FROM THE PUBLISHER VOL. 6, NO. 3 TM

‘Tis the Season of Family Traditions

N

ow that our holiday decorations are down and we are charging into 2019, I thought I’d take a moment to look back at the recent holiday season. Somewhere along the way, I got the reputation in my family as being somewhat of a bah humbug during the holidays. My wife and children are quick to point out my lack of interest in holiday decorating and gift wrapping. But the reality is that I absolutely love the holidays – especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. And even though I may act like hunting for that perfect tree does not interest me, it’s just an act (but I think my family may be on to me since I really love everything about it). So, I’ll have to continue complaining a little in order to keep up the façade. The fact is that I love the tradition that the holidays bring. I love the buildup, the preparation, and the anticipation of the upcoming holidays. Life can bring a lot of changes, but one thing that has been important to my wife and me is continuing the family tradition. And having everyone together warms our hearts. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any of the other holidays that we celebrate, everyone in the family knows where we are going to be and who will be there. They look forward to it, and they expect it. As crazy as it sounds, we know what food will be served and who will prepare each dish (for each holiday). It works this way. It’s our family tradition. And although Southern California winter holidays may entail swimsuits and sunscreen instead of bulky coats, I wouldn’t change a thing – nor would they. So, if you hear me whining about decorating the Christmas tree or hanging lights around the house, just know that it’s all part of an act (sort of my own unconventional tradition). But let’s be sure to keep this as our little secret. I don’t want my wife and kids to Derrick Breaux know that I’m really a softy when it comes to the holidays. If Publisher they knew the truth, I’d have to do a lot more decorating and wear one of those silly holiday hats (sorry, that’s not gonna happen!). Now that the holidays have come and gone, I’m truly looking forward to what 2019 has to offer. I didn’t make any specific resolutions this year, but I have large ambitions for 2019. My motto for 2019 is “make it happen.”

VICKIE BARKS IS ENJOYING EXPLORING THE NEXT CHAPTER OF HER LIFE by LINDA FRABL | photo by Soul of Photography

V

ickie Barks, who has lived in Del Mar Hills since 2002, is committed to enjoying her lovely surroundings with her family. Vickie commented, “I love the slower pace and the natural beauty here, but that it’s still near Los Angeles and downtown San Diego. It’s the best of both worlds!” Vickie recently left her position as the executive director at the nonprofit organization The League of Amazing Programmers in order to explore the next chapter of her life. While working at the League, Vickie helped grow the lone computer school into a well-regarded social enterprise with multiple campuses. Now that she is a free agent in the work world, Vickie revealed, “I am currently preparing for a Salesforce certification exam and balancing several exciting opportunities.” Her next chapter will certainly include giving back to charitable causes. Vickie is active in the Del Mar Rotary Club, and she is a long-time volunteer with Feeding America. “I love volunteering in the community!” she exclaimed. Vickie will also be at the beach. Her husband and both of her sons surf, so most family weekends involve ocean waves. In fact, the surf culture so pervades her lifestyle that when her boys were little, Vickie was inspired to create her own small business making surf-themed baby clothes! Now that her time commitments have eased up a bit, Vickie plans to pursue more of her own personal fun diversions and hobbies. For example, Vickie will continue to whip up her own kombucha (a fermented tea drink) and try new restaurants with her family. She will also continue listening to true crime podcasts such as In the Dark and Slow Burn. She admitted, “These podcasts overlap with my passion for dark European crime dramas. If it’s set in a fjord and has a gloomy theme song, then sign me up!” Perhaps most importantly, Vickie will strive to be in the moment whenever she’s with others. She explained, “I love talking with people and really listening to what they are saying. Appreciating another person’s perspective is a great way to understand the world better. I always encourage my sons to ‘be present.’ Look up, look around, and give Know someone that should be profiled in Del Sol Magazine? someone you don’t know a smile... especially if they are snarling!”  Recommend someone online at www.delsolmagazine.com. 8 • DELSOLMAGAZINE.COM • January | Febraury 2019

BGCSD RECEIVES GRANT FOR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE PROGRAM

