Thermal pools cut into the bluff of the Mississippi River in St Louis, MO. The rhythm of a planted forest registers below ground in excavated bathing areas that wind down and eventually deliver the visitor to the edge of the bluff overlooking the river.

The program hosts a food pantry, dining facilities, worker residences, administration, storage, greenhouse and growing fields. The built program is imagined as a buffer between river edge and site where the buildings are arranged linearly beneath a canopy that captures energy and shades outdoor spaces and roof areas. Water from the river is filtered and flows through reed beds that weave between the buildings and out to irrigate the fields. The building is placed here to energize the riverside and connect to a river walk extended from the city center. In this way, the building itself acts as a permeable filter and buffer to the river, re-imagining the nowdisused waterfront as a place of great potential and beauty and a life-giving source to the city’s food supply.

Final model is a series of layered planes surrounding a single ‘void’ space. Desintegrating earth is a light solid above. The layers beneath ground converge slowly to create a simple, deep volume while the layers above fragment quickly into many parts. Layers of clear plexiglass form the framework. At the plane of the original image, both coexist as solid contrasting components to a single filled plane.

drought

1. dry surface with extruded cracks beneath 2. inversion of figure ground from saturated and dense below to desiccated and disintegrating above 3. single instance of a system from saturation to fragmentation

‘Shifting from Lines to Surfaces’, a seminar in 3d and physical modeling. Investigating solid-void earth relationships; liquid to disintegrated dry. A 2d image is the basis for a 3d exploration and interpretation of a natural system.

Water imagined seeping between angular cracks in dehydrated earth as vertical lines extruded to create curved forms beneath. Layers created between these conditions to suggest a transition from dry to wet. This process is repeated, making a larger field.

exploded axon of surfaces

a precise cube of space vanished from within an angled body a self-obsessed object false shelter of distortions swallowing itself away every side points inward inside there is only out drawn into an empty focal point to be projected out at every warped side at it’s heart it disappears a stage at the still point every eye directed in and through exposed by the enclosure every direction a warped view pushed out, down,up,every way from you

IntraSpecter

a big fuss of frames tapered to an absent center the background is the fore composition incomplete with a hole for a core

A playpiece at the occupiable meeting place between spatial calm and distortion that is at once frivolous and thoughtful. It is a multiframe for an absent artwork. It is a folly, self centered and empty. Submission to Folly 2014, a competition held by the Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park.

SOKOL BLOSSER WINERY A new Allied Works Architecture designed tasting room for Sokol Blosser Winery in Dundee, Oregon that opened in July, 2013. I was involved in design studies, construction drawings and construction administration. The building is conceived as a carved block in a series of stepped terraces moving through the site. Constructed of cedar, the light, smooth interior surfaces are held within a rough dark-stained exterior shell. Carvings draw the view through the building to the vineyards beyond and host the must public spaces in the ‘voids’ in continuation with the landscape while more specialized rooms (library, cellar, kitchens) fill the ‘solids’. Angled surfaces and finishes pull the viewer’s gaze out and through the cuts to the building’s spectacular surroundings. COLUMBUS ART MUSEUM Allied Works Architecture was asked to submit a proposal for a new ‘kunsthalle’ and veteran’s memorial in Columbus, Ohio. I was involved in conceptualizing the projects and producing drawings, images and models for submission. The art museum is pictured here. The art museum is imagined as a simple box containing a series of stepped galleries that pinwheel from a central point. A courtyard open to the sky breaks up the composition at each level and anchors the museum to both site and sky. A perforated outer skin acts as a veil to shroud the heavier volume and modulate the light within.
