hard to flip through the pages of your 92131 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).

LOCAL ARTIST ILANIT SHALEV HAS A PASSION FOR GLASS ART by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Spark Photography
Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies: Favorite Local Spots:
Ilanit Shalev Full-time glass artist Scripps Ranch since 2004 Art, tennis, walking, travel, movies, theater Miramar Lake, La Jolla, Solana Beach, Del Mar, NTC
I
lanit Shalev grew up in Israel. In 2002, she and her family had an opportunity to move to Portland, OR. A passion for the arts and crafts coalesced into a love for the glass arts in Portland – the Northwest considered one of the largest glass arts communities – when Ilanit took a three-hour Introduction to Fused Glass course. Her future then became clear. In the past, she had done ceramics and made jewelry, “but I really found my love in glass,” she smiled. “It is such an amazing material to work with.” In 2004, she moved to Scripps Ranch and started building a studio in her garage. Now she is a full-time glass artist. Attending Pilchuk Glass School in Seattle and then receiving a scholarship to Corning, NY, Ilanit honed her skills. She had some shows around town and was nominated for an exhibit, along with six other emerging artists and two established artists (one being James Hubble), at the Sparks Gallery. “It was a huge honor to be part of this exhibit,” Ilanit explained. “I also had a couple of shows at the JCC in La Jolla.” Recently, Ilanit started a jewelry and fashion accessories line

involving fused glass, leather, and metal. Items she created can be found now in local boutiques, museum stores, and shops featuring handmade goods. As she continues developing this line, she’s been applying to some large fashion and accessories shows around the country. She’s also making a new logo for an internet services company. “My goal is to be an established artist so that people will recognize my art and will wait for a new body of work to come,” Ilanit said. Ilanit is enjoying raising her two children in Scripps Ranch, with a daughter at Scripps Ranch High School and a son at Marshall Middle. “We are part of the Chabad community in the neighborhood,” she shared, “which is a great Jewish community.” With hobbies and interests including tennis, walking, travel, movies, and theater, Ilanit always has goals she’s working to accomplish – for example, a while ago it was a 21-by-6-foot glass room divider for a local synagogue, complete within a year. She loves being able to tell stories through the medium of glass. “The sky is the limit,” she affirmed. “You just need to believe in yourself.”

Bruce and Patty Barnhill Reese (16) and Rachel (14) Scripps Ranch since 2013 Bruce – Corpus Christi, TX; Patty – Seoul, Korea Bruce – Recently retired Marine; Patty – Mom Three whippets – RacerX (12), Trixie (10), and Chim Chim (2) Lake Miramar, numerous canyon trails, the dog park, shopping, and so much more!
atty and Bruce Barnhill went to rival high schools in Northern Virginia, but it was love at first sight when friends set them up on a blind date. At the time, Bruce was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, NC, and Patty lived in Lake Ridge, VA. They spent a year dating long distance before Bruce was sent to Pasadena, and Patty followed. They moved around for Bruce’s
assignments – their son, Reese, was born in Newport, RI, and daughter Rachel was born in Fort Belvoir, VA – and reached San Diego in 2011. “We lived on base since Bruce was stationed at Miramar, and we weren’t quite sure what the future held for us,” explained Patty. “Almost immediately, we fell in love with San Diego and met so many wonderful people from the Scripps Ranch
community. We felt like Scripps Ranch was our home even before we moved to the community!” They purchased their 92131 home in May of 2013, and quickly settled in. Reese – 16 as of May 2 – is a sophomore at Scripps Ranch High School, and was on the football and track and field teams this year. He enjoys hitting the gym in his spare time. Rachel – who turns 14 on May 11 – is in eighth grade at Marshall Middle School. She dances ballet, pointe, lyrical, and jazz, and recently returned to horseback riding after a few years off. The whole family loves running. While on base, Patty and Bruce committed to running at least a mile a day for a year. Patty stopped at day 280 with a broken foot, but Bruce kept going for 535 days. When Bruce left on deployment in January 2014, the rest of the family decided to start a new streak. Reese made it past 200 days before a case of viral meningitis halted him, but Patty and Rachel made it through all 293 days of Bruce’s deployment. “Rachel decided to break her dad’s record, and then kept running because she loves it so much! As of May 1, she has run every single day for 840 days,” said Patty. She joked, “We are a family of streakers!” The Barnhills are excited about a new chapter in their lives. “Bruce just retired as a colonel in the United States Marine Corps on April 30 after 27 years of service, including his most recent 11-month deployment to Afghanistan,” revealed Patty. “He is currently enjoying some relaxation time before starting a new career in the defense industry.” Luckily, there’s no better place for the Barnhills to relax than their welcoming Scripps Ranch home.

