Del Sol’s 1st Annual REALTOR® Guide
I
like things that you can touch. If I can’t touch it, I at least like to be able to see it. It should come as no surprise to the people that know me that my world revolves around building things. Whether it is creating magazines, overseeing the launch of a website, starting and growing companies, remodeling a home or office space, or building a house from the ground up – I’m all in! Seeing the final product that wouldn’t exist otherwise is very rewarding. Even as a child, I would find simple pleasure in drawing floor plans of homes. In my mind, I was actually building those houses – or I was going to build them when I grew up. Although more than a few of my house designs didn’t contain some of the bare essentials that adults are accustomed to – like closets and storage areas – they certainly had amazing game rooms, huge garages, and bathtubs the size of small swimming pools. As it turns out, perhaps my 10-year-old imagination was onto something. Note to self: Revisit original concept of amazing game room (aka man cave) and huge garage (aka my favorite part of a house). We’ll table the bathtub discussion for a later time. You can definitely touch real estate. For nearly a decade in the early 2000s, I owned a real estate and mortgage company that had 97 licensed agents at its peak. Building a company from scratch to a team of 113 (counting the support personnel) was an incredible experience to say the least. I developed a profound respect for the real estate industry along the journey while overseeing thousands Derrick Breaux of transactions. I am still very close to many of the incredible professionals that Publisher made up our team. Simply put, I respect what REALTORS® do and how hard they work for their clients and the community. I value the many steps that take place during a real estate transaction. This issue of Del Sol Magazine contains a very special 1st Annual REALTOR® Guide (see page 41). To be honest, I can’t believe we didn’t do this special issue sooner. There are many elements that go into building a community, and active local real estate professionals are definitely one of the key components. They are often a part of the community themselves, walking their kids to school or sitting next to us at soccer games. Many of them sponsor school programs and donate time and money to local charities and organizations. But perhaps the most important thing is that they are working with us on what is considered to be the single largest investment of our life – buying or selling our homes. While we often see the faces of our local REALTOR® celebrities in the pages of this magazine, on the real estate signs around town, on the ballpark fences, or even on the shopping carts watching us as we make the dreadful decision to go with paper or plastic, I wanted to take it one step further. Real estate is definitely hyper-local, and this REALTOR® Guide gives you a glimpse into the individual movers and shakers of our local real estate industry. The intention of the REALTOR® Guide is to create a personal introduction to the actual person – not just the REALTOR® – that dedicates their career to overseeing our local real estate market. I hope that you enjoy getting to know your REALTORS®. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses. They are constantly working in front of and behind the scenes to keep their fingers on the real estate market pulse and see that our communities continue to move forward.

arol Ann Ashley Birtwell is a woman of many talents, from singing and entertaining to working with children and writing. This Renaissance woman, who goes by her middle name of Ashley, recently published a children’s book entitled Freddie and Bibelle. This book tells the tale of an unlikely friendship between a frog and butterfly. To Ashley, butterflies symbolize the process of transformation and frogs represent leaping through life with joy. “I always wanted to write a book about a frog and a butterfly. Last September, after returning from a wedding in Nantucket, the book finally just seemed to write itself,” explained Ashley. Once the story was written, Ashley found an illustrator who brought her words to life. Although she and the illustrator have never met face-to-face, Ashley feels that this pairing was a match made in heaven. “She would just read my mind as to what I wanted on every page. I love her magical illustrations,” shared Ashley. In addition to being an author, Ashley is also a Kindermusik educator, holding classes throughout North San Diego County. Kindermusik is a music and movement program for newborns through children four years of age. “Growing up with so many siblings – I am one of seven – gave me a

true love of family and children. It was the beginning of my work with young children and their families. Through Kindermusik I can combine my love of entertaining, singing, music, and writing with my love of children,” related Ashley, who also offers birthday party packages for children and does voiceover work for various clients. A truly creative soul, Ashley finds her inspiration from animals, children, music, and the natural world. “I draw a lot of inspiration from getting and experiencing the wonders of nature: animals, flowers, trees – all of these things are very inspirational for me,” related Ashley. She also believes in the power of movement and encourages all budding writers to get up and get moving if they feel stuck or are suffering from writer’s block. In 2010, Ashley followed her son, Dakoda, to the San Diego area before settling in Solana Beach. Through Kindermusik, the publication of Freddie and Bibelle, and her participation in many local events, Ashley has become an integral part of the community. She is looking forward to sharing with Del Sol – and the world – an audio CD of Freddie and Bibelle, as well as more books about their adventures.

