Associate Editors can’t believe we are thinking about summer already! Where does the time go? I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a little overwhelming. Two or more months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, last year we brought you the 1st Annual Summer Camp Guide. We had no idea of how popular it was going to be. This year, I am proud to present the 2nd Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 34). It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in the magazine! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher
Camp Stories From The ZCode Team “I was lucky enough to attend a four-day football camp when I was a kid. We stayed in dormitories, ran cool training drills, watched football tapes, and made some great friends along the way. It was an awesome experience!” – Derrick, Publisher
“Leaving the classroom for the dance studio was always one of my favorite things about summer. I remember attending ballet and tap dance camps, and loving every minute! Summer camp activities are a great way to energize yourself and get active.” – Randi, Associate Editor
“One of my best camp memories was with the YMCA. It was held in Balboa Park. I have memories of shooting bow and arrows and learning lots about different cultures. I saw how they made teepees and learned traditional dances. It was a lot of fun.” – Jessica, Director of Business Development

C r e at i v e S p i r i t As an Author, Artist, and Tennis Champ, Sally Huss is a Woman of Many Talents by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Soul of Photography
F
rom a conversation with a local child to sharing a meal with friends, Sally Huss finds inspiration for children’s books everywhere she turns. Filled with rhymes and vibrant illustrations, her books are created to not only foster a love of reading, but also to help children as they grow and experience the world, and are available both as eBooks and in soft cover. “The most rewarding thing about publishing books is the smile it brings to a child who is reading the story. It is my belief that children need help these days to understand and practice the important things in life, the basic virtues. By learning to share, make friends, and help others, they will be well on their way to a positive and meaningful life,” related Sally. Although she began writing long before her career as an artist, Sally spent many years focusing on creating art and opened 26 independent galleries across the country, plus one in Switzerland and another in Tokyo. “During this time, I kept putting writing off as a career, throwing stories and story ideas into a drawer under my drawing table,” said Sally with a laugh. In addition to her creative abilities, Sally has a passion for the sport of tennis. She was the top junior at age 18, winning in the women’s division at both the U.S. and Wimbledon Junior Championships. “In my day, there was no money in the sport so when I graduated from USC with a degree in fine arts, I went to work. I worked in the television and film industries and then

in the music industry, running Paul Simon’s music publishing company,” stated Sally. She eventually went back to the sport of tennis, touring, and reaching the top 20 in the world at age 32. “Through a type of dance work, I learned to play tennis in a relaxed and powerful way. I wrote a book about this method and taught this special ‘Zen’ type of tennis to many interesting people, such as Joel Gray, Barbra Streisand, and Larry Hagman,” revealed Sally, who also developed and ran a large tennis and health club in Aspen, CO, with her husband. When they moved to San Diego, Sally began playing senior tennis competitively. Although she has put down her competitive racket, Sally still plays tennis several times a week and is a member of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club ladies league team.

Scanning the Horizon Torrey Pines High Senior Louisa Nickerson Places Her Passion in All the Right Places by LYDIA COBB | photo by Soul of Photography
P
eople who make positive impacts inspire Louisa Nickerson. She’s a senior at Torrey Pines High School and is active in her school, church, and community. Louisa’s biggest hobby is running but she “loves being outside and in the ocean.” When she was eight years old she attended her first Del Mar Junior Lifeguards program. “I loved it so much, and was so inspired by my instructors, that I made it my goal to someday become a lifeguard,” reflected Louisa. She was awarded Most Outstanding Junior Lifeguard in her group for five out of six years. Louisa interned as a lifeguard at age 15 for two summers and by 17 she joined the City of Del Mar as a student lifeguard. This distinction was unique. Louisa was one of two girls invited to the Lifeguard Academy with 80 hours of intensive training. She elaborated, “I worked almost full-time throughout the summer and continue to work sometimes on the weekends in winter.”

