I
t will come as no surprise – for people that know me and people that regularly read my letters – that I love our team here at ZCode Magazines. Find the hearts, I am lucky enough to work with a fantastic group WIN COOL STUFF! of driven and talented professionals that put See page 14 their hearts and souls into creating our local community magazines. Whether it’s editorial, graphics, production, or sales, every member of the ZCode Team has a direct influence on the pages of each and every magazine. For several years, I’ve had an idea swirling around in my head. It’s now time to put that idea into play. Starting with this issue, we have created a fun way to share that love and spirit put into each and every issue. We call it the Hidden Heart Campaign. Simply put, we want to give stuff away! But there’s a catch. We’ve hidden hearts in several advertisements throughout this issue. Your job is to flip through the pages and locate the specific advertisements that contain a ZCode Hidden Heart (see example on the right). Once you’ve found all of the hearts, simply email us your list specifying which advertisements contain the ZCode Hidden Hearts and you’ll Derrick Breaux instantly qualify for a chance to win some very cool Publisher stuff – from gift cards to t-shirts and more. We will announce winners regularly via email and social media. Thank you for reading 92131 Magazine. Be sure to tell all of our advertising partners that you saw them in the magazine. ince she was a little girl, 15-year-old Haley Nguyen has always spent a lot of time at her local library. “I've always gone to the library, wherever I've lived, beginning from when I was very little,” shared Haley. “There is something very welcoming, homey, yet exciting about libraries.” So, last summer, when Haley noticed a sign outside of the Scripps Ranch Library requesting a volunteer to help decorate the window display, she was quick to contact the Friends of the Library. “I'm very proud of the summer window display I did!” exclaimed Haley. “I was also offered more volunteer opportunities. I soon began a regular shift in Grace’s Book Nook and began participating in the Library’s Teen Council.” Since her start in volunteering for the library, Haley has become an advocate for getting others involved, as well. “The Friends of
the Library are looking for volunteers to fill shifts in Grace’s Book Nook,” explained Haley. “The Book Nook brings in much of the revenue they donate to activities, events, and materials for the library.” She continued, “Also, if you're not already, I would encourage you to become a member of Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library. It's inexpensive, but goes a long way towards building the community through our library.” Haley – who has lived in Scripps Ranch for almost three years – is a sophomore at Scripps Ranch High School, where she is a member of the Mock Trial and Model United Nations club. “My favorite part of school, besides the people, of course, is the clubs,” she shared. “There are so many of them and they are so welcoming. It’s a great opportunity to explore interests.” Aside from school, Haley’s activities include

volunteering at Marshall Middle School and for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “Oh, and I’ve been Master of Ceremonies for Science Night at E.B. Scripps Elementary before too,” she added. But her activity of choice is visiting the Scripps Ranch library. “My favorite place in Scripps is, not surprisingly, the library,” said Haley. “When I’m there, I always seem to be bumping into people I know!” Haley’s wish for the library would be that it continues to increase its visitors. “The library is a wonderful place for people to participate in events, meet with friends, or just check out books and other media,” stated Haley. “The more visitors in the library, the greater its success in building community.” She added, “September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, so if you don't have a library card yet, now is the time to get one!”

The Barioni-Amos Family Appreciates the Small-Town Feel of Scripps Ranch by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Spark Photography

rowing up in small communities, Matthew Amos and Erica Barioni-Amos were drawn to the small town-feel of Scripps Ranch. Six years ago, the couple discovered the area not only boasted great neighbors and a family atmosphere, it also provided easy access to parks for their active lifestyle. Today, Matthew and Erica and their two children, Evan and Giada, happily call Stonebridge Estates home. Matthew was born and raised in Fallbrook, while Erica’s childhood was spent on the family farm in Imperial Valley. After meeting on a blind date, they admitted it was “love at first sight.” Today, Matthew is a broker associate with Pacific Sotheby’s, a certified International Property Specialist, and working to become the first Accredited Land Consultant in San

