscape Solutions Warehouse. The competition was open to all amateur winemakers 21 years and older. This year there were 313 entries in eight divisions. Discover more at www.sdfair.com.

Assistance League Donates to DMUSD The Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito (ALRSD) presented a $3,375 donation to the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD). The donation was presented to DMUSD to help fund scholarships for the 6th Grade Outdoor Education Camp Program. Vice President of Philanthropic Programs Pat Talmon presented the contribution on behalf of ALRSD to Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Service Shelley Peterson and Director of Student Services Cara Schukoske at DMUSD. ALRSD is an all-volunteer nonprofit whose philanthropic programs are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of children and adults affected by trauma, violence, and poverty in the Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas, and Carlsbad communities. The Assistance League’s Operation School Bell program provides science camp scholarships to children needing financial support to participate in sixth grade camp. To learn more visit www.alrsd.org.

Teen Chosen as Student Leader

Three years ago, students in Canyon Crest Academy’s Humanities and Envision Visual Arts Conservatories started a project called Spirit Skies. It is a four-part graphic novel series following the adventures of children located in four of the earth’s biomes, teaching them about the environment, culture, and history of their region through the eyes of a hummingbird. The team presented the project at the Comic Arts Conference, an academic conference within Comic-Con, this year. The students who presented include: Justine Kwon, Isabella Spadone, Adrienne Rozells, Diane Kang, Haley Chung, Emily Chau, Emma Halpern, and Sophia Bayat. They were accompanied by Conservatory Coordinators Timothy Stiven and Zac Brown. Spirit Skies aims to connect people of all ages to nature, no matter where they are in the world. Once completed, the project will be used as a learning tool in hospitals, schools, and other centers around the world. Torrey Pines High School senior Richard Ni is among five teenagers from across San Diego County selected by Bank of America as Student Leaders. The program offers young people, who are engaged community citizens, an opportunity to build their workforce and leadership skills through a paid summer internship at Community HousingWorks (CHW). The Student Leaders will assist in CHW’s new e-learning program, helping student residents improve their reading skills, and in enhancing CHW’s after-school program. Following the eight-week internships, the students will participate in a Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. “We are excited to partner with Bank of America in our eighth year participating in the Student Leaders program,” said Senior Vice President of CHW’s Achieve Programs Jorge Riquelme. “Each year, these exceptional high school students bring their passion and individual skills to CHW, helping us deepen our impact and helping them become strong leaders.” The other Student Leaders are Nicholas Rogozinski, Samantha Vu, Elena Hoffman, and Snigdha Nandipati. SDJA Athletic Department Fundraiser MD Today Urgent Care and the San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) are partnering together to benefit the school’s athletic department by providing sports physicals for students. The fundraiser will take place at the Carmel Valley clinic from Sept. 5 through 12. SDJA will charge $20 per physical, administered by experienced physicians. All proceeds will benefit the SDJA Athletic Department. “Any opportunity to support San Diego schools is valuable time spent at MD Today Urgent Care,” said Len Jurkowski, M.D. “We enjoy being a part of the Carmel Valley community, and pride ourselves on exceptional care for patients of all ages.” MD Today Urgent Care is dedicated to providing quality care to individuals, families, and businesses at their two clinic locations in Carmel Valley and Scripps Ranch. It is SDJA’s mission to further academic excellence, social responsibility, and active Jewish living for all of its students. For more information visit www.mdtoday.com and www.sdja.com.

Vision of Children in 25th Year The 92130-based Vision of Children Foundation (VOC) is celebrating 25 years of funding research to find cures for hereditary childhood blindness and other vision disorders, and improving the lives of visually impaired individuals and their families. VOC was founded in 1991 by San Diego residents Sam and Vivian Hardage after their son was born with a rare vision disorder. After discovering a lack of research efforts around the world, Vivian and Sam were determined to bring vision disorders to the scientific forefront – and they’ve accomplished just that. “It’s really amazing how far we’ve come,” said Sam. “Knowledge about genetic eye diseases has increased dramatically over the past two decades. Treatments and cures are well within our reach thanks to our pioneering research in these areas.” VOC remains committed to providing adequate research funding until these genetic diseases are completely eradicated. “It will be a happy day for us when we can say that we’ve given children the gift of sight,” Vivian said. Discover more at www.visionofchildren.org.

