A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE 1ST CENTRAL COUNTY GROUND
FOR THE 2018 VITALITY BLAST W
We have an exciting group of T20 players and on paper have one of the strongest squads we have put together for some time. We all know having a good squad on paper is never actually much use in sport and all will depend on how the squad pulls together and delivers their skills under pressure from some other top-class sides in the southern group, however.
e extend a warm welcome to all our opponents – players, staff, board members and supporters. Hove is always special on a T20 day or night and I thoroughly enjoyed my first season here last year and believe this year is going to be even better. We are thrilled to have Rashid Khan and Tom Bruce here as our overseas players and very much hope they enjoy their experience with us in Sussex. They are part of an experienced and exciting squad captained by Luke Wright and containing a number of players who have experienced the biggest tournaments around the world – Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Jofra Archer, David Wiese as well as Luke and Rashid. We also have Jason Gillespie who coached the Adelaide Strikers to the Big Bash title this year in Australia. Despite the talk of the new city-based competition starting in 2020, the T20 Blast remains and will remain critical to the future of counties such as Sussex. From 2020 onwards, the Blast will be played before the new competition with all of our best players available and some places available in the new competition for wildcard selection if players perform well in the Blast. Players will want to be selected in the new tournament, but I don’t see it as competition to the Sussex Sharks Blast programme. I see it as more of a representative selection a bit like international programmes. We will fight hard to protect our T20 team and brand and make sure our best players are available. Thank you for your support this season. A special mention to all our fans and hospitality visitors. Your support is much appreciated by us all and we hope you have a fantastic time. Also, an enormous ‘thank you’ to Boundless our T20 shirt sponsor, and Sea Life as sponsor of our brand-new family stand located by the indoor school. Enjoy the match! OLLIE ROBINSON: MY BEST YEAR YET Adam Stenning catches up with the all-rounder ahead of this year’s Vitality Blast…
O
llie Robinson has made quite an impact since joining Sussex in 2015. On his first-class debut against Durham, he came in at number nine and scored a century in a Sussex recordbreaking tenth-wicket partnership with the late Matt Hobden of 164. The century for Robinson made him the first Sussex player in 95 years to score a ton on his County Championship debut: “It was pretty surreal to be honest. Obviously going into it I didn’t have any expectations and it’s just a bit of a blur it just all happened, but it’s a day I won’t forget in a hurry that is for sure.” Robinson also got his first five-wicket-haul that year against Warwickshire: “It all happened very fast that day, I got five wickets before lunch which in a four-day game is very rare. I think it’s one of those days where everything clicked and fell into place and I don’t think you get too many of them in your career. “ The 2015 season saw Robinson finish with a nomination for the breakthrough player of the year award, plus winning Sussex’s young player of the year award, but was it his best season?: “I
6
mean 2015 was the best year personally for me, but I think on a team basis we didn’t have a great year. As a player I always like to win games and do something to win games for the team, so I wouldn’t say it’s been the best year.” Robinson commented on Sussex’s start to this season: “I think this year has been our best year. We are only halfway through, we have a chance to go up from division two and obviously we haven’t started the T20 competition yet.” With Robinson being good with both bat and ball, would he describe himself as an all-rounder?: “Yeah since I can remember I have been a batter who can bowl, but since I have been at Sussex my bowling has overtaken my batting. “It’s something I’m definitely trying to work on and I’d like to back into the top six or seven of the batting order. I’ve not got the runs I should of, but hopefully I can sort that out in the second half of the season.”
Robinson has played in all three formats of the game, but which one is his favourite?: “I love four-day cricket I know the craze is all about T20 cricket, but test match cricket is what I have grown up watching on TV, Flintoff in the 05 Ashes for example. I love the longer form, it hurts more on the body, but I love playing four-day cricket and watching it.” The all-rounder has been lucky enough to bowl with Tymal Mills, Danny Briggs, Chris Jordan,
“Sussex is a really good club, this season under Jason Gillespie we have turned over a new leaf and there is a lot of love between the supporters, the players and the backroom staff. So, it’s really been a nice environment and a really good place to be.” How does Robinson rate Sussex’s chances in the Vitality Blast: “I am going to be bold and say we are going to win the T20 competition this season I don’t think you have to look much further than our bowling attack to see that we are very strong. “We have Luke Wright at the top of the order and Laurie Evans who has also really come on as a white ball cricketer, so we have a really strong side. We also signed Tom Bruce who loves to give it a whack. Rashid Khan is going to be massive for us, so I fancy our chances and hopefully we can perform and bring it home.”
