hen I published my first community magazine, our oldest daughter was in the eighth grade. Our son was in kindergarten, and our youngest daughter hadn’t yet started school. The strange thing is that it feels like 2009 was just yesterday. Fast forward, and our oldest daughter is now a senior in college, our son is an eighth grader, and our youngest daughter is in seventh grade. As you know, I often write about time flying by. This past weekend marked another milestone for the Breaux household. Ashley, our oldest daughter, celebrated her 21st birthday! Much to our surprise, Ashley invited us to go out with her group of friends on her special night in downtown San Diego. After repeatedly asking her if she was sure about having her parents tag along, my wife and I reluctantly agreed to go (along with another lifelong friend of ours that Ashley refers to as Aunt Wendy). We needed another adult from our generation for moral support. The group started at a count of 15 people. We all had dinner at a restaurant downtown before Ubering to the first club. The intentions were to stick around for a little while and then head out. That plan didn’t work out so well, as we ended up staying for the duration of the evening. The night was filled with a variety of emotions. I was observing our baby girl in her adult environment for the very first time. Although we were very much interacting with the group, at times I felt like a fly on Derrick and his daughter Ashley the wall – silently observing and taking in the entire circa 2005. Time flies! experience. She was having a great time with her close friends, laughing, dancing, and celebrating. More of Ashley’s friends kept arriving. Some arrivals were clearly unexpected and a special surprise to her. The entire situation touched our hearts. There was one common theme – everyone was there to celebrate with her on her special day. It was at that moment that I realized our baby girl was grown up. Although some may see it as unconventional, we had a great time celebrating with our daughter and her friends that night. I would like to give a special thanks to Ashley’s friends for being such an important part of her life and enthusiastically welcoming us old people into their circle. I still don’t feel like I’m a “grown up” yet. In many aspects, I still feel the same way that I felt when I was a teenager. But make no mistake about it, watching my baby girl turn 21 years old definitely puts me one step closer in my search to feel grown up. Oh, to be young again…

ANDREW RAMIREZ MAKES A DIFFERENCE ON AND OFF THE BASEBALL FIELD by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Soul of Photography

Name: School: Grade: Parents: Sibling: Favorite Places in Solana Beach and Del Mar:

or seventh grader Andrew Ramirez, baseball is a way of life. “I have been playing baseball for seven years. The sport has taught me to work hard, and I practice on my own even when I’m not playing with my team,” revealed Andrew, who plays third base and outfield. Last year, Andrew played in his final season of Solana Beach Little League and it was an unforgettable experience for him. “I was determined to do my best, and I was selected for the All-Star team. It was great to learn more and do what I love,” stated Andrew. He recently made the North County Mavericks, a competitive club team, and is thoroughly enjoying this new challenge. Andrew’s favorite part of playing baseball is the good friendships he has made and the opportunities to learn new skills that help him improve mentally and physically in the sport. His family has a long history of playing baseball, particularly in Solana Beach. “My dad played baseball in Solana Beach Little League when he was young. He inspired me to become involved in the sport, and it really has become a passion of mine,” related Andrew. Off the field, Andrew enjoys learning about science and technology at Earl Warren Middle School and feels very strongly about giving back to the community where his family has lived for more than 40 years. Each summer, Andrew volunteers for the Kids Games at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church. “Kids Games is a week-long event that I attended when I was younger,” he said. “I love going back as a student volunteer. I am able to connect with the younger kids and help them have the same great experience I had.” This student athlete and community volunteer is already thinking of the future and has big plans in mind. “My dream is to play college baseball and study computer engineering or business management,” said Andrew, who describes himself as having a relentless drive to improve on his baseball and Andrew Ramirez (13) academic skills. He is inspired by his hardEarl Warren Middle School working family and strives each and every day to make 7 them proud. Andrew is one to watch as he continues on his Dad – Jose Ramirez; Mom – Marcela Ramirez path to success, both on and off the baseball field.  Samantha Ramirez (16) Chief’s Burgers & Brew, San Elijo Lagoon, Know a student that should be profiled in Del Sol Magazine? and Sun Diego Boardshop