During the recent winter break, Louisa traveled to Australia through a cultural lifeguard exchange program organized by Vince Askey of the Del Mar Bodysurfing Club. The students stayed with host families who made the visit more meaningful, according to Louisa. They learned about Australian lifeguarding and surfed the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. “We became honorary members of the Coolum Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and earned our surf rescue certificates to become official Australian surf lifesavers,” she added. On land, Louisa is the captain of both the cross country and track teams at school. In addition, one of her favorite parts about this year is her internship at a local preschool. She’s also the president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a peer leader of the Best Buddies Club, which fosters friendships among disabled and nondisabled students. Her family attends St. Peter’s Episcopal, where Louisa was “I WAS SO INSPIRED BY MY and where she’s INSTRUCTORS THAT I MADE baptized, giving back through church IT MY GOAL TO SOMEDAY youth leadership. As for what's next, Louisa BECOME A LIFEGUARD.” has her eye on Pepperdine University, Cal Poly, or UC Berkeley in pursuit of her interests in childhood development and business. Her dream is to be a teacher and own and run a preschool. Above all, she’s committed to her faith, and added, “I know that God has provided me with countless blessing and opportunities.” She’s using her gifts as a role model for positive living.

cups of oatmeal cups of flour teaspoons of baking soda teaspoons of baking powder teaspoon of salt teaspoon of cardamom spice teaspoon of cinnamon teaspoon of nutmeg cups of butter (4 sticks) cups of sugar cups of brown sugar large eggs teaspoons of vanilla ounces of chocolate chips (I use Nestles) 8-ounce dark chocolate bar, grated or cut up in bite-size pieces
Directions 1. 2.

Take out butter from fridge to let soften. Mix oatmeal in blender until mostly finely ground. Empty oatmeal grounds into a bowl, then add the flour, baking soda and powder, salt, cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir until well blended. Set aside. To a different bowl, add the butter, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, chocolate chips, and chocolate bar pieces. Stir well until blended. Merge both bowls into one and mix. Be sure to mix thoroughly as the flour tends to go to the bottom of the bowl. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Overnight is fine. This makes all the difference! Roll into 1-inch balls and place 2-inches apart on cookie sheet or (for best results) on a round pizza stone. If using a stone, don’t put oil on it. Preheat oven and bake at 375 degrees F for 10 minutes. Check them. Depending on oven, they usually are light golden brown at 10 to 13 minutes. I put mine on the lowest rung in the oven. Let cool for at least five minutes before taking off the sheet or stone. Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes to prep; 45 minutes to bake Makes: 96 cookies

Name of Chef: Carol Ann Ashley Birtwell Family: Son Dakoda (27) Community: I live in Solana Beach. I teach Ashley’s Musikids at the Encinitas Community Center. Hobbies & Interests: Dancing, singing, family time at the ocean, loving animals, cooking, being outdoors. Love family, friends, wind chimes, flowers, plants, and traveling. Favorite Local Activity: Dancing the night away at Club M at the Grand Del Mar Hotel and catching up with my son at our whole foods restaurant. About the Recipe: I created this recipe through the years as I was never totally happy with any other recipes. I don’t eat many sweets but have always had a soft spot for cookies. Everybody loves cookies! Well, I tend to make it for my family, friends, music classes, and people I don’t even know, as the people I do know beg me to make it for others. I chose it because it is the most asked-for recipe that I make! Plus, it is fun to make and get all the compliments. If you have little ones and you are going on an airplane, it really helps to have some of these cookies to give out to the people around you ahead of time, especially if your little one is teething. Everyone will love you! About the Chef: I have been an educator of children for over 18 years. I’ve written two children’s books that are on Amazon: Freddie and Bibelle ~ An Extraordinary Encounter, and my second book is Freddie and Bibelle ~ The Big Feather Drum.