Jofra Archer, Will Beer and Ishant Sharma, but just what is it like to bowl with them?: “Yeah, I mean it’s awesome. If you look at our attack full strength we have an international attack so there are not many better. “Ishant Sharma this year has been one of the best overseas I have played with and his enthusiasm and passion for playing and for Sussex was better than any of the overseas players I have ever seen. Obviously learning from him, Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer and Briggsy you take little bits onboard and learn from each other and try to improve.” Robinson is now into his third season for Sussex and he’s really settled into life on the South Coast: “Yeah I love it, I don’t think there are many better places to be in the summer than Brighton. I think everyone that you speak to that comes down for an away trip loves the place. www.sussexcricket.co.uk

STIAAN VAN ZYL: ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL H
Overseas players are not new to county cricket. Legends of the game have been coming here for years, going back as far as the likes of Sir Garry Sobers for Nottinghamshire in the 1960s.
e played for Notts for six consecutive seasons, and many others had attachments to a County that lasted several years. But in recent times, it’s become accepted that overseas players can be quite transient - a six-week stint with one county this season, a two-month spell with another, next. So, to secure a player of the highest international standard, to play in all forms of cricket for three seasons is somewhat of a rarity these days, and if you choose that route, in the words of David Lloyd, “You’ll want a good ‘un!” In Stiaan van Zyl, that’s exactly what Sussex have got. We caught up with him in the middle of his first real injury lay off, which is obviously frustrating him greatly, so what exactly is the problem for the stroke playing South African? “At the moment I’m struggling with my right knee. It came out of the blue, but the cause is just normal wear and tear. It’s happened because I play back to back cricket throughout the year, obviously back home in South Africa as well as here. I’ve been doing back to back seasons for eight years now, so it’s been quite a tough stint. Hopefully, I’ll be out on the field as soon as I can. I have to say it’s not nice sitting at home and watching the guys play, not playing or being part of the squad. In fact, missing that day to day activity is quite sapping mentally. I’m doing all I can to return, so hopefully I’ll get back on the field quickly.” You mention the mental aspect to an injury, is it as important to approach the injury positively as it is to deal with the physical side of recovery?
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
9
“Absolutely. In my whole career, this is my first injury, so I’ve been lucky in that sense. But it’s been difficult because I didn’t really know how to handle this first stint of not being part of the side. In sport, the mind is a big thing, so if you keep that positive then your body reacts to that as well. It helps you heal quicker. You really need to avoid negative thoughts. If you don’t, recovery could take longer because negativity makes the days seem longer and makes everything seem worse than it actually is. Supporting the boys as much as I can when they are at Hove has also been an important part of my recovery. So being positive and still being around the guys when they are home is all I can do now and that’s what I’m focusing on.” People may not know that you hold a unique position in Test Cricket history, by becoming the 100th player to score a century on Test debut. How does it feel to be part of a club that includes the likes of WG Grace, Greg Chappell, Gordon Greenidge, Javed Miandad, Virender Sehwag, Alistair Cooke and Faf du Plessis? “First of all, it was great to play for my country. When you are a little guy, growing up as a cricketer in South Africa, everybody wants to play for them. Then, to put the cherry on the cake, to score 100 not out in your first-innings, back on home soil, well, it’s a memory I’ll never forget. It was a great experience and it’s nice to be part of history and on a list of such great cricketing names. Personally, to be the 100th guy to score a hundred on debut, it doesn’t come a lot better than that. It’s odd for me to think that I’ll be the only ever cricketer to have achieved that, nobody else will be able to do it. I’m just very grateful that things came right for me that day.” In your third Test you had a significant partnership with AB de Villiers. What was it like batting with a legend of the game, did you feel under more pressure especially as you were new to Test cricket? “I was fortunate in my career to bat with some great players and in that first Test 10
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
I batted with Hashim Amla and we had a 150 partnership. He scored a double hundred, so I’d had a taste of batting in a big partnership with a top player. With AB it was just a case of me making sure that I got the one to give him the strike because you know what he can do when he’s on strike. When you’re batting with players like Amla and AB, it’s about watching the way that they go about their stuff. What you notice most is that they stay calm and just trust in their ability. If the ball is in their area they just concentrate on it and hit it, they make it very simple. Batting with them, they tell you to be positive and to enjoy the moment. That’s important to hear as a new player. When you are coming new into the side, you tend to forget the enjoyment factor. You’re on the big stage, and you tend to focus on all the other stuff that is around you. That means that you can forget about enjoying it. When you’re enjoying the innings, you are more relaxed, and you quickly start playing well. Personally, when I look back at