LOCAL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL RIDE ACROSS CALIFORNIA
A
group of nearly 80 fifth graders participated in the annual Ride Across California this past April. Dennis Bueker and Mike Fickle, two fifth grade teachers with Poway Unified School District, began the challenge 26 years ago to inspire and empower their students with the experience of achieving a difficult goal. The Ride Across California starts at the Colorado River in Yuma, AZ and finishes at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas – a 260-mile journey over just seven days. The event is now organized with the help of the Rancho Family YMCA. 92131 resident Emma Mills was one of only a few San Diego Unified School District students to complete this year’s ride. She’s a Dingeman Elementary School student in Mrs. Schwartz’s fifth grade class. The group travelled through the beautiful California landscape, passing through farmland, sand dunes, canyons, and some steep hills.
16 • 92131Magazine.com • May | June 2016
“The ride is never about who comes in first,” explained Pippa Mills, Emma’s mother. “In fact, the children know that those who come in towards the end of each day need more encouragement than ever.” She praised the students for their manners throughout the ride, thanking all the chase drivers and volunteers. “Many life lessons were learned during that memorable week, and I am very grateful to everyone who made this ride possible,” said Pippa. “Mr. Bueker, the official caboose; Mr. Fickle, chase driver extraordinaire; Olav Schroeder and Bob Jacques, the wonderful lead riders; Christiane Staninger, who kept us organized and well-trained; Alison Willer, for making sure all the chase drivers were in the right place; and Jesse Pazdernik, YMCA coordinator. Thank you for giving each of these children – and us parents – the opportunity to dream big and achieve our goals.”

Within the music program at Scripps Ranch, Zak is one of the drum majors for the marching band. “For me, becoming the drum major as a junior and looking forward to next year’s competition and football season has been the ultimate achievement that I am most proud of in my life so far,” stated Zak. He is very excited to serve and lead his peers for both the marching and concert season. In addition to music, Zak is a participant in Mock Trial, where he has honed many skills, including public speaking. Zak is also a Boy Scout and is close to finishing his Eagle Scout rank. He enjoys his liberal arts classes at school and feels strongly about the power of language. “All my English classes have been eye-opening to the role of rhetoric in today’s society and how people tell stories,” said Zak.

Zachary Calvin McGaugh (16) Scripps Ranch High School 11 Chris and Sarah McGaugh Lucas McGaugh (13) Lake View Park – when I was a kid, I nicknamed this park “The Bunny Park” because every night around 5:30 p.m., the bunnies would hop around during the beautiful sunset beyond Lake Miramar.
Looking to the future, Zak wants to be a high school music educator. His biggest inspiration is his band director, Russell Shedd. “He has been the driving force behind our music program’s success. He is the kind of teacher high schoolers need,” said Zak, who hopes to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s music performance program after graduating from high school. Zak is also inspired and encouraged by his parents, Chris and Sarah, who are both teachers. Chris has taught physics and physiology at Scripps Ranch High School since 1994, and Sarah currently teaches special education at Walker Elementary in Mira Mesa. “My parents’ drive to help kids learn and shine to their potential is the foundation of our family. Each of us has different interests, but the same support for one another,” related Zak. As a family, the McGaughs enjoy backpacking, going to the beach, and attending each other’s activities. “My brother is a fantastic water polo player and skate boarder. It’s really cool to watch him compete. We both appreciate the value of practice and working hard, and I think that’s what makes us each other’s greatest cheerleader,” revealed Zak.

About the Chef Submit a rec www.9 2131ma ipe at gazine.c om
Name of Chef: Lori Shelton Family: Husband Greg, daughters Mary (20) and Susan (18) Community: Scripps Ranch Hobbies & Interests: Walking at the lake, attending the Del Mar Race Track. Making bows, hats, and anything crafty. Favorite Local Activity: Neighborhood gatherings and concerts in the park. About the Recipe: This recipe was given to me by my mom and I have been making it for our 4th of July party for several years. The recipe originally called for ham, but my mom said they could not afford ham so she substituted spam and it was such a big hit that we never changed it. The key to making it so tangy is letting it soak overnight in the vinegar. About the Chef: I grew up in Southern California and have never wanted to leave. I moved to Scripps Ranch in 1997 and have enjoyed every minute of it. I have been involved in my daughter’s soccer league and softball league for several years. All that involvement in my daughter’s sports led me to start my own business making sports hair bows. I starting this when she was only seven and am still going strong 13 years later. I spend my weekends at any given softball or soccer field selling the bows at tournaments. You can check out my website at www.sportshairbowlady.com.

