T
his issue of Del Sol Magazine contains a very special annual real estate section (see page 26). There are many elements that go into building a community, and active local real estate professionals are definitely one of the key components. They are often a part of the community themselves, walking their kids to school or sitting next to us at soccer games. Many of them sponsor school programs and/or donate time and money to local charities and organizations. But perhaps the most important thing is that they are working with us on what is considered to be the single largest investment of our lives – buying or selling our homes. While we often see the faces of our local real estate celebrities in the pages of this magazine, on the real estate signs around town, on the ballpark fences, or even on the shopping carts watching us as we make the dreadful decision to go with paper or plastic, we wanted to take it one step further. Real estate is definitely hyper-local, and this real estate issue gives you a glimpse into the individual “movers and shakers” of our local real estate industry. The intention of the real estate issue is to create a personal introduction to the actual person – not just the Realtor® – that dedicates their career to overseeing our local real estate market. I hope that you enjoy getting to know your local Realtors®. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses. They are constantly working in front of and behind the Derrick Breaux scenes to keep their fingers on the real estate market pulse and Publisher see that our communities continue to move forward.
All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Nick Wallace Brings Joy and Laughter to Hospitalized Children by JENNIFER FRAKES
M
aking a difference in the lives of children and bringing them joy is Nick Wallace’s passion. Nick has biliary artresia, a pediatric liver disease, and in 2013, he received a lifesaving liver transplant. “I spent a lot of my childhood in and out of hospitals, often in isolation. I learned to be a master at entertaining myself. When a friend of mine was diagnosed with bone cancer, I wanted to give him something to make his first chemotherapy treatment and hospitalization more tolerable. I put together a backpack of items I loved and found the most useful and fun,” explained Nick. Now, Nick’s Picks has more than 12 items, including the Boogie Board LCD writing tablet and the Baden glow-in-the-dark mini basketball hoop.

Nick’s Picks currently serves 15 centers nationwide, with most centers located on the West Coast. The eventual goal is to serve at least one large Children’s Hospital in all 50 states. According to Nick, anyone can help Nick’s Picks reach this goal – from putting up a lemonade stand to benefit the organization to encouraging community foundations to donate to the cause. “Only $50 supports a backpack for a hospitalized kid. It’s hard for most people to imagine how isolated you can feel in the hospital. I want to help these kids feel connected to the world,” stated Nick. Nick is inspired and motivated to continue the mission of Nick’s Picks by each and every child he helps. He receives pictures and emails from kids who have been positively impacted by this nonprofit organization, and he is touched by the stories of resilience and determination. “One boy was so depressed in the hospital that he hadn’t spoken in four months after his four-organ transplant. He got his Nick Pick’s backpack and something in it made him laugh. His parents said that it was the one thing that helped him to communicate again,” revealed Nick. Through Nick’s Picks, Nick has also met another boy with the same liver condition. Nick is now this little boy’s friend and mentor. As a student at Torrey Pines High School, Nick loves his American history class and playing for the school’s lacrosse team. He also plays for Team 12 club lacrosse and enjoys surfing at the beaches of Del Mar with friends. In spite of missing so much school due to illness, High Bluff Academy, Nick’s school at the time, was extremely accommodating, ultimately allowing Nick to graduate on track with his TPHS peers next year. Nick’s favorite hobby is filmmaking, and he hopes to one day become a professional filmmaker who tells people’s stories through film.