T

he Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSD) recently received a $10,000 grant from the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation in support of the Center for a Healthy Lifestyle program. The Center for a Healthy Lifestyle has two locations: a half-acre farm and teaching kitchen at the Griset Clubhouse in Encinitas and a garden and teaching kitchen at the Harper Clubhouse in Solana Beach, both of which engage children and teens in organic gardening, nutrition, STEM workshops, and hands-on cooking instruction. The Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation also organized a national volunteer day with the 2018 grant recipients in November. Nearly 400 Sprouts Farmers Market employees and their families

participated in 28 volunteer activities across the nation during the Sprouts Day of Service, including close to 20 employees from Sprouts Farmers Market locations in San Diego County at the Center for a Healthy Lifestyle. Volunteers assisted with gardening and kitchen maintenance, clearing over 70 bags of green waste and reorganizing the kitchen in time for fall camps. “We’re incredibly proud of the turnout we had for our first Day of Service,” said the Foundation’s Executive Director Lyndsey Waugh. “The gardens we built and the projects we completed will have a very real and lasting impact on hundreds of lives.” BGCSD plans to deepen its partnership with the Foundation and local Sprouts Farmers Markets at future service events. rew Isaacman’s commitment to Del Mar Little League has been unwavering, even after his sons aged out of the league. “I managed a majors team last season, even though neither of my sons were playing. It was a fantastic experience to see what managing for the sole purpose of helping others would be like. My great assistant, Mike Maronde (who also didn’t have a player on the team) and I enjoyed every minute and gained a whole new perspective on Little League,” explained Drew. For his efforts, Drew was chosen as the District 31 Richard “Dick” Budlong Volunteer of the Year. Honored and humbled by the recognition, Drew is proud to have made a difference for Little League players, parents, and coaches throughout the district. “Little League provides such a great platform for someone like me to give back to the community. My two boys got so much from their Little League experiences, and the most rewarding thing I can do is help provide that opportunity for others,” he revealed. For the past four years, Drew has served as a member of the League board, as well as a coach and manager. Currently, he serves as fields coordinator, taking responsibility for the condition of the 10 Little League fields. “I even try and get the kids involved with this effort so they too can take pride in the parks and fields they use so often,” related Drew. Volunteering is a major part of Drew’s life, as he has led the efforts at the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation to ensure that local children receive the educational resources they deserve. He has also served on local recreation councils to make certain that community parks and facilities are well funded and properly maintained. “Once you see how people, especially kids, can benefit from your time and effort, it really gets addictive,” stated Drew, who cites the memory of his father as his inspiration for helping others and also for providing the best possible upbringing for his three children. When Drew is not volunteering or working – he is the owner of Teak & Deck Professionals – he can be found playing golf and spending time with his wife, two sons, and daughter. “We moved to the community near Ashley Falls Elementary School in 2005. We came from Potomac, MD, so the weather here in San Diego still amazes us,” said Drew with a laugh. 

SCIENCE DENTAL IMPLANT DENTISTRY

THE

OF

by TARKAN SIDAL, DDS, MD

A

dental implant is an artificial titanium fixture that is placed surgically into the jaw bone to substitute for a missing tooth and its roots.

There are different types of dental implants ranging from blade to cylinder to screw type, with the screw type being the most commonly accepted design nowadays. Titanium is the ninth most abundant metal on Earth. It has a light weight, is resistant to corrosion, and is biocompatible with living tissue. Swedish surgeon Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark discovered that when titanium makes contact with living bone tissue, they grow together to form a permanent adhesion. He named this process osseointegration.Osseointegration – defined as direct structural and functional connection between ordered, living bone and the surface of a load carrying implant – belongs to the category of primary bone healing. Right after implant placement, the

inflammatory bone healing phase takes place. This is followed by the proliferative phase where initial bone, known as woven bone, is formed four to six weeks after the implant placement surgery. This bone is low in density but forms rapidly. The third phase is the maturation phase, where osteoid type bone deposited. Loading the implant (using the implant) stimulates transformation from woven bone to lamellar bone. This bone is the weight-bearing bone that is formed; lastly, the resorption and remodeling phase occurs throughout the lifetime of the implant. The implant complex is composed of multitudes of structures: bone tissue, implant, abutment, abutment screw, prosthetic superstructure, retention screw, esthetic facing, chewing surface. Bone tissue, placement of implant, and generally the healing abutment is dealt with by a surgeon or the implant placing practitioner; the rest of the structures are dealt with by the restoring dentist. Your surgeon and restoring dentist work together to provide the best coordinated care.