Spring Cleaning in Scripps Ranch
The Scripps Ranch Civic Association recently teamed up with Kiwanis Club of Torrey Pines for the annual Spring Cleanup Day. The all-morning event was co-chaired by Elissa Barber and Barbara Perkins, and it took place at Carroll Canyon Business Park and the SRCA Community Center. Dumpsters were available for residents to bring waste from home – or to clean up a park or other public space. One Cell Battery Recycling Project provided collection boxes for dead batteries. Torrey Pines Kiwanis was joined by the Scripps Ranch High School Key Club, the local youth branch of Kiwanis. The students were instrumental in helping to break down larger items, making enough space in the dumpsters that the event could continue as scheduled until noon despite the high number of cars stopping by with trash. Learn more at www.scrippsranch.org and www.torreypineskiwanis.org.
Summer Movies in the Park
Summer Movies in the Park returns to Scripps Ranch on June 24 with a showing of MAX at Scripps Ranch Community Park. The next Scripps Ranch movie in the park will be Inside Out on Aug. 13, again at Scripps Ranch Community Park. Summer Movies in the Park is a collaboration between the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation, the Cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, National City, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Vista, USS Midway Museum, and the Port of San Diego. PowPAC Presents Bedside Manners
Stop by PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, starting May 6 for a hilarious comedy of relationships. Bedside Manners centers around a man named Ferris, who’s agreed to look after his sister’s seedy country hotel for a weekend. He doesn’t expect two young couples to arrive for romantic vacations – with each other’s spouses! The simultaneous affairs in the same location lead to a dizzying, humorous web of lies, confusion, and bewilderment, with poor Ferris caught in the middle. Bedside Manners was written by Derek Benfield, is directed by Brent A. Stringfield, and is produced by Chris and Brenda Robinson. Tyler Richards Hewes plays Ferris, Bill Shores plays Roger, Brandon Kaye Thomas plays Sally, Amy Stanley plays Helen, and Tamaz Bolkvadze plays Geoff. The play opens on Friday, May 6 and will run for five weekends, closing Sunday, June 5. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Find tickets and more at www.powpac.org.
Helping Animals in California
Assemblymember Brian Maienschein announced that he was recently named “Legislator of the Year” by PawPAC, a leading advocacy organization for animals in California. Maienschein received the award for authoring legislation last year to help animals in California. Two of his bills, AB 494 and AB 316 were signed into law by Governor Brown. AB 494 allows pets to be included in civil restraining orders and AB 316 allows veterinarians from other states to provide assistance in California when necessary. “It is an honor to be recognized as Legislator of the Year by PawPAC for my work to help animals in California,” he said. “I remain committed to ensuring that animals get the care and protection they need. I am proud to be recognized as a champion for the safety of animals and their owners in times of crisis.” Assemblymember Brian Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Carmel Valley, Clairemont, Del Dios, Del Mar Heights, Fairbanks Ranch, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Santa Fe, Sabre Springs, San Carlos, San Pasqual Valley, Scripps Ranch, Sorrento Valley, and Tierrasanta.
Buy Nothing Scripps Ranch
Scripps Ranch residents Vanessa Acheatel and Lesleigh Helders are spearheading a new sustainable movement in their community. Buy Nothing Scripps Ranch is part of the international Buy Nothing Project. Local groups form hyper-local gift economies – participants offer items they’re no longer using that their neighbors may need. It’s a way to reduce clutter around the house and find needed items without spending money. The goals are twofold: protect the environment through sustainable reuse and build local community connections. By sharing with those nearby, participants avoid the carbon dioxide emissions of trading across the city, as well as getting to know their neighbors better. “In our Scripps Ranch group, we have seen some amazing gifts passed along and some beautiful shows of gratitude,” shared volunteer Julianne Vallera. “We have borrowed tools, clothes, and other items from each other, have shared some talents, and have purged a few collections! Sending a loving gift to someone can brighten their day.” The group operates through the Buy Nothing Scripps Ranch Facebook group, and is only open to Scripps Ranch residents. To learn more about the Buy Nothing Project visit www.buynothingproject.org.
Get Ready for Red Shoe Day
San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. he 17th Annual Scripps Ranch Community Fair promises to once again bring neighbors together for a fun-filled day in 92131. Bring out your friends and family on Sunday, May 15 to take advantage of the rides, activities, entertainment, and refreshments provided by the Scripps Ranch Civic Association. The theme is Celebrating Our Community of Cultures, and the mission is simple: spotlight the wide range of backgrounds and experiences that have made Scripps Ranch the vibrant community it is today. Read along to learn more from our conversation with Fair Chairperson Jan McGinn.
Q&A
with people, resources, and funding into a higher quality of life in the Ranch.
with Chairperson Jan McGinn SCRIPPS RANCH COMMUNITY FAIR CONTACT INFORMATION Chairperson: Jan McGinn Phone: 858-337-6344 Email: communityfair@scrippsranch.org Website: www.scrippsranch.org/fair Twitter: @srcivic, #scrippsranchfair Facebook: www.facebook.com/ScrippsRanchCivicAssociation What is the theme of the 17th Annual Scripps Ranch Community Fair? This year’s theme is Celebrating Our Community of Cultures. We wanted to acknowledge the variety of backgrounds and lineages of our residents, as well as the commonality that brings us together as neighbors within the culture of Scripps Ranch and, by extension, San Diego. It’s the sum total of our individual and local cultures merging together that creates the high quality of life and fun within Scripps Ranch. What are some activities the community can look forward to? We are pleased to bring back the fair classics that everyone enjoys. The Kids’ Zone (a perennial favorite) will have rides, inflatables, face-painting, and activities. Green Street, sponsored by Sustainable Scripps Ranch, provides a venue for eco-friendly community groups and organizations showcasing their green knowledge, products, and services. You can wander, shop, and discover something new at the more than 80 exhibitors ranging from handmade gifts to local services, community groups, and more. We have a packed show of mostly new performers on stage from 12 to 7:30 p.m. And after you’ve enjoyed the exciting day at the fair, stay for the rockin’ and dancin’ free concert
featuring Breezn’. Whether you grab some dinner at the Food Court, enjoy a beverage in the Wine & Beer Garden, or settle in on your blanket, it’s a great way to end the day.
Every day, one of our dedicated volunteers accomplishes a valuable service, large or small, to help a Scripps Ranch neighbor. One of the many reasons why people enjoy living in Scripps Ranch is the variety of activities in which to learn, become involved, connect with neighbors, support local organizations, volunteer, and have fun! SRCA sponsors events like the Community Fair and 4th of July Parade, and groups such as Neighborhood Watch, Scripps Ranch 50 Plus, and Sustainable Scripps Ranch. And through timely and reliable communications, you can stay informed about what’s happening in Scripps Ranch via the SRCA Newsletter and social media. For more information about how the SRCA supports Scripps Ranch visit www.scrippsranch.org. When we all “get connected” with SRCA, we transform those connections
What has been the most rewarding aspect of working on the fair? It may sound cliché, but it is truly about the people. It takes many people to bring activities to life for the rest of us to enjoy. Our community is blessed to have wonderful volunteers who give of their time for the benefit of Scripps Ranch. I would like to give a special shout-out to the Fair Committee: Lori Erlenbach, Jodi Kim, Victoria Mazelli, Erin Mercer, Vince Petrucci, and Helen Plutner. They have worked so hard to deliver this event. What’s most rewarding is when we hear positive feedback and appreciation from residents, that they’ve really enjoyed the day at the park. After all, the Community Fair is one of the ways in which the SRCA gives back to the community. It’s their celebration. Is there anything else you’d like to share? This event is all for you. It’s a way for you to share in our own special Scripps Ranch culture with family, friends, and neighbors. It’s one of the many ways in which the SRCA gives back to the community. We hope you’ll join us at the Fair as we celebrate our community.
Can you tell us a bit about the Scripps Ranch Civic Association? SRCA connects you and our community, many times behind the scenes and always through dedicated volunteers, to get things done. For over 40 years, we’ve operated like a town council for the 12,000 households located within 92131. We live in a vibrant community – strong, neighborly, caring – supported by SRCA’s advocacy, activities, and communications. SRCA’s advocacy means your voice is heard and gains clout with civic leaders about improving infrastructure, development proposals, and public safety.

