IN FRONT OF OUR FANS THE BOYS LOVE PLAYING HERE
Having firmly cemented his place as the senior spinner in the Sussex red-ball side, this season Jack Carson made his T20 debut for the Sharks in the opening win against Gloucestershire at The 1st Central County Ground. He sat down to talk to us about that special night, his huge six in the final over and life under new skipper, Tymal Mills.
J ack Carson, your thoughts on how the Blast campaign has gone so far?
It’s been a good start obviously, 3 wins out of 4. You’d have taken that, being top of the table is exciting, but we are still disappointed by the loss at Glamorgan. But we’ve set a good platform to go and get a quarter-final place.
It’s your debut Blast season, on a personal note how do you think it has gone?
I think I guess my role in the team is to have those big moments, it might not be massive in terms of numbers, but hopefully to have moments that can help change the momentum of the game and force the games to go our way.
What are some of the challenges for an off spinner in the Blast compared to the red-ball format of the game?
It’s obviously really different, you know it can be difficult bowling to the right-handers spinning in. But I like the challenge, I watch lots of cricket when I’m not playing to help me work out different ways of getting batters out. It’s tough but I enjoy it.
Gloucestershire, first game of the season, what a way to win the game – that final over was so tense, what was it like when you hit that MASSIVE six over the pavilion?
I was just trying to get a set base and a strong swing for that six and it paid off! I watched the first innings and then watching us bat I kind of knew the pockets where I wanted to score my runs
and hit the ball. I guess I kind of got the right delivery for that six and thankfully it paid off!
The atmosphere and celebrations were crazy, Hove hasn’t been that loud in a long, long time, obviously the manner of the victory helped but it feels like a more optimistic place now? The staff, the players, the fans, it feels like a good moment for the Club?
Yeah it was pretty cool being out there at the end of the game for it, it was definitely the best atmosphere I have played under in my time at Hove. It’s amazing to play white-ball cricket here, we definitely felt the fans support behind us and the players love playing here under the lights on Blast nights.
Finally, skipper Tymal Mills is once again leading from the front with the ball, but what is life like under Tymal as captain? He seems to be getting a great tune out of the squad so far.
Yeah he is a class act. He knows so much about T20 cricket, he’s captaining the whole team in terms of bowling changes, he is so knowledgeable. He is also really good with the boys at training, he is so approachable and great for bouncing ideas off of.
