A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE 1ST CENTRAL COUNTY GROUND

FOR THE 2018 VITALITY BLAST W

We have an exciting group of T20 players and on paper have one of the strongest squads we have put together for some time. We all know having a good squad on paper is never actually much use in sport and all will depend on how the squad pulls together and delivers their skills under pressure from some other top-class sides in the southern group, however.

e extend a warm welcome to all our opponents – players, staff, board members and supporters. Hove is always special on a T20 day or night and I thoroughly enjoyed my first season here last year and believe this year is going to be even better. We are thrilled to have Rashid Khan and Tom Bruce here as our overseas players and very much hope they enjoy their experience with us in Sussex. They are part of an experienced and exciting squad captained by Luke Wright and containing a number of players who have experienced the biggest tournaments around the world – Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Jofra Archer, David Wiese as well as Luke and Rashid. We also have Jason Gillespie who coached the Adelaide Strikers to the Big Bash title this year in Australia. Despite the talk of the new city-based competition starting in 2020, the T20 Blast remains and will remain critical to the future of counties such as Sussex. From 2020 onwards, the Blast will be played before the new competition with all of our best players available and some places available in the new competition for wildcard selection if players perform well in the Blast. Players will want to be selected in the new tournament, but I don’t see it as competition to the Sussex Sharks Blast programme. I see it as more of a representative selection a bit like international programmes. We will fight hard to protect our T20 team and brand and make sure our best players are available. Thank you for your support this season. A special mention to all our fans and hospitality visitors. Your support is much appreciated by us all and we hope you have a fantastic time. Also, an enormous ‘thank you’ to Boundless our T20 shirt sponsor, and Sea Life as sponsor of our brand-new family stand located by the indoor school. Enjoy the match! BEN BROWN: KEEPING AN EYE ON THE BIGGER PICTURE Plenty of the talk about the Sussex Sharks squad before this season’s Vitality Blast began centred on their bowling attack. That’s not surprising, given that it includes, among other stars, four men who have starred at T20 tournaments around the globe - Rashid Khan, Tymal Mills, Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer.

B

ut Ben Brown has always felt it important not to concentrate too much on one department of the team and risk neglecting the other units: “It’s an exciting time of the season when the T20 comes around – you’re playing in front of big crowds and in our case this year, we have one of the world’s best spinners playing for us in the form of Rashid Khan. It’s really exciting and I’m looking forward to keeping to his bowling. “It’s true that we have what looks on paper a very good bowling attack but we can’t just concentrate on that and assume we will win games by bowling well. We need to field well and bat well too because in T20 you can’t have any weak area of the team.

“And we’re confident we’ll be a good side all round and will give a good account of ourselves this year.” It’s been six years since Sussex reached finals day and that’s something Brown is keen to see put right this time, but he accepts that the south group is very competitive and any side reaching the 2018 Edgbaston showpiece in mid-September will have to have been very consistent. “We started the campaign feeling we had a good chance of getting out of the group. It’s incredibly competitive, there’s very little room for error, but we want to progress to finals day and give the Sussex supporters a big day out. It’s always a great occasion.” Brown is captaining Sussex these days in the County Championship and One-Day Cup competition. But he will pass the armband to Luke Wright, something of a T20 veteran by anyone’s standards, for the Blast matches. And the 29-year-

old is perfectly happy with that arrangement. “I think it’s pretty smart planning by the club (to split the captaincy),” Brown said. “I’ve got a lot on my plate keeping, being captain, and captain of the club, and batting. Luke has a lot of experience and is the right man to lead us in this competition.” The bowling unit and skipper Wright are not the Sharks’ only big factors to consider in the Blast, according to Brown. He says head coach Jason Gillespie’s T20 experience will be huge too.

“It’s been amazing to have a coach of his profile working with us,” Brown said. “A lot of us have been here for quite a few years and it’s been great to have a fresh pair of eyes to take the club forward. In T20 cricket Dizzy has been there and done that – he’s won the Big Bash, for one.” Before Sussex turned their attentions to the shortest form of the game, the first half of their season had brought plenty of promise – and some outstanding individual performances, particularly by some of the up-and-coming members of the squad. The One-Day Cup group campaign began with two wins out of three for Brown’s men, who then faded and missed the knockout stages, while in the championship, wins over Middlesex and Durham left them handily placed for a late-season push for promotion. Brown said: “I’ve seen development in the squad. It was disappointing not to play as well as

we’d have liked in the 50-over competition. But we’ve seen young players scoring hundreds, in a number of cases their maiden ones, and taking wickets. Players are improving and it’s important for the club as a whole to see guys who have come through the system doing so well. “We have to be patient because not every game will be like the innings win over Durham at Arundel. The guys in the squad have all got a great attitude and in a way, it’s easy for me being their captain. I and the other senior players have a role supporting the youngsters and we’re happy to do that.” On a personal note Brown is looking to build on a T20 career which – before the current campaign – had seen him enjoy more than 60 innings, scoring 797 runs at a strike rate of 111.62 and an average of 15.03, with a best score of 68.