rian and Jane Coffin have resided in Solana Beach for more than 17 years. “We love it because it’s beautiful, near the beach, and has a small community feel, as well as fun restaurants and shops,” shared Jane, who, together with Brian and their two teenage daughters, Phoebe and Leah, feels that Solana Beach is the ideal community. “It’s near two of our passions – the water and horses,” explained Jane. “It’s great because we have the ocean in our backyard. It’s also just a short drive to amazing equestrian facilities where our daughter trains, shows, and has kept her pony over the years.” Between the four of them, the Coffin family stays active. Brian, who is a Senior Vice President Portfolio Manager at Morgan Stanley, located in Rancho Santa Fe (where he has worked for the past 21 years), is an avid surfer. “Brian surfs on a daily basis,” said Jane. Five Nutrition Myths Busted by CHRISTEN BENKE, D.O.; Scripps Clinic, Del Mar
Don’t let nutrition myths sabotage your health goals, whether those are losing weight, having more energy, or getting more exercise. Don’t eat after 8 p.m. The theory is that you burn up food you eat earlier in the day, while calories eaten at night sit in your system and turn into fat. In reality, calories can’t tell time, and your body uses calories the same way morning, noon, and night. If those late-night calories are not burned while you watch TV or sleep, they will be the next day once you start moving. That said, make sure you are not snacking late at night because you are tired and have mistaken fatigue for hunger. How much you eat and what you eat is far more important than when you eat it. If I exercise, I should take a protein supplement or protein shake. While it is true that when exercising, particularly at a high intensity, you need to make sure you
eat enough protein for your muscles to grow and repair, most people, even athletes, can get all the protein they need by eating sources of lean protein, such as meat, fish, chicken, and dairy products. In some specific instances, protein powders may be useful for an ordinary athlete, such as for a teenager who is growing, when you are recovering from an injury, when you are increasing your workouts (such as training for a half-marathon), or if you are going vegan. Be careful, though, as it doesn’t take much protein to achieve these goals and overloading can be hard on your kidneys and liver. A gluten-free diet is healthier. Unless you have a legitimate reason to eliminate gluten from your diet, such as celiac disease, you can eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. While gluten itself doesn’t offer special nutritional benefits, many whole grains that contain gluten do, so before eliminating gluten, get tested if you think you may have an issue.
Vegetarian and vegan diets are healthier. A vegetarian or vegan diet can certainly be healthy, but it depends on what foods are being eaten. Technically, eating a diet of cheese and chocolate would be vegetarian, but not healthy. Avoiding meat and dairy products eliminates the saturated fat and health issues from overeating fatty meats and high-fat dairy, but vegan and vegetarian diets are only healthier if you replace the meat and dairy with healthy alternatives. What is true of vegetarian and vegan diets is that they are generally environmentally friendly and more sustainable than a diet heavy in meat.
Sugar should not be in my diet. All types of sugar – including fructose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose – are broken down in our bodies into glucose, which our cells use for energy. Some of these sugars, such as fructose and lactose, occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, and other foods. But many of the foods we love contain added sugars, usually

to enhance flavor, and these added sugars have been cited as contributors to many health problems. The most common sources of added sugars include soft drinks, cakes, pies, fruit drinks, and chocolate. A rule of thumb is that sugar should always be accompanied by as many nutrients as possible, and added sugar should be avoided.

Full STEAM Ahead
DMUSD FAMILIES VISIT CAMPUSES TO LEARN ABOUT NEW LEARNING APPROACH
T
he Del Mar Unified School District (DUMSD) recently made a huge effort to introduce parents to STEAM+, their new approach of integrated learning. This method integrates traditional subject matter, allowing students the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired or are still developing to solve tasks that relate to relevant, realworld experiences. To help families develop a better understanding of their educational programs, DMUSD held the STEAM+ Premier Family Night across each of their school sites on one night. Families were able to interact with credentialed specialists and teachers to experience how their children are learning firsthand. At each school, teams prepared a host of different activities for families to participate in. Families were able to code video games to share with others, design and build small vehicles to learn about energy, and even fashion electric circuits from Play-Doh, batteries, and wire. Of her school’s experience that night, Carmel Del Mar School Principal Jessica Morales shared, “The first annual STEAM+ Family Night at Carmel Del Mar School exhibited one of those magical
nights where you see your school community come together to learn and have fun while doing so. As I left the night, I couldn’t help but feel proud of this event and how it energized our community about integrated learning.” STEAM+, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics, is made possible through the support of the district and the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMSEF). “STEAM+ Family Premier Night was such an auspicious occasion on two fronts!,” said DMSEF President Ty Humes. “First, it highlighted the brand new STEAM+ initiative that DMUSD has deployed this year, and its impact on the continued success of education in our district. Second, simultaneously, the district succeeded in bringing together all eight schools for one event at their respective campuses. It is such a great time to be a part of this district. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the Foundation during this time of celebration.” Learn more at www.dmusd.org. For more information on DMSEF visit www.dmsef.org.

