’ve been champing at the bit to take the family out to San Vicente Reservoir. It reopened to the public this past fall after being closed since 2008 for the San Vicente Dam Raise Project, which created new emergency water storage for the region by raising the height of the dam. Our boat had been in storage since last summer. Needless to say, it needed a little cleaning to get ready for the water. Although I was alone with this thought, I felt cleaning the boat would be the perfect Saturday family project. After a long day using plenty of elbow grease – scrubbing, bribing, rinsing, twisting arms, and scrubbing some more – the boat was ready to go. Batteries charged. Oil checked twice (I learned my lesson the hard way on this, but that story is for another day). The expanded San Vicente Reservoir lived up to all the chatter. I think the new marina and boat launch is now the best in SoCal. The first boat ride of the season went well. Kids were nothing but smiles. My son took his turn at the helm and practiced his driving skills. My daughter giggled each time we encountered a wave. The engine sounded great, and the cool wind on our faces felt even better. I want to say the outing went without a hiccup, but we had a minor mechanical issue at the end of the day once we got the boat back on the trailer. My outdrive wouldn’t trim up into the travel position. Several people offered assistance. I politely declined, letting them know that I was contemplating leaving the boat behind and having someone deal with it the next morning. One gentleman, who had been out fishing with his buddies all day, wouldn’t take no for an answer. He jumped into my boat and handed me his business card (which showed he owned a boat repair service). Within minutes, he had his tool pouch out and Derrick Breaux my boat outdrive raised back into the proper towing position. Publisher When I thanked Dave of DCM Marine, he just said, “Hey man, that’s what boat people do. We take care of each other.” I couldn’t help but wonder how much better the world would be if everyone had a boating mentality and enthusiastically looked out for one another. Special thanks to Dave Perez of DCM Marine. If you need a knowledgeable boat guy for new and used parts, service, or repair, Dave’s your man. He can be reached at 619-913-0420. Power GIRL
The Girl Scouts Program Has Helped Zoe Antonoff Discover Her Strengths and Passions by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Soul of Photography
F
ifteen-year-old Zoe Antonoff is a senior at Canyon Crest Academy. “My favorite school subject is art, because it’s fun to get creative once in awhile!” exclaimed Zoe, who nurtures her love for art by crafting do-it-yourself projects in her downtime. “I think they are creative and fun to do,” said Zoe. She also loves to read, play sports, and visit the nearby beach. “I love hanging out with friends there,” she shared. But Zoe’s passion seems to be for a different activity – one in which she has been active for 11 years: Girl Scouts. “I am a Girl Scout Senior in Troop 1276,” explained Zoe. “My experience in Girl Scouts has been amazing. I have learned so much, and I’m very thankful I stuck with it through middle school and high school.” Throughout her years in Girl Scouts, Zoe has been taught many things: camping in the wilderness, gardening, teaching yoga, sewing, archery, and flying on a trapeze, to name a few. “I personally have learned to value friendship, becoming more confident in myself, business management, making a goal and pursuing it, and how to overcome my stage fright through public speaking,” added Zoe.

Girl Scouts has also introduced Zoe to volunteer work. She has sewn clothes for the homeless, worked at food banks, and knitted blankets for hospitalized children. “Volunteering was very mind-opening,” shared Zoe, who also volunteers in Camp Kesem, a program that raises money and awareness for children with parents who have cancer. “The money goes towards two free weeks of summer camp which allows those kids to have the opportunity to go have fun and relive their childhood again,” she explained. Zoe feels that one of her biggest accomplishments while in Girl Scouts has been earning the title of San Diego’s Top-Seller for three consecutive years. This means that Zoe sold over 2,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies each year! “I had many back-to-back booth sales and walkabouts in neighborhoods every weekend, every free night with little homework, all my free time was just devoted to selling cookies,” recalled Zoe. “It took diligence, persistence, and the desire to reach my goals. When I received my award for being a top-seller, all those hours paid off.” Another bonus to being recognized as a top-seller is having the chance to go on the Girl Scout International Destination Trip. “I am using my cookie money to fund the ‘Swiss Challenge’ destination trip,” explained Zoe, who will be traveling to Switzerland with her fellow Girl Scouts this summer. Zoe admits that the perk of travel is great, but what she has truly loved about being a Girl Scout is learning invaluable life lessons. “There is honestly so much that one can benefit from Girl Scouts,” said Zoe. “It teaches independence, confidence, friendship, tenacity, open-mindedness, passion, resourcefulness, values, and inspiration to do big things. I believe all girls should take this wonderful opportunity to be a part of something so great.”

