A VERY WARM WELCOME TO EVERYONE TO THE 1ST CENTRAL COUNTY GROUND
FOR THE 2018 VITALITY BLAST W
We have an exciting group of T20 players and on paper have one of the strongest squads we have put together for some time. We all know having a good squad on paper is never actually much use in sport and all will depend on how the squad pulls together and delivers their skills under pressure from some other top-class sides in the southern group, however.
e extend a warm welcome to all our opponents – players, staff, board members and supporters. Hove is always special on a T20 day or night and I thoroughly enjoyed my first season here last year and believe this year is going to be even better. We are thrilled to have Rashid Khan and Tom Bruce here as our overseas players and very much hope they enjoy their experience with us in Sussex. They are part of an experienced and exciting squad captained by Luke Wright and containing a number of players who have experienced the biggest tournaments around the world – Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Jofra Archer, David Wiese as well as Luke and Rashid. We also have Jason Gillespie who coached the Adelaide Strikers to the Big Bash title this year in Australia. Despite the talk of the new city-based competition starting in 2020, the T20 Blast remains and will remain critical to the future of counties such as Sussex. From 2020 onwards, the Blast will be played before the new competition with all of our best players available and some places available in the new competition for wildcard selection if players perform well in the Blast. Players will want to be selected in the new tournament, but I don’t see it as competition to the Sussex Sharks Blast programme. I see it as more of a representative selection a bit like international programmes. We will fight hard to protect our T20 team and brand and make sure our best players are available. Thank you for your support this season. A special mention to all our fans and hospitality visitors. Your support is much appreciated by us all and we hope you have a fantastic time. Also, an enormous ‘thank you’ to Boundless our T20 shirt sponsor, and Sea Life as sponsor of our brand-new family stand located by the indoor school. Enjoy the match! COME TOGETHER:
TEST CRICKET IN THE AGE OF T20
Despite their differences, the longest and shortest forms of the game – now, more than ever - are two sides of the same coin, argues Phil Hewitt.
A
rundel Castle Cricket Ground is a ground like no other. The castle itself is one of the longest inhabited in the country since being built in 1067 by William the Conqueror’s cousin Roger de Montgomery and the castle grounds have been home to a cricket pitch since 1895. During it’s time, Arundel has seen greats like Brian Lara, Shane Warne and Shahid Afridi grace its pitch, with the ground being home to many a warm-up game for touring international sides but it has a particularly good relationship with Sussex. Sussex have played a total of 28 County Championship matches, 21 List A matches and 7 Twenty20 matches in Arundel since their initial John Player’s League 40-over match against Gloucestershire on 30 July 1972. International stars that day included West Indian opener Gordon Greenidge, Ted Dexter and Tony Greig for Sussex and Pakistani batsman Zaheer Abbas, South African all-rounder Mike Procter and future international umpire David
Shepherd for Gloucestershire in a close affair which the visitors won by two wickets with just two balls to spare. Procter was the star of the contest, claiming 5-10 (figures which are still the ground’s best in List A cricket) and contributing 30 runs to a successful chase. Sussex’s next visit came three years later on 17 August 1975 for another John Player League fixture against Derbyshire which unfortunately was abandoned without a ball being bowled. After being robbed of a game that day, it was 15 years before Sussex returned to Arundel to play the first County Championship fixture there, a three-day game against Hampshire in July 1990. In that game, Sussex’s Colin Wells, uncle of current opener Luke, scored the maiden first-class century at Arundel, recording 107 in the Sussex first innings. It was a high-scoring match and, with the game being only three-days, neither team was
bowled out in any of the four innings. Three ended in declarations and the fourth simply ran out of time as the game reached its inevitable draw. Chris Smith, who had represented England and is the older brother of Robin, scored the game’s only other century – 132 not out – and the pick of the bowlers was spinner Shaun Udal who took six of Hampshire’s 14 total wickets and later played for England.