ANTI-AGING DENTAL CARE Dr. Roya Mirkhan and Her Team Prioritize Individualized Patient Care at Advanced Dentistry and Implants at Scripps Del Mar in Carmel Valley by LIZ ONUFER | photo provided by Advanced Dental Implants
D
r. Roya Mirkhan has developed a solid reputation, earning the title of one of “America’s Top Dentists” by the Consumer Research Council of America for the past nine consecutive years. Alongside this well-deserved award, she has also been named one of San Diego’s Top Doctors and Dentists for years of exceptional work and success. Advanced Dentistry and Implants specializes in anti-aging dental treatment devoted to restoring and enhancing the natural beauty of your smile by using conservative, state of the art procedures that will result in beautiful, healthy, and long-lasting smiles. “Every smile we create is designed to enhance not just the mouth but the overall appearance of our patients,” explained Dr. Mirkhan. Restoring lost and missing teeth is another specialty area of the team. The all-in-one same day dental implant procedure, to replace one or more more missing teeth, takes place in a single appointment in one office, eliminating the need to go to multiple offices and through multiple phases of treatment. This is a great option that restores function and chewing ability while looking and feeling natural. The whitening and maintenance programs at Advanced Dentistry and Implants also help their patients maintain a youthful appearance. Dr. Mirkhan acknowledged, “It is so rewarding to see someone going from hiding their smile
to someone who has natural-looking teeth and shows their smile and can be happy.” Dr. Mirkhan’s commitment to her patients’ health and well-being is evident in her philosophy. “We cater to each patient based on their specific needs with attention to detail, creating natural smiles,” she stated. Even patients who have been told by other dentists that no solution was possible have found answers at Advanced Dentistry and Implants. From same day dental implants and full mouth rehabilitation to Invisalign clear braces for adults, Dr. Mirhkan and her team combine personalized care with experience and expertise. Dr. Mirkhan has served thousands of patients since 1998, when she established her private practice in San Diego. The central location at Scripps Medical Offices in Del Mar/ Carmel Valley, the long-term relationships, and the commitment to the highest standards in health and well-being of the patients has earned Advanced Dentistry and Implants top awards, and even more importantly, recognition from their patients. The testimonials on their website, www.lovemyteeth.com, offer the evidence from first-hand experiences at Advanced Dentistry and Implants. As one long-time patient Patrick D. acknowledged, “Her attention to detail, the thoroughness of the examination, coupled with