DMUSD Receives Generous Donation The Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMSEF) President Ty Humes and Vice President of Marketing Andrew Zack presented the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD) a check for $1,270,000. The money raised by DMSEF will provide the district with 14 certified STEAM+ teachers for the upcoming school year. The STEAM+ program is designed to provide robust and engaging opportunities for students to experience an interdisciplinary approach to learning. These dynamic learning environments require students to think critically, collaborate with each other, and explore solutions to realworld problems. STEAM+ prepares students to connect experiences from a variety of disciplines by fusing together things like science and engineering with technology and art. STEAM+ is made possible through donations from parents, community members, and corporations. DMUSD students will benefit from the generosity of donors like DMSEF who value the importance of this innovative program. For more information about DMSEF visit www.dmsef.org.

Baseball and Softball Batting Cage

North County’s Little Rookies and AllStar Baseball and Softball Academy has been bringing the baseball fundamentals to events around town with their new portable batting cage. The cage debuted at the Ocean Air Elementary School Carnival in April, with a follow-up showing at the Kids Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “What a hit!” said Coach Kurtis Swanberg, who runs the Little Rookies program and has been coaching for over 20 years. “The batting cage comes with a pitching machine, balls, bats, a screen for the pitcher, and more.” He also has an 80 by 50-foot soccer arena that comes with 12 soccer balls and drill cones – both sets of equipment set up in 10 minutes anywhere with enough space, and are available for local parties and special events.

Coastal Cleanup Day photo by Mayela Padilla

I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) will lead the 32 nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day as part of the International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The community is invited to participate locally by choosing from 108 sites where more than 8,000 San Diego-based volunteers will work alongside a half million volunteers worldwide. Although the name suggests that it is a beach cleanup, nearly 75 percent of the cleanup sites are actually located inland along rivers, creeks, canyons, and urban areas, where 80 percent of marine debris starts. While litter removal is a large focus of the event, volunteers will also participate in beautification projects such as graffiti removal and replacing invasive species with droughttolerant landscaping. ILACSD is San Diego’s most influential advocate for sustainability, awakening passion and inspiring action to create a lasting, positive impact on the local environment. For more information visit www.cleansd.org. Volunteers of all ages and ability levels are welcome to register for Cleanup Day at www.cleanupday.org. 92130 Parks Offer Recreation and Relaxation for the Whole Family photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

ne of the greatest advantages of living in San Diego is being able to spend time outdoors practically any time of the year – and you don’t have to go far from home to enjoy this perk! There are plenty of beautiful parks right here in Carmel Valley. From

activities like children’s egg hunts, family movie nights, and summer concerts to recreational classes and sports leagues for all ages, local parks serve as a place for community members to come together and enjoy the great outdoors. Carmel Valley Recreation Council Chair Marilee Pacelli and Ocean Air Recreation Council Chair Jason Hardy share with us how their organizations work to further enhance all that parks in 92130 have to offer, and how you can get involved by joining or learning more about the recreation councils.

Q&A

with Marilee Pacelli, CARMEL VALLEY RECREATION COUNCIL CHAIR

CAN YOU TELL US THE HISTORY OF THE CARMEL VALLEY RECREATION COUNCIL? In the early days, the CVRC was instrumental in ensuring that new parks met the needs of the community. This included getting restrooms added at Torrey Highlands, ensuring adequate parking was available at parks that shared space with elementary schools, and increasing the gymnasium size at the Carmel Valley Community Park. The council also found that Carmel Del Mar did not include the required acreage – leading to the creation of the three-acre Del Mar Trails Park – and worked to move the Carmel Creek park and school to a location away from the power lines (its original site). Since then, the CVRC has worked with the city to provide community input on park design, local activities and programs, and area youth and adult sports. WHAT IS THE CVRC’S CURRENT ROLE IN 92130? The CVRC is an advisory board that allows community participation and public outreach for issues related to the local city parks, working to promote recreation in the community through planning, administering, publicizing, and coordination with vendors and city staff. We work with the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department to manage parks and to provide programs, special events, enhanced services, facilities, equipment, and supplies for the benefit of the public. This includes providing programming for the local community in the form of classes and recreational sports leagues. Over the years, the rec council has also sponsored many activities such as movie nights, summer concerts, spring egg hunts, and more. We also work with the local youth and adult sports organizations and oversee the allocation of fields within the 92130 zip code.

WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE COUNCIL MEET? The Carmel Valley Rec Council meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month. The meetings are held at the Carmel Valley Rec Center starting at 7 p.m. and they are open to the public. The Ocean Air Recreation Council meets at the Ocean Air Community Park on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. WHAT KINDS OF PARK EVENTS DO YOU PUT ON THROUGHOUT THE YEAR? The council puts on several events throughout the year for the benefit of the community. Each year we put on a spring egg hunt for children ages 1 to 14. This has been an activity that the rec council has funded for the last 15 years. Up until this summer we have offered a summer concert series that included three to five free concerts during the summer. We have also offered Family Movie Nights during the summer for all families. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE OF PARKS IN 92130? The goal of the council is to continue to provide programming for young and old through the rec center and the parks. We are currently in the process of developing a committee to make recommendations for more senior programming. Carmel

Valley has a growing community of seniors, so providing them with programs to meet their needs is important for the wellbeing of our community. The council will continue to provide additional funds for supporting our programs by purchasing equipment and additional landscaping for the parks. WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT VISITING COMMUNITY PARKS, AND WHY ARE THEY AN IMPORTANT COMMUNITY STAPLE? Community parks provide open space for both organized and unorganized activities in indoor and outdoor environments that promote health and well-being for both young and old. I enjoy participating in these programs and using the parks for exercise for myself and my husband. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT OUR READERS MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE COUNCIL OR LOCAL PARKS? Our local parks and recreation centers are heavily used throughout the year by both youth and adult groups. The role of the recreation council is to help provide programming and offer events to the public that will help attract them to our parks. The rec council is always looking for new members – come join us at one of our meetings and learn what you can do for your community!

WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT VISITING COMMUNITY PARKS, AND WHY ARE THEY AN IMPORTANT COMMUNITY STAPLE?

Planning for the Park NEED SOME INSPIRATION ON HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR LOCAL PARKS THIS FALL? CHECK OUT OUR SUGGESTIONS FOR SOME OUTDOOR FUN. Let the Dogs Out: But make sure they stay leashed unless you’re

Rest and Relaxation:

at an off-leash park! Most dogs love exploring new territories beyond the neighborhood sidewalks. If you know your dogs are friendly, parks are a great place to introduce them to a variety of people. Remember to bring doggy bags and a water bowl.

Bring a blanket and a book and kick back – or skip the book and just take a nap. Either enjoy the sounds of birds chirping and children playing or take charge of your relaxation soundtrack by bringing along music and earbuds. Don’t forget the sunscreen if you think you might fall asleep at noon.

Outdoor Office: Did any of your teachers ever take the class outside on sunny days? Be your own favorite teacher and cast a new light on your work by heading to a nearby park to catch up on your paperwork or help your kid with homework. The fresh environment can boost both your productivity and your mental health. Party It Up: Local parks are great birthday venues no matter how old you’re turning. Some have gazebos or other facilities you can reserve for special events – see www.sandiegocounty.gov/parks and www.sandiego. gov/park-and-recreation to learn more. Remember to clean up after your event and leave the park pristine for the next day’s party guests. Picnic at the Park: Pack an easy meal with your friend, significant other, or family and head out to dine in the fresh air. Either bring a blanket to spread out on the grass or take advantage of available picnic tables – though you may want to spread a cloth over the outdoor table anyway. Keep food covered and make sure napkins don’t blow away.

Playground Playdate: Instead of inviting your kid’s friends over to your house, invite them out to the park and let them loose for some lightly supervised fun. Be sure to bring along snacks and sunscreen depending on when you head out. You can also take turns every week with the other parents so everyone gets an afternoon to themselves.