Most people are candidates for dental implants except for a small group of patients who are compromised medically and/or dentally, demonstrating delayed healing such as immunosuppression, antimetabolic treatment, or uncontrolled diabetes. It takes time for dental implant dentistry to take place due to the rules of the physiology of osseointegration. Conventionally, after a tooth is extracted, with or without bone grafting, it takes about three to four months until the site is ready for the actual implant placement. This time period might slightly vary depending on the quality of the patient’s existing bone quality. Following the dental implant placement, roughly another four months is needed for osseointegration of the titanium to the native bone due to laws of bone physiology. Then the patient’s restoring dentist works on the actual delivery of the crown, which is the only visible portion of this complex. There are also other variations of treatment in regards to dental implant placement and bone grafting, these are discussed on a case by case basis with a patient’s restoring dentist and surgeon working together to reach a customized outcome at the patient’s best interest. 

San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy is the Southern California land trust for the 1,000-acre San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, working to protect and restore the resources of the lagoon, its watershed, and related ecosystems for the benefit of current and future generations. “It has been an exciting year for the Conservancy,” Doug said. “We are honored to receive this award highlighting our decades of work, including securing new lands, providing education and experiences for all, and reviving our wetlands and beaches.” For more information go to www.sanelijo.org.

Local author Kathy Cooperman recently penned a novel called The Very Principled Maggie Mayfield, a fun, witty story of friendship and romance that also looks at San Diego’s public education system. The book centers on Maggie Mayfield, a pragmatic but idealistic principal at an elementary school in Carmel Valley. To keep her cash-strapped school afloat and avoid layoffs, Maggie accepts a deal from Silicon Valley’s hottest for-profit education company, requiring her students to beta-test their program. When things take a turn for the worse, Maggie and her assistant Diane must salvage the good – by going a little bad. Kathy is an ex-improv comic, a recovering attorney, and a mother of four. She is also the author of the Amazon bestseller Crimes Against a Book Club. Both of her books are available on Amazon.

Therapeutic Learning Center (formerly Therapeutic Literacy Center) provides individually specialized cognitive therapy and educational services for remediation of learning disabilities and learning challenges. arents with children that are struggling in school may want to consider the Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) as a short-term investment. Since its inception in 2012, TLC has a mission to FIX learning challenges and disabilities so that students can thrive in any classroom environment with confidence and joy in learning. The program was originally called Therapeutic Literacy Center, but has recently changed its name to better represent the breadth and scope of learning skills TLC focuses on. Located in Solana Beach, TLC’s clinicians provide cognitive therapies for children and adults along with a private school option with academic classes for students in 1st through 12th grades. “We provide individual educational services with specialized cognitive therapy meant to FIX or erase of all kinds of learning difficulties and identified disabilities. After a relatively short period of time at TLC, students transition back to their traditional schools as successful and independent learners,” said school principal Maria Bagby. Individual services are designed to FIX their learning problems, so that students can independently move forward on an even playing field without the need for accommodations and extra support. “These kids are smart, but struggling. They don’t need us to ‘teach to their strengths’ as we’ve all been told. They need us to strengthen their weaknesses so that learning comes easily in any environment,” Maria explained. Maria herself is a reading specialist and works closely with a network of professionals including educational psychologists, audiologists, MFTs,

“TLC OPENED DOORS OF POSSIBILITIES FOR MY CHILD’S FUTURE... IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE!” – Mother of a TLC student psychologists, and occupational therapists. The team is dedicated to identifying and fixing the CAUSE of problems rather than focusing on symptoms that come along with frustration and difficulties in attention, motivation, and organization. Some of these symptoms come with labels such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Nonspecific Learning Disabilities, Other Health Impairments, and more. Others have no label at all. TLC is ideal for kids who are struggling in a typical school environment. The school focuses

on the science of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change both its physical structure and its functional organization in response to training and experience. For many students, TLC clinicians combine proven cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program. The unique hybrid method of combining cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program accelerates changes in learning success. “We don’t expect our students to stay with us more than one to two years before they are ready to reintegrate into mainstream classes with new levels of success, academically and socially. This is a short-term investment in the life of a child with permanent changes in learning skills.” In addition to their private school option, TLC offers services before, during, and after school for families that choose therapy while remaining in their current school of choice. With their new name in the new year, TLC has redesigned its financial structure with a reduced cost to families. “We have no contracts, lower hourly services, and increased student services,” Maria related. “We are listening to the parents – we are making it easier for them to give their children what they need.” 