The second meeting in 2015 saw Durham win by 178 runs. Gordon Muchall starred with the bat for the visitors, making 81 not out in the first innings and following it up with 115 in the second. John Hastings, Paul Coughlin, Scott Borthwick and Mark Stoneman all passed 50 as well with Luke Wells emulating his uncle as Sussex’s lone centurion. Chris Rushworth took six first innings scalps for Durham with both Tim Linley and Magoffin each taking five wickets in an innings. The highest individual score by a batsman at Arundel is Murray Goodwin’s 235 in Sussex’s 2006 County Championship win by an innings and 25 runs over Yorkshire. Current Sussex head coach Jason Gillespie took four wickets for Yorkshire in that game. Sussex have won nine, lost ten and had two of their 21 List A fixtures at Arundel abandoned.
Sussex have returned to Arundel regularly since, playing a County Championship game there every year, apart from 1998. In that time, Sussex have won nine, drawn twelve and lost seven, meaning they have only lost 25% of their fixtures at Arundel. They have faced today’s opponents Durham twice in four-day fixtures here and both sides have won a game each, making this a tie breaker. In the first meeting in 2012, Sussex won by two wickets with Steve Magoffin starring for the hosts with the ball, taking 9-50 in the match. Current Sussex batting coach Michael Yardy top-scored in the game with 66.
On May 23 2010, Sussex faced the Unicorns in a Clydesdale Bank 40 match. The Unicorns chased down 325 with three balls to spare in what was the highest successful run chase in 40-over cricket at the time. Arundel has also hosted seven of Sussex’s T20 fixtures, with the first against Hampshire on 27 June 2006 which Sussex won by four wickets. Spinner Mushtaq Ahmed starred for the hosts that day, taking a match winning 4-30 in his four overs. Since that first fixture in 1975, Arundel has established itself as an excellent outground for Sussex, playing at least one game here each season since 1990. We hope this fixture against Durham will live up to some of the previous ones this historic ground has seen over the years.

CHRIS JORDAN:
REPAYING THE FAITH In these days of high salaries and sponsorship deals, a common complaint from sports fans is that their heroes have lost touch with their fan base. Happily, that will never happen to Chris Jordan. Here is a cricketer not only committed to bringing success to Sussex Sharks, but also one wishing to repay the club and the fans for the way they welcomed him to the fold, back in 2013.
T
he manner in which everyone at Sussex embraced and has supported him ever since has left a strong bond with the popular bowler. So much so, that if he were to become part of a trophy winning side in this season’s Vitality Blast, he would rank it up there with anything he may ever achieve in the game, including internationally with England or in the multi-million pound IPL. “Well, I realise that silverware has eluded me since I joined Sussex, and I’m really, really keen to put that right. The main reason is a personal one. Ultimately, Sussex gave me both the opportunity and that big stepping stone to go on to play international cricket and in the top T20 leagues around the world. One thing I will never, ever do is forget that first opportunity. That’s why it means so much more to me to potentially win something for this club. Winning something for Sussex would just be extra special.” So the way Jordan was welcomed to the club, clearly made a big mark on him. What was it that helped him settle in so much, does Sussex have some sort of family ethic that feels unique? “I think so, yes. For example, I’m often asked if there was one particular person that looked after me when I arrived, and the honest answer is no. I was truly welcomed by everyone. From Sam on the gate, to Colin in the Administration Office, to Joycey [Ed Joyce] as Captain and to Robbo [Mark Robinson] at the top, it’s a real family club and everyone helped me settle in. I always remember that personally, but it was important for cricketing reasons too. That solid base off the field meant that I was able to give my concentration to matters on the www.sussexcricket.co.uk
9
