WE BEGIN TO ANSWER
This night is different from all other nights because on this night we remember that although we were once we were slaves to Pharaoh in Egyp t, we were taken out with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. If our ancestors had not been taken from Egypt, then we, and our children, and our children's children would still be slaves in the land of Egypt. Even if we know the story well and have told it many times, the more we tell it in great detail, the more we learn from it. This night is also different because once we worshipped idols, but now we worship one God.

W hen Pharoah let our ancestors go from Egypt, the Israelites were forced to flee in great haste. Although they had prepared dough for bread to take on their journey; they needed to leave before it was finished, strapping it to their backs. The sun baked the dough into flat bread called matzah. 2.
ON ALL OTHER NIGHTS WE EAT ALL KINDS OF HERBS; ON THIS
NIGHT WE ESPECIALLY EAT BITTER HERBS.
Our ancestors were slaves in Egyp t and their lives were bitter. 3.

We dip the parsley into salt water to remind us that Passover is a spring holiday. We dip the maror in the sweet charoset as a sign of hope. Our ancestors were able to withstand the bitterness (like maror) of slavery because it was sweetened by the hope of freedom. 4.

THE STORY OF PASSOVER
On Passover, we tell the story of the "Exodus" of the Jews from Egypt. The story begins with Jacob, one of the three Jewish patriarchs, and father of the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob brought his family to Egypt to be with his son Joseph, who had become a prominent leader in Egypt. Over time, the Jewish population grew throughout Egypt. Pharaoh, who was the Egyp tian king, feared that the Jewish people were becoming too influential and powerful. In order to weaken them, Pharaoh turned the Jews into slaves and forced them to build cities, erect monuments, construct roads and work in the quarries. Yet, despite this oppression, theJewish people continued to multiply. So Pharaoh decreed that all male newborns ofJewish mothers be killed.

As persecution of the Jews became unbearable, Jacob's great-great grandson, Moses, was instructed by God to go to Pharaoh and demand the freedom of the Jewish people. When Pharaoh ignored Moses' plea to "let my people go", Moses warned Pharaoh that God would send severe punishments to the people of Egypt if the Jews were not freed. Pharaoh again ignored Moses' request for liberation, so God unleashed a series of ten terrible plagues on the Egy ptians.

In order to protect the Jews from the plagues, God instructed Moses to tell the Jews that they should mark their dwellings with lamb's blood so that God could identify and "pass over" their homes. The holiday name "Pesach", meaning "passing over" or "protection" in Hebrew, is derived from God's instructions. After the final plague, Pharaoh agreed to free the Jews, who left their homes so quickly that there wasn't even time to bake their breads - they simply packed the raw dough to take with them on their journey out of Egypt. As they fled through the desert, they baked the dough under the hot sun, creating hard crackers called "matzohs". To commemorate this event, Jews now eat matzoh in place of bread during Passover. Though the Jews had been set free, their liberation was incomplete. After three days, Pharaoh began to regret that he had permitted the Jewish slaves to leave Egyp t. He mobilized his army; and chased the Jews towards the desert towards the Red Sea. When the Jews reached the sea they were trapped, since the sea blocked their escape. Then a miracle occurred - God parted the Red Sea, enabling the Jews to cross to the other side. Pharoh and his army chased them, but as soon as all the Jewish people had made it through, the sea closed uponPharaoh's army; trapping them in the waves and sweeping them away. Finally, the Jews were free.
