A
little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 14 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey.

cott and Alisa Sacker have lived in Carmel Valley for so long that the area was not even developed when they arrived. “We bought our home in Torrey Hills when everything was just dirt back in 1998. It has grown into a really amazing community,” Scott said. “We are still in the same house, having raised two kids and three Labradors. We’ve remodeled our house over the past 10 years, doing a large part of the work and decorating ourselves.” They enjoy Carmel Valley because it is family-oriented, dog friendly, and has lots of close restaurants and entertainment. They have two children, Jessica and Michael. Jessica, age 19, is currently a sophomore at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, OR, studying elementary education. Michael, age 17, is a junior at Canyon Crest Academy and is a varsity pole vaulter. He also works at Burger Lounge in the Flower Hill mall. The Sackers own Team Tongue Tie, which specializes in laser tongue tie releases for babies, children, and adults. They also help new mothers breastfeed better. Scott is the COO, office manager, and IT expert. Alisa is a pediatrician of over 20 years. Her sister, Rosanne Berger, is a dentist, making it a true family business. Also on staff is the team’s lactation consultant, Rachel Beaubier. “We are very passionate about spreading the word about tongue and lip ties,” they shared. “We are trying to get mothers and babies to breastfeed better and longer. Breastfeeding should not be a struggle.” Alisa attended medical school at Wayne State University in Michigan. She began her pediatric residency at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles and later transferred to San Diego with Scott, where she practiced for more than 20 years. While Scott was attending UCLA for computer science and linguistics, the two accidentally met in West Los Angeles in 1994 while living in the same condominium complex. Scott proposed marriage after dating for only three weeks, and they have been married for over 22 years! “Scott planned and executed an amazing surprise renewal of vows for our 10- and 20-year anniversaries,” Alisa smiled. They began vacationing in Kauai on their honeymoon in 1996 and have gone back almost every year since as a family. When not working, Alisa can be found running, hiking, and going to Orange Theory Fitness in Carmel Valley. Scott “lives to ride” his Harley Davidson Road Glide Special. He also speaks fluent Mandarin. Together they enjoy wine tasting, eating out as a family, watching movies, and spending time with their dogs, Caleb and Mocha.

TPHS SENIOR RAISES MORE THAN $44,000 FOR LLS
T
orrey Pines High School (TPHS) senior Sophia LeRose was named The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Student of the Year at the Grand Finale in late February, after raising $44,450 for the organization. Sophia was inspired to get involved with LLS after watching her grandfather lose his fight to leukemia less than 12 hours after his diagnosis in September last year. “A week after my grandfather passed away, Hadley Weiss came to TPHS to present the idea to ASB about a student fundraising money for LLS,” she shared. “I knew I was destined to jump on the opportunity, so I did, and ended up being selected to represent one of 14 teams around San Diego to partake in the Student of the Year campaign.” Throughout the seven-week campaign, Sophia leveraged her personal networks, obtained corporate matches and sponsorships, held three restaurant fundraisers, and organized two major events,
far surpassing her goal of raising $25,000. “Once they announced my name [as the winner], I definitely became emotional thinking about how proud my grandpa would’ve been of me and my team for raising so much money in just a short amount of time,” Sophia said. “I am so excited to see my fundraising efforts help find cures for blood cancers, and support patients and their families.” The San Diego/Hawaii chapter’s 14 teams raised a total of $248,267 for LLS this year. Sophia will take her motivation and success to Duke University in the fall, where she will attend school and play lacrosse. LLS is the largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding research, finding cures, and ensuring access to treatments for blood cancer patients. The Student of the Year campaign is an exciting leadership development and philanthropy program in which high school students participate in a fundraising competition to benefit LLS. THE IMPORTANCE OF MOUTH AND FACE PROTECTION by TARKAN SIDAL, DDS, MD
I
t’s that time of the year again – April is National Facial Protection Month. Leading organizations such as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), American Dental Association (ADA), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and the Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD) work together to create public awareness of the importance of wearing protective gear to guard your face and mouth while playing sports. With the change of seasons, spring may bring positive sentiment to our daily lives, but it traditionally brings us many patients suffering with head, face, and mouth injuries resulting from sports accidents. Many injuries can be easily prevented with the use of safety equipment like helmets, face guards, and mouth guards. The head and face are integrated anatomically in such a way that statistically, when injuries occur, sinuses will absorb a frontal impact similar to airbag technology or “crumple zones” in modern cars. This design protects the subject from a more serious brain injury but at the expense of the facial fractures. Wearing protective head and face gear will give you an extra level of absorption of the unwanted impact. Mouth guards protect the teeth from being knocked out and fractured, and also prevent injuries to the bone, tissues enveloping them, and the jaw joints. Having a mouth guard constructed takes just one easy visit to your dentist’s office. After a mold is made of your teeth’s
impressions, your custom mouth guard will be ready for use at the following visit. A mouth guard not only protects teeth but also allows for normal speech and breathing. Also, protecting your eyes with impactresistant goggles will protect two of your most important organs. There are numerous published studies that recognize the importance of injury patterns by age. In adults, with aging, healing from traumas changes somewhat but the pattern of injury generally doesn’t. There is an age group of patients with traumatic injuries that needs our special attention – kids. As children grow and participate in more independent activities, their cognition and judgment also grow, making them more prone to injuries from playground activities and other age-related sports. The most common childhood injuries are from playgrounds, bicycling, soccer, basketball, and football. It is important as parents and caregivers to create peace of mind by encouraging children and adults to enjoy sports while taking basic precautions to prevent unwanted injuries. Helmets, face guards, eye protection, and mouth guards in general are significantly cost-efficient when compared to the medical costs of an injury; not to mention the psychological burden of injury, which can have lifelong effects lingering long after the metabolic healing. Helmet technology is another gift to modern man with its versatile design, and can also be part of the fun by adding your team logo. It is prudent to talk with your dentist about which activities you and your family are interested in, and ask about how to make sure your teeth and face can be protected.