field. That whole environment around the club, the whole vibe it gave me, allowed me to settle in so quickly.” It appears that the same welcome has been afforded to Jordan’s fast bowling team mate, Jofra Archer. In fact, many people see the emergence of Jofra as similar to that of Jordan’s so what special advice does Jordan give to help get the best out of his talented team mate? “In terms of advice, I just try and keep him as humble as possible because I know that all of this can change overnight. Because he’s on a high now, I guess my role is to keep his feet on the ground, keep him remembering his basics, and reminding him to keep his standards up constantly in every single game that he plays. That’s really important whether it’s an IPL or Big Bash game in front of 80,000 people or whether it’s a Championship game in front of a much smaller crowd. I remind him constantly to keep his standards high because the style in which he plays his cricket means that people are coming to specifically watch him. He needs to keep that brand out there all of the time, and he’ll do that by keeping his standards. He’s a great team man, and I’m just glad to help him out in any way I can.” Does Jordan also see his experience now extend to getting involved in the leadership of the team, or is that something he’s always been comfortable in doing? “I would say I’ve always done that and it comes naturally with the role I have in the team. Obviously, I’m opening the bowling, I’m batting in the lower middle order and I’m fielding at slip, so you can always see what is happening with the pitch and with the ball. Leadership is something that I’ve always naturally done and I’ve always tried to give my opinion. Being at slip for example, I’m seeing things slightly differently than maybe if the captain is fielding at cover. I’m always trying to lend a hand and give my opinion and I don’t think that has changed too much over my career. Obviously, I’ve played international cricket and have played with lots of international stars now, so I have seen a lot of it and learned how it’s all done. Because of that, I know what it takes to make it to that level and, importantly, to sustain 10
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
that level too. The way I see it is that if any of the youngsters - or anyone really - wants to lean on me, I’m always there to lend a hand. I just want to help and I think that has just been natural in me from the start.” So, what can Sussex fans realistically expect from the team in this tournament? Will the team be setting any targets to help progress out of the group? “With anything, you have to set your targets and your goals. However, after you do set those goals, it’s very important to stay in the present and stay in the now. Obviously last year we just missed out on qualification by run rate, so from that point of view, that’s something we can look to improve on. Maybe we need to be looking at our strike rate and the number of runs we score. It’s important to go through processes but then let outcomes take care of themself. All we want to do is find a format that attracts and entertains
our supporters when they come to Hove. What we are all striving to do is play an attractive brand of cricket that is pleasing to our supporters. We want to continue to entertain them because ultimately that’s what it’s all about - us enjoying our cricket out in the field, and the Sharks supporters enjoying their evening out watching us play some really good cricket. If we do that, the outcomes will take care of themselves.” A big part of any successful outcome could come from the combination of Jordan, Archer, Tymal Mills and of course new signing, Rashid Khan. Bowling with them in front of a packed crowd at The 1st Central County Ground on a T20 night is going to be a special place to be? “Definitely. To be honest, there’s not many better atmospheres than a Friday night match at Hove. It’s a packed house, everyone very tight and very close, meaning that you can really feel the vibe of the crowd. It’s a special experience.
When you are right next to them, out on the boundary, you really just want to please them. At the end of the day, they’ve taken their time out to come and watch us play cricket, and put their hand in their pocket to buy a ticket - we are aware of that. As a player, because of that, you just want to entertain them and you want to do well for them. Even though Hove is not a Test ground, when it is packed it still gives a brilliant vibe and it really is right up there with any atmosphere around the country at any ground we play in.” Let’s hope that there are many packed nights at Hove this season to finally see Chris deliver on his dream of picking up some silverware for Sussex. It’s no more than he deserves. by Dave Brayley

BOWMAN’S AWAY DAYS:
SURREY
There is always a heightened sense of excitement when Surrey are in town especially under the Hove floodlights. I would like to add a huge welcome to Surrey fans who have made the short journey to be with us this evening.