T
he Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation awarded 20 North County Teens the Leonard & Edith Polster Scholarships. The awards were presented during a celebratory dinner for the students at the Hilton Del Mar. Students from Oceanside High School, Sunset High School, El Camino High School, San Dieguito Academy, La Costa Canyon High School, Torrey Pines High Shool, and Carlsbad High School were awarded for their academic achievement. In order to be eligible for the scholarships, applicants had to be full-time students and were required to submit recommendations, a personal essay, and transcripts. Forty percent of consideration for the award was based on financial need. The purpose of the scholarship is to award money to deserving students who might not have the means to attend college due to financial constraints, but who show determination for pursuing higher education. The foundation aimed to give preference to applicants in North San Diego County high schools who intend to go to a California public university, community college, or vocational school. The Polster Family established their scholarship program in 1986 to give something
back to the community. To date, over 600 students have received financial support totaling over $700,000, which was donated entirely by the Polster Foundation. For more information on the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation visit their website at www.bgcsandieguito.org/home/foundation.

n honor of National Child Abuse Prevention month, nearly 300 food enthusiasts and passionate community members gathered to attend Casa de Amparo’s 19th Annual Meet the Chefs at the Hilton Del Mar. The popular fundraiser gathered over $125,000 for Casa de Amparo’s programs that treat and prevent child abuse and neglect throughout San Diego County. During the poolside event guests had the opportunity to sample food from 15 premier restaurants. Guests also enjoyed premium wines and beers, and had the opportunity to participate in silent and live auctions. This year four of Casa de Amparo’s former foster youth worked alongside chefs to share their passion in the culinary arts. “I love cooking for guests! It’s my coping skill and is very calming to me. I really have to focus and maintain a positive attitude to cook great food,” said PJay, a 19-year-old Casa Kid.

NCL combines teams and provides them with the opportunity to serve in their community. “National Charity League has been an extremely rewarding experience for me,” Holly said. “I’ve grown so much closer to my mom while doing charity work with her through the league. NCL has taught me humility and gratefulness for all that I have.” She completed a whopping 221 hours of volunteer work during her six years with the program, earning her The Merci Award from The Santa Fe Christian School for having completed the most hours of service out of anyone in her senior class. The Autism Tree Project Foundation (ATPF) is Holly’s favorite philanthropy, where the NCL girls serve as mentors to girls in the San Diego area who’ve been diagnosed with autism. ATPF coordinates over 16 free programs and services aimed at improving girls’ confidence and social communications. Holly organizes activities such as art camps, beach walks, spa days, and dances – a rare variety of activities for girls on the autism spectrum. “The art camp was my favorite activity because the girls can’t always express themselves through words,” Holly shared, “so they learned how to express their feelings and emotions through art.” Holly plans on Holly’s favorite subjects in school attending Pepperdine are art, Bible, government, and history, University, where she’d where she is encouraged by art like to study to be a teacher Mrs. Farrington, Bible teacher pediatrician before Mr. Lyons, and government teacher Miss Ruge. Name of Chef: Jenelle Zingg Family: Husband – Tim Fleming; Dog – Guinness; Baby boy due in September! Community of Residence: Cardiff-by-the-Sea Hobbies: Travel, swimming, hiking, salsa dancing, discovering new restaurants, spending time with family and friends, and (most recently) nesting Favorite Local Activity: Body surfing About the Recipe: I love this recipe because it’s sweet, easy to make, and healthy. Most often I make it for my husband and me. If we have family or friends stop by in the morning, it’s my go-to. About the Chef: Breakfast has always been my favorite meal because I grew up in the Midwest running a bed and breakfast with my mom and sister. The breakfasts we served were often Belgian waffles with strawberries and fresh whipped cream, scrambled eggs and sausage, or German pancakes with fresh lemon and powdered sugar. Now I only make the German pancakes on special occasions. I seem to have adopted the health-focused Southern California lifestyle with the exception of some recent trips to local French bakeries for a chocolate croissant and caffè mocha! I love the way that food brings people together.
Reduce, Reuse, Upcycle LOCAL BUSINESS WOMAN ENCOURAGES SUSTAINABILITY IN THE COMMUNITY
D
el Mar resident Zelda Waxenberg has spent a lifetime supporting environmental responsibility through philanthropy. Recently, she has even taken on a new business endeavor that utilizes upcycling to maintain sustainability called Bottles & Wood. “Upcycling is taking recycling to a new level,” explained Zelda. “We can see something special in discarded items and use the material to create a totally different product. Upcycling keeps trash out of the landfill and the ocean.” In an effort to help educate her community on the importance of reducing your carbon footprint, Zelda shared some sustainability tips with Del Sol Magazine. Zelda explained that living sustainably is an ongoing effort to take care of our homes, communities, and planet – and the first step is to realize that our actions affect the world around us. Communities can be environmentally conscious by using upcycled signage and décor in their events
and encouraging participants to recycle and clean up their trash. To create a more sustainable home, always think about what you are throwing away and if sending it to a landfill is the best way to dispose of it. Glass bottles can become vases, bottle gardens, or a means of creating wall décor. Instead of throwing out branches you cut from your trees, consider using them for sculptures in your garden or making them into compost. If it’s time to get rid of old T-shirts, keep in mind that they can be made into quilts or other upcycled items. They also can be donated instead of thrown out. “I was amazed to learn that T-shirts are a significant percentage of our landfills,” said Zelda. “Giving unused items to the Goodwill and other charities is an important part of upcycling.” Zelda’s upcycling factory and showroom are open to the public to generate a new discussion about sustainability. Tired of Feeling Tired? TRY THESE TIPS TO INCREASE YOUR ENERGY If you’re tired of feeling like a sluggish sloth, try these tips for fighting fatigue and energizing your battery. Our everyday habits play a powerful role in how we function throughout the day. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration zaps your energy levels and is one of the main causes of fatigue. Always drink when you are thirsty and always have water available. Foods that naturally contain water include yogurt, carrots, and juicy fruits such as watermelon. Eat nutritiously. Include protein, fruits and vegetables, complex carbohydrates, and polyunsaturated fats in your diet. Some people may benefit from eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day to help maintain their blood sugar levels. Nibble on nuts and seeds such as almonds, sunflower seeds, and Brazil nuts, which can provide sustained energy. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grain crackers can give you quick energy without the fluctuations in blood sugar. Take a digital break. Take a break from checking your phone or the internet all the time. While technology is useful and fun, it can also be distracting and create a sense of false urgency. In addition, the visual fatigue caused by staring at a digital screen for hours at a time can cause headaches, tired eyes,