lthough Market Cuisine West was established just this year, owner and chef Stephen GianDonato has a lifetime of experience in the food service industry. “I grew up around our family deli businesses doing basically every job you can do,” he shared. Stephen opened his first restaurant in Atlantic City, NJ at the age of 18, attended culinary school, and began to work his way through a variety of high-level industry jobs. In 2004, Stephen opened Market Cuisine Catering in Wayne, PA, through which he catered many prestigious events including presidential inaugurations, the Atlantic City Boat Show, Wawa Welcome America festival, and Dad Vail Regatta, among others. Stephen and his wife Stephanie recently decided to relocate to San Diego, and closed business doors in Pennsylvania. “Once out here, I saw the quality of service that was provided in my field,” Stephen said, “and decided I had to show the area how I do things.” And Market Cuisine West was born. Market Cuisine West is a full-service catering and event coordinating company that handles every aspect of your party, from

planning to execution. The company is available for any type of small or large event including private dinner parties, weddings, holiday parties, bridal/baby showers, funeral receptions, corporate meetings, and outdoor events. Stephen offers highly personalized service, meeting privately with each client to design the menu, sample menu tastings, and discuss any additional needs. Clients work directly with him from start to finish. Stephen has experience with a wide range of cuisines, including Italian, American, Asian, Mexican, and vegetarian, and is always adding new items to his repertoire. He does the preparation and cooking himself, and can customize an event menu based on the client’s personal tastes. “I pride myself in knowing all cooking techniques,” he explained, “which allows me to be able to cook all types of food in all different styles.” Market Cuisine West provides the kind of high-quality service you would expect from a large catering company with the personalized touch of a family-owned operation. “We’re bringing back the old school way of being someone people can truly trust and count on.” 

Stephen not only provides the best quality of food and presentations but the best in overall customer service, from beginning to end. He was always ready and willing to take on any challenge we threw his way, providing a great selection and working with us to stay within any budget. His hands-on approach to every detail assured a successful event every time.” ~Paola S.

eventeen-year-old Jose Becerra was recently named the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSD) 2017 Youth of the Year. Jose has been active at the La Colonia Clubhouse in Solana Beach since 2007, which he says has shaped him into the person he is today. “The club has given me the opportunity to experience so many firsts,” Jose shared. “My first bike, first pair of shoes, first soccer ball, first Christmas, first pair of cleats, and the first place that I call my second home.” The club also gave him the opportunity to participate in an internship with DPR Construction last summer, where he learned about the industry and honed his skills. After high school, Jose plans to attend college and study construction management. “These past 10 years at the club have been the greatest years of my life,” he said. “The club has motivated me to keep

working on my studies because graduating from college will help me ensure a good life for my family. Most importantly, the club has taught me to live life the best way possible and to make a positive impact on the world and change the lives of others just like Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito created a change in my life.” BGCSD’s Youth of the Year Celebration acknowledges teens ages 14 through 18 for their achievements in leadership, service, and academic excellence. It is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program and the most esteemed youth leadership awards in the nation. This year’s celebratory event was held at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Infield Pavilion, where guests enjoyed dinner, wine, music, nighttime horse racing, and silent and live auctions. ‹Finding Their Perfect Fit› The McConville Family Values the Solana Beach Lifestyle by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Soul of Photography

T

he McConville family’s move to Solana Beach in 2010 was a decision years in the making. Living in Clairemont, Peter and Beth wanted to move north to a community with great schools, a good neighborhood vibe, and a central location. “Peter literally spent years researching the best neighborhood for us,” Beth said. “Solana Beach was the perfect fit.” Their home today is not far from where the couple met their freshmen year at University of California San Diego. They married in 1991 in La Jolla and spent time in Hawaii and Gig Harbor, WA before returning to San Diego. Beth has worked as an occupational therapist at Scripps Memorial Hospital for 17 years. Peter has been the director of managed care for Advanced Diabetes Supply for the past 10 years. Their three children, Jessie, Mia, and Max, have enjoyed all the activities close to home – Junior Lifeguards, the library, and the swim team. Today, Jessie is a sophomore at UC Berkeley studying business. Mia, a senior at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA), plays lacrosse and has a black belt in taekwondo. She is considering a career as an elementary teacher. Their youngest, Max, plays soccer,

