NATWEST NATWEST T20T20 BLAST BLAST SUMMER SUMMER PROGRAMME PROGRAMME 20172017
FROM THE CHAIRMAN A warm welcome to Sussex Cricket for the 2017 edition of the NatWest T20 Blast. As someone who has been involved in cricket in the county for over 30 years, before becoming chairman of Sussex Cricket earlier this year, I can appreciate the impact that T20 has had on the game, both at professional level and in the game’s grassroots as well, since its inception in 2003. As a format that introduces people of all ages to the great game we all love, it’s hard to beat. These days there are a lot of other things competing with cricket for people’s time and attention. A game of T20, whether it’s played here by the best players in the country, at your local club or on the village green, only takes around three
hours, but that is still long enough to be competitive and give people new to the game – whether they are playing or watching – a taste of what our sport has to offer. Ross Taylor is our new captain and he is leading a team packed full of big-game players capable of changing the fortunes of a match in an instant. T20 can be decided in a blink of an eye – one over can often make all the difference – and I’m confident Ross and the players, supported by our excellent cricket management team, can give us a team to be proud of this year. Enjoy the cricket and your visit with us and be sure to make plenty of noise for the Sharks.
Good old Sussex by the Sea!
BOB WARREN
WELCOME TO T20
WELCOME
FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
A WARM WELCOME TO THE 2017 NATWEST T20 BLAST AND THANKS FOR COMING OUT TO SUPPORT THE SUSSEX SHARKS! Since T20 cricket started back in 2003 the tournament has constantly evolved and I believe we now have a fantastic product which appeals to a wide range of people, whether they are serious cricket fans or not. A change for this year is that the fixtures are being played in a block rather than spread out during the summer. For the first time the majority of games will be played during the school holidays which hopefully means more youngsters – the cricket fans of the future – can come to the 1st Central County Ground for our floodlit midweek matches
and enjoy getting behind the Sharks. The players prefer it as well because it means they can concentrate on the specific skills that are tested in the T20 environment, where the course of a match can change in the space of a few deliveries, over the next few weeks. We’re delighted that Ross Taylor, a player with considerable captaincy experience with New Zealand, will be leading the Sharks during this year’s Blast. Ross believes that we have a squad capable of beating any other team and he’s aiming for the knockout stages as a minimum target. Everyone who was at Edgbaston back in 2009 will never forget that day when Sussex became T20 champions for the first time. We’d love to go back but it needs everyone involved to get behind Ross and the team during the next
few weeks. Let’s make The 1st Central County Ground our fortress!
Enjoy the Blast and please let us know what you think about your experience, especially if it’s your first visit. I’d love to get your feedback.
Best Wishes, ROB ANDREW

TYMAL THE T20 GLOBETROTTER It is not so long ago that county cricketers would fill their winters with odd jobs to earn a few quid before they could rejoin their team-mates at the start of April.
6
NATWEST T20 BLAST SUMMER PROGRAMME 2017
How times have changed. Sharks paceman Tymal Mills spent most of last winter on the road – or in the air to be precise – while making his name, and more than a few quid, as a globetrotting T20 specialist. He had had a memorable summer in 2016. Last June, here at The 1st Central County Ground, he famously blasted out Somerset’s Chris Gayle, live on Sky Sports, with a yorker clocked at 93.3mph before making his England debut against Sri Lanka at the Ageas Bowl a month later. From November until early March, Mills, who turns 25 in August, was away from home playing in four different T20 leagues and for
England in India. He then went back to India in April to compete in the money-spinning Indian Premier League. First of all he turned out for Chittagong Vikings in the Bangladesh Premier League and then Auckland Aces in New Zealand’s Super Smash. After Christmas he got a late call-up to the Brisbane Heat in Australia’s Big Bash before heading off to Dubai for the Pakistan Super League, where he represented Quetta Gladiators and finally Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. In amongst all that he played three T20 internationals for England in
India, a series that was handily scheduled just before the IPL auction. He impressed in national colours in a 2-1 series defeat, nervelessly taking the new ball, he mixed serious pace with his cunning back-of-thehand slower balls. “It was amazing,” beams Mills, as he reflects on a winter that effectively changed his life. “I spent my first Christmas away from home which was a bit strange, although Christmas isn’t a huge thing in my family. “I was in New Zealand for Christmas and New Year and shared an apartment with the media guy from