YO U R N E I G H B O R ’ S R E C I P E
INGREDIENTS 3 bell peppers (any color), halved and seeded ½ yellow onion, diced 1-2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup white quinoa 1 cups water ½ cup tomato sauce 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup of Mexican cheese blend, shredded ¼-½ cup olive or melted coconut oil Lime juice, to taste Salt, pepper, chili powder, and paprika to taste Optional Add-Ins: Corn Cherry tomatoes, quartered Jalapeño, seeded and diced
Optional Garnishes: Cilantro Avocado Lime wedges
DIRECTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
6. 7. 8. 9.
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Rub each bell pepper half with ½-1 tablespoon of olive or coconut oil, coating inside and outside completely. Place peppers on a foil-lined baking sheet and set aside. Heat approximately 2 tablespoons of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and sauté until onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add quinoa to the pan and stir once. Add water and tomato sauce. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Let simmer until quinoa is fully cooked. You can tell it’s done when you can see a small white ring around each grain and all liquid is absorbed. Add black beans, lime juice, spices, and any desired add-ins to taste and stir. While quinoa is cooking, bake bell peppers in the oven until they are a bit soft and oil is bubbling, 10 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle cheese into each bell pepper and spoon in quinoa mixture. Bake again for another 10 to 15 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of cooking, take the peppers out and sprinkle some more cheese on top of quinoa, then return to the oven. Take them out when the cheese on top is melted. Serve with another squeeze of lime juice and any desired garnishes. Enjoy!

ABOUT THE CHEF CHEF: Samantha Edwards PROFESSION: ZCode Media Editorial Assistant FAMILY MEMBERS: Mom – Shana; Dad – Larry; Sister – Sophie; Grandpa – Aaron; Boyfriend – Giovanni; Dog/child – Floyd HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Writing, baking, sipping wine, going to
baseball games, and taking Floyd on adventures ABOUT THE RECIPE: I have been a vegetarian for nearly 10 years and have found these peppers to be one of my favorite go-to meals. This recipe is relatively quick, healthy, versatile, easy to make for a group of friends or family, and delicious! I like to add LOTS of lime juice to the quinoa mixture, which, by the way, is also great as a salad base, as a side with another entrée, or just on its own, served hot or cold. If you have any left over, that is. ABOUT THE CHEF: I am a proud San Diegan who can’t get enough of this city! I love to try new restaurants and wineries, walk on the beach on a sunny day, and even just drive along the coast with the windows down and Floyd as my passenger.

The Warner Family Loves the Small-Town Lifestyle of Del Mar by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Soul of Photography
N
ative Californians Rob and Christine "Chris" Warner were happy to trade in their L.A. lifestyle for the small-town feel of Del Mar. From the kids’ local sports teams to beach and bluff walks, the Warner family has found the amenities, location, and lifestyle of Del Mar to be a perfect fit. Chris is originally from the Los Angeles area, and Rob grew up in Oakland. The couple met when they both worked at Children’s Hospital in L.A. Today, Rob is a pediatrician at Coast Pediatrics and Chris is a nurse in Labor and Delivery at Scripps Memorial Hospital. “Our unique connections to the community are through the kids of the area – beginning with the newborn babies,” Rob said.

Their decision to move to Del Mar was based on their young family. "We were attracted to the small-town neighborhood feel of Del Mar when we came for a visit and decided to move and raise our family here,” Chris shared. Their son Jackson is 10, and daughter Andie is 7. Both are students at Del Mar Hills Elementary. “Both kids are learning to play the piano and are active in soccer, baseball, and softball teams,” Chris shared. Rob lends a hand whenever he can with the various sports’ teams and has coached many of the kids’ soccer teams. The whole family prioritizes the active lifestyle. “Being in the medical profession, maintaining health and fitness is very important to us,” Rob said. Rob and Chris run half marathons, with their favorite race being the La Jolla Half Marathon every April. The kids join them for the shorter distances. “Now that our kids are able, they run 5K runs with us. They’ve done the Carmel Valley Fun Run the last two years.” As a family, they also enjoy traveling. Rob and Chris are committed to providing diverse experiences for Jackson and Andie. “One way we do this is through travel – our vacation highlight so far was a trip to Alaska with a whale watching experience that we’ll never forget,” Rob said. From local races to long-distance travel, the Warner family has settled into the Del Mar lifestyle. “There is a sense of community here that we didn’t have in Los Angeles.” Not only has this family taken advantage of all that Del Mar has to offer, they are also giving back to the community every day through their medical careers and community participation.