She has started her own business, Seagrass and Sage Interiors, where she works on select projects, including clientele from Sotheby’s International Realty and MLA General Contractor. Evan, 10, attends Francis Parker School. He plays competitive soccer with the Scripps Ranch Soccer Club. “When Evan is not on the field, you can find him building things with his dad,” Erica shared. Giada, 4, also has a favorite activity – dressing as a princess. “When she is not dressed as a princess, Giada can be found on the sidelines cheering on her big brother at soccer games.” As a family, sports and family trips are priorities. “We enjoy getting away to Park City, UT for a little snow action (snowboarding and skiing), family hikes, trips to ‘papa’s farm,’ and spending time with family and friends,” the couple shared. They also acknowledged that they are “a BIG soccer loving family.” Around the house, having fun is part of the Barioni-Amos family life. After a surprise gift of three nerf guns from Matthew, family nerf war games have become a popular activity. On a more serious side, the couple often surprise people with their age. “People are surprised to hear how young we are after seeing how much we have accomplished at our age,” Erica and Matthew said.

The theater was founded in 1978, and has continued to grow and evolve over the years. “Scripps Ranch Theatre became a professional theater in 2006,” said Executive Director David McClure, “and the word ‘community’ was dropped from our name at that time. University. David elaborated, “We produce theater that challenges audiences, expands their horizons, and touches them intellectually and emotionally.” Nearly 40 years ago, BJ Scott, the company’s founder, called together volunteers to discuss forming a community theater. David added, “They envisioned the theater as a source of entertainment for and by the local community.” Scripps Ranch Theatre was born, and has expanded, to inspire via its acclaimed and award-winning productions. The theater depends on volunteers and tax-deductible contributions to grow the experience, as well as its loyal audiences. An expanded facility and theatrical capabilities are on the horizon. Honors Student COMPETITOR Angelo Carrasco Has a Promising Future in STEM by LINDA FRABL | photo by Spark Photography
A
ngelo Carrasco was chosen to represent San Diego at the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders, an honors-only STEM program that took place in Boston, MA from June 29 to July 1. This 16-year-old, who will be a junior at Scripps Ranch High School, was selected because of his academic achievement, his leadership potential, and his love of science and technology. The event featured notable guest speakers who discussed the latest advances in science and technology. Crediting his mom’s sound advice for his success, Angelo explained, “She taught me to believe. Believing is the key to everything. You have to believe you can accomplish something before you can accomplish it, otherwise you are just cheating yourself.” Name: School: Parent: Favorite Local Activity:
Angelo Carrasco (16) Scripps Ranch High School Alessandra Lezama Football
Aside from his aptitude in the science and tech fields, Angelo is also an ace on the football field, as well as in track and field. He has been playing on his school’s football team for the past two years, and every spring he does the shot put and discus throwing. Angelo stated, “I really enjoy the challenge of competing, especially against my last score.”
20 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • August | September 2016
At school, Angelo’s favorite subject is history, and he commented, “It’s fascinating to learn all the intricacies that prove that history truly repeats itself.” Upon graduation, Angelo’s goal is to attend Stanford University and eventually work in an engineeringrelated job with a business or law degree. Angelo confessed, “I truly believe I have a great shot due to my passion and ability to impact the future.” In his free time, Angelo adores reading (his favorite book was Misery, by Stephen King), playing computer games, and even jumping rope. He also cherishes quality time with his family, which consists of his mom, his three dogs, a cat, and a horse. Angelo revealed, “My mom and I have a routine during the week to make sure we get through everything we need to do, and then we like to relax on the weekends. We also take road trips.” No matter where his journeys may lead him, we know that Angelo will have a promising future. For the time being, though, Angelo is content to live in his Scripps Legacy neighborhood, located around the corner from Cypress Canyon Park. Angelo elaborated, “There are lots of trees, a big park, tennis courts, and my neighbors are super nice. I love living here!”