the Auckland Aces. He’s a young guy and got me involved with his mates and his family. They bought me presents for Christmas which was really nice. “I had a great time in New Zealand – loved it. It’s one of the smaller competitions and is a bit under the radar but I had an awesome time and I was really pleased with how I did. Then to get a taste of the Big Bash was quality.” The Brisbane Heat call-up was unexpected so it meant that he had to fly straight from there to Kolkata where he joined up with England’s white-ball squad – but without a visa or any of his England kit!
“I had to go to the visa office in Brisbane.” he explains “and they had to send my passport to Canberra and then get it back in time for my flight to Kolkata. My mum had to courier all my England kit from home in Norwich to Lord’s for the team psychologist, who was coming out for the T20s, to bring with him. Luckily it all worked out fine.” It was while in Dubai at the PSL that Mills watched with baited breath as the IPL auction took place out in India. He recalls: “I spoke to my agent Tom Harwood the night before and we knew there was a good amount of interest – being available for the
whole tournament helped. “It was 8.30am in Dubai and my best mate from home got up at 3am and we FaceTime’d each other so we watched it together. It was crazy. “Stokesy went before me and the amounts of money were in lakhs and crore of rupees so I had to look on Twitter to see how much that was in pounds – £1.8m, wow! “When I came up, the bidding was a bit slow to start with and I got a bit panicky. But then it started and didn’t stop! “When the hammer came down I didn’t know how much it was. My phone started blowing up. I didn’t really know what to do.

I was in shock to be honest. I went for breakfast with Luke Wright and Wrighty insisted I paid for it!” Mills was picked up by Virat Kohil’s RCB for the princely sum of £1.4m. Even though injury prevented him earning his full potential, the IPL cash has still allowed him to get on the property ladder for the first time. At the IPL, he found himself in the same squad as Kohli’s, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle – “they’re
treated like gods and rightly so” – and playing in front of 65,000 at Kolkata’s famous Eden Gardens colosseum. “That was pretty special.” he says. The left-armer missed out on England’s recent three-match T20 series against South Africa after failing to recover from an injury picked up at the IPL. But with the NatWest T20 Blast returning to a high-summer
scheduling block, he is raring to go again. “It [the scheduling change] has worked out nicely for me because it gave me some time off after IPL to get fit again.” he says. “I recently signed a contract extension with Sussex which takes me to the end of 2019 when I’ll be 27 and hopefully able to play in the new T20 competition.”
But that is in the future. For now, tearaway Tymal just wants to charge down the hill at Hove and send a few more batsmen like Chris Gayle back to the hutch.

CAPTAIN’S STORY
CAPTAIN’S STORY IT’S A GREAT PLEASURE, ON BEHALF OF THE SQUAD AND TEAM MANAGEMENT, TO WELCOME YOU TO THIS SEASON’S NATWEST T20 BLAST.
It’s an honour to for me to be captaining the side. When I was asked to take over I had no hesitation. I have got plenty of experience of leading a team in this format but the most important thing is that I already know a lot about the club, the players and the county from my time here last season. I had an absolute blast, if you excuse the pun, and the family and I really loved exploring Sussex and the diversity of the county – from
the seaside just a six-hit away from The 1st Central County Ground to the English countryside a bit further inland. It reminded me a bit of New Zealand to be honest, and the comparisons with back home didn’t end there. Conditions on the pitch are pretty similar too so I didn’t have to adapt my own game too much. In the Blast, in particular, I felt I made a solid contribution with over 400 runs but it was very frustrating for all of us that we missed out in a couple of tight games and ended up failing to reach the knockout stages. Hopefully we can atone for that this year. I certainly believe the squad
is good enough. If you look at the personnel we tick a lot of boxes – real wheels with the ball up front in Tymal Mills, Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan, experienced spin bowlers Danny Briggs and Will Beer and real depth in our batting too. Our two South Africans, David Wiese and Stiaan van Zyl, have both played T20s for their country so I feel we have a really good blend with plenty of strength in depth. We need to be mentally strong to win those big moments that can decide games and stay focused, but we’ve been practising hard under lights in the last few weeks and the way the tournament is organised
will help us too with no distraction of having to prepare for other formats. All the teams in the South Group look ridiculously strong so we’re all set for what I hope will be a fantastic few weeks for the Sharks. Needless to say, we need your backing, whether it’s at The 1st Central County Ground or at Arundel Castle, where we get started against Glamorgan on July 9 as part of the Rathbones Arundel Festival of Cricket.
I hope you have a Blast!