A
s for Sussex Sharks this match represents the first opportunity for the team to showcase their T20 Blast credentials before a home crowd. Jason and his team have already been on a Blast journey taking in Chelmsford, Cardiff and Southampton over the past few days. Talking of away trips, in this series of Blast programme notes I will be looking to bring you some experiences of away days at our visitors purely from a fan’s view point. Hopefully it will bring back some memories and perhaps encourage more Sharks fans to get on the road. Tonight, we take in the Oval…
Aaron Finch too hot to Handle! In last season’s Blast, Sussex travelled to the Oval on 14th August 2017 for a must-win game for both teams. It was a very special day for yours truly as Mrs Bowman agreed to join me on the adventure. Watching any kind of sport is a bit like pulling teeth for my good lady so for her to join me was very much appreciated. In a subtle way I really tried to make the day more special other than just watching the cricket. Under wall-to-wall sunshine and having enjoyed a glass or two of fizz, I think she enjoyed the experience. It was a Sunday, so we made the decision to travel up by train from Burgess Hill station. That’s not a long journey to be honest and after
chatting the whole way it seemed a very short space of time before we hit Victoria and then the underground to Oval tube station. In keeping with the ‘non-cricket’ vibe we walked away from the stadium and found a wonderful little independent coffee shop, where we shared a brunch sitting outside. We then made our way back where I showed her the iconic gasometer which towers over the north east side. Then through the turnstiles and into our seats. As pyrotechnics shot into the blue-sky Sussex were led out to field in perfect cricket conditions. Indeed, it was a red hot day and Mrs B was quite pleased that our seats had the benefit of shade for the entire game. To be honest, Aaron Finch singlehandedly put the game to bed very quickly. His rapid ton paved the way for a host’s victory. It was a dagger through my heart, but I noticed Mrs B. clapping when he dispatched our attack for four sixes on the trot. Well the Vitality T20 Blast is all about excitement, adrenaline and big hitting. We got our money’s worth of that, I suppose. During the break I treated us both to a glass of fizz and a hot dog. A Chris Nash 50 put the Sharks in contention and with nice contributions from elsewhere it looked as though a 193 run chase might be on. However, it wasn’t to be as we fell 17 runs short. We repeated to journey back to Mid Sussex reflecting on a lovely day out! Enjoy the match, Colin (Sharks super-fan)

DELRAY RAWLINS: GLOBETROTTER
“I
Bermudan born all-rounder Delray Rawlins made his senior debut for the island of his birth aged just 15 but went on to represent England’s under-19’s after moving to England at 14 to go to school.
14

went to St. Bede’s in Eastbourne,” says Rawlins, and Rawlins credits his teammate’s father Alan as one of his most influential coaches, saying “I had Alan Wells as my coach at school and he was really helpful and good to me. I learnt a lot from my two years with him.” However, moving to a new country is always difficult and especially at such a young age and it was something Rawlins had to battle. “I struggled with homesickness for a while. When I first moved over, I was actually close to going back but I managed to get through it,” he said, “I was living with my sister for a bit when she went to university which helped me, but I was definitely struggling when I first moved over. Now, obviously, I want to spend more time over here than I do back home.” Now at Sussex, Rawlins has enjoyed having two fellow Caribbean cricketers around in Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan, saying “I get on with both of them really well. It is definitely helpful having someone that knows the same culture I used to live in and it’s very nice to have them around.” Not only highly-rated at Sussex, the 20-yearold has already had some exciting opportunities afforded to him by the ECB, most recently representing the South in the curtain-raising North v South 50-over series in Barbados. “It was nice to go back home and play,” said Rawlins, “I’ve played in Barbados a few times and it’s one of my favourite spots for holidays. I enjoyed being back in conditions that I am quite familiar with. It is a really nice series to be a part of, there are some very good players there and it was a great experience to be around those players and in that kind of set up.” In that series, the South was coached by ex-England head coach Andy Flower and current England batting coach Mark Ramprakash, two coaches that Rawlins has worked with before. “I’ve worked with them at England Under-19s camps and Ramps actually went on our Under19s India tour as the batting coach. It was nice
Sussex currently have a lot of good young players coming through the academy and Rawlins finds it “exciting” to be a part of that group.