difficulty concentrating, and neck or back pain. Obesity and irregular sleep have also been linked to too much screen time. Exercise regularly. Even a 10-minute walk will increase your energy and boost your mood. Physical activity improves the working efficiency of your heart, lungs, and muscles, which can give you more energy overall. Yoga, swimming, walking, and biking are good low-impact workouts. Get outside. Sunlight and vitamin D are an energizing duo that can also generate optimism. Be sure to layer on the sunscreen so you don’t get too much of a good thing. Turn on the tunes. Listening to music can decrease tension, increase energy, and distract you from feeling fatigue. Listen to your favorites when you need a pick-me-up. Go to bed. Getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining energy throughout your day. If the alarm blasts you out of bed each day, you are not getting enough sleep. If you have late-night food cravings, that usually means you’re sleepy, not hungry. Smile. Smiling makes people happy – you and those around you. Choosing to genuinely smile – not fake smile – can help you relax, which contributes to good energy and a stronger immune system.
John Dawkins, M.D., is a family medicine physician at Scripps Clinic in Del Mar. Dr. Dawkins has special expertise in preventive and sports medicine, as well as dermatology. The activities that make him smile include foreign travel and outdoor pastimes such as surfing, fishing, swimming, and marine biology.

ourteen years ago, Francine Garton opened The Royal Dance Academy (RDA) in Carmel Valley. The dance studio was wildly popular, providing dance education to over 3,000 students with endless waitlists and three expansions of the facility. In 2014, when Francine realized that she needed to expand yet again, she took the opportunity to make her lifelong dream of opening a performing arts academy become a reality; and, thus, Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) was built. RAPA, located on Sorrento Valley Road, is a 15,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, offering its students six dance studios, an acting studio, three musical studios, and a yoga/ Pilates/gyrotonic studio. “There is a spacious parent waiting area with four large TV monitors to watch classes, a large homework room and tutor room, and a juice bar/café area serving healthy ‘beaming’ products,” added Francine. RAPA was created to cater to all programs offered by RDA and its facility can accommodate elite dancers, recreational dancers, competition teams, recitals, ballet exams, acting workshops, and singing recitals. “It’s a beautiful, modern, high-tech space that will stimulate a child’s love for the arts,” described Francine. “Our mission is to help provide excellent training
for all dancers, irrespective of their level and age, providing a comprehensive program for all who love the arts and always striving to provide the best of the best teachers to develop and challenge the students.” Francine credits much of the success of the studios to RAPA’s teaching staff, which consists of professional dancers and choreographers. “Our staff are master teachers and have the resumes to support their reputations,” said Francine. “Our teachers love to teach and nurture their students. Our philosophy is to make a positive difference to each and every child who comes to our studio.” It is her staff, Francine explained, that have helped her create a professional, vibrant, welcoming environment and family-like community. “Students call it their second home and love being there,” she shared. “A true testimonial for what we are about is seeing the extreme progress that the students make in a short amount of time. Some students are unrecognizable from the student they were months earlier. This is a true teaching skill to achieve this success and makes me immensely proud.” As for her future business goals, Francine added, “to establish RAPA as a truly successful performing arts center that continues to develop and nurture children’s love for dance and the arts.”