CLUB AND COUNTRY CHRIS JORDAN’S VAST T20 EXPERIENCE MAKES HIM A KEY MEMBER OF THE SHARKS’ SQUAD Continues on page 16 NATWEST T20 BLAST SUMMER PROGRAMME 2017
15
Chris Jordan laughs when it is suggested to him that his recent experience in the Indian Premier League wasn’t too strenuous.
16
NATWEST T20 BLAST SUMMER PROGRAMME 2017
“You could say that” he smiles. “I bowled one over and faced two balls in six weeks which was disappointing. I wanted to play in every game – I’m ambitious and thrive on the competition but there were a lot of good players who missed out.” Jordan’s team, Sunrisers Hyderabad, reached the semi-finals when he made his only appearance against Kolkata Knight Riders. Coming in at No.7, he was caught and bowled off his second ball by the Australian quick Nathan Coulter-Nile and although he removed opener Robin Uthappa, it was his only over in the game as Knight Riders chased a revised target of 48 in six overs. Jordan wasn’t the only big name who spent much of the tournament kicking his heels. “Kane Williamson didn’t play in every game for my team then he went to the Champions Trophy last month and got a hundred in his first match against Australia.” he said. “So, it was disappointing but it reflects the very high standard of the competition.” The 28-year-old did make the most of his experience, even if actual match time was limited. “In any situation, I try to learn and keep evolving.” he added. “On the sidelines, I was sitting and having conversations about the game with the other guys. You listen to different ideas about the game but you also pick up ways of implementing different things into your own game which will help you move forward. “And I trained hard. I think the fitness work I was able to do showed when I came back and in my first
Championship game back for Sussex against Worcestershire I bowled ten overs on the trot and still felt fine afterwards. So, it wasn’t a waste of time at all. “It’s a brilliant experience. You end up making friends for life and you can improve your own game in a very short space of time. You look at Ben Stokes, his whole aura is different now after a very successful IPL with bat and ball. Success and performing well breeds confidence.” Jordan is one of several Sharks with top-level T20 experience, whether it’s in the international arena – both he and Tymal Mills have represented England in the past 12 months in the format – or the likes of skipper Ross Taylor and his predecessor Luke Wright, who will return to Australia’s Big Bash this winter with Melbourne Stars, where he has been such a big success. Their know-how, especially in tight games, could be vital in what is likely to be another competitive South Group. But while the Sharks can boast plenty of top-level T20 experience, Jordan is convinced a player who has only bowled four overs in the format might end up making as big an impact. His fellow Barbadian Jofra Archer hasn’t looked back since making his Championship debut a year ago. He was Sussex’s leading wicket-taker going into this season’s Blast and Jordan, who has become something of a mentor for the 22-year-old, is expecting Archer to keep on improving, whether it’s with a red, a white or indeed a pink ball in hand.
CHRIS JORDAN
“He’s done brilliantly,” said Jordan. “You can’t fault his attitude. At times, it’s hard for the captain to get the ball out of his hand. He wants to keep bowling, running in and trying to take wickets.
Ball control: CJ shows off his skills with a football during an England practice session
“I said it a year ago when he first came into the side – the sky is the limit for Jofra. The good thing is he’s kept his feet on the ground. He’s not getting too far ahead of himself and if he keeps doing that he will keep moving forward in his career.”
In full flight: The fitness work he did during the IPL paid off when Chris returned to The Specsavers County Championship action with Sussex in May