to catch up with them again and go over some things I had done with them before and to learn some new things off them.” In terms of performance, Rawlins hit a powerful 53 in the first game and believes it was an important innings in his career so far, saying “Knowing that I can perform at what was effectively a county level was pleasing and I am now trying to kick on and do that more consistently. Doing it for Sussex is the main aim now.” Rawlins also spent the winter playing grade cricket in Sydney, another “enjoyable” experience for him. “Working with Stuart MacGill over there was quite nice because he had a lot of success with Mason [Crane] and I knew that I was in good hands. It worked out for me as I came back bowling pretty well and some of the stuff that I learned with him I am using today.” Sussex currently have a lot of good young players coming through the academy and Rawlins finds it “exciting” to be a part of that group.
“Winning the Second XI T20 competition last year was exciting and the majority, if not all, of those boys are playing in the first team at the moment. Hopefully we can keep growing as a group and bring some silverware back to Sussex.” There is also a wealth of international experience for Rawlins to learn from with players like Luke Wright, David Wiese and Jordan at the club, something he looks to take advantage of. “It’s great listening to those senior players when they talk about the game in team meetings or you can just discuss general tactics with them and pick their brains. It’s nice to have those heads around the dressing room and their experience out on the field as well when you’re in a battle.” Also, with Rashid Khan joining Sussex for the T20 Blast, as a fellow spinner Rawlins is looking forward to training and playing with one of the world’s best. “I will definitely be having a watch when he is bowling or trying to get down the other end and face him as well.” by Matthew Cooper

MICHAEL BURGESS: ‘I CAN’T WAIT TO KEEP TO SOME OF
THE BEST BOWLERS IN THE WORLD’ Michael Burgess believes head coach Jason Gillespie’s relaxed nature will help bring the best out of the Sussex squad in this year’s Vitality Blast.
S
ussex are right in the mix for promotion from County Championship Division Two and Burgess is just one of the county’s young players who have made a strong start to the season. Heading into the T20 Blast, wicketkeeper/ batsman Burgess had scored 404 runs at an average of 50.50 from six Championship games and with a strike-rate of 72.40. The 23-year-old feels the enjoyable atmosphere Gillespie has created will stand the squad in good stead for the T20 Blast. Burgess, who had played just one T20 game for Leicestershire in 2016 prior to this year, said: “Dizzy has been brilliant, he’s very relaxed and a very chilled out character. He makes everyone feel very calm in the dressing room.
19
“He doesn’t put any added pressure on anyone to perform. He knows there’s enough pressure on the game anyway and he understands that. He just lets you go out and play the way you want to play cricket. “He’s created a really calm and enjoyable atmosphere and everyone is playing cricket with a massive enjoyment factor this year which is really exciting and that’s a big part of why we’ve performed so well so far. “There’s enough pressure in games of cricket anyway as teams want to win and people want to win and individually do well. “To have a coach that takes the pressure off you by being very relaxed, smiley and cheerful most of the time makes you just think it’s not the be-all and end-all. “Most people take that as a positive and just enjoy cricket more. You view it as the game which you played as a kid rather than a job and he’s been really good for us.” Burgess admits confidence in the Sussex squad is high for the T20 Blast, with Afghan international Rashid Khan - the number one ranked Twenty20 bowler in the world - joining the likes of Luke Wright, Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Tom Bruce and Tymal Mills in the side. Talking about his first main year playing in the T20 Blast, Burgess said: “It’s always exciting to start a new campaign, whether it’s four-day, one-day or T20. 20
www.sussexcricket.co.uk
“But I’m more excited by the fact it’s going to be a great experience to be playing in a team that I think is really strong and competitive. Hopefully we can go a long way in the competition. “Confidence is high but not too high. T20 is a very difficult competition to win. Lots of teams go all out for T20, it’s the big competition of the year and a lot of teams target it to try to win. “We know it’s not going to be an easy ride but if we play well and play our best cricket, there’s no reason why we can’t get out of the group stage and knock-out cricket is then knock-out cricket. “Anyone can win any game but if we play well I think we’ve got a good chance. “And as a keeper, I’ll be keeping to some of the best bowlers going around at the minute which is exciting and hopefully I can contribute with the bat as well.” One of the bowlers Burgess will be standing behind the stumps to is Khan, who was named in Cricinfo’s all-time Twenty20 XI earlier this year. Burgess said: “It will be a great experience. Come the end of the few weeks he’s with us, we’ll all be better players having played with him. “It’s always a great thing to have someone that is going to come in and make you better. Hopefully we can all get a little bit better at playing leg-spin and if he can win us a few games that would be great because we all know how good he is. “We’re all looking forward to seeing how well he does over here and I’m sure he’ll do brilliantly.”