EDUCATION FOUNDATIONS BRIDGE THE GAP IN SCHOOL FUNDS photos by Soul of Photography
E
ducation foundations such as Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMSEF) and Solana Beach Schools Foundation (SBSF) are nonprofit organizations that exist to help provide funding for STREAM classes and other programs that are vital to education but are not funded by the State of California. The foundations are comprised primarily of parent volunteers and board members who put the needs of their respective
school districts first. Without them these vital classes and programs would not exist as they do today. We speak with the presidents of each foundation to learn more about their mission to provide educational opportunities for students by funding programs that make a lasting impact. 34 • DelSolMagazine.com • July | August 2015

Q&A
Del Mar Schools Education Foundation President Ty Humes with
What is the motivation behind the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation? The motivation behind the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMSEF) is to provide the funding of the compensation packages for the STREAM+, formerly known as Extended Studies Curriculum, program’s specialists for all eight schools in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD). What is the mission of DMSEF? The overall mission of the DMSEF is to provide ongoing support for the STREAM+ initiative that reflects the DMUSD’s commitment to the education and development of the whole child. Our district’s goal is that all students have the opportunity to develop their individuality and learn to communicate their thinking while developing an understanding of the world around them. How do you go about following that mission? We go about following that mission through the creation and subsequent execution of a comprehensive parent-driven and community-assisted fundraising program. Please explain the importance of STREAM+ for students. The DMSEF and the DMUSD have implemented a new program that is called STREAM+. The STREAM+ programs are science, technology, research, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. The plus sign symbolizes how the program is inclusive of music, physical education, and enrichment programs. These programs are extremely important because of our district’s utilization of teachers who are credentialed specialists that work in conjunction with classroom teachers to enhance the core curriculum and provide students with opportunities to learn through exploration, experimentation, and creativity. Through our STREAM+ programs, students develop problem solving skills, practice teamwork, and gain exposure to the fine arts above and beyond the classroom experience. The STREAM+ program is the perfect combination of conceptually based hands-on instruction with opportunities for learning extended beyond the classroom. How can someone who wants to help be a part of the foundation? There are two primary avenues for those interested to provide support. First is that at any time, a contribution is welcome and can be made directly to the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation. Second is to become a board member. Each of the eight schools has at least
36 • DelSolMagazine.com • July | August 2015
two board members representing and thus voting on behalf of their respective schools. All board members have to have a child enrolled in the district – thus, we are all parent volunteers. Why is it important for communities to have foundations such as DMSEF? It is very important for communities to have foundations such as DMSEF because of the structure and current state of the public school educational foundation and funding in the State of California. First, the DMUSD is a Basic Aid District, which directly allows for the DMSEF to assist in the funding of the curriculum. Second, any and all assistance that the Basic Aid Districts provide allows for the State to provide more resources for the districts not fortunate enough to enjoy the committed parental stewardship and fiscal support that we have in the DMUSD. What is most exciting about being a part of the foundation? The most exciting part of the foundation is the opportunity to educate the parents on the unique role that they have in ensuring a first-class education for their children in a public school. Tell us about your board of directors. How do they help keep the foundation running? The board members are all parent volunteers who currently have children in the school district. Each school has at least two board members, thus receiving two votes within the board infrastructure. Unlike some foundation boards, the DMSEF does not have any paid directors. The directors representing their respective schools are charged with managing the communication and execution of their campus events while working in conjunction with the collective district message. Does your foundation hold fundraisers throughout the year? The DMSEF does hold fundraisers throughout the school year (September to May). Each school has its own legacy and campusspecific fundraisers. An example of this would be seven of the eight schools having jog-a-thons and one having a pajama jam. Also, one of our schools does a parking spot auction which raises over $3,000 per parking spot. The DMSEF now also holds two district-wide fundraisers. What are your long-term and short-term goals for DMSEF? Our long-term goal for the DMSEF is to maintain a fundraising level of $1.5 million per year from parental contributions and $500,000 per year from our business partnerships for a total of $2 million per year. The short-term goals are for maximum participation per school in the continued development of all campus-specific fundraising events.
How has DMSEF evolved over the years? Over the years the DMSEF has evolved from an organization that did not consistently educate DMUSD parents on its role and importance. This led to not only minimum participation in terms of the number of families contributing, but also a challenge in recruiting and maintaining directors for the board across all eight campuses. That being said, the parents who did contribute consistently did a Herculean job. We have been able to augment this foundation not only in terms of financial support but also family participation. Today we have 70% of families contributing. We have also implemented a business partnership program that is now in its second year and growing steadily, as well as a full board of directors, with three schools at one time having three directors each. What are you looking forward to the most about this upcoming year In regard to the upcoming year, I am looking forward to three things the most. First is the implementation and excitement around the STREAM+ program and the opportunity for us to augment our fundraising initiatives around this paradigm shift for our children’s stellar education. Second is the continued growth and impact of our business partnership program and its role in raising funds for STREAM+. Third is the pleasure of working with a board of directors which will have over 60% new directors who have very young children in the school system. This will allow for us to re-establish the legacies on each campus that made our foundation one of the best. We are losing some of the best directors that ever existed on our board, or any board for that matter, and the opportunity to bring in the new directors at this time is crucial.