Sports and Games: Playing catch sounds simple, but first you have to decide what you’re catching – a baseball, football, Frisbee, lacrosse ball, soccer ball, or something else? If you or a family member is on a sports team, playing catch in the park is a great way to keep everyone’s skills sharp. You can also play games that don’t need equipment, like Hide and Seek, Red Light Green Light, and Red Rover. 

Pearl, a Torrey Pines High School senior, has become the president of the newly revived nonprofit organization The FULL Project, which works to alleviate food insecurity among San Diego youth during school breaks. “I recognize that I am privileged in that I can pursue my interests through a variety of programs and activities, like Pearl Park WIT, and I am extremely grateful for this fact,” she said. Involvement with WIT has also helped Pearl improve her social and professional skills, and allowed her to meet other like-minded people who motive and inspire her. Sammi moved to San Diego from South Africa in 2010, and now attends the San Diego Jewish Academy. Her personal enterprise is The Playhouse News, a newspaper written entirely Sammi Dorfin by kids for the

enjoyment of other kids. Through this project, Sammi hopes to inspire young people to write journalistically and read for leisure, as well as give them the opportunity to have their voices heard. “My favorite aspect of participating in WIT has been all the valuable conversations and discussions I’ve been able to have with other teens and with my facilitators,” said Sammi. “I have also enjoyed the countless opportunities with which I have been provided.” Safi is a junior at Canyon Crest Academy. As Muslims, Safi’s family has been the target of undeserved judgement and prejudice, igniting in a Safi a desire to make a positive change. Safi’s enterprise is called WhiteHat, a platform that educates Safi Jafri high school students through misunderstood and overlooked personal narratives. Safi finds and interviews well-known speakers, community members, and others with interesting stories to tell and learn from. “Every teen has something that sets them apart,” he said. “However, what makes us all similar is that we love what we do, and that is doing whatever it takes to make the world a better place.” 

More Than Words Andrea MacDonald’s Leadership With Words Alive Is Changing Lives Page by Page by LYDIA COBB | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

A

t an early age, Andrea MacDonald’s mother introduced her to the library. A love of reading was instilled and she graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in speech and hearing. She and her husband have lived in 92130 for 18 years, raising their children. Twins Jamie and Ian are sophomores at UCLA, and Sydney is a junior at Torrey Pines High School. Andrea shares the importance of literacy with her kids and beyond. “Being literate is more than just reading,” shared Andrea. “It is necessary to survive and prosper in our ever-evolving world.” Andrea is in two book clubs, and in one was introduced to Words Alive, a literacy organization founded in 1999. Words Alive serves more than 5,000 students monthly – preschoolers to elementary students, family literacy programs, and youth in juvenile court schools. As Andrea’s tenure on the board for Solana Beach Foundation for Learning was winding down, she turned the page to help with Words Alive and now serves on its board of directors. Because of her expertise planning former galas for Solana Highlands Elementary School, she’s at work on Words Alive’s annual gala, The Author’s Luncheon (Oct. 19), which this year will be hosting best-selling author Jodi Picoult. Her first time observing a book group with Words Alive volunteers was in a juvenile court school for at-risk teens. “These kids were saying that they had never read an entire book,” revealed Andrea, “and that they had no memories of being read to as a young child.” Andrea was hooked on her mission from then on. Andrea has always been a community leader. She was a Girl Scouts leader for nine years, and for the last decade the MacDonalds have participated in the Miracle League, which supports baseball for special-needs youth. During the season, Andrea spends every Saturday as an umpire. Together with her daughter Sydney, Andrea works with the National Charity League. She and Sydney are also launching their own nonprofit for specialneeds teens to enjoy the healing benefits of dance after school. “We hope to place an impact with people in the same way that Words Alive has been able to affect the children they advocate for,” added Andrea, a champion for change in the health and literacy of our community. 

dental implants Bruxism and

by Tarkan Sidal, DDS, MD

What is bruxism? Bruxism is a movement disorder of the jaws defined by teeth grinding and clenching during sleep or while awake. Bruxism is considered a factor in causing temporomandibular disorders, excessive tooth and restoration wear, and failure of dental restorations, creating excessive pressure on native teeth, dental restorations, and dental implants – resulting in bone loss around the implants or even their failure.