lacrosse, and is on the swim team at Earl Warren Middle School. “He also has a following of neighborhood families who compete for his babysitting services!” Beth said. The family enjoys the beach, playing games, road trips, hiking, and volunteering. They serve together for Casas de Luz, building small homes for families in Tijuana, Mexico. “Over the course of two days, the participants go to TJ and build the home from the ground up,” Peter explained. “You arrive on a Saturday morning to a cement slab, and leave on Sunday afternoon handing the keys to a furnished home to the new owners.” The kids have even gotten their schools involved in the efforts. Jessie was the president of the Casas de Luz club at CCA and served as an intern helping with fundraising and building. Max recently started the club at Earl Warren. Finding their perfect fit in Solana Beach was well worth the effort and wait. The family acknowledged they have so much to love about the location, the schools, and their neighborhood. “We have an annual block party that has been ongoing for 35 plus years,” Beth said. “And we started an Easter Bike Parade on the block for the last seven years. So much fun.” 

ILACSD’s 33rd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

Rotary’s 21st Annual Turf Bocce Tournament

Over 7,500 volunteers participated in I Love A Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) 33rd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at 110 cleanup sites throughout San Diego County, as well as a several supported sites in Tijuana, Mexico, in September. Local sites included San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach and Powerhouse Park, San Dieguito Lagoon, and Crest Canyon in Del Mar. Volunteers helped beautify and restore the environment by collecting more than 150,000 pounds of trash and recyclables, removing graffiti, replacing invasive plants with water-wise native plants, painting murals, planting trees, and restoring trails. Several elected officials visited cleanup sites in their respective districts, including Del Mar Mayor Terry Sinnott. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of hundreds of cleanups hosted by ILACSD in an effort to awaken passion and inspire action to improve the health and beauty of San Diego’s natural environment. Learn how you can get involved at www.ilacsd.org.

Over 240 players, friends, and volunteers came out for the Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary Club’s 21st Annual Turf Bocce Tournament at the Surf Cup Sports Park in October. Solana Beach Mayor Mike Nichols and Councilmember David Zito opened the tournament by challenging Del Mar Mayor Terry Sinnot and Councilmember Sherryl Parks to the first game. The Solana Beach team ultimately prevailed and earned bragging rights until next year’s tournament. Nearly 100 other teams played on 30 bocce courts. Jeff Neufield and Bill Seifen scored first place, Matt Van Meeteren and Seth Teater came in second, and Mike Price and Jon Dwyer won the consolation bracket. The event also included lunch and a silent auction, and raised more than $40,000 for major beneficiaries Reality Changers and Just in Time for Foster Youth, as well as other youth, community, and international programs. Bells of Freedom Serves Military Families Through its Bells of Freedom program, local nonprofit Dance Hearts kicked off the annual Adopta-Marine Family for the Holidays event in October, culminating in The Big Thank You event at Camp Pendleton on Dec. 3. The event serves local military families during the holiday season by connecting them with community sponsors that provide emotional, spiritual, and financial help. The sponsors travel to Camp Pendleton to meet their “adopted” military families, deliver gifts, enjoy a catered lunch, visit from Santa, and a door prize drawing. Founded in 2001, Dance Hearts is dedicated to connecting in-service military men and women to the community they serve through holiday family “adoptions,” emergency support, and transitional housing for displaced women and children. The Bells of Freedom program originated at Camp Pendleton, but is quickly growing chapters in other areas throughout the country. Learn more at www.bellsoffreedom.org.

The SaltDog Classic Beach Fest celebrated its third year at Seaside State Beach in September. The grassroots family-friendly festival featured a stage with live entertainment, vendors, a bubble station, gaming area, a local food truck, and lots of friendly dogs. “Each year the SaltDog Classic brings our San Diego community together for a day of festivities, and helps raise money for nonprofits that progress the world around us,” said event founder Elan Saltman. This year the festival benefited the Rollin’ From the Heart Foundation, a local nonprofit that works to improve the lives of disadvantaged and at-risk youth through active experiences like skateboarding, surfing, and camping. “As more people are exposed to local organizations fighting the good fight,” Elan said, “more people will help the efforts to conserve our great coastline.” Find out more at www.saltdogclassic.com.