JOFRA ARCHER: MAKING A MARK M

It’s fair to say that Jofra Archer knows how to make his mark. On his first-class debut for Sussex back in July 2016, he announced himself to Sharks fans by taking 4-46 in his maiden outing for the club against Pakistan. He followed that up with a breezy 73 against Essex in his County Championship debut.

any cricket watchers were already predicting a bright future as an all-rounder for the youngster from Barbados. They have all been proved right. In the two short years that have followed, Archer has shot straight to the top, especially in T20 cricket where he has become one of the most sought-after cricketers on the planet. So how does the 22-year-old view his amazing journey and meteoric rise so far? “It’s been exciting to say the least. It’s all been quite surreal playing on the same team as some of the world’s greatest cricketers, having watched them on TV for three or four years. It’s also been a similar feeling when I’ve been playing against these top players instead of just seeing them on the screen. To get to compete against them, face-to-face, has been a really big change for me. It’s certainly made me appreciate how far I have come. It’s been such a good experience playing in tournaments that I have watched all my life and to be able to not just participate in them but to do well also, has been a very good feeling.” A person that has played a big role in Archer’s emergence has been Chris Jordan, who first alerted Sussex to his talents. So what part did Jordan play in Archer’s story? “Chris has been very important in my career. He is of Barbadian descent and a few years ago, he was in Barbados training with them. I was playing with the Barbados Under 19 team and every now and again, they would let us train with the senior team. One particular time Chris was at training on the same day that I was in the nets. He watched me for a little bit and then he eventually came over. He told me that I had been bowling well, and was generally encouraging to me.

www.sussexcricket.co.uk

9

We chatted for a little while and because I knew he was English, I told him that I had a British passport and wondered if he could do anything for me back in England. He said to leave it with him because he was going back to England a couple of days later.” But despite that potential option via Jordan, the twists and turns of professional sport meant that Archer almost joined another English county. “At the time, there were a couple of county teams that were doing their preseason training in Barbados, and one of those was Northamptonshire. I ended up speaking with them and they were really keen for me to come across to England. It was all arranged and I was supposed to go there, but within three or four days, Chris called me and said that he had spoken to the coach at Sussex, and it was all sorted for me to come to Hove. I’ve never looked back. Also, since I’ve been at Sussex, not only has Chris been the reason for me coming here, he’s also really taken me under his wing and helped me out. He’s been great to me.” Following Archer’s debut for Sussex against Pakistan in 2016, he ended up playing 14 matches in all competitions that year. It must have been a difficult transition to become a professional in England, playing so much cricket? “No, not really. I’d been in the twos quite a bit so, having played around the country for them, you pretty much know what you’re in for. You experience so much cricket that you know what’s going to happen when you make the breakthrough to the first team. I didn’t really find it that much of a big difference because most of the guys that you play against in the twos will have played firstteam cricket, so when I stepped up, it wasn’t really too big of a shock.” If the step up from second team to first team cricket wasn’t too much of a shock, perhaps the leap from English domestic cricket to the intensity of the IPL was. It seems that the IPL, with everything it has to offer, must have presented big challenges for Archer. “Absolutely. From a cricket point of view, you have to understand that every batsman can hurt you. Whilst that’s a challenge to you, 10

www.sussexcricket.co.uk

I guess that makes it very exciting too. One thing that it does is make you a lot more focused and switched on, whenever you step up to bowl. In terms of the whole atmosphere of the tournament, the crowds are a lot different to the ones we experience back here in England. Nothing really prepares you for the way that they are always screaming and shouting for you during a game. You really get to notice it when you go to the boundary - they are screaming at you constantly. The fans are so intense about their cricket, they even surround you when you are away from the game, at the airport or in the shopping mall. Playing cricket in India is such a different experience to anything else I’ve known.” With this being Archer’s second season of T20 cricket with Sussex, he must be excited about the strength of the bowling attack, so how does he see the tournament going for the Sharks. “We are obviously very strong in that department, especially with Rashid Khan joining

us. I think anyone that faces us will understand that we really have a formidable attack. It’s important obviously to take advantage of that and I’m confident that we will be able to restrict teams to manageable scores. I believe we are strong enough as a team to be able to chase down anything that we can restrict teams to. I don’t really think that we need to change much from last season. I think that we were a little bit unlucky, but as long as results go our way we should be alright. I’m really looking forward to getting started.”