THE GRAUER SCHOOL

f you have a middle or high school-aged child who wants to go beyond the regimented educational system and is seeking greater connection with teachers, with peers, and with the whole learning experience, do not despair. The Grauer School in Encinitas, which happens to be the longest-serving independent school in San Diego’s North County, is a solution. Its stated philosophy reads as such: “More than just a curriculum, real teaching is the deepening relationship between teacher and student.” Established in 1991, Grauer claims to be the worldwide leader in the “small schools movement.” The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools, educators, and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from oneroom schoolhouses to Peking University. We support all these great movements and traditions which have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs added, “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great

traditions to infuse all that we keep learning and synthesizing. With the freedom to make choices in their education, our students are discovering their passions and becoming courageous, curious leaders.

“AT GRAUER, NO STUDENT GOES UNNOTICED – ALL ARE PROUD OF THEMSELVES, ALL ARE ENCOURAGED AND REWARDED IN FINDING THEIR VOICE AND THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD. THEY’RE ADVENTURESOME. THEY’RE HAPPY!” ~ Julie D., 11th Grade Parent

And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are getting accepted to and are succeeding at their top choice colleges.”

24 • DELSOLMAGAZINE.COM • January | Febraury 2019

Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, selfadvocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, guest speakers, community service activities, and studentcreated programs, all of which serve to complement the required subject matters and stimulate young minds. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world, all while gaining unbeatable college placement: 96% of top three college picks and averaging $50-60,000 in merit scholarship offers for graduating seniors. Emphasizing the concept of students taking ownership over their learning, Dana exclaimed, “In a world that often seems to put ‘standards’ before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student. Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.” 

VILLAGE CHURCH PRESCHOOL

A

lifelong journey of learning and inspiration begins at The Village Church Preschool (VCP). Children ages two to five can play, learn, and grow through the school’s focus on developing the whole child. “That includes each stage of development – social, spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and gross motor, which provides for kindergarten readiness,” explained VCP Director Pamela Miller. “Our philosophy is Developmentally Appropriate Practice, which means we provide experiences and activities that are appropriate for each stage of development.” Teachers get to know each child as an individual, developing unique curriculum to engage and inspire each child’s interests. STEAM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – feature prominently in the curriculum. VCP’s rich history speaks to a legacy of support and achievement. The school was founded in 1962 by young moms at the Village Church seeking the perfect place for their children to learn and play – today, some of the earliest students are now sending their own students to VCP. The highly educated teaching staff is part of that legacy as well. “VCP is such an amazing place to teach that teachers stay for many years!” Director Miller shared. “The average length of employment for our teachers is 20-plus years; we have very low turnover.” VCP knows it takes a village to raise a child, and teachers build meaningful relationships with the entire family. Supportive, respectful relationships between children and their peers, teachers, and families are vital for healthy development. “We view parents as participants in their child’s educational life and welcome you into our classroom as an intricate part of our community of learners,” Director Miller said. Perhaps the best opportunity to take advantage of everything our city has to offer is Feb. 14 through 24 for San Diego Theatre Week, an annual event that highlights the variety and talent of the local performing arts community with special promotions from participating groups as well as events throughout the week. PRO ETIQUETTE TIPS: Dress to impress. While casual attire is generally acceptable for attending a daytime show, nighttime shows warrant slightly more formal dress. And don't forget a jacket or coat – the theater can be chilly!

Arrive early. Try to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the show to find your seat, read the program, and listen to any important announcements.

Turn off your cell phone. Be sure to silence any electronic devices that could be a distraction to the performers on stage or the people around you.