It might be too early to place Jofra Archer alongside Michael Holding, who was known as the Rolls-Royce of fast bowlers, but he has claims to be at least a Baby Bentley.
While fellow Barbadian Malcolm Marshall has strong claims to be the greatest fast bowler of them all, Archer points to Holding and Curtly Ambrose as the quick men he particularly admires. “I would love to meet Michael Holding,” Archer says. “People say I have a similar, relaxed run-up to the crease, which is very flattering. I admire Michael very much.” Until that time comes, however, Archer, who at 22 is one of the most exciting young cricketers in the country, is not short of mentors. “Jon Lewis [Assistant Head Coach at Sussex] has helped me in all areas of my bowling. “And, while he was here, Vernon Philander passed on some tips. In particular, he helped me with my
outswinger. Then there is Chris Jordan. He helps me with my cricket, but with other things too. He gives me good advice on and off the field, tells me how to prepare my body in the gym and also picks me up if he sees that things are going badly and I need some encouragement.” But Jordan, who played a big part in bringing Archer to Sussex, has not had to give Archer much encouragement this season. In the first six Championship matches of the year Archer took 35 wickets – second only to Kent’s Darren Stevens in the second division – at 23.03, topped by 11 wickets in the match in the victory at Leicester in June; the next most successful Sussex bowler in the averages was
Jordan, with 10. He was also, at that stage, the fourth highest run-scorer in the side, with 251 runs, at 35.86. Little wonder that great things are expected of him. Lewis says: “I think there is a lot more to come from him, pacewise. He has spent time this winter working hard on his body and now we are exploring his run-up and how fast he can actually bowl. “He already bowls at 85mph and he’s got a very easy, very high, relaxed action – his pace comes from nowhere. He gets a really good kick out of the pitch and he moves the ball both ways. He’s a very, very skillful bowler for a man of his age. He wants to play international cricket - that’s why he’s here - and I
“HE’S A VERY, VERY SKILLFUL BOWLER FOR A MAN OF HIS AGE. HE WANTS TO PLAY INTERNATIONAL CRICKET - THAT’S WHY HE’S HERE AND I FIRMLY BELIEVE THE POTENTIAL IS THERE TO DO THAT.” JON LEWIS, ASSISTANT HEAD COACH

firmly believe the potential is there to do that.” The 6’ 3” Archer, who is described by Sussex Head Coach, Mark Davis, as “an incredibly exciting talent,” has not said whether he would prefer to play for England or the West Indies. “I just want to play international cricket,” he says. He has already represented the West Indies at Under-19 level. That was in 2013, before a serious back injury set him back. He came to Sussex in 2014, when he played for the second team and also appeared in club cricket. “I’m a late bloomer,” he says, which is hardly the case. “All the practice is finally paying off. The win over Leicestershire was particularly pleasing for me [he took
five wickets in the first innings and six in the second]. Normally, if I bowl well in the first innings I’m not so strong in the second, and vice versa. “I think I have a good seam presentation,” he adds. “That means I can both swing and seam the ball, according to the conditions. Since the back injury I haven’t really charged in, but I would like to do that again one day.” He played just six County Championship matches last season, but took 23 wickets and finished third in the county’s averages. This year he not only been a regular fixture but has also been the team’s star player. In the first match of the season, in which Sussex were defeated by Kent, he produced
career best figures of seven for 67, and his form has not dipped since. Lewis says: “He can catch well in the slips and he can bat too. He’s very orthodox for a Caribbean batter and I can see him batting as high as seven, maybe even six. Not this year, but over time.” He scored 73, batting at No 8, on his Championship debut against Essex at Colchester last season but this year, not only has he been a regular in a team brimming with all-rounders, has been unlucky to bat at No.10. He regards himself as an “even” all-rounder. He says he enjoys living in a county which – like his native Barbados – has a Worthing, Hastings and a Black Rock. He lives in the village of Hurstpierpoint and says: “I feel
very contented because I have been here for years now and know my way around.
“I’m also very pleased to be playing for a club where everyone seems to help each other. Everyone has taken such good care of me. It’s a lovely club.”

