Prom... Already?
I
must have been in denial. How could my daughter be old enough to go to prom? Where did the time go? I’m pretty sure that my wife and I were walking her into her first day of kindergarten class a couple of years ago. Apparently all of this sort of snuck up on me. How is it possible to have your oldest child go from diapers, to learning how to ride a bike, to having their first slumber party, to going to their prom – all in a few years? Well, that’s certainly how fast it seems that time has gone by in our household! To say that seeing our beautiful daughter all dressed up, smiling and laughing with her longtime friends and their dates, taking pictures, and getting ready to go to their prom had an impact on my wife and I would be an incredible understatement. As it turns out, I believe it was just as much of a coming of age moment for us as it was for our daughter. How in the heck did time go by so fast? Sure, I knew that it was coming. Our daughter’s date did a great job when he asked her to prom (I guess the process of asking someone to prom is a much bigger ordeal than it used to be in my day). My wife and daughter had spent several weeks searching for dresses and preparing for the event. I participated and offered my opinion when they would let me.
Then, out of nowhere, via text message from my wife and daughter, I received “the” photo of the dress that they were about to purchase. She looked beautiful. She looked all grown up. With mixed emotions, I reluctantly texted my approval. Reality check! Doesn’t this mean that I’m getting old too? How in the world did this happen? My wife and I had the privilege of joining a bunch of other parents to take photos of our kids and their prom dates before they all left for the event. We visited with parents that we have known for years. We saw many familiar faces of kids – all dressed to impress – that we have known since early elementary school. There were hugs. There were smiles. There was even an occasional tear as we all looked on and participated – often reflecting back to our own high school years. After seeing the group of kids leave for the evening, my wife and I began our short drive back to our house. We had both realized that our little family that we have nurtured over the years was growing up. As a parent, we know that this is inevitable. We just didn’t expect it to happen quite so fast. alfway around the world, in the village of Kakamega, Kenya, orphaned students who had once been facing the cruel realities of their socioeconomic status such as, fatal illness and starvation, are now living healthier, fuller and safer lives through their remarkable school – a school that is thriving with the help of 92129 resident Kathleen Tucker. During a visit to the region in 2004 while working for a non-profit organization, Kathleen learned of the orphans and the needs of their school. “I became aware of a school for orphans in Kenya and couldn’t stand to watch them suffer,” she explained. “These children were driven by an insatiable desire to learn yet they lived (and died) in abject poverty; I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.” In 2011, with the help of her family, friends and colleagues, Kathleen founded TUCKLETS, a non-profit organization that strives to do two things: build the foundations for education and care of orphans; and fund U.S. projects that support and encourage volunteerism. Since that time, TUCKLETS has funded school materials, the construction of facilities, uniforms, meal programs and medicine, vaccinations and medical supplies. The group also raises awareness with youth all around San Diego County. From the start, Kathleen’s connection to the orphans ran deeper than just the empathy she had for them. She could relate to them, as well. At just 13-years-old, Kathleen’s mother and father passed away within a 10 month span, and Kathleen and her older sister, Kay, suddenly found themselves facing the world without parents. “From personal experience, I fully understand the value of education, the disadvantages of growing up without parents and the diminished opportunities available to the impoverished,” she shared. Luckily, Kay provided her with invaluable love and guidance, and Kathleen was able to use education to overcome hardship. “Kay instilled within me the belief that through education I could be successful, that education is the catalyst for change, and that education is an economic equalizer,” she explained. “I took her guidance to heart and as such have been successful both professionally and personally.” Has she ever. With a formal education, Kathleen has had an extensive career in information technology, as well as law enforcement. She has also had 11 years of experience in leadership positions with non-profit organizations, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Social Entrepreneurship and Change from Pepperdine University. With too many awards and recognitions to list, some of Kathleen’s most notable include: the American Legions Medal for Outstanding Heroism and the Congressional Certificate of Achievement for Valor in the Line of Duty. Kathleen has been a resident of 92129 since 1983. “I love the neighborhood atmosphere and the true sense of community,” said Kathleen. “Rancho Peñasquitos has a small town atmosphere with all of the amenities of a metropolitan area with access to open spaces and outdoor adventures!”