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Don Diego’s 30th Anniversary
Since it was founded in 1986 as a tribute to actor Tom Hernandez, the nonprofit Don Diego Scholarship Foundation has worked to preserve San Diego’s deep agricultural roots while bringing people together to support future generations of leaders in pursuit of their college career and goals. The foundation, which was established as a facet of the San Diego County Fair and the Del Mar Fairgrounds, originally provided scholarships on a modest scale. Over the years, thanks to an increasing pool of generous donors, Don Diego’s scholarships have increased from $1,000 to three students each to $44,000 shared between 14 students annually, with the most outstanding of students receiving $10,000. “We’re most proud of our 165 scholarship recipients, who have used the $572,500 in funding to pursue their college and career goals and give back to their community,” said Executive Director Chana Mannen. From Stanford to MIT to numerous state universities, scholarship recipients have carved out a national footprint of higher education. Proud Solana Beach resident Luciana Navarro Powell is the illustrator of the new children’s book Whose Hands Are These? A Community Helper Guessing Book. The book was written by Miranda Paul and incorporates rhymes and riddles to engage children and educate them about various occupations – from firefighters to construction workers to doctors. “This is a fantastic nonfiction resource for children to learn about community helpers,” said Luciana. “I just did a reading for all the kindergarteners at Solana Vista Elementary and they loved the guessing format, and got almost all of the riddles right.” Luciana, originally from Brazil, has been illustrating for over 16 years. Most of her work has consisted of illustrating text books, with Whose Hands Are These? being her first children’s book in the U.S. For more information about Luciana and her work visit www.lucianaillustration.com. Students Have Fun With Science
For the past 15 years, Solana Vista Elementary School has hosted Science Discovery Day for their students to learn about science with hands-on workshops and projects. This year, Science Discovery Day focused on incorporating the Solana Beach School District’s (SBSD) STREAM (Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Art, Math) learning method into the activities. Taylor Lynch, a teacher on special assignment for STREAM, worked with Mad Science of San Diego to coordinate over 28 workshops and two assemblies. “With the importance of STEM related fields in our community, we are continually looking at ways for kids to engage in STREAM,” said Taylor. “We hope that this love of learning builds and they will someday pursue a field in science, technology, research, engineering, art, or math.” As a district, SBSD has been dedicated to hosting two science nights per school for the 2015 and 2016 school year in order to connect students and families with science. Local Official Attends UN Conference
Solana Beach Deputy Mayor Peter Zahn recently represented his city at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, which was held in Paris. Representatives from government, industry, nonprofit groups, scientific organizations, finance, and many others came together to advocate for their positions. “Interesting presentations were made by John Kerry (who led the USA delegation), Bill McKibben, Al Gore, Tom Steyer, and Robert Redford,” said Peter. “Many U.S. Senators and governors, and foreign leaders brought great perspectives on pressing issues.” Peter volunteered to attend the conference as a members of the Natural Resources Defense Council, a New York City-based nonprofit international environmental advocacy group. At home in Solana Beach, Peter confirmed that the city officials are working on a Climate Action Plan, which will provide a roadmap to the city’s green house gas reductions. Local Nonprofit Elects New Chairman
Del Mar-based conservation organization, Nature and Culture International (NCI), has announced their new chairman of the board to be Encinitas resident David Welborn. David will be succeeding Del Mar resident Ivan Gayler, who founded NCI in 1996 and has led its efforts to protect millions of acres of endangered forests in Latin America. “While my title has changed, my commitment to saving endangered ecosystems and the people who call them home is unwavering,” said Ivan. “I will continue to stay active on the board, particularly in the role of attracting additional resources to the cause.” David Welborn is the former president of San Diego Coastkeeper. He and his wife Ann Hunter Welborn have served on NCI’s Board of Directors for the past 12 years and have been instrumental in funding NCI’s conservation work in Alamos, Mexico, where NCI owns and operates a 15,000-acre reserve that protects jaguars and other key species. Del Mar Pines School’s New Building
Del Mar Pines School, a leading private kindergarten through sixth grade school in Carmel Valley, has announced the completion of its new two-story building. A new building was a long time dream of school Director Marci McCord. With the help of the Del Mar Pines Foundation for Education, parents, alumni, and the Gallagher family, that dream came true. Funded and built in under a year, the vision for the new building was not to add more students but to offer current students more. “I am very excited about the new opportunities for learning and deeper exploration our students can now benefit from,” said Marci. The campus expansion created a new sixth grade classroom and library. It also made room for a dedicated science and Spanish lab and performing arts room. The school invites prospective families to an open house, campus tour, and breakfast with the school director on March 16. Call 858-481-5615 to RSVP. Learn more at www.delmarpines.com.
Record Breaking Glow Stick Chain
In Support of Girls Worldwide
The Grauer School recently hosted a screening of the documentary Girl Rising, put together by the school’s Girls Rising Club. The club asked for a donation of $5 to attend the screening. Their fundraising efforts turned out very successful, making $1,300 in proceeds from more than 70 attendees. All proceeds from the event went toward The Daraja Academy, an organization that empowers girls in Kenya. Girl Rising shines a spotlight on the transformative power of girls’ education. It is directed by Academy Award nominee Richard E. Robbins and narrated by figures such as Cate Blanchett, Selena Gomez, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, and Liam Neeson. “There is true hope for a world that embraces equality, and the next step could be trapped inside the mind of a girl who can’t afford an education,” said Cameron Payne, The Grauer School student and leader of the Girls Rising Club. Recently, 150 dads and daughters came together to build a 13,491-foot glow stick chain in hopes of breaking the world record, which is currently 6,301 feet. Everyone that participated is part of Coyote Nation, one of five princess adventure groups run by Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. The project took place at the YMCA Camp Marston in Julian. The campout was hosted by the Bobcat Tribe, one of 10 tribes that make up the Coyote Nation. The chain took an hour and a half and 10,150 glowsticks to complete. Data and evidence from their chain is currently under review by Guiness World Record, with an answer expected soon.”It was fun to see the whole nation of dads and daughters working together with excitement from being part of something big,” said Bobcat Tribe Co-Chief Chris Riddle. “It was also fun to tear it all apart later that night and have a glow stick party.”