SCF CHARITY SONG
“THE BOWLER”
Original lyrics by Don Schlitz - words adapted by Colin Bowley On a warm summer’s eve On a train bound for Sussex I met up with the Sharks We were all too tired to sleep So we took turns a-starin’ Out the window at the darkness Excitement overtook us, And we began to speak We said, “Sharks, we’ve made a life Out of readin’ people’s faces Knowin’ what their thoughts were By the way they held their eyes So if you don’t mind us sayin’ The Sharks are out to get you We’re 11 strong as we sing this song Down Sussex, by the sea CHORUS Every player knows That the secret to survivin’ Is knowin’ when to make that call The one that’s right for me ‘Cause every ball’s a winner And every ball could be a loser And the best that you can hope for is be the best that you can be
CHORUS You’ve got to know when to bowl ‘em Know when to hold ‘em... Know when to walk away... And know when to run You can count on Sussex Sharks, When you’re out there in the middle. There’ll be time enough for having fun... When the evening’s done

The women’s World Cup will reach its climax as this season’s NatWest T20 Blast gets underway, but the summer is far from over for the best players on the planet. The second edition of the Kia Super League starts on August 10th and the tournament culminates on Friday, September 1st when Finals Day will be televised by Sky Sports here at The 1st Central County Ground. Children from a school in Portslade joined players representing the six teams on
Brighton beach to launch the competition earlier this summer including England off-spinner Danni Wyatt, from the Southern Vipers. She said: “It’s a massive summer, probably the biggest we’ve ever had with the World Cup and then the Super League straight afterwards. But we know it’s a great chance to really increase the awareness of women’s cricket and that is a huge thing for us.” Wyatt has joined the reigning champions after playing for Lancashire Thunder in 2016, when the competition took place for the first time, and the Vipers start the tournament against Western Storm in a repeat of last year’s final.
KIA SUPER LEAGUE
The Kia Super League comes to Sussex on Saturday, August 26th when the Southern Vipers take on Yorkshire Diamonds at Arundel Castle. “It will soon come around and I’m looking forward to it,” she added. “The standard of the competition last year was good and with a lot of the top players staying on after the World Cup it will be even stronger this year. “A lot of the games were really close and it has definitely helped bridge the gap between county cricket and playing for England and that can only be a good thing in the long term.”
Tickets for the Kia Super League game at Arundel can be purchased online at www.ecb.co.uk

GUIDE TO NATWEST T20 BLAST
1ST TIMER'S GUIDE TO NATWEST T20 BLAST THE BAT
THE BALL
HOW TO SCORE RUNS
BOWLING AND OVERS
Two batsmen play together to score as many runs as possible.
FOUR
If the ball rolls over the rope at the edge of the pitch, it scores 4 runs.
In the middle of the pitch there are two sets of stumps. Batsmen can score runs by hitting the ball and running between these stumps or by hitting the ball to the boundary rope at the edge of the pitch.
The bowler bowls six times at a batsmen - which is called an over. Extra balls can be bowled in the over if the bowler bowls a bad ball. Each team can bowl up to 20 overs in a match - which is why it’s called T20 Cricket.
SIX
If the ball goes over the rope without touching the ground first, it scores 6 runs.
Most no balls result in a free hit. The batting team will get 2 runs added to their total and a free hit, where the only way the batsman can get out is being run out.

