omewhere along the way, I got the reputation in my family as being somewhat of a bah humbug during the holidays. My wife and children are quick to point out my lack of interest in holiday decorating and gift wrapping. But the reality is that I absolutely love the holidays – especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. And even though I may act like hunting for that perfect tree does not interest me, it’s just an act (but I think my family may be on to me since I really love everything about it). So, I’ll have to continue complaining a little in order to keep up the façade. The fact is that I love the tradition that the holidays bring. I love the buildup, the preparation, and the anticipation of the upcoming holidays. Life can bring a lot of changes, but one thing that has been important to my wife and me is continuing the family tradition. And having everyone together warms our hearts. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any of the other holidays that we celebrate, everyone in the family knows where we are going to be and who will be there. They look forward to it, and they expect it. As crazy as it sounds, we know what food will be served and who will prepare each dish (for each holiday). It works this Derrick Breaux way. It’s our family tradition. And although Southern Publisher California winter holidays may entail swimsuits and sunscreen instead of bulky coats, I wouldn’t change a thing – nor would they. So, if you hear me whining about decorating the Christmas tree or hanging lights around the house, just know that it’s all part of an act (sort of my own unconventional tradition). But let’s be sure to keep this as our little secret. I don’t want my wife and kids to know that I’m really a softy when it comes to the holidays. If they knew the truth, I’d have to do a lot more decorating and wear one of those silly holiday hats (sorry, that’s not gonna happen!).

igh school senior Jordi Bertrán is a true renaissance man. Jordi, age 16, is currently a senior at Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad. His interests and talents are varied. He is an athlete, an actor, and an engineer. During his sophomore year, Jordi had the opportunity to study for a semester abroad in the Bahamas at the Island School, a transformative program for high school students that focuses on experiential learning and sustainable engineering, all the while honing critical thinking skills and community building. “Every day varied in its content, yet each was equally exhausting,” explained Jordi. Students were assigned to a research project – either engineering pyrolysis systems (systems that turn plastic waste into fuel) or studying the migration of bull sharks. It was here that Jordi learned about the biochar/biofertilizer project. “Biological charcoal is highly porous, allowing for nutrients and micronutrients to cling onto it. Our charcoal was made with coconut husks that take several years to decompose,” Jordi said. This fascinated him, even after he returned home. “I knew I wanted to use biochar to mitigate the effects of the drought in Southern California. I began to use an invasive reed in the Torrey Pines area for my char and studied the water retention with different staple crops.” He hopes to continue work on this project after his college applications have been submitted. In addition to engineering, Jordi loves the arts. He does

filmmaking, recently branching out into documentaries. He is also a professional actor and has performed at the Old Globe Theatre four times. While he loves performing Shakespeare, he also enjoys musicals. When not doing engineering work or acting, Jordi can be found playing sports. He plays water polo in the fall and runs hurdles in the spring. Additionally, he is involved with the gardening and sustainability club at school, where they have built hydroponic and aquaponics systems, as well as rebooted the old garden.

The future is wide open for Jordi. “I have always found science exhilarating. Some part of me wants to go into environmental science or marine biology, as well as the development of sustainable practices. Another part of me wants to be an actor and make films,” he related. Regardless of what path he chooses, he will meet the challenge head on. “I am very adventurous. Anything that makes my heart pump faster and my adrenaline rush is perfect. I love pushing myself to the limit; it’s when my body is sore and seeped of energy that I feel alive.” This multitalented risk taker has great things in his future! 

he Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito’s (BGCSD) Polster Clubhouse in Carmel Valley recently debuted a new Teen Center, made possible by a generous donation from Del Mar Highlands Town Center. The teenonly space serves over 40 registered seventh and eighth graders from Carmel Valley and Pacific Trails Middle Schools, and features new furniture, computer workstations, a

armel Valley’s Angela Bushman started her career as a CPA, but she considers her most important job – the one that has truly created the person Angela has become in business and as a human – being a stay-at-home mother to three children. “Through my ‘motherhood career,’” she smiled, “I developed a better understanding of relationships, borders and boundaries, unconditional love, self-love, and, as any mother can attest to, the skill and handling of multiple creative projects at once!” Angela has been utilizing these career skills in spades, first creating a business as an intuitive empowerment coach, then branching out as an artist and writer. “Throughout our lives we find times that we look for personal growth, inspiration, and opportunities to learn from,” she affirmed. “I realized that we can be supported or inspired on this journey through many things.” To generate understanding, healing, and life appreciation, Angela teaches many modalities of inspiration with her intuitive empowerment clients. They might practice close reading of a book, examinations of color and movement by experiencing art in multiple ways, or maybe sitting down with a coach for deep subconscious exploration. She enjoys the creation and investigation of these modalities to support others through all their different senses. After her own life lessons kept reappearing in her empowerment sessions, she knew writing them down could help others connect with their own journeys. Angela’s first book, A Soul’s Journey Home, is her own story of personal growth and reflection, and has become a tool for others to relate to and use to face their own fears and doubts. Although she’s always had an appreciation for art, Angela never considered herself an artist until she started playing with abstract painting as an emotional release. While writing A Soul’s Journey, Angela used painting when words were too difficult to express or seemed limiting, and since then has progressed from smaller pieces in a watercolor medium to much larger canvases using acrylics. “My artwork is currently represented at the Michael Seewald Gallery at the Del Mar Plaza,” Angela confirmed. The “newest baby” in Angela’s creative arsenal is her jewelry line, the next artistic tool she can share with others. Angela Bushman’s love of her Carmel Valley surroundings shines through in everything she does: “I love exploring different groups and opportunities to be involved with the community here, as well as creatively offering my own.” 