Q&A
Solana Beach Schools Foundation President Jackie Teague with
What is the history and motivation behind the Solana Beach Schools Foundation? The Solana Beach Schools Foundation (SBSF) was established in 1986 to raise funds to support and enhance the education of students in the Solana Beach School District (SBSD). At that time there was – and continues to be – a gap in what public funds pay for and the full cost of providing the educational opportunities we want students in our district to have. What is the mission of SBSF? The mission of SBSF is to raise funds to bridge the gap between vital school needs and State funding to enrich the public education of all students in the SBSD. How do you go about holding true to that mission? SBSF raises funds to help pay for instructional staff, materials, and equipment for discovery labs at our schools. Donations allow students to receive hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, research, engineering, art, and math (STREAM), as well as supplemental instruction in physical education. The foundation serves all seven schools in the district: Carmel Creek, Skyline, Solana Highlands, Solana Pacific, Solana Ranch, Solana Santa Fe, and Solana Vista elementary schools. How can members of the community get involved and help? There are three key ways to help: contribute to SBSF, volunteer at the school or district levels, and learn about who SBSF is and what we do and share that information with fellow parents, friends, neighbors, and members of the community. Contribute: Every year parents generously donate to our Annual Fund Drive and to fundraisers held at their schools. Businesses and community members also actively support foundation efforts at individual schools and district-wide in our focus areas of STREAM and supplemental P.E. We have a number of business donors who participate in our Partners in Education (PIE) program. Volunteer: It’s critical to foundation success! Parents, grandparents, and community members generously volunteer their time to assist instructors in discovery labs at the schools, to plan and host fundraising events, and to serve on the SBSF board and its committees. Get the word out: When people volunteer they learn more about SBSF and its value to the district and our students. Then they share their excitement with family and friends. This often translates into more volunteers, more contributions for the foundation, and increased interest in getting involved with the board and with our schools.