What’s New in
PQ?
by MICHELLE O’CONNOR-RATCLIFF Special to 92129 Magazine
I
t’s August, which ideally means you are enjoying sun, surf, poolside beverages, well-worn paperbacks and maybe even a vacation road trip before gearing up for back-to-school sales. Our fantastic schools are a major reason that many of us live in 92129, and your Town Council’s Health and Education Committee has newly minted plans for improving outreach and cooperation with each of the 12 schools in the Poway Unified School District that encompass the PQ community. Because each school is very unique, the Committee plans to start by creating relationships with each school’s principal, PTA and Foundation. Opening mutually beneficial exchanges of information should help to increase participation in both school and Town Council activities. You may already know about your local school’s activities through an online newsletter or school-site kiosk, but what if you don’t have school-aged children? And how do you find out what other neighborhood schools are up to? Our local schools put on fun, family events year-round that are often important fundraisers. The Town Council would like to help schools reach beyond their relatively small student bases and raise community-wide awareness (and attendance) for these events. In addition to what schools are doing, the Town Council has a few of its own activities for kids that would benefit from increased participation. Although not finalized, the Town Council’s youth-oriented events planned for the 2013-14 school year include: • October: Essay contest – “What living in PQ means to me.” • December: Town Council High School Student Representative applications due. One representative from MCHS and Westview with term of office beginning in Jan. • February: 4th and 5th grade Fiesta poster art contest • April: PQ photography contest with elementary and high school categories • April: Youth Community Service Award (YCSA) winners nominated – one per school • May 4: Annual Fiesta de los Peñasquitos community street fair • June: Individual school end-of-year awards ceremonies to present YCSA’s • Ongoing: Community service grant applications accepted for quarterly consideration With the help of the schools in the community, more kids will have a chance to hear about and get involved with these events. By establishing this two-way street, the Health and Education Committee hopes to pave the way to increased community participation – a goal the Town Council is determined to get behind. We encourage you to order your $10 Rancho Penasquitos t-shirt and/or become a community partner today. ¢

usic has been an integral part of my life from an early age and allowed me to express myself through a unique medium,” offered Jasmine Wang, a 92129 resident and student at Westview High School. Jasmine, who has been playing the violin since 4th grade has been extremely successful in her musical endeavors. Now, as she prepares for her senior year, Jasmine is committed to integrating her passion for music into her future. Jasmine’s interest in music first began around age four when she observed her older brother Joshua playing the piano. “I remember him playing a piece composed by Kabalevsky and being completely intrigued and fascinated by the melodies,” she shared. But it wasn’t until she started private violin lessons in 5th grade that her abilities really advanced. “With the help of my private teachers Mr. and Mrs. Tseitlin and other supportive people such as my parents, I have been able to quickly improve my skills,” said Jasmine. Indeed she has. As a part of San Diego Youth Symphony (SDYS), Jasmine recently won the Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Concert Competition – a prestigious honor among her fellow musicians. Of her win, she said, “I definitely feel that everyone performed at such a

After high school, Jasmine plans on attending a four-year university where she will pursue a double major in music and science. “I hope to keep music with me for the rest of my life,” she said, “whether that would include performing in a prestigious orchestra or teaching other students.”

“
Sean is an amazing athlete, having been a Pop Warner superstar since he was five, to taking his team last year as the star quarterback through an undefeated season to the championship. Sean, having been a star baseball player/pitcher for RPLL for many years, has a TOC championship win under his belt as well. He is also the star on the basketball court having played for RPB for many years, and other teams such as the Mt. Carmel Sundevils, and most recently for the Black Mountain Ballers where he led the team to the championship last winter season. Sean attracts everyone to him with his wit, humor and general sense of joyful charm. He is truly a very special and beloved kid.” – Julia Kitts (92129 resident since 2003)