YO U R N E I G H B O R ’ S R E C I P E
INGREDIENTS 5-6 1 3 3 5-7 3
pounds of pork shoulder cut in 2x2 cubes can chipotle peppers (12 oz) large onions sliced in ¼-inch rings pounds of ripe Roma tomatoes large dry California peppers tablespoons chicken bouillon powder
1 2 3
package of Maseca masa powder for tamales pounds pork lard teaspoons baking powder Garlic cloves (use many if you love garlic) Salt to taste
DIRECTIONS
Filling 1. 2. 3.
Cook pork in enough water to cover. Add salt to taste at the end. Shred pork and set aside. Save juice for the sauce mix. In a large pan, sauté sliced onions in one tablespoon of heated lard for a few minutes, then add the shredded pork. Stir for a few more minutes together, then set aside.
Filling Sauce 1. 2. 3. 4.
5.
Cook tomatoes and peppers in enough water to cover until very soft. Blend the cooked peppers, tomatoes, and can of chipotles with garlic cloves, chicken bouillon, and pork juice. Add ½ cup of masa powder to the blender to thicken the sauce so your tamales don’t come out runny. In a large pan, heat 2 tablespoons of lard. Pour in your sauce mix and stir until cooked. When you feel the masa has cooked, you can stop stirring and let it cool a little. Add the pork and onion mix and fold well. The sauce should be thick when it cools, and watch the ratio of meat to sauce.
Dough 1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
Mix Maseca (save ½ cup for the filling above) with lots of water. Mix with bare hands until you reach a hummus-like consistency. Add salt and baking powder, and mix again. Add hot lard slowly and mix carefully until you reach a hummus-like consistency again. Soak the clean, washed husks in warm water and leave to soften. Then spread the masa over the husks. Make sure it’s a very thin spread, and keep in mind it’s going to expand to twice its thickness. Place a spoonful of the filling and wrap not too tightly to allow the expansion. Stand the tamales upright (folded side down) in a large steamer pot fitted with a steamer basket and lid. For best results, the tamales should be firmly packed, but not too tightly. I use my pasta pot. Cook for about 1 ½ hours well covered, making sure you don’t run out of water.

Fourth Grade Girls’ Perfect Season
The Scripps Ranch Fourth Grade Girls Basketball team achieved a perfect season in the San Diego Sol spring competitive league. The team won all regular season games and then went on to win the championship, finishing 10-0. The girls began playing together earlier this year with the Scripps National Junior Basketball All-Stars, and then stayed together to join the Scripps Ranch Falcons Girls club program. “These girls work hard at practice and bring a desire to learn. Plus they genuinely get along and respect each other, which is so important for a team,” said Coach Tania Kramer. “During breaks in tournaments, while most teams disperse, you can catch these girls sitting around in a circle, playing UNO together.” The team consists of Jadyn, Camryn, Maddie, Sinclair, Victoria, Michelle, Lexi, Charlize, Arianna, Siena, and Kiana, coached by Tania Kramer, Wes Haworth, and Cedric Collins. SCRIPPS RANCH GIRL SCOUTS PROVE THE POSSIBILITIES OF GIRL POWER IN 92131 30 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • August | September 2016

Q&A CAN YOU GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF GIRL SCOUTS? Juliette Gordon Low envisioned an organization that would prepare girls to meet their world with courage, confidence, and character. In 1912, in the midst of the Progressive Era – and at a time when women in the United States couldn’t yet vote – this nearly deaf 51-year-old sparked a worldwide movement inspiring girls to embrace, together, their individuality, strength, and intellect. Juliette, affectionately known as “Daisy” by her family and close friends, gathered 18 girls in her hometown of Savannah, GA, to share what she had learned abroad about a new outdoor and educational program for youth, and with this, the Girl Scout Movement was born. Along with Juliette, these first Girl Scouts blazed trails and redefined what was possible for themselves and for girls everywhere. That small
On the eve of Girl Scouting’s 100th year in San Diego, we spoke with Co-Service Unit Manager Cynthia Collins from the Scripps Ranch Service Unit (SRSU) about the learning and leadership opportunities available for local girls. As the largest single-zip code service unit in the county, SRSU fosters both independence and teamwork for over 750 local girls. It’s a girl-led movement, where Ambassadors and Seniors teach and inspire Daisies and Brownies. From camping and crafting to cookie sales and community service, read along to see how this worldwide organization is making a difference right here in 92131.
with Co-Service Unit Manager
Cynthia Collins gathering of girls Juliette Gordon Low hosted over a century ago has grown into a global movement in which all girls can see themselves reflected – and that today includes nearly three million Girl Scouts in 92 countries and more than 59 million alumnae, united across distance and decades by lifelong friendships, shared adventures, and the desire to do big things to make the world a better place. San Diego’s first Girl Scout troop was founded in Coronado in 1917. Today, nearly 35,000 girls and adults are proud to be part of Girl Scouts San Diego! San Diego Girl Scouts offers girl activities and events as well as volunteer training at locations in Balboa Park, Escondido, and Carlsbad. In addition, they hold camp programs at Winacka and Whispering Oaks, and mountain properties near Julian. As you can see by the date, San Diego’s council will be celebrating their 100 th anniversary next year!
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE SERVICE UNIT? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS ROLE? I have been service unit co-manager for seven and a half years. I came in at a point when our existing co-manager had to step down due to the reappearance of her breast cancer. Sadly, she passed away the following fall. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF YOUR ROLE? I love watching the progression of involvement of both the girls and the adults. Both start out not very sure of what to expect, and inevitably develop into confident and evolved individuals.