it now, It’s just great to think that I’ll be able to tell people that I batted with the likes of AB, Faf du Plessis, Amla and the rest of them. The big thing is their mindset and how they remain 100% positive regarding their belief in their ability. It was great to be a part of and being around those guys and watching and understanding them had a very big impact on me.” At the opposite end of the scale to cricketing greats like de Villiers and Amla, are the young batsmen coming through at Sussex. As a player who has performed at the highest level, do you see your role at the club to help to develop them? “Definitely. One of the main things of me coming here, having played international cricket and being experienced, means I’ve been able to help the youngsters. As soon as I came here, I said that I was quite open for that role. So when guys like Hainsy and Salty come for some advice, my door is always open for them. It’s great to see both Hainsy and Salty batting in the nets, because
you can see straight away that something is there. For both of them, it’s just a case of putting their innings together and doing it quite consistently because the ability is definitely there. It comes down to how many they can score over a period of time. They both had great knocks against Durham recently, getting hundreds. So the challenge now is to continue building big scores like that, but consistently. Even when I’m sitting on the sidelines, it’s still great to see young guys coming in and performing. It’s fantastic for the club.” Well, let’s hope that van Zyl doesn’t stay on the sidelines too long. Despite the recent success of the younger batters, I’m sure they would be the first to welcome back such a brilliant overseas pro as the modest and committed South African undoubtedly is. by David Brayley

BOWMAN’S AWAY DAYS: BRISTOL & CHELTENHAM Good evening and welcome back to The 1st Central County Ground for this Vitality Blast fixture against Gloucestershire. Special mention goes to all travelling fans who have made the long journey to be with us here in Hove.
A
s in previous Blast programmes, this column looks back at recent Blast trips to our visitor’s home facilities from a fan’s view point. In this piece we take a look back at trips to Bristol and Cheltenham. On Friday 26th June 2015, I took a half day holiday from work and travelled up the M23 around the M25 and along the M4 en route to Bristol. One of our young members, Sam, joined me on the trip west. He was excellent company and we talked about all things Sussex and cricket on the four-hour journey. On arrival in Bristol we did park up at a stadium, but unfortunately, it was Bristol City FC’s Memorial Stadium not the cricket ground. Cue a two-mile trek. The weather for a mid-week evening game couldn’t have been much better. Sun was still flooding across the pitch throughout the 1st inns. We sat on the far side under the flats and from what I can recall there was a large crowd in. Our hosts batted extremely well with Klinger scoring 61 and Howell a nice 25 not out in a total of 186. As Sussex wickets fell during the reply, home fans were in great voice. However, Luke Wright was just about getting going. He soon teed off, smashing sixes to all parts of the ground. With the stadium falling silent, except for muffled Sharks cheers, Luke was on the verge of something very special indeed. The Sharks went on to win with one ball remaining and our hero sitting on 111 not out. Around a dozen of us away fans broke into a loud and raucous round of Good Old Sussex by the Sea as Luke was hounded by the media. It was certainly a Max Boyce ‘I was there’ kind of moment. Sam and I were on a high all the way back to Sussex.
On Sunday 16th July 2017, lifelong Sussex fan, Paul and I ventured west in my old but cute green Peugeot 206. It was the first time that Paul and I had experienced a long away trip together. That relationship between us has strengthened and we now share a lot of the driving. Being a Sunday, traffic was very light and getting to Cheltenham was easy. The ground itself has commanding views to Cheltenham College and is surrounded by loads of eateries and beer tents. It terms of the game we watched Sussex reach 156 from their 20 overs. Then, out of nowhere, Monsoon rain fell for an hour and that was the end of that. Paul and I skipped out of the ground knowing that a point on the road was advantageous at that time. My lasting memory of that day was hundreds of people seeking refuge under the awnings of beer tents while heavy rain fell. Back to this evening’s encounter, let’s hope for great weather, an exciting match and, being biased, a close victory for the Sharks. Enjoy the match! Colin Bowman, Sussex super-fan

CHRIS LIDDLE:
VISITING OLD FRIENDS T
Chris Liddle spent nearly a decade of his 13-year cricketing career at Sussex before leaving in 2015 to join Gloucestershire, the team he plays for now. During his time on the south coast, Liddle established himself as an excellent limited overs performer for the Sharks, particularly starring in the 2011 and 2012 T20 competitions where he was Sussex’s highest wicket taker, claiming 38 wickets in 26 games over the course of those two seasons.