The Martin Family Gets Involved With Their Community by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Soul of Photography
F
or sons Bryce and Brody, mom Danielle Martin stresses the importance of getting involved in their community and learning what it means to step outside themselves. “Kids these days are so lost in their iPads and cell phones,” she explained, “they are being disabled of basic social skills and their ability to actually read people.” She wants her boys to have good situational awareness and compassion. “They can’t achieve this unless we encourage them to look up from their technology and smell the roses.” Some ways Name: Children: Community: Pets: Favorite Spots in Del Sol:
Danielle Martin Bryce (13) and Brody (9) Coastal North County Fiona – Rottweiler; Miah – Border Collie/Cattle Dog Camelia Boutique, Surf Ride Boardshop, Studio 540, and L’Auberge. We love the restaurants in these areas and riding bikes to them for evening dinners.
the Martins achieve this by baking goods every Christmas, and putting handmade cards, socks, and blankets into care packages, which they then deliver to the homeless. This way, the boys get a good look at what is going on in their San Diego community and can be aware of reality. “I have them do these kinds of things yearly,” Danielle shared, “and every day they give thanks for all they have.” Some of Danielle’s outlook comes from the business and foundation she runs, both called True Boundaries. The business teaches personal protection, and the charitable foundation brings awareness to assault, domestic violence, and bullying. “We educate, empower, and help people who are victims of these unfortunate things,” she shared. Danielle speaks around the country on behalf of the True Boundaries mission and gives scholarships and assistance to victims. Although the foundation was just founded this year, she sees hard work paying off and only great things ahead. Danielle met Bryce and Brody’s dad at a BBQ, shortly after graduating from UCLA (she played softball for the Bruins!). He became a Major League Baseball player for 15 years and currently manages the AAA program for the Chicago White Sox. He’s based out of North Carolina, which means the Martin boys have been able to travel throughout the country due to the nature of his and Danielle’s professions. Their interests have mostly revolved around sports and the ocean, through basketball, surfing, and playing on demanding travel baseball teams. They also play in the Del Mar Little League, which Danielle coaches. They love adventures. “Raising two boys is amazing, but it’s important to teach them to be gentlemen and to remind them they’re not entitled to anything,” Danielle smiled. “I teach them manners, to open doors for women, and to be little warriors in the face of fear.”

s a CPA who specializes in liability and medical malpractice for local physicians, Solana Beach resident Bob DeSimone didn’t hesitate when a physician friend asked if he’d like to be on the board for the doctor-centric foundation Champions for Health. Bob admitted, “It made sense to join a group of doctors who are doing wonderful things. It is a way for me to give back to the people who have supported me over many years.” Champions for Health is a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for medical professionals to volunteer their services for the impoverished in San Diego. As a board member, Bob chairs the Development/Marketing Committee, and his primary role is to oversee two major annual fundraising events: the Aces

for Health Golf and Tennis Tournament, and the Solana Beach Sunset 5K Run/Walk. The Aces for Health Golf and Tennis Tournament, which took place on March 27 at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, raised $73,000 for Project Access San Diego, the organization’s flagship program that provides specialty healthcare services to those in need. Bob elaborated, “There are roughly 650 physicians who volunteer to do flu immunizations, blood pressure tests, and screenings for breast and colorectal cancer. There are also surgery days on a Saturday, when surgeons come in and perform miracles, basically.” The Solana Beach Sunset 5K Run/Walk netted $70,000 last year, and those funds went toward a diabetes prevention program called

Jump Start for Health. The upcoming 5K event will take place on October 8. Bob exclaimed, “It is done at low tide, entirely on the beach. There’s food and music, and we give out medals and T-shirts.” When he isn’t working or volunteering, Bob indulges in all that Solana Beach has to offer. He and his wife moved to the beachside community from Rancho Santa Fe six years ago, after their children became adults and left them empty-nesters. Bob revealed, “In Rancho Santa Fe we felt kind of out of the way in terms of being able to get to places. Now we’re right at the beach! My office and gym are also in Solana Beach, and within a half mile we’re walking distance from a bunch of restaurants and a lot of different activities we can do.”