COMMUNITY STUFF
2018 Woman of the Year Scripps Ranch resident Cheryl Shaw was recently named the 77th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year for her volunteer work supporting disaster relief and public safety. “Cheryl Shaw is a committed volunteer and resolute leader,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Her wholehearted support for victims of the 2003 Cedar Fire and 2007 Witch Creek Fire contributed so much to the community.” Cheryl has been chair of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association Neighborhood Watch since 2010. Since then, the group has grown to the largest neighborhood watch group in the county. She organizes an annual Night Out every August to strengthen ties between neighbors and law enforcement, fire safety, and local government offices. She and her husband, Mike, have two children and five grandchildren who are all local. The Woman of the Year program began in 1987 as a State of California effort to celebrate extraordinary women and commemorate Women’s History Month.
PTMS Student Wins Spelling Bee Kevin Luo, an eighth grader at Pacific Trails Middle School (PTMS), won the 49th Annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee in March. Kevin competed against 92 other spellers in the first round, with more than half being eliminated in the first and second rounds. Just three students made it to the final round, with Kevin correctly spelling “gradine” to win the competition. He will go on to represent San Diego County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, MD in May, receiving guidance from last year’s Countywide Spelling Bee winner and former PTMS student Yash Hande. Local Nonprofit Receives Grant
Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and executive director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 crossborder donations in the past year. Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Metropolitan Transit System, said, “This is a great example of agencies coming together to find solutions that are good for the planet.” For more information visit www.sustainablesurplus.org.
The League of Amazing Programmers, a Carmel Valley-based nonprofit, recently received a $61,191 grant from The San Diego Foundation, as one of 10 programs that strengthen the city’s innovation economy by creating more opportunities for students in underserved communities pursuing STEM careers. The grant will support the League’s Tech Workforce Program, which provides workforce experience days, classes, and career events to middle and high school students, as well as establishing an internship pipeline for high school students to enter the workforce. “We are beyond delighted for The San Diego Foundation to recognize our nonprofit,” said Becky Deller, the League’s Director of Community Engagement. “These programs are life-changing for some of these students.” Other grant recipients included the Elementary Institute of Science, Ocean Discovery Institute, The Maritime Alliance Foundation, San Diego Mesa College, and California State University San Marcos Foundation, among others, totaling $632,934 in grants. more than 15 summers: door-todoor transportation, “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, ageappropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The camp’s three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique in today’s norm of weeklong programs. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Cultivating friendships and making meaningful connections is one of the most rewarding and fun aspects of a camp experience, so Outpost strives to make this a priority for campers. Another way the camps stand out is with their continuous
commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under San Diego County permit as an organized camp. The team at Outpost takes both the physical and emotional safety of campers seriously. The camp’s staff is trained in American Red Cross CPR and prior to the start of camp, they participate in comprehensive sessions on emergency procedures, crisis management, positive discipline, and child development. Ultimately, they strive to create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all campers. Stuart and his wife Kelly, a clinical psychologist, run the camp as their family business, bringing years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Training is led by the SD Force FC technical directors of coaching – Jose Ocampo (Director); Adrian Ocampo (Assistant Director – Girls); Paul Currie (Assistant Director – Boys); and the rest of the coaching staff. The technical coaching staff has a combined 70-plus years of coaching experience varying from youth competitive soccer all the way to the semi-professional soccer levels. In youth soccer, the technical directors, along with their coaching staff, bring several years of experience and success in high-level soccer leagues such as Elite Clubs National League (ECNL); Academy; and several Cal South State Championships. The brand of soccer all of the coaches teach is a “Tiki Taka” style of play coupled with promoting individual creativity with the ball at the player’s feet. This same method is applied to all youth teams during the camps. These camps provide players a fun environment where they can learn, discover new techniques that improve confidence, champion the acquired skills, and work as a team. These skills will give each player the opportunity for success at any level of soccer and give them the added benefit of building lifelong friendships. Camps will begin in April 2018! ROBOT CITY
I
f your child loves to build robots, Robot City is the place to be this summer! Students learn hands-on with multiple robots, including some to keep for further experimentation at home. Robot City’s exciting curriculum is focused on bolstering students’ foundation for future success in growing STEM fields. Aspiring roboticists will learn fundamentals of robotics and related technology such as circuitry, sensors, gears, the science of electricity, physics concepts, and tactile skills such as connecting wires. This allows infinite possibilities for your child to bring together STEM concepts in a way only they can dream and design. There are six robot building and robot coding camp options for grades K-2 and 2-6. Students can build dozens of different robots (some to keep!) including MagnetBot, RoboSpider, Gyrobot and Ozobot, as well as advanced robotic drones and the Arduino-based mBot and Edison. Tuition is $255 until April 22 with code ZCODE18 (regularly $270). DENTISTRY PROFILE
Little Star Pediatric Dentistry W
hile their recently completed state-of-the-art office is new to the community of Carmel Valley, Little Star Pediatric Dentistry is by no means new to treating their young patients with a specialized, focused approach. The practice, which specializes in infants, toddlers, and children, originally had a small office in Solana Beach, exclusively treating patients struggling with lip and tongue restrictions. After transitioning to a new office in 92130, they are now empowered to provide comprehensive pediatric dental care. “My practice philosophy is to provide the same care for my patients that I would want my own children to receive,” said Dr. Najmeh Hannanvash. “To me, anything less than that is unacceptable. I believe in patient and parent education.” With a deep understanding that every child is unique, the practice tailors their treatments to the individual needs of their patients. Dr. Hannanvash and her team strive to stand out among other pediatric dental offices, not only by possessing knowledge, experience, and comfort in treating patients with all types of abilities and needs, but also providing guidance to help patients establish healthy habits for life. The skilled team maintains that being knowledgeable is a cornerstone for healthy development. After all, dental decay is entirely preventable with proper knowledge and care. “Our staff prides themselves on communicating our years of knowledge to parents and children,” Dr. Hannanvash explained. In addition to providing patients and parents with lifelong knowledge about how to maintain healthy oral hygiene habits, Little Star Pediatric Dentistry provides a wide range of comprehensive dental care. These include oral wellness examinations, cleanings, digital radiography, nutritional counseling, behavior management, the full spectrum of dental treatment, nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, treatment of lip and tongue ties (frenectomies), and other soft tissue laser treatments. 58 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM • April | May 2018