ur 13-year-old son, Sean, was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome on May 9. This is a debilitating condition where your immune system attacks your nerves, which can lead to paralysis of varying degrees. In Sean’s case, he was paralyzed from the neck down and on a ventilator and feeding tubes. A couple of complications during this time were very scary. We are happy to report that, slowly but surely, Sean is getting better. Recovery is a long process but with Sean’s strength, determination and positive attitude we know how this will end – with a full recovery. We are not sure how to even begin to say thank you. We live in such an amazing and supportive community. Recently, there was a “Walk for Sean” held in Sean’s honor at Canyonside Recreation Center and the outpouring of support was truly inspiring. Some of our very close friends put the entire event on in just six days. The Kitts, Leonard, Padiderio, Del Rio, Neal, Ratzlaff and Jackson families are all to thank for their time in making the event such a success. Their efforts drew almost 500 people and raised over $10,000. The people who came to support our family came from all different times in Sean’s life. There were Sean’s teammates, coaches, classmates, teachers, family and friends. Some we had not seen in years, some were friends of friends, and some were people we didn’t even know personally, but just came to support us. Sean will never understand the love that was in the park that day; the feeling was truly spectacular. To all of you, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Wranglers Square Dance Club Celebrates Student Graduation & New Class
T
he Wranglers Square Dance Club announced its 40th anniversary student graduation in June, with 18 students now able to square dance at a “Plus” level. The club began on April 9, 1973 when nine couples finished square dance instruction taught by Sherm Barth. Those couples quickly recruited others and graduated the club’s first “class” of dancers in September of 1974. There has been a new Wrangler class taught every year since, and this year’s class enjoyed their new dancing skills at a graduation dance at the Rancho Bernardo Community Center Gazebo in late June. Class members learn roughly 115 “calls” over a nine-month period, which qualifies them to dance at the Club’s “Plus” level. Club members serve as “angels” (dancing helpers) for the students during the Wednesday night classes. A new Wrangler class begins Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Rolling Hills Elementary in Rancho Peñasquitos. Currently the Club holds its dances at Rolling Hills Elementary School during the school year and at the Gazebo in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park from June through August. The club’s annual “Hustler Rustler” western-themed dance is held in November at the Poway Community Center. Dances are attended by people from all over San Diego County.
Wrangler Club membership has varied from the original 18 to over 130 regular club members in the mid-1980s. The club, currently 62 strong, has members from Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch and surrounding areas. In addition to teaching classes and holding monthly dances, the Wranglers also participate in community events, and do demonstrations to bring others into the activity. There have been Wranglers in Rancho Bernardo’s Spirit of the Fourth parade, Grape Days, RB Alive, the Escondido Street Fair, the San Diego County Fair and Poway’s Spring Fest Street Fair. The Wranglers also participated in a square dancing “flash mob” last November in Balboa Park. Recently a square dance “demo” was done at the 7th Annual PQ-NE Action Group Neighborhood BBQ/Picnic, and members of the club helped Del Norte High School students complete a “final exam” for their physical education course. The club is run by a volunteer board of officers led by current presidents, Mary Sundberg Whealdon and John Coffin. The Wranglers are an affiliate of the Palomar Square Dance Association. Visit www.TheWranglers.org and www.Facebook.com/WranglersSquareDanceClub for more information. ¢

len and Debbie Kirkpatrick have spent nearly 25 years building a life in San Diego. They've lived on a ranch in Poway and in a condominium in Rancho Bernardo. After raising their three children and helping Glen battle cancer three times, they
are happily settled in Park Village, in a home overlooking the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Glen worked in law enforcement for 25 years, retiring in 2011. "Glen is a three-time cancer survivor," explained Debbie, "now living