So with a new coach, the world’s number one bowler and the expectation of fans following Archer’s success in T20 this winter, is he feeling any extra pressure going into the Blast with Sussex this season?

“I suppose a little bit, because obviously things have gone really well for me. I’m looking forward to working with the new coach, because as I missed early summer, I hadn’t had much chance to work with him. I’m also looking forward to facing Rashid in the nets so that I can get to see exactly how good he is. But whatever happens, you can’t let any of the pressure get to you because it might end up affecting your performance. Despite playing in many different leagues, it will mean so much to achieve success here at Sussex. I’m looking forward to the games starting and doing the best I can.” Well, there aren’t many cricketers around whose best is as good as Jofra Archer’s. If he can continue making the sort of impact he’s made since that debut against Pakistan, and has continued to make all around the world, Sussex fans are in for a treat in this summer’s Vitality Blast. by David Brayley

BOWMAN’S AWAY DAYS: THE ST. LAWRENCE GROUND, CANTERBURY Good evening and a huge welcome to The 1st Central County Ground here in Hove. Especially warm greetings to all Kent connections who have made the journey to be here.

I

n tonight’s column, we take a peek at two of the Sharks’ recent visits to Canterbury. This evening we look at a stunning Kent victory with an overnight stay at the Bat and Ball and a tense Sharks victory against the odds last season. To be honest there isn’t a better Friday night atmosphere than at the St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury … except, of course, here in Hove! When that place gets packed its exciting and, as a visiting fan, intoxicating. I was a Sharks T20 ‘ever-present’ in 2015 and the trip to Canterbury was the very first game. My mates, John and Bryan, and I booked a half day and took off down the A2. We decided to stay over and check into the Bat and Ball, an iconic pub just over the road. We had time to nip into town taking in a few pubs and the Cathedral. Come the evening start and the St Lawrence was packed and noisy. My father Alfie, who lives in Faversham decided to come and watch as well and our vantage point was the bar under the new scoreboard opposite the pavilion. Oliver Robinson, on T20 debut, made an instant impact with 3-35 and two catches out deep. However, Joe Denly, Sam Northeast and Sam Billings all batted really well as Kent posted 185. In reply it looked as though Chris Nash and Luke Wright might steal the points with an opening stand of 81. Mahela Jayawardene carried on the good work with a stylish 39. However, it wasn’t to be as Kent sneaked back into the game, with the backing of a partisan crowd. Even though we lost that night, which hurt immensely, we walked back to the pub knowing that we had seen a classic.

The 2017 match at Canterbury was just as exciting as that 2015 encounter but a Chris Nash knock of 73 paved the way for a Sharks victory. Earlier in the day John and I ventured to Sevenoaks to pick up a lift to Canterbury with travelling buddy Paul Elford. We had enough time to stroll around the city centre before walking up the New Dover Road. Once again, we took our place in the bar under the score board. Billings again batted well with a well-crafted 74 as Kent posted 163-9. That’s a tough run chase at any level but Nash was the hero for Sharks fans with 73 runs. However, even with that Sussex seemed to be on the back foot. It wasn’t until late on, with Ben Brown scoring 49 that Sussex looked like victors. With 6 balls to spare the ground fell silent, except for a few Sharks cheers, as Sussex eased to a very pleasing win. The excitement in the car going home was top rated especially when Paul played Good Old Sussex By the Sea. Colin Bowman, Sussex super-fan

A PASSAGE FROM INDIA

Michael Hellyer keeps track of Sussex’s representatives in the Indian Premier League and loves what he sees…

W

hile the County Championship and the One Day Cup were unfolding in this country’s spring and early-summer months, many miles away, the Indian Premier League’s 11th season was being played out – and many felt it was the competition’s the best campaign to date. The biggest T20 competition in the world was won by the Chennai Super Kings this year, winning it for the third time since its inception, equalling the record held by the Mumbai Indians. The Super Kings lifted the title after beating the Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the final. The IPL held special interest for Sussex supporters this year as three of the players you will have been watching in action for the Sharks