14
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
oday, Liddle returns to Hove as part of the visiting Gloucestershire side and the 34-yearold is looking forward to coming back to where he made his name. “I loved every minute of my [nine years at Sussex]. I’ve got some great friends that I have kept in touch with since leaving and I look back at that part of my career with pride really because I enjoyed my time at Sussex,” Liddle said. “I felt like I did some good things there, especially in the T20 blast. I was up there as one of the leading wicket takers for the club [in that competition]. It’s difficult going back [to Sussex] because I’m still proud that I was part of a successful era at the club.” As Liddle says, he has many great memories at the County. These include a home T20 quarterfinal win against current side Gloucestershire to take Sussex to their third and Liddle’s first Finals Day in 2012; his first T20 five-wicket haul (5-17) against Middlesex in the same year; his first List A five-wicket haul (5-18) against the Netherlands in 2011 and winning the County Championship in his first full season in 2007. “We played against a lot of big teams and had a lot of big occasions,” Liddle said. “There was a real togetherness at the club which went all the way to the supporters and even Sam on the front gate. It just made you feel really welcome and Sussex is a really nice place to come and play your cricket.” Liddle was Gloucestershire’s leading wicket-taker in the One Day Cup this year, taking 13 wickets in six games and hopes to continue his form in the T20 Blast. “I’ve always enjoyed white ball cricket,” he said, “Sometimes it’s a bit unpredictable, whether you bowl and don’t get any wickets or you don’t go so well and they hit a few straight up in the air. I hope I can take a few wickets and help the team be successful and if I can’t then I hope I can keep it tight at the other end.”
“There was a real togetherness at the club which went all the way to the supporters and even Sam on the front gate. It just made you feel really welcome and Sussex is a really nice place to come and play your cricket.”
He is also optimistic about Gloucestershire’s chances in the competition. “We’ve got Andrew Tye and Maxy Klinger to come in and Ian Cockbain, Jack Taylor, George Hankins who has been fantastic, Ryan Higgins who is dangerous and Benny Howell who is great with bat and ball in our side. There are plenty of players in our team that are matchwinners and if we can all put in a good shift throughout the tournament, I think we will be there or thereabouts.” by Matthew Cooper
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
15
STUART WHITTINGHAM: SCOTTISH SHARK Stuart Whittingham is only the second Sussex cricketer to represent Scotland, after Matt Machan, playing seven games for the nation. Although he did not play in their historic six-run win over England in June, Whittingham was part of that squad and describes that win as “amazing”.
“O
bviously, I was a bit disappointed not to play, but just to be involved in the occasion was great. It was a packed house at the Grange and the crowd really got behind us. To beat the number one ODI side in the world was incredible.” The 24-year-old seamer qualifies for the Saltires through his Scottish mother and hopes that the win shows people just how good Scottish cricket is. “I think [that win] can be massive [for Scottish cricket] because we just missed out on qualification for the World Cup after they reduced it to just 10 teams. This shows that smaller teams like Scotland can cause upsets and taking the World Cup down to 10 teams is a completely silly idea because then you miss out on those big upsets that people love to see in sport.” As Whittingham says, Scotland just missed out on a place in next year’s World Cup after rain affected their final qualifying game against the West Indies when it looked as though they were going to win. “[That game] was devastating. The rain came completely out of the blue. There was one massive cloud in the sky that came with ‘end-of-the-world’ rain and that was it basically,” Whittingham said, “I think we showed by our cricket how good we were. We beat Afghanistan, tied with Zimbabwe and were on our way to beating the West Indies. I think that was a massive statement by us to show our standard of cricket against the teams that we want to be competing against in the future.”