treatments and remissions has inspired him to write. "He has had several of the short stories he’s written published online," shared Debbie proudly. "He’s currently working on a non-fiction book on overcoming life’s obstacles in faith." Debbie works as the practice manager at the Peñasquitos Pet Clinic, where she's worked for nearly 25 years. Debbie and Glen's three children, Russell, 28, Trevor, 24 and Terrence, 19, all attended Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) and all live locally. Russell works in sales and is married to a fellow SDSU graduate, Carmen, a trauma nurse at Sharp Memorial. Trevor is studying at Mesa College and Terrence, adopted into the family in 2001, graduated from RBHS this spring. Russell and Trevor are both musicians. "For two years in a row both Russell and Trevor have performed live at the ‘Acoustic Café,' held annually to benefit world missions," reported Debbie. Despite having plenty on their own plate, Debbie and Glen have been heavily involved in their community, supporting Pop Warner football and RBHS athletics, leading a physically challenged support group in their home, working with the non-profit organization Hope Worldwide and staying actively involved with the San Diego Church of Christ. "We met in February 1980 at the Kettle Restaurant in Manhattan Beach, CA," recounted Glen. They were married one year later on Valentine's Day, overlooking the ocean off Palos Verdes. Now they spend most every Saturday on the coast. "Debbie and Carmen have fun shopping and getting pedicures together," described Glen, "and the three boys enjoy passing the football to each other, singing songs and playing music."

locals celebrated the arrival of Flag Day at Hilltop Park this past June, opening the festivities with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem sung by Jennica Vargas. The PQ Town Council and Recreational Council planned and presided over the event, presenting awards to community members in the latter part of the day. Community leaders in attendance included City Councilman Mark Kersey and County Supervisor Dave Roberts, while out-of-town visitors included State Assemblyman Brian Maienschein and U.S. Representative Scott Peters. Current, former and future members of the military alike were present at the celebration, in the form of the USMC-MCAS Miramar, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11388 and the Westview High School Navy JROTC. Also participating in the festival were local fire and police personnel, as well as Boy Scout Troop 648 and Cub Scout Pack 626. The variety of attendees at this year’s Flag Day celebration contributed to its success and interest to the public.

About the Chef Name of Chef: Lynn Chyi (A Top 15 Finalist on Fox’s hit show MasterChef) Age: 27 Community of Residence: Sorrento Valley, 92121 Hobbies/Interests: Cooking, photography, eating out and visiting local breweries and tasting rooms. About the Recipe: Skillet potatoes are one of the simplest yet most satisfying dishes you can make. The buttery and crispy potatoes can be the base of a million different variations. I chose to mix a little San Diego in mine by adding fresh salsa verde and a couple of eggs. As a bonus, the skillet keeps it warm for ages so it’s a great dish to serve to guests when they come over since timing isn’t as critical. About the Chef: Being a Christian, my faith is incredibly important to me. More important than food, than MasterChef, than anything. Every month I go visit my fiancee’s pastor (who lives in the heart of 92129) to talk about our future marriage and get counseling. It’s always fun, refreshing and something I look forward to. The neighborhoods in Rancho Peñasquitos are beautiful, well-designed and a joy to visit. ¢

Patrick Barnsley, 17, a member of Troop 648 in 92129, has achieved a goal that only 201 scouts have ever achieved. He has earned all of the merit badges offered by Boy Scouts. Compared to the more than two million boys who have earned the Eagle rank, this is a rare accomplishment. And according to meritbadgeknot. com, Patrick is one of only six who have earned a total of 135 merit badges including four Centennial Anniversary badges brought back temporarily to celebrate 100 years of Scouting (Signaling, Tracking, Pathfinding and Carpentry), as well as recently added badges including Welding, Search and Rescue, Kayaking and Game Design. Scuba, his last badge earned, was the most difficult and costly because open water scuba certification was required. Additionally, Patrick was the 27th scout in the nation, and the first in San Diego to earn the National Outdoor Achievement Medal, as well as the VFW Scout of the Year Award. He has earned the Kodiak Leadership and Order of the Arrow Brotherhood awards and also recently received the Pope Pius XII Catholic Scouting award. Patrick has served as a Junior Assistant Scout Master for the past three years, and will work at Mataguay Scout Reservation as the Outdoor Program Director this summer before college.