Eight Tips to Healthy Eating on Vacation by LAWRENCE SCHLITT, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Del Mar Vacations are an opportunity to refresh, relax, and recharge ― and perhaps indulge in the local cuisine. While expanding your palate is a part of traveling, you don’t want to add extra pounds. These tips can help you eat healthy while seeing the sights. 1. Bring your own snacks. Pack travel-friendly nibbles for the plane or car ride, such as pretzels, cheese sticks, packets of nut butter, or cut-up veggies with hummus. 2. Avoid the mini-bar. That little refrigerator in your hotel is filled with snacks and drinks loaded with sugar and salt. Instead of raiding the mini-bar, pick up snacks at the local farmers market or grocery and stock your room with easy finger foods, such as fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, and pre-cut vegetables, as well as plenty of water.
3. Eat breakfast. While vacation schedules vary from your local routine, don’t skip the first meal of the day. If you are staying at a resort, take advantage of the breakfast or brunch buffet and fill up on fruit, salads, and whole grains such as whole-wheat toast or oatmeal. If going out for breakfast, choose lean protein, such as eggs, and fruit. 4. Splurge once a day. It’s a vacation, so enjoy special treats. If you are in Paris, you might want a fresh-baked croissant from the bakery around the corner. If you are on a road trip with the kids, you might want to stop at the ice cream stand for a homemade indulgence. Monitor your portions, eat slowly, and savor every bite. 5. Make your own meals. If you can cook where you are staying, take advantage and try your hand at cooking, especially with local produce and items you might not be able to get at home. Now is the time to try fern shoot salad or Connecticut shad. 6. Try local restaurants. Ask for directions to favorite spots that serve
local products. Explore the regional cuisine and enjoy food prepared traditionally, which usually has fewer processed ingredients. Don’t be shy about ordering a meal to split if you think the portion sizes will be too much for you to eat at one sitting. Alternatively, if you have a refrigerator in your room you can ask for a doggy bag. 7. Walk everywhere. Strolling through museums, a new city, or on the beach is a chance to explore while burning up calories. If a destination is within a mile, walk. Make sure you bring comfortable, supportive shoes and a first-aid kit for any blisters. 8. Stay hydrated. Dehydration is common when traveling, especially when flying. Bring an empty water bottle to the airport and fill it once you are past the security checkpoint. Stock up on water bottles once you are at your destination and bring a bottle wherever you go. Most importantly, have fun. Vacations are a time to enjoy yourself with family and friends and explore both new and familiar places.

Two years ago Dr. Tarkan Sidal took over the practice with a commitment to uphold its extraordinary reputation, and based on recent patient feedback, Dr. Sidal is doing an outstanding job. “I enjoy following in the footsteps of the original founders of Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery by providing superb patient care,” said Dr. Sidal. “I am committed to providing the finest 24 • DELSOLMAGAZINE.COM • June | July 2017
individual care and exceptional service in every aspect of patient treatment.” Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery ranging from dental implant surgery, bone grafting, and wisdom teeth removal to trauma reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery, and pathology. “If surgery needs to be performed in the hospital and a hospital stay is required, I am on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Sharp Memorial Hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital, Scripps Clinic, and the University of California San Diego,” noted Dr. Sidal. “We also diagnose and treat orofacial pain, facial injuries, and fractures.”
Dr. Sidal prides himself on having a kind and compassionate approach toward his patients – a quality that helps set his practice apart from others in the industry. “We believe in traditional values such as excellent customer service and personalized attention to our patients, and we treat every patient as if they were part of the family,” explained Dr. Sidal. “We pride ourselves on attention to detail. We will make sure to fully explain the necessary procedures to patients and answer any questions they might have.” Both a licensed physician and oral maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Sidal is expertly skilled in caring for face and jaw conditions. Degree from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Dr. Sidal participated in several oral and maxillofacial surgery internship and externship programs. He then completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center. “Upon completing medical school, my curiosity in learning and everlasting passion for dentistry, medicine and surgery brought me back home to UCSF, where I completed a prestigious chief resident appointment in oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as a general surgery internship at the UCSF, Department of Surgery,” elaborated Dr. Sidal. “I then embarked on completing two years of rigorous fellowship training at the San Diego Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.” Since then, Dr. Sidal – who is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Oral and Facial Surgeons of California – has participated in various surgical