f Mary Reynolds had one wish, it would be for all of the world’s children to be healthy and safe. So, it’s no wonder that Mary pursues her passion of advocating for the health and well-being of kids by dedicating her time to Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary, an all-volunteer organization comprised of 800 members in 22 units scattered throughout the county. “Our mission is to advocate for, educate about, and raise funds for Rady Children’s Hospital,” Mary shared. “The auxiliary has been in existence since 1954 and has raised over $70 million dollars over the years. We have touched almost every corner of Rady Children’s.” Mary became a member of the Del Mar Unit of Rady Children’s Auxiliary over 10 years ago. “I worked within my unit, holding positions like event chair and unit chair,” recalled Mary. Today, she sits on the board of directors as president, overseeing all 22 units of the organization. “I am so proud of the commitment, dedication, and hard work of all of our members,” said Mary. “It’s a dynamic group that raises about $2 million per year.” With a year and a half left in her term, Mary is proud of all that she and the other members have already accomplished. “Initiating the new position on our board of leadership development director, we have worked to provide training to our volunteers in leadership, fund raising, and public relations,” described Mary. “I’ve also worked to take a one-day event, Kids’ News Day, and work with incredibly talented women and turn that one day into a week of giving.” This “week of giving” will come next January during the organization’s 2nd Annual Fill The Bucket campaign. “Our first year was a smashing success and I have no doubt it will be a major event in San Diego in the coming years,” stated Mary. Much like the Fill The Bucket Week of Giving event, the upcoming Tee Up for Rady event, a golf tournament at Fairbanks Country Club on June 12, is an auxiliary-wide event. However, each of the 22 units also host their own annual event. The Del Mar Unit will host their event on April 27 at Dolce at the Highlands. Hat’s Off to Children is a luncheon fashion show featuring fashions by TRE. Tickets are available at www.rchadelmar.org. Mary admits that most of her time is spent volunteering but when she has downtime, she likes to cook and travel with her husband Jim. “I have been married to my husband Jim for almost 40 years,” shared Mary. “We have two wonderful adult children and are very proud of their accomplishments.” Mary also enjoys her bunco and book clubs and going to the gym. But no other activity seems to fulfill quite like volunteering for Rady Children’s. “We are extremely lucky to have one of the highest ranking children’s hospitals in the world right here in our backyard,” said Mary. “Rady Children’s is leading the way in research and care for any child who needs healthcare services, whether they can afford it or not. NCL SAN DIEGUITO HOLDS ANNUAL WALTZ DINNER TO HONOR SENIORS
M
embers of the 2017 class of the National Charity League (NCL) San Dieguito Chapter, along with their parents and escorts, celebrated their Waltz Dinner earlier this year. In preparation for their Senior Recognition, the girls, called Ticktockers, and their fathers and escorts enjoyed a waltz dancing lesson. Fathers made heartwarming toasts to their daughters and wives in recognition of their NCL journeys, and the evening concluded with the Ticktockers sharing letters they had written to their mothers aloud in front of the entire audience. “What poise and courage and confidence the girls demonstrated!” said grade level advisor and senior parent Marie Morse. The Waltz Dinner is a special tradition for the NCL senior class and a prelude to the chapter’s combined event in the spring. Founded in 1925, NCL is the premier mother-daughter organization of women and their daughters in seventh through 12th grade. The six-year