Why is it important for communities to have foundations such as SBSF? Each community is different. We have different strengths, challenges, and priorities. However, we have a common interest – giving our children the best chance at a bright future in which they can fully participate in and contribute to society. Education foundations serve as a vehicle for parents and community members to advance that common interest in ways that reflect the community’s goals and vision. Education foundations give parents and community members a forum for sharing their hopes and ideas for the future of education – and students – in their communities. Education foundations also give parents and community members an opportunity to engage with and learn about one another, which hopefully helps to build trust, understanding, and compassion among us. What is most exciting about being a part of the foundation? It’s hard to choose the best aspect of being a part of the foundation! Perhaps it’s that we get to partner with the district and support them in making truly great things happen for our kids. It is fantastic to get to know others in the community who are kindred spirits but who one might not otherwise have met had it not been for this common interest. Being a part of the foundation affords one the chance to work with a group of people from diverse backgrounds and learn from them. Can you highlight any upcoming significant dates? When students return to school at the end of August, a new year begins for them and for us at foundation. The district will be introducing new components of its STREAM initiative and we’ll be right in there fundraising to ensure that the schools have what they need to implement them fully. Later in the fall, Skyline and Solana Vista Elementary schools will host the annual Halloween Carnival, a huge tradition in that community that has been going on for more than 40 years. The carnival, as always, is open to all. It is a wonderful family event! Tell us about your board of directors. How do they help keep the foundation running? Our board members hail from a variety of professional backgrounds and bring a breadth and depth of skills and experience to the table. As a board, our primary responsibility is fiduciary. In addition, individual board members have special roles. Every school is represented by a team of two site presidents who oversee fundraising at their schools. Site presidents manage the Annual Fund Drive and are supported by event chairs for other SBSF fundraising events.
Our members-at-large serve in a variety of capacities. They head up and serve on board committees, participate in school district task forces, and provide advice on numerous topics as needed. Our executive committee, which includes SBSF Executive Director Patti Malmuth, oversees SBSF business and studies issues facing the foundation to present to the full board for discussion. The full board meets every other month during the school year. Lastly, as a full board we establish and execute a strategic plan, which is developed with both district priorities and SBSF mission and scope in mind. Does SBSF hold fundraisers throughout the year? Our most important fundraiser of the year is the Annual Fund Drive, which runs from September through January each school year. Each school holds one or two additional fundraisers throughout the year. Some schools host fun runs. What are your long-term and short-term goals for SBSF? I strive to maintain and build SBSF’s positive partnership with the SBSD. I would like to see the foundation continue to focus support on the school district’s STREAM initiative. I also look forward to working on expanding our donor base and exploring special projects and opportunities with major donors. Perhaps most importantly, I would really like to broaden our volunteer base to ensure that all parts of our incredibly diverse school community are represented and that all voices and ideas are heard. How has SBSF evolved over the years? The foundation has been around for a long time. As with many organizations, it began with a small group of parents who saw funding gaps and knew the only way to fill them was to step up and start something. Over the years, the small group became more organized. Policies and procedures were put in place to safeguard the integrity and long-term well-being of the organization as a 501(c)(3). A few years ago we hired Executive Director Patti Malmuth, who demonstrates her depth of knowledge about education and nonprofit management in every conversation, every suggestion, and every decision. When Solana Ranch Elementary opened its doors in 2014, it elected to establish a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), which we brought under our umbrella.

What are you looking forward to the most in the upcoming year? I am really looking forward to seeing what our students will be learning and experiencing through the STREAM initiative. As we head into year two of STREAM schools have incredible plans to revamp discovery lab spaces and bring new curriculum units to students at all grade levels. SBSF is also proud to help fund the district’s new, full-time STREAM Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSAs) at each school. The STREAM TOSAs will coordinate STREAM at each site, teach classes, and help develop curriculum for the Next Generation Science Standards. How can people go about finding out more information about the foundation? I encourage people to visit our newly redesigned website, www.solanabeachkids.org, which has loads of information about the SBSF. Patti Malmuth and I are also happy to answer questions. We can be reached at the foundation’s office. Is there anything else you would like to add? I may be biased, but I think our local schools are the most valuable community resource we have and we are all invested in them whether or not we currently have children in the school system. It is important for us all to understand the challenges, priorities, and opportunities our schools are tasked with managing and to be supportive of their efforts. When schools and students succeed, we all benefit.

VOICES for CHILDREN Del Mar Volunteer Linda Woolcott is a Reliable, Steady Presence for Children in Need by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Soul of Photography
A
s a young girl, Linda Woolcott was shy and quiet. She was raised by a close family in Indiana; she and her two sisters (one was an identical twin) were watched over by parents from front porches and spent summers at a lake cottage in Michigan. As an adult she pursued much more extroverted occupations, teaching high school English and then practicing law. “That I ended up as a teacher and then a lawyer would not have been predicted by anyone who knew me in my youth,” Linda laughed. Linda started looking for ways to help the community. “I read an article in the newspaper about the struggles of foster children who move from home to home,” she explained, “many times separated from siblings, or who ‘age out’ of the system without a family or adults to help them after they turn 18.” The article spurred her in to becoming a CASA, a Court Appointed Special Advocate through Voices for Children, helping children in foster care navigate through the system. Though she is now semi-retired, Linda was able to be a CASA even while practicing law full time because a CASA volunteer generally works only 10 to 15 hours a month. “Right away I knew that any support I could give would be welcome for a child who needed a caring adult to listen, support, and advocate for them.” If she could grant Voices for Children one wish, she would give them the ability to provide a CASA for every foster child in need of one. She feels a great sense of accomplishment in her work with Voices for Children. “I have been a reliable, supportive, helpful, and steady presence in the lives of my case children and their families, most of whom have known only chaos and abandonment.” Del Mar, to Linda, is one of the most beautiful places in the world. She and her husband Warren spend time hiking the trails of North and South Torrey Pines and enjoying the farmer’s markets in Del Mar and Solana Beach. They love to travel, but lately their time spent on airplanes is to get to sons Tyler and Spencer, who live with their wives in London and Amsterdam. “I also get a lot of satisfaction from cooking,” Linda confided, “and like nothing more than gathering friends and family around the table to sample my creations and enjoy each other’s company."