It is definitely a uniquely GDT&M experience to grab a Sam Adams and stroll through our museum to see an authentic document signed by the man himself,” related John Lek, senior vice president and general manager. The 22,000-foot-venue also houses a private meeting and banquet facility, as well as a coffeehouse and bookstore. The restaurant’s exterior is an enhanced replica of the original Green Dragon Tavern in Boston’s North End, demolished in 1854, and the site of many secret meetings relating to historic events such as the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution. In fact, the original Green Dragon Tavern was referred to as the “Headquarters of the Revolution.” “Taverns were the epicenter of 18th century communities. We wanted to open an inviting venue that would provide value to our community and reconnect our guests with the essence of patriotism, freedom, duty, and innovation that led to the birth of our nation’s independence,” explained Lek. Through the nonprofit organization, Green Dragon Tavern Historical Foundation of California, a collection of primary source documents and antiques are displayed free of charge for guests to view. Although there is no obligation to dine at the GDT&M in order to visit the museum, according to Lek, the restaurant and event operation allow for the growth of the collection and programs of the museum. Although the GDT&M celebrates American colonial history, there is no shortage of modern conveniences and perks. Happy hour is offered Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m., and all day on Sunday. he Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) has the largest dance studio facility in San Diego at over 15,000 square feet, featuring five large dance studios, three singing and music recording studios, an acting studio, and a pilates studio. With all of these features, it’s no wonder they host a large variety of summer camp programs to choose from – ballet to acting to singing, and more. In addition to their popular year-round classes, RAPA hosts themed summer camps and intensives where dancers ages 3 to 18 can grow and explore the performing arts. The Triple Talent Camp is also offerered, combining acting, singing, and dance for those looking to pursue a career in the industry. Themed summer camps can range from four to five days depending on the dancer’s age group, with affordable half-day options available for as low as $150 for the entire camp. Depending on which theme they choose – some options include Disney, Princess, Grease, Hairspray, etc. – dancers can dress up, have tea parties, make crafts and costumes, and even have the opportunity to sing and act. For students looking to really challenge themselves this summer, intensives, such as the Bolshoi Ballet Intensive, Boot Camps, and Pure Technique Camps, provide the opportunity for students to excel along with speciality workshops and masterclasses with celebrity choreographers and teachers. “At RAPA, we have created a summer camp program to suit everyone’s needs, schedules, and affordability,” said Owner and Director Francine Garton. “Our students have so much fun, are inspired each and every day, make new friends, and grow in so many ways whether it is in technical ability, confidence, or just stepping out of their comfort zone.” RAPA’s programs are led by experienced teachers that nurture campers and go above and beyond to ensure each camp is structured around the children’s needs. Whether your child is a beginner looking to learn the basics, or more advanced with a desire to master technical skills, RAPA’s summer programs offer choices for everyone. THERAPEUTIC LITERACY CENTER
W
hile summer vacation offers ample time for students to run, play, and exercise their bodies, it also offers the perfect opportunity to exercise their minds. During the busy school year, students may not get the one-on-one time with a teacher or tutor nor the therapy to develop their underlying weaknesses in learning skills. This is where the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) comes in. While the center, located in Solana Beach, offers specialized training to students year-round, they utilize the extra time that summer affords by offering specialized camp programs to prepare children for success when school starts in the fall. Their summer programming includes an intensive therapy to overcome challenges and learning disabilities by focusing on underlying learning skills, as well as a learning “bootcamp” for children that are strong in their underlying skills but need work in the areas of math, handwriting, or keyboarding. All of TLC’s programs can help a student be successful in the Common Core curriculum. TLC’s summer programs include both group learning experiences and individualized one-on-one sessions, provided by specially trained clinicians. If a full-day program is chosen, the day may even include outings to a surf camp in Solana Beach or an activity at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. “A cognitive bootcamp mixed with hours of outdoor exercise is the perfect summer combination for children wanting to enter their next grade level with confidence in their success,” said Maria Bagby, TLC Executive Director. Because spaces fill up quickly, early registration is encouraged. To learn more about TLC and how they can help eliminate learning challenges in reading, writing, and math visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200.