Where’d this magazine come from? Meet the
Team
In 2009, we launched our first community magazine. The goal was simple – to publish a local magazine that people actually wanted to read. Since publishing our original issue back in 2009, ZCode Magazines has grown to a family of 10 community titles, each focusing on specific areas of North County. The ZCode team, or shall we say, family, takes great pride at meeting our overall goal in every issue we build together. We all live locally in San Diego and we are actively involved in every one of the communities. Whether we are shaking hands, meeting people, participating in school, sports, organizations and philanthropic events, we are out there learning and sharing the good news about what’s going on in your community. Thank you for inviting us in to your home and being a reader of 92129 Magazine.
Derrick Breaux | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics and sales teams.
Tyler McElhaney | Creative Director The nickname “Tynology” can almost describe my obsession with the latest, greatest, newest, most exclusive “thing.” At the ZCode office one can usually find me designing covers, playing with cameras, editing photos, redesigning websites, searching for “that one” cable, fixing computers and re-redesigning websites.
Tara Pritchett | Editor Born and raised in San Diego, I’m a mom to three beautiful daughters and a spunky golden retriever. I have spent over 14 blissful years married to the love of my life where every day brings us adventure and joy. A daily run keeps me happy. At the office one can find me giddy about upcoming feature stories and excited about the inspirational and community-driven people who I have the privilege to meet on a daily basis.
Sarabeth McElhaney | Associate Editor As a San Diego transplant from the City of Good Neighbors, I am constantly falling deeper in love with my “new” home every day. ZCode has helped me discover everything there is to offer in our bountiful region of the west coast. At the ZCode office one can usually find me sorting through the mountain of news and events in our area. You know I mean business when my hair is tied up in a messy bun.
Jessica Breaux | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.

Katie Mott | Senior Graphic Designer Originally from Indiana, the pull of the ocean got me out west. I have happily lived in San Diego 5 years now, and if I’m not in the office, I can be found soaking up the sun at the beach, kayaking, playing with my pup or traveling to faraway places every chance I get. At the ZCode office one can usually find me rallying around everyone to hit our deadlines!
Mani Salazar | Graphic Designer San Diego born and bred, I’ve been to 49 states and wouldn’t live anywhere else! (Alaska is #50). Married for two years to my beautiful wife, we enjoy traveling and going on as many adventures as possible. I’m blessed to design for a living – it’s definitely my passion. At the ZCode office one can usually find me staring wide-eyed at the monitor, eating sunflower seeds, being extremely OCD with my designs or trying to sneak in as much hand-lettering as possible. Who says we have to grow up?!
Traci Sally | Graphic Designer I recently moved to Carlsbad from Philadelphia checking off a landmark goal on my bucket list to make a home by the ocean. I’ve been designing for the past 10 years and can’t imagine doing anything else. Outside work I trade my mouse for a paintbrush or my woodblock press and enjoy spending time on the local beaches. At the office one can find me creating smartly balanced ads and layouts fueled by a giant Starbucks iced coffee (venti, no room with an extra shot, shaken)
Heather Lockwood | Production Coordinator I am a mother to two wonderful boys, and a wife to the love of my life of 16 years, with over nine pets; dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and fish. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.
Sally O’Neill | Production Coordinator I am the proud mother of a fun-loving teenager. When I’m not perusing college sites online or on another college tour, I like taking long walks with my husband, friends and my dog, Rascal. Cooking, entertaining and dining out are favorite pastimes as well. At ZCode, I work closely with advertisers and our graphics, sales and editorial departments. My nickname is “Office Mom.” I love taking care of our amazing team.
Heather Reynolds | Senior Marketing Consultant It had always been a dream of mine to live and work by the beach in Del Mar, and now I’m living it! The concept of a rodeo in Poway began when two Poway Valley Riders Association (PVRA) members, John Walker and Jack Miller, put their heads together. It took them several years and a trip to the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City to prepare and make all of the necessary arrangements to sponsor a sanctioned Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rodeo in Poway. Through their efforts, members of the PVRA, the Lions Club and the Poway Chamber of Commerce, the Poway Rodeo Committee was formed and the first Poway Rodeo was produced in 1973. This year, the Poway Rodeo will continue to feature the traditions of the Old West and cowboy heritage while honoring 41 years of the Poway Rodeo. The Poway Rodeo, held on Sept. 27 and 28 this year, has established itself as a mustdo annual event that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Old Poway Park
When retired Army Colonel John S. Porter settled in Poway in 1948, he had a dream to revitalize Old Poway and make it a place for the community to come and enjoy the old west. Through the years, he acquired and built the beginnings of a historic village to include the purchase of the 1907 Baldwin No. 3 Steam Locomotive and a halfmile track. When he died in 1979, he had not completely fulfilled his dream of a fully operating historic village. In
1986, the City purchased the 4.75-acre Porter estate and Steam Locomotive, and its rail. From there, Old Poway Park was built. Historic buildings from various locations in Poway were brought to the site and restored and the park officially opened in July of 1993. Now, visitors can see life as it once was at the turn of the 20th century. While you’re there, ride the vintage 1907 Baldwin No. 3 Steam Locomotive, visit the Heritage Museum and Nelson House, tour historic buildings, dine at the popular Hamburger Factory or just enjoy a picnic with family and friends.