wo Carmel Valley residents, Jerry Qu and Athena Tsu, who are seniors at The Bishop’s School, were among the 16,000 students named as 2019 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. More than 1.6 million juniors in over 22,000 high schools across the United States entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Jerry Qu Qualifying Test. Of the 50,000 highest scorers, approximately 16,000 were named semifinalists. Roughly 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level in February, competing for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships totaling $32 million that will be offered in the spring. Scholarship winners are chosen based on their academic abilities, skills, extracurricular accomplishments, and potential for success in college and beyond. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition Athena Hsu for recognition and scholarships conducted by the nonprofit National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). HIP REPLACEMENT GIVES PAMPLEMOUSSE CHEF MORE TIME IN THE KITCHEN

uilding one of San Diego’s most successful restaurants took a lot of hard work and skill but also took its toll on Pamplemousse Grille owner and executive chef Jeﬀrey Strauss. “Being on my feet 12 to 15 hours a day… it finally caught up with me,” Strauss said as he walked the same kitchen floor he’s walked the past 21 years. Last June, Strauss finally relented to the bone-on-bone pain in his leg and had hip replacement surgery at Palomar Medical Center Poway, the second busiest joint replacement hospital in California. As a celebrity chef, Strauss had his pick of hospitals and physicians but he chose the nationally recognized Orthopedic and Spine Center at Palomar Medical Center Poway and Dr. Brad Cohen. The hip replacement surgery lasted one hour and consisted of placing a metal rod inside the femur and connecting it to a ceramic ball and cup placed inside the hip capsule. Within two hours after surgery, the medical team at Palomar Medical Center Poway had Strauss up and walking. “After surgery, you are kind of loopy so I was shocked when they came into my room and said, ‘let’s go for a walk.’” Strauss said. Getting patients up and walking is part of Palomar Health’s pain management program that aims to reduce medications (especially opiates), speed recovery,

and reduce pain. In fact, the Orthopedic and Spine Center has one of the highest patient satisfaction scores in the nation for pain management. Strauss was out of the hospital the following day and back to work in less than three weeks. Within five months of surgery Strauss was catering one of the largest horse races in the world, the Breeder’s Cup, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, across the street from Pamplemousse, and walking 25 flights of stairs. He’s already preparing to have his other hip replaced sometime soon. 

VOC Foundation’s 10th World Symposium

The Vision of Children (VOC) Foundation, founded by Fairbanks Ranch residents Sam and Vivian Hardage, recently hosted its 10th World Symposium, bringing together scientists, doctors, and families from throughout the U.S., England, Germany, and Spain to present and discuss the latest vision research findings. The foundation has cultivated a reliable network of researchers from various institutions to invite each year, establishing an environment of trust and a spirit of problem solving in the hopes of finding a cure. Families directly impacted by genetic vision disorders were also given the unique opportunity to listen and learn from some of the most advanced minds in vision research, providing them with comfort, hope, and answers. The program also included dinner, entertainment by VOC’s own Vision Hero Joel Gomez, and presentation of the Vision of Children Leadership Award to Phil and Barbara Huffman. Theatre of Peace Combats Bullying Theatre of Peace (TOP), a division of the local nonprofit Act Like You Matter, Inc., is working to combat bullying by empowering young people to find their voice and change the way their generation treats each other. TOP is a troupe of 35 actors ages 11 to 19 who travel to schools in Southern California to run anti-bullying assemblies and workshops that help students build resilience and stand up for themselves and others. TOP Director Amy Jones Anichini and eight TOP members recently presented their Baffle Away Bullying! Interactive Stage Play for K-3rd – based on the book Baffle That Bully!, written by Amy and her daughter Chase – at the 15th Annual International Bullying Prevention Conference in San Diego. Since 2015, TOP has worked with over 5,000 students and more than 200 educators in seven school districts. Local Author Releases Newest Book Local author Kathy Cooperman recently penned a novel called The Very Principled Maggie Mayfield, a fun, witty story of friendship and romance that also looks at San Diego’s public education system. DMSEF Fundraises for STEAM+ The Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMSEF) is continuing to work towards its goal of raising $1.8 million by June 2019 in order to fund fully credentialed STEAM+ specialists to teach science, technology, engineering, art, music, and physical education in all eight elementary schools in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD). 10th Annual Mitchell Thorp 5K The San Diego community is invited to attend the 10th Annual Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Poinsettia Park in Carlsbad. The program was originally called Therapeutic Literacy Center, but has recently changed its name to better represent the breadth and scope of learning skills TLC focuses on. Located in Solana Beach, TLC’s clinicians provide cognitive therapies for children and adults along with a private school option with academic classes for students in 1st through 12th grades. “We provide individual educational services with specialized cognitive therapy meant to FIX or erase of all kinds of learning diﬃculties and identified disabilities. After a relatively short period of time at TLC, students transition back to their traditional schools as successful and independent learners,” said school principal Maria Bagby. Individual services are designed to FIX their learning problems, so that students can independently move forward on an even playing field without the need for accommodations and extra support. “These kids are smart, but struggling. They don’t need us to ‘teach to their strengths’ as we’ve all been told. They need us to strengthen their weaknesses so that learning comes easily in any environment,” Maria explained. Maria herself is a reading specialist and works closely with a network of professionals including educational psychologists, audiologists, MFTs,