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
19
As one of only a handful of Scottish cricketers who play county cricket, Whittingham believes that playing for Scotland makes him a better player for Sussex, “[Getting to play international cricket] exposes you to that level above. It shows you how good you have to be to get to that level and it can only improve my skills when I come back to contribute to Sussex.” He has also enjoyed playing under new coach Jason Gillespie this season and believes the Australian has had a really positive effect on the side so far. “He is very relaxed and lets you get on with what you’ve got to do. He instils the confidence in you that you can go out there and perform and I think he has created a really nice and relaxed environment amongst the players in the squad.” Whittingham believes that the impact overseas signing Ishant Sharma had was important as well because he fitted in with the side very quickly. “I didn’t know quite what to expect when he came in but from the moment you met him you thought ‘What a great guy!’ and he led by example really. He trains hard, he bowls his overs and is always willing to talk to you about your bowling and about your game and then on the pitch he works hard and always puts in 100%. He was great to have in the side and great to learn off.” 20
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
In terms of Sussex’s Vitality Blast hopes this year, Whittingham is optimistic, “I think we have got as good a chance as anyone really,” he said. “We have got some of the best T20 bowlers in the world playing for us with Rashid Khan, Jofra [Archer], Tymal [Mills] and Chris Jordan and a lot of good batters too. I don’t think there is any reason why we can’t really be pushing to win [the T20 Blast]. It should be an exciting couple of months.” As Whittingham says, Sussex’s bowling attack possesses some of the world’s most in demand T20 bowlers and he believes having players who appear in tournaments like the IPL and the Big Bash has helped improve his game. “Working with Tymal [who has a] back-of-the-hand slower ball has been useful. He is a good guy to learn off and I have developed my own back-of-the-hand slower ball that I worked quite closely with him on.” “Because the game moves on so quickly, the franchise teams are first to pick up on the direction that T20 is going and the skills that you need to develop. Our guys then feed that back to us so it’s great to have them in the side.” by Matthew Cooper
SUSSEX CRICKET FOUNDATION:
WICKETZ
Wicketz is a community cricket programme, delivered by the Lord’s Taverners, which targets young people aged 8-16 living in areas of deprivation and hard-to-reach groups without access to sporting opportunities and the benefits sport can bring.
MORE SPECIFICALLY WICKETZ AIMS TO:
• Develop participant's physical and mental well-being • Promote positive life choices • Enhance the future prospects of participants • Increase community cohesion • Create sustainable community club environments
B
y establishing sustainable community cricket hubs, wicketz aims to provide year-round weekly cricket sessions with a focus on developing crucial life skills. Wicketz tackles issues that negatively affect its participants and communities. Through sport, it improves prospects of participants by developing their social and personal skills such as leadership, communication and self-esteem. This is achieved through reactive learning within cricket sessions, relevant in-house health awareness and the delivery of workshops from local and national organisations, on topics specifically targeted at local issues, including healthy living, gang and knife violence, rail safety and hate crime. In Sussex we currently run one hub session, this takes place at Bewbush Youth Centre. Here we have established a link with Crawley Community Youth Service (CCYS), who also provide several youth centers across Crawley. The programme uses sport as the vehicle to deliver the message and to better young people’s lives and prospects. One way in which we have already done this in Sussex is by encouraging the attendees to play cricket more in and out of school, this continued encouragement has in the
last month seen some big successes. One specific success story is regarding one young male attendee, this participant had not played cricket before and was not interested in coming outside of the youth center for any sport let alone cricket. However, with a bit of continued encouragement and some incentives in the form of wristbands and t-shirts he began to take part. As well as taking part in the sessions, this participant now regularly attends school competitions and is always the first there on a Wednesday ready to get outside and play some cricket. So far, the programme has attracted the attendance of over 25 young people, some of these attendees are now regularly playing cricket either at the Wicketz session or with their school. We are now well into the summer months and are looking for a big push in attendance as the schools break up, this will be a key time for the Wicketz programme in Bewbush. As the schools break up the young people in the area will have a lot more free time, it is therefore of huge importance that Wicketz gets a foothold in the community so the young people in the area have somewhere to go and have something to do. Sussex Cricket Foundation Youth Participation Coach, Jack Hyde said: “This isn’t traditional cricket, these games of cricket will be quick and easy to follow so anyone can get stuck in and have fun. The Wicketz hub will bring the heart of Crawley communities together, by providing free and accessible cricket. We also hope to be able to bring in coaches from other sports to offer variety.” If you would like to get involved with Wicketz in Sussex or would like more information, contact Jack Hyde at jack.hyde@sussexcricket.co.uk www.sussexcricket.co.uk

STRONGER TOGETHER 1ST CENTRAL is the proud ground sponsor of Sussex Cricket and partner of the Sussex Cricket Foundation. With offices based in the heart of Sussex we are avid followers of the team and were delighted when the opportunity arose to be part of their journey. We were attracted by the club’s ethos and long-standing history, as well as their strong community spirit that revolves around inspiring a passion for cricket. Their commitment to nurturing young people who display great talent and the drive to succeed in following their dreams resonates entirely with our own values which is why our partnership works so well. With Jason Gillespie at the helm and what many are calling the best bowling line-up in cricket, we’re sure 2018 is going to be a great success. We look forward to a fantastic year of cricket at The 1ST CENTRAL County Ground and we wish Sussex the best of luck.