Scripps Ranch Girl Scouts in 5 Words Fun Communityoriented Dedicated Patriotic Girl Power!
WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR BECOMING INVOLVED WITH GIRL SCOUTS?
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE WISH FOR THE SERVICE UNIT THIS YEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Originally, it was probably because I always wanted to be a Brownie, but never had the chance to be one! Now Girl Scouts begins with Daisies, which can include any TK student, Kindergartner, or first grader. I remain involved because I feel it is one of the best fraternities you can be part of. I used to say sorority, but now we have fathers that are leaders!
To continue to enjoy the camaraderie that our service unit enjoys. We are such a socioeconomically diverse service unit, and yet we feel like one big, happy family. And like any happy family, it’s all about the memories we create with life experiences!
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EXCITING PLANS THIS YEAR FOR THE GIRL SCOUTS INVOLVED WITH THE SCRIPPS RANCH SERVICE UNIT? Our schedule of opportunities is packed! We have encampments for Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes and older girls, and Daisy Day for the little ones. We have Journey in a Weekend and Journey in a Day for all levels, from Daisies to older girls (high school aged). The Journey program is required to earn Bronze, Silver, or Gold Awards – these awards look great on college applications!
WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION FOR A GIRL TO BECOME PART OF A TROOP? There are many styles of troops. Some like to do outdoor adventure. Some like to earn lots of badges and patches. Some are very focused on philanthropy and community service. Some like doing a little bit of all that! Scripps Ranch Girl Scouts is all about involving parents and girls so they feel they are part of a community. We have girls from public, home, and private school sectors. It’s just a phenomenal way to transcend those differences and bring girls together.
“I love learning to do new things. One time I went to a sewing place and made my own purse with a sewing machine. It’s also a lot of fun to go to encampments and see my friends outside of school and meet new people.” – Emma Collins, Senior

HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT JOINING A TROOP? We are always looking for ways to place girls in troops. Sometimes it takes time. It’s all about volunteers. If your girl wants to be part of a troop, I always ask if you, as the adult, can be the leader. I started off by leading my 20-year-old’s troop, and look where I am today! If troops are full, you can always create a new troop by getting a co-leader, asking four other girls besides your daughter, and voila! You are off to creating Girl Scout memories for your girl. as you go along. You just need to be willing to share your time to develop yourself. If you can’t, then we can always ask if anyone has room in their troop for one more. TELL US ABOUT THE VARIOUS TYPES OF GIRL SCOUT BADGES. Badges have evolved over the years. The Girl Scout handbook has also evolved. There are still skill-oriented badges, and there are others that are based on interests. Girl Scouts USA is constantly trying to keep up with changing times. You’ll see cyber and media-oriented topics that you would
never have seen 10 years ago. The community and environmental issues are always changing, so the serviceoriented opportunities are also always changing. The Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are advanced service project opportunities geared towards the Juniors, Cadettes, and Senior/ Ambassadors, respectively. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE TROOPS IN 92131? We have the largest single-zip code service unit in San Diego-Imperial County. There are approximately 46 service units. Some have combined
Girl Scout Grade Levels “Girl Scouts has taught me to appreciate what I have and the importance of giving back and getting involved in the community. I feel everyone has the opportunity to make an impact, great or small, by working together. I love the friendships I’ve built and all the fun we have had along the way.” – Alexis Bautista, Senior zip codes. We have over 750 girls in our service unit and over 65 troops. That’s a lot of girls! We have amazing leaders and volunteers. There are many troops that have girls from various schools. Some have girls from just their elementary school. We have a Discovery Nite every fall and spring – usually the Tuesday after the October and May Leader meetings. These are great onehour meet-and-greets for the girls, involving prospective and current Girl Scouts. Leader meetings tend to be the second Monday of every month, at Dingeman Elementary’s multi-purpose room, starting at 7 p.m. Look for the meeting schedule on our Scripps Ranch Girl Scout website! TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS OF YOUR SERVICE UNIT’S MEMBERS. There are so many, I can’t tell you all of them. They are as diverse as our membership! But I can tell you one thing, we probably have more Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award recipients than any other San DiegoImperial service unit. On a larger scale, we have over 30 positions on our team (that’s unheard of in any other service unit!) and rarely do we have a vacancy. We
have proven to our council that being big is not a bad thing – at one point they wanted to split up our service unit to make it more manageable. Luckily, we did not. We just had to work smarter, and the reward is that we enjoy diverse friendships with girls and adults from different schools. ARE THERE ANY ANNUAL OR UPCOMING EVENTS IN WHICH THE SCRIPPS RANCH SERVICE UNIT TAKES PART? We have our nut sales coming up in the fall. Some people don’t know about this, but it is more low-key than cookies and gives a troop the opportunity to build seed money for their troop, and also teaches the girls about responsibility. Cookies are always huge in 92131 and we sold over 70,000 boxes last year! We have an amazing cookie chairperson that just rocks. We thank the community for purchasing cookies from the girls – this is their biggest fundraiser and helps pay for camping and other troop activities. DOES THE SCRIPPS RANCH SERVICE UNIT NEED VOLUNTEERS? WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR GETTING INVOLVED? We love our volunteers, and we have something for everybody!
Our management team is amazing. This large of a service unit depends on good people working together to bring the girls a quality program. You can always email srgsmanager@gmail.com if you feel your heart strings tugging to help!

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD? My advice to any other service units, and there are some that are struggling, is to run your service unit like a business. You have income, expenses, and marketing challenges… not much different than any other business. The bottom line is to be a healthy service unit with great human resources, be financially solvent and, hopefully, maintain a nice reserve account. At the end of the year we thank our leaders with a free dinner at Yanni’s restaurant. Everyone loves Yanni’s, and it’s always good to support a local business owner in Scripps Ranch. We budget this event in so that we can not only thank the hardworking volunteers, but also enjoy each other’s company after a successful year of working with our girls. It’s so gratifying to see these amazing women relax for one night.

Celebrating 20 Years
DINGEMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CONTINUES TO SUCCEED
D
ingeman Elementary School celebrated its 20th school year this year. The school originally opened as a K-5 campus in 1995, became a K-6 school in 2001, and then returned to K-5 in 2007 with the opening of Marshall Middle School in Scripps Ranch. Dingeman Elementary was named for Colonel Robert Dingeman, affectionately known as “Mr. Scripps Ranch,” who has dedicated himself to the improvement of the community, with a strong emphasis on the local schools and education. The school celebrated its anniversary this year in conjunction with Bob Dingeman Day. The celebration ceremony included remarks from former principals Jan Kaneko, Brad Callahan, and Kimie Lochtefeld as well as County Supervisor Dave Roberts, a representative from Assemblyman Brian Maienschein’s office, and Councilmember Mark Kersey. Staff members wore shirts embellished with Dingeman’s 20th anniversary logo and all attendees were entertained by the Dingeman
Elementary Honor Choir and Advanced Strings. Dingeman Elementary seeks to ensure that parents, teachers, and community members are recognized and function as partners in the education of all children. The school continuously scores well above state and district averages on statewide testing, and was again named an Honor Roll school by the Educational Results Partnership and Campaign for Business and Education Excellence this year. “Our teachers are learners themselves, constantly seeking opportunities to strengthen our teaching practice,” said Principal Tamara Lewis. “Some of our goals for next year include participating in Math Studio, a professional development opportunity designed to deepen our understanding around the teaching of mathematics, as well as beginning the implementation of Next Generation Science Standards.” Discover more at www.sandiegounified.org/schools/dingeman.