Seniors Entertaining Seniors For more than 25 years, Script in Hand has been entertaining residents in senior homes throughout San Diego County, including Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, and other North County locations. The troupe consists of 12 senior men and women actors, four of whom live in the Del Mar area. “We are very motivated to reach those who don’t have a way to get to any kind of a theater production but who love to be entertained,” said group member Bud Emerson. “We tailor our skits to short attention spans and try to emphasize humor in everyday situations, especially when it involves the challenges of aging.” The group has a repertoire of over 200 scripts, many of which are nostalgic remembrances of the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. “The payoff for us, like most performers, is when we get laughs and the light of memory recognition in the eyes of our audience members,” Bud said. Cathedral Catholic High School Continues a Strong Legacy of Faith, Character, and Achievement by LAINEY KRAL | photos provided by Cathedral Catholic High School

C

athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots in the San Diego community. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus.

UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 80 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.”

The professional staff is well qualified to uphold that legacy. Most teachers have a master’s degree or higher in the subject they teach, and the entire staff strives to model the values of a Catholic faith community. The school is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and holds membership with the College Board. SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

“The various extracurricular programs at Cathedral have made this school a perfect fit for me.” “In partnership with parents, we form an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence,” said Principal Mr. Kevin Calkins. “It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing journey of personal and spiritual growth.” Over 1,600 students are currently beginning that journey on the dynamic CCHS campus. Facilities include 75 classrooms, 12 science labs, two computer labs, a robotics lab, a ceramics studio, a music room, a lecture hall, several special-use classrooms, world-class athletic facilities, a library, a lecture hall, a chapel and meditation garden – there’s a place for every student to discover their passion. Over 70 percent of CCHS students participate in one or more of the school’s 80-plus teams, and CCHS competes in the Western League as part of the San Diego City Conference. “The various extracurricular programs at Cathedral have made this school a perfect fit for me. There is a chance for everyone to find their niche, whether through the academic teams such as Mock Trail and Debate like me, or through athletics, drama, robotics, or art,” said Jake, a student in the Class of 2019. Nick, from the Class of 2018, agreed: “Only at Cathedral Catholic can I share my faith by being a part of our LIGHT (Living in God’s House Together) group program where we serve the San Diego community by feeding the poor, helping in underprivileged schools, and working with the elderly.” Upcoming events include the High School Placement Exam on Saturday, Jan. 20 and the 60th Anniversary Sock Hop on Saturday, Feb. 10. 

PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEL MAR GARDEN CLUB. WHEN WAS THE CLUB FOUNDED AND BY WHOM? The first meeting was in 1988. Monthly meetings were started in 1989. The DMGC was founded by a group of Del Mar residents with a love of gardening and a mission to beautify the city. WHAT IS THE CLUB’S MISSION AND HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FULFILLING IT? The purpose of the DMGC is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening and to contribute to the beautification of the community. We have planted and maintain five gardens within the City of Del Mar. Each year we have an informational program for the entire community. We support buses for children to come to the San Diego County Fair. We contribute to numerous other gardening projects around the city of Del Mar.

the City of Del Mar, including the Post Office, Library, Crest Canyon Rim, the Del Mar Community Center building on 9th St., and the garden by the lifeguard station. These gardens have been a consistent priority of the club since its founding. Of course, plant material and irrigation issues have changed quite a bit since 1988. The club itself has grown and become more diverse in activities. Originally it was all about the dirt-under-thefingernails kind of gardening and these days we have more social and educational activities. Another change is that we are now more structured with an active board of directors and we are affiliated with the California Garden Clubs, Inc.