“We are writing to express our pleasure with our real estate agent Connie Sundstrom, who represented us in our recent purchase of a vacation/second home in San Diego. Connie guided us through the entire process, from loan pre-qualification to searching for a home, to negotiating the offer and closing the deal. We credit Connie with a smooth, stress-free home-buying experience. Connie communicated with us by phone, in person, and by E-mail each step of the way. The entire transaction Connie was organized, thorough, and we found her to be knowledgeable about the aspects of real estate that surpassed just the legalities of buying and selling properties. She was always pleasant and expedient in returning our calls. We never could have found our dream vacation home without her. We are so pleased with Connie’s service and her expertise and will highly recommend her to anyone looking for a highly effective and reliable real estate agent. – Nazih and Malak, San Diego

TIPS FOR P E V
R SKIN TH OU
Know Your Sunscreen Apply sunscreen to your face, ears, neck, arms, and any other areas not covered by clothing, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day – a good rule of use is one ounce every two hours. Be sure to read the label before you pick one out. Broad spectrum sunscreens – those that protect against both UVA and UVB rays – with a SPF of at least 30 are a good place to start, though higher SPFs provide more protection for longer. Always follow directions on the label and check for expiration dates. Most
1
sunscreens are good for up to two to three years.
2
Wear Proper Clothing Clothing can provide different levels of sun protection, depending on the fabric, color, and of course, how much skin is being covered. Dark colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants are the most protective, and tightly-woven fabrics are best. If you hold the clothing up and can see light through the fabric, you’re still getting some UV exposure.

ith the arrival of the official season of beach days and backyard barbeques, it’s likely that you’ll be spending a lot more time outside for the next few months. While you’re putting on your swimsuit or bringing out the coolers and lawn chairs, it can be easy to forget to take the necessary steps to avoid the harmful effects of the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, which is why we’ve put together a few simple tips on how to safeguard yourself and your family this summer.
3
Head for the Shade Avoiding too much direct sunlight is simple but important, especially during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when UV light is strongest. UV rays can reach below the water’s surface, so you can still get a burn while relaxing in the pool – and don’t forget that sun protection is necessary even on cloudy days. Protect Your Eyes, Too! Wearing a hat and sunglasses can help protect your vision, as well as cover up sensitive areas
4
that are difficult to protect with sunscreen, such as the scalp, ears, or delicate skin around the eyes. Choose a widebrimmed hat with at least two to three inches of tightly-woven fabric all the way around and a dark, non-reflective underside. Large-framed or wraparound style sunglasses are best for covering your eyes from light coming in from different angles. Before you buy check for labels that say “UV 400 protection” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” as these indicate that the sunglasses will block 99-percent of UV rays.
5
Use the UV Index Before you head out for a day in the sun, check the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website for the UV Index. The index represents the intensity of the UV rays of the sun on a scale of one to 11 to help you decide how much UV protection you’ll need for your outdoor adventure. The National Weather Service calculates the UV Index forecast daily and the EPA publishes the information, along with other recommendations for sun protection and planning sun-safe outdoor activities at www2.epa.gov/sunwise.