SUSSEX CRICKET FOUNDATION: WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ALDRIDGE FOUNDATION Thanks to the generosity of the Aldridge Foundation, the Sussex Cricket Foundation is in its second year of delivering a dedicated girls cricket project in the Brighton and Portslade area. The goal of this project is firstly to inspire a passion for cricket in the local community but also to continue the excellent work that Sussex already does in ensuring that girls cricket in Sussex is thriving.
T
o inspire a passion for cricket, it is important to provide opportunities for everyone to get involved and remove any barriers that prevent participation. The introduction of community-based girls cricket hubs has meant that more girls can attend cricket in their own environment. Over the last 12 months the Sussex Cricket Foundation has delivered five girls-only cricket hubs in Brighton, Portslade, Burgess Hill, Worthing and in Lewes. In total 140 girls have attended these free hubs with success stories now starting to follow including girls attending these hubs transferring into other community cricket programmes such as the MCCF Hub (run from the Sir Rod Aldridge Cricket Centre) and into local cricket clubs. The benefit of running these free cricket hubs for girls is now starting to bear fruit and this is due to the Aldridge Foundation in funding this work. Also made possible from the Aldridge Foundation funding is our continued girls-only cricket coaching in local primary schools. By delivering a girls-only cricket programme it has given girls a taster of the opportunities open to them at both the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy and the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy as well opening doors to get involved with cricket outside of the school playground. The Sussex Cricket Foundation has delivered over 200 hours of free coaching in over 15 local primary schools to showcase women and girls cricket in Sussex and the growing opportunities available to participate. But that is not all that the Aldridge Foundation helps the Sussex Cricket Foundation to be
involved with. We are able to deliver weekly school sessions at both Brighton Aldridge Community Academy and Portslade Aldridge Community Academy. Both schools receive around 35 hours each of dedicated girls only cricket coaching from the SCF Women & Girls Development Officer Charlotte Burton. There have also been holiday camps running from the Sir Rod Aldridge Cricket Centre in school down-time. In total almost 100 girls have attended these. Charlotte Burton, Women & Girls Development Officer for the Sussex Cricket Foundation said: “Thanks to the support from the Aldridge Foundation we have been able to deliver a significant number of free and dedicated girls only cricket sessions. 98% of the attendees at our hubs have migrated into either schools’ cricket or recreational cricket clubs which is something that we should be proud of. Without the help and support of the Aldridge Foundation these girls would have had very little exposure to cricket and also limited opportunity and confidence to take up the sport and get active”. by Steve Bailey

STRONGER TOGETHER 1ST CENTRAL is the proud ground sponsor of Sussex Cricket and partner of the Sussex Cricket Foundation. With offices based in the heart of Sussex we are avid followers of the team and were delighted when the opportunity arose to be part of their journey. We were attracted by the club’s ethos and long-standing history, as well as their strong community spirit that revolves around inspiring a passion for cricket. Their commitment to nurturing young people who display great talent and the drive to succeed in following their dreams resonates entirely with our own values which is why our partnership works so well. With Jason Gillespie at the helm and what many are calling the best bowling line-up in cricket, we’re sure 2018 is going to be a great success. We look forward to a fantastic year of cricket at The 1ST CENTRAL County Ground and we wish Sussex the best of luck.