WITH SEAWEEDERS GARDEN CLUB OF SOLANA BEACH PRESIDENT

ARE YOU STILL KNOWN AS THE SEAWEEDERS? WHY THE NAME CHANGE? We are! The club came together in 2004 when Donna Golich, Gerri Retman-Opper, and others adopted the task of maintaining a community garden section of the Coastal Rail Trail. Since the effort involved a lot of weeding, by the sea...well, you can see why the name fits. PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SEAWEEDERS GARDEN CLUB OF SOLANA BEACH. WHEN WAS THE CLUB FOUNDED AND BY WHOM?

Briefly, it’s worth noting that the history of Solana Beach is dependent on the import of fresh water. Although we are flanked by beautiful lagoons with the Pacific Ocean at our front door, it wasn’t until Lake Hodges was filled and fresh water was piped to La Colonia de Eden Gardens that the city could begin to be developed, initially to house the Mexican-Americans who worked on neighboring orchards, ranches, and farms. These included flower fields along the south banks of San Elijo Lagoon and dahlia and orchid farms astride Nardo Ave., some of which remain today. The club’s history is intertwined with the city’s development of landscaping and gardening opportunities. In fact, our roots date to the 1950s when the Women’s Civic Club formed to focus on the beautification of Solana Beach. More recent projects include not only the Coastal Rail Trail, but also the train station property, the welcome sculpture and planting

at our eastern gateway at Lomas Santa Fe and Highland Dr., and an update of the landscaping at the U.S. Post Office at 153 South Sierra Ave. As a local landscape designer, I, along with my friend Sandy Parish, formally revived the SeaWeeders in May 2012, rallying other gardening enthusiasts around the goal of helping to beautify and maintain our civic spaces. The group now counts about 80 registered members. WHAT IS THE CLUB’S MISSION AND HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FULFILLING IT? Our mission is to promote sustainable beautification of the City of Solana Beach through social interaction, garden education, and home and civic enrichment. In addition to our hands-on volunteer work, we host regular meetings to feature local gardening and agricultural experts and share our own gardening experiences and information. We host a poinsettia sale each December to raise funds for beautification projects.

KAT IE P E L ISE K

HOW HAS THE CLUB CHANGED OR DEVELOPED SINCE IT WAS FOUNDED? Membership has grown substantially over the past five years, during which we also experienced our severe, statewide drought. We learned a lot together about water-wise gardening and how to renovate landscapes for sustainable beauty. If the club has a motto, it’s probably “don’t forget to mulch!” WHAT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES IS THE CLUB INVOLVED WITH? CAN YOU ELABORATE ON SOME OF THE PROJECTS THE CLUB HAS WORKED ON IN THE PAST? Our monthly meetings include both educational discussions and gardening projects. For example, we gather evergreen and other cuttings from members’ yards and spend an evening making holiday wreaths together. Our SeaWriters subcommittee submits monthly gardening tips published in the Solana Beach Sun. In addition, SeaWeeders regularly participate in landscape planning,

planting, and maintenance efforts around the city. Most recently, we teamed with the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy to improve the North Rios Trailhead access area, creating a stone wall sitting area and planting hardy, native plants. We completed an extensive landscape renovation at the U.S. Post Office on Sierra in 2014 and gather there quarterly with rakes, shovels, and shears to keep the grounds weeded and pruned. Our members also volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club at their La Colonia educational garden, as well as their Center for a Healthy Lifestyle garden. And Donna Golich loves company during her weekly Thursday afternoons tending the Coastal Rail Trail community

section, across from City Hall! HOW DOES THE SEAWEEDERS GARDEN CLUB STAY CONNECTED WITH THE SOLANA BEACH COMMUNITY? DO YOU HOST OR PARTICIPATE IN REGULARLY OCCURRING EVENTS? DO YOU PARTNER WITH OTHER LOCAL GROUPS? As earlier noted, the SeaWeeders are intertwined with the development of Solana Beach and we operate under the umbrella of the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society, with whom we share many members and projects. Our noted local botanical illustrator, Irina Gronborg, recently completed a Solana Beach history coloring book to be shared with local third graders when they visit the city’s heritage museum. We also work closely with the City of Solana Beach, local branches of the San Dieguito Boys & Girls Club, and the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy. WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE CLUB MEET? We meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at the Fletcher Cove Community Center. Watch for monthly meeting details in the Solana Beach Sun and at www.seaweedersgardenclub.org.