WRIGHT UP THERE SUSSEX HAVE HAD SOME BRILLIANT T20 PLAYERS OVER THE YEARS, BUT HAS THERE BEEN ANYONE AS CONSISTENT AS LUKE WRIGHT? BY BRUCE TALBOT Sussex supporters have had the pleasure of watching some of the world’s greatest exponents of T20 cricket over the years.
38
NATWEST T20 BLAST SUMMER PROGRAMME 2017
The exploits of Brendon McCullum, Mahela Jayawardene, Matt Prior, Dwayne Smith, Murray Goodwin and Yasir Arafat at Hove are remembered fondly by those who follow the Sharks. This summer another global superstar will be leading Sussex’s pursuit of a second T20 title in the form of New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor, while Tymal Mills spearheads the bowling attack following his lucrative spell in the Indian Premier League, where he was signed for an eye-popping £1.4million by Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, Sussex’s hopes of making it through the notoriously demanding South Group and qualify for the knockout stages, could hinge on a
player who can rightly claim to be one of the most successful batsmen since the birth of T20 cricket in 2003. Statistics rarely lie and Luke Wright is right up there with the very best when it comes to the shortest format of the game. The former England international has amassed 6,295 runs in T20 cricket since making his debut as a fresh-faced 19-year-old against Surrey at Hove in July 2004. To put that into context, only ten players have ever scored more runs and none of them are from England. Owais Shah has the next highest tally of batsmen from these shores with 5,509, while Kevin Pietersen is lagging well behind on 5,258.
Wright’s record is even more impressive on closer inspection. The 32-year-old’s strike rate of 144.77 is only bettered by West Indies masterblasters Kieran Pollard and Chris Gayle of players with more than 5,000 runs to their name. He is a proven match-winner too with his six centuries putting him joint third on the list behind Gayle and McCullum. Of those hundreds, the sensational unbeaten 153 from just 66 balls against Essex at Chelmsford in 2014 will stick out most in memories of Sussex supporters, although his 44-ball century for Melbourne Stars against Hobart in 2012 – then a Big Bash record - was arguably as impressive.
WRIGHT UP THERE
A familiar sight for Sussex fans down the years as Luke Wright finds the boundary
Wright’s ability to bludgeon runs at a ferocious rate has allowed him to ply his trade in the biggest competitions around the world in England, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand and Pakistan. It also won him 51 caps for England who he helped win the World T20 along with Sussex’s current batting coach Mike Yardy in the Caribbean in 2010. Considering his reputation as one of the finest ball-strikers in the game it is slightly surprising that he has become surplus to requirements on the international stage since March 2014. England’s loss is definitely Sussex’s gain, however, with the Sharks
hoping he can rediscover his sensational form of 2015, when he smashed 564 runs at an average of 51.27 to help seal a place in the quarter-finals where they were beaten by a David Willey-inspired Northamptonshire at Hove. Injury problems meant Wright’s powers were noticeably diminished last summer as he managed a relatively disappointing tally of 247 runs with his dip in form a big factor in Sussex’s failure to qualify for the knockout stages, despite an encouraging start to the group campaign. The signs are promising that the 32-year-old is poised to return to his devastating best this year after regaining full fitness and opting to
step down from the responsibility of captaincy.
Wright openly admits he is at his best when he plays with freedom and now he has handed over the reins Sussex fans will be looking forward to seeing him really cut loose and underline his status as one of the best in the world in the most explosive format of the game. Luke has been a big hit in Australia’s Big Bash for Melbourne Stars, whom he has represented since 2011

Me and Mushy: Chris Adams and Mushtaq Ahmed enjoy the celebrations after the first of three Championship wins in 2003
THE GOLDEN AGE SEVEN TROPHIES IN SIX YEARS MADE SUSSEX THE BEST CRICKET TEAM IN THE COUNTRY – WITH THE EMPHASIS ON TEAM BY BRUCE TALBOT
We love to talk about the golden age of Sussex cricket, those memorable years between 2003-09 when Sussex won seven trophies and were the best team in the country. Yes, team. When Sussex fans chew over their memories with supporters of other counties they are inevitably met with a variation of the following sentence: “Well, it was only because
40
NATWEST T20 BLAST SUMMER PROGRAMME 2017
you had Mushy / Murray Goodwin / Chris Adams that you won all those trophies,” (delete name as applicable). Adams, who raised the silverware to the Sussex fans on each of those seven occasions, gets it himself even now, 14 years after Sussex won the first of their trophies when they clinched the County Championship in 2003 for the first time in their history. “Look, there’s no doubt guys like Mushy and Muzza played a massive
part in the success we had. Any team who has the sort of sustained success we had will always rely on a few key individuals more than perhaps the others. It’s the same in any team game, whatever the era and whatever the sport. We all recognise that. “But we were a team first and foremost. A really tight-knit group made up of individuals from all corners of the world who somehow gelled into this fantastic unit. We had a wonderful spirit. There were
times when we had rows and disagreements but when the going was tough and, believe me, there were lots of times during that period when it was very, very hard for us we came through.” The stats back Adams up. Between that 2003 success and their third Championship in 2007 Sussex only used 29 players in five seasons. A core of eight - Adams, Mushtaq, Goodwin, James Kirtley, Jason Lewry, Richard Montgomerie, Robin Martin-Jenkins and Mike Yardy –