Why are your dental implants at risk? As expected, excessive bruxism significantly affects the longevity and function of dental implants. The implant complex is composed of multitudes of structures: bone tissue, implant, abutment, various screws, etc., and all these structures are typically under the forces of mastication (chewing). An implant’s lack of compressible structure highlights the risks of heavily bruxing patients. Dental implants do not behave like natural teeth. Due to their design and positioning to the bone, native teeth absorb forces similar to a suspension. Natural teeth in the back of the jaw also have more roots, enabling them to withstand heavy chewing. Dental implants do not have multiple roots, and this has to be compensated by increasing the diameter and the length of the implant. In addition, the human jaw is designed like a Class III lever, with the force of biting on the front teeth, far from the fulcrum and thus protecting it. When there is bite irregularity in the back of the jaws, along with bruxing and clenching, the jaw acts like a Class II lever where the load is closer to the fulcrum, transmitting more force to the joint. In simpler terms, picture a nutcracker device: the joint is the fulcrum of the device and if you move the food item to the back, it is easier to crush it with smaller force.

In addition to their multi-rooted structure, natural teeth in the back position have larger crowns to withstand the forces of chewing. A dental implant crown is kept smaller than a natural tooth to minimize the forces of chewing transmitted directly to the bone since there is no suspension present. Another clever design with natural teeth is proprioception, meaning that a natural tooth is an organ connected to one’s body through the jaw, possessing a feedback mechanism to the brain, which can adjust bite force without conscious thinking. With dental implants, this ability is limited due to a lack of periodontal ligament, making the implants compatible with normal chewing forces but vulnerable to heavy abnormal forces like bruxism. Dental implant dentistry is a state-of-the-art technology that has proven itself since the time of its advent and it is here to stay. In a sense it is similar to but much easier than hip and knee replacements – they both help us overcome the wear and tear of our bodies. Now that more people are choosing dental implant dentistry – a hybrid dentition of natural and implanted teeth functioning together – as an answer for tooth loss, it highlights the importance of bruxism and its effects.

How can you protect your dental implants and preserve a healthy smile? A prescription orthotic bite splint can ensure that your dental implant complex functions properly with the rest of your native teeth. The splint enables the distribution of the excessive force over the entire dental arch rather than focusing the force to a specific area. Need for an orthotic bite splint can be determined after the patient’s bite analysis, traditionally observed by the family dentist or a dentist who specializes in that particular area. 

A CENTENNIAL

CELEBRATION Be Part of the Pride by Celebrating the San Diego Zoo's 100th Year by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

aterfalls cascading over rocks into pools below, the sun peeking through thick foliage, faint sounds of birds chirping and monkeys laughing in the distance... It's easy to forget for a moment that you're not actually strolling through the jungle! And that is the beauty of the worldfamous San Diego Zoo: it connects people closely with animals in the most natural way possible. The San Diego Zoo, operated by San Diego Zoo Global, has been a pioneer in the zoological sphere since its inception in 1916, from being among the first in the world to build innovative open-air grotto exhibits to making key contributions to medical research, natural science, and wildlife conservation. This year the zoo celebrates its centennial anniversary – 100 years of trials and triumphs, fun memories, and, of course, lots of fascinating animals! With over 3,500 rare and endangered animals, more than 650 species and subspecies, and over 700,000 exotic plants living on the 100-acre property, the zoo is dedicated to preserving wildlife as one of the world's leading global conservation organizations. Some have even referred to the zoo as a living outdoor classroom, educating children and adults alike about the natural world. So for the remainder of the year, join us in celebrating the extraordinary people and animals who have made this beloved San Diego icon what it is today.