Putting Others First Beverley Kinnear Loves Volunteering With the Beach & Country Guild by LINDA FRABL | photo by Soul of Photography
B
everley Kinnear, a Del Mar resident who has been a volunteer with the Beach & Country Guild for 30 years, loves helping out with the organization, which raises money for young people with cerebral palsy. Beverley is especially active in helping put together the Guild's largest annual fundraiser, Dia del Sol. The luncheon and fashion show donates its proceeds to the nonprofit, United Cerebral Palsy. This year’s luncheon gala will take place in October at the Grand Del Mar. Describing her joy in being involved with the Guild, Beverley commented, “Just knowing I help so many people who have so many needs, and knowing they could not get those needs fulfilled without a lot of help, feels really good.” Some of the tasks Beverley handles include collecting items for the luncheon’s silent and live auction, gathering large donations and sponsors, checking in guests at the event, and acting as the chair for new memberships.

In her earlier days as a volunteer with the Guild, when the Dia del Sol luncheon took place inside a host’s personal home, Beverley led the home tours, assisted with food preparation, and cleaned up afterwards. She recalled, “We cooked different things in the kitchen for up to 400 guests. After the event was over, we left everything as we found it for the owners.” As a mother to six children, a grandmother to seven grandchildren, and a great-grandmother to two children, Beverley has garnered a lot of experience overseeing the needs of her large family. She revealed, “I was married to a naval aviator and we moved our family about every three years. Sometimes I had to handle tasks by myself when my husband was off fighting wars from an aircraft carrier. It was a busy life for over 40 years.” During those years, Beverley was also a teacher and an artist. She still dabbles in watercolor painting, and also enjoys playing mahjong and tennis when time allows. Beverley especially adores being a member of the Beach & Country Guild, honing her management skills and ensuring that young children with cerebral palsy are properly attended to. She added, “My fellow co-workers and I have become such good friends, and it is fun to work together to accomplish our goals.”

Cathedral Catholic High School Continues a Strong Legacy of Faith, Character, and Achievement by LAINEY KRAL | photos provided by Cathedral Catholic High School
C
athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for over 50 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 10 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 80 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified to uphold that legacy. Most teachers have a master’s degree or higher in the subject they teach, and the entire staff strives to model the values of a Catholic faith community. The school is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and holds membership with the College Board. “In partnership with parents,
we form an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence,” said Principal Mr. Kevin Calkins. “It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing journey of personal and spiritual growth.” Over 1,600 students are currently beginning that journey on the dynamic CCHS campus. Facilities include 75 classrooms, 12 science labs, two computer labs, a robotics lab, a ceramics studio, a music room, a lecture hall, several special-use classrooms, world-class athletic facilities, a library, a lecture hall, a chapel and meditation garden – there’s a place for every student to discover their passion. Over 70 percent of CCHS students participate in one or more of the school’s 80-plus teams. “Whether you are an athlete, love to act, or have a passion for serving others, at Cathedral Catholic you gain the confidence to make a difference not only in your life but in the world around you,” said Kate, a student in the Class of 2017. Nicole, a recent graduate, agreed: “There is an unparalleled wealth of opportunities, and a strong support system in the students and faculty as part of the Catholic community.”