Annual SPARK Gala LOCAL COUPLE HELPS IGNITE THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
S
an Diego community members, physicians, and cancer survivors came together to “ignite the fight against cancer” at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center’s 34th Annual Gala – also known as the SPARK Gala. The gala was cochaired by 92067 residents Wanda and Cam Garner, who know firsthand how destructive cancer can be. Four generations of Cam’s family have been affected by various forms of cancer, which is why the local husband and wife worked hard to make SPARK a night to remember. SPARK was held at the Grand Del Mar and provided an opportunity for the community to recognize the advances made in the fight against cancer. A cocktail reception, dinner, auction, and special performance by actress and singer
Megan Hilty – who made her Broadway debut as Glinda in Wicked – were provided for guests throughout the evening. The gala garnered more than $2 million and all proceeds benefited research and patient care at the Moores Cancer Center. Funds will also help the center to launch a new Cancer Immunotherapy Program. Part of the UCSD health system, Moores Cancer Center is one of just 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country – and the only one in the San Diego region. This year marks their 10th anniversary. “We want to be sure that San Diego has a world-class cancer center, with the best doctors and researchers, so that no one here needs to leave in order to receive the highest quality of care,” shared Cam.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Get Away to the Great Outdoors at San Diego's Beautiful Campgrounds by LAINEY KRAL
W
hether you’re complete camping novices or grizzled outdoor experts, San Diego campgrounds can be the perfect weekend destination. Pack up your car, trailer, or motor home and head out for a taste of the great outdoors. An hour east of San Diego, Lake Morena County Park is a blend of coastal, desert, and mountain terrain. Ten cabins and 86 hook-up, partial hook-up, and tent sites mean there’s a perfect campsite for any family. The Morena Reservoir is open to personal canoes and kayaks, and motorized boats are available to rent for fishing and cruising. The famous Pacific Crest Trail passes near a select number of campsites. Bonita’s Sweetwater Summit Regional Park welcomes motor homes, trailers, and tent campers alike to 112 campsites in the 500-acre park. The 15 miles of trails are open to bikers, hikers, and horseback riders – some of the campsites include corrals so equine visitors can stay the night as well. Kick back and spend the afternoon fishing at Sweetwater Reservoir, then get dinner ready at one of the picnic pavilions.
William Heise County Park offers 103 campsites, almost 11 miles of multi-use trails, and 14 cabins with internet access for those who want to stay connected in comfort. Look out for mule deer and wild turkeys among the pines and oaks. The park is 4,200 feet above sea level near the historic gold rush town of Julian – head into the city during the day to visit the Pioneer Museum or pick up one of the famous local pies. Be sure to make reservations early and stay updated on current campfire and water use regulations. Remember to check the projected weather at your destination before you finalize your packing list. Learn more or check out other campgrounds at www.sandiegocounty.gov/parks/camping.
The S'More the Merrier Standard s’mores are delicious, but sometimes it’s fun to go beyond the traditional marshmallow, chocolate bar, and graham cracker sandwich. Whether you're making them over the campfire or in your fireplace, try a few of these ideas to get some more out of your s’mores! • • • • • •
Add sliced bananas or strawberries Add peanut butter or caramel sauce Use Nutella instead of chocolate Experiment with different kinds of candy bars Use cookies instead of graham crackers Try chocolate marshmallows and chocolate graham crackers

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
5 Critical Tips for Selecting the Perfect Real Estate Agent by FELICITY HUNTER
I
5. Hire Someone You Feel Good About. A big part of hiring a real estate agent is going with your gut. You should never pick an agent who has a great sales record and looks stellar on paper but rubs you the wrong way.
f now is the right time for you to buy or sell, you’ll want to pick the perfect real estate agent for you. Here are five crucial tips for making the right choice. 1. Hire a Knowledgeable Agent. A knowledgeable agent is one who not only knows the transaction process and can answer any questions you may have but is also someone who knows their local market.
There are many agents doing business in the San Diego market. Make sure you interview as many agents as it takes until you find your perfect match!
2. Speak to Past Clients. The people who know a real estate agent best are the people that have hired them. If the agent doesn’t provide you with a list of referrals, ask for one. Call a few people from the list and ask them about their overall experience. 3. Select a Tech-Savvy Agent. Recent studies indicate that 90% of homebuyers found their next home online. If you’re hiring an agent to sell your home, you want to know that they’ll be able to put your home where the buyers are: online.

4. Pick an Agent Who Communicates. You want an agent that is responsive and easy to get in touch with. This is not only for your sake but for the potential buyers of your home.

Excellence in Teaching UCSD PROFESSORS AND DEL MAR RESIDENTS AWARDED FOR SUCCESS
S
ix UC San Diego faculty members were recently honored for excellence in teaching, two of the honorees being Del Mar residents James Hamilton and Roger Reynolds. James was honored for his excellence in research in humanities and social sciences. Roger was awarded for excellence in the performing and visual arts. After being nominated as candidates by their academic peers, both UCSD professors were selected as honorees by a committee comprised of the Chancellor’s Associates donors, a group that gives an annual leadership gift to the university. Criteria for the selection were based on each professor’s achievements, reputation, and impact on students and the academic community.
James is an internationally recognized, groundbreaking scholar in econometrics and macroeconomics, lauded for the breadth and impact of
Roger Reynolds
his contributions in business cycles, monetary policy, oil prices, exchange rates, and government debt. A Pulitzer Prize-winning composer,
James Hamilton
Roger maintains a high level of research on composers, aesthetics, and creativity while producing boundary-crossing musical works that embrace new technologies and transform tradition. As a mentor, he has had an impact on students by challenging them to find their own voices. James and Roger were awarded at an annual ceremony that celebrated the accomplishments of UC San Diego faculty as a whole, while highlighting the important contributions of the university’s most exemplary teachers and researchers. The Chancellor’s Associates ultimately recognized the outstanding accomplishments of university faculty members with a citation and $2,500 award.