Housing Market, Still Booming! by DAN CONWAY

T

he housing market boom in San Diego County is good news for home sellers but not so much for first-time home buyers and renters. In recent years, the U.S. housing market has recovered from the financial crisis but the supply is so limited in San Diego, prices are skyrocketing. If you already own a home, good news for you since it will be worth more. But if you’re a first-time buyer, it has become even harder to afford a home in San Diego. When houses go on the market, many times they’re sold within days of

going on the MLS, and a lot of times they don’t even make it to the MLS. Sellers are in the driver’s seat, as buyers contend with fierce competition and very fast-moving markets. Demand is sky-high and the number of homes sold is rising, even as inventory of homes for sale keeps falling. Since people are having a more difficult time purchasing homes, they are forced to rent, which drives up rent prices around the county. In some cases, renting can be the same price or even more than a mortgage. “While affordability keeps some people out of the housing market, tight inventory is keeping others out. About 24 percent of San Diego County renters, who have strong credit scores and high incomes, can afford to buy a home but aren’t jumping into the market because of intense competition among qualified buyers for fewer and fewer properties,” says a recent study from real estate website Zillow. Dan Conway & Associates and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty are so very

TREATMENT REALLY NECESSARY?”

ASK THE PLUMBER!

Brockmire Plumbing Services Inc., DBA BPS Plumbing and Drains has been bringing expertise and quality services to San Diego County for over 20 years. BPS Founder and Owner Eric Brockmire began plumbing in 1987. A few years later he knew he wanted to start his own business that would provide better service than the industry standard, and BPS was born. Eric wanted to know why so many plumbing fixtures kept breaking, so he got to the root of the problem. “I realized that the quality of the water had a major effect on the plumbing systems and the appliances,” Eric said. “So I started learning about water...and BPS came up with solutions.” BPS is unique from other plumbing companies in that it directly addresses this issue by offering water quality solutions. “We have access to the best equipment in the industry that will provide you with many years of great tasting and high quality water that keeps your plumbing working great and you feeling healthy.” In addition to water treatment, BPS provides other comprehensive plumbing services, including drain clearing, water heater repair and replacement, leak detection and locating, and sewer inspection and

repair, just to name a few. Above all else, BPS is a leader in the industry because they focus on business integrity and bringing only the highest levels of knowledge and experience to their customers. They also genuinely care about finding solutions and providing options that fit within the customer’s budget. “We are an honest company,” said Eric. “Let us prove how professional we are and how much we really do care.” 

ROOFING EXPERTISE

TOP LINE ROOFING SERVES CUSTOMERS WITH INTEGRITY AND PROFESSIONALISM by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

hen it comes to repairing a roof or installing a brand-new one, homeowners that hire Top Line Roofing can feel confident they are receiving an honest estimate and professional, courteous service. “Top Line Roofing works with customers to discover their true needs, to educate them on the roofing issues they face, and to present them with options that work best for their budget and their needs,” stated Wayne Sorenson, owner of Top Line Roofing. He’s proud to report that much of his business comes from the referrals of satisfied customers. Currently celebrating 25 years of business, Top Line Roofing is dedicated to serving the community’s long-term needs. When Wayne first opened the business, his primary focus was on roof repairs. Since that time, Top Line has expanded into the re-roofing realm, applying lessons learned from the repair side of the business. “Fifty percent of Top Line’s work involves repairs that correct the mistakes of other roofers. We have learned how to install roofs correctly the first time and avoid these mistakes,” said Wayne. Top Line provides free estimates, and Wayne encourages homeowners to have their roofs evaluated every 18 to 24 months to prevent minor issues from becoming major problems. Another way Top Line sets itself apart

from the competition is through its use of the latest technology. Wayne’s truck is equipped with a computer and printer, and in most cases a typed estimate can be provided onsite. “We also use satellite technology to aid in measuring the size, area, and pitch of a roof,” explained Wayne. According to Wayne, Top Line has earned a reputation for being quick, clean, and professional. “Our employees have spent years in the roofing industry, are well-trained in all types of roofing, and are able to analyze and assess the needs of our clients. We also continue to educate our roofing professionals on the newest materials and techniques, as well as safety procedures,” said Wayne. Employees train and review every week, he explained. “We review current jobs and discuss concerns, what happened, and how things can be improved, so all our crews are in unison and we can provide the same service throughout all of our jobs.” Top Line Roofing’s safety training and equipment surpasses OSHA requirements. Top Line is also a member of the San Diego Roofing Contractors Association (SDRCA), and over the years, Wayne has served as president, treasurer, and chairman of the Roof Education committee and the Build-a-Roof committee, the charitable arm of the organization. 