14

www.sussexcricket.co.uk

during the present Vitality Blast campaign flew to India to play in the star-studded tournament: Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, and Rashid Khan. The Sunrisers’ team featured Khan, who was a true star of the tournament, and Jordan, who featured once this campaign against the Kings XI Punjab. Afghan ace Khan, despite being just 19, finished second-highest wicket-taker in the competition, taking 21 in 17 matches, just three fewer than Aussie paceman Andrew Tye. Khan is featuring for the Sharks in the Blast and it’s not the first time he has played under Sussex head coach Jason Gillespie – he played for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League down under, lifting this year’s title. Fellow Sunriser Jordan only featured once during the IPL, playing against the Kings XI Punjab last month, and producing figures of 0-31. But the England international also played in the Pakistan Super League earlier this year for the Peshawar Zalmi, who eventually lost in the final to Islamabad United. Archer, meanwhile, made an impressive impact in his debut season for the Rajasthan Royals, who had won the IPL in its inaugural season in 2008.

The Sharks have a rich history with the IPL with players like Luke Wright, Tymal Mills and Ishant Sharma all having played in the competition on the sub-continent.

The 23-year-old took 15 wickets in 10 matches this year and will hope to continue the good form into the Blast. He had also impressed in the Big Bash League over the winter, guiding the Hobart Hurricanes to the semi-final. The Royals snapped up the Barbadian-born bowler for 72 million Indian rupees (around £800,000) in the IPL auction, and he impressed on his debut with figures of 3-22 against the Mumbai Indians. Archer also made headlines with a couple of sensational run-outs. The Sharks have a rich history with the IPL with players like Luke Wright, Tymal Mills and Ishant Sharma all having played in the competition on the sub-continent. Wright played for the former IPL franchise, the Pune Warriors in 2012 and 2013. The 33-year-old made seven appearances, scoring 44 in his final game for the Warriors against the Delhi Daredevils in May 2013. Mills played five times in last year’s IPL with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, taking five

wickets in the process. His best performance was 2-31 against the Kolkata Knight Riders as they were bowled out for 131. But that match will be remembered for the lowest score ever made in IPL history as RCB were knocked out for 49. Mills didn’t feature in this year’s edition, but had played in the Pakistan Super League with the Karachi Kings. Mills also played in Australia, alongside Archer for the Hurricanes. Sharma, who appeared in the County Championship and the One Day Cup for the Sharks earlier this season, has played 76 matches over nine years, with five franchises. His best bowling figures in the IPL was in 2011 when he took 5-12 for the Deccan Chargers against the Kochi Tuskers Kerala. It all shows that Sussex and their stars have formed strong bonds with the IPL and its ‘sister’ tournaments – and that will surely stand the county in good stead in this year’s Vitalty Blast.

TOM HAINES: ‘THE BEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE SO FAR’ Tom Haines was recently called into the Sussex first team for their Championship match against Durham as a last-minute replacement for Chris Jordan who had been selected for the England Lions.

T

he 19-year-old was playing was playing in a Second XI match at New Malden when he got the news he would be playing and the next day Haines scored his maiden first-class hundred, reaching 124. “[That innings] was probably the best moment of my life so far and an experience that I will never forget,” he said. Haines spent his entire innings batting with opener Phil Salt, who also scored his first Sussex century in the match. “Me and Salty have been on the academy together for two or three years, played a lot of cricket together and we know each other really well. It was really good for him to get his first first-class hundred. It made the day even more special.” That game was Haines’ first appearance for Sussex since playing two Championship games two years ago and the Crawley-born youngster believes he is a much better player now than he was in 2016. “I think I have matured. I was a schoolboy then, I was only 17 and in the first year of my A-levels. I have still got a lot of improving to do now, but since those matches I have found out things about my game, my strengths and my weaknesses,” he said. “I’ve got a lot more work to do with Yards [Mike Yardy] our batting coach, but I was definitely more ready this time. Those two games I played when I was 17 were a fantastic opportunity to break me in and help me see what first-class cricket was about.” One of the reasons Haines was chosen as Jordan’s replacement ahead of the more experienced Laurie Evans was his bowling. The teenager is a medium-pace bowler and bowled 11 overs for 22 runs against Durham.