WHAT ARE THE CLUB’S SHORTTERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS? We would like to continue to grow our membership with enthusiastic participants who enjoy contributing to civic beautification projects. WHY DO YOU THINK THE SEAWEEDERS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE SOLANA BEACH COMMUNITY? We live in a great city and we enjoy helping to keep it beautiful. Sharing local knowledge about the unique soil conditions, weather, and watering challenges that face Solana Beach gardeners is our passion. hen Hersheeta “Hershey” Kaur Suri was a young girl, her world was rocked when her best friend’s brother passed away from cancer at just seven years old. “I remember that day vividly,” recalled Hershey, who is now a freshman in college. “My best friend would not stop crying when I would meet her. Her parents looked distraught whenever someone would try to comfort them. My neighborhood did not give off a cheerful sensation, my life turned gloomy.” At such a young age, Hershey couldn’t understand why the situation couldn’t be fixed. “Years later, I still felt guilty, not because of what I didn’t do, but of what I couldn’t do,” she shared. This incident stirred up a passion inside of Hershey so strong that she has since dedicated herself to raising awareness about cancer and doing what she can to help those affected by it. “I believe that if I have the time and resources to make a difference, then I am going to try my best and help those who need it,” Hershey said. Hershey – who has lived in the Del Mar/Carmel Valley area since the age of four – attended Francis Parker School for middle and high school. “I made my lifelong friends, established important connections, and was fortunate to gain invaluable memories,” shared Hershey. It was while she was at Francis Parker that Hershey became passionate about giving back to those affected by cancer. “Francis Parker approached me with the opportunity to raise money for blood research,” she explained. “I immediately involved myself with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).” Hershey went above and beyond with her fundraising efforts, earning the title of Student of the Year in 2015 for LLS, and competing the following two years. “Over the past three years, I have raised $40,000 through fundraising events, Jar Drives that I have labeled ‘Jars for Change,’ and furiously emailing and talking to anyone and everyone I met,” described Hershey. Whether it is approaching elementary schools, holding dinners, or speaking to people at conventions, Hershey is determined to educate people and spread awareness about LLS. The most rewarding part about working with LLS, explained Hershey, was being a part of the community. “I knew each time I got another person who donated their time to listen to me speak about blood cancer research, I was being an advocate for someone suffering from these dreadful diseases.” Hersheeta Kaur Suri Hershey is no stranger to community involvement. She has been a Del Mar/Carmel Valley part of many projects through her church and is the U.S. representative Pomona College and international volunteer for UNFOLD, an organization that focuses Singing, acting, dancing, public on teaching adolescents living in the slums of India about body image, speaking, advocating puberty, and sanitation. “I was an officer of my high school drama club, the co-captain of our mock trial team, and co-president of the Indian culture club,” added Hershey. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society As she navigates her freshman year at Pomona College, Hershey LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to looks forward to her future. “I want to be there for people who are treatments for blood cancer patients, and to improve unfairly treated by the evils living in our world – greed, jealousy, the quality of life of patients and their families. disease, death, and depression,” she said. “For a while I thought www.lls.org/san-diego-hawaii law school was the way to go in order to complete this goal, but now I realize my options are boundless.” 

r. Tarkan Sidal of Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) and his team take pride in taking the stress and discomfort out of oral and maxillofacial procedures for their patients. “We believe in traditional values such as excellent customer service and personalized attention. Your comfort tops our list of priorities, and we will fully explain the necessary procedures and answer any questions our patients might have. Creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere is of utmost importance to us, and we are committed to providing each patient with quality care in a courteous, professional, and thorough manner,” Dr. Sidal proclaimed. The Torrey Pines OMS office handles all mouth, teeth, and facial region procedures such as dental implant surgery, bone grafting, wisdom teeth removal, corrective jaw surgery, and more. Dr. Sidal also diagnoses and treats orofacial pain, facial injuries/fractures, and oral cancer and biopsy, and he can expertly rebuild bone structure with minimal surgical intervention. Most of the surgeries are completed in the comfort of his office. In the event that a hospital stay is required, Dr. Sidal is on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Sharp Memorial Hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital, and Scripps Clinic. With many years of experience and education under his belt, Dr. Sidal obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from UC San Francisco, accomplished his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency Tarkan Sidal, DDS, MD at the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The 4th Annual Solana Beach Sunset 5K Run/Walk and Wellness Expo drew over 800 participants of all ages to Fletcher Cove in October. Racers enjoyed views of the coastline in Southern California’s only sunset 5K on the beach, filled goodie bags with samples from healthy local vendors, and listened to live music by 760 Union Band when they finished. The event raised more than $70,000 for Champions for Health’s diabetes prevention program, Jump Start for Health. Community Support