Lisa Susca, San Diego Castles Realty The daughter of two Scripps Ranch REALTORS ®, it seems like fate that Lisa Susca is now working in the same field. “I actually said I would never do it because I saw how hard they had to work,” Lisa shared. “But in my early 30s, I realized that I loved to help people, I liked the idea of running my own business, and I knew that I could obtain as much success as I set my mind to.” After taking the plunge, she’s never looked back. She loves being able to guide families through complex transactions, making huge life changes as stress-free as possible. Lisa grew up in Scripps Ranch and attended Jerabek Elementary. Currently, she’s on the Symphony in the Park committee and volunteers for Girl Scouts, St. Gregory the Great Church, and Neighborhood watch; she knows the community inside and out. She shared that the local real estate market is unique in its lack of inventory and the overwhelming desire for people wanting to live in Scripps Ranch. “REALTORS® have to do a lot of networking to connect buyers and sellers in this community,” she explained. “If there is a way to get a deal structured, I will make it happen. I am tenacious and work tirelessly for my clients.” She’s found that building relationships with fellow REALTORS® is just as important as building relationships with clients. She works equally with both buyers and sellers. “I am very versed in dealing with many complexities, like distressed sales and concurrent closings,” said Lisa. She also prioritizes strategic marketing, adding, “I create property URLs, have high-quality brochures, and use only the best in photography. I target market, and work towards selling the home, not myself.”
“If there is a way to get a deal structured, I will make it happen. I am tenacious and work tirelessly for my clients.”
REALTOR® Her penchant for problem-solving pays off, and Lisa ends up becoming friends with most clients. Her growing neighborhood network is the biggest reward.