www.sussexcricket.co.uk

19

“I have been working really hard on my bowling since I’ve come back from injury in the winter,” he said, “I was unfortunate not to get a wicket against Durham which would have capped off a good week. My bowling is definitely another string to my bow that hopefully the selectors can look at as being in my favour.” Haines signed his first professional contract with the county in October 2017 and has found the step up enjoyable so far. “I would say that the amount of work I am doing now is the biggest change I have noticed since signing pro terms because cricket is now my job.” “The amount I have worked to improve parts of my game shows that if you really put the hours and the hard graft in, then you can improve a lot quicker than you think. This is the first eight months of my career and the improvement from the start of the winter up until now is something that has shocked me a little bit. Hopefully I can keep that going in the years to come.” Haines is part of a very talented group of young players at Sussex right now, something he is enjoying. “I think that the senior players we have set very good examples for all of us youngsters to follow. I think there are some exciting times ahead 20

www.sussexcricket.co.uk

for Sussex with such a big group of young players who have enormous talent and potential. I am really excited and very happy to be a part of it.” Indian seamer Ishant Sharma spent some time at Sussex earlier in the season and Haines enjoyed the opportunity to train alongside a bowler with 234 Test wickets. “I got to face Ishant a couple of times but I never got to play with him unfortunately. He is a top overseas professional and he set a really good example. He’s obviously an outstanding bowler and he showed that for the club. When I faced him in the nets, I could definitely tell why he is such a successful international cricketer and it was a good test for me.” With the T20 Blast set to dominate the summer, Haines knows limited overs cricket is an area he needs to improve on. “I have got a lot of work to do on my T20 and one-day cricket,” he said, “Those two formats, T20 in particular, are not my strong points at the moment. Hopefully in the next few years I can really develop my game into something suitable for that format.” by Matthew Cooper

SUSSEX CRICKET FOUNDATION:

2018 CLUB COMPETITIONS

During 2018, the Sussex Cricket Foundation has run a series of competitions for clubs across the county. Clubs were invited to enter any of the following competitions – U9/10 Cup, ECB U13 National Cup, ECB U15 National Cup or the ECB U19 T20.

T

hese programmes are designed to provide fun, competitive opportunities to compete against local and countywide clubs with finals being played at some of Sussex Cricket’s more prestigious venues.

SCF U9/10 CUP

A new and innovative format for 2018 where this competition became 6-a-side and aligned to the proposed new ECB junior cricket playing formats where smaller squad sizes, shorter pitch length and tighter boundaries were introduced. Fifty teams entered this competition for 2018 which represents an increase from previous years. Teams were invited to attend one of four local competitions running at Helligly CC, Arundel CC, Horsdean and Three Bridges CC. The local competitions see teams playing a series of games with two winners from each qualifying for a County Final at The 1st Central County Ground in September.

VITALITY U13 & U15 NATIONAL CUPS

Knockout T20 club competitions that take place across the County between April and June. This year saw 31 teams enter the U13 competition and 22 into the U15 competition. Our annual Finals Day took place at Sussex Cricket’s Blackstone Academy Ground, sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College on Friday 29th June.

VITALITY U19 T20

This competition is run nationally to try to bridge the gap between youth and adult cricket while offering players a short exciting format of the game. The competition encourages clubs that enter to recreate the professional Vitality

Blast at their clubs by wearing coloured kits, player-selected walk on music as well as turning them into social club events. The design of the events is led by young players to give them the responsibility and ownership of the competition while encouraging them to get involved volunteering at their local club. This season saw 18 clubs enter who were split into four local leagues with the winners of each being invited to a Finals Day at Sussex Cricket’s Academy Ground in Blackstone on Sunday 9th September.

SUSSEX CRICKET FOUNDATION 6-A-SIDE COMPETITION

During the last three seasons the Sussex Cricket Foundation have organised an adult 6-a-side cricket tournament culminating in a finals day under the lights at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove. The competition started in 2016 with two qualifying hub events and 12 teams and was expanded in 2017 to 7 hubs with over 40 teams and 300 players taking part. The overriding aim of the competition is to raise the profile of Sussex Cricket in the local community and to strengthen the links between the recreational game and the professional game. It has also been the aim to encourage new and lapsed players back to the game by offering a short format which many people have expressed a preference for. STRONGER TOGETHER 1ST CENTRAL is the proud ground sponsor of Sussex Cricket and partner of the Sussex Cricket Foundation. With offices based in the heart of Sussex we are avid followers of the team and were delighted when the opportunity arose to be part of their journey. We were attracted by the club’s ethos and long-standing history, as well as their strong community spirit that revolves around inspiring a passion for cricket. Their commitment to nurturing young people who display great talent and the drive to succeed in following their dreams resonates entirely with our own values which is why our partnership works so well. With Jason Gillespie at the helm and what many are calling the best bowling line-up in cricket, we’re sure 2018 is going to be a great success. We look forward to a fantastic year of cricket at The 1ST CENTRAL County Ground and we wish Sussex the best of luck.