It is of a stress-ribbon design, the longest of its type in the world, and only the sixth to have been built in the United States. This design was chosen for having the least impact on environmentally sensitive habitats in the construction area. This span is officially named the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge, after a retired planning commissioner. Lake Hodges Bowls Club To promote the sport of bowls and the spirit of fellowship, good sportsmanship and friendly rivalry among its members. www.lakehodgesbowlsclub.com; hodgesbowls@gmail.com Tuesday & Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday & Sunday at 9:30 a.m. When established, the youth league will play on Sunday mornings.
here's some fierce competition brewing at the Lake Hodges Bowls Club, but you may not have noticed. Club President, Georgie Deno described: "As we embarked on our effort to revive the LHBC, the most frequent comments we heard from people in the community were that they had never heard of lawn bowls or that they didn’t even know we were here." So Georgie Deno and her Vice President, Melanie Vizenor have spent the last year working to change that. Never played lawn bowling yourself? As Georgie explained, "The object is to roll an elliptical ball (called a bowl) down the green toward a small white ball, called the 'jack,' and land closer than your opponent. Where it gets tricky," Georgie added, "is in the arc that the bowl takes in arriving at its destination." The Lake Hodges Bowls Club, or LHBC, manages two greens in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park, including the only lighted green in San Diego County. After grant and foundation funds were exhausted last fall, the club was considering closing its doors. "Melanie and I visited the club
premises and were startled at the largely excellent condition of the facility," remembered Georgie. "Basically, all that was needed was members! I looked at Melanie and said, 'We can’t just let this club slip away. How hard do you want to work?' Now the club is thriving, supported wholly by member dues." The LHBC hosts games all year round and welcomes players ages 12 and up. As their website aptly explains, "Neither youth nor strength will help you achieve stardom in the game of bowls. It's a game that relies on consistency of delivery and outsmarting your opponent." Georgie elaborated, "Since bowls is a finesse rather than a strength sport, people of all ages and both genders can, potentially, compete equally with one another." That's just one reason Georgie likes it. "I’ve never been a very athletic person," admitted Georgie, "but here was something that afforded the chance to play a competitive sport and get to know new people." Come on out and join her for a free lesson or host a group event. "We are always happy to welcome people to try bowls," assured Georgie.