Blending Heritage & Lifestyle Daniela Balzano Connects Her Culinary Passion With Her Gluten-Free Lifestyle by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Soul of Photography
A
fter an international move and a life-changing diagnosis, Daniela Balzano has found her home in Solana Beach and her calling in the kitchen. Daniela graduated from college in Rome, Italy and originally worked as a child psychiatrist, specializing in working with premature babies and their families. “I helped the parents walk through this emotional and stressful experience, helping them to ‘meet’ their child,” she explained. After seven years, she moved to Paris, France and a “new chapter” began. In Paris, Daniela was inspired by the art museums and patisseries (pastry shops). “I fell in love with the art of the French pastry and decided to consecrate part of my life to becoming a pastry chef,” she shared. “I grew up in southern Italy, where food and cooking are an integral part of life.” Four years ago, Daniela moved to Solana Beach and saw the opportunity to marry her Italian cooking heritage with the art of the French pastry by founding an intimate cooking school, Atmosfera Cucina. She hosts cooking classes “in a quiet and elegant kitchen, balancing between the Italian taste and the French flair,” Daniela explained. Soon after, though, she was diagnosed with celiac disease and restricted to a diet without wheat. “I lost an essential part of my heritage, an antique language I spoke perfectly well made of traditions and flavors,” she acknowledged. “Discovering the disease, I felt mute.” Daniela made the commitment to learn everything she could about celiac disease and the gluten-free lifestyle. With her strong culinary foundation, she educated herself, her husband, and their three daughters, but she thought about those without her expertise. “How would they even switch to a restricted diet the way I did in a healthy way?” she wondered. “Naturally, Atmosfera Cucina became a gluten-free cooking school, even if some of the classes can be a mix between gluten and gluten-free menu, as I do every day for my family!” Today, Daniela enjoys the tastes, conversations, and connections she makes in the kitchen and with her family. Between creating new menus, teaching cooking classes, playing the piano, and spending time with her daughters, Daniela has found the balance of all her worlds. “Italian people say ‘at the table, you never get older.’ I would say at a table, you can never be happier with good food, family, and friends.” Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies: Favorite Spots in Del Sol:

COMMUNITY STUFF
Ashley Falls Students Design School Garden
Students from Ashley Falls Elementary School participated in a competition to create an appealing and space- and cost-effective garden to be built at the school this year. The students worked in groups of two to three and were given a budget of $2,000. They researched garden ideas, designed a map, calculated the total cost, and added their own creative touches to their design. Each class chose its top two or three best gardens, which were then presented to school staff at a meeting. The staff chose a winning garden and then further challenged the students to work together to come up with an even better garden using all the ideas that stood out in the presentations. The winning team was awarded the title “garden directors” and were the ones making all the final decisions for the newly formed garden group. There will be a community clean-out day and building day in the coming months to put the final plans into practice.
Health Heroes Awards in Solana Beach Ten local physicians were recognized for their pro bono services at the Champions for Health Annual Health Heroes Awards at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club in late March. The awards reception followed a golf and tennis tournament benefitting Champions for Health’s flagship program, Project Access San Diego (PASD). “Our physician volunteers are critical to our ability to serve more than 800 uninsured patients in San Diego County each year,” said Champions for Health CEO Barbara Mandel. “The specialized skill and time these physicians generously donate has led to many San Diegans regaining their health, returning to work, and being able to once again take care of their families.” Kevin Yoo, MD, received the Above & Beyond Award for his lifesaving brain/spine surgeries for 12 PASD patients. The eight physician partners of IGO Medical Group received the Health Champion Award for their dedication to caring for more than 80 female PASD patients with chronic gynecologic issues. Longtime volunteer, board member, and first PASD medical community liaison Rosemarie Marshall Johnson, MD, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The San Diego County Fair’s Plant*Grow*Eat program teaches elementary school students about the connection between agriculture and nutrition. After planting their seeds, watering, weeding their plants, and watching their garden grow, even kindergartners now understand where their food comes from. After growing their plants, students are bussed to the fair to see how their entries fared during judging. Asked to reveal the secret of their first-place lettuce medley, 2016 winners Arturo and Emily confided, “Extra water. When our plants looked dry, we gave them a little more.” Last year, the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsored 73 buses (typically, $300 per bus) that enabled students from low-income schools to participate in Plant*Grow*Eat. Bus sponsors receive publicity, bus signage, and an opportunity to meet and accompany the sponsored students to the judging area. Sponsors can also serve as a judge. The Foundation is currently looking for additional sponsors for Plant*Grow*Eat in order to keep this program flourishing for future generations. End the Homework Battle Therapeutic Literacy Center’s Summer Programs Help Students Reach Their Full Potential photos by Soul of Photography
I
s your child average to above average intelligence but not reaching their potential? Is your child taking too much time doing homework that should take only a few minutes? This can be changed. There are solutions. This summer is the time to make that happen before repeating the same pattern next school year. “When a child is of average to above average intelligence, yet learning is difficult or homework is a battlefield, then there may be an unidentified weakness in one or more of the underlying learning skills,” stated Maria Bagby, Executive Director of the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC), an organization renowned for its intensive therapeutic approach to fixing learning problems. “That can change. We do that every day.” “Just doing more of the same hasn’t worked. Schools and tutors are trained to work at the upper levels of the continuum (see graphic). Yet, if a child is having any kind of a struggle, it may be that the underlying skills are weak. When these are strengthened, students can be successful, independent, and joyful learners.” Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) does much more than literacy. They have become renowned for the results they get with fixing the challenges related to ADHD, auditory processing deficits, executive function as well as reading and writing