Passion for Painting Artist Deborah Walker Enjoys Expressing Herself With Watercolors by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Soul of Photography
D
eborah Walker has been an artist her whole life. So when she moved to picturesque Solana Beach over four years ago, she felt right at home. “I love living on the beach, the sunsets, the neighborhood, and the weather,” said Deborah, who is passionate about watercolor painting. “I love the creativity and freedom I feel when I paint,” she shared. “You cannot correct what you put on paper and you cannot paint over it. It is very translucent and soft. I love the final product, which is very healing.” Recently, Deborah – who is also a wellness advocate and enjoys integrating her art with teaching mediation, wellness, and life balance – has decided to share her creative side with the public. “I never thought to share my artwork until a couple years ago when it was posted on Facebook, and it grew from there,” explained Deborah. Ever since, she has showcased her artwork in local art exhibits, events, boutiques, and markets. “I also love when my artwork inspires someone or makes them feel at peace.” While her admiration for various artists and her frequent visits to local art galleries encourages Deborah’s creative side, she said that it’s her own life that serves as the main influence on her artwork. "What I’m going through, feeling, current experiences,” noted Deborah. In her day-to-day life, Deborah enjoys spending her time with her fiancé, Ray. “We spend a lot of time on the beach, hiking, and sharing and supporting in each other’s passions,” shared Deborah. “Raymond is an ultra-endurance cyclist and I love teaching meditation, yoga, and exploring and showing my work in art exhibits. We also travel as much as possible!” Deborah’s sister, brother-in-law, three daughters, and two grandchildren are also a constant in her life. “We all live within an hour of each other and do our best to see each other as much as possible,” she explained. As for advice she has for aspiring artists, Deborah replied, “To not give in to critics of your work, do what you love, and always be proud of what you create, as it is an expression of you. Always follow your heart, your passion, believe in yourself, and never ever give up!” Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies: Favorite Spots in Del Sol:

LOCAL SOROPTIMISTS PRODUCE SUCCESSFUL HIGH TEA EVENT
N
early 400 guests attended the annual Soroptimist High Tea, sponsored by the clubs of Poway and North San Diego, at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar this year. Cindy Spilman from the Poway club and Nancy Eastman from the North San Diego club cochaired the event. Carlo Cecchetto from CBS8 served as emcee and auctioneer. Entertainment was provided by twotime Grammy Award-winning Kamau Kenyatta and jazz singer Daneen Wilbur, whose poignant rendition of “Lean on Me” moved the room to tears. Through the combination of sponsors, ticket sales, live and silent auctions, and flash sales, the event grossed approximately $120,000. Though it is up to each club to determine which programs they would like to support, both clubs will use the majority of the event proceeds for their Transitional Housing Program, which provides apartments for survivors of
domestic violence and their children. The clubs furnish each apartment with used furniture, stock the pantry with food, and cover a portion of the rent. Proceeds from the tea are also used for other programs benefiting women and girls, such as the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award and Dream It Be It. As part of the worldwide Soroptimist International organization, the Poway and North San Diego clubs work to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment, advancing public awareness for women’s issues, and celebrating their contributions and achievements both locally and globally. Date Night for a Cause
RADY CHILDREN’S AUXILIARY RAISES FUNDS FOR GENOMIC MEDICINE
T
he North Coast Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary hosted Date Night for a Cause at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. Over 340 guests attended the event, featuring live music by Atomic Groove, food, opportunity drawings, and a live auction. More than $81,000 was raised this year, all of which will benefit the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary Endowment for Genomics Neuroscience at the Institute for Genomic Medicine. Established in 2014, Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine seeks to build the infrastructure that will make it possible to sequence the genome of every child who is cared for at Rady Children’s, which has been shown to yield life-changing results. Over 30 families have had their DNA sequenced, and half of those cases have produced answers for the unexplained symptoms causing newborns to be hospitalized. The ability to sequence the DNA of every