:::: FALCON INSIDER
by UMA TALAGADADIVI special to 92131 Magazine
So This is Goodbye I
t’s dark outside. Pomerado Road is quiet, peaceful. I watch tall eucalyptus trees and Marshall Middle School rush past. It hits me then, as I sit in my car, that my time as a high school student and Scripps Ranch resident has come to a close. So this is goodbye. To missing Friday special at Dingeman Elementary because I had Safety Patrol. To pretending to travel the country by jumping from state to state on the painted map of the United States near the red playground. To biking around my neighborhood. To walking to Baskin-Robbins before it moved away. To weaving through the large crowd of people on the ramp connecting the A building to the paseo. To doing a rain dance to get out of
running the Falcon challenge. I will miss Scripps Ranch. To the people who made my childhood so memorable, thank you. Before I go, here is my final advice to high school students: 1. Be impulsive (not always, and not in dangerous situations, but in small measures). You’ll never be a teenager in high school ever again. 2. Realize that if you work hard, everything will work out in the end. Also realize that bad grades are unavoidable. What is important is learning to move forward. 3. Have the time of your life. Don’t stress. Keep these years in perspective – you still have your whole life waiting for you.

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Should You Stage Your Home? by SCOTT VOAK
I
f you are selling your home, you probably realize that you need to clean up the yard and put away half the kids’ toys, but do you need to take the next step? Should you stage your home? I have seen articles that say a staged home can bring in 6-20% more, and I’ve seen studies using staged computer models that show no difference. I believe the true answer is somewhere in between. According to the SANDICOR MLS, I’ve successfully marketed more homes in 92127 since 2008 than any other agent, so I’ve seen a lot of houses and feel I am qualified to address this issue. First of all, in March the average detached home in 92127 sold for $1.14 million. The average cost of staging that home if it is vacant will range from $3,000 to $5,000. If staging only makes a 1% difference in your sales price, it’s a 100-225% return on your money! So, if there is even a possibility that it might help, you should consider staging. A main reason I believe staging works is that today’s buyers are used to instant gratification. If they don’t like something on the internet, they move to another page. If they don’t like the feeling of your home they move on the next. They don’t have the vision to see how the home “could be,” they are going to make their decision based on your home “as is.” A good professional interior designer can make your home feel a lot better and appeal to a broader range of buyers so you receive more offers. More offers should translate into a higher sales price.
A caveat here is that I am talking about professional staging. Real estate agents are not professional stagers. Two last arguments in favor of staging: • Builders sell more homes than any agent does, and they all stage their homes. • I feel strongly enough that it helps you get a higher price that I include an interior design review and staging in all my listings.

THE PERFECT
PICNIC
Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL
W
hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.
LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org
MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us

OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the Mission church which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org