skills. These problems don’t fix themselves. How does it work? TLC plans everything they do to meet each individual need through one-on-one therapeutic programming and through small group offerings when appropriate. Why not take advantage of the summer months to change the patterns of last year? Students can raise themselves to grade level reading, master their math facts and improve their handwriting and writing skills. These skills are necessary, not only for success in the increasingly complexity of the Common Core curriculum, but also for life! As one parent said, “My child no longer feels like he is at the back of the class. His confidence has improved and so has our home life!” Use this summer to change your child’s future.

Mathnasium summer programs are designed to address summer learning loss or the “summer slide.” All teaching takes place at the center – no extra homework. Trained instructors will help your kids retain what they learned in math class this year, so they’re well equipped for a strong start in the fall. When math makes sense, kids excel – whether they need to catch up or want to get ahead! Learn more at www.mathnasium.com/ carmelvalley. Call today to schedule a free assessment and trial.

MOBILE TECH SUMMER CAMP A
fter Dr. Korey Sewell enrolled his son in an afterschool Lego technology program, he quickly realized a critical piece was missing – campers were consuming basic technology, rather than designing it or being empowered to create their own. Soon thereafter, Hands-On Technology Education’s Mobile Tech Summer Camp was born. “Our camp is the first of its kind to successfully design a cohesive Mobile Technology program with an emphasis on both the theoretical and practical applications of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering for rising third through sixth grade students,” Dr. Sewell explained as the Executive Director and Director of Curriculum Design for HOTE. Two-week sessions offered from June 26 to Aug. 4 in Carmel Valley, Serra Mesa, and La Jolla provide students with an exciting curriculum that challenges and inspires each camper tailored to their experience levels. In either the Introduction or the Intermediate Mobile Technology sessions, children create cool projects involving tablets, Android apps, coding with Arduino, electrical circuits, and video games. FUNdamental engagement is essential – and present every day with outdoor activities, Mobile Tech Olympics, Career Days with local engineers and programmers, and field trips to San Diego’s Fab Lab, San Diego’s MakerPlace, and more. Looking for the content provided in Mobile Tech Summer Camp without the two-week summer commitments? HOTE has got your needs covered every month! Sign up for HOTE workshops like “Robot Programming” at the City Heights Library or “Electronics for Kids” at the Standley Recreation Center. HOTE is committed to remaining San Diego’s County’s premier technology education source for rising third through sixth graders. Mobile Technology programs empower and inspire technology built by youth who are gaining access and confidence to compete in a high tech world before entering high school. Attack Player Development Camps have been developed for ambitious players who are committed in their development to the dynamic ballpossession style of the modern game. The themes throughout the week include improving ball mastery, possession with purpose to attack, creativity in the final third, goal scoring, defensive intensity, and maintaining a composed but aggressive mindset. The player will leave the camp with enhanced fundamental technique and improved game intelligence, and will be inspired to play with greater confidence. Campers should come ready to work with like-minded, highlevel players and a desire to improve their game. These camps run for four days, typically in the morning from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. All Attack camps are conducted by Director of Coaching Malcolm Tovey and the Attack professional staff of coaches. Are You Thinking of Selling Your Home? by DAN CONWAY
I
f so, get it on the market now! You will be pleasantly surprised. San Diego’s inventory is at a historic low, and buyer interest is at a historic high! The market here in San Diego has clearly shifted again. Currently, it’s a seller’s market, which in simplest terms means a market in which more people want to buy than sell. In the sweet spot of pricing range, $850,000 to $1,400,00, there are less than 30 active homes for sale in Carmel Valley. Carmel Valley is in a better situation than most of San Diego because there are a few new home developments for sale. However, current homeowners are worried about selling since the inventory is extremely low and because of the tight market. In the Carmel Valley real estate market, sellers are getting multiple offers on their property listings and even some offers way above asking price. Even with mortgage rates creeping up a bit, bidding wars are happening and buyers are getting more aggressive.
Nevertheless, sellers in Carmel Valley are a little bit reluctant to put their homes on the market; they’re worried they won’t find anything comparable to what they have now and the prices they’re seeing are continually rising. We, Dan Conway & Associates, have seen a number of our sellers recently writing in listings that the sale of their property is contingent on them finding suitable housing to move into. In general, the cycle needs inventory to keep it moving along. Without it, a stalemate takes place. Dan Conway & Associates and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty are so very “now.” They are relevant, head and shoulders above current advertising standards, and dedicated to customer service. The team is located in the Piazza Carmel shopping center at 3860 Valley Centre Dr. Suite 409, San Diego 92130; stop by the office, which is next to Vons, for all your real estate needs.