lues and jazz artist Robin Henkel performs throughout San Diego and beyond when he’s not composing and mentoring student musicians. At 64, he’s known his share of downs and outs and glittering successes. “I became a working musician exploring the world of hard knocks as I pursued music as a career,” shared Robin on his 40 years in the scene. “I feel comfortable and established, as well as honored with a satisfying sense of regional recognition.” He plays more than 20 shows a month. His music is the blues – country blues. “Not really ‘country’ as in

country western, but rather blues that grew out of the harsh conditions for workers in the Mississippi Delta,” added Robin. He calls it the “guts and soul of a deep-rooted American tradition” that influenced many bands, he pointed out, from the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin. Robin has performed with Jumbalayah, Johnny Almond, Sha Na Na, Big Jay McNealy and San Diego Symphony, to name several. He has opened for Dizzy Gillespie, BB King, Arlo Guthrie, among many legends. Robin also plays in his jazz band once a month and reflected that “one of the more profound American art forms” is underappreciated. He put it this way, “Public appeal is not a prerequisite to the creation of true art.” Robin graduated with a B.A. in political science from Cal Western (now Point Loma College) and from the class of ’69 at Kearny High School. In his work with students he advises, “You’ll need that love and commitment to get through the discouraging times when it’s not going so great. And if you don’t have the success you hoped for, at least you spent your life doing what you wanted.” Robin was born in Pensacola, where his dad was stationed in the Navy, and they moved to San Diego when he was six. When he was eight, his mom gave him a plastic toy ukulele. They were living then in Serra Mesa. His dad played a bit of depression-era folk songs and his parents took him to experience folk music in coffeehouses here in the 1960s. “I liked the sound of the blues before I understood it was a style of music,” he said. His life is measured more by soulful happiness, or as Robin described, “I’m keeping excitement down to a dull roar.” It’s like a low-key rhythm, playing blues and jazz, while living an upbeat life. 1 • 92130MAGAZINE.COM 38 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM• •August August| September | September2016 2016

ike many kids growing up, I had preconceptions of high school from movies that were shattered once I actually stepped on campus. The falsest myth was probably that high school only contained cliques and molds, and I would have to choose a group and be stuck in it. The reality is high school is more of a drawn-out prologue before the novel begins and the real world comes rushing in, a platform to continually discover more about yourself and make mistakes and cultivate dreams, and the best part about this introduction is the endless support from both the students and faculty.
Over the years, I have met many talented and kind peers at Scripps Ranch High School. One of my best friends has a paper published in a scientific journal. Another has played at Carnegie Hall. In any of my given classes, the students around me think in different languages and touch the world with different hands, but their minds and hearts are always open. There are teachers who have taught me unforgettable lessons beyond the classroom, teachers who listen when I am both hopeful and unsure about the future, who tell me to never compromise for happiness, who inspire

r. David S. Gilmore’s path to becoming an orthodontist has been a unique one. After graduating from Annapolis and serving as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy for 14 years, he decided to change careers and pursue his passion of dentistry. Earning both his D.D.S. and his M.S. in Dentistry at the University of Pacific, Dr. Gilmore worked his remaining years in the U.S. Navy as a dentist and orthodontist. It’s been an incredible location for us that has been a big factor in our growth and success.” The office, which was recognized for excellence in the 2012 Dental Office Design Competition, was designed to be a state-ofthe-art, high-tech facility. “It’s an open bay design providing for a modern, comfortable environment,” described Dr. Gilmore. “The office is appealing to adults and children alike,