were integral to all three titles. While Adams still regards winning the Championship in 2003 as the best moment of his career – and remember he played Test cricket for England – the 2007 success was the one which gave him the most satisfaction. When Sussex beat Worcestershire in their final game to clinch the title they were down to their last 13 fit players. By then Mushtaq, in particular, was struggling physically. He had taken more than 400 Championship
wickets after arriving at Hove in 2003 and also been an integral part of the team which won Sussex’s first one-day final at Lord’s for 20 years in 2006, but his knee was worn out and within a couple of years he had retired. In 2007, for the first time during the golden era, Sussex lost players to England with Yardy, Kirtley and Matt Prior all representing their country and missing games. “In 2007 that’s when the team spirit and work ethic we had really shone through. I remember coming
back from our penultimate game at Durham when we lost and the coach was like a scene from Casualty,” says Adams. “Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushy were both hobbling and Rana Naved had dislocated his shoulder and was howling in pain every time the coach drove over a bump on the A1. But we got through. Like I said, when the chips were down we usually found a way.” What made Sussex head and shoulders above their rivals at the time – many of whom were infinitely
better resourced financially – was that they were successful in all three formats. By 2006 Adams and coach Mark Robinson, who had taken over from Peter Moores, had targeted one-day success to go with their Championship wins. The core of the team remained the same but players like Carl Hopkinson, Luke Wright and Yasir Arafat emerged to add their skills to the mix. That September Sussex won their second Championship but for many of their

supporters the highlight of that summer wasn’t the lap of honour at Trent Bridge, where victory over Nottinghamshire clinched the title, but their narrow success over Lancashire in the final of the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy at Lord’s a few weeks earlier. Kirtley’s memorable five-wicket burst, Sussex squeezed home. The National League title followed in 2008 and the success continued the following year when the Sharks retained the trophy and won the T20 crown for the first time, but by then it was Yardy rather than Adams who was going up to collect the silverware. Adams stepped down at the end of the 2008 season, announcing his decision moments after Goodwin’s
heroic batting steered Sussex to a last-ball victory at Trent Bridge in the final game of the National League campaign. “Letting go of something that had defined my career and become my life and not just mine but my family as well was a more painful experience than I’d imagined it would be,” he later admitted. It truly was the end of an era. Those players are still in touch. A reunion was held in 2013 to mark the tenth anniversary of that first
Championship and Adams hopes it won’t be the last time that special group of players get together to reminisce about old times. One thing is certain. For Sussex supporters, that golden age is something they will never tire of talking about.

ESSEX EAGLES FRI 18TH AUGUST 64
BLAST CHANCES As ever, they will be aiming high but although Essex are always serious T20 contenders they have never won the competition and have been three-times losing semi-finalists in 2006, 2008 and 2010. In Ravi Bopara, veteran captain Ryan ten Doeschate, Tom Westley and Adam Wheater they have a core group of experienced and proven short-form performers.
PLAYER TO WATCH Ashar Zaidi – the left-arm spinning all-rounder may not be one of the stellar names in an exciting Eagles line-up, but the stocky Pakistan-born 36-year-old gives the ball a fearful whack with the bat and also bowls highly effectively in this format. His 363 lower middle-order runs last year came at an average of 40.33.
HIRED GUNS Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan left-arm fast bowler and useful tailend batsman comes in for Neil Wagner as overseas player for the second half of the season.