t all started with AP Chemistry, where Jason Ge’s teacher encouraged him to compete in the Chemistry Olympiad. In his first year competing, Jason became the only freshman finalist among 20 students at nationals. A year later, he advanced even further, joining the top four students in the nation as they comprised Team USA and took home the silver medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad. However, Jason, now an incoming senior at Westview High School, took home more than just the medal. “I witnessed a few experiments that a professor demonstrated during nationals and realized that using science to perform a show could have great potential for young kids,” explained Jason. Last summer, Jason began outlining his vision for a nonprofit organization – one that would make learning exciting to young students through science-based magic shows and hands-on activities. With this, in August 2012, Catalyst for Success was born. Since then, the organization has made significant strides. After recruiting a few classmates who shared his passion for
science, Jason began contacting elementary schools about bringing assemblies to the students. “At the beginning, one of the biggest struggles was that we did not have any credibility or name recognition.” Finally, in February, the principal of Sundance Elementary School, Bob Rodrigo, took a chance and let Catalyst for Success come perform a show. “It was a huge success and from then on, contacting schools was much easier,” shared Jason. As of today, Catalyst has reached over 11,000 students with 15 schools in the Poway, San Diego, Chula Vista, Del Mar, and Oceanside Districts. Due to its great success, Catalyst also earned the support of an advisory board, comprising of Todd Cassen, the principal of Westview High School, Dr. John P. Collins, Poway Unified School District Superintendent and Dr. Marinda Wu, President of the American Chemical Society. But Jason doesn’t want to let the organization stop there. His next goal is to establish high school chapters of Catalyst and have them running at Westview, Del Norte and Rancho Bernardo high schools by the start of the school year. “Our ultimate goal is to promote STEM Catalyst for Success At-A-Glance education to as many students as possible. I know Full Name of Organization: Catalyst for Success that our program can be applicable to any high school Year of Establishment: 2012 that has students passionate Mission: Promoting STEM to young students about sharing science with Website: catalyst4success.org kids.” Jason hopes that with these steps, “Catalyst will Facebook: www.facebook.com/CatalystForSuccess become a lasting program Upcoming Events: Training Sessions with New chapters that continues to benefit Non-profit ID #: EIN: 46-1136319, ID #: 31522 our communities.” ¢

all at Mt. Carmel is always an exciting part of the year. There is a new enthusiasm to carry on our rich traditions both athletically and academically. In 2012 – 2013, Mt. Carmel added three more CIF banners to the 86 we have won over the past four decades. The 2013 – 2014 sports outlooks looks just as promising as the student athletes are working hard to compete in the Avocado, Palomar and Valley leagues. Along with competing at a high level, the coaches at Mt. Carmel are deliberate in following the CIF motto of pursuing “Victory with Honor.” At the core of each program
are the CIF’s six pillars of character; trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Coach Dennis McClanahan will guide the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams. The boys are coming off of a CIF Championship. Katie Fixsen returns for her sixth year at the helm of our field hockey program. She has built the program to a level worthy of CIF participation. John Anderson will be entering his third year as head football coach. He will be leading his team to contend for a fourth straight CIF appearance. Girls’ volleyball coach Shawn Back will be directing our girls in a tough Palomar

volleyball league. Coach Jim Wrage is the coach of the ever competitive girls’ tennis team. They are looking to make another deep run in the CIF playoffs. First year coach Ian Davidson is excited for the opportunity to return the boys’ water polo team to the CIF playoffs. Girls’ golf is taking on the challenge of the Palomar league, which ranks high each year. Please come and cheer on Mt. Carmel as they create more memories for the storied Sundevil athletic program. Will Rising Interest Rates Hurt the Market? by SCOTT VOAK
A
t the time of this writing, interest rates have been increasing significantly for four weeks. Rates are up over ½ a point and buyers are feeling the effects of diminished purchasing power. At today’s interest rates, an increase of one percent in mortgage rates lowers the purchasing power of a buyer by 10% (assuming they are putting down 20%). So, a buyer who could put $100k down and qualify for a loan of $400k can only qualify for a loan of $360k if rates go up a single point. In many cases, this is causing buyers to step back. Despite the fact that rates are still at historical lows, the recent rate increases have put buyers in a position where they need to lower their expectations; something that is not easy to do when purchasing a home for your family. On the other side of the transaction, I don’t think sellers in the San Diego area are going to get hurt by the rising rates – at least not yet. There is too much pent up demand. The rising interest rates are slowing some buyers down, but for the most part that just means fewer offers and not necessarily reduced prices. However, if rates continue to climb we can expect the market to eventually slow down. Rising rates do provide a headwind to the market, but the market is just too strong right now for them to cause a noticeable slow down. One thing to keep in mind as you try and decide how long the market will keep rising is that there are thousands of homeowners with subsidized under-market rates who won’t be selling anytime soon as their mortgage payment is now much lower than they could rent a similarly priced home. This means that those homes are essentially “off the market” and will not be offered for sale. This restricts, and will continue to restrict, the number of homes available for sale and keep supporting prices. ¢