There is no greater match for the Little Star team when it comes to friendly, compassionate care for young patients and their families – except perhaps their own office building, which is equipped with the most up-to-date materials and advanced digital technology. With the help of their state-ofthe-art equipment, Little Star personnel are able to implement materials and techniques that are scientifically substantiated while maintaining the highest standards of practice set forth by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. While the office is known for these stand out high-tech features, it also is entirely kid-friendly, bright, vibrant, and full of toys and video games to help children feel more at ease during their visit. Each room even has a television screen – and the patient can choose their own movie to watch! Dr. Hannanvash affirmed, “We want to innovate the dental experience. We want each experience to be a positive and encouraging one, setting the tone for a lifetime of dental comfort and care.”

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H
A Look at 92130’s Real Estate Numbers by JESSICA BREAUX
T
he figures are in for February, and the numbers remain stable for home sales in 92130. A quick comparison to the same time period last year shows some minor fluctuation, so let’s take a quick look at some of the takeaways. A total of 53 new single-family home listings hit the market in February, compared to 58 new listings in February 2017 (a decrease of 8.6%). With fewer listings hitting the market so far this year, 92130 experienced a small tightening of available inventory. The total number of single-family homes for sale was down 20% with 62 homes available for purchase in February (versus 78 during the same period last year). We will have to wait and see if this tightening of inventory will have an impact on the overall pricing trend. The average number of days that homes were on the market during February was 42 days (compared to 34 days
in February 2017). The 23% slower selling time is consistent with what appears to be a flattening of home values. Although we have not seen the values increase in recent months, 92130 home values continue to be hovering around an all-time high. The median year to date (YTD) sales price of a 92130 single-family home through February was $1,220,000 (a decrease of 5% compared to last year’s $1,295,000 YTD median price). Home values have been relatively stable in 92130 for the last six months. If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals.