Speak for the Trees
RESEARCH SHOWS INVASIVE INSECT IS HEADING TO SAN DIEGO COUNTY
I
t is no secret that San Diegans are quite partial to the palm tree. It lines beaches, sidewalks, and residences throughout the county. This is why it can be concerning to know that they’re under threat. According to studies by UC Riverside Director of Center for Invasive Species Research Mark Hoddle, the South American palm weevil has been making its way up the coast and San Diego palm trees have not been immune to its destruction. The fast-moving insect was first discovered in San Ysidro last year, and based on many trappings, researchers are noticing it making its way throughout Southern California. The invasive species, native to Mexico and Central and South America, infests the crown of palm trees – both native and imported – and causes significant damage that results in
the crown of the palm dying. This leads to the inability to produce new fronds, causing death to the tree entirely. The weevil is known to have expensive taste, feeding on some of the most expensive ornamental palms used in landscapes. A fully grown Canary Island date palm, for example, can be worth as much as a new car. Therefore, property owners are encouraged by pest control experts to safeguard their investments and protect their trees. In addition to Canary Island date palms, the South American palm weevil is known to attack coconut palms, date palms, and the king sago palm. For more information on how to effectively prevent the weevil’s destruction to residential and commercial properties, see Corky Pest Control’s ad on the back page of Del Sol Magazine.

AN AFTERNOON
BY THE SEA
Discover Seaport Village + The Headquarters This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
I
f your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a lazy stroll along cobblestone pathways winding in and out of view of the Big Bay, ice cream cone in hand, while drenched in the warm Southern California sunshine, there’s a good chance we know where your head is at: Seaport Village. This 14-acre waterfront stretch is home to over 45 diverse shops, 17 eateries, and regular entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, free outdoor concerts on Sundays, and an old-fashioned carousel – open 365 days a year. Seaport is also host to several fun events throughout the year, like the Busker Festival in the spring and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series in the warmer months. Though sometimes characterized as a tourist destination, San Diego’s Seaport Village is ideal for visitors and locals alike. And with the recent restoration of the adjoining Old Police Headquarters (now simply called “The Headquarters”), Seaport is the perfect blend of old and new. With restaurants, specialty boutiques, and even a fully restored eight-cell jail block surrounding a central plaza, The Headquarters gives new life to what was once the central location for all police operations from 1939 to the late '80s. The Headquarters hosts a number of events throughout the year as well, such as paired food and drink tastings, pizza making classes, Salsa Under the Stars dance night, and the CincoTeca Dos fiesta. Last year the Port of San Diego launched a major redevelopment effort for Seaport Village, a move that remains controversial, in order to revitalize the area and bring in more revenue. Proposed plans include turning Seaport into a mixed-use commercial development, retaining fishing facilities, adding a hotel, and creating a better connection to the heart of downtown San Diego. The Headquarters space would not be affected. The project has not yet been approved, however, and construction would not likely begin for at least a few more years, so you still have plenty of time to get down there and experience a beautiful day at Seaport Village!

Rats transmit disease. Protect your family from hantavirus, murine typhus and rat-bite fever. San Diego coastal communities are plagued with rats. Long-term rat control is your best defense. Rats can spread diseases to humans directly through feces, urine, saliva or bites and indirectly through their ticks, mites and fleas. Rat control is necessary to stop rats from nesting on your property and finding their way inside your home. An adult rat can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter. Corky’s expert rodent specialists identify rat entry points and can perform the work to keep the rats out of your home.
Rat control that really works.
Protect your family and home from rats with ongoing rat control. Corky’s innovative rat control program was specifically designed for controlling and exterminating rats in Southern California. While on our plan, we guarantee to control invading rats.