child at Rady Children’s will therefore dramatically increase life-saving diagnoses and effective treatment. Genome sequencing can also be helpful for those living with neurological diseases and disorders. In addition to high-speed DNA sequencing, the Endowment for Neuroscience Chair Dr. Joseph Gleeson and his team will be able to provide clinical genetics, bioinformatics, clinical trials, and cutting-edge research to improve care for these patients. The mission of the North Coast Auxiliary Unit is to support Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego by advocating for the health and well-being of children, increasing community awareness, and fundraising. Over the past 34 years, the unit has raised nearly $1,250,000, which benefits a different department of the hospital each year. For more information go to www.radysncu.com.

Rent vs. Buy
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE MAKING THIS DECISION
A
t a certain point in our lives we ask ourselves… “Maybe it’s time to buy a house?” This time could come when all of your friends are starting to make major life changes. Or this time could come several years after you short sold your home. When that time happens there are 8 questions that you should ask yourself. According to CAR Market Matters and Credit.com consider the following questions: 1. What is your top financial priority? 2. Do you have enough money for a down payment and the money to cover the closing costs? 3. What is the comparison between home prices and rent prices? 4. How long do you plan to live here in the area? 5. Can you qualify for a mortgage? And is that mortgage your best option? 6. As a homeowner, what additional costs will you be responsible for in addition to your monthly mortgage payment? 7. Are you ok with the risks of owning a home? 8. How would owning a home affect your lifestyle? These are questions only you can

SURFIN’ SAN DIEGO Catch a Wave at One of the Top Surf Spots This Summer by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
S
and, sunshine, and salty ocean water. There are few things more quintessentially San Diego than hitting the surf at the beach. In fact, San Diego is known for having some world-class surfing spots, and plenty of options for all skill levels. Since beaches can get crowded, especially during the warmer summer months, be sure to get there early enough to stake out your spot and make parking a bit easier too. So grab your board and some sunscreen and check out some of these top local spots to catch the perfect wave!
LA JOLLA SHORES, LA JOLLA BEGINNER/ INTERMEDIATE La Jolla Shores is one of San Diego’s best and most popular beaches. It’s a safe spot for beginners to learn or practice surfing on gentle waves. And it’s great for the whole family – the beach has year-round lifeguard services, good facilities, a parking lot, fire pits, and a children’s playground just across the sidewalk. Several surf schools operate from here as well.
TOURMALINE SURFING PARK, PACIFIC BEACH BEGINNER/ INTERMEDIATE Tourmaline has a history of being a true surf hangout for San Diego locals. The waves are soft and gentle and the beach comes equipped with showers and restrooms. Hop on over to Garnet Ave. after your surf session for a bite to eat while you watch the sun set.

SWAMI’S BEACH, ENCINITAS
BLACK’S BEACH, LA JOLLA
INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED
INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED
Swami’s is an internationally known spot for good surf. A variety of breaks make for high-performance waves for longboard and shortboard surfers. It can be difficult to paddle out here, though, so strong swimming skills are a must.
Black’s is arguably home to San Diego’s best surf. An offshore underwater trench funnels powerful swells into this area, which can be dangerous for inexperienced surfers. Getting to the beach requires a bit of trekking and since Black’s is infamous for its “clothing optional” rule, it might be best to leave the kids home for this one.
LOWER TRESTLES, SAN ONOFRE INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED Lowers, as it’s called, is part of a collection of surfing spots at San Onofre State Beach that sits at the top of San Diego County. It is one of the world’s most high-profile and high-performance spots, often hosting expert and even professional-level surfers. For this reason, Lowers can get crowded and claiming waves can get competitive.