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
2016 Real Estate Began with a Bang! I
n my previous article I wrote that the real estate market would continue to flourish. I’ll pat myself on the back – it’s beginning to explode! We already seen a healthy growth in home sales and pricing as an indication the marketplace is stable. Distress sales will no longer be playing a role, new construction is returning to more traditional levels, and prices will rise at a more consistent rate with a more balanced market. Millennials emerged as a dominant force in 2015. This pattern will continue in 2016 as their large numbers combined with improving personal financial conditions will enable enough buyers between ages 25 and 34 to move the market. The majority of those buyers will be first-timers, but that will require other generations to also play larger roles. Those from Generation X are
in their prime earning years and able to relocate to better neighborhoods for their families. Baby boomers approaching retirement are seeking to downsize and lock in a lower cost of living. We should see a strong growth in new home sales and single-family construction as builders offer more affordable product. Buyers of all ages should consider new homes, but availability will be highly dependent on location, particularly in the desirable coastal areas. I told you mortgage rates would go up sometime in 2015, and they did. However, they also went back down. The level of increase has been manageable, even though higher rates will drive monthly payments higher along with debtto-income ratios increasing. Rent is accelerating at a more rapid pace than home prices. I’ve seen asking rent on

vacant units increase at a double-digit pace in the second half of this year. More than 85% of U.S. markets have rents that exceed 30% of the income of renting households. This trend does not bode well for the health of the housing market. It will improve when construction of affordable rentals as well as more of a pathway for renters to become homeowners. STARGAZING IN SAN DIEGO
These Breathtaking Views Will Have You Seeing Stars – Literally by SHYANNE LOPEZ
B
eing surrounded by beaches, beautiful landscapes, and a sprawling city, it's no wonder we tend to keep our eyes focused on what is laid out right in front of us. While known for its sunny and clear skies, come sunset, parts of San Diego's skyline are anything but empty – you just have to look up. For years, the area has attracted professional and amateur astronomers and stargazers alike for the highly accessible view of not just stars but also our own galaxy and nearby planets. In fact, this spring, Mars will be the largest and most clear that it's been in more than a decade. It's the perfect occasion to bring out your inner astronomer. While it's tough to stargaze in highly developed areas, you can view them with ease at various rural locations in and around the county that have remained virtually untouched by city lights. So, if you're interested in catching a glimpse of the cosmos this spring, jump in your car and check out one – or all – of these unique destinations.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Two hours east of San Diego, you can find California's largest state park. The desert is a hot spot for professional and amateur stargazers due to its seclusion from urban lights. In fact, the park's neighboring town of Borrego Springs was designated in 2009 as the second "Dark Sky Community" in the world by the International Sky Association, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the nighttime environment.
Tierra Del Sol
Julian
Located in southeastern San Diego County is the Tierra Del Sol observing site. Established by the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA), the site is home to monthly star parties that are open to the public. Star parties offer visitors the opportunity to observe the sky through professional telescopes, and receive guided viewings from experienced astronomers. Learn more at www.sdaa.org.
Primarily known for its apple orchards, this quaint mountain town actually has night skies dark enough to host the SDAA's annual Julian StarFest each summer. This spring, you can admire and explore their starry skies by checking out nearby campgrounds or parks. If you don't feel like roughing it, the town also boasts its own astronomy-themed bed and breakfast.

Torrey Pines State Reserve While you won't see as many stars from Torrey Pines State Reserve, just north of La Jolla, it offers darker skies than expected and doesn't require a road trip. The beach offers the perfect location to look up at the cosmos, complete with the sound of crashing waves. Torrey Pines stays open until 11 p.m., and since it won't be peak visiting hours, catching road-side parking should be a cinch.