t’s dark outside. Pomerado Road is quiet, peaceful. I watch tall eucalyptus trees and Marshall Middle School rush past. It hits me then, as I sit in my car, that my time as a high school student and Scripps Ranch resident has come to a close. So this is goodbye. To missing Friday special at Dingeman Elementary because I had Safety Patrol. To pretending to travel the country by jumping from state to state on the painted map of the United States near the red playground. To biking around my neighborhood. To walking to Baskin-Robbins before it moved away. To weaving through the large crowd of people on the ramp connecting the A building to the paseo. To doing a rain dance to get out of
running the Falcon challenge. I will miss Scripps Ranch. To the people who made my childhood so memorable, thank you. Before I go, here is my final advice to high school students: 1. Be impulsive (not always, and not in dangerous situations, but in small measures). You’ll never be a teenager in high school ever again. 2. Realize that if you work hard, everything will work out in the end. Also realize that bad grades are unavoidable. What is important is learning to move forward. 3. Have the time of your life. Don’t stress. Keep these years in perspective – you still have your whole life waiting for you.
4. There is a place for you in the world, whether it is a place in a college, a job, or somewhere else. Waiting. You just have to find it. To everyone who read my articles, thank you so much! Being a Falcon Insider has been one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. Finally, to the Class of 2016, I will see you at our reunion I hope you all have the best lives! All my love, Uma

When Is the Best Time to Buy Real Estate? by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO
A
s in most businesses, real estate has an annual cycle. Knowing when prices tend to be higher and lower can mean the difference of tens of thousands of dollars in final purchase price. Much of this cycle revolves around the basic logistics of life. In the spring, families are preparing for the end of the school year, and that’s when most people move, so as not to disrupt their children’s education mid-year. To prepare for that move, they start looking for (and making offers on) their next home. This increase in buyers creates more of a demand, moving prices higher.
Conversely, during the holiday months of November and December, school is in full swing, and most families are focused more on getting together with loved ones than they are about packing up and moving. Fewer buyers means lower prices. So, in general, if you are looking to get the lowest price for your next home, the best time to buy is in the fall and winter. Remember, however, many sellers know the best time to sell is in the spring, so the number of houses to choose from in the winter will be less. You may not be able to find “the perfect house,” even if it is at the perfect price.

A CENTENNIAL
CELEBRATION Be Part of the Pride by Celebrating the San Diego Zoo's 100th Year by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
W
aterfalls cascading over rocks into pools below, the sun peeking through thick foliage, faint sounds of birds chirping and monkeys laughing in the distance... It's easy to forget for a moment that you're not actually strolling through the jungle! And that is the beauty of the worldfamous San Diego Zoo: it connects people closely with animals in the most natural way possible. The San Diego Zoo, operated by San Diego Zoo Global, has been a pioneer in the zoological sphere since its inception in 1916, from being among the first in the world to build innovative open-air grotto exhibits to making key contributions to medical research, natural science, and wildlife conservation. This year the zoo celebrates its centennial anniversary – 100 years of trials and triumphs, fun memories, and, of course, lots of fascinating animals! With over 3,500 rare and endangered animals, more than 650 species and subspecies, and over 700,000 exotic plants living on the 100-acre property, the zoo is dedicated to preserving wildlife as one of the world's leading global conservation organizations. Some have even referred to the zoo as a living outdoor classroom, educating children and adults alike about the natural world. So for the remainder of the year, join us in celebrating the extraordinary people and animals who have made this beloved San Diego icon what it is today.

“IS TREATMENT REALLY NECESSARY?”
ASK THE PLUMBER!
Brockmire Plumbing Services Inc., DBA BPS Plumbing and Drains has been bringing expertise and quality services to San Diego County for over 20 years. BPS Founder and Owner Eric Brockmire began plumbing in 1987. A few years later he knew he wanted to start his own business that would provide better service than the industry standard, and BPS was born. Eric wanted to know why so many plumbing fixtures kept breaking, so he got to the root of the problem. “I realized that the quality of the water had a major effect on the plumbing systems and the appliances,” Eric said. “So I started learning about water...and BPS came up with solutions.” BPS is unique from other plumbing companies in that it directly addresses this issue by offering water quality solutions. “We have access to the best equipment in the industry that will provide you with many years of great tasting and high quality water that keeps your plumbing working great and you feeling healthy.” In addition to water treatment, BPS provides other comprehensive plumbing services, including drain clearing, water heater repair and replacement, leak detection and locating, and sewer inspection and
repair, just to name a few. Above all else, BPS is a leader in the industry because they focus on business integrity and bringing only the highest levels of knowledge and experience to their customers. They also genuinely care about finding solutions and providing options that fit within the customer’s budget. “We are an honest company,” said Eric. “Let us prove how professional we are and how much we really do care.”