SMALL BUSINESSES GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON photos by Lea Tani Photography

S

ince 1979, nonprofit Community Resource Center (CRC) has been serving North County San Diego residents in need, particularly households that struggle

with safety, stability, self-sufficiency, homelessness, and domestic violence. CRC provides critical assistance through its domestic violence prevention and intervention programs, integrative services which include homelessness prevention and emergency housing, food and nutrition program, and counseling services. Each year as the holidays approach CRC hosts Holiday Baskets, San Diego’s largest distribution program, providing a dignified and free shopping experience for local families and individuals in need. Now in its 35th year, over 1,500 low-income households will receive basic necessities, a holiday meal, and a few gifts. In order to make Holiday Baskets possible, CRC depends on support from other local businesses. Among these is El Camino Bike Shop, which voluntarily restores gently used bicycles to be given away as free gifts to children at the Holiday Baskets event; more than 400 bikes were given away last year. Gems of La Costa is another local supporter, which displays a “charity charge jar” in their store for patrons to contribute. Charity jar donations help provide holiday meals for families who attend Holiday Baskets. Gems of La Costa is also sponsoring CRC’s Jingle and Mingle Fundraiser on Dec. 7. CRC Board of Directors member Carl Wright owns Encinitas’ Lotus Café, which has donated a portion of its profits to CRC for many years. “My wife and I see it as a very important duty to serve those less fortunate in our

community,” Carl said. “As the owners of Lotus Café restaurant, we play a role in the community on an economic level, but it was also important to me to play a role with the most vulnerable members in our community on a personal level, too.” Other local businesses that give back to the community and support CRC include JW Floor Covering, KRC Rock Landscape Supply and Building Materials, Cut Loose Solana Beach, ETC Building & Design, and Dudek. This year’s Holiday Baskets distribution will take place on Dec. 15, 16, and 17 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Grand Stand. For more information about the program, including a wish list of most-needed items, call 760-230-6501 or visit crncc.org/holidaybaskets. 

Community and Schools Matter to Buyers N

ow that summer is over and schools are in session, we are wondering: How important are schools and the community involvement when looking to purchase a home? According to CAR, 78% of potential home buyers who plan to buy within the next five years care about the community they plan to become a part of. Once they become part of the community they plan to do more to help the community. There is a vested interest. Also, 76% of current home owners feel a deeper sense of community where they are currently living. So, community matters! When it comes to schools, more than 75% of parents say their child’s education is an important part of the search for a home. And 53% of those buyers will buy a new home in a specific neighborhood to get their child into a better school according to CAR. It also looks as though the ranking of the school is more important than the proximity to the school. More than 25% of those parents will make the move during the school breaks.

We would suggest that potential buyers do their homework before deciding where they want to live. Check out the area, read about potential development, talk to people who live in the area, and also talk with the school that your child may be attending to make sure this is the right choice for you and your family. WINTER

LIGHTS Enjoy the Sights and Lights this Season in the Best-Decorated Local Neighborhoods by LAINEY KRAL

A

s the weather turns colder, San Diegans pull boxes out of storage and get ready to brighten up the winter season. The tradition of decorating homes with electric lights began taking off in the 1960s as a next step from decorated Christmas trees, and has since spread around the world. Colorful holiday and seasonal decorations can be found in most San Diegan neighborhoods, but some streets stand out for their over-the-top festive displays. Wait until the sun goes down and bring the whole family for a tour of one – or more – of these twinkling destinations.
